Wabash Arts corridor crawl The Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl, a free, public event, seeks to unleash the collective power of the Wabash Arts Corridor’s creative assets, engaging all of its educational and cultural institutions and bringing synergy to local residents, businesses, students and the general public.

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 5—8 p.m. (unless otherwise listed) Welcome to the Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl! Today we unleash the collective power of the many educational and cultural institutions in our district, creating synergy with our local businesses, residents, students and general public.

The Wabash Arts Corridor is one of the city of Chicago’s most important cultural assets, home to eight educational institutions with 30,000 students—5,000 of which reside in residence halls. The crawl also consists of 19 galleries, 14 performance spaces, six major hotels and more than 40 restaurants and businesses catering to this vibrant community. The district produces more than 1,000 cultural events with annual audiences of more than 1,000,000!

Most of these assets have been in place for years, but the emergence of the Wabash Arts Corridor concept brings them all together. The Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl is our coming–out party where the rich life of our district becomes palpable.

Go out and enjoy this special day, and let this be a marker for both the Wabash Arts Corridor community and the city of Chicago. This is the day our collective power becomes understood.

Watch as Chicago’s premier ballet company, The Joffrey Ballet, rehearses works by Russian masters including choreography by George Balanchine, Yuri Possokhov and Vaslav Nijinsky at the historic Auditorium Theatre built in 1889. Refreshments will be served.

Art highlighting the political and cultural aspects of the American Deaf community of the 20th and 21st Centuries will be found here. Artists such as Ann Silver, Chuck Baird, Nancy Rourke and Susan Dupor will be highlighted. Come see and hear about the artwork described by Jim Van Manen, faculty in the ASL-English Interpretation Department.

Celebrating Columbia’s History: Dr. Lya Dym Rosenblum exhibition opening reception 600 S. Michigan Ave. | Alexandroff Center 8th Floor 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

In 1974, Dr. Lya Dym Rosenblum came to Columbia College Chicago as Associate Academic Dean. During more than 25 years, she moved Columbia steadily towards the future — receiving project grants, bringing the first computers for students on campus, building the Graduate School and becoming its first Dean. This exhibition celebrates all of that and serves as the starting point for new gifts to endow the Rosenblum and Getz Graduate Awards to benefit students far into the future.

Woof and Drash: Weaving the Jewish Experience 610 S. Michigan Ave. | Spertus Institute, First Floor 5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.

The 85 miniature tapestries in this debut exhibition by Norwegian-born artist Berit Engen are small in size but pack a punch in terms of design, execution and subject matter. Engen creates them as modern-day commentaries (in Hebrew, drash) on the engaging, joyous and at times challenging aspects of Jewish living.

Construction Reception 619 S. Wabash Ave. | A+D Gallery 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

This exhibition addresses how artists invent new realities by challenging old constructs of race, gender and national identity. These artists use a variety of strategies, such as reversing the gaze, alternating interpretations of cultural signs and examining the space between self and others through a variety of media including film, sound, sculpture, installation, drawing and photography. Construction is curated by Sabina Ott.

Department of Creative Writing Open Mic

This event features an exhibit of photographs by Archie Lieberman of different Chicago neighborhoods which were created for the book, “Chicago,” published in 1980 with photography by Lieberman and text by Robert Cromie. Only a small portion of the images were used in the book so these exhibit images have never been published or seen by the public before.

William Russo was a distinguished composer of jazz, rock, symphonic music, operas, ballets, film scores and music-theatre works. He founded the Columbia College Center for New Music (today the Music Department), serving at Columbia from 1965 until his retirement as chair of the Music Department in 2002. This exhibit is in collaboration with the Music Department panel discussions and benefit concert in December.

Columbia College Chicago razed the building that once housed Buddy Guys’ Legends and created the Papermaker’s Garden in its spot.

The urban garden showcases the natural, sustainably grown fibers for papermaking. This garden supports deep, hands-on engagement with the process of fiber production as well contemporary ideas in interdisciplinary practice related to art, science, the environment and social practice. The Papermaker’s Garden contributes to Columbia College Chicago’s sustainability initiatives, academic curriculum and engagement with the South Loop neighborhood.

The Center for Book and Paper Arts will mount a second iteration of an exhibition exploring print-on-demand photo books. Originally curated by Barbara Tannenbaum for the Cleveland Museum of Art, DIY: Photographers and Books (2012) was the first museum show to focus on the impact of print-on-demand publishing on contemporary photographic practice. This is a juried exhibition focused on photobooks that move beyond the monograph. How do photographers engage the book form in ways that are experimentally visual and conceptual while pushing the possibilities of print on demand publishing?

Slow Read presents the work of five Chicago painters alongside collections of books curated by each artist. The selected books, which range from Roberto Bolaño’s biographies of imaginary Pan-American authors to Anaïs Nin’s diaries, offer unique points of access to the complex and subtle abstract work in the exhibition. Installed among the work, these curated libraries also offer moments of respite, slowing down the viewer’s experience and allowing them time to absorb the complexities of the paintings and drawings on display.
