Today we celebrate the wonderful new street art that animates our district and unleash the collective power of our educational and cultural institutions, creating synergy with our local businesses, residents, students and the general public.

The Wabash Arts Corridor (WAC) is a “living urban canvas” and is one of the City of Chicago’s most important cultural assets, home to eight educational institutions with 30,000 students—6,000 of whom reside in residence halls. The WAC also consists of 12 galleries and special collections, 14 performance spaces, six major hotels and more than 40 restaurants and businesses.

With more than 40 events scheduled, I encourage you to explore the various events, performances, tours and experiences we have curated. Welcome to the district, and go out and enjoy this special day.

The Albert P. Weisman Award was established in 1974 to encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to complete projects in fields of communication. With projects spanning several disciplines including photography, film and video, architecture, fine art and design, the exhibition offers a wide range of artistic agendas.

The Fashion Study Collection (FSC) at Columbia College Chicago is an exceptional collection of designer garments, fashion history and ethnic dress. A hands-on academic and inspirational resource for students and researchers, the FSC was founded in 1989 and has grown to house more than 6,000 items.

Chicago native Monternez Reznell founded the Movement Revolution Dance Crew in 2010. As artistic director, Rezell takes street dance to another level by integrating the street culture into concert dance, all while paying tribute to the founders and originators of hip-hop culture. MRDC uses the elements of jazz, lyrical, contemporary and African dance to create movement that pushes the limits of dance and creates new possibilities for endless style.

Kaleidoscope: Where Fashion Meets Culture

Created by undergraduate students in Dr. Erin McCarthy’s summer “Public History” course, the exhibit takes visitors back in time to the past locations of the college. Through pictures and researched documentation, viewers learn about the history of the buildings Columbia occupied before relocating to the South Loop.

Please join us for the Vacancy: Urban Interruption and (Re)generation Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl Reception.

“Vacancy”, curated by Neysa Page-Lieberman, features the work of artist-architects who challenge the identity, value and politics of empty or abandoned space. Through three multi-tiered and multi-located projects led by Andres L. Hernandez, Emmanuel Pratt and Amanda Williams, the notion of “emptiness” is reconceived, redefined and rebuilt. The featured works demonstrate how architectural practice builds on art and activist strategies to address racial, gender and class inequities and to drive social change.

Lesley Dill: Faith and the Devil WAC Crawl Reception Columbia College Chicago’s Center for Book, Paper and Print is pleased to present “Faith & the Devil” by Lesley Dill. This large-scale installation investigates the philosophical and existential conundrums of evil and underlying faith in the world. The source and linchpin for this investigation is Big Gal Faith, an eight-foot tall female figure centered in the gallery. Her wild word hair and lavish 26-foot wide dress of drawn images and words express the main themes of the exhibit: cruelty and violence, lust, forgiveness, reflection and transcendence.

Big Gal Faith is accompanied by a word-covered, androgynous figure representing Lucifer, with words of hate on his front and words of joy on his back. Mural-sized drawings accompany Big Gal Faith and Lucifer, as a dense forest of interlocking words and images stenciled on fabric, function as a theater backdrop.

As part of the Chicago Artists Month featured programming and the Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl, Chicago-based artists Cydney M. Lewis and Sara Dehghan come together to create an environment in the gallery through their unique abstract and sculptural works. “Escape” is about pulling from the city for materials and inspiration, and creating an entirely new environment that is representative of an imaginary place full of hope—A reflection of what may exist whether livable or not, but a reminder that life as we know it is ever evolving.

There will also be live painting in front of the gallery featuring Bunny Xlv, Chantala Kommanivanh, Christie Chew-Wallace, Reanin Stone and YAMS.

The American Sign Language department will exhibit art highlighting the political and cultural aspects of the American Deaf community of the 20th and 21st centuries. Artists Ann Silver, Chuck Baird, Nancy Rourke and Susan Dupor will be highlighted along with artwork from faculty and staff.

Please join us for the Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl reception of Interdisciplinary Arts graduate student Viktor Le. Givens’ solo exhibition, “In Search of my Familiar: Dreaming South, Conjuring Tomorrow.”

The artist will read excerpts from his automythography entitled “The Inbetween Place.” Reading times are at 5:09 p.m., 6:09 p.m. and 7:09 p.m., featuring the ambient scoring of the Participatory Music Coalition.

This exhibition features recent work by Interdisciplinary installation artist Viktor Le. Givens who, after excavating his family’s historic East Texas estate, becomes enchanted by the “folk” rituals of the deep South.
