ABOUT THIS AREA
S
alford is a small Oxfordshire village set in farmland about 1.5 miles west of the historic market town of Chipping Norton. The Shakespeare's Way long-distance trail leads across the fields from Chipping Norton to Salford and crosses the small brook, a tributary of the River Evenlode, which some think gives Salford its name (from the Old English Sealhford, meaning the ford by the willow trees). Another possibility is that the name comes from an old salt track, a route used by traders carrying salt from the Midlands to London. The history of Salford goes back as far as the 8th Century. There were two manors at the time of the Norman Conquest. The most interesting historical building is the 12th Century parish church, St Mary's, which stands at the western end of the village. Occupying the highest point of Oxfordshire, Chipping Norton is a bustling market town located around 23 miles northwest of Oxford in the Cotswold Hills. Like many Cotswold towns, Chipping Norton is incredibly pretty, many of the original houses around the market place were rebuilt in the 18th century with fashionable Georgian frontages. The town’s wealth grew through the local wool trade and today is renowned for its antique shops and diverse shopping, including a regular market. Chipping Norton retains a robust living, working market town atmosphere, there is a good choice of places to eat, supermarkets and topquality entertainment at the wonderful theatre, famous for its pantomime and visiting performers.
