Rector’s Letter

Dear Parishioner,

THE REGISTER OF VESTRY MEMBERS During this month, the Register of Vestry Members is open for review and is also available for inspection from the Churchwardens. The Register is separate from the Parish Database and those whose names appear on it are eligible, subject to their consent at the Annual Easter Vestry Meeting, for nomination and election to the Select Vestry. In addition, those parishioners are entitled to vote at the elections during the Annual Easter Vestry Meeting. If your name is not already on the Register of Vestry Members and you wish to have it added, you are required to: •

Be over 18 years of age

Be a contributor to church funds in a recognised form (Free Will Offering Envelopes or Standing Order). Please contact the Parish Administrator, Karen Patterson (02890 656891) if you wish to support the work of St Columba’s in this way.

Sign a Form of Declaration, which can be obtained from the Churchwardens, Andrew Hirst or Andrew Ellis. These forms need to be returned to them by 12noon on Tuesday 28th February 2017.

The Annual Review of the Register of Vestry Members will take place at a meeting of the Select Vestry at 7.30pm on Tuesday 28th February in the Rectory. St Columba’s, along with other parishes, is now registered as an individual charity with the Charity Commission (N.I.). As a recent communication from the Diocesan Office stated:

2

“Each member of the Select Vestry is considered as a Trustee of their parish – that is nothing new in terms of their responsibilities, it is just that these have been formalised under charity legislation”. The Supplementary Guidance on Charity Trustees provides this additional information for your assistance: Anyone who is elected as a member of a Select Vestry must not be disqualified from being a trustee of a charity. Those disqualified under the Charities Act from acting as a trustee are anyone who: • Has been convicted of an offence involving deception or dishonesty, unless the conviction is spent conviction under to Rehabilitation of Offenders (NI) Order 1978. • Is an undischarged bankrupt or has made a voluntary arrangement with creditors • Has previously been removed as a trustee by the Commission or by the Court • Is subject to disqualification under company legislation. It is the responsibility of anyone who might fall into any of these categories, not to make themselves available for election to the Select Vestry. Please give this important matter careful, prayerful consideration during these weeks. I encourage you to actively serve your parish as a Registered Vestry Member if you satisfy the above criteria and guidelines. Yours in His service,

PARISH PRAYER

God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711 3

CHURCH FLOWERS I should like to record my sincere thanks to those ladies and gentlemen who so willingly gave of their time to help me in with the decoration of the church for the Christmas Services and the subsequent clear-up on 5th January. It was indeed a case of ‘many hands make light work’ and the task was completed in record time on both occasions. Parishioners are reminded about the ‘Flower Rota’ which can be found on the noticeboard adjacent to the Baptistry. There are still quite a few dates to fill for this year and if you wish to remember a special date, event or loved one by placing flowers at the Main Table please add your name against the date of your choice. Flowers may be placed on the small ‘Memorial table’ near the side chapel at any time. Just give me a ring to arrange a date. I am usually at the Church each Saturday morning between 10.30 and 11.30 and will gladly give any assistance required. Thank you Eleanor

CRAFT & HOBBY CIRCLE We start this year with a clean slate and at the moment have no specific project. What would you like to do, any ideas? I do know the hospitals are looking for hats for new-borns, not just premmies, so maybe we could knit or crochet some of these. If you are unable to make these yourself maybe encourage friends to make them for us to distribute. Easter chicks or other novelty egg covers are also popular. I have easy to knit patterns for hats, teddies, chicks, etc, if anybody would like one please be in touch. We are fortunate in having such a warm and friendly group and I would encourage others to join us, not just to craft but, more importantly, to enjoy the company, chat and a ‘cuppa’ for an hour or so. See you again on 6th February. Carol

Thought for the Month

For over a month now I have been attempting to put pen to paper and write “My thought for the month” however my many attempts have all ended crumpled up in the waste paper bin... the ideas I had never seemed so good on paper. “What Luck” I had this morning when talking to a friend and we discussed the road of life and the many choices along that road that we come to and depending on the direction we take our life’s path is formed and there is no turning back. That made me think of “What Luck” I have had. Born to loving parents in the early years of WW2 they gave me everything they could, a happy comfortable home, a good education, great support and a wide circle of family and friends. “What Luck” I had on leaving school at sixteen and going to sea as a Midshipman in the Merchant Navy. “What Luck” I then had when my father decided that the future at sea was somewhat uncertain and he cancelled my Indentures and I came home and studied for my Bank Exams. I was then lucky to get a job with the Belfast Banking Co Ltd starting in Portrush where I was for two great years. Then on returning closer to Belfast I was able to join the Royal Naval Reserve and serve for over ten years enjoying many exciting times attached to various Naval ships and shore establishments. “What Luck” I had in all the branches of the Bank I was posted to in Northern Ireland and all the friends and colleagues I met until I finally retired in 1998. “What Luck” and great good fortune I had when I married Anne, the love of my life, having two beautiful daughters and the very many happy times we all had together. They in turn have successful careers and great husbands and I now have five marvellous grandchildren. I am so proud of them all and feel I am so lucky that we are all so close and enjoy so very many happy times together. “What Luck” to have met so many lovely people and being able to get involved in so many sports and organisations over the years and still to have a great interest in rugby and sailing. I always enjoy my regular visits to Coleraine and Dungannon RFC’s and the Perennials RFC, RUYC and Rotary keep me in touch with friends, sailors and players of my own vintage. I was lucky enough to own a yacht for many years and still enjoy sailing albeit it now in warmer waters chartering a large yacht with five or six of my pals for a couple of weeks every year. Also “What Luck” and good fortune to have had and enjoyed so many great holidays all over the years. Naturally we all have set-backs in life but I feel we must continue to concentrate on the positives. So is it really “good luck” or some other benevolent power overseeing these decisions or indeed are they the same thing? I know what I believe so let us all start 2017 by counting our blessings and thanking God for his guidance. Jack Dunlop Our sincere thanks to Jack Dunlop for sharing his ‘Thought’ with us. The March ‘Thought for the Month’ will be written by Jenny Smyth.

PAUSE Winter has arrived! The temperature has dropped, the strength of the wind has risen dramatically and snow is imminent. It is only 11th January. Regardless of these minor drawbacks PAUSE continues as usual for those of us who have free time and enjoy our coffee with some company. If you would like to come along you will be very welcome. There is no membership, no programme and no commitment. Some folk call in for a quick chat between other arrangements while others linger and enjoy the morning. I linger. This month we plan to meet on: Friday, 3rd February, 10.30am in Binkies for tea/coffee and Tuesday, 21st February, 10.30am in The Park Avenue Hotel for tea/coffee I look forward to meeting with you at one or both of these venues. Come on your own or bring a friend or two. If you need further details or help with transport please contact me. I hope that we all enjoy a healthy and happy 2017. Eileen 9020 3684

Art Club Art Club members were very sad to hear that Leslie Noble had died on 28th December 2016. He had been a member of the Club for many years and was a prolific and talented painter producing beautiful landscapes. Unfortunately latterly his illness prevented him from attending. We miss him, his kindness, cheerfulness and advice. Our sympathies go to his wife Diana and all the family. Our Easter term has started and will continue until 6th April 2017. We hope to attend some of the ‘Exhibition on Screen’ films, about famous artists, to be held in the Dundonald Omniplex. Vida

Men’s Club HAPPY NEW YEAR Out with old and in with the new. We had a very successful start to the first half our season. Prior to the festive break we had our first match and we were also involved in the very successful Christmas Tree Festival. We enjoyed our usual Christmas fun competition on the 19th Dec. Many thanks to our Captain, Stewart Beckwith, for organising the games and also a big thank you to Alan Rogers for the enjoyable supper. Congratulations go to our prize winners on the night, Jim Stevenson, Paddy Malone and Dr Billy Nelson. We are now focusing on honing our skills for the visit of Knock Methodist bowlers on the 23rd January. The next fixture will then be our visit to St Colmcilles on the 16th February. We will be holding our social night on the 13th February when we invite friends and family along to the hall to join us. This is also an open invite to any parishioner who might like to come along. Just contact me on 07956061929 if interested. Until next time, John 12

Happy New Year From the Brownies ! We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. The Brownies have been out and about and visited Aunt Sandra’s Candy shop where they learned how sweets are made and we also learned a bit of local history as well. Of course they were given some goody bags of sweeties to take home for their mums and dads lol. The girls were inspired by their visit to the sweet shop and used different sweets to bake a Christmas snowman treat, they turned out really well and were surprisingly easy to do. While the Brownies have been busy baking I have been busy cooking up my own little treat and I am very pleased to announce a new Brownie of the future was born on Thursday 8th December, quite a few days late and weighing 8lb 11 oz, meet Abbie! Lots of fun to look forward to with our visit to the Pantomime in the Opera House and getting our new Brownies prepared for their Enrolment. Looking forward to getting back to the fun. Amanda

Railway and Model Club Happy New Year to one and all. We started the 2017 programme with the completion of the picturesque Columba Park. Our photograph shows the park, which lies close to Columba Railway Station, and the hill farm. Park benches are provided for any of our 00 scale residents who wish to stroll around the park and the lake. Our bird population includes swans, ducks and even some geese. The park is the creation of John Robb, who now also acts as resident Park Ranger. The park is open, most Wednesdays, from 7:00 til 9:30p.m. Our village is also expanding and a number of hedgerows have appeared around the Rector’s Retreat, the Garage (Beckwith’s Fill-up) and the local shop (Wallet Watchers). The Kensington Viaduct nears completion with a couple of longboats already in use. Do you really want to keep going without seeing village life at it’s best? Why not come down some Wednesday and see us at work......you might want to join in the fun and control your own train running around the layout!! On 15th February we are to have Robin Haldane speak to us about the Railway Preservation group at Downpatrick. Robin, one of our basses in the Church Choir, is responsible for the permanent way on the railway and we are delighted that he will talk to us about the preservation work on that line. What’s ‘permanent way’? Why not pop down and find out! That is all for this month, so ...keep ‘er rollin’, till next time. David

Thanks to everyone who helped in anyway with the children’s Christmas party - a wonderful time was had by all who attended. Well done to all the Sunday school children who did readings and prayers over the Christmas period. We had a large group singing ‘Away in a Manger’ on Christmas morning. We would welcome the children of any new families to the church to join us in Sunday school. Joyce Stevenson

INSTALLATION IN DOWN CATHEDRAL A large congregation gathered in a beautifully refurbished Down Cathedral on the evening of Friday, 2nd December, to witness and celebrate the installation of the Reverend John Auchmuty, Rector of St. Columba’s Parish Church, Knock, as Prebendary of Talpestone, Canon of Down Cathedral. The ancient stalls were filled to capacity not only with parishioners from St. Columba’s, but also with those from the Reverend Auchmuty’s former parishes of St. Mark’s, Dundela, where he first served as Curate, then as Rector of Killylea, diocese of Armagh, and Killaney and Carryduff, diocese of Down and Dromore. The service was conducted by the Dean of Down Cathedral, the Very Reverend Henry Hull, ably assisted by the Reverend Canons Ken Smyth and Walter Laverty in the presence of the Bishop of Down and Dromore, the Right Reverend Harold Miller. Many of the Rector’s clergy colleagues, including brother-in-law, the Reverend Canon Peter McDowell, Rector of Ballywillan, also friends and family members, as well as wife Caroline, sons Charles and Henry, father Denzil and the Rector’s sisters, Claire and Dawn, and her son, Luke, were present, travelling from as far afield as Galway, Portrush, Armagh, Dublin and Cork, as well as locally from Belfast and surrounds. Under the direction of Dr Joe McKee and accompanied by Michael McCracken on organ, the combined choirs of Down Cathedral and St. Columba’s provided a magnificent musical backdrop from on high as the congregation participated enthusiastically in a series of uplifting hymns that would indeed have raised the rafters of the venerable old structure, had there been any. Former Primate of Armagh, the Right Reverend Lord Eames, preached an inspirational sermon, and described John, 16

Caroline, Charles and Henry as the model Rectory family who worked tirelessly for the parish. The service of installation was conducted in an atmosphere of simplicity and informal dignity, followed by a celebration of Holy Communion. Yet members of the congregation were only too aware of the tragic and sudden passing of the Rector’s mother, Brenda, exactly three weeks earlier, poignantly referred to by the Dean, the Right Reverend Lord Eames and Bishop Harold, as well as the Rector himself in his gracious address of thanks at the close of the evening. As the formal proceedings drew to a conclusion, Bishop Harold led the congregation in a spontaneous and prolonged round of applause on behalf of the new Prebendary of Talpestone, which, as the Bishop commented, spoke volumes for the affection and high esteem in which he was held by all present. Canon Auchmuty greeted and thanked each member of the congregation personally as they moved from the main body of the Cathedral into the Narthex to enjoy a sumptuous spread of homemade fare and refreshments. Much banter and convivial fellowship abounded as old acquaintances were renewed and new ones struck up, until it was time for the ancient wooden doors to swing shut as the congregation departed for home, by coach as well as by car, after a truly memorable occasion of great joy, celebration and ceremony that will resonate long with all who were privileged to attend. Mothers’ Union December and January were busy months for St Columba’s Mothers’ Union members. We held our Christmas dinner at The Secret Garden on 8th December, when we enjoyed a lovely meal in beautiful surroundings. We also launched our 2017 programme following the Mothers’ Union theme for the year of “Faith in Action”. Our meeting on 3rd January was a Beetle Drive followed by supper. Members who attended will confirm that this was a fun evening, a notable feature being the flexible interpretation of what constituted a complete beetle-six legs or four? Our next meeting is on 7th February and our speaker is Maureen Magennis, who will be sharing her experiences as a tour guide for foreign visitors and tourists, including passengers on the many cruise ships which visit Belfast. This promises to be a very entertaining meeting, and all members and parishioners are welcome to attend. Membership subscriptions for 2017 are now due. We have held the annual subscription at £20, out of which we have to pay £18 per member to Mothers’ Union central funds. Please bring any outstanding subscriptions to our February meeting. Finally, our March meeting is our Projects and Overseas meeting. We will be packing hospital soap bags and ask members to supply the following for each bag: small toothpaste, toothbrush, small soap, facecloth, comb, small packet of paper hankies and pen. Small travel bottles of shampoo and shower gel can also be included. Hotel size toiletries are very suitable. For those who enjoy knitting, sewing and crafts we can provide patterns for teddies, chicks, Easter egg baskets, Cross in my Pocket, hat & scarf, fiddle blanket, etc. These items will be used for Diocesan projects which include support for Women’s Aid and female prisoners at Hydebank. If you wish to help please contact any committee member. Katrina/Jill

Activity Group With all the excitement of Christmas behind us it will be good to be back in the hall for some exercise after all the lovely food that has been consumed over the holiday period. Talking about food all the group enjoyed a delicious meal and evening at Neil’s Hill, Ballyhackamore for our Annual Christmas Dinner on 13th December, 2016. See you each Tuesday, 7.30pm in the hall. Maureen

Afternoon Group The December meeting was a Christmas lunch in the choir vestry. Homemade soup was accompanied by wheaten bread and rolls generously supplied by the Golden Crumb. Turkey and ham with assorted salads were then followed by pavlova. Mince pies and Christmas cake with tea or coffee followed. Laurence from Engage with Age provided an entertaining Christmas quiz and left Keep Warm packs for everyone at the lunch. The afternoon finished with Brian Clements accompanying us on the piano as we raised the roof with some Christmas songs and carols. My thanks to everyone who contributed to making the afternoon such a success. We raised ÂŁ105 toward the Church Refurbishment Fund. At the January meeting we welcomed John Cochrane as our speaker. He told us about his life in the Rag Trade and entertained us with stories of a bygone age. John joined us for afternoon tea and the ladies reminisced about visits to his shop. The next meeting will be on Monday, 13th February at 2.30pm in the choir vestry. All ladies will be made most welcome, so please come and join us. Joy

Ladies Guild 2017, where does the time go, it seems no time at all since we celebrated the Millennium. A quick look back now to November 2016 when we enjoyed a visit from Barbara Long who transformed the Choir Vestry into a very upmarket boutique!! Barbara, who was born in Canada, spent twelve years in Africa with her missionary parents. She later became a nurse and returned to Africa where she overcame many obstacles. While back in Canada on sick leave she met her husband to be, another missionary, and she travelled with him until he came home to Northern Ireland to retire. Barbara started making jewellery and uses her profits to send medicines to her old hospital in Loloma to supplement their meagre supplies. After hearing Barbara’s story we enjoyed shopping for Christmas presents. In December we had our Christmas Dinner at Shandon Golf Club, once again enjoyed by all. We are grateful to the Rector and Caroline for joining us and sharing in all the fun and fellowship. We are always delighted to welcome new faces so perhaps you have a friend who might enjoy coming to our film evening on Wednesday 15th February. Oh and don’t forget to bring in those Christmas stamps you have saved for the Leprosy Society. Imelda
