Rector’s Letter
Dear Parishioner,
CHURCH FAMILY
It was a great delight to join family members on a recent visit to the Opera House to see “Oliver”. There wasn’t a spare seat to be had as the audience had come to support the young cast of 230 children. Rehearsals had commenced just two weeks previously, and the result was a most professional show which everyone really enjoyed. Joy Montgomery’s grandson Andrew played the role of Oliver and he, along with all the entire cast, were outstanding. They were all so confident and full of enthusiasm. While each one had a specific part to play, they worked effectively together as one family on the stage. I am sure you may be familiar with many of the songs from Oliver. This one is particularly significant as we now begin our autumn programmes of services and activities: “Consider yourself at home. Consider yourself one of the family. I’ve taken to you so strong, It’s clear we’re going to get along. Consider yourself one of us!” I hope that you consider yourself to be at home here in St Columba’s and that you feel part of our family. However, for families to be effective, they need every member to get actively involved, just like these 230 children did in the cast of Oliver. The result was amazing! What a wonderful example of focused hard work, determination and hope that they have given us here in St Columba’s, which comes just at the right time as we approach this new season with fresh vision. May the example set by that powerful performance of Oliver provide us with an opportunity this month to review our current attendance at services and Parish Organisations, and to explore new ways of how we can further support our church family in St Columba’s. Fresh initiatives of help are greatly appreciated and new members are always welcome. I encourage you to carry out your own personal ‘review’ and to respond in a positive manner with enthusiasm, just like the children did in the cast of Oliver. May God bless our work together throughout this new season. Yours in His Service,

Prayers for your comfort
ver to find you in a e. When we are in rplexity, shed your are burdened with lift us to the calm are battling with weak, by the might g to overcome. We m in whom we are Son Jesus Christ.
So often in my parish visiting I hear of the great support which parishioners receive from the “Prayers for your Comfort” card, which we had printed some years ago. Despite its small size, which was designed to fit easily into a jacket pocket or a handbag, it contains some helpful prayers for different circumstances. Many parishioners use this card as an integral part of their daily devotions, whether that be at home or in hospital. This edition of The Columban contains a revised copy of “Prayers for your Comfort”, to provide you with further support at the beginning of this new season in the life of our parish. In addition to containing a number of helpful prayers for your daily devotions and situations of need, it also includes a selection of Bible Verses, some of which may be familiar.
good wishes from

PARISH PRAYER
God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711 3

Harvest Sunday - 1st October We are delighted to welcome the Venerable Dr Stephen McBride, Archdeacon of Connor, to our All Age Worship service on Sunday 1st October. “I was born in 1961, was brought up in Belfast by my father and mother Don and Claire McBride, with David and Naomi, my brother and sister. From there I read architecture at the Queen’s University of Belfast 1980-84 and theology at Trinity College Dublin 1984-87. I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1995 for research into 19th century church architecture. “After Theological College (1984-87) I was made deacon in 1987 and served as curate assistant in Antrim Parish. From 1990 – 1995 I was rector of St Peter’s Parish on the Antrim Road in Belfast. I returned to Antrim as vicar in 1995 and was appointed Archdeacon of Connor in 2002. I am married to Helen (Corporate Improvement Manager in Newtownabbey Borough Council) and we have two children, Rachael and Alex.” This service will start at 11.00am and will be followed by Harvest Lunch in the church hall. DEDICATION OF PARISH ORGANISATION LEADERS SUNDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER
On Sunday 3rd September, we will be holding the Service of Dedication for our Parish Organisation Leaders during the 10.30am All Age Worship service. We would be grateful if you could bring along as many members of your organisation as possible to join in, as together we prepare for the new season of activities. Our organisations are so lucky to have such enthusiastic leadership and we would like to celebrate the hard work and commitment shown by each group. Packs will be distributed to the leaders which will contain some important information, so please make sure you collect this at the service! Thank you to all of our organisational leaders, members and to those who give so much of their talents to provide friendship, fellowship and entertainment, as well as valuable support for St Columba’s. Happy new season!
Front cover The cover of this month’s Columban is a drawing by parishioner Bill Morrison of the front porch of St Columba’s Parish Church. It was drawn 55 years ago and given the title ‘The Open Door’. Bill, then an architectural apprentice, submitted the drawing to the Royal Institute of British Architects as a testimony of study. 9

Craft & Hobby Circle Last year we were busy preparing and planning for the Christmas Tree Festival. You should all be proud to have created your own tree as well as making all the decorations. I would like to thank everybody who contributed to the Craft Stall - Jam, Home Baking, Cards and Christmas decorations, crocheted crosses and knitted toys, Church Choir Mice, even those who made the tea and coffee in the weeks leading up to it. The amount raised by everybody was phenomenal. After relaxing on Monday mornings during July and August we can return refreshed on the 1st and 3rd Mondays from September. Everybody welcome, so please bring a friend. Carol 9079 9997 / 07831 345560 or Email: pchwillis@hotmail.co.uk
Confirmation On Sunday, 25 June the Bishop of Down and Dromore, The Right Reverend Harold Miller administered the Rite of Confirmation in St Mark’s Newtownards when 20 candidates were confirmed. It was a great delight for me to present Bill Craven, John Kerr and Daniel Sadlier to Bishop Harold on that most significant occasion. They received Holy Communion for the first time in St Columba’s the following Sunday. th

Railway and Model Club Well I’m enjoying the sun, not too often seen recently, while I think of the coming ‘railway’ year. Once more we are going to be very busy. Our new layout is now settled into place, beside our little ‘n’ gauge layout. Ian is working hard on the ‘n’ gauge scenery, and the fields and farmland are all being created.....I suppose I could say he is ploughing ahead!!! Some member(s) will work on the new layout, setting out the various buildings and testing a few railway engines etc. etc. The original layout moves ahead, with the aqueduct and tunnels well under way. The road through the village has new hedging planted, and some engines are in for maintenance. As you may have guessed, although we are officially closed for the summer break there have been members at work on the layouts , every Wednesday night. We ‘open’ again on the first Wednesday in September, and welcome any visitors, or potential new members. During the summer, some unknown kind person left a box of model railway rolling stock and scenery at the door to the railway room. We would like to give our thanks to our benefactor. Perhaps you would identify yourself!!?? But in the meantime, keep ‘er rollin’! David.

NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER I welcome Rachel Albery to our Sunday School at the beginning of this new academic year. Rachel will be teaching the Junior Class with Louise Craig on a shared basis. Rachel is an experienced nursery teacher in Braniel Primary School. I am very pleased that she will be succeeding Patricia Wilson, who recently retired following many years of dedicated teaching. Rachel is married to David, and they have two children, Michael and Rebecca, who are very well known in St Columba’s. I wish Rachel God’s richest blessing as she joins the Sunday School teaching team. The Rector. 18
Thought for the Month
When I first started to work in the Parish Office, it took a while to get to know parishioners. I tried hard to keep my passion for rugby under wraps for fear of offending people. However, when I saw the Rector climbing the steps to his seat at Kingspan with his family, the cat was out of the bag! The Rectory Family sat a few rows in front of me at each match, and I quickly discovered that many more parishioners were ‘rugby-mad’ too. In fact, it is quite a rugby family here in St Columba’s. One of the first parishioners to welcome me was Murray Hunter, and I was impressed to learn that his son-in-law Dougie played for Glasgow. It sparked many fun debates with Murray, as he supported both sides at the Ulster/Glasgow matches. I was even more delighted to meet Dougie, who made a special visit to the parish office with his Pro-12 medal when Glasgow won the cup, beating Ulster in the semi-finals and then Munster in the finals, both at Kingspan in 2015. I was speechless, which, as many of you who know me well, know is very rare!
There are so many parishioners who now ask, “Are you going to the match?”, (usually answered with a “YES!”), or “What did you think of the match?”, and a conversation starts. I had no idea just how many parishioners shared my passion for Ulster Rugby. I have met many of the players, taken “selfies” and had some hilarious conversations with them. As a season-ticket holder, I am spotted at many matches, and have been on the ‘big screen’ at Kingspan on numerous occasions. However, with the clergy in attendance at many of the matches, it can be difficult to hide! I have even been caught singing “Stand Up For The Ulster Men”, something I have denied when asked about choir membership! The thing which never ceases to amaze me is that everyone I speak to is so passionate about Ulster Rugby. Whether they are at the matches, or watching from home, many parishioners have a lot of interest in how Ulster are performing. The ”16th man”, as Ulster refer to their supporters, makes a huge impact on how well the team play. The noisier the stadium is, the more focused the team are. This is true for many things in life – if you are passionate about something, you give it your all. How powerful it could be to harness this passion to encourage more people to come to church and share in the wonderful life together God has given us. We can draw so much strength from our faith in God to face any obstacle in our lives. Like rugby, support from fellow parishioners can push us onwards to achieve more than we thought 19
Thought for the Month cont.
possible. It gives us hope in the bleakest of times.
Sport can cross many divisions in our country, bringing people together in ways that nothing else can. It is reassuring to know that whatever issues divide Northern Ireland, there actually are ways to overcome these. Standing with supporters from opposing teams, opposing faiths or opposing opinions, my enjoyment of rugby has allowed me to meet lots of new people who would never otherwise have crossed my path. Friendships have been made and built upon, and this blessing in life is something to hold on to. SUFTUM!!! Karen Patterson My sincere thanks to Karen for sharing this ‘Thought’ with us. The October ‘Thought for the Month’ will be written by Gerald Hill.
CRÈCHE Crèche begins on Sunday morning, 10th September. It runs in the church hall, at the same time as Sunday School ie. 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays each month. Last year the numbers in crèche were low and I would be grateful if you would encourage any families you may know with babies and toddlers to consider bringing them to crèche. I would love to see numbers build up again. I am also asking for volunteers to help out as I have very few to call upon. Everyone assisting with crèche will have had the necessary Safeguarding Children checks completed. This is a very informal time for young children to play together as well as listen to stories and perhaps sing the odd song!! Parents are more than welcome to stay too – there may even be tea and coffee available! If you would like to find out more about crèche, please make yourself known to me some Sunday morning. I look forward to meeting you! Lynn Ryan
MUMS AND TOTS Mums and Tots will be opening their doors on Friday, 8th September from 10.00am to 11.45am. We will be delighted to welcome any new parent/grandparent/ childminder with one or more children under nursery age. It is a great place to make new friends so do come and join us. Anne 20
YOUTH ETC. Youth Etc. is our Parish youth group at St Columba’s and is open to all secondary school young people. New members are very welcome along with any friends that they would like to bring. Activities are normally planned for once a month and have included; ten pin bowling, crazy golf, trampolining at Vertigo, Aunt Sandra’s workshops (chocolate and sweet creations), raft building, laser quest, go-karting and snow tubing. Youth Etc. will be recommencing on Saturday, 2nd September at 2.00pm with an excursion to Mt. Ober Golf Club (Fourwinds) for a game of FOOTGOLF over 9 holes. FootGolf is played on a golf course using a football. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole in the fewest number of shots possible using only your feet. Some members of the Ulster Rugby team enjoyed a team building session earlier this year. If you are interested in attending the excursion and having some fun and a few laughs, please get in touch using the contact details below. If any new young people would like to join, could you let me know by emailing David Kelly at: davykly@gmail.com or texting on 07730 468684 David

We resume on Monday, 4th September in the main hall commencing at 7.30pm. A warm welcome awaits any person who drops in to meet up with us. As mentioned in the last article we are looking for new members to join us. We are not looking for bowlers (although it is a bonus). Our new season starts with an opening service on Tuesday, 5th September at 8.00pm in the church. It would be lovely to see as many members as possible on that night. Light refreshments will be served afterwards giving us a great opportunity to catch up. On 3rd October we will have a visit from the owner of Nature’s Way at Ballyhackamore. This is one of Belfast’s oldest health food shops, stocking a wide range of specialist foods and herbal/ homeopathic supplements. This should be a most informative and interesting meeting. We will also have an Enterprise stall at this evening. I know many our members will wish to purchase diaries, cards, calendars etc. Looking forward to our new season Joyce
AFTERNOON GROUP The next meeting of the Afternoon Group will be on Monday 11th September at 2.30pm in the choir vestry. We hope to welcome Louise from Bryson House as our speaker. Her talk will be followed by afternoon tea and a bit of craic! We would be delighted if any ladies in the congregation would like to come along. Joy 22
ACTIVITY GROUP Before we broke up for the summer, our group had a lovely weekend break in Newcastle Co. Down. We stayed at the Tullyrose Bed and Breakfast and had a most enjoyable time. We all agreed that our visit to the Villa Vinci Restaurant was the highlight of our stay. During May and June we enjoyed our Tuesday walks to all our favourite places and always ended up with that welcome cuppa. We return for Badminton and Scrabble on Tuesday 12 September 2017 at 7.30pm in the Church Hall and I look forward to your company as we celebrate 30 years of our group. New faces will be made very welcome. Maureen
PAUSE Autumn has arrived - or is about to do so. I hope that every reader of the Columban has had time to relax and enjoy the summer months. PAUSE, as usual, continued for those of us who were at home on any or all of the dates in July and August. Our next PAUSE will take place on: Wednesday, 20th September at 10.30am in Neill’s Hill for tea/coffee. If you are free on that date we would be delighted to see you (and a friend) there. All will be made welcome! If you require transport please contact me (9020 3684). Eileen 23
Ladies Guild It’s a beautiful sunny afternoon as I write to tell you about the beginning of the 2017/2018 season which begins on:Wednesday, 20th September -- USUAL VENUE -- the Choir Vestry --USUAL TIME --7.45pm. Our first speaker Liam Logan is one of Northern Ireland’s leading Ulster Scots enthusiasts. Liam believes Ulster Scots is the link between Irish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, Scots and English and he feels that these links should be strengthened and further developed. I imagine many parishioners will be interested in learning more about this, so please come along, our meetings are open to all. Extra programmes will be available at the back of church so please take one for friends and family. Sadly we will be two members short as we begin our New Year as Evelyn King and Violet McMeekin both died during the holidays. They were long standing members and supporters of our Guild and will be greatly missed. If you received lots of postcards this summer, please save the stamps for us to donate to the Leprosy Society. We are always delighted to welcome new members and will be serving tea, coffee, nibbles and information after the 10.30am service on Sunday, 17th September. If you are in need of transport to a meeting please get in touch with me or any Committee member. Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday, 20th September at 7.45pm. Imelda
ALL AGE WORSHIP This month’s collection is in support of Macmillan, a charity known by many of us that offers vital support to those affected by cancer. Today there are 2.5 million people in the UK living with cancer and by 2040 there will be 5.3 million. While thankfully more people are living longer following a cancer diagnosis, health and social care providers are already struggling to meet the needs of people with cancer because of financial and capacity pressures. It’s due to this worrying situation that the continuing dedication of charities like Macmillan is so important. Your support today is greatly appreciated. Suzanne 24
