Myth Or Reality – What Affects Your Credit Score? Even the most responsible person in the world who has never missed a payment could be missing a good credit score. Why? Because it takes time to build a reputation, which is based on what you’ve done. The general guidance for creating a good reputation and credit score aligns with what one would expect: Live within your means in order to be able to make payments on time to whoever has extended you any form of credit. Establish a history of paying on time, and lenders will be more likely to want to lend to you. Intuit recently acquired Credit Karma for $7.1 billion, a firm with a user base of over 100 million, with 37 million active monthly users taking advantage of their service to better monitor and build a credit score (among other services). People want to understand their credit scores, and it isn’t always easy to do so. Here are some popular myths that have arisen about credit scores, the reality of where they stem from, and the actual effects they have on one’s credit score. Myth #1: Paying interest on credit cards improves my credit rating. Reality – People associate credit card companies profiting with their wanting to extend ever more credit to boost profits as long as the customer keeps paying the minimum balance. In fact, paying on time improves your credit score even if the balance is paid down to zero. Though having active accounts longer can increase your creditworthiness, it is not necessary for them to be carrying a balance from month to month. Myth #2: Checking my credit score hurts my credit score. Reality – Checking your own credit score does not hurt your credit score, and statistics show that people who do are likely to improve their credit scores. No-effect checks on your credit score: Initiated by you – Checking on your own credit score

Initiated by company – “Soft check” by company requested to pre-approve a credit offering for you When there is an effect Initiated by you – “Hard check” by company requested to extend credit, such as a loan or credit increase – small negative effect Myth #3: I should ask to be extended the amount of credit I need. Reality – One of the metrics for your credit score is based on your credit utilization. If you ask for a credit increase (easiest to get when the credit utilization is lower), it will in fact further reduce the utilization. For example, if you have one credit card using $5,000 of a $10,000 limit, your utilization would be 50%. If that limit was increased to $15,000, your utilization would be reduced to 33%, which would improve your credit rating. This would likely represent a hard check on your credit rating, which may reduce your score at the same time, but that change will only affect your credit rating for one year, and be less than you gained by changing the other metric. Of course, if you increased your spending at the same time, that could end up having an adverse effect and cause you to carry a higher balance. Myth #4: I need a credit card in order to establish a credit history. Reality – The easiest way to establish a credit history is generally to get a secured credit card or loan, or a loan with a co-signer sharing the liability, and build your way up from there. However, a credit card is not required to establish a credit history. One alternative tactic is to request that your landlord or utilities provide a record of your on-time payments to credit bureaus. A great reputation takes a lifetime to build, and a good credit report is no different. Creating a lasting legacy should also involve providing guidance and cultivating values. There’s more to it than simply transferring financial assets to the next generation. ‘THE BIG TALK’: When Should You Have It? Long gone are the days of diapers, formula, and baby foods. Fast approaching are the dreaded “teenage years.” “Watch out, hold onto your parental hats, it is going to be a fast and bumpy ride” may all be appropriate descriptive terms. Yes, our children are approaching puberty.

Puberty is a time of significant physical, emotional, and psycho-social changes for children. These changes may cause confusion, stress and a host of other issues in a child. As you, the reader, progress through this article, keep this ONE THING IN MIND - BE PATIENT, BE PATIENT, and BE PATIENT. As a parent, this stage is going to be as difficult, if not more difficult, for you than your son or daughter. You, the parent, are your kid’s best asset. It is your job to teach, advise, counsel and, most importantly, listen to your son or daughter. You may or may not like what you hear. Try not to be angry or upset. Keep your child close to you and maintain open lines of communication. Puberty starts at varied ages; some start early, some late. Some develop quickly, others develop slowly. There is no hard and fast rule for this. Boys tend to take after their dads and the males in their family. Consider other family members and the ages for puberty. This may give you a clue as to when your own son or daughter will start puberty. From a medical perspective, doctors usually recommend that kids who start puberty before the age of eight-and-a-half to nine have a medical check-up. Also those who have not started puberty by their fourteenth or fifteenth birthday should see a doctor. It’s important to remember that starting early or late does not always mean there is something wrong. However, when there is something wrong, the problem can be treated by a doctor at an early age to allow the child to develop normally. Pimples, perspiration, and body hair growth. Most of us recall our first body changes. Hair growth in pubic areas, armpits, legs and arms is not too distressing to most kids. Just an aside, to dispel a popular rumor, shaving does not cause more hair growth. It may look like more but it is not. Shaving cuts the hair shaft, removing the tapered tip and exposing the wider shaft, so it looks like more hair growth. Body odor can start to occur during this period. Consider teaching the use of personal care products. For young women the body changes are more pronounced and noticeable. The enlargement of breast tissue begins in this stage, as well as an overall change in the contour of her body. This can be distressing to some women. The use of a bra or other supportive garments is really up to the individual. Support her in her decision to wear or not wear a bra. The next mountain is the start of her menses

or period. The onset of menses is the beginning of a variety of things. The most important one being this signifies her ability to become pregnant. Your daughter may wrestle with the decision to use a tampon or pad. Use of a tampon may disrupt the hymen. There are commercially available smaller tampons with plastic applicators that may offer her some advantages for ease of placement. Other issues may arise such as romantic feelings and sexual feelings. Young people often face questions about how to handle strong romantic and sexual feelings. This is an important time to really examine your own feelings, organize some basic concepts in your mind. And really try to talk with your child. They can use the guidance. At this time it is important to discuss the “what” and “how to” related to sexual activity. Kids today start at a young age. Don’t ignore the subject. It is important to discuss sexual contact, intercourse and, yes, birth control. Include in this safe sex practices and STD prevention. As a gynecologist, I have helped many parents with the talk. I have over the years developed the ability to effectively communicate with young women. This is a time of many emotions like confusion, anxiety, and excitement about growing up. It may also be a time when our kids have the “blues.” These ups and downs are very common in this age group. Part of the reason we have these feelings may be the new hormones our bodies are making. Our hormones are powerful substances and they can affect our emotions and our bodies. It takes our bodies and our emotions some time to adjust to these hormones. At times, all these changes are overwhelming. Your children may feel scared, uncertain, anxious or depressed. Be there to support, listen and at times talk to your children. You are their best asset. Try to keep them safe and out of trouble. In my own life, I have three children of my own. They are fast approaching at this age. I have started to have “the talk” with one of my own. It is really not as easy as one would think. When it comes down to it, this is a really difficult subject. It is stressprovoking for both my son and me. Kids can be difficult to reach, so keep trying. Again, be patient, don’t pre-judge; guide them, don’t push them. Dear Readers, In these unprecedented times, all we can do is hope for better days ahead. The last few months have been stressful and downright scary for our entire nation, actually world. We have learned to live “virtually “by connecting with our loved ones across a screen. All kinds of plans from graduations to Little League have either been cancelled or postponed. Normal life as we know it was put on hold. However, Mother Nature has not rescheduled and with summer just around the corner the Jersey Shore is about to come alive. With so much of our time restricted, people all across the state will be eager to get outside and get back to living a normal life. There are a myriad of reasons to celebrate in the next couple of months. May and June we can recognize the tremendous work of Moms and Dads everywhere. For many who live at the shore, there will be long days spent at the beach or boardwalk. Take some time to visit all the local restaurants and shops that have no doubt suffered losses due to Covid-19. Whether your idea of fun includes touring the lighthouses or visiting the many local wineries, it’s a time to get out and be thankful we made it through. Please remember to continue to practice sanitary precautions like washing your hands and maintaining a safe distance from one another when appropriate. Enjoy the summer!

Fear—A Mixed Blessing? Even Now? By Charles E. Meusburger, M.D. The chief predator of the human mind is pain. Pain in all five of its forms, i.e.: physical, emotional, psychological, visceral or even spiritual. They have some similarities and overlaps, but they are all separate and distinct, each in their own way. Once pain of any kind has been experienced or even seriously threatened, it sets up the mind to forevermore be a mental antibody, a defensive pump that’s primed to go off again and again. If the pain is withstood, even and especially traumatically, the residual souvenir of all that and the number-two level predator of the human mind—FEAR is the result. Fear is a mixed blessing, just like pain is. You ask, “Blessing, what blessing!?” This first reaction is very understandable, but it’s a defensive emotional reaction. Underneath that layer lies a deeper, more essential layer that is a combination of psychological and visceral. Fear on that plane is a protective/preventative measure that’s designed to function as an early warning system to preserve and protect the organism from being exposed to undue, serious harm unwittingly. Its discomfort is such so that we actually pay attention to it. If it was pleasant, we would be lulled to the slaughter over and over. Understanding its mixed effects can at least help to perhaps move it to a state of conscious ambivalence instead of compounding fear with fret and dread and simply adding more reactive fear. This can become overwhelming and exhausting, and compromise your largest and most important defense—your immune system. Panic is just the beginning. Psychosis can develop if fear is left unchecked or persists too long. If enough of the combustible ingredients accrue over time, then the ultimate control or even defense mechanism may occur—suicide! If fear is extreme and helplessness, hopelessness overboils, then it’s better to control something—i.e. my own demise, the timing and the means—instead of all these overwhelming feelings of being put out of control. So what’s the point of all this right now? Under the increasing weightiness of widespread uncertainty, daily tote boards of the sick and deceased, a scourge of biblical proportions not ‘passing over’ but infiltrating everywhere and virtually everyone in some scary way, the point is an old FDR one from 1932: “…the only thing we have to fear is fear itself; nameless unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” This was part of an inaugural address to combat the emotional surges during the Depression. Now is a time of great uncertainty, trepidation and disconcerting forced isolationism. This is contrary to what humans usually do at times of great stress—even after the acuity and travesty of 9/11, we huddled up together all over. So understand that your fear, although uncomfortable and agitating, is just your mind trying to

get your attention so as to protect you a bit better from whatever the threats truly are, both perceived and actual. We don’t benefit from fearing our fear functionally, and we all definitely need to function as well as possible now and going forward in a unified fashion. Solitude breeds ‘every man for themselves’ mindsets. Hence, there are no guns or ammo left on the shelves; again, understandable certainly, but not a good sign. Is it helpful? Not at all; it is very harmful as a matter of fact. Fear is no fun because it signals pain is on the way— maybe now. Chronically, it gives way to depression, and that won’t assist anything good or advance function. Try to be your own best allies now. There is a common foe: let’s unite behind solid planning and inspired leadership—if we can have some of that—and be a force to be reckoned with now, for the good of all. Orson Welles, the great actor and director from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, orchestrated a radio broadcast in 1938 called The War of the Worlds. In this broadcast it was told to the entire world that we were about to be invaded by the planet Mars—or—the Martians are coming! Because this confirmed pre-established fears of such a possible reality, the world believed it and reacted with shock and awe, but also with resolve and unity to fight the common foe. Even the Germans stopped and paid attention during their attacks on Europe and banded together with everyone else to oppose the outside threat. Everybody outside Germany even forgot about Adolf Hitler for 24 hours. The broadcast was staged and not true, of course, but the rallying cry of a common outside foe served, however briefly, to unite us as a people, regardless of our differences, to fight a threat to all. We need to stir up the same solidarity and fervor and trust in order to fight back against this invisible invader that is an assassin deluxe and shows no mercy. Let history give us guidance and energy to be creative, smart and forthright to help defeat this scourge of all humanity. We are, after all, just one race—the human race. There are five words with their self-evident definitions and accompanying infrastructure that may assist you if you make them your new “Fire Drill” to help you to self-modulate your emotions/reactions and to keep you grounded, focused, healthier and safer. The five words are: INFORMED, ATTENTIVE, FLEXIBLE, ADAPT and DISCIPLINE. All of them, if understood and practiced often, can assist with greater confidence and awareness on how to better manage yourself and the predictably unpredictable demands of the COVID-19 virus era. No human endeavor can possibly be successful in the absence of consistent discipline. Introduce the best defense that we possess—humor—when appropriate and tasteful. Uncertainty is always unsettling: long durations and encroaching serious disease, requisite isolation, economic overwhelms, children and elders at home, endless do’s and don’ts can exacerbate all forms of preexisting mental illness and substance abuse. It can even start some of these de

novo. Most people under duress will revert to the familiar, not the ‘newfangled’ option(s). Even if what’s familiar doesn’t work at all. One less piece of uncertainty is the knee-jerk preference and, in these times, a potentially fatal one. This requires cognition on, all the time. Emotions are advisory only and can never be the final decision makers for our actions—especially now. We cannot control how or what we feel at any given moment, nor should we try to quash everything. Be a good “manager” of your feelings with positive influences on yourself and your today—as often as you can. This will help you. Attempting to control will only inadvertently lead you to recurring self-defeat and more dysfunction. To stay a bit ahead of this new infamous ‘curve,’ try to be “attentive” to some structure in your day, be as productive as possible, maintain good health habits, i.e., healthy diet, physically active as often as you comfortably can; selective and limited TV time and social media time is recommended, be creative with your time and talent, avoid excesses, pray if you choose, stay ‘social’ in ways that don’t create risk, support those you know and especially those that you don’t—an unsolicited kindness, a thoughtful, generous gesture will carry great purpose and meaning. It will provide you with well-earned gifts. If you’re on medications of any kind, keep them filled and take them regularly as prescribed. This is no time for negative judgments or impulsivity. Unify and be smart to win this. Keep your eyes and ears turned on and notice all the many small miracles that are happening all around us and will continue to be revealed. Divide, accuse, steal, deny or be ignorant in any way, then just wait to be vanquished. Our office is available through the usual methods of telephone, email, and fax. Where to start my practice? How can I give my life meaning? What is my purpose? You don’t have to give up what is good in your life. There is no goal in yoga but instead a process of exploration. Along the way you may discover your true nature which is always there. Become what you are already. Live in harmony with life and the Now. Begin where you are. Take an honest look at self. Practice self-observation without judgement. What are some of my obstacles to a life of fulfillment? Which direction can I take? For yogis, the path is Dharma. Literally translated from the Sanskrit, it means that which supports or upholds. It is the teachings, truth and doctrine of those wise and learned minds that we follow on the path to enlightenment. Practicing the Dharma heals, alleviates and restores. Living one’s life more deeply is the meaning of Dharma. You must get to know yourself deeply and become more familiar with who you are. Look into the contents of your life. To do this you must discern your strengths and shortcomings. Everything that happens is part of the path. As practitioners, we tread the path with care. This translates into living an authentic life committed to a caring and ethically virtuous Dharma practice. By simply being on the spot, your life can become workable and wonderful. By being still and relaxing into this moment, you can connect with the fundamental notion of the basic goodness in yourself. Be willing to open yourself up and rediscover your tenderness. This kind of gentleness gives you an appreciation of yourself and the world around you. It is essential to tune in to genuine reality and your place on earth without any preconceptions or expectations. Our life is an endless journey; it is like a broad highway that extends infinitely into the distance. Our travel consists of constant ups and downs, hope and fear. But it is a good one. Practice allows us to experience all the textures of the roadway. It takes perseverance and skillful means to ride the highs and lows of life. Yoga practitioners stabilize the mind and develop the qualities of faith, energy, wisdom and awareness. Often, expectations prevent us from connecting to the present moment as it is because our mind is fixed on how we want or imagine it to be. But unshakeable faith develops as wisdom increases and suffering lessens. When your understanding of the true nature of things grows, life will change your values. Through this awareness, you will practice more and do well in life. With just the right effort and a willingness to show up for whatever arises in the body, mind or environment, you will cultivate the conditions for insight, tranquility, clarity, confidence and effortless energy. All of us have abundant opportunities to experience life in this way at this very moment. Then why is it so difficult to open the treasure trove within us? We think of “nirvana” as something beautiful and unattainable, different from our own life.

But understand that it is right here, right now. How is this possible? What is blocking us from realizing what is right in front of us? This is your life. Just be! Just do it! Wake up to the awareness that there is no separation between nirvana and your life. Appreciate your wonderful life! Enjoy the world of just this. You are the only one keeping you from this divine life. That is your practice. Don’t search for other worlds or distant lands. It’s not the pilgrimage that is our undoing, but the thought that we will get something out of it. Become a pilgrim with no hope of finding anything. Who knows what will come of you. Approach it with the right spirit and clear-eyed attention. The Buddha himself found what he had to see by sitting still, but even he had to travel to get to that point, to see through the other roads that would lead to nowhere. The journey is perpetual. Keep striving with diligence. In one sense we are always traveling. But in another, we have already arrived. The life of each of us is a journey toward where we have been all along. Wake up to the truth of what you have been carrying with you at every moment.

American Veterans — Time to Take Action

Nearly one in four Veterans receiving care from VA has diabetes. This is partly attributable to the older average age of Veterans compared to the general US population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 26 million people, or about 8 percent of the US population, have diabetes. That includes about 11 million persons 65 and older, or about 27 percent of seniors. In the United States, about one-in-four persons with diabetes are not aware that they have the condition. While exact numbers are not available, it is likely that the number is lower for Veterans receiving regular VA primary care. However, many Veterans of all ages are at risk for diabetes because of the high rate of obesity and those who are overweight, estimated at over 70 percent of Veterans receiving VA care.

“About one-in-four persons with diabetes are not aware that they have the condition.” Weight Loss and Physical Activity

An individual does not have to achieve drastic weight loss. Losing about five percent of one’s weight will help. In recent studies, a weight loss and exercise program was more effective than medication in both younger and older individuals. The medication was not effective in persons older than 60. The VA’s MOVE! Weight Management Program is available to all Veterans who are overweight or obese and for whom weight management is appropriate. It supports Veterans in developing plans that work for them to lose or maintain weight through balanced diet, physical activity, and behavior change approaches.

For the MOVE! program to be tailored to the individual’s needs, the Veteran can complete a 23 item questionnaire. More information is available at www.move.VA.gov. MOVE! is available in multiple convenient formats including group sessions, telephone-based care, and a new home messaging program called TeleMOVE! which uses the telephone line, provides daily support, and is interfaced with a scale for weekly home weigh-ins. Talk with your Primary Care Team about MOVE! Although the focus is to identify individuals at higher risk for developing diabetes, it is important to remind persons who already have diabetes of the importance of weight loss and physical activity in managing diabetes. Additionally, persons with diabetes or at risk for diabetes should manage other conditions, such as hypertension or high lipid levels, appropriately, and if they have diabetes, they should be screened at regular intervals for early signs of kidney, foot or eye conditions.

Diabetes and Agent Orange

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is one of the diseases VA presumes is associated with exposure to herbicides, such as Agent Orange. Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange do not have to prove a connection between their type 2 diabetes mellitus and military service to be eligible for VA benefits. It may be the loss of loved ones, canceled weddings or special events, feeling disconnected LinkedIn from friends and family, and even perhaps missing out on the experience of “memorable moments” such as a last year of high school and college. As I began my research attempting to identify a famous female in history in the medical field, I came across famous women in science. Among the list was Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. I was quite familiar with Kübler-Ross from my studies as well as my professional practice; however, I never truly immersed myself in learning about Elisabeth the person, and not just the infamous psychiatrist and journalist. Elisabeth Kübler was born on July 8, 1926 in Switzerland. She was the middle of three children. Elisabeth had a desire to become a doctor at a young age. Elisabeth’s father was not in support of her vocational goal; however, Elisabeth forged ahead and went to medical school, graduating in 1957. Elisabeth attempted to obtain a position in the medical field, but due to the time period, females were not recognized candidates for such roles. Elisabeth was a positive and driven woman and became a member of the International Volunteer Service for Peace, helping “ravaged” communities after World War II. Elisabeth worked in a concentration camp and observed many carvings of butterflies on the walls in the caves where prisoners were left in the final hours of their lives—a symbol that Elisabeth would later identify and describe as a “transformation” from life to death. It was through this experience that Elisabeth began the focus of her work in the area of death and dying. After medical school Elisabeth married Emanuel Robert Ross and they relocated to the United States. Elisabeth and Emanuel had two children (Kenneth and Barbara). Elisabeth worked in New York, Colorado and Chicago. Elisabeth was known to have been “appalled” by the unfair treatment of terminally ill and elderly patients. She took the time to talk with the patients and invested herself to care for them through their “transformation” to their next life. Elisabeth provided lectures with dying patients in an effort to destigmatize death. It was Elisabeth’s goal for patients to be afforded the respect and dignity to share their fears, concerns and end-of-life transition. In 1969 Elisabeth published her first book, entitled On Death and Dying. The book explains the stages of grief as a pattern of adjustment with no defined sequence. The stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The book has become required reading for most major medical, nursing and psychology programs. The ability to understand our emotions and feelings of grief provides a validation and acknowledgment that what we are feeling is truly real. The book details the aspects of death and dying and enables society to better understand the process of transition. Throughout Elisabeth’s career she has published 24 books, which are available in

34 languages. She has approximately 49 awards of recognition from the UK to the USA! In the 1980s Elisabeth settled on a 300-acre farm in Virginia and as its president developed “Healing Waters,” a healing and workshop Medium.com center. Over the course of Elisabeth’s career, a career that was “discouraged” by her father, Elisabeth served in administrative roles that have included psychiatrist, educator, chairman of the board, medical director, acting and associate chief of psychiatry, and president of her own healing center. Elisabeth has earned 20 honorary degrees and has an impressive teaching resume that includes instruction to over 125,000 students on the subject of death and dying. Elisabeth settled into retirement in 1996. During Elisabeth’s own “transition” she was frustrated with the inability to control her own metamorphosis. Elisabeth grew her wings on August 24, 2004 at the young age of 78. She made a significant impact in the medical field on the subject of death and dying due to her courage, determination and vision, which enabled her to give a voice to those who were not being heard. Elisabeth has shown humanity that the ability to “embrace life is through death.” On the EKR Foundation eulogy, it was quoted that Elisabeth was referred to as the “death and dying lady”; however, Elisabeth referred to herself as the “life and living lady.” I close with a final message from Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross: “The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.” (Death: The Final Stage of Growth, 1975) Even though we may be experiencing some aspect of grief during this time, understand that it’s okay, and remember we must not forget to live!

Meet Laurie Zaleski, Owner Of The Funny Farm Rescue Laurie, Owner, pictured with Yogi and Farley Photo by Amanda Werner

A truly remarkable, accomplished, self-determined, and inspirational woman living in Southern New Jersey is Laurie Zaleski. Laurie Zaleski’s mother, Anne McNulty, rented a home for 28 years while working for an animal control service and raising 4 kids on her own. Anne would save every animal she could that once faced no hope. She called it her “Funny Farm” because most of the animals were misfits but she loved them just the same. Laurie would watch her mother struggle to pay rent, buy food, make ends meet, but still show incredible compassion to animals that no one else wanted. She told her mom that someday, she’d buy her her own farm where she could save as many animals as she wanted. In her early 20’s, Laurie worked at Campbell’s Soup as an illustrator while attending Rowan University studying photography and graphic design. Soon after graduation, she established Art-Z Graphics, a successful photography and graphics company, contracting to the Federal Aviation Administration and Selective Service System for nearly 30 years. Young Laurie Zaleski purchased a run-down rental property for her mother in Mays Landing, NJ with 15 acres and a barn but sadly, her mother passed away from cancer just two weeks before the purchase of the property was completed at just 52 years of age. Devastated at her mother’s loss at such a young age, Laurie took on her 30 animals and faced a future alone and uncertain. Each day brought new challenges and the learning curve was immense. With the help of her sister and brother and a few friends, she fixed up the property and the Funny Farm she had once known with her mother, had a new home, a permanent home. Fast forward 20 years. Volunteers and visitors came from miles away! People told their friends! Some made significant contributions. Today, there are over 600 rescued animals all living the best lives possible at the Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, most roam free. In honor of her mother Anne McNulty, who’s ashes are buried at the farm, and having no money growing up, Laurie decided that the Funny

Farm would always be free so anyone could come and love the animals, even if they had nothing. Later, when feeding bills exceeded $4000/mo, Laurie’s Funny Farm became a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity. Under the leadership of Laurie Zaleski, and her incredible team of volunteers and supporters, The Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary has become one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the USA. True to her word, admission has always been free. People come from all over the world to see animals that no one else wanted. Today, they live the lives of celebrities through social media and their stories inspire millions. Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary has earned many awards including the Top 10 places to visit in New Jersey. Personally, Laurie Zaleski has earned the NJ Heartland Hero award in 2017, Who’s Who Hero Award of Professional Women 2019, and been inducted into the NJ Veterinarians Animal Hall of Fame, 2018. Laurie was also awarded the Founders Live Girl Power Award as one of the Top Five Women Entrepreneurs in the Northeast. Active in her local community, Ms. Zaleski has her own Kindness Program, which includes teaching about anti-bullying and special needs in schools on Fridays with several of her friendly animals to show how different species interact with each other. Laurie demonstrates to children that we can all get along despite our differences. She also visits nursing homes and inspires everyone to never give up! Likewise, she has co-created three of a planned ten children’s books on anti-bullying and special needs. Another one of Ms. Zaleski’s projects involves a film titled, “Chuck, A Funny Farm Story” about her inspirational dog who has special needs and sits upright in a chair in order to eat. Her film, produced by Glasstown Productions, has already won numerous awards at film festivals. Another part of Laurie Zaleski’s mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by increasing the awareness of animal abuse through education. Her knowledge, expertise and facilities make her truly unique in southern New Jersey and the surrounding areas. Laurie is truly a unique and inspirational woman of our time.

The Benefits Of Meditation

P

eace is often associated with yogis and monks sitting alone in a far-off place, cave or monastery, praying and meditating all day long. To some it may seem like a mystical concept or something elusive, wondering how do we, in a world of high demands—pandemics, social distancing, relationship and financial pressures; where battling life and people situations, concerns and restlessness exist—find peace? The truth is, peace of mind can be attained and enjoyed even in the midst of the chaotic, stressful conditions and circumstances of life. Meditation is essential in offering healthy benefits to help us focus and eliminate negative thoughts, worries, anxiety and other factors that can cause havoc in our overall health and well-being. It has been proven that the practice of meditation, carried out on a regular basis, will mitigate the symptoms of stress and anxiety and support beneficial health. Everyone can do it, and benefits can be seen after just a few minutes.

Dr. Nina’s What You Need To Know: About the Health Benefits of Meditation What is meditation? The calming of the mind. Meditation is when we refocus our attention away from everything else in order to achieve a relaxed state of being, inner peace and balance. It isn’t about not having thoughts; it is about not being attached to your thoughts. There is a saying: “Meditation is like a gym in which you develop the powerful mental muscles of calm and insight.” In doing so, it can enhance our overall well-being, creative thinking, perspective, and ability to cope with stressful situations.

Are there different types of meditation?

Yes. Meditation is used as a catchall term for the many ways we can achieve mental and physical relaxation.

While there are many types, most share these elements: • A quiet location with minimal distractions • A comfortable position—sitting with legs crossed, lying down—in our home or garden or favorite chair • Concentrating in order to cut out all distractions—focusing on a word, a key teaching or saying, an object, our breathing • There are also forms of “moving meditation” such as yoga or tai chi that incorporate gentle movements

When is a good time to meditate? One of the beauties of meditation is that we can make it as formal or informal as we like, and thereby adapt it to our needs. While not for everyone, there are centers, groups and classes that are led by trained instructors to teach us advanced techniques. And because meditation does not require equipment or formal training, it can be done on our own, at any time. So whether we are at work, sitting on an airplane or train, ready to go to sleep, or just feeling anxious or stressed, all we need is a few minutes to achieve our inner peace.

How can I meditate in just a few minutes?

Take a few minutes in the morning or evening (or both), rather than turning on your phone or going online, and see what happens if you try quieting down your mind, or at least paying attention to your thoughts and letting them go without reacting to them. If the research is right, just a few minutes of meditation should make a difference. When on the go, slow down the pace and focus on each movement and be “in the moment” instead of racing through every demand on your neverending to-do list. If we have a faith we follow, consider engaging in prayer, praise or a spiritual precept, the most widely practiced example of meditation. It can be saying or reading our own words or verses, or listening to sacred music. And yes, today there are apps that can help you with meditating. Through meditation you will get your personal “weather” forecast on situations (which can range from sunny and bright to gloomy with storms). And often with meditation you can break away from the racing thoughts of your environment to better understand any source of conflict that is troubling you.

Can meditation help me decrease the stress I deal with?

Absolutely! We know when stress becomes chronic and is not properly managed, it can injure our mind, body and spirit. It can interfere with our enjoyment of life and relationships and our work. That being said, we also know that relaxation is the opposite of stress. Meditation decreases the release of stress hormones—adrenaline and cortisol— and changes the frequency and amplitude of our brain waves. Meditation

Social Distancing -Alone Together We are living in times that have never been experienced before. In the past century, there have been just four pandemics. The last one was in 1918. Life, as we know it has been put on hold. Events cancelled, school is now in a virtual landscape, and undoubtedly someone you know has been affected by this disaster. Thanks to modern technology, we are still able to connect with our friends and loved ones either through a Google hangout, Zoom, or House party. In dark times, it is more important than ever to be a beacon of hope for your friends and family. Families all over the nation are spending more time together than they have in years. With the absence of full calendars, practices and other after school activities, there is more time to connect. When this time passes (and it will) most of us will come out better for it; more spiritually connected and definitely closer to our loved ones. Although there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, the best way to prevent the spread is to avoid being exposed. Those who are in close contact with one another, usually within six feet, spread it from person to person. Respiratory droplets are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly inhaled in the lungs. Another silver lining

is that once you have contracted the virus it is unlikely you can get it a second time. Health officials have said that coronavirus antibodies are able to prevent a person who had the infection from getting it a second time. The best course of action at the present time is to minimize your chances of contacting the virus. We can do that in the following ways: • Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place. • You can use a hand sanitizer (if soap and water are not readily available) that contains at least 60% alcohol. • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands • Sneeze into your elbow • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily – this includes doorknobs, light switches, keyboards, and phones.

It is easy to feel helpless during times like this. One way to alleviate those feelings are to try and help where you can and right now our nation is facing a major shortage in blood donations. Donating blood is essential to the health of a community and the need right now is dire. The Red Cross has expressed concern over future blood shortages. If you can, give blood so they can maintain a sufficient blood supply for the weeks to come. Never have we been given this respite from our daily schedules. The stress and anxiety from the unknowns can be daunting. Try and take some time for self-care and making yourself a priority during the days ahead.

Animal shelters and rescue groups appreciate the public’s support, as do the many pets that are fortunate to find forever homes.
