Trump Turns Over Ball, Given Chance to Criticize LBJ on His Home Court By Jonathan Lemire

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP)—President Donald Trump insulted NBA star LeBron James from afar but passed up an opportunity to criticize him on his own turf, sticking to Democrats, the news media and other familiar targets during a campaign rally Saturday night in James’ home state of Ohio.

W

hen Trump took the stage in a sweltering high school gymnasium north of Columbus, his late-night tweet deriding James’ intellect had already generated hours of online buzz in defense of the all-star from Akron who had just opened a school for at-risk children in his hometown. Even first lady Melania Trump provided an assist to James, her spokeswoman saying it appeared to the president’s wife that James was “working to do good things on behalf of our next generation” and that Mrs. Trump would be open to visiting his “I Promise” school. The statement didn’t criticize Trump. CNN’s Don Lemon spoke to James at the school and the interview included a negative assessment of the president, whom James said has “kind of used sports to kind of divide us.” Just before midnight Friday, Trump tweeted: “Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!” Among the current and former professional athletes jumping to James’ support in support of James on Saturday was “Mike,” also known as NBA legend Michael Jordan, who said in a statement: “I support LeBron James. He’s doing an amazing job for his community.” James’ publicist declined to respond to Trump’s tweet, but early Saturday afternoon, James retweeted a post from the “I Promise” school and said: “Let’s get it kids!! Love you guys.” Trump rarely allows a slight to pass unanswered, but James appeared off limits by the time the president crossed the Ohio border to campaign for state Sen. Troy Balderson, the Republican in a special U.S. House election on Tuesday. His opponent, Democrat Danny O’Connor, tweeted, “I don’t have to tell (asterisk) anyone (asterisk) what LeBron James means to Ohio.” In remarks lasting more than an hour, Trump assailed many other critics while arguing that Republicans needed to control Congress and casting the midterms as a referendum on himself. He defiantly questioned the idea that, historically, the party that controls the White House suffers in the midterms, declaring “but I say why?” Ohio Gov. Josh Kasich, a Republican who at times criticizes Trump, tweeted: “Rather than criticizing @KingJames, we should be celebrating him

NEWS California State University, Dominguez Hills Earns Maximum 10-Year Re-Accreditation

CARSON—California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has had its accreditation reaffirmed for a maximum 10-year term by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior Commission for Universities and Colleges (WSCUC), the regional accrediting agency responsible for certifying higher education institutions in California, Hawaii, and the Pacific. “Accreditation confirms CSUDH’s commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence,” said CSUDH President, Thomas A. Parham. “To receive WSCUC’s full, 10-year accreditation is further testament to the

outstanding work everyone on this campus does on a daily basis to ensure our students receive the very best academic and co-curricular experience.” The WASC accreditation process aids institutions in developing institutional structures, processes, and resources that sustain effective educational programs. WSCUC encourages continuous improvement and assures constituencies, including the public, that accredited institutions are fulfilling their missions. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, WSCUC accreditation certifies institutional eligibility for federal funding in a number of programs,

including student access to federal financial aid. In a letter formalizing the action, WSCUC highlighted CSUDH’s approach to supporting student success and achievement, and the resulting gains in retention and graduation rates. WSCUC also commended the university for its strong sense of community among students and faculty, and its ‘pervasive entrepreneurial spirit,’ which is reflected in a strong, optimistic outlook about its future. Former CSUDH President Willie J. Hagan received special recognition for developing a clear vision and path forward for the school. The commission recommend-

ed that CSUDH continue to build on its efforts to strengthen assessment of evidence-based curricular and co-curricular program student outcomes, faculty hiring, and physical campus development. Overall, the school was ‘encouraged to continue its progress, particularly in respect to student learning and success.’ CSUDH’s 10-year re-accreditation from WSCUC represents a major accomplishment and completes a lengthy multi-year process that involved the review of data, processes, and outcomes across the entire university, as well as an in-depth evaluation of important university priorities.

Enough with the Racism in the Rooftop Solar Industry By Julianne Malveaux

Recently, news came out that the electronics retailer Best Buy decided to reconsider their partnership with a company called Vivint. The partnership allowed Vivint employees to work inside Best Buy stores and to sell Best Buy customers products capable of reducing their home’s energy usage.

The potential decision by Best Buy is apparently just business, but it is a welcome piece of news, because Vivint seemingly has a problem with African Americans. Vivint isn’t alone when it comes to struggling with race. There has always been bigotry in this country. In 2018, thanks to the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, who risked their lives fighting for equality and justice, things are much improved. But these days, some racists in this country are feeling encouraged to express their ugly views in public or discriminate against people of color. Recently, Vivint Solar—one of the largest sellers of solar panels in this country—was sued in California by a Black employee who alleges that his superiors likened him to a monkey; used a racial epithet against him; and that his coworkers used cardboard boxes to build a fort around their desks that was marked as “White only.” The complainant’s lawyer provided pictures of this absurd and abhorrent cardboard façade to the media and The Sacramento Bee published the photo. David Bywater, the top executive at Vivint Solar, told the media that he was “deeply disturbed” by these allegations. “I want to firmly state that Vivint Solar has a zero-tolerance policy for racial discrimination and harassment in the workplace,” Bywater said. “Our company is built on the strength of diversity.” This is precisely what a CEO is supposed to say, but a person of conscience would back their words up with action. A deeper dive into Vivint’s practices makes me question Bywater’s sincerity. In March, Hector Balderas, the Attorney Gen-

Amazon Must Stop Selling Hate By Barbara Arnwine Amazon claims to be a company that values inclusion and diversity, but a recent report reveals that this façade masks a darker side, as the company profits from selling White supremacist and other hateful products. Progressive lawmakers in Georgia, where earlier this year conservative lawmakers punished Delta for cutting ties with the N.R.A., should take a stand of their own by punishing Amazon for promoting hatred and bigotry. The report, jointly published by the Partnership for Working Families and Action Center on Race & the Economy, details the startlingly vast array of White supremacist products and goods available on the Amazon marketplace. This includes everything from costumes featuring lynching imagery to burning-cross onesies and Nazi swastika pendants. It begs the question: is Amazon failing miserably to police its platform or is the tech giant willfully overlooking the sale of bigoted products? Georgia communities in particular should be aware of the hate-mongering taking place on the Amazon marketplace. One of the prominent products cited in the report and still available for purchase on Amazon is an “old” Georgia state flag featuring Confederate imagery alongside the state of Georgia seal. Just a half-century removed from the struggle for equality, this is an affront on the hard-fought battles of Georgia civil rights leaders like Representative John Lewis. But the marketplace is not the only Amazon platform that has seen White supremacist offerings. Amazon Kindle, which controls nearly 83 percent of the online book market, was found to offer 226 books from publishers that the Southern Poverty Law Center identified as hate organizations. With such a

dominant market share, Amazon is failing its responsibility to keep our communities safe from this type of bigotry and hate speech. This is not the first time that Amazon has been found profiting from these appalling business practices. Earlier this year, the company was caught selling apparel and other items emblazoned with the phrase “Slavery Gets Sh*t Done,” which included children’s T-shirts and bibs. Only after human rights organizations such as Anti-Slavery International condemned the company did Amazon pull them from their online shelves. Meanwhile, the tech giant’s German marketplace was revealed to be offering modified Lego-style Nazi German soldiers for purchase. The toys were reportedly being marketed to children as young as seven years old, sparking an online petition and groundswell of opposition protesting their sale. Since Amazon clearly has a long and alarming history of allowing hatred on its platforms, it is time that Georgia lawmakers take swift action to protect communities of color and other minorities. Beyond denouncing this clear violation of ethical conduct, lawmakers should consider whether it is time to introduce regulations that force Amazon to reject profiting from the sale of products that promote hate. Civil rights leaders have bravely fought for decades to keep burning crosses and other symbols of bigotry off the lawns of Georgia communities. Now they must prevent Amazon from allowing them to be delivered to the front door. Civil rights leader Barbara Arnwine is the founder and president of the Transformative Justice Coalition and a lecturer at Columbia Law School. She served as the executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law from 1989 until 2015.

eral of New Mexico filed a against Vivint Solar, accusing them of fraud, racketeering, and unfair business practices. Balderas says the company, which sells rooftop solar panels employed “high-pressure sales techniques and procedures designed to mislead consumers” and lock their customers into contracts lasting 20 years, with rates that increase “by over 72 percent,” as the agreement matures. Also, according to the Balderas’ office: “The complaint also charges Vivint with filing improper notices in consumer real estate records that operate to cloud titles, in some cases, making it difficult for New Mexico consumers to sell their homes.” There is also some evidence that consumers of color and low-income consumers are targeted for these pressure tactics. Vivint Solar is connected to Vivint Home Security, a company that also has had its run-ins with the law. Last year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxson reached a settlement with the company for allegations the company violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. This, combined with the action by the New Mexico Attorney General, paints a picture of a company that is not treating customers fairly. I’ve been interested in the solar industry, because it is an expanding industry that increasingly provides new opportunities. However, there also seems to be additional opportunities to exploit consumers, especially minority consumers. I’ve written about my concerns about the ways the industry targets less sophisticated consumers, echoing concerns raised by several members of Congress in a letter to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in early 2017. In response to my concerns, the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) used a consultant to harass me and my staff. I received and accepted an apology from the CEO of SEIA. I hoped they were sincere in their stated concerns about consumer protection and also about diversity in their industry. But Vivint Solar, with its “White only” fort, is a member of SEIA. The allegations of racial discrimination and harassment involving Vivint Solar seem inconsistent with SEIA’s stated values. What must they do? I have some ideas: First, SEIA should ask Vivint Solar to leave their trade association. If SEIA wants to represent rooftop solar makers that respect consumers and employees, then Vivint Solar needs to go. If SEIA doesn’t take action against Vivint Solar, there is no accountability, which only further erodes trust with minority communities. Further, SEIA should back up their statement, that CEO Abby Hopper has established diversity of solar’s workforce and customer base as among her top three priorities. SEIA should also work to increase awareness about their “Diversity Best Practices Guide” by funding and hosting consumer education seminars around the country to better inform consumers, especially minority consumers, about their rights when it comes to the rooftop solar industry. I have always been excited about the ways solar energy can reduce our dependence on fossil fuel, as a power source. But the solar energy movement is crippled when companies like Vivint Solar both take advantage of customers and discriminate against minorities. It’s not enough to have a “Diversity Best Practices Guide.” SEIA needs to let best practices be their guide in their dealings with Vivint Solar. Silence is complicity. It is time for good people to stand up against racism. Best Buy, SEIA: What say you? Julianne Malveaux is an author, economist and founder of Economic Education. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? OPED On July 16, 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson was shot and killed in front of her Washington, D.C. home trying to buy ice cream. Makiyah was a rising fifth grader who loved basketball, football, art, and puzzles. She had just opened her front door on her way to the ice cream truck in the courtyard when four young men pulled up in a car and started shooting into a crowd of people enjoying the summer evening. Four people, including Makiyah’s 18-year-old sister, were injured and Makiyah was hit in the chest. Neighbors watched helplessly as her mother screamed and prayed over her dying child still holding the five-dollar bill she’d been given to buy a treat.

By Marian Wright Edelman

A

n ice cream truck sat outside the church during Makiyah’s funeral as a stark reminder of the childhood innocence and joy shattered by the shooting. Between 2007 and 2016, 156 children and teens were killed by guns in Washington, D.C. compared to two local law enforcement officers killed by guns in the line of duty during that same 10-year period. The Washington Post noted that the day before Makiyah’s murder a 12-year-old boy was shot and injured in the District. On July 4th 11-year-old Ashley Prentice, who once attended the same school as Makiyah, was hit by gunfire during a holiday cookout. She told a reporter, “I was sad because I was like, why me? I always get good grades in school. I’m just a good girl. And I’m like, why me?” Then she heard about Makiyah: “I felt really sad about how her parents could feel because if that was me, I could have been the one dead.” Makiyah’s friends and family are far from alone. In 2016, 3,128 children and teens were killed by guns in America – more than 8 every day. There were 221 gun victims 10 years old and younger. Another 17,155 children and teens were injured with a gun leaving physical and emotional scars that often last a lifetime. This pervasive everyday gun violence kills children like seven-year-old Taylor Hayes, who died in Baltimore on July 19 two weeks after being shot in the back while riding in the back seat of a car. Taylor reportedly loved reading, dancing, singing and games like Go Fish. It injures children like a nine-year-old girl in Chattanooga, Tennessee left in critical condition on July 22 after being hit in the stomach by a stray bullet during an argument between adults. Pervasive gun violence terrorizes millions of children forced to go about their everyday lives in neighborhoods where it is a common threat. When six-year-old Florida first grader King Carter was killed by gunfire in 2016 on his way to buy candy, more than 100 children and teenagers had been killed by guns in his county, Miami-Dade, in the previous three years. At King’s funeral family members and friends decorated the church with football goalposts and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures. Black children and teens are disproportionately affected by gun violence. In 2016, 43 percent of gun deaths were among Black children and teens although they were only 14 percent of all children and teens. That year 1,335 Black children and teens were killed

by guns. The gun death rate for Black children and teens was nearly four times that for White children and teens and more than eight times that for Asian and Pacific Islander children and teens. Between 1963 and 2016, 65,947 Black children and teens were killed by guns — more than 16 times the recorded lynchings of Black people of all ages in the 74 years from 1877 to 1950. An Urban Institute report points out “exposure to gun violence has been linked to a variety of psychological challenges like anger and dissociation, anxiety and depression, and posttraumatic stress dis-

New National Poll Finds Consumers Still Want Financial Regulation By Charlene Crowell A decade ago, the entire nation suffered through a financial crisis that led to the brink of a global financial collapse. While Wall Street reckoned with its risky practices, America’s families suffered lost wealth of nearly $2 trillion, half of it coming from communities of color who were targeted for high-cost and unsustainable mortgages. Now a new poll finds that even with the passage of a decade, consumers still support financial regulation and related enforcement. Moreover, when it comes to payday and car-title lending, consumer scorn has grown even stronger over the past year for these small-dollar, debt trap loans that come with triple-digit interest rates. The 2018 poll, conducted by Lake Research Partners and Chesapeake Beach Consulting, found that among respondents more than 90 percent viewed regulation of financial services to be very important, and registered support across partisan affiliations. Among Republicans, 85 percent supported regulation, compared to 92 percent of independents and 96 percent of Democrats. Further, a growth in the number of consumers supporting a rule to hold payday lenders accountable increased six percentage points in just the past year. Believing that payday lenders prey upon those who have the fewest financial resources – low-wage earners, working families, and elder Americans, 79 percent of sur-

When asked about the lack of enforcement against abuses by payday lenders, 81 percent were concerned about

New STEM Library Corner Launched at the Compton Library Funded by Edison and executed by PBS SoCal

Judge Reaffirms Ruling That DACA Must Resume WASHINGTON (AP)—A federal judge has reaffirmed his ruling that the Trump administration must resume a program that has shielded hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. The ruling has no immediate effect because U.S. District Judge John D. Bates in Washington gave the administration 20 days to decide if it wants to appeal and ask that it be put on hold while trying to get it overturned. In April, the judge gave the government 90 days to restate its argument to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. In a 25-page ruling on Friday, he said the administration failed to change his mind. Two nationwide injunctions earlier this year applied only to renewal requests for DACA recipients, commonly referred to as “Dreamers.” The Washington case also covers first-time applicants.

Photo courtesy PBS SoCal Photo courtesy PBS SoCal LOS ANGELES—PBS SoCal recently received a $30,000 grant from Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, to create a STEM Library Corner at the Compton Library. The Library Corner will become an educational hub for the community, providing iPads loaded with educational apps, as well as monthly educational services including family coding workshops and bilingual Parent Academies. The STEM Library Corner was launched on July 26, during a ceremony at the Compton Library.

“Through our early childhood education work, we fulfill a critical need for early learning resources to serve the more than 40 percent of Southern California children that don’t attend preschool,” said Jamie Myers, PBS SoCal COO & Vice President, Education & Community Engagement. “Compton is a priority community for these services, so we are grateful to Edison International for helping us create this important dedicated STEM Library Corner at the Compton Library, where we will work with area parents and children to provide gradeappropriate STEM concepts

and access to critical learning resources.” The grant from Edison International will make possible a donation of ten iPads with cases, and a rolling case for use at the Library Corner. Each iPad will be loaded with U.S. Department of Education approved PBS Kids apps recognized to improve literacy and numeracy. A PBS SoCal Education staff member will visit the library monthly to provide additional support to those using the lab. The grant also provides supplies like STEM tool kits, invention kits, and bilingual worksheets for families and children.

NC’s Blue Cross Cutting ‘Obamacare’ Prices Despite Changes By Emery P. Dalesio RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—North Carolina’s largest health insurer said Tuesday it’s cutting some individual premiums for the first time in over a quarter century, but next year’s savings on subsidized “Obamacare” coverage would have been much larger if Washington had left the law alone. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina said it proposed prices to state insurance regulators that could lower rates for next year’s Affordable Care Act policies by 4.1 percent on average. North Carolina has one of the country’s highest enrollment levels in ACA policies and Blue Cross has more than 475,000 customers in the plans offered in all 100 counties. “I’m not aware of any plan of our size, almost 500,000 members, with this amount of decrease,” Chief Executive Officer Patrick Conway said in an interview. Despite President Donald Trump’s efforts to repeal “Obamacare,” enrollment has stabilized nationally at about 10 million

people. After two years of stiff premium hikes, many insurers are making money again. There seems to be little risk of insurers fleeing HealthCare.gov in 2019 as some did in the past. The accounting pluses and minuses that added up to the proposed cut in ACA policy premiums for 2019 came from many factors, but Conway said a big reason was a $120 million reduction in health care costs from newly negotiated deals with doctors and hospitals. “We are now jointly accountable for the quality and total cost of care,” Conway said. Blue Cross could have lowered average rates by another 18 percent if Congress and the Trump Administration hadn’t eliminated the penalty for people who don’t buy health coverage and a subsidy to insurers, the company said. Blue Cross has been the only insurer offering the subsidized coverage in all 100 North Carolina counties. About 90 percent of the insurer’s customers with ACA plans qualified for subsidies that helped them afford health insurance coverage.

MAN KILLED IN COMPTON SHOOTING PUBLICLY IDENTIFIED

COMPTON—The coroner’s office released the name of a man shot to death in Compton, as detectives searched for the person or persons responsible. The victim was Marcus Kerr, 29, of Compton, said Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. Deputies responded at 8:20 p.m. Friday to a shots fired call in the 100 block of East Cypress Street and learned that a gunshot victim was located on the corner of Willowbrook Avenue and Cocoa Street, according to Deputy Trina Schrader with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Detectives believed the shooting was near East Cypress Street, she said. The victim now identified as Kerr suffered at least one gunshot wound to the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, Schrader said. A description of the suspect or a motive for the shooting was not available, she said.

‘HOODIE BANDIT’ SOUGHT FOR COMPTON ARMED ROBBERY

COMPTON—Authorities circulated security images of the “Hoodie Bandit,” who is being sought for the armed robbery of a Compton convenience store, during which he uncovered his face while demanding money from employees. The crime occurred about 1:20 p.m. July 21 at an am/pm store at an Arco gas station in the 2800 block of Alondra Boulevard, the sheriff’s department reported. The suspect was described as Black, in his late 20s, 6 feet tall and weighing 140 pounds. He had a beard, black hair, and black eyes. He

was armed with a handgun. “The suspect entered the store with customers inside brandished a weapon demanding money from the cash register,” a sheriff’s statement said. “The cashiers did not understand what was being said because the suspect’s mouth was covered with his hoodie sweatshirt,” the statement said. “The suspect removed the hoodie from his mouth exposing his face and again brandishing the handgun demanded money stating, ‘I’ll put a bullet in your face.”’ The man obtained money from the register and drove off in a newer- model silver SUV, possibly an Infiniti or Audi with black rims. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call (310) 605-6506, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.

NEWS Josephine Baker Documentary Headlines African Diaspora Film Festival in Washington DC By Stacy M. Brown

“Streetlight Harmonies,” by Brent Wilson and the documentary “Josephine Baker: Black Diva in a White Man’s World,” count among the highlights of the 12th annual African Diaspora International Film Festival which opens on Friday, August 17 at the Marvin Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

T

he three-day festival, which presents films to diverse audiences and redesigns the Black cinema experience by

strengthening the role of African and African descent directors in contemporary world cinema, will feature 16 films that will take audiences in

and out of the United States, including eight that will have their premieres in the nation’s capital. “There’s a lot new this year,” said Reinaldo BarrosoSpech, an educator in foreign languages and Black literature who created the festival with his wife, Diarah N’Daw-Spech, a financial consultant and university budget manager. The opening night film, “Timeless,” by Ed LaBorde counts as a love story that transcends time from 19th century Ghana to the modern

day Caribbean. Some of the social issues explored in the film are the human trafficking of the slave trade in the past and the present day human trafficking in the Virgin Islands, as well as political corruption and immigration. Festival organizers also plan to present the premiere screening of the awardwinning drama, “The Citizen,” a narrative a b o u t middlea g e d African political refugee (Wils o n ) w h o seeks Hungarian citizenship. The film has already earned acclaimed from critics at The New York Times and other publications. Organizers have also expressed excitement about “Streetlight Harmonies,” a film about doo-wop featuring a who’s who of musicians that trace the evolution of pop music from doo-wop and Phil Spector’s legendary “wall of sound” through Motown, surf music and the British Invasion. The festival also includes

a special program where films depict the lives of a na-

Two other films directed by women explore issues of identity in diaspora communities in the United States. “The Good Life—or La Belle Vie—by Rachelle Salnave reflects on the cultural crossfire she experienced as a HaitianAmerican growing up in Har-

driving. States that joined the lawsuit said the change would end up costing more money at the pump because vehicles won’t go as far on a gallon of gas, and more misery for those suffering pollution-exacerbated maladies such as asthma. “This has to be absolutely one of the most harmful and dumbest actions that the EPA has taken,” Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said. “It’s going to cost drivers here and across the country hundreds of millions of dollars more at the pump.”

Pollution from cars, trucks and other on-road vehicles is the California’s single-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, according to state data. California has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. It met its 2020 goals four years early, but hitting the next target will be much harder without cleaner vehicles. The state has struggled to rein in vehicle pollution. Transportation is the only sector where greenhouse gas emissions went up in 2016, the most recent data available. The lawsuit filed in May in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia alleged the plan to dump the mileage standards violated the federal Clean Air Act and didn’t follow the agency’s own regulations. The lawsuit is proceeding, and Becerra said lawyers will now pore over the documents filed with the proposal to help make their case. Other states that joined in the lawsuit were: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia. All have Democratic attorneys general.

Levi’s, Yelp Join Coalition Pledging to Not Discriminate By Dee-Ann Durbin

Levi Strauss, Yelp and Lyft are leading a coalition of 1,200 businesses and cities that are pledging not to discriminate against employees or customers based on race, sexual orientation, or other characteristics.

N

ormally, making a promise to serve every customer might seem like a nobrainer. But the Open to All coalition is launching in a highly charged atmosphere, with florists refusing to provide flowers for gay weddings and stores turning away Muslim customers. On the same June weekend that White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was asked to leave a Virginia restaurant because of her affiliation with President Donald Trump, a transgender woman was harassed by staff at a Washington restaurant for using the women’s restroom. So it remains to be seen if the “Open to All” message—on businesses’ Yelp pages or on stickers in their windows—will calm frayed tempers or anger customers and businesses who might question its motives. Tia Agnew, co-founder and CEO of New Day Craft, an Indianapolis-based producer of mead and cider, is excited to put up her “Open to All” window sticker, which she says matches her “personal and professional ethos.” She’s not worried that it will be a turn-off to some potential patrons. “All I can do is put our best foot forward and say, ‘Hey, come on in and hang out,”’ she said. But George Marinakos, the owner of The Exchange Saloon in Washington, isn’t sold on the idea. His bar is near the White House, and he has served Sanders as well as members of the Obama administration. A chalkboard in front of the bar reads, “Everyone welcome,” but he thinks an “Open to All” sticker might raise questions. If he doesn’t put it up, some people will wonder why; if he does, some people might not feel welcome because of what they interpret as a leftleaning message. “You’re putting yourself in the position of being damned if you do or damned if you don’t,” he said. The Open to All coalition got its start late last year as the U.S. Supreme Court was preparing to consider the case of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple because it violated his religious beliefs. The court ultimately ruled for the baker but didn’t give businesses a blanket right to discriminate against gays. LeBron James to Executive Produce Showtime Documentary Series on NBA Players BEVERLY HILLS—LeBron James will be among the executive producers of a three-part documentary series on the changing role of athletes, focusing on NBA players, scheduled to premiere on Showtime in October. “Shut Up and Dribble” chronicles the modern history of the NBA and its players, starting with the 1976 merger with the American Basketball Association. The NBA’s popularity burgeoned after Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Larry Bird entered the league in 1979, leading players to become leaders in commerce and fashion and cultural icons and making statements in the current political climate. The title stems from a remark by conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham in response to a comment by James in February about Golden State Warriors players declining an invitation to the White House. The series will be directed by Gotham Chopra, who directed the 2015 Showtime documentary “Kobe Bryant’s Muse” and the Facebook Watch documentary series on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, “Tom vs Time,” released earlier this year. The executive producers also include Maverick Carter, James’ business manager. “If being a star athlete is inherently a

political experience, ‘Shut Up and Dribble,” tells that complex and dramatic story from the past to the present and from the inside out,” Showtime Networks Inc. President and CEO David Nevins said. “LeBron James is one of many competitors whose place in the spotlight has led not to silence but perspective, and he, Maverick Carter and Gotham Chopra have given us an important, insightful docuseries that should bring their fans and fellow citizens to a higher level of discourse, rather than the dismissal satirized in the title.” The announcement was made Monday at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour which is being held in Beverly Hills.

the government. Uber, for example, includes sexual orientation, gender identity and marital status in its nondiscrimination policy. It dumped a Houston driver from its platform earlier this year after the driver made a gay couple get out of his car. “Business really is in a unique place to lead right now,” Rongerude said. But not every business contacted by Open to All plans to join the coalition. Target Corp., for example, said it won’t join because it has a policy prohibiting third-party signs on its doors. Participants in the coalition risk turning off some customers. Mark McLean, a retired business owner and conservative blogger in Tennessee, says “Open to All” signs are divisive. He likens them to “GunFree Establishment” signs that infringe on gun owners’ rights. “We can’t govern how people think. That’s a dangerous slope to go down,” McLean said. But Jacinta Gauda, principal and chief strategy officer at The Gauda Group, who counsels companies about diversity and inclusion, says businesses are also facing pressure from employees and customers to take a stand on issues and make their values clear. “I’m just of the mind that the movement to do this, driven by their employees and customers, is larger than the political risk,” she said. “They calculated this and said, ‘We have more to gain than we have to lose.”

New FX Series Chance to Tell Latino Stories from Inside Out. By Beth Harris BEVERLY HILLS (AP)—The cocreator of a new series featuring Latino characters who are violent criminals is at its core about a family, albeit a damaged one that lives outside the parameters of normal society. Kurt Sutter told a TV critics meeting on Friday that he’s “really proud to have a brown cast” in “Mayans M.C.,” which debuts Sept. 4 on FX. At the time same, Sutter said he doesn’t bow to outside pressure that many of the Latino characters are criminals. “The stories that I like to tell and the characters I like to create are damaged,” he said. “I never write these guys or these women from the point of view of them being dangerous or bad. I write them from the idea that they’re human beings with complex feelings.” The show picks up 21/2 years after the events of Sutter’s “Sons of Anarchy” and focuses on that series’ rivalsturned-allies, the Mayans Motorcycle Club. “People didn’t show up for ‘Sons’ because it was about (expletive) outlaws,” Sutter said. “It was about a (expletive) family.” Co-creator Elgin James said he grew up in a world of gangs and violence, and he sees the show as a chance

to tell Latino stories from personal experience. “I don’t know what it’s like to grow up in a functional family, I don’t know what it’s like to grow up in a supportive family,” James said. “But I do know that I have these stories that I have to tell and this damage inside me that I have to get out.” James noted that many of the people working in front of and behind the camera on the show grew up in poverty amid violence and incarceration. “This is the first time we get to tell our own stories from the inside out, which is incredibly important to me,” he said. “I don’t want any nice people ... to tell me I can’t tell my story.” Among the cast is Edward James Olmos, Danny Pino, JD Pardo, and Emilio Rivera, who was in “Sons of Anarchy.” Olmos starred in the PBS series “American Family” that ran from 2002-04 and was the first broadcast TV drama featuring a mostly Latino cast. “We’re more than 22 percent of the population and less than 4 percent of the images on screen,” he said. “This show is going to move the needle. It’s about time. This next whole evolvement that we’re going through right now will be one to remember. Everyone is going to see this show and have an opinion.”

Calling 911: Actresses Bassett, Hinds Helped by Responders

BEVERLY HILLS (AP)—Angela Bassett once resorted to dialing 911 for help when she had trouble with a fireplace at home. Aisha Hinds needed help for a life-threatening emergency as a teenager. The actresses co-star on Fox’s “9-1-1” series about the pressurized world of police, firefighters and dispatchers who are thrust into a variety of high-stress situations. Bassett told a TV critics meeting last Thursday that she once called for help when a fire she and a friend started got
