WABASH ARTS CORRIDOR CRAWL Friday, October 20, 2017 4p.m.–9p.m. (unless otherwise listed) Welcome to the annual Wabash Arts Corridor Crawl! We are glad that you are with us and encourage you to take full advantage of the exhibitions, performances and public programs available this afternoon and evening. One of the most rewarding elements of my work as Columbia College Chicago’s president has been the opportunity that it affords me to engage with the complex, evolving neighborhood the college calls home. The repurposing of existing structures and public spaces as sites for diverse forms of creative practice—exemplified most tangibly by the dozens of murals that now adorn buildings all over the South Loop—generates a special energy that is central to the Wabash Arts Corridor’s emerging identity. That energy shapes the vision and commitment of the academic, cultural and business partners who make up this singular urban district. It also informs the remarkable work created or curated by many of those partners, including our own students and faculty, that you will experience today as you traverse the exhibition and performance spaces that are open to you. So explore, look and listen, and know that we are delighted to share what we do with you. Kwang-Wu Kim President and CEO Columbia College Chicago

WAC STREET LEVEL and Threewalls present Michael Anthony Garcia’s “Tempest-Tost” Sculpture Garden | 11th and Wabash 6 p.m.–10 p.m.

“Tempest-Tost” is a corporeal embodiment of the shift being experienced by many people of color in the U.S. at this time, as our emotions and rational examination of the current political situation start to evolve into a more physical manifestation. With our bodies always being at the center of politics, we are coming full circle back from emotions of sadness, rage, and disgust and putting those same bodies back to the forefront of our expression. In particular, as the Latinx community is gaining a deeper understanding of what the African-American community has experienced for the whole of their existence here in the US, we are taking to the streets in greater numbers to protest shifts in our world such as the cancellation of DACA, mass deportations and degradation of language in our national politics that does not bode well for our specific community or nation as a whole. “Tempest-Tost” focuses attention on the exploitation of the brown body within a caricature of the Statue of Liberty, both of whom have been bastardized by capitalism. It is a reclamation of culture, pride, power, our physical forms and the words inscribed at the base of the Statute of Liberty in Emma Lazarus’ The New Colossus poem: “…Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
