COMPTON—The City Council moved another step forward in the city manager search on Tuesday, April 27, as Council members Willie Jones, Janna Zurita and Yvonne Arceneaux interviewed five candidates during a special meeting. Mayor Eric J. Perrodin did not attend the meeting because of a conflict involving current interim City Manager Bryan Batiste and Councilwoman Janna Zurita. Batiste took over for former interim City Manager Lamont Ewell on Jan. 25. “City Manager Bryan Batiste wrote a memo to City Attorney Craig Cornwell requesting that Councilperson Zurita recuse herself from the interview process,” Perrodin said in a written statement. “I will not participate until the Council receives a written opinion from Cornwell about the disagreement.” Zurita said Batiste is only holding the position until the Council finds a permanent city manager. “The accusations that everyone is making have no validity to them, and the Council will continue searching for a qualified candidate,” The county forcetemwill By Elizabeth Marcellino she said. “He knew going in this task was only next reach out to the Pomona Los Angeles porary. News Compton teens charged with Irvine burglaries By Staff Reports Two men have been charged with a series of burglaries in Irvine, according to court records obtained Thursday. Joseph Paul Wilson and Jamir Omar Crosby, both 19 and of Compton, were arrested early Tuesday, according to Kim Mohr of the Irvine Police Department. Crosby posted bail and was released from jail Wednesday. He is scheduled to be arraigned July 20. Wilson, being held on $30,000 bail, was due in court again next Thursday for a pretrial hearing.
Wilson pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one felony count of burglary as well as three counts of commercial burglary and a count of possession of burglary tools, all misdemeanors. Crosby is charged with a felony count of burglary as well as one misdemeanor count each of possession of more than an ounce of marijuana and possession of burglary tools. He also faces an infraction for an illegal license plate covering. Police responded to a burglary alarm about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at Honey Berry, 14775 Jeffrey Road. When
they arrived, the glass door entrance was smashed but no suspects were there, Mohr said. A short time later, police on patrol at a nearby shopping center at Irvine Center Drive and Sand Canyon spotted a suspicious vehicle and stopped the car, Mohr said. One of the men in the car was attempting to hide in the back seat and the other man had broken glass on his clothes and a cut hand, Mohr said. Police found a crowbar on them and one of the suspects allegedly admitted breaking into the Honey Berry store as well as a Togos restaurant and

Jury convicts man of trying to kill wife By Cat Keniston One day after convicting a man of trying to kill his estranged wife at her South Los Angeles home, jurors found him guilty Tuesday of spousal rape. Bryan Keith Mitchell, 32, is facing a maximum possible sentence of life in state prison, with sentencing set for July 20 at the Compton courthouse. Mitchell was convicted Monday of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon for the Sept. 5, 2015, attack on his estranged spouse. Jurors were sent back to deliberate further on the spousal rape charge, on which they subsequently found him guilty. Jurors also found true allegations that he personally used a bat during the commission of the crime and personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim, who had a restraining order against him at the time, according to Deputy District Attorney Craig Rouviere.

Shopping center targeted as nuisance
The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office filed a nuisance abatement suit Tuesday against the owners of a South Los Angeles shopping center about a half-dozen blocks west of the flash point of the 1992 riots, alleging gang members freely congregate there and commit crimes. Mahmood and Rosa Harati have owned the property in the 2000 block of West Florence Avenue since 2004, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit. The suit seeks an injunction against the Haratis and an order compensating the city for the costs of abating the nuisance. The couple could not be immediately reached for comment. “In recent years, members of (a street gang) and their associates have freely engaged in criminal and violent behavior at or immediately around the property, in addition to loitering in the property’s parking lot on a daily basis,” the suit states. Properties that fall under the grip of a gang “become toxic to the people in their vicinity,” the suit states. Six businesses are located at the center, including Mahmood Harati’s prosthetics store and a medical marijuana business that is operating there illegally, the suits states. “The property is located near several sensitive sites, including two middle schools, an elementary school and numerous churches,” the suit states. “The property’s physical appearance is unkempt and sends the distinct message that no one, with the possible exception of the gang, is in charge.” The intersection of Florence and Normandie avenues, a short distance east of the shopping center, is generally considered to be the starting point of the 1992 riots after the acquittal of four LAPD officers accused of the beating of Altadena resident Rodney King.

said other venues create a similar draw. “While some of us see it as good news that you have Los Angeles being a sports mecca, (let’s) not ignore the underbelly,” RidleyThomas said. Ridley-Thomas added that the sheriff’s department and the District Attorney’s Office should plan to sit down with the owners and developers of sports venues. “(They) need to know we expect their partnership,” Ridley-Thomas said. Strategies to target demand include identifying probationers convicted of other crimes who have a known history of pimping and stealth tracking of online predators. The sheriff’s department plans to join Cities Empowered Against Sexual Exploitation (CEASE), a network operating in several cities that aims to cut the sex trade by 20 percent over two years. Marks said the network would help the department partner with technology
companies to develop online techniques for disrupting the sex trade and messaging campaigns to deter would-be buyers. “No buyers, no business,” is a rallying cry for CEASE. The District Attorney’s Office is pressing for felony convictions where appropriate, in order to maximize jail time, said Jane Creighton, coordinator for the District Attorney’s Office’s Human Trafficking Unit. The typical charge for soliciting is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sixmonth jail term and the recommended term for first offenders is two days in county jail. But even those two days are often waived at a judge’s discretion. “Someone will come forward and give a sob story and the judge will end up waiving those two days,” Creighton said. Where minors are involved, prosecutors look for a felony charge that could force those charged to register as sex offenders, she said.

News Pride and prejudice? Race tinges LGBT celebrations By Deepti Hajela NEW YORK—Gay pride marches in New York City, San Francisco and in between this weekend will have plenty of participants—and also protests directed at them from other members of the LGBT community, speaking out against what they see as increasingly corporate celebrations that prioritize the experiences of gay white men and ignore issues facing black and brown LGBT people. The protests disrupted other pride events earlier this month. In Washington, D.C., the No Justice No Pride group blocked the parade route. In Columbus, Ohio, four people were arrested after a group set out to protest violence against minority LGBT people and the recent acquittal of a police officer in the shooting death of Philando Castile, a black man, during a traffic stop. “Nobody wants to feel dropped in a community that prides itself on diversity,” said Mike Basillas, one of the organizers of the planned New York City protest action by No Justice No Pride. In Minneapolis, organizers of Sunday’s Twin Cities Pride Parade asked the police department to limit participation following the acquittal of police officer Jeronimo Yanez in the death of Castile. The openly gay police chief said the decision was divisive and hurtful to LGBT officers, which the organizers acknowledged. But Twin Cities Pride Board Chairwoman Darcie Baumann said the decision was made to be sensitive to those grieving after the verdict “and seeing those uniforms brings angst and tension and the feeling of unrest.” In Philadelphia, where racial relations in the LGBT community are beginning
to mend after a year of community protests, the introduction of a rainbow flag—the traditional symbol of LGBT unity and diversity— that added black and brown stripes to represent blacks and Latinos has spilled over into a national debate. The recent flare-up of racial tensions comes as no surprise to Isaiah Wilson, director of external affairs for the National Black Justice Coalition, one of the few national groups focused specially on black LGBT rights. He said the broader LGBT-rights movement “has been whitewashed”— dominated to a large extent by white gay men. “Black queer and trans folks have always been there, but our contributions have been devalued,” Wilson said. He said major LGBTrights groups need to be frank in discussing the issue of racism, as well as recruiting and supporting nonwhite leaders. “Until the mainstream LGBT groups address this, we’re not going to move forward and you’ll continue to see this pressure,” Wilson said. “In my opinion, the pressure is good—it has us talking.” Shannon Minter, a white attorney who is the legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, said LGBT people of color were justified in challenging racist aspects of the LGBTrights movement. “The real test will be, can the LGBT movement own up to its historic legacy of racism and evolve to be more accountable and inclusive of people of color?” Minter, a transgender man, wondered. “If not, then it will cease to be a major political movement.”
Photo by Seth Wenig People on a float dance and wave flags during the 2014 annual pride parade in New York. One reason for the tensions, according to some activists, is a racial divide when it comes to the LGBT-rights movement’s agenda. For years, many national groups focused on legalizing samesex marriage nationwide—a goal achieved in 2015. For many LGBT people of color, there continue to be more pressing issues, such as economic inequality, policing and incarceration. “In a lot of places, we’re just trying to survive,” said Wilson. That divide has led to controversy when attempts have been made to address race, as in Philadelphia.
The city drew criticism last summer when activists raised concerns that the Gayborhood—the city’s main gay enclave—discriminated against blacks. Gay blacks complained of dress codes banning Timberlands and sweatpants, of not being served in a timely manner at bars and of being stopped and asked for identification at clubs while white customers walked in unbothered. In January, Philadelphia officials issued a report confirming longstanding racism in the Gayborhood and pledged to penalize businesses that did not make changes. Earlier this month,
the city unveiled a new flag meant to be a more inclusive reflection of gay pride, with a
black and brown stripe added to the existing rainbow motif. The flag’s introduction stirred heated commentary from supporters as well as those who felt it was interjecting race unnecessarily. Pride organizers around the country have taken steps to address the criticisms. In San Francisco, Sunday’s pride event will be led by groups including the Bayard Rustin LGBT Club, SF Black Community Matters, African Human Rights, and Bay Area Queer People of Color. In New York City, the march organizers are putting a contingent of groups more focused on protest than celebration at the head of the event. The LGBT community does need to confront these issues, said Michelle Meow, an Asian-American woman who is board president of San Francisco Pride, and “the pride celebration is a platform for that dialogue to happen.” New York City spokesman James Fallarino said if there are any disruptions or protests during the event, “We’re going to make sure we do everything in our power to respect the people who are disrupting or protesting and to respect their message.”

Prayers for a more just nation “Might it be that this land with all of its richness, with all of its opportunity for true greatness, its opportunity to present itself before the world as what a nation ought to be, might not be sowing the seeds of its very destruction in abandonment of its children?” —Dr. Gardner Taylor, Pastor Emeritus, Concord Baptist Church, 1996 sermon at the Children’s Defense Fund’s Haley Farm By Marian Wright Edelman Our nation has lost its way as Congress stealthily debates dismantling Medicaid and the health safety net for the neediest children and adults. And as we await the Congressional Budget Office’s cost and impact report and the final outlines of the Senate health care proposal, the only thing I
can think of at this moment is to pray for our leaders to rediscover some semblance of common sense and moral decency. Protect the 37 million children on Medicaid and the millions of disabled adults and others for whom it is an indispensable lifeline. I hope enough of us will let our voices be heard loudly and clearly in the Congress,
the White House and in Statehouses: babies’ health care should not be capped and cut to give more tax breaks to billionaires. Poor and disabled children and the elderly should not be hurt to give powerful corporations greater profits, and healthy births to mothers should not be jeopardized to subsidize tax cuts for millionaires.
A Prayer for Children© (By Ina J. Hughs) We pray for children who put chocolate fingers everywhere, who like to be tickled, who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants, who sneak Popsicles before supper, who erase holes in math workbooks, who can never find their shoes. And we pray for those who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire, who’ve never squeaked across the floor in new sneakers, who never “counted potatoes,” who are born in places we wouldn’t be caught dead, who never go to the circus, who live in an X-rated world. We pray for children who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions, who sleep with the dog and bury goldfish, who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money, who cover themselves with Band-aids and sing off key, who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink, who slurp their soup. And we pray for those who never get dessert, who watch their parents watch them die, who have no safe blanket to drag behind, who can’t find any bread to steal, who don’t have any rooms to clean up, whose pictures aren’t on anybody’s dresser, whose monsters are real. We pray for children who spend all their allowance before Tuesday, who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food, who like ghost stories, who shove dirty clothes under their bed and never rinse out the tub, who get visits from the tooth fairy, who don’t like to be kissed in front of the carpool, who squirm in church and scream in the phone, whose tears we sometimes laugh at and whose smile can make us cry. And we pray for those whose nightmares come in the daytime, who will eat anything, who have never seen a dentist, who aren’t spoiled by anybody, who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep, who live and move, but have no being. We pray for children who want to be carried, and for those who must. For those we never give up on, and for those who don’t get a second chance. For those we smother, and for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer. ** O God, forgive and transform our rich nation where small babies die of cold quite legally. To stink, or not to stink, that is the question Dr. James L. Snyder There are all kinds of questions in this world of ours. Most are rather annoying. It would not surprise me in the least if there were a gang of hooligans somewhere hired to make up silly questions. If I could find this gang, I would disperse them immediately, without a question. Of course, there is the fact that the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage is in cahoots with these question-makeruppers. Every once in a while she comes up with questions for Yours Truly. It is not the questions I object to but rather the answers I am supposed to give in connection to the questions. My wife has a silly notion that the answers I give should be in direct correlation to the questions she asked. Who made up this rule? Oops, that was a question. Sorry about that. It is my opinion, and mine alone, especially in my home, that if I am asked a question I should have the option to give the answer I want to give whether it relates to the question or not. My wife insists my answer should be a response to her question. More times than I care to admit, when my wife is asking her second question, I am still thinking about her first question. By the time she had gotten to her sixth question, I have formed an answer for that first question. And when she asks her tenth question, I am answering her first question. It is all very confusing to me because she always says, “That was not what I asked you?” It was but she was so far ahead of me that it is virtually impossible for me to catch up. So, if I cannot catch up, I catch flak. Last week, for example, she put to me a very penetrating question. “What is that awful smell?” I would not have taken offense to the question so much, but she was looking straight at me when she posed it. What I took from the question was that I, for some reason unbeknownst to me, smelled pretty bad. Even though it was not Saturday night, I took the hint and marched my raunchy body to the bathroom for a bath. I just took for granted that there was an odor around. I do have a nose, but the primary function of my nose is to be a resting place for my spectacles. Something has to be awful for me to smell it. My wife, on the other hand, has superhuman smelling properties. She can smell a rotten apple while it is still a blossom on the apple tree. I thought the question of “What stinks?” had been thoroughly answered.
So, I dressed and got in my car to go to the office. On the drive to the office, I noticed something rather peculiar. My car stank. There was some terrible odor in my car that I could not identify. I knew it could not be me since I had just come from a fresh bath only a few moments ago. But there was an unmistakable stench in the car. I arrived at my office, got seated behind my desk and began some work when I noticed something peculiar. My office stank. It smelled as if some old alley cat had found its way into my office, crawled behind a bookcase, and died... two weeks ago. I began searching the office for the decaying carcass creating such a disgusting odor in my office. Finally, I gave up and went home. Before I could tell my wife about the problem at the office and in the car, she surprised me with another question. “What is that awful smell?” She was looking straight at me with the obvious conclusion that the smell was coming from my direction. By this time, I too was noticing the smell so it must have been something rather awful. I just knew it could not have been me because only two hours ago I immersed myself in the bubbly and vigorously scrubbed off any odor that might have been lodged on my body. I even threatened my body with a Brillo pad. I knew the odor was not on me. “Where is that smell coming from?” my wife demanded as she approached me with her nostrils flaring. The closer she got to me the more her nose wrinkled in agony. It was then she made a startling conclusion. “That odor is coming from you. You stink.” Well, if words could kill you would be reading a very nice obituary in the newspaper this morning. I was deeply offended by this observation. When she got close to me, she examined my person very carefully and then looked down at my shoes. “How long have you had those shoes?” They were my favorite shoes so I had them quite a long time. I mumbled something like about five years. “Aha, it is your shoes that stink. Those shoes are rotten and you will have to throw them out. I do not want to see those shoes in this house ever again.” I was reminded of a verse in the Bible. “For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.” (Jeremiah 2:22 KJV). You can clean up all you want to but if you are still wearing rotten shoes you still stink.

Opinion Production portraying Caesar as Trump obscures Shakespeare’s warning against political violence By Robert Romano Does the portrayal of Julius Caesar as President Donald Trump in New York City Public Theater’s production of William Shakespeare’s play of the same name in Central Park, where Caesar is stabbed to death, miss the Bard’s central warning of the perils of political violence? As readers are familiar— or ought to be familiar—with, things do not turn out so well for the conspirators both historically and in the course of the play, which does not end after the assassination. In the final act, the Caesarian party of Antony and Octavius win and everyone knows what happens next— of they should—the emperors come to rule Rome, not the Senate. Arguably, the conspirators against Caesar ultimately created the very circumstances they sought to counter by killing Caesar. The plan backfired. In many respects, the play as written portrays the tragedy of Brutus, the assassin, who in Act III is haunted by Caesar’s ghost and in the end himself is killed. If the Public Theater portrayal, then, was intended to incite—I do not like to think it was—but if it was, then it sadly missed the historic implications and error of Brutus’ tragic actions. Shakespeare’s message, clear as day, was to be careful what you wish for. This hits home in Act III, Scene 2, in the forum, after Marc Antony delivers his famous eulogy, and the Roman people consider his comments. After some discussion over whether the assassination was right or wrong, the third citizen counters—sagely—that “I fear there will a worse come in his place.” This is a moment of dramatic irony, where the
audience knows that it is the third citizen who was correct—Caesar’s death led directly, after some years, to the founding of the empire — or at least, they are supposed know that. More on that in a moment. Alternately, had the Senate instead worked with Caesar, would there ever have been the emperors? Obviously, there is no way to know for certain, but it is hard not to watch “Julius Caesar”— or other portrayals such as HBO’s “Rome”—and not conclude that the opposition to and assassination of Caesar played as much a role in the destruction of the republic as the civil wars they provoked. As it turns out, these themes were apparently not lost on the production of the play, who in a statement on June 12 said, “Our production of ‘Julius Caesar’ in no way advocates violence towards anyone. Shakespeare’s play, and our production, make
the opposite point: those who attempt to defend democracy by undemocratic means pay a terrible price and destroy the very thing they are fighting to save. For over 400 years, Shakespeare’s play has told this story and we are proud to be telling it again in Central Park.” How horrified, then, the production must have been with how its performance was received—and portrayed in mainstream media outlets in a 30-second clip that millions more saw and then reacted to—as focused solely on the imagery of Trump’s assassination. The Public Theater would have never had to issue such a statement in London in Shakespeare’s time, but then again, Shakespeare in his right mind would have never, ever portrayed Caesar as Queen Elizabeth whilst she was on the throne. By dressing Caesar up as Trump, the play became a
perversion, a parody, even, of Shakespeare’s stark warning against political violence. If the intent was not to incite, the portrayal was surely folly. Days later, U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise was shot. By then, all pretense of admonishing political violence was lost in the spectacle. Protestors attempted to stop the production and denounce the violence. “The blood of Steve Scalise is on your hands!” Laura Loomer shouted as she took to the stage before being removed. All at once, Public Theater’s play was timely, clever and yet obscenely illconsidered and provocative since, nationally, the only message that got through was that of assassinating Trump. The subsequent shooting of Scalise, coupled with comedian Kathy Griffin’s prior depiction of decapitating Trump, only cemented public attitudes
against these acts. In a manner, then, the Public Theater succeeded— although not for the reasons it intended—for now the public has roundly rejected the violence. But not all have deplored the violence or will. The everpresent struggle in republican forms of government historically has been to keep the beast of political violence in its cage. Unfortunately, Public Theater’s production has been viewed as a symbolic call to arms for Trump’s opponents to take matters into their own hands, celebrating the violence and inciting it. The production should have anticipated such a response. Even if the play Shakespeare wrote was originally supposed to deplore such acts, this modern iteration was beyond the pale. It was not Antony’s eulogy or the Romans in the forum running on the nightly
We pause to remark
news, it was the spectacle of the assassination of the sitting president. If it bleeds, it leads. Which raises perhaps a greater problem, where many Americans appear not to be aware or appreciate that extreme acts—for example, relying on the Justice Department and intelligence agencies to depose Trump with fictions of Russia collusion in undemocratic fashion—might lead, as the third Roman citizen warned, “a worse [to] come in his place.” Republics, at their core, are fragile things. To survive, the freedom from political violence must be maintained. The peaceful transfer of power respected. How horrific, then, it is to watch as even warnings against such violence, like Shakespeare’s magnificent play, have now been perverted to play the role of the inciter. As the Bard wisely warns via Antony in the eulogy, “The evil that men do lives after them.” Have we, as a society, forgotten this historical truth? Robert Romano is the senior editor of Americans for Limited Government.

Criminal Justice Spokesman: Cosby plans tour to educate youth on misbehavior
Juror: Cosby panel was concerned about ‘politics’ of case AP Photo by Matt Rourke Bill Cosby exits the Montgomery County Courthouse after a mistrial in his sexual assault case. By Joe Mandak and Michael Rubinkam PITTSBURGH—A juror in Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial said Thursday that some jurors were concerned that prosecutors waited 10 years to charge him, expressing suspicion that politics had played a role in the case. The juror told The Associated Press that the panel was almost evenly split in its deliberations, with a similar number of jurors wanting to convict the 79-year-old entertainer as acquit him on charges he drugged and molested a woman at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004. He was the second juror to speak out after the jury deadlocked in the case. A mistrial was declared Saturday after 52 hours of deliberations. Prosecutors plan to put Cosby on trial again. The juror who spoke to the AP questioned the long delay in bringing charges against the TV star, suggesting that “no new evidence from ‘05 to now has showed up, no
stained clothing, no smoking gun, nothing.” In reality, prosecutors reopened the investigation in 2015 after the public release of a deposition that Cosby gave in 2005 and 2006 as part of accuser Andrea Constand’s lawsuit against him—testimony that hadn’t been offered when another district attorney passed on the case in early 2005. Prosecutors used Cosby’s deposition as evidence at the criminal trial. The juror spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive deliberations. Constand, a former Temple University employee, told jurors Cosby gave her pills that made her woozy and then penetrated her with his fingers as she lay paralyzed on a couch, unable to tell him to stop. Cosby has said his encounter with Constand was consensual. Constand, now 44, initially went to police about a year after she said Cosby assaulted her, but a prosecutor declared her case too weak to bring charges.
A decade later, another district attorney revived the probe after excerpts from Cosby’s lurid deposition about drugs and sex became public and dozens of women came forward also alleging sexual assault by him. Cosby was charged shortly before the statute of limitations was set to expire. The juror who spoke to the AP said other jurors expressed the view in the deliberating room that “politics was involved.” “I think they created this whole thing, a case that was settled in ‘05, and we had to bring it up again in ‘17 with no new evidence,” the juror said. The juror declined to reveal whether he wanted to convict or acquit Cosby but left little doubt about how he felt. He said he was suspicious of Constand’s story, questioning why she waited to tell authorities and suggesting the clothing she wore to Cosby’s house had influenced his view of their encounter.
By Lynn Elber Bill Cosby will organize a series of town hall meetings to help educate young people about problems their misbehavior could create and other issues, a spokesman for Cosby said. Cosby is eager to get back to work following a deadlocked jury and mistrial in his sexual assault case, spokesman Andrew Wyatt told Birmingham, Alabama, TV station WBRC on Wednesday. “We’ll talk to young people. Because this is bigger than Bill Cosby. You know, this, this issue can affect any young person, especially young athletes of today,” Wyatt said. “And they need to know what they’re facing when they’re hanging out and partying, when they’re doing certain things they shouldn’t be doing. “And it also affects married men,” Wyatt said, without elaborating. “Is it kind of a, ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ situation?” the newscaster asked, but it was unclear if Wyatt heard and responded to the question. Prosecutors have said Cosby will be retried on sexual assault charges stemming from former Temple University worker Andrea Constand’s allegations that Cosby drugged and molested her in 2004. Cosby contends the encounter was consensual. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, an anti-sexual violence organization known as RAINN, responded to Cosby’s announced plans. “It would be more useful if Mr. Cosby would spend time talking with people about how not to commit sexual assault in the first place,” RAINN spokeswoman Jodi Omear said in a statement. In a statement Thursday to The Associated Press, Wyatt expanded on his remarks. He said that many civic organizations and churches have called asking that Cosby speak to young men and women about the judicial system and how it can be used for “personal agenda and political ambitions.” “They feel that the young men and women need to be aware that Mr. Cosby was given a deal to never be criminally charged” in the Andrea Constand case, he said. A town hall will be held in Birmingham in July, Wyatt said. He didn’t identify the date or location or any other cities that will be visited. Also taking part in the TV interview was Wyatt associate Ebonee Benson, who had read comments from Cosby’s wife, Camille, slamming prosecutors after the trial’s end last weekend in Norristown, Pennsylvania. “Laws are changing,” Benson said on Thursday. “The statute of limitations for victims of sexual assault are being extended. So this is why people need to be educated on a brush against the shoulder, you know anything at this point can be considered sexual assault. And it’s ... a good thing to be educated about the law.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Respectfully submitted by Proponent pursuant to Elections Code §9202. PROPONENT Date: Bill Ivey 516 North Sloan Ave. Compton, CA 90221 Initiative Measure to be Submitted Directly to the Voters The Compton City Attorney has prepared the following ballot title and summary of the chief purposes and points of the proposed initiative measure: Ballot Title AN INITIATIVE MEASURE TO LEGALIZE, REGULATE AND ESTABLISH TAXES ON MEDICAL AND COMMERCIAL MARIJUANA ACTIVITIES AND BUSINESSES (INCLUDING GROWING FACILITIES, STOREFRONT RETAIL LOCATIONS, DELIVERY, PACKAGING, MANUFACTURING OF EDIBLES AND OTHER MARIJUANA PRODUCTS, MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARIES, DISTRIBUTION, AND TESTING) IN THE CITY OF COMPTON Summary of Proposed Measure Medical marijuana dispensaries and uses are currently illegal in the City of Compton. Marijuana cultivation and commercial marijuana businesses of various types are currently illegal in the City of Compton. The City Council voted to make these types of businesses illegal as permitted by State law, the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (“MRCSA”) and the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (“AUMA” or “Proposition 64”). This initiative measure would make various types of medical and commercial marijuana businesses, including growing, legal in specified parts of the City subject to various conditions. Specifically, the initiative proposes to legalize growing of marijuana, processing, manufacturing of marijuana products (such as edibles), testing, medical dispensing, retail sales of marijuana and marijuana products, transporting, delivery, and distributing marijuana and marijuana products for medical and adult use. The initiative calls these uses “Commercial Cannabis Businesses (or Activities).” Proposition 64 permits cities to regulate or prohibit “Commercial Cannabis Businesses.” If the City does not prohibit these uses, they become legal uses in the City once they obtain operating permits from the State. This initiative would permit Commercial Cannabis Activities and commercial marijuana growing to operate in the City in the Limited Commercial, Commercial Manufacturing, Limited Manufacturing and Heavy Manufacturing zones in the City, but not in any area that is zoned exclusively for residential uses. Commercial Cannabis Businesses and growing could not be located within 600 feet of a public or private school, or a public park owned and operated by the City of Compton. Commercial retail cannabis businesses could not be operated within 1000 feet of each other. The initiative would impose numerous health and safety and operational regulations, business and employment practices to be followed by all Commercial Cannabis Business operators, retail businesses, growers, and employees. All Commercial Cannabis Businesses would be required to apply for and be issued permits from the City, as well as any required State licenses or permits. The City would be required to issue permits conditionally if the business has applied for State permits, unless those applications are denied. The initiative provides that violations would be misdemeanors. The initiative would add to the Municipal Code City business license fees on Commercial Cannabis Businesses at a rate not to exceed 5% of Gross receipts, and on Cannabis Cultivation Facilities at a rate not to exceed $10 per square foot, both “as established by ordinance of the City Council.” SchId:68019 CustId:688

SLIDE INTO SUMMER SAFETY
S
FAMILY FEATURES
ummer is a time for playground fun, camping, boating, swimming, biking and other outdoor activities. Longer days mean more time outside and more physical activity, which translates to increased potential for injuries. Playground falls, lawnmower accidents, campfire and fire pit burns are some common childhood injuries that can happen during summer months. “Sustaining a serious injury can be a life-altering event for a child,” said Chris Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children®. “We see patients every day with injuries caused by accidents and we are committed to raising awareness about how to stay safe.” These tips from Shriners Hospitals for Children can help your family enjoy a fun, injury-free summer.
Go Outside and Play
Outdoor play provides physical and mental health benefits, including opportunities for exercise, creative expression, stress reduction and access to a free and natural source of vitamin D – sunlight. Before sending kids out to play, make sure they are wearing shoes to protect their feet from cuts, scrapes and splinters, and wearing sunscreen to protect against sunburns and harmful ultraviolet rays.
Playground 101
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger every year for playground-related injuries. Before your kids head to the playground, keep these precautions in mind: n Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age and offer shock-absorbing surfaces. n Teach children that pushing and shoving on the playground can result in accidents and injuries.
Tips for a fun, safe summer
n Remind kids to go down the slide one at a time and to wait until the slide is completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always sit facing forward with their legs straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst. n Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage them to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings.
Make a Safe Splash
While playing poolside may be a blast, Safe Kids Worldwide reports that drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 1-4 and the third-leading cause of injury-related deaths among those under 19. Additionally, the University of Michigan Health Systems estimate that about 6,000 kids under the age of 14 are hospitalized because of diving injuries each year, with 1 in 5 sustaining a spinal cord injury. Prevent accidents and injuries with these tips to ensure your family’s safety around water: n Instruct children to never swim alone or go near water without an adult present. n Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or near any body of water. n Always jump in feet first to check the depth before diving into any body of water. n Never dive in the shallow end of the pool or into above-ground pools.
Fun on the Water
Boating, tubing and other water sports can be great fun but can also be dangerous. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly 71 percent of all boating fatalities are drownings, 85 percent of which are a result of not wearing a life jacket. Here is what you can do to enjoy the water safely: n Always have children wear a Coast Guardapproved, properly fitted life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports. n Educate yourself. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 86 percent of boating accident deaths

involve boaters who have not completed a safety course. n Always check water conditions and forecasts before going out on the water.
Fire Safety Simplified
According to the CDC, more than 300 children ages 19 and under are treated in emergency rooms for fire- and burn-related injuries each day. Use these tips to help keep children safe around fires, fireworks, grills and other heat sources: n Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit
of placing these items out of the reach of young children. n Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby whenever there is an open flame. n Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if he or she is injured in a fire or by fireworks. n Leave fireworks to the professionals. When the Unexpected Happens
I
t was a beautiful, sunny day when Jordan Nerski headed to the playground with his mother, like millions of other kids on summer vacation. One minute Jordan was climbing on the jungle gym and the next he was on the ground with a broken elbow. Accidents like these are why emergency room doctors and staff refer to the summer months as “trauma season.” During these warm, action-packed months, kids spend more hours active and outdoors, often without adult
supervision, increasing the chance of injury. When these accidents occur, parents want the best care possible for their children. Jordan’s mother Jackie received a recommendation from a friend who suggested that she bring her son to the Shriners Hospital for Children — Portland walk-in fracture clinic. “The experience we had was truly amazing,” Jackie Nerski said. “It was a stressful time since he was in a lot of pain, but everyone from the greeter at check-in to the
doctor made it the best experience.” A simple and streamlined process, Jordan, equipped with an X-ray documenting his break, was checked-in at the fracture clinic, treated and casted in under 2 hours. Jordan returned with his mother for follow-up visits to ensure his elbow was healing properly and they found every visit to be stress-free and informative. “At each visit, every care was taken for his comfort and to answer all my questions to appease my anxiety,” Jackie Nerski said.
“It was an experience that was fantastic; though one I hope we don’t need again, but if we do, we know where to go.” Including the Portland location, there are 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States, Canada and Mexico that provide specialized care to children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Of these 22 hospitals, 13 also offer walk-in fracture clinics.
