Dear Country School Companions,

Thank you for supporting The Country School through your generous monetary donations, giftsin-kind contributions, and time on campus. We would not be where we are today without your unending support.

Six years ago I stepped foot on our campus for the first time as an employee. Several words came to mind that first summer: lucky, magic, privilege, grateful, community. From those first moments, my strongest feeling, however, was one of admiration for the strength of our school’s foundation. I walked the campus, studying each named space, and questioned, Who was Mrs. Robinson? Mrs. DeFrancis? Mr. Blatchford? With wonder I found lists of named graduates who thanked their teachers by dedicating classrooms, locker rooms, athletic fields. On that warm July walk, I understood that my feeling of strength at my new school was a gift from countless grateful families, hopeful children, and passionate teachers who believed in the future then that my family and I live and enjoy today.

Some of this year’s highlights include:

• Nearly half a million dollars contributed to the Annual Fund, Endowment, and Capital gifts between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022

• More than $51,000 gifted to found three new endowments: Coyne Scholarship Fund, Sarah Barber Performing Arts Fund, and Dr. John Lee Public Speaking Fund.

My deepest gratitude to all co-chairs, room parents, and volunteers who dedicated countless hours to assure the success of the numerous events held on and off campus, including the Spring Soiree and Auction, Grandparents’ or Special Friends’ Day, Book Fair, Shrek , and the many events sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) that once again brought smiles to students and parents alike.

Learning at Country School is about exploration, revelation, and surprise. Surprise at the world:

“Ah-ha!” and “I never knew that!” moments. Learning is about surprising ourselves. In the right environment, with the right tools, we unexpectedly tap into parts of ourselves that reveal a talent or skill or innate knowledge that we didn’t know we had. Our alumni savor this experience while our students grow up in just this kind of environment–where students discover their magic within.

I am proud to announce TheTalentWithinCapitalCampaign . Thank you to our Board of Trustees and our Administration for your vision on this project that will ensure that our teachers have the tools and resources to unlock the talent within each student.

Over the next 3 years, The Talent Withinwill:

• Create a larger overall endowment to better secure the long term health of our school

• Construct a new Engineering Facility and Maker Space building.

• Reach the Annual Fund goal each year.

During TheTalentWithinCampaign , our entire community–alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, former and current trustees, grandparents, community friends–will be asked to make a gift to the Annual Fund, the fund that bridges the gap between your tuition dollars and the cost of a Country School education. In addition to the Annual Fund, many donors will contribute to our exciting new building and endowments.

Gifts to tHe endowment

Gifts to the Endowment are gifts to ensure our programs continue to grow and investments in the future of The Country School.

teacHeR endowment

For 67 years, Country School teachers have cared for and instructed our most precious commodity–our students. Today, 59 faculty members exude our mission. They make a living and make a life on campus, often wearing hats beyond the classroom–as coaches, as parents, as advisors, as trip leaders, as committee chairs. Academic leadership and teaching delivered by our faculty represent the heart of The Country School and its mission. The school must therefore continue to offer competitive compensation to attract and retain the best educators. This endowment allows us to raise salaries plus raise stipends for sports coaching, arts, duties, bringing us closer to public school compensation and better-endowed independent schools.

The Country School provides the finest elementary and middle school experience available, a responsibility that rests on the strength of our faculty. Outstanding teachers immeasurably advance the school’s academic reputation. The Teacher Endowment Fund allows all generations shaped by The Country School to honor teachers. Donors may make a gift in honor or memory of the teachers, staff members and administrators whose impact lives in their hearts.

Today, the ability to competitively compensate our valued teachers presents a challenge as costs of living are increasing more quickly than tuition can be increased. Over the past two years, 10 families have come together with gifts to initiate the Endowment Fund for Teachers, hoping to inspire our entire community to make a difference to the teachers who shaped the lives of our alumni and continue to mold the minds of our future alumni. We aim to add $2,650,000 to the Teacher Endowment, with the annual draw earmarked specifically to invest in three key areas for faculty: compensation, professional development, and eventual retirement. To honor the work and legacy of the late David T. MacLane, The Country School’s first headmaster, and his wife, Marcia, a special scholarship fund was created in 2012. Established by the MacLanes’ son, Duncan ‘64, and his wife, JoAnn, the MacLane Endowment creates learning opportunities for those whose options were previously limited, benefiting both the scholarship recipients and The Country School community as a whole.

The David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship is a perpetual scholarship fund, tied to the permanent Founders’ Promise Fund. Since its establishment only a decade ago, the fund has grown to $292,000, already helping to educate 16 students who otherwise could not have afforded to attend and become leaders at The Country School and then beyond. In 1990, visionary Sarah Barber and her colleagues acted on their passion for integrating the performing arts into the classroom. The team focused on fostering passion through the arts, as the arts hold a unique capacity to inspire and ignite passions, and in doing so, help connect students to one another, to their local community, and to the world as a whole. Performing Arts at The Country School explores the importance of awakening and developing students’ personal passions and how those passions are vital to deep and meaningful learning.

JoHn Lee puBLic speakinG endowment fund

Founded in 2022 in memory of Dr. John Lee and in honor of Dr. Lee’s wife, Sang, and their children, Emma ‘22 and Kai ‘25, the John Lee Public Speaking Endowment Fund celebrates courage at The Country School by securing the delivery of excellent and effective public speaking education. One of The Country School’s Signature Programs, Public Speaking nurtures young leaders to speak comfortably and confidently, assertively, and intentionally, in all arenas of life, to adults and peers, family and strangers.

Knowing and using their voices and empathetic listening, our students lear n that what they have to say is important and that what others have to say is worth hearing. Country School students lear n that successful orators understand and engage their audience in specific ways that can be taught and learned. From our youngest PreSchool learner to our 8th Grade Elmore Leaders, Country School students mature as public speakers through guided and deliberate practice.

Through the John Lee Public Speaking Endowment Fund, The Country School broadens delivery of explicit public speaking instruction and develops during school and after-school programming.

Founded in 2022 in appreciation by Dr. David Yuh and Dr. Bonnie Hiatt P ’22, ’22, the Elizabeth Coyne Scholarship Fund is awarded to deserving 6th-8th Grade students who live the mission of our school. The receiving students are leaders in all aspects of our mission and exhibit creativity, a sense of wonder, and intellectual curiosity. Recipients rigorously approach academics and seek to empower their peers to serve the common good–on campus and off.

Recipients of The Elizabeth Coyne Scholarship Fund are selected based on need and merit as well as personal promise and their potential to grow as leaders at The Country School.

Scholarships are renewed each year that the students are enrolled at The Country School, provided the recipients stay in strong academic standing and demonstrate good citizenship. These Coyne Scholarship recipients contribute significantly to the life of The Country School, creating a stronger overall experience for all students.

Inspired by the Burt Family’s generosity to scholarship in the 50th year, the Founders’ Promise Fund for Scholarship Endowment was founded by the Daitch Family during The Country School’s 55th Anniversary to honor the school’s Founders.

The Founders’ Promise Fund Endowment is an investment in the future and is an essential component in our mission to provide an education that lasts a lifetime. Gifts to the Founders Promise Fund provide tuition assistance to more than 20% of our students. By assisting the school as we recruit and retain students, it gives more and more children the opportunity to realize their potential, which fulfills the Founders’ vision for the school. What began with one student noting that he hoped to give the faculty a place to gather, developed into a much needed renovation of a widely used space. The Spring Soiree and Auction, chaired by Suzanne Sliker P’22, ’20 and Alise Ferency P ’24, was held on on campus on the Burt Family Green on May 20 with trustees, former trustees, current and past parents, teachers, and alumni in attendance. Competitive bidding began with the kickoff of the online auction and culminated with a lively live auction in person. Countless of volunteer hours and generous donations helped raise nearly $60,000 for the Annual Fund and Teacher Endowment.
