URBAN ARTS FESTI V AL THE ULTIMATE SHOWCASE OF YOUNG TALENT
+
T
oday is Columbia’s shining moment as we place a spotlight on the glorious work of our graduating students—at both the graduate and undergraduate levels—all wrapped in an urban arts festival that captures our creative spirit and celebrates our community. Manifest has emerged as Columbia’s signature event, one of the most impressive festivals on any college campus and a major cultural presence in Chicago. With the addition of our Big Walls event, Manifest truly has emerged as an important Chicago cultural asset. Our students have created a magical day for you. Every Columbia building and the adjoining parking lots and sidewalks in and near the South Loop will be filled with energy, passion and the creative output of our students. We begin the day with our Great Convergence as we come together to celebrate our creative community and offer our support and encouragement to our 2016 graduates as they go forward to animate creative practice in Chicago and nationwide. As we are dazzled by the spectacle created by our students, the Great Convergence reminds us of the singular and incredible power of our community. To our graduates: Congratulations! To our faculty: Your inspiration is palpable in your students’ stunning bodies of work. To our staff: You have crafted a creative environment for your students. To our alumni: Welcome home. To our parents: Be proud. To our guests: Be amazed.
Welcome to Manifest 2016. 2

The Great Convergence is Manifest’s opening ceremony in which faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, donors and parents come together as a singular Columbia community before the Urban Arts Festival erupts into the South Loop. Created by our students and guided by our faculty and staff, the Great Convergence is a grand spectacle using metaphor, pageantry, ritual and theatricality to capture our spirit and ethos. C
olumbia will come together on May 13 for the final celebration of the academic year, uniting every department to celebrate the 16th annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival. More than 2,000 student artists and performers will “animate” the Wabash Arts Corridor by performing on 11 stages, showcasing work in 13 galleries and finishing the installation of 17 full-length murals. Mark Kelly, vice president for Student Success, said Manifest has grown as a major citywide festival attracting more than 30,000 people annually from Chicago’s arts and culture community. “We invite the public because anyone that cares about art in the city should care about Manifest,” Kelly said. Manifest will kick off with the fourth annual “Great Convergence,” as approximately 2,400 graduates march south down Wabash Avenue. The procession will include large puppets, a marching band, the student color guard and the dance squad.
» Photos ALEXIS ELLERS (‘08)
Following the procession, Kelly will lead graduate students in his annual “Hell yeah, we did it” speech on top of a bus with a megaphone. “It’s the bookend to when new students start at convocation, and each individual was saying ‘Hell yeah.’ Now it’s ‘Hell yeah, we did it,’” Kelly said. “It is a collective journey.” The day will continue with academic department showcases, musical performances, tours of the arts corridor, unveilings of group exhibitions and screenings of student films. The culmination of Big Walls, a two-week project from May 1–13 that will bring 17 international, local, alumni and current student artists’ work to the WAC, will take place at the Papermaker’s Garden, located at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and 8th Street. Shannon Bourne, assistant director of Student Activities and the adviser of the Student Programming Board, said she oversees the logistics of Manifest, including the 90 college liaisons who organize events and department showcases. She also manages the Manifest Student Production team that helps plan the event. “It is really rewarding for me to be able to see what
students are producing and seeing them enjoy [Manifest],” Bourne said. SPB will host a pop-up lounge at 900 S. Wabash Ave. featuring a “silent disco,” which is a popular activity at EDM concerts in which people can listen and dance to music while wearing headphones, said Ian Valiente, a senior business & entrepreneurship major and SPB president. The night will end with Biggest Mouth winner ConSoul, a soulful hip-hop duo, opening for local gospel rapper and headliner Sir the Baptist on the Manifest Main Stage hosted by SPB, located at Wabash Avenue and 9th Street. Valiente said ConSoul is the perfect opener for Sir the Baptist, who brings a lot of energy. Valiente added that he hopes to see Sir the Baptist’s career grow after performing, as has happened for previous headliners like Chance The Rapper who performed at Manifest in 2013. “We would like to say we are trendsetters in the music industry, at least on a [collegiate] level,” Valiente said. rom themed departmental showcases to marketing on social media, this year’s Manifest student team oversaw all the logistics required to put on the perennially successful annual urban arts festival. Creative Director Cassidy Kapson, a senior design major, led the team for the 16th festival that included three business & entrepreneurship students: Production Assistant Grace Kinter, a sophomore; Graduate Showcase Assistant Charleston Parham, a first-year graduate student; and Marketing Assistant Adriana Prieto, a second-year graduate student. Kapson said she developed the theme “animate” after being inspired by Columbia students and how they interact with the community. “Animate, as a theme, ties back [to] how we all connect and exist as these moving parts in a larger community of Chicago,” Kapson said. Kinter, who showcased work about sexual assault at Manifest last year, said she is responsible for behind-the-scenes logistics of the festival such as reading proposals, recruiting and training volunteers, and coordinating food trucks for the festival. Kinter said she wanted to get involved to experience what goes into organizing a large event like Manifest.

“Just seeing the diverse amount of students we have, they are so creative and interesting in every way,” Kinter said. “No matter what kind of person they are, everyone has a chance to shine.” Parham said he learned a lot from helping to organize the graduate showcases that will be presented May 12. He said he enjoyed working on the graduate showcase web series. He also said this is the first year he is attending Manifest. Prieto, who worked on the festival’s social media and marketing strategies, said before being accepted to Columbia, she saw videos of Manifest online and was immediately interested in getting involved. She also helped to create the first 10-episode web series showcasing departments’ work. “This web series has let me get to know every artist,” Prieto said. “That is my favorite part: how everything is connected.” Kinter researched the history of Manifest with Vice President for Student Success Mark Kelly. “Every year is so different,” Kinter said. “I can’t wait to continue to see how it grows.”
