for Suspects in Death of USC Student

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The search continues for three or four men in their 20s suspected of shooting to death a USC student who was the son of an Oakland City Council member in an apparent robbery attempt near the campus.

T happened just after midnight Sunday near the corner of Maple Avenue and Adams Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspects approached the victim and attempted to rob him, leading to the shooting, authorities said. The victim was identified as Victor McElhaney, a 21-year-old student at USC's Thornton School of Music and son of Oakland City Council member Lynette Gibson McElhaney. "It is with the utmost sadness that I share with you the tragic news that my son, Victor M c E l h a n e y, was slain last night in a senseless act of violence,'' the councilwoman said. ``I miss my baby. Please keep me, my family and all of my Interim USC son's friends in President your thoughts and prayers. Wanda Austin We are beginning a new chapter in this reoccurring circle of violence and it will take all of us together to make it through this tragedy.'' Lynette Gibson McElhaney described her son as ``a son of Oakland. $70M Magic Johnson Park Renovation Breaks Ground

Surrounded by hundreds of cheering South Los Angeles residents, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and Earvin “Magic” Johnson kicked off a $70-million renovation of the park bearing the basketball legend’s name in the community of Willowbrook. The project represents the largest investment in a park improvement ever by the County of Los Angeles, and is the first phase of a master plan that is slated to dramatically transform Magic Johnson Park over the next two decades. “We are making magic at Magic Johnson Park, and the result is going to be visionary,” Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said. “Besides providing amenities that currently don’t exist in this

community, we are enhancing the beauty of this space and creating opportunities to strengthen the bonds of this community. These improvements will be nothing

LA County Library Named as Finalist for 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced that LA County Library is among the 30 finalists for the 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, one of 15 libraries selected nationwide. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to their communities. For 25 years, the award has celebrated institutions that demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service and are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities. “The 30 National Medal finalists showcase the tremendous ability of libraries and museums to serve as vital community resources,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K.
