Suspect in Nipsey Hussle Killing Arrested in Bellflower By Staff Reports
LOS ANGELES (CNS)—A 29-year-old man suspected in the shooting death of rapper Nipsey Hussle in South Los Angeles was arrested Tuesday in Bellflower.
E
ric Holder, 29, was arrested around 1 p.m. in the 9000 block of Artesia Boulevard by Los Angeles County sheriff ’s deputies. Sheriff ’s officials could not immediately confirm the man was Holder, but Los Angeles Police Department officers were sent to verify his identity. By 2:30 p.m., the LAPD had confirmed Holder’s arrest. “Thank you to both our community for the heightened awareness/vigilance, and our partners at (the sheriff ’s department),” the LAPD stated in a Twitter post. After Initial Calm, Brief Panic at Nipsey Hussle Vigil By Dennis J. Freeman
Following two days of peace and calm, two people are hospitalized in critical condition following a stampede at the vigil memorializing slain entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle. In all, 19 people were taken to hospitals, most trampled trying to flee about 8:10 p.m. Monday in front of The Marathon Clothing store.
Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said Tuesday the vigil had been peaceful until someone in the crowd brandished a handgun, but apparently did not fire it. The chief said a person tried to disarm the person, leading to the stampede. The shooting death of Nipsey Hussle has left communities throughout Los Angeles and across the world, devastated.
As word spread that the Crenshaw native had been murdered in broad daylight, Sunday afternoon in front of his signature business on the corner of Slauson Ave. and Crenshaw Blvd., fans from across the region came to pay tribute to the late entertainer. “It’s an unfortunate situation. He means so much to this area right here, just African American people in general,”

Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore said Holder got into some type of personal dispute with the rapper outside the store, then left and returned with a handgun. Hussle was shot in the head and body and died at a hospital, according to police and the coroner’s office. Two other men were also injured in the shooting, although one declined to be taken to a hospital. Moore declined to discuss the nature of the disagreement n Arrest, see page 9
said Andre Moore. “His business mind, where he comes from, how he came up. He was an inspiration to a lot of people, and of course, he had a family. It’s a tragic situation. It’s a loss to the community, his family, the music world. It’s a tragic and unfortunate incident. It’s gotta stop at some point in time.” By Sunday evening, a throng of several hundred people made n Vigil, see page 9

NEWS Two Suspects Wounded by Deputies in Compton COMPTON (CNS)—Deputies wounded two men suspected of shooting at a Compton resident, authorities said Monday. The deputy-involved shooting was reported at 10:47 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of Alondra Boulevard, Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff ’s Information Bureau said. The deputies from the Compton sheriff ’s station were patrolling the area when they “spotted two individuals matching the descriptions of two suspects who reportedly confronted a man in his driveway nearby,” Koerner said. “During the confrontation one of the suspects
drew a firearm and fired a gunshot as the victim turned and ran.” The deputies saw that one suspect had a handgun and a deputy-involved shooting occurred, he said. “Both suspects were struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” Koerner said. Both were believed in their late teens. No deputies were injured in the shooting and a handgun was recovered at the scene, he said.

NEWS LA Leaders Hold ‘Census Call to Action’ Rally
Courtesy Supervisor Hilda Solis LOS ANGELES (CNS)—Los Angeles city and county leaders held a “Census Call to Action” rally in downtown’s Grand Park Monday to raise awareness about next year’s census in an effort to ensure that hard-to-reach populations are counted. “The 2020 Census is the first census that will be done primarily electronically, creating an additional barrier for low-income families and communities of color. I am concerned that the effort to add a citizenship question may
discourage responses, especially among immigrant communities,” county Supervisor Hilda Solis said. “Today was a clear demonstration that L.A. County will work with our municipal and community partners to support our vulnerable communities. We embrace L.A. County’s diversity and we will make every effort to count every resident.” With more than 10 million residents, Los Angeles County is considered the hardest-tocount county in the nation, Solis’ office said.
Among the challenges are that residents collectively speak 200-plus different languages, more than 70 percent are renters, and there are some populations with limited access to technology or language barriers. “The 2020 census will significantly impact how the federal government allocates funding and resources,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. “We are raising awareness a full year in advance of the 2020 census launch to ensure that
Angelenos are fairly represented in the final census count.” The 2020 census is scheduled to launch in exactly one year, on April 1, 2020. “Los Angeles is a city where everybody counts—and we’ll work hard to make sure everyone is counted in 2020,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said. “Today is about standing together to reaffirm that promise, and modeling a path that can be followed by cities and counties across America.”
Detectives Continue Search for Suspect in Dodger Stadium Fight LOS ANGELES (CNS)—The search continued Monday for a man suspected of punching a 47-year-old man at a Dodger Stadium parking lot and seriously injuring him, leaving him on life support at County/USC Medical Center, according to his family and media reports. Rafael Reyna, a father of four, was identified by his wife, Christel, in multiple media interviews as the
man who fell to the ground when he was punched and suffered a fractured skull as the crowd was leaving following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the end of 13 innings early Saturday, in the longest regular-season game in Dodger Stadium history—6 hours, 5 minutes. She told NBC4 she was on Facetime with Rafael Reyna when she
Civil Rights Leader Rainey-Pierson to Receive Honorary Degree at CSULB LONG BEACH—In honor of Women’s History Month, Long Beach State University is pleased to announce longtime civil rights activist Naomi Rainey-Pierson will receive an honorary doctoral degree from the College of Liberal Arts during this year’s commencement ceremony. Rainey-Pierson will be the fifth woman to receive such a distinction. Only 12 people have ever received an honorary degree from CSULB. “Because of my religion and background, we are taught to serve without expecting recognition, but I must’ve danced and praised the Lord for a long time because it feels good to be recognized,” Rainey-Pierson said. In 1972, Rainey-Pierson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theatre arts. She later continued her education at CSULB where she earned two master’s degrees and several teaching credentials. “Naomi Rainey-Pierson spent 50 years fighting to eliminate racial prejudice as an activist with the NAACP and Long Beach State is proud to be the place where Naomi got her start in civic activism,” said Long Beach State University President Jane Close Conoley. “Since leaving CSULB she has become an award-winning educator, philanthropist and entrepreneur and is a model of what we hope our students endeavor to achieve.” The civil rights advocate has been the president of the Long Beach branch of the NAACP since 2000. For 31 years, she has continuously donated to the university, worked to increase enrollment of women and minority students and volunteered on various campus projects. In 2012, a dorm was re-named in her honor. Rainey-Pierson hopes she inspires graduates to continue to be actively involved long after graduation. “I want my legacy to show that it’s better to be united, but even as one you can make a difference,” Rainey-Pierson said. She is expected to be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) degree during the first College of Liberal Arts ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. heard a woman yell “Why did you do that?” as a man approached her husband and cursed at him. Then she heard a crack and the screen went black. She said her husband has swelling and bleeding on the brain. Later in an interview with ABC7, Christel Reyna made a tearful plea for anyone who saw what happened to contact police. “Somebody needs to come forward,” she said. “I know people saw it. I heard them.” She and an adult son have been with her husband at the hospital, but Christel Reyna said she has not told her younger children, ages 11 to 15. A GoFundMe account has been set up for Reyna at www.gofundme. com/dodger-stadium-attack-victim-on-life-support. Initially, Los Angeles police investigated the incident as an altercation but have now labeled it an assault. The suspect, who got away, is described as a man in his 20s who might have driven off in a white SUV, possibly a Toyota 4Runner, police said. The Dodgers security team is working with police and the organization released the following statement Saturday: “Last night, an altercation occurred suddenly between two men who were leaving the stadium,” the statement said. “One of the men was injured as a result of the altercation. A witness immediately reported the incident to stadium personnel, and emergency medical technicians were promptly dispatched to provide medical assistance at the scene. The matter is now being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Dodgers are cooperating fully with the investigation.” In 2011, an attack outside Dodger Stadium left Bryan Stow of Santa Cruz severely brain-damaged. The two men who attacked him pleaded guilty in 2014 and one, Lonnie Sanchez, was sentenced to eight years in prison while the other, Marvin Norwood, received a four-year sentence. The incident prompted increased security measures at the stadium. Anyone with information on this weekend’s attack was asked to call the LAPD.

Music Center, respectively. LACMA and The Music Center are proud to partner together to present a special talk prior to the Wednesday, April 3, 2019, performance of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre at The Music Center. You’ll hear from two artists whose have followed in White’s and Ailey’s footsteps, C. Ian White, son of Charles White, and Robert Battle, current artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, as they discuss music’s ability to act as a catalyst for artists of all mediums. ‘Dreamweavers’ Art Exhibition
UTA Artist Space, 403, Foothill Rd, Beverly Hills 10:00 am To 6:00 pm http://utaartistspace.com/ - (310) 579-9850 A new exhibition at UTA Artist Space, in part the brainchild of hip-hop impresario Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean, features more than 20 leading contemporary African American and African diaspora artists who use elements of surrealism to contend with harsh realities of our time. Curated by Nicola Vassell the show “contemplates the surreal in society against a vigorously shifting 21st century” … “through the lens of artists who operate from a deeply imaginative, often provocative, psychological space.” On the walls are works by Nick Cave, Karon Davis, Cy Gavin, David Hammons, Hector Hyppolite, Arthur Jafa, Pope L, Deana Lawson, Kerry James Marshall, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Noah Purifoy, Tschabalala Self, Ming Smith, Nari Ward, Carrie Mae Weems, Charles White, and Kehinde Wiley among others.
Jamilah Sabur is a multidisciplinary artist whose work incorporates performance, video, and installation. Un chemin escarpé / A steep path (2018) is a five-channel video installation featuring her inner world, from a cricket field in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica to underwater geological features of the Caribbean sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The video bridges ritualistic practice with digital technology, evoking questions related to navigation between the material world and the transcendental plane. The piece is inspired by geophysical data taken aboard the retired research vessel Vema and the geological term escarpment, referring to a steep slope formed from erosion. In one image we encounter a figure carrying a rhombus, a recurring form in Sabur’s practice that references the architecture of her mother’s childhood home in Jamaica. Sabur also deconstructs the phenomenon known as the Rossby whistle—a frequency emitted from the Caribbean Sea every 120 days that can only be detected from space—using it as inspiration for a sequence of movements she performs in the video and it is featuring it in the score. San Diego Soul Music Festival 2019
Get ready for the San Diego Soul Music Festival 2019 with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly; Keith Sweat; Stephanie Mills and more! Maze featuring Frankie Beverly Maze featuring Frankie Beverly has had close to 30 hit singles since 1977, including nine that have charted in the R&B Top 10, and eight of the group’s 10 albums have gone gold. That success was backed by the classics “Running Away,” “Love Is The Key,” “Too Many Games,” “Can’t Get Over You,” and “Silky Soul.” The 1985 single “Back in Stride” was able to reach No. 1 on the R&B charts and has been the group’s biggest hit. Beverly says “I guess beyond what we’ve done with Maze, the second thing I’m most proud of is that we’ve supported other artists. We were the first group to give Natalie Cole a chance during her comeback years (in the mid-’80s). We took Anita Baker out as our opening act on her first national tour and did the same thing with Regina Belle and Toni Braxton…and it makes me feel great to see how each of those artists has gone to have great success.” Keith Sweat: Keith Sweat is one of the earliest practitioners, and some would say the inventor,

Blue Line Work Will Close New Work Section Starting June
LOS ANGELES—A major renovation project on a stretch of the Metro Blue Line is proceeding nearly on schedule, with a service suspension from the 103rd Street/Watts Towers Station to the Downtown Long Beach Station set to end on June 1, followed by a closure on the northern portion, it was announced Monday. As part of the $350 million modernization project, rail service was suspended in late January from the 103rd Street/Watts Towers Station to the Downtown Long Beach Station. Trains in the closure area have been replaced by a shuttle bus service. The Blue Line has continued to run between the Seventh Street/ Metro Center Station in downtown Los Angeles and the 103rd Street/Watts Towers Station. Blue Line service is scheduled to be suspended from June 1 through September between the Compton Station and the Seventh Street/ Metro Center Station downtown. Bus shuttles will again be used in the closure area to replace train service. The Blue Line will operate between the Compton Station and downtown Long Beach. During that phase of the project, service on the Metro Expo Line—which shares tracks with the Blue Line in part of downtown Los Angeles—will be suspended for 45 days at the Seventh Street/Metro Center and Pico stations. Work to modernize the Blue Line, which is Metro’s oldest rail line at 28 years, has been ongoing since 2014 and includes improvements to the signaling, tracks and the overhead wires that deliver electricity to trains, according to Metro. Four new crossover tracks will be built to reduce service interruptions, and a number of station improvements are also slated to be part of the project, including new digital map cases, signage, paint and landscaping.
Long Beach Transit to Provide Commuter Shuttles to/from Westwood
LONG BEACH (CNS)—A weekday commuter service between Long Beach and Westwood, including the UCLA campus, will begin Monday. Long Beach Transit, UCLA and the Westwood Business Improvement District are teaming to offer the service under a one-year pilot project, according to LBT officials. Commuters will be picked up from two locations in Long Beach
on weekday mornings, with stops planned in three locations in Westwood, including the UCLA campus. There will be three afternoon departures from the UCLA/Westwood area back to Long Beach. Round-trip fare for the new service is $7, or $4 one-way. Customers can also purchase a 30-day pass for $120. Discounted fares will be available for seniors and customers with disabilities.
UCLA and LBT began discussing a possible partnership following a series of public meetings in 2017 and 2018, when the transit agency asked for community input on its routes, schedules and services, according to President and CEO Kenneth McDonald. “The community asked us for service to Westwood and UCLA so they could get out of their cars,” McDonald said. “Struggling with
traffic on the 405 is not fun and we’re piloting this service to measure demand.” Long Beach Transit serves Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill, as well as portions of Artesia, Bellflower, Carson, Cerritos, Compton, Hawaiian Gardens, Los Alamitos, Norwalk, Paramount and Seal Beach. LB Bus Has a Scrape with Parked Cars; Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DUI
LONG BEACH (CNS)—A Long Beach Transit electric bus sideswiped some parked cars Monday, and the driver was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run, authorities said. The vehi-
cles were damaged around midnight on Pacific Avenue at Anaheim Road, according to the Long Beach Police Department. It was not immediately clear where officers caught up with the driver, identified as John Moreno, 48, of
Corona. He was taken to a facility for medical testing to determine if he was impaired, and was eventually booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and hit-and- run, with bail set at $30,000,
according to Long Beach police spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy. No customers were aboard the bus and no injuries were reported, Dandoy said. Long Beach Transit released a statement Monday
afternoon that read: “The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority and we take incidents like this one very seriously. We are working cooperatively with LBPD and will fully investigate this matter.”
Three Children Sue Metro Over Death of Their Mother LOS ANGELES (CNS)—Three adult children of a woman who died several months after suffering severe injuries in a fall in the parking lot of an Inglewood Green Line station are suing Metro, alleging negligence and wrongful death. Delores Thomas was left paralyzed from the March 17, 2018, fall and died June 8, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court complaint filed Friday by Andrea, Adrian and Ava Elam. The suit seeks unspecified damages. A Metro spokesman did not immediately reply to a request for comment. According to the complaint, Thomas was walking on a sidewalk in the parking lot, located on Crenshaw Boulevard, when the poorly lit walkway suddenly ended and became “an unmarked, unexpected and dangerous ditch.” Pedestrians are forced to cross the dirt area to reach where the sidewalk continues, according to the suit. Thomas did not see the step down into the dirt area, stumbled and fell forward onto her head about 7:45 p.m., the complaint says.

In late March, Maryland joined California, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Illinois in increasing the minimum wage, even though Republican governor Larry Hogan vetoed the legislation. Both houses of the Maryland legislature overrode his veto, even though he melodramatically noted that a higher minimum wage would “devastate” the Maryland economy. Unions, McDonald’s workers, and the Fight for Fifteen have fueled the national push to raise the minimum wage, especially as people have noted that wage stagnation has resulted in an extremely uneven economic recovery. While those at the top are celebrating economic growth, those at the bottom have barely experienced it. And the current minimum wage of $7.25 produces annual pay of $15,080, assuming that someone works a full 40 hours a week all 52 weeks of the year, which is often unlikely because many minimum wage jobs are part-time jobs. The Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant is need-based and financially helps low-income, undergraduate students. For the past two fiscal years, this program was funded at $1.7 billion. If the Trump Administration’s proposal holds, no monies will support this program next year. The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants are available to students whose parent or guardian was a member of the Armed Forces and died as a result of their military deployment in either Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001. In FY 2019, the average grant in this program was $5,293. In FY 2020, the White House would end it with no appropriation. These are only a few of the cuts proposed to higher education at a time when education is more important today than ever before. The global economy requires a highly-skilled and knowledgeable workforce. It seems so ironic that this White House keeps placing businesses before the needs of people. “Instead of punishing for-profit institutions that have deceived students and encouraged them to take on unaffordable levels of student debt, Secretary DeVos will defend President Trump’s proposal to extend taxpayer money to finance unproven short-term programs, many of which will be offered by these very same for-profit college,” added Goldstein. Dr. Rosie Phillips Davis Draws Upon ‘Real Story’ to Lead American Psychological Association By Dr. Sybil C. Mitchell
It’s not that Dr. Rosie Phillips Davis (formerly Bingham) feels she doesn’t appreciate news outlets all over the nation writing about her life and work. It’s just that that everyone keeps missing the real story. So what is the real story? “The real story is that I am a product of the public school system,” says Davis, who serves as the 2019 president of the American Psychological Association (APA). “I attended public schools and graduated from high school equipped and prepared to pursue higher learning. “I appreciate all the coverage – an African-American woman leading the nation’s premiere organization of psychology professionals. A compassionate advocate and practitioner, Davis believes that “injecting psychological science into the discussions around deep poverty can make a difference in the way we talk about this issue and how we write legislation to end deep poverty.” Prior to taking the helm of the APA, Davis served on the American Psychological Association Board of Directors and is past president of the Society of Counseling Psychology. She sat on the editorial boards of several journals, is author of numerous articles and book chapters on career counseling, and has co-edited two books. She is a co-founder of the National Multicultural Conference and Summit. On March 15, a terrorist carrying two semi-automatic weapons and three rifles attacked worshipers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 50 men, women, and children—some of them refugees who had fled war zones seeking safety. In the hours that followed nearly 70,000 New Zealanders signed petitions calling for gun control reform, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern led the nation’s elected leaders in vowing to take swift action. On March 21, less than a week later, Prime Minister Ardern announced the introduction of a national ban on all military-style semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles, high-capacity ammunition magazines, and parts that allow weapons to be modified into semiautomatic guns, as well as provisions for a government funded buyback of existing assault weapons. In her announcement, she said, “I absolutely believe there will be a common view amongst New Zealanders—those who use guns for legitimate purposes, and those who have never touched one— that the time for the mass and easy availability of these weapons must end.” That was leadership. As Nick Kristof wrote in a recent New York Times opinion piece: “Contrast that with the United States, where just since 1970, more Americans have died from guns (1.45 million, including murders, suicides and accidents) than died in all the wars in American history (1.4 million). More Americans die from guns every 10 weeks than died in the entire Afghanistan and Iraq wars combined, yet we still don’t have gun safety rules as rigorous as New Zealand’s even before the mosques were attacked.” I have written about this question before: How have other countries responded after a gun massacre or mass shooting? In 1996, 35 people were killed and 23 others were wounded by a gunman at the Port Arthur tourist site in Tasmania, Australia, in one of the largest massacres ever committed by a single shooter at that time. Within twelve days of the shooting, spurred by strong public support, the Australian federal and state governments agreed to the historic National Firearms Agreement (NFA), which banned semi-automatic and pump action rifles and shotguns and required registration of all firearms, strict standards for gun licenses, and a permit for each gun purchase subject to a 28-day waiting period. The NFA also prohibited private sales, regulated ammunition sales, and required licensees to receive firearm safety training and store firearms safely. To get banned rifles and shotguns off the streets, the federal government bought back or accepted turn-ins of over one million guns which were then destroyed. Some will argue that the United States is a very different place than Australia, Great Britain, or New Zealand, with entrenched attitudes equating guns with personal freedom, tens of millions more people, and tens of millions more guns, and we may never be able to expect the same success reducing the number of gun murders or mass shootings to near zero. This argument is not a valid reason to dismiss anything other countries are doing to act in favor of continuing to do nothing here. In all three of those countries extraordinary tragedies pushed a groundswell of citizens to stand up, say “no more,” and demand elected leaders take significant action. If Americans had said no more in 1999 after Columbine, there may never have been a Virginia Tech. If we had said no more after Virginia Tech, there may never have been a Fort Hood. If we had said no more after Fort Hood, there may never have been an Aurora. If we had said no more after Aurora, there may never have been a Newtown. If we had said no more after Newtown, there may never have been a Charleston. If we had said no more after Charleston, there may never have been a San Bernardino. If we had said no more after San Bernardino, there may never have been an Orlando. If we had said no more after Orlando, there may never have been a Las Vegas. If we had said no more after Las Vegas, there may never have been a Sutherland Springs. If we had said no more after Sutherland Springs, there may never have been a Parkland. This is American “exceptionalism” at its very worst. When are Americans and our elected leaders going to say “no more?” As we recognize and admire the noble response of leaders in in New Zealand to the horrific anti-Muslim massacre, we must redouble our efforts here at home to create a noble response from our leaders to children dying from guns and renew our commitment to Protect Children, Not Guns. Ten Facts on Child Gun Deaths in America 1. Guns killed a child or teen in America every 2 hours and 48 minutes in 2017. That year 3,410 children and teens were killed by a gun—68 times the 50 slain in New Zealand. 2. U.S. child and teen gun deaths could have filled 170 classrooms of 20 children in 2017. 3. 2017 marked the greatest number of child and teen gun deaths since 1998. 282 more children died in 2017 than in 2016. 4. Guns killed more children under 5 than law enforcement officers in the line of duty. 93 preschoolers died from guns compared with 42 law enforcement officers in the line of duty. 5. 1,397 Black children and teens were killed by guns in 2017. Black children and teens were 41 percent of child and teen gun deaths, although only 14 percent of their peer population. 6. The gun death rate for Black children and teens was nearly four times that of White children and teens and more than 10 times that of Asian and Pacific Islander children and teens. 7. The majority of Black child and teen gun deaths were homicides; for White children and teens, the majority were suicides. 8. Between 1963-2017, 67,421 Black children and teens were killed by guns—nearly 17 times the number of recorded lynchings of all Black people in the 74 years between 1877-1950. 9. Since 1963, 3.5 times more children and teens died from guns on American soil than U.S. soldiers killed in the Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq wars abroad. 10. Our nation has more guns than people. Although less than 5 percent of the global population, U.S. residents own nearly half (46 percent) of all civilian guns in the world—an estimated 393 million firearms.

Republicans Show Little Appetite for Trump’s Renewed Call to Kill Obamacare By Lisa Mascaro and Catherine Lucey
WASHINGTON (AP)—President Donald Trump’s decision to revive the fight over the Affordable Care Act has stirred a political and policy debate among Republicans on how best to approach the divisive issue heading into the 2020 election.
F
ailing to repeal and replace the ACA, otherwise known as Obamacare, is one of the biggest shortcomings of the president’s first term in meeting its goals. It left Republicans with a broken campaign promise, dismal approval ratings and a narrative they haven’t been able to shake—that they don’t support protecting those with pre-existing medical conditions from high-cost care. In some races, it cost Republican seats last fall, flipping House control to Democrats. For Trump, the reset he wants is clear. “The Republican Party will soon be known as the party of health care,” he said on Capitol Hill. “You watch!” But among Republican senators, there’s reluctance to embrace Trump’s new priority. Usually tight-lipped Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was given little advance notice of the president’s new push, spoke volumes when asked about it. “I look forward to seeing what the president is proposing,” McConnell told Politico. And in the House, it’s a mixed bag. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy initially panned Trump’s move, questioning the timing that collided with Trump’s bounce from the end of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election. But the GOP leader does see value in kick-starting a health care debate, said a person granted anonymity to discuss the situation. House Republicans continue to be asked about it back home and a new GOP health care bill could improve their standing with voters, the person said. What’s unclear is whether a Trump-Care bill will emerge from the White House or Capitol Hill to replace the Affordable Care Act or if the president’s push for a policy outcome fades to little more than a topic for the campaign trail. Trump discussed health care at length during a rally in Michigan Thursday and again during an appearance in Florida Friday. “We are going to have a plan that’s so much better than Obamacare,” the president promised after touring an aging dike in South Florida. For Trump, returning to health care shows his commitment to a 2016 campaign pledge and his desire to frame the 2020 debate on his terms. Stung by the Democratic gains in November and sparked by another ACA legal challenge that could make its way to the Supreme Court, the president dug into the issue this past week, deciding to fight. He feels that it is an important battle to take on, said two people familiar with White House thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly. The president has been actively engaged in conversations about health care, dialing up lawmakers in the House and Senate, and the White House is expected to lay out further details on his goals in the coming days. “We are working very hard on that,” said Trump as he was heading out to the Michigan rally, singling out Republican senators John Barrasso, Rick Scott and Bill Cassidy among those involved. “They are going to work together to come up with something that’s really spectacular,” the president said. But in truth, there is no grand Republican plan on Capitol Hill to replace Obamacare. The day after Trump dropped the new priority during a private Senate GOP lunch, a top ally, Sen. Lindsey

GOP proposals to replace Obamacare. Americans have warmed to the 2010 health care law and, in particular, its provision that prevents insurers from charging more to patients pre-existing conditions. McCarthy wants the majority back, the person said. Even though he questioned Trump’s sudden shift to health care, it has promise. The day after Trump announced his health care push, the GOP leader convened the top House Republicans from various committees to dig into the issue. “I’ll make this promise to you—and it’s a conversation I had with the president—the Republicans will make sure pre-existing conditions are protected,” McCarthy told reporters. “The president and I have talked numerous times. We talked quite often. But this is one of the conversations we have, greatly, that we support protecting pre-existing conditions.” But Republicans lost their chance to revise Obamacare when they controlled both chambers in Congress. Now, any bill will need Democratic backing to clear the House with Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s majority. At most, lawmakers envision a modest package of health care bills that could lower prescription drug prices and other reforms that have wide bipartisan support. That may or may not be enough for Trump. And if not, he can continue advocating for more on the campaign trail. At the rally in Michigan, he vowed, “It’s going to be far better than Obamacare.”
Man Awarded $80M in Lawsuit Claiming Roundup Causes Cancer
U.S. to Require Breast Density Information After Mammograms By Matthew Perrone
WASHINGTON (AP)—All U.S. women getting mammograms would receive information about breast density, which can sometimes make cancer harder to spot, under a government proposal released Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration’s proposed rules would standardize the information given to millions of women following scans to detect breast cancer. Some states already require the notices. More than half of women over age 40 have dense breasts, with less fatty tissue and more connective and glandular tissue. That tissue appears white on X-rays, the same color as growths in the breast, making mammograms harder to read. Dense breast tissue is one of the factors that can increase a woman’s chances of developing cancer. Under the FDA’s proposal, all women would receive a short summary about their breast density. For those with dense breasts, the letter would note that their tissue “makes it harder to find breast cancer,” and could require additional testing. The letter would also recommend that they speak with a doctor about their “individual situation.” More than 35 states already require some kind of notification for dense breasts. But the FDA’s proposal, if finalized, would apply to all states and set minimum standards for the information disclosed.
“We set a particular bar—you can’t go below that bar—but states can impose more stringent requirements,” said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, the FDA’s director for medical devices. The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network said the FDA proposal would “help ensure women get the most accurate information they need following a mammogram,” in a statement. Regulators will take public comments for three months before finalizing the proposal, a process that can take months or sometimes years. Professional guidelines don’t specify next steps for women identified with dense breasts, but some physicians may recommend additional forms of scanning, including ultrasound or MRI. Mammogram reports to doctors have long included information about density. But it wasn’t routinely shared with women until some cancer survivors began pushing for disclosure laws. Congress gave the FDA authority to regulate standards for mammograms in 1992 and recently directed the agency to develop standard summary language. Regulators said it was the first proposed update to national mammography standards in more than 20 years. Other proposed regulations would: • Allow the FDA to contact patients directly if their mammography provider is not meeting quality standards or disclosing required information.

NEWS Program for Veterans to Transition Home Launching Aboard USS Iowa Museum
Research reveals that veterans suffering from service-connected mental and physical disabilities, which may be exacerbated by current circumstances, are best served through specialized reverse boot camp programs such as REBOOT WorkshopsTM, designed to enhance resiliency and combat issues resulting from the inability to transition from a military to civilian mindset. OPERATION SkillBridgeTM—L.A. is guided by a research-based curriculum with the overarching goals of empowering veterans to confidently enter the civilian workplace by gaining resiliency training, pre-employment job skills training and certifications, job matching, employer engagement, and on-going community support through participating veteran service organizations. “Over 80% of transitioning military personnel are not fully prepared to reenter the job market,” said Bat-
tleship IOWA Museum President and CEO, Jonathan Williams. “This is an essential program that will reach unemployed and homeless veterans across the Los Angeles region who are in great need of assistance in order to make the transition from military service to civilian life.” Battleship IOWA Museum in alliance with National Veterans Transition Services, Inc. (NVTSI), announce the launch of OPERATION SkillBridgeTM—L.A., a field tested, community-based veteran reintegration program designed to offer unemployed, post 9/11 veterans living in Los Angeles County, workforce development training and related support. The first REBOOT WorkshopTM as part of OPERATION SkillBridgeTM will take place aboard the Battleship IOWA Museum in April 2019. In OPERATION SkillBridgeTM—L.A., each workshop in-

San Francisco Bay Area property for years. The same jury previously found that Roundup was a substantial factor in Hardeman’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “Today, the jury sent a message loud and clear that companies should no longer put products on the market for anyone to buy without being truthful, without testing their product and without warning if it causes cancer,” said Jennifer Moore, one of Hardeman’s attorneys. Hardeman and his wife thanked their attorneys and jurors but declined additional comment. A different jury in August awarded another man, Dewayne Johnson, $289 million, but a judge later slashed it to $78 million. Monsanto has appealed. Hardeman’s trial may be more significant than that case. U.S. Judge Vince Chhabria is overseeing hundreds of Roundup lawsuits and has deemed Hardeman’s case and two others “bellwether trials.” The outcome of such cases can help attorneys decide whether to keep fighting similar lawsuits or settle them. Legal experts said verdicts in favor of Hardeman and the other test plaintiffs would give their attorneys a strong bargaining position in any settlement talks for the remaining cases before Chhabria. Bayer says all government regulators that have looked at the issue have rejected a link between cancer and glyphosate. Monsanto developed glyphosate in the 1970s, and the weed killer is now sold in more than 160 countries and widely used in the U.S. The herbicide came under increasing scrutiny after the France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization, classified it as a “probable human carcinogen” in 2015. Lawsuits against Monsanto followed, and thousands are now pending nationwide. Monsanto has attacked the international research agency’s opinion as an outlier. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says glyphosate is safe for people when used in accordance with label directions.

Career job matching is based on course completion and on the veteran’s career Dynamic Natural Abilities (DNA). “We are pleased to partner with Battleship IOWA Museum, the veteran training providers and employers in the Los Angeles region to coordinate workforce development with employer needs, and help veterans create their own productive and contributive future,” said Maurice Wilson, NVTSI’s co-founder, President and Executive Director. The OPERATION SkillBridgeTM—L.A. training will be fa-
cilitated through multiple partners, with some funding provided by the state Employment Training Panel (ETP), and through relationships via local Workforce Investment Boards. Placement, follow-up and community support will be performed by the Battleship IOWA Museum veterans employment peer navigators and community partners. Services will be provided at no cost to the participants and will be offered to veterans who may be under-employed, seeking employment and to those with barriers to gainful employment, such as homeless veterans living in HVRC programs. Battleship IOWA Museum is located at 250 South Harbor Boulevard, Berth 87 in San Pedro. County Extends Hours at Grief Center in Response to Hussle Killing
LOS ANGELES (CNS)—In response to the weekend killing of rapper Nipsey Hussle in South Los Angeles, county health officials said today they will offer extended hours at a local center that provides grief counseling and support to the community. “During this time of mourning, we invite anyone that needs access to grief and loss services and other support to visit our Community Healing and Trauma Prevention Center,” county health director Barbara Ferrer said. The center, which will offer extended hours between 4 and 7 p.m. through Friday, is located at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Public Health, 11833 Wilmington Ave. Walk-ins are welcome. According to the county, the center “provides a safe community space to support dialogue and mobilization of community resources every day, and especially during these tragic events.”

between Holder and Hussle, but stressed the shooting appeared to be a result of that dispute, not any type of gang rivalry or feud—despite what he described as a recent uptick in gang violence in the area. “We believe this to be a dispute between Mr. Hussle and Mr. Holder,” Moore said. “I’m not going to go into the conversations, but it appears to be a personal matter between the two of them.” After the shooting, Holder was seen getting into a passenger seat of a white, four-door 2016 Chevrolet Cruze with California license plate 7RJD742, Moore said. The car was driven by an unidentified female. The Los Angeles Times reported that the woman had surrendered to police, but the LAPD could not immediate confirm the report. At a news conference Tuesday morning at LAPD headquarters, Moore mourned Hussle’s death. “We join, as does all of Los Angeles, in a somber day in the aftermath of a senseless, another senseless homicide, of an individual who posed such an opportunity to step into a conversation to help this city work its way through a sickness, a challenge, a seemingly tragic love affair with gun violence.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called for the community to work together and refrain from more violence.
“The absolute worst way to pay back Nipsey’s loss— somebody we lost at the hands of violence—is with more violence.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti “We have a reason to feel hopeful, even in the moments of our most extreme pain,” Garcetti said. “And that’s by turning to each other. We saw that, and we’ve seen that, since Nipsey was taken from us. That love that is out there—and I ask everybody who is grieving for him to grieve for the families of those other victims as well whose lives were just as important and just as significant. ... “The absolute worst way to pay back Nipsey’s loss—somebody we lost at the hands of violence—is with more violence,” Garcetti said. Hussle had been scheduled on Monday to meet with Moore and Los Angeles Police Commission President Steve Soboroff to discuss ways of combating gang violence. Soboroff on Tuesday morning read for reporters the email he received from Hussle in February requesting the meeting. He said the gathering will eventually be held in his honor, with members of Hussle’s family and representatives of Roc Nation, the entertainment production company founded by Jay-Z. “The meeting will happen,” Soboroff said. Hussle transformed himself from a South Los Angeles gang member to a rap musician, and channeled his success into efforts to help other stay out of gangs. He bought shoes for students, re-paved basketball courts and provided jobs and shelter for the homeless. Hussle helped renovate a MidCity roller rink and redeveloped the strip mall that housed his Marathon Clothing shop where he was fatally wounded. Surveillance video from a business across the street obtained by TMZ appears to capture Sunday’s shooting. The video shows a suspect walking to the clothing store, where multiple people were standing outside. The shooting occurs quickly afterward, although it cannot be clearly seen on the video. But one person can be seen falling to the ground, and at least three people are seen running from the parking lot.

LOS ANGELES (AP)— Beyoncé was named entertainer of the year at the 50th annual NAACP Image Awards that highlighted works by entertainers and writers of color.
A
fter Beyoncé accepted the award Saturday night, the superstar paid homage to the people who were nominated in the same category as her. She beat out Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, Regina King, Chadwick Boseman and director Ryan Coogler. “Regina King, I love you so much. You taught us patience, persistence and how to be masterful in your craft,” she said. “Chadwick Boseman is teaching children to dream and to be seen as kings. LeBron James has taught us the strength of all forms, leading by example
and providing education to our kids. Ryan Coogler tells our stories in a way that celebrates our history and proves we do have power.” Beyoncé added: “I’m honored to be included among all of you, and to be a part of a vital and thriving community. Thank you to the NAACP.” Beyoncé released a joint album last year with her husband, Jay-Z, called “Everything is Love.” The prolific singer also paid tribute to historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the dance troupes and step teams during her groundbreaking two-hour Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival performance. She also performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is known as the national Black anthem, at the festival and donated $100,000 to four Black universities shortly after her performance. Jay-Z received the President’s Award for the rapper’s public service achievements. He was recognized for his efforts through his Shawn Carter Foundation and serving as
co-founder of the REFORM Alliance. The rapper executive produced the documentaries “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” and “Time: The Kalief Browder Story,” along with an animated documentary short called “The War on Drugs is an Epic Fail.” Jay-Z quoted Abraham Lincoln after he accepted his award and dedicated his trophy to his 93-year-old grandmother Hattie White, saying: “She’s so full of life.” He also paid homage to the women in his life, including his wife, Beyoncé, who smiled while her husband made his speech. “It’s not the amount of years in your life. It’s the amount of life in your years,” he said. “That quote embodies my beautiful grandmother.” “Black Panther” was awarded best motion picture. The superhero film was a cultural phenomenon. It earned $700 million domestically during it theatrical run. “Black Panther” won in several other categories, including
best actor in a motion picture (Boseman), supporting actor in a motion picture (Michael B. Jordan) and directing in a motion picture (Coogler). Anthony Anderson returned as host of the show and won for best actor in a comedy series. He opened the awards speaking about “Black excellence” in film, hoping his behavior wouldn’t get him removed as host and made several jokes including one about Kanye West not being invited to cookouts. Anderson brought his mother onstage with him and dedicated his award to “the woman who raised me in Watts and pushed me to become an actor.” “Everything I do on screen is for you momma,” Anderson said of his mother, who clutched his award. Donald Glover, who won four Grammys this year, won for his directing on “Atlanta.” On the music side, his alter-ego Childish Gambino’s song “This is America” won for best music video.
LAS VEGAS (AP)—Jonathan McReynolds was the top winner at the Stellar Gospel Music Awards, taking home six trophies during a ceremony that included a posthumous tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Thanks to his album “Make Room,” Chicago gospel artist McReynolds was crowned artist of the year Friday night and his song “Not Lucky” was named song of the year. He also took home honors for best contemporary male vocalist, contemporary CD and producer of the year. Jekalyn Carr was named female vocalist of the year and The Walls Group won the award for duo/chorus group of the year. The best new artist trophy went to Jabari Johnson. The tribute to Franklin was performed by Kelly Price, Regina Belle and Erica Campbell. Members of Franklin’s family were presented with the inaugural Aretha Franklin ICON Award. Gospel legend Delores Washington Green of The Caravans was given the Legend Award. And James Robinson Jr., Jackie Patillo and Phil Thornton were inducted into the Stellar Honors Hall of Fame. Kirk Franklin returned to host the live taping of the awards show at Las Vegas’ Orleans Arena. The Stellar Awards will be telecast on BET on April 19.
Cancellations of Latino-Themed Shows Spark Anger, Reflection By Russell Contreras
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP)—Netflix’s cancellation of “One Day at a Time” has led to an outcry on social media by the show’s viewers. And fans of CW’s “Jane the Virgin” are preparing to say goodbye to a show entering its fifth and final season.
T
he departure of the two Latino-themed shows demonstrates the challenges such projects still encounter on networks and streaming services. Networks may feel pressure to tap into the growing Latino population - now the largest minority group in the U.S. - but the shows often receive limited promotions and are on a short leash from executives who want to see good ratings fast. Advocates of more diversity on television say these shows are often given difficult time slots or are buried deep in the maze of streaming apps. “It was such a bummer with ‘One Day at a Time’,” Mishel Prada, who plays Emma in the Starz series “Vida,” told The Associated Press. “Things are changing, but it hasn’t changed (enough).” ABC faced a similar reaction when it canceled the 2014 sitcom “Cristela,” starring stand-up comedian Cristela Alonzo, after one season. The show aired late on Fridays and averaged around 5 million viewers. Likewise, Fox drew criticism when it canceled the 2016 adult animated sitcom “Border-
town,” also after one season, despite its cult following in a tough Sunday timeslot. The cancellations of “Cristela” and “Bordertown” drew anger from Latino audiences and demands that networks produce more shows with Hispanic characters. William Nericcio, a professor at the Center for Latin American Studies at San Diego State University and co-author of the upcoming book “Talking (hash)BrownTV: Latinas and
Latinos on the Screen,” said there is a hunger for Latino-themed shows. “But the business is the business. Shows need viewers,” Nericcio said. “It’s show business, not show art.” For shows to be successful, they must overcome limited publicity from networks and sometimes must rely on word-of-mouth recommendations, Nericcio said. The success of Netflix’s “Roma,” for example, was driven by the streaming service’s public relations campaign
but also by Mexican-Americans who rallied around its star, Yalitza Aparicio, the Oscar-nominated indigenous Mexican actress. “Roma” appeared to signal that Latino-themed shows and movies might get more support from networks, Nericcio said. While fans lament the end of “One Day at a Time” and “Jane the Virgin,” other TV shows featuring U.S. Latino characters are trying to capture the attention of fragmented audiences, including those looking for diversity.
Starz is scheduled in May to unveil the second season of “Vida,” which follows two Mexican-American sisters in East Los Angeles. This month, Netflix is releasing the second season of the teen dramedy “On My Block,” set in a working-class Latino and Black neighborhood in Southern California. And Nickelodeon is putting the final touches on “The Casagrandes,” a spinoff of its animated series “The Loud House,” featuring a Latino family. “Jane the Virgin,” starring Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, is a reboot of the Venezuelan telenovela “Juana La Virgen” and saw its ratings slowly decline since it debuted in October 2014. Its final season began Wednesday and the finale is scheduled for this summer. But it was the end of “One Day at a Time” that sparked the most recent social media furor. The show, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, starred Justina Machado as a single, Cuban-American mom and military veteran, and Rita Moreno as her mother. It was a reboot of the original “One Day at a Time,” which was co-created by Norman Lear and aired from 1975-’84 with stars Valerie Bertinelli and Bonnie Franklin. Prada, of “Vida,” was among those who took to Twitter to express their displeasure. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” called on other networks to save the show. “We’re gonna do everything we can,” he wrote on Twitter. “(By we I mean US, YOU AND ME, the fans of this thing).”
