COMPTON—Cal State LA alumna Dr. Leana Wen has been named president of Planned Parenthood, one of the nation’s largest providers of health care and reproductive services to low-income women. Wen, 35, graduated summa cum laude from Cal State LA when she was only 18. She was a product of the university’s Early Entrance Program, which allows exceptionally gifted students as young as 11 to enroll as full-time students. Wen was admitted when she was 13 and earned her B.S. in biochemistry. She exemplifies the potential and promise of many young students who enroll at Cal State LA through the Early Entrance Program, said Honors College director Trinh Pham. The program is housed in the Honors College and graduates about 20 students each year. “What really stands out about the students is how remarkably brilliant they are—especially considering their ages—and the sense of community and connections they make while they’re here,” Pham said. Most are coming directly from middle school to college and thrive in the company of classmates who challenge and support them. “The students are extremely motivated and driven, and very passionate about learning,” Pham said. Wen has credited her Cal State LA professors and mentors with exposing her to new ways of thinking about the world. “I feel strongly that I received an excellent, diverse education from Cal State LA,” she said in a 2009 interview with the university magazine. After graduation, Wen attended medical school at Washington University, trained at Massachusetts General Hospital as a Harvard Medical School Clinical Fellow, and studied public health at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.

(Dr.Wen’s family) settled in Compton, where her family had to confront what she describes as “the challenges of seeking healthcare with limited resources.” She currently serves as Health Commissioner for the city of Baltimore, where she’s been hailed as a strong advocate for expanding access to health services in vulnerable neighborhoods. Before taking that post in 2015, she was a university professor, author and emergency room physician. A native of Shanghai, Wen was almost 8 years old when her parents, Chinese dissidents, immigrated to the U.S. and were granted political asylum. They settled in Compton, where her family had to confront what she describes as “the challenges of seeking healthcare with limited resources.” As a child, Wen was chronically ill with asthma. She, her younger sister and her mother all “depended on Planned Parenthood for medical care at various times,” she said in a statement announcing her new position. Wen will step into her new role on Nov. 12. She will be Planned Parenthood’s sixth president—and only the second physician to lead the organization in its 102-year history.

The overall purpose of the event is to focus on providing Compton youth, young adults, and foster youth with an opportunity to showcase their talent, compete for prizes and speak directly with local agents, recruiters, and employers and to expose them to local educational and employment opportunities. The resource fair and luncheon provide our young adults, families, and entrepreneurs a chance to network and meet with business owners and community leaders in an informal environment. Director Denise Blasor is the Associate Artistic Director at Bilingual Foundation of the Arts and founding member of LAAFO and KOAN at the Odyssey Theater and East LA Classic Theater. She says “Ghosts... is a play about what we as human beings do in order to survive. It’s a poetic piece about love and what a mother will do to protect her children.” Playwright Hilary Bettis is the granddaughter of a Mexican immigrant and is familiar with the

struggles of living in oppressive environments and the culture behind border cities. Through this story Bettis gives voice to thousands of women and shows their courage, fight and strength. “Women haven’t survived for eons by being “weak” and “emotional.” We’ve survived by being a hell of a lot tougher and braver than we’re given credit for, and I wanted to show that through Raquel’s journey in this play.” California Repertory Company is celebrating 30 years of risk-taking theatre. NEWS Oprah Winfrey Thanks First Responders at Stamp Ceremony SAN LUIS OBISPO (AP)— A new commemorative stamp from the U.S. Postal Service honors first responders across the country, including firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel who assisted during a wildfire and a deadly mudslide in the Montecito, California, area. KSBY-TV reports that media giant and Montecito resident Oprah Winfrey gave local first responders a personal thanks during a Friday stamp ceremony. The stamp depicts a firefighter, paramedic and police officer in red, white and blue. Winfrey described the first responders who worked during the Thomas Fire and the Jan. 9 mudslide as brave and undaunted. Teen Lauren Cantin, who was rescued from mud by first responders, sang “God Bless America” at the ceremony. Her father and brother were killed in the mudslide.

Immigrant Rights Groups Sue Feds in LA Over Backlog

LOS ANGELES—Immigrant rights groups filed suit Monday in Los Angeles against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services over an allegedly intentional slowdown by the Trump administration in the processing of naturalization applications. The lawsuit, filed in federal court by groups including the National Partnership for New Americans, stems from the citizenship agency’s alleged failure to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request on Aug. 6 to produce documents related to the backlog of citizenship applications. A USCIS representative said that as a matter of policy, the agency is unable to comment on matters involving specific litigation. However, USCIS spokesman Michael Bars said in a statement that generally, the agency “continues to adjudicate the pending caseload which skyrocketed under the Obama administration.” NPNA filed the FOIA request seeking to uncover alleged “racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination” by USCIS leadership, according to the complaint, which also alleges an intentional slowdown in processing in order to limit the number of new voters t o n a who might vote against s i “It the current administral tion. very wel Although the aged camoufl er processing of apt o v f plications and backo form ground checks are .” sion fully funded by the $725 suppres fee paid by the applicant, USCIS has refused to allocate additional resources for the timely and professional processing of those applications, the rights groups contend. The result is that the naturalization backlog has skyrocketed to 753,000 applications nationally, a 93 percent increase over what the backlog was as recently as late 2015, the NPNA alleges. Among that alleged backlog are 17,570 applications from Los Angeles County and 16,614 applications from the city of Los Angeles as of the end of March. Bars countered that USCIS is currently “on pace to complete at least 829,000 N-400 naturalization applications in Fiscal Year 2018, potentially exceeding a 5-year high in the number of applications processed. This is a testament to the diligence, training, and expertise of adjudicators and agency staff stationed at our offices around the country.” Peter Schey, president of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law and legal counsel for the FOIA requesting parties, alleged that the Trump administration’s “policy of creating unnecessary obstacles to long-term resident immigrants naturalizing and becoming United States citizens is irrational, illegal and unconscionable.” “It is a not very well-camouflaged form of voter suppression,” he said. “The internal documents we are now seeking under the Freedom of Information Act will shed light on this illegal covert program and allow us to assess how litigation may be used to end the administration’s voter suppression program. Immigrants should be encouraged, not actively discouraged, to become citizens and play a more active role in the civic life of society.” At the current rate of processing applications, it would take USCIS more than 25 years to get the current rate down to the Obama administration’s backlog level of n BACKLOG, see page 8

U.S. Slashes Number of Refugees to 30,000 for Next Year

WASHINGTON (AP)—The U.S. will slash the number of refugees it will accept for a second straight year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday, insisting amid criticism from human rights groups that the country is still committed to providing sanctuary to people fleeing the world’s danger zones.

U

p to 30,000 refugees will be allowed into the country next year, down from a cap of 45,000 this year. It will be the lowest ceiling on admissions since the program began in 1980. The announcement comes despite calls from global humanitarian groups that this year’s cap of 45,000 was too low. Pompeo sought to head off potential criticism of the reduction by noting that the U.S. would process more than 280,000 asylum claims in addition to more than 800,000 already inside the country who are awaiting a resolution of their claims. “These expansive figures continue the United States’ long-standing record as the most generous nation in the world when it comes to protection-based immigration and assistance,” he said. The 30,000 cap is the maximum number of refugees the U.S. will admit during the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1. The actual number allowed in could be lower. So far this year, the U.S. has only admitted 20,918 refugees for the fiscal year set to end in two weeks, according to State Department records. President Barack Obama raised the ceiling to 110,000 in 2017, but the pace slowed dramatically after President Donald Trump took office and issued an executive order addressing refugees.

In 2016, the last full year of the Obama administration, the U.S. welcomed nearly 85,000 refugees. Pompeo said the lower ceiling reflected commitment to aiding families forced to flee their homes by war, persecution or natural disasters while “prioritizing the safety and well-being of the American people.” He cited the case of an Iraqi refugee who was arrested in California for killing a policeman in his homeland while fighting for the Islamic State organization. “This year’s proposed refugee ceiling must be considered in the context of the many other forms of protection and assistance offered by the United States,” he said, citing U.S. contributions to foreign aid and other forms of humanitarian assistance. Amnesty International accused the Trump administration of “abandon-

displaced within their home countries. Most aid groups and governments advocate resettlement as a last resort, preferring to allow refugees to return to their homes if conditions improve, rather than permanently moving to another country. During the ceiling announcement Monday Pompeo advocated U.S. efforts “to end conflicts that drive displacement in the first place and to target the application of foreign aid in a smarter way.” Trump has made limiting immigration a centerpiece of his policy agenda. The Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy that forcibly separated families at the U.S. southern border sparked outrage among Republicans and Democrats alike. Last year Trump temporarily banned visitors from a handful of Muslim-majority nations, and insists he’ll build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump has linked increased immigration to increased crime in the United States. Yet, according to resettlement agencies in the United States, the U.S. vetting process is one of the world’s toughest. Of the 3 million refugees admitted to the U.S. since 1975, not one has been arrested for carrying out a lethal terror attack on U.S. soil, according to resettlement agencies. Most applicants to the U.S. refugee program spend at least three years being interviewed, undergoing biometric checks and medical exams, and filling out paperwork. Cases are screened by the Defense Department, FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies. After they are resettled, refugees continue to undergo security checks in the United States for five years or more. The Trump administration added requirements, including longer background checks and more screenings for females and males between 14 and 50 from certain countries, including Iraq.

“This is the lowest goal in the history of the program, and compounded by this administration’s history of creating road block after road block.”

Ryan Mace, Amnesty International ing” refugees with the lower cap. “This is the lowest goal in the history of the program, and compounded by this administration’s history of creating road block after road block for refugees to arrive, this must be perceived as an all-out attack against our country’s ability to resettle refugees both now and in the future,” said Ryan Mace of Amnesty International. Worldwide, there were some 25.4 million refugees last year, according to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, with many more people internally

McDonald Workers in L.A., 9 Other Cities Strike Over Sexual Harassment Claims

LONG BEACH—California Repertory Company begins its 2018-2019 season with The Ghosts of Lote Bravo by Hilary Bettis. The play centers on a mother and daughter who struggle to survive in violent Ciudad Juárez. Guided by La Santa Muerte, Juanda sees her daughter Raquel in a new light, ultimately learning about Raquel’s hidden hopes, dreams, and courage. It is a gritty and emotional new work exposing the raw underbelly of The United States’ relationship with Mexico and shows the human carnage left in NAFTA’s wake.

In ‘The Capital of Murdered Women,’ a mother turns to the Saint of Death to find her missing daughter. Ciudad Juárez, also called “the capital of murdered women,” is a border town run by drug cartels and US-backed maquiladoras where women often disappear. Ghosts... explores the pain, the violence against women and men, and the systems that perpetuate the oppression. Chair Jeff Janisheski says, “Bettis’ characters find hope and redemption through the power of faith but also through the power of storytelling and I hope we can all listen.” Ultimately, The Ghosts of Lote Bravo is a play about great hope amid relentless fear, poverty, and grief.

OPED Do African-American Farmers Support Kavanaugh for Supreme Court? ... Depends on Who You Ask By Lee Eric Smith

Black farmers are throwing their full support behind Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Supreme Court.

B

lack farmers also believe Kavanaugh would be a disaster for Black America—including Black farmers. And if you’re confused after reading those two sentences, it’s because where Black farmers stand on Kavanaugh’s nomination depends on who you ask—and which organization of Black farmers they represent. In mid-August, the Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association (BFAA) sent a glowing letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, encouraging them to approve Kavanaugh’s nomination—based on Kavanaugh’s favorable ruling in a BFAA matter in October 2017. “Kavanaugh rendered a decision in favor of Black farmers on the merits of the evidence... (He) was prepared, attentive and had command of the facts,” said BFAA president Thomas Burrell, in a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley on BFAA letterhead. “If confirmed, these are traits that Judge Brett Kavanaugh would bring to the bench as an Associate Justice.” The problem with that statement is that the Memphis-based BFAA isn’t the only organization representing Black farmers. And the National Black Farmers Association (NBFA) couldn’t be more opposed to Kavanaugh’s nomination, said president John W. Boyd, Jr. “We’re absolutely opposed to it,” Boyd told The New Tri-State Defender. “He would be bad for African-American farmers. Bad for AfricanAmericans. Bad for this country.” Decisions, Decisions In a TSD interview,

leads the Virginia-based NBFA, is firmly opposed to Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. “I read the emails released by Sen. Cory Booker,” Boyd said. “I don’t think Kavanaugh would be a good fit for America.” And while Boyd wouldn’t name any specific people or organizations, he lamented that misinformation about Black farmer lawsuits is giving families false hope that a government check is on the way. “The Black Farmers case is closed and settled,” said Boyd, referring to the famous Pigford ruling of 2010. “I know there were some farmers who didn’t file in time, or it was determined that they weren’t eligible, and I’m sorry about that. I really am. But there’s just a lot of bad information out there. “There’s no pot of money that will compensate African-American farmers,” Boyd continued. “President Obama settled all of that already. I was there.” Boyd reiterated that the Boyland lawsuit is not only completely different from the Pigford case, the USDA program under fire in the Boyland suit is designed to compensate women and

Latino farmers and was never intended to redress discrimination against Black farmers. “We take calls all day long from people who believe there’s money,” Boyd said. “We believe the parties involved have a responsibility to give accurate information. There are a lot of confused elderly AfricanAmericans out here who believe there’s money out there to tap and it’s just not true. There’s no pot of money that will compensate the AfricanAmerican farmer.” The two organizations have a contentious relationship, if not a confrontational one. Boyd and the NBFA fear that farmers are being solicited to pay dues to participate in the Boyland case—with no shot at a USDA payout. Meanwhile, the BFAA refuses to give up the fight, and alleges that the NBFA is at least partially financed by the USDA. “They can say the case is settled all they want,” said Bishop David Allen Hall, a COGIC leader who serves as ecumenical advisor to BFAA. “Unlike NBFA, the federal government is not paying BFAA. We shoulder the cost of legal fees, the lawyers—our members pay their dues and that’s what we use them for.” Hall said that he and Burrell will return to Washington for court on Oct. 1. That’s when the Boyland suit will be presented before a “merits panel” which will decide if the suit proceeds, and if so, what possible payouts may be. And as for BFAA’s endorsement of Kavanaugh ... “We’ve looked at his integrity and he seemed to be ruling in these cases according to law,” Hall said. “He seems to have an air of fairness. Obviously, we don’t want anyone who will hurt the nation. “But going strictly on the merits of our case, he ruled that there had been discrimination,” Hall continued. “Why would I notgive the man a chance?”

OPED The Test of Our Progress By Marian Wright Edelman

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”

T

hese words are from President Franklin Roosevelt’s second inaugural address given January 20, 1937. The President was speaking to a nation crawling out of the Great Depression. Progress had been made but President Roosevelt knew a great nation was still capable of so much more. Below is what preceded that passage: “[H]ere is the challenge to our democracy: In this nation I see tens of millions of its citizens—a substantial part of its whole population—who at this very moment are denied the greater part of what the very lowest standards of today call the necessities of life. I see millions of families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hangs over them day by day. I see millions whose daily lives in city and on farm continue under conditions labeled indecent by a socalled polite society half a century ago. I see millions denied education, recreation, and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children. … It is not in despair that I paint you that picture. I paint it for you in hope—because the Nation, seeing and understanding the injustice in it, proposes to paint it out. We are determined to make every American citizen the subject of his country’s interest and concern; and we will never regard any faithful law-abiding group within our borders as superfluous.” We are facing another test of our moral progress today – and we are failing. U.S. Census Bureau figures for 2017 released this week show nearly 1 in 5 children in America still lives in poverty making them the poorest age group in our country. Almost one-third of the 39.7 million poor people in the United States are children. While the data show a slight reduction in child poverty in 2017 compared to 2016, the number of poor children – 12.8 million, 17.5 percent of all children – remains indecently high. And though unemployment numbers continue to fall, these gains have not kept families and children out of poverty. More than 70 percent of poor children come from working families who often face low and stagnant wages. The fact that nearly 1 in 5 children in America lives in poverty is morally and practically unacceptable and economically costly. The Miseducation of ‘Betsy DeVoid’ By Julianne Malveaux

Even her boss, the 45th President of the United States, is derisive of Education Secretary Betsey DeVoid, the Devos woman who is devoid, absent, of good sense. She may have even been placed in her position as payback for whatever support her wealthy family provided to the certified public liar of a leader. Education Secretary Betsey DeVoid has used her position to elevate her family’s economic advantage, and she has used her position to punish students whose interests are contrary to her own. She is a prime example of miseducation, and her tenure has been an attack on students. Let me count the ways:

1. DeVoid has lifted the for-profit college protections that President Barack Obama attempted to regulate. She chose to minimize the regulations that curtailed for-profit college exploitation. While the Obama administration attempted to make students,

New U.S. Survey Shows Some Progress Against Opioid Crisis By Carla K. Johnson

Figures from a U.S. government survey released Friday show some progress in the fight against the ongoing opioid addiction crisis with fewer people in 2017 using heroin for the first time compared to the previous year.

T

he number of new users of heroin decreased from 170,000 in 2016 to 81,000 in 2017, a oneyear drop that would need to be sustained for years to reduce the number of fatal overdoses, experts said. Fewer Americans are misusing or addicted to prescription opioid painkillers. And more people are getting treatment for heroin and opioid addiction, the survey found. The Trump administration said the positive trends show government efforts are working. Messages are reaching people about the dangers of heroin and the deadly contaminants it often contains on the street, Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, an administration health official, said in a video presentation released with the figures. Among the other findings: • Marijuana use climbed in all age groups except young teenagers, with 2.5 percent of those 26 and older, or 5.3 million adults, reporting they use marijuana daily or almost daily last year. • Methamphetamine and cocaine use climbed in young adults, ages 18 to 25. The uptick may indicate that users are shifting from opioids to other drugs, said Leo Beletsky, a public health policy expert at Northeastern

“It’s hard to look at this and not think we need to be doing a better job than we’re doing now.” Brendan Saloner, Addiction Researcher LA Sheriff’s Deputy holds tracking receiver mounted on LASD helicopters.

NIH Launches Initiative to Accelerate Genetic Therapies to Cure Sickle Cell Disease The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced the launch of a new initiative to help speed the development of a cure for sickle cell disease, a group of inherited blood disorders affecting at least 100,000 people in the United States and 20 million worldwide. The Cure Sickle Cell Initiative will take advantage of the latest genetic discoveries and technological advances to move the most promising genetic-based curative therapies safely into clinical trials within five to 10 years. “Our scientific invest- been working with researchers a contract research organizaments have brought us to a to manufacture cellular thera- tion with specialized expertise point where we have many peutic products, including ge- in clinical trials, gene and cell tools available to correct or netically modified cells, that therapy development in precompensate for the defective can be used safely in clinical clinical studies, as its coordinating center. gene that causes sickle cell trials with patients. The Cure Sickle Cell Initiative seeks to develop cures for a far broader group of individuals with the disease, and it is initially focusing on gene therapies that modify the patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which make red and other blood cells. These modified HSCs can then be given back to the patient via a bone marrow transplant, making a cure available to more patients who lack a matched donor. “This initiative is giving patients, families, and communities a reason for hope. I’m particularly pleased that we are able to make this announcement during Sickle Cell Awareness month, when we are shining a spotlight on the toll of this devastating disease,” said ADM Brett Giroir, M.D. Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This patient-focused Initiative builds on the legacy of NHLBI-supported research that has contributed to improving clinical care for patients who have sickle cell disease. It also complements the Institute’s broader sickle cell disease research investment, which includes basic, clinical, translational, and implementation science research.

But it was similar to the numbers of new heroin users in 2002 through 2008. Experts said there’s still work to be done before success can be declared. “Taken together, this does not look like the portrait of a nation with improving mental health and addiction issues,” said Brendan Saloner, an addiction researcher at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “It’s hard to look at this and not think we need to be doing a better job than we’re doing now.” Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released preliminary figures that appear to show a leveling off in overdose deaths in late 2017 and the first two months of this year. Health officials have said it’s too soon to say whether the nation’s drug crisis has peaked. But in an interview with The Associated Press this week, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said several measures of the crisis are improving. “We are making progress,” he said. “We are seeing a flattening of our deaths from overdose.”

NEWS FIRST Private Moon Flight Passenger to Invite Creative Guests

“I did not want to have such a fantastic experience by myself.” Yusaku Maezawa

LOS ANGELES—It’s not your average vacation, but a well-heeled traveler has bought a round-trip ticket around the moon.

J

apanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa said Monday that he plans to blast off on the first-ever private commercial trip around the moon and will invite six to eight artists, architects, designers and other creative people on the weeklong journey “to inspire the dreamer in all of us.” The SpaceX Big Falcon Rocket is scheduled to make the trip in 2023, company founder Elon Musk announced at an event Monday at its Hawthorne headquarters. Maezawa, 42, said he wants his guests for the lunar orbit “to see the moon up close, and the Earth in full view, and create work to reflect their experience.” Musk said the entrepreneur, founder of Japan’s largest retail website and one the country’s richest people, will pay “a lot of money” for the trip, but declined to disclose the exact amount. Maezawa came to SpaceX with the idea for the group flight, Musk said. “I did not want to have such a fantastic experience by myself,” said Maezawa, wearing a blue sports jacket over a white T-shirt with printed with a work by the late painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. He said he often mused about what artists like Basquiat or Andy Warhol might have come up with if they’d traveled into space. “I wish to create amazing works of art for humankind,” Maezawa said. Maezawa didn’t immediately say who will be on his guest list for the spaceflight, but in response to a question from a reporter he said he’d consider inviting Musk. “Maybe we’ll both be on it,” Musk said with a smile. He said the BFR is still in development and will make several unmanned test launches before it takes on passengers. The reusable 118-meter (387-foot) rocket will have its own dedicated passenger ship. The mission will not involve a lunar landing. The average distance from Earth to the moon is about 237,685 miles (382,500 kilometers). Astronauts last visited the moon during NASA’s Apollo program. Twenty-four men flew to the moon from 1968 through 1972 and half of them made it to the lunar surface. NASA is planning its own lunar flyby with a crew around 2023. The space agency also aims to build a staffed gateway near the moon during the 2020s. The outpost would serve as a stepping-off point for the lunar surface, Mars and points beyond. Musk outlined a somewhat different SpaceX mission last year. He said then that two people who know each other approached the company about a weeklong flight to the moon and back. He had said that the trip would happen this year. Musk did not name the clients last year or say how much they would pay. That original mission would have used a Falcon Heavy rocket — the most powerful rocket flying today — and a Dragon crew capsule similar to the one NASA astronauts will use to fly to the International Space Station as early as next year. The era of space tourism began in 2001 when California businessman Dennis Tito paid for a journey on a Russian rocket to the International Space Station. The trip was organized by the Virginia-based company Space Adventures, which has since sent several more paying customers on spaceflights. SpaceX already has a long list of firsts, with its sights ultimately set on Mars. It became the first private company to launch a spacecraft into orbit and safely return it to Earth in 2010, and the first commercial enterprise to fly to the space station in 2012 on a supply mission.

Obama’s Return: Good or Bad for Democrats?

By Juana Summers and Marc Levy WASHINGTON (AP)—Former President Barack Obama is campaigning again. While he spent most of his post-presidency outside of day-to-day politics, Obama is mapping out a final effort ahead of November’s elections to help Democrats take back the House of Representatives and win seats in the Senate. Aides to Obama say he’s assessing what his full schedule will be ahead of November’s election, but his next campaign stop will be in Pennsylvania. Obama won that state in 2008 and again in 2012. On that trip, the former president will campaign for Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey and other Pennsylvania Democrats, and headline a closed-door fundraiser. Republicans say they welcome Obama’s return and say he could energize Republican voters.

Del Taco Hit with Sexual Harassment Lawsuit from EEOC

LAKE FOREST—The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a civil rights lawsuit Monday against the Lake Forest-based Del Taco restaurant chain alleging three male employees at a Rancho Cucamonga store sexually harassed a group of young female workers. The federal agency contends that a hostile work environment forced the female employees to quit. A Del Taco spokesman issued this statement on behalf of the company: “Del Taco takes this matter very seriously and we are currently investigating the allegations that have been brought to our attention. Based on the findings of that investigation we will take action as appropriate. Del Taco is committed to providing a safe environment for all employees and customers, free from harassment of any kind.” One of the workers said she was harassed by three co-workers, including two bosses, when she was 16 to 18 years old, according to the complaint. She was subjected to lewd comments about her lips and was told, “You are pretty; You are hot; and You are sexy,” at various times, the complaint alleges. Her “shift leader” told her, “he had a dream of having sex with her and another female co-worker and telling her it can become a reality, asking her about her sexual activity, and

other times she would be told to “drop it like it’s hot” and asked to “dance for me, baby,” the suit alleges. One woman said she overheard a general manager “share

about his sex life with the female cashiers during work,” according to the lawsuit. Another worker said a shift leader would repeat the lyrics of “vulgar songs” to her and tell her to “shake that ass girl” when she would bend over, according to the suit. One woman said a general manager offered the holiday greeting, “Merry Christmas, sexy,” according to the suit. Sexual harassment is rampant in the fast-food industry, according to a 2016 survey by Hart Research Associates conducted for the National Partnership for Women and Families, the Ms. Foundation and Futures Without Violence, organizers said. Forty percent of female fast-food workers experience unwanted sexual behavior on the job.

The 2016 Hart Research survey also showed that 42 percent of women in the industry who experience unwanted sexual behavior feel forced to accept it because they can’t afford to lose their jobs. The Hart Survey also reported that more than one in five women who face sexual harassment -- 21 percent -- report that, after raising the issue, their employer took some negative action, including cutting their hours, changing them to a less desirable schedule, giving them additional duties and being denied a raise.

As Senate Weighs Kavanaugh, Thomas Example Offers Cautions By Mark Sherman WASHINGTON (AP)—The sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh recall Anita Hill’s accusations against Clarence Thomas in 1991, but there are important differences as well as cautions for senators considering how to deal with the allegations. The decision to have Thomas and Hill testify publicly before the Senate Judiciary Committee, as Kavanaugh and his accuser have offered to do, had far-reaching implications for American politics and society’s efforts to grapple with sexual harassment in the workplace. Republicans were perceived as too harsh in their questioning of Hill. Democrats faced criticism for being timid in her defense. Former Vice President Joe Biden, then the committee chairman, told Teen Vogue magazine last year that he should have acted more thoroughly on Hill’s accusations. “I wish I had been able to do more for Anita Hill. I owe her an apology,” said Biden, a Democrat. Kavanaugh’s confirmation, which once appeared all but certain, was cast in doubt after Christine Blasey Ford said in an interview published Sunday by The Washington Post that a drunken Kavanaugh groped her and tried to take off her clothes at a party when they were teenagers. Ford said Kavanaugh put his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream. Kavanaugh, who was nominated by President Donald Trump, said in a statement Monday that Ford’s accusation was “completely false.” There are parallels in the two cases. Like Kavanaugh, Thomas denied he had acted inappropriately. In both cases, the allegations became public only after the nominees went through their initial confirmation hearings. Both accusers initially sought to stay anonymous but later changed their minds. In 1991, an estimated 20 million people watched as Hill, then a University of Oklahoma law professor, accused Thomas of making unwanted advances and lewd remarks when she worked for him at the Education Department and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the 1980s. Thomas, who was nominated by President George H.W. Bush, related in his memoir that when he was first asked by FBI agents whether he made sexual advances to Hill or talked about pornography with her, he replied, “Absolutely not.” By the time he testified in a second round of hearings, following Hill, he said, “From my standpoint, as a Black American, as far as I’m concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity Blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas.” Republicans aggressively questioned Hill, who is also Black, suggesting that she had made up the unwelcome advances from Thomas and trying to raise doubts about her stability. Thomas won confirmation by a vote of 52 to 48, with 11 Democrats supporting him in a Senate they controlled. But on both sides of the aisle, there was wide agreement that the questioning of Thomas and Hill was not the Senate Judiciary Committee’s finest hour.

to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He is also expected to be ordered to register for the rest of his life as a sex offender. Flowers was suspected of 13 gunpoint attacks on as many as 14 sex trade workers in the South Los Angeles area over the past four years, authorities said earlier this year. Detectives conducting surveillance of the area arrested Flowers about 1:30 a.m. Jan. 12, after a 19-year-old woman got out of his car in an area where

he is suspected of releasing other alleged victims, according to Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Justin Eisenberg. The vehicle and his home were searched and a handgun was recovered, police said. Flowers is due back in a Compton courtroom for sentencing on Oct. 29.

NEWS Black Female Democrats Call for Changes in Party

By Errin Haines Whack

WASHINGTON (AP)—Insurgent Democratic women running for Congress are pushing the party to rethink its approach to politics if they retake control of Capitol Hill in the fall.

A

t the annual meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus last Friday, Black female candidates who prevailed in primaries over established incumbents said it’s time for a conversation about how the party is structured. They expressed frustration that the party is tilted against rising politicians—especially those of color—and argued that if Democrats flip the House in November, it would be the result of organization and turnout amount Black voters, particularly women. If that happens, the candidates said, gratitude won’t be enough. They want a seat at the leadership table and a role in re-examining how the party works. “It is not enough to just talk about a blue wave and Democrats being in the majority,” said Ayanna Pressley, the Boston city councilwoman now poised to become Massachusetts’ first Black congresswoman. “What matters is who are those Democrats? We have to have a conversation about the guts and the soul of this party.” Pressley won her primary last month by 18 points after challenging a 10-term incumbent initially endorsed by the Congressional Black Caucus. Without a Republican challenger in the general election, she appears to have a clear path to Congress. Her comments foreshadow the challenges that lie ahead if Democrats regain control of the House in November. The party will have to reconcile the anti-establishment energy of a diverse set of freshmen with a leadership structure dominated by lawmakers who are mostly white and have held office for decades. Connecticut House Democratic nominee Jahana Hayes also challenged a state political veteran to win her shot at becoming the state’s first Black congresswoman. The former National Teacher of the Year told the CBC audience that she lacked support during her primary. “Everyone said, ‘You don’t have the network, no one knows you.’ I had never run for political office, I had no money,” Hayes said. “I’m doing this for the people who don’t have

a voice.” Since her recent win with 62 percent of the vote, Hayes said, “it’s popular to support me now.” After Black women “showed up and showed out” this primary season, they are taking their rightful place, said Rep. Terri Sewell, who in 2010 was elected Alabama’s first Black congresswoman. The Selma Democrat was instrumental in Sen. Doug Jones’ special election last winter, when he became the first Democrat to represent Alabama in the Senate in 25 years. “We’ve been the backbone of the Democratic Party for a long time and we’re finally getting our due,” said Sewell. “There were a whole bunch of people he doesn’t even know that did a whole bunch of work to help him get there.” Those people were the Black women who often work with little or no financial support for infrastructure, she said. “We need to activate the people on the ground who have been doing this work for free,” Sewell said. “They need resources. It’s not just about a seat at the table.” LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter Fund, agreed, noting that grassroots groups like hers have long filled the gap when the official party apparatus was absent. “It’s our table,” said Brown, who galvanized Black women to support Jones. “We have to have some really deep conversations about how the landscape has changed.” That also includes addressing priorities within the party, Pressley said. “I reject the notion that this is about working class white folk and everyone else!” Pressley told the cheering crowd. “I reject the notion that we’re going to have an actual debate about if we are the party of jobs and the economy, or of criminal justice reform. I’m not choosing.” Some CBC meeting attendees noted the party has made efforts this cycle. This summer, the Democratic National Committee launched an initiative aimed at Black women. After voting overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton in 2016, many Black women said they felt

ENTERTAINMENT Emmys: An Epic Proposal, but Winners Lacking in Diversity

‘Ain’t Too Proud’ and the Weight of Lead Singers! By Larry S. Buford Last night I went to see the play “Ain’t Too Proud” at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. It was a very entertaining performance; the cast and orchestration were superb. I applaud award-winning playwright and native Detroiter Dominique Morriseau. Being a native Detroiter myself, I was glad to see such an eclectic ethnic audience really enjoying and appreciating the Black music that we grew up on. However, the story was too predictable as in, it was still told through the lens of lone surviving group member Otis Williams. Somehow the history of the “tantalizing five” is being locked in to the perspective based on Mr. Williams’ book, and the popular TV miniseries that was based upon it. In an interview printed in the program, Morriseau said, “Being able to tell this story from a generation removed allows me to see it from my parents’ lens, the Generation X lens, and through the Millennial lens.” Unfortunately, those lenses are fogged and blurred, and someone needs

to get the story right. As former band leader Cornelius Grant once said in another setting, “I wish they would focus more on the talent than the personalities.” Williams is to be commended for keeping alive The Temptations’ legacy, but where he chose to camp on the weight of his role

Paul also did a show-stopper “Don’t Look Back” on the Bside of “My Baby.” David Ruffin joined the group in time to be on the recording of “The Way You Do The Things You Do.” He had already had local success as a solo artist with songs like “Action Speaks Louder Than Words,” and “Bus Driver.” He was also a member of The Voicemasters who recorded a song titled “Free” led by Ty Hunter who became a member of The Originals. “Free” was conceptualized after Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang.” Smokey Robinson (more later about the disservice to him) who became the Tempts’ primary producer, had the foresight to write songs fashioned for Ruffin’s husky, world-weary voice similar to Sam Cooke’s style. It was timely – Sam Cooke died December 1964; “My Girl” with Ruffin up front began climbing the charts the next month January 1965. The baton was passed. The weight was on Ruffin to fill the void and he delivered with songs like “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby, and “My Baby” (where he really sounded a lot like Cooke). That was under Smokey as writer/producer.

I think the play “Ain’t Too Proud” is superb.

“The Proposal.” It was a 2009 movie starring Sandra Bullock, but now will forever be the informal title of the 2018 Emmys telecast, thanks to a memorable romantic gesture from Emmy-winning director Glenn Weiss — who summoned the courage to propose to his girlfriend on live TV. She said yes — thank the Lord. The stars in the audience responded with gasps (we saw you, Leslie Jones) and even tears (we saw you too, Queen Elizabeth — er, Claire Foy.) That feel-good moment — along with crowd-pleasing speeches by Henry Winkler and Betty White — lightened the mood of an evening that otherwise had a lackluster feel, and disappointed many with the lack of ethnic diversity among its winners. Some moments we’ll be talking about:

been given, that “if you stay at the table long enough, the chips come to you.” “Tonight I got to clear the table,” he said, and then jokingly told his (adult) children: “You can go to bed now. Daddy won!”

as group founder and decisionmaker, he failed to show the weight placed upon the prominent lead singers – he himself not being a lead singer. Paul Williams’ and Eddie Kendricks’ lead vocals carried the group in the early days on songs like “Check Yourself,” “I Want A Love I Can See,” and “Farewell My Love.” After the Tempts broke out with “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” Eddie became the focus of every writer/producer at Motown that yielded songs like “(Girl) Why You Wanna Make Me Blue,” and “The Girls Alright With Me.” The B-side of “The Way You Do The Things You Do” was a churchy call and response “Just Let Me Know” with Paul on lead.

BETTY WHITE STEALS THE SHOW If that was a feel-good moment, what do you call the sublime appearance of 96-year-old White, honored for 80 years in television? The star of “Golden Girls” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” got such a huge ovation from the crowd that she quipped: “I’m just gonna quit while I’m ahead.” “It’s incredible,” White said, “that you can stay in a career this long and still have people put up with you. I wish they did that at home.” And she showed she wasn’t above — or beyond — a racy joke: “I want to thank Lorne Michaels for everything he’s done with me. I mean, for me,” she said of the “Saturday Night Live” creator and producer of the evening’s telecast.
