2. Prior to capturing geese, the permittee is required to contact the Wildlife Management Section at the District Office. The District Office will specify the date, time and release location for the captured goslings. Geese may not be captured or released on a date other than that specified by the District Office. Goslings may not be released at any location other than that specified by the District Office.

3. If goslings are not euthanized with the adults, all goslings must be immediately and humanely transported to the receiving wildlife area at the permittee’s cost. Geese shall be transported in well ventilated trailers or vehicles (no closed caps or enclosed trailers) with 3" straw over a solid floor. Geese shall not be loaded at more than 1 goose per square foot of floor space, and geese shall not be held in captivity for more than 24 hours.

4. All adult geese (and goslings, if preferred by permittee) captured in the roundup shall be humanely euthanized (The Division of Wildlife recommends following the American Veterinary Medical Association 2013 Panel Report on Euthanasia), and the carcasses must be properly disposed of by donating to charity or educational facility, buried, or incinerated.

5. Eggs "orphaned" due to capture and euthanization of adult aggressive geese are to be properly disposed of by burial or incineration. This permit does not authorize possession of Canada goose eggs for any purpose.

6. All leg bands and neck collar numbers must be recorded below and then turned over to wildlife personnel at the receiving wildlife area at the time of gosling delivery.

Goose Roundup & Transport Instructions These guidelines are part of your State Permit authorizing you (or your designated Agent) to capture Canada geese causing conflicts and transport the goslings from your property. Any deviation from these guidelines will be considered a violation of your State Permit, making you subject to stiff penalties. All persons who handle geese during a goose roundup must have received instruction on proper goose handling techniques from Division of Wildlife or have passed the Commercial Nuisance Wild Animal Control Operators certification before capture activities are undertaken.

You must contact the District Office by June 1 to determine when geese can be captured and where you can deliver the goslings. You are responsible for coordinating and contracting all services, and for paying all associated fees and costs.

Capture During late June-early July, adult Canada geese go through a complete molt of their flight feathers which results in a temporary loss of flight capability. Also, the young goslings have not yet gained flight capability. It is during this flightless period that geese can be easily trapped using a walk-in funnel trap (see the attached figure).

To ensure a successful roundup and transport operation, several guidelines need to be followed: 1. The trap location and drive path should be determined before the trapping day (trap location should be selected so birds are shaded and close to vehicle access).

2. Safety for all persons involved (and bystanders) must be provided for.

3. Proper and humane handling of the geese must be adhered to during all phases of the operation.

To construct a walk-in funnel trap, the following materials are needed: 1. Two 50' lengths of netting for the trap wings (approx. 4-5' high).

2. 60'-80' of netting for the holding pen (approx. 4-5' high).

3. 15-20 5' steel fence posts to support the netting.

4. Post pounder.

5. Netting to cover the top of the holding pen if the geese are to be held several hours or overnight.

The trap should be set up next to the area frequented by geese. The travel lane in front of the trap should be flat to gently sloping and free of tall vegetation, vehicles, people, or other obstructions. To a large extent, the exact location of the trap will be determined by the geese.

The trap should be assembled in a circular fashion (without corners) to reduce piling and injury to the birds.

Once the trap is set up, the geese can be driven into it. Depending on the location, driving can be done by walking, wading, or by boat. The exact number of personnel or boats needed will depend on the size of the site or lake and the number of geese. Gas powered outboard motors are not recommended because they are too noisy. Canoes, rowboats, or boats with electric trolling motors work best. The geese should be surrounded on three sides with the only avenue of escape being towards the trap. Once in position, the drivers can slowly and quietly herd the geese into the trap opening. DRIVERS SHOULD MOVE SLOWLY AND DELIBERATELY and

keep noise to a minimum. Reserve clapping, talking, and arm waving for the final approach to the trap. Ensure that no personnel are standing in view near the travel lane or behind the trap.

Handling Goslings should be removed from the trap first. The proper technique is to grasp the goose or gosling by both wings and hold the wings together over the back of the body. Very young goslings with poorly developed wings (downy feathers) are picked up by grasping the entire body with one or two hands. When done properly, handling should take less than one minute per bird and will not cause any injury. Geese should be set down on their feet in the transport pen - they should not be tossed or dropped. It is your responsibility to record on your permit all leg band and collar numbers, the location where the birds were captured, and the exact number of goslings and adults captured (attach an additional sheet if necessary). Designate one person to be responsible for your record keeping. It is your responsibility to completely fill out your state permit and submit the second page of the permit to the Division personnel receiving the goslings. If you need more space on which to record leg band and neck collar numbers, or the names of assistants, you may attach an additional sheet of paper.

Transporting Transportation vehicles (e.g., trucks, trailers, etc.) must have adequate ventilation (absolutely no closed caps or enclosed box trailers) and a solid floor covered with 3 inches of straw. Geese should be loaded at no more than 1 goose per square foot of floor space. When loaded to these specifications, the birds have plenty of room to move, but are spaced closely enough to prevent injuries due to shifting during transport. Geese should be sprayed down with water periodically if temperatures are hot. To reduce stress, the entire operation, including transport to the receiving area, should be conducted in a timely manner, and completed before the heat of the day. Under no circumstances are waterfowl to be held in captivity for longer than 24 hours.

Delivery Upon arrival at the birds’ final destination, make sure that you or your Agent present your permit to the receiving Division of Wildlife representative. Division of Wildlife personnel will inspect the permit and the condition of the birds and transport vehicles to verify that all permit conditions were followed. The Division of Wildlife representative will need to record on the permit the number of geese received.
