Are Dental Implants Right For You? If you are self-conscious because you have missing teeth, wear dentures that are uncomfortable or do not want to have tooth structure removed to make a bridge, then dental implants may be the solution for you. Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. There are 3 phases to getting an implant: • Have the implant surgically placed in the jawbone. • Wait for the bone around the implant to heal and the implant to integrate with the bone, which may take several months. • The final step is to have your dentist place a crown on the tooth.

There are many advantages to getting implants. They are the next best thing to natural teeth, they are built to last, they protect your healthy bone, they keep your teeth in place and they protect your healthy teeth. The disadvantages of dental implants are that they are expensive and may not be a good solution for patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or who have tissue that is incompatible with implants. Also, tobacco use may slow the healing process. If you are interested in implants, come in to DS Dental and discuss it with Dr. Spano. If you are in good general health, this treatment may be an option for you.

Birth Control Choices, Voices And The Like Birth control has come a long way, baby! Today’s birth control is not what your mom used. The prevention of pregnancy has evolved into a science in its own right. These advances can be confusing, overwhelming, and intimidating. This is compounded by the “parent factor.” Our children are becoming teenagers. For those who were teens in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, this is a scary thing. But times were really different then. And we are parents now. Hence the “parent factor.” This issue is far-reaching, touching moms, dads, and kids alike.

Birth control or contraception comes in many different forms. This is a brief overview of the options for use currently. • The Barrier Methods consist of condoms, diaphragms, and cervical caps, and we can throw sponges into this group. Most of us are familiar with condoms. These come in many colors, sizes, and shapes. The failure rate is higher due to misuse or incorrect use by the patient. • Birth Control Pills are usually made up of estrogen and progestin medications. These require a patient to take a pill on a daily basis. Periods can be planned using the pill. There is the availability to have a 3-day or 7-day period, or a period every third month. Here a woman has a choice as to when to have a period and how long of a period to have. There are no health issues related to this. There is even a chewable type of birth control pill for those with trouble swallowing even a small pill. • Next is the Vaginal Ring. This is a medication-containing plastic ring. It is placed into the vagina. It remains in the vagina three weeks out of the month. At body temperature, it releases birth control medication. No remembering to take a daily pill. Good choice for those who have difficulty with the pill. It is held in place by the vaginal tissue and may be taken out for sexual activity at the discretion of the patient. • There are long-acting reversible contraceptive medications for those needing or wanting long-term but reversible birth control. Intrauterine devices are

placed into the uterus by a qualified health care provider. Mirena® (Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc.) is a medication-containing IUD. It has a 5-year lifespan. About 30% of women have a light period (spotting) or no periods at all. For most this is a nice benefit. This should be used in women who have had a vaginal delivery. Skyla® (Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc.) is a baby Mirena. It is a smaller, more compact version of Mirena. It is made for women who have not had a vaginal delivery. The smaller size makes it easier to insert and remove. Paragard® (Teva Women’s Health, Inc.) is a copper-containing IUD. It has a 10-year lifespan. Most patients with this type of IUD experience a heavier period. • Injectable Birth Control is used frequently. This involves a shot every 90 days. This is also a great way for those who have issues with taking a pill every day. This type of contraceptive can be used up to two years in a row. • Permanent Contraception for women is either a tubal ligation or tubal occlusion procedure. The fallopian tubes can be blocked by cutting, tying, or blocking with a coil. This method is meant for irreversible contraception. Yes, ladies, there is a procedure for the men in your life. This is a vasectomy. Prevention of unwanted pregnancy is a real concern for many women in today’s world. All of the above options are available for safe, effective pregnancy prevention methods. Modern medicine has given our modern-day women a vast array of choices. For women already on oral contraceptives, be aware that certain medications, such as antibiotics and anti-seizure drugs, may lessen the effectiveness of your birth control. If there is any question, use a back-up method such as a condom. Feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns. We will be glad to help.

Note

Welcome to the March/April Issue of The Atlantic County Woman Publication!

As I write this, I am comforted in the knowledge that spring will officially begin this year in 35 days. That seems like a long time, but we will soon be enjoying the longer days, warmer breezes and bright colors of spring! What a welcome change from the cold snaps and wet weather we have endured this past winter. This changing of the seasons also gives me the opportunity to reflect on the growth and importance of the Atlantic County Woman. After all of these years, the Atlantic County Woman remains the go-to resource for all of the many things that we have going on in our daily lives. I am astounded at the abundance of information that our topic experts provide to our readers in Atlantic County. It has proven to be a fantastic knowledge center for myself and for the numerous people who have asked me whether “I know someone” who may be of assistance for their needs. I simply had to point them to the Atlantic County Woman, and they were able to quickly learn about their topic directly from one of our provider experts in an engaging and educational format so that they could follow up directly with that business. So, as we eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring, take the opportunity to learn about a new topic or find that skilled expert professional that you have been seeking in the areas of health, finance, fitness, law, med-spa, fashion, beauty, insurance, home improvement, and much more! Throughout this issue, you will find important information that impacts many aspects of your daily life. For instance, on page 8 and 9, you will find information about new technology for laser tattoo removal. Suffering from allergies? Look on page 30 for more information on how compounding medications can help you survive this allergy season. Spring is right around the corner and what better way to prepare your home for the warmer temperatures then redecorating. Visit page 26 for some interior design tips on how to spruce up your home. We’re sure you’ll find every article in this issue of the Atlantic County Woman brimming with valuable information. When a particular article is helpful to you or your family, take a moment to visit, call, email, tweet or Facebook the business to let them know! Best, Chris Lam & The Staff at the Atlantic County Woman Publication

nyone who knows me will confirm that I am a very proud dog owner of two German Shepherds. Maybe even a little too proud. After 40-plus years of living, I got my first dog, Dakota, in January 2014. She quickly became the love of my life, so much that I became the proud owner of another German Shepherd, Shiloh, later that July. Never before had I understood the amazing bond between a dog and a human. Ever since I was a very young child, I’ve had cats. I still have one cat, as a matter of fact, but the difference between owning a cat versus owing a dog is something I have truly never understood until I became a dog owner. Owning a cat is like…well, it’s pretty much a nonevent; whereas owning a dog (or dogs)…there are no words that can describe how rewarding an experience it is. My point here is not to offend all the cat-lovers out there, but rather to bring to the forefront how dogs become real members of the family and special considerations need to be given when a family is breaking up and the parties cannot agree on where the dog(s) will reside. This newly found passion of mine has added a new perspective to how I handle my divorce cases where there are dogs involved. Over the years the issue hasn’t come up too much in my practice but recently I have been hearing a lot of stories from my colleagues who have been facing dog “custody” issues. Additionally, my research on this issue has revealed that proponents of animal legal rights have been working hard to change the way courts treat animals. Traditionally, in most states, animals have been treated as chattel, meaning property. They would fall into the same category of: Who gets the dining room table? And, What about the living room furniture? Believe it or not, cats and dogs for a long time were thrown into the “personal property” category. Family courts especially have generally applied principles of property law when deciding who gets Fido, though some judges have recognized that the family companion should not be treated the same as a couch. However, it varies all over the country as well as in the State of New Jersey.

There was a very interesting case from 2009 in New Jersey that dealt with an unmarried couple who had a long-term relationship of 13 years who were engaged to be married, but decided to break off their engagement. During the relationship, together, they purchased a pedigree dog for $1,500, which they registered with the American Kennel Club as joint owners. Initially after their split, there seemed to be an agreement between them that ex-girlfriend would keep the dog because she, in fact, kept it and ex-boyfriend did not challenge her. But when she went on vacation and left the dog with ex-boyfriend while she was away, upon her return, he refused to give her the dog back and suit was filed. The trial court found that while there was an oral agreement between the parties that ex-girlfriend would keep the dog, because the dog was still in the possession of ex-boyfriend at the time of trial, the judge awarded the dog to ex-boyfriend and awarded ex-girlfriend $1,500 since the parties agreed that was the amount it cost to purchase the dog. Apparently, the judge presiding over the case stated at one point, “Dogs are chairs; they’re furniture; they’re automobiles, they’re pensions. They’re not kids.” Thankfully, ex-girlfriend appealed the court’s ruling to the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey. The Appellate Court found that monetary damages were inadequate due to the special subjective value one derives from possession of a particular piece of property: in this case, a dog. The Court further stated that courts of equity should not be hesitant to consider one party’s sincere affection and attachment to a particular object, which includes family heirlooms, inanimate objects, and of course, animals. In other words, while the Court still held that while a dog is technically still a piece of property, it is unique property with special value and should be treated as such when one owner seeks judicial intervention to decide who gets to keep the pet. When dealing with a divorce that involves dogs and school-aged children, oftentimes the unofficial rule of thumb is to have the dogs follow the children. In other words, when the children change residences to spend time with the other parent, the dogs should be included. And in the majority of situations, including my own personal situation, this is a good practice to follow. Just as children should not be deprived contact with the other parent, dogs shouldn’t either. Going through a divorce when there are dogs involved shouldn’t be ruff. Don’t paws any longer and call me now for a consultation.

Number of Treatments Required and Results

People often ask how long it will take to remove their tattoo, and will it be able to be removed completely. Laser tattoo removal typically takes multiple treatments. That is because tattoo ink is deposited deep into the skin and multiple treatments are needed to reach all of the ink and break it up completely. In addition, tattoos of various sizes, colors and ages may respond differently to treatment. Some colors are more difficult to clear completely than others. Therefore, it is impossible to know in the very beginning how many treatments will ultimately be needed or how completely it will be removed. However, our new enlighten™ picosecond laser has been shown to be faster and more effective than the prior lasers used for tattoo removal. When would a Revocable Living Trust be appropriate?

In my practice, I utilize Revocable Living Trusts to: 1) Create Privacy: When people would prefer that others not be given the opportunity to see what their Wills say (because Wills are public records, recorded when probated, and Revocable Living Trusts are private family documents and not recorded); and 2) Avoid Ancillary Probate: When clients own real estate in states where probate is difficult, especially Florida (so that we avoid the need to probate the Will in NJ and then again in another state, which is required to transfer real estate only). Because State laws vary widely, it is important to work with a lawyer licensed in New Jersey, and because most lawyers are not familiar with the workings of trusts or tax law, a lawyer who specializes in estate planning.

Currently doctors are treating shoulder, knee, hip, and spine However, before considering going under the knife to have joint replacement surgery a new modality is gaining popularity and providing patients the opportunity to “regenerate” damaged joints. Regenerative medicine is a new and exciting field that is showing promise in reversing years of joint deterioration. Regenerative medicine utilizes the ability of the body to heal itself. The two most promising regenerative techniques that are providing chronic joint pain relief are platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell (ST) therapy. With PRP, whole blood is drawn from the patient and then spun down to a platelet rich plug. This powerful platelet plug contains a multitude of growth factors that when injected into painful arthritic joints can help regrow and regenerate years of damage. PRP therapy may be used to manage numerous injuries including muscle injuries (hamstring sprains, biceps and triceps injuries, calf and quadriceps injuries), ligament injuries (ACL, MCL, LCL sprains and tears of the knees), tendon injuries (Achilles tendonitis, rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis), patellar and quadriceps tendonitis), degenerative conditions such as arthritis (osteoarthritis), joint pain, degenerative disc disease, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, neck and back

While stem cell therapy may be appropriate for certain conditions, it is not applicable for every condition. However, it is has proven to be a viable option for several individuals suffering from pain. Good candidates for adult stem cell treatment usually are: • A patient that wants to avoid the inherent complications that come with an invasive surgical procedure • A pain sufferer that is interested in an option that offers potential for an overall improved quality of life • Every patient is different, the success of the stem cell therapy is dependent on the severity of your condition and your body’s response to stem cell therapy.

What Is Acupuncture?

cupuncture is a holistic medicine - it sees symptoms in relationship to the entire body, rather than focus solely on the symptoms, and it empowers the body to heal itself. It is a natural healing method that supports the body and addresses the root of the problem, not just the symptoms. It is very gentle and relaxing to receive, and has an extremely low probability of side effects. The purpose behind all acupuncture therapy is the achievement of balance - specifically the balance of the flow of Qi. Qi (pronounced “chee”), or vital energy, flows throughout the body.

Symptoms are seen as imbalance in this flow, and the correction of the imbalance is reflected in good health. The Qi flows in pathways throughout the body. Each pathway runs on the skin surface and is accessible via acupuncture points, and also runs deeply into the body and connects to the internal organs. The pathway brings the treatment from the superficial level into the deeper levels. Acupuncture has been used for centuries as preventative medicine and to relieve acute conditions and chronic conditions, such as asthma, chronic pain, anxiety and

depression. Acupuncture also treats pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, inflammatory bowel syndrome, menstruation, fertility, menopause, and so much more... Over 2500 years old, it is a time-tested method of preventative care that speaks for itself. Acupuncture has been used to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health. Acupuncture treatments are done individually or community-style. Community acupuncture is practiced in a group, rather than a one-on-one setting. The treatments are primarily on the front of the body and mainly on distal points (legs, arms, hands, feet, ears, head). Community-style clinics are more affordable so you can get the amount of treatment you need in a shorter period of time. The idea is to make acupuncture accessible and affordable!

“Shopping isn’t always easy for me. I often have trouble with fit but Seagrass Boutique offers a large assortment. The owner, Kevin Heck, has great taste which shows in his selections at his Linwood and Ocean City locations but he also has an incredible eye and is honest with his clientele. Kevin would prefer you walk out of the store empty handed than dress someone in something that didn’t look or feel right. However, this rarely happens. At Seagrass you don’t just get a quality piece of clothing, you also get help putting it all together. Being comfortable, styled and confident is always worth it. That’s what you get at Seagrass Boutique.” - Forever a customer, Andrea Adams-Hughes

Q and A with Veterinarian Dr. Newkirk

Q

Spring is coming, is my pet really at risk for heartworm disease?

Heartworm, as the name implies, are worms that live in your pet’s heart! It is hardly healthy, as you might imagine, and potentially deadly. Heartworm is carried by mosquitos and is endemic (meaning it’s always here) in New Jersey. The main problem is, there are NO symptoms of this disease until the heart has already been damaged! For dogs, infection eventually leads to congestive heart failure with symptoms of coughing and trouble breathing. At this point, heart damage is NOT reversible. For cats, heartworm can lead to sudden death with no symptoms. Treatment for heartworm disease is dangerous and can lead to death. As the worms die, they are swept along by the bloodstream into the lungs, where they can act like a giant blood clot, causing allergic reactions and severe complications. In addition, the treating drug is in short supply now, and it may not be available. We cannot use this drug in cats as the drug has severe side effects, so in essence there is NO treatment for heartworm disease in cats. Fortunately, there is a preventive medication that the pet takes once a month. I remind you, it only takes ONE mosquito, and so every time you walk your dog, the dog is at risk. For cats that go outside, even “on the porch,” they are also at risk. For dogs, now there is an injection called Pro Heart. This is a shot given once every six months; so then you do not have to give the pills at all. This is not available for cats. Spring is a wonderful season, but it can turn deadly. Make sure your pet is tested and put on medication to prevent this potentially deadly disease.

Q

My veterinarian performs a “combo test” every spring for heartworm and tick diseases. What are these tick diseases and what do they cause?

Yes, we also do the “combo” test, as we refer to it, for it tests for heartworm and also the three major tick diseases we see in this area: Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma. These are what are known as spirochete diseases, which are not bacteria nor virus. Many types of ticks carry them, and contrary to popular belief, Lyme is NOT just carried by deer ticks anymore! So just because the tick you found was not a deer tick, it does NOT mean your pet is OK. All three can cause joint pain and lameness, but Ehrlichia and Anaplasma can also cause blood cell problems, such as anemia and bleeding. For Lyme disease in dogs, there is a vaccine that does work fairly well in prevention. I say fairly well because 1) NO vaccine is 100% in all animals, all the time, and 2) this is a spirochete; it does not “behave” like most bacteria and viruses. This is also why many times we have to retreat the pet (and human) in order to kill the organism. The Lyme vaccine is much different from the human Lyme vaccine that was out several years ago. This seems to be because the organism “behaves” differently in humans vs. dogs. These spirochetes do not seem to infect cats, but why, we do not know. Using good quality tick control products is mandatory. Beware the imitators sold in many pet stores. Insects develop resistance as the years go by, as we know, and it appears, in my opinion, and in the opinion of many clients, that the older products are not working as well anymore. Nexgard is a new compound that is also taken orally in a flavored chew cookie. Ticks are very susceptible to this compound. It is also important to understand that NO tick product keeps ticks off the pet!!! They must bite the pet to get the tick-killing compound. But we also know now that it appears that the tick needs to be attached for several hours before the spirochete is transmitted from the tick to the dog, and that the new compounds kill the tick before this occurs. Remember, NOTHING is 100%, but the above is the best we have to combat ticks and the diseases they carry.

Care Management Resources For Seniors

Professionals Who Can Help You Decide What’s Right For You

By Maryann Prudhomme, RN Director, Bayada Home Health Care

There are many important decisions seniors will need to make in their lifetime. One of the most important is how to plan for future health care services and expenses, such as private duty home care. The options and decision-making process can be overwhelming, but, fortunately, there are many resources available to seniors and their families to help them make sound decisions regarding their care.

Aging Life Care Professionals

(also known as a geriatric care managers) Aging life care professionals specialize in advising and facilitating the appropriate care management of seniors. They can have experience in any number of fields related to care management, including nursing, gerontology, social work, or psychology with a focus on issues related to aging and elder care. Aging life care professionals can assist in areas such as: • Home care services: determining types of services that are appropriate for the client and helping the family to engage and monitor those services • Housing: helping families evaluate and select the appropriate level of housing or residential options • Social activities: connecting clients and families with activities to help them keep engaged and independent • Legal support: consulting with elder law attorneys or providing expert opinions for Permanent Makeup

court hearings determining level of care • Financial: overseeing bill payment or consulting with accountants or the Power of Attorney • Entitlements: providing information on federal and state entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid • Safety and security: monitoring the client at home, recommending security technologies, observing changes and potential risks of exploitation or abuse

Certified Senior Advisors

Certified Senior Advisors (CSAs) are trained to identify and accurately serve the complex and diverse needs of the aging population. They are professionals in an industry that serves seniors and have the certification through The Society of Certified Senior Advisors that qualifies them to advise seniors on health, social, and financial issues.

Certified Care Managers

Similar to CSAs, Certified Care Managers (CCMs) are health and human services specialists who act as guides and advocates for clients, as well as families who are caring for older relatives or disabled adults. Look for a CCM who is certified by the National Academy of Certified Care Managers (NACCM), or Commission For Case Manager Certification (CCMC). So you can feel confident that they are qualified to perform the full range of care management tasks.

Paying For Care

Every situation is unique, but here are some of the options for paying for home care:

What You Need To Know About MOLES Moles, or nevi, are skin growths made up of cells called melanocytes. The average person has fewer than 30-40 moles. Moles can be flat or raised and can range in color, and are primarily genetically determined, although ultraviolet (UV) exposure can play a role. ATYPICAL MOLES are unusual-looking moles, also known as dysplastic nevi. People who have them are at increased risk of developing melanoma. The higher the number of these moles someone has, the higher the risk. Those who have 10 or more have 12 times the risk of developing melanoma compared with the general population. Heredity appears to play a part in the formation of atypical moles. They tend to run in families, especially in people with fair skin. Those who have atypical moles plus a family history of melanoma have a very high risk of developing melanoma. People who have atypical moles, but no family history

of melanoma, are also at higher risk of developing melanoma compared with the general population. All of these high-risk individuals, as well as rest of us, should practice rigorous daily sun protection, perform a yearly skin examination head to toe with dermatologist, and report any mole that changes. The ABCDE rule of melanoma or skin cancer are guidelines to help determine if a mole is normal or abnormal. A is for asymmetry, B is for Border, C is for Color, D is for Diameter, and E is for Elevation and/or Evolving. Normal moles generally follow the ABCDE rules: they are symmetrical, have smooth borders, have uniform color, are smaller than a pencil eraser in diameter, and are uniformly elevated above the skin surface and not changing over time. A normal mole that suddenly breaks the ABCDE rules might be abnormal or atypical.

Feet First: Say Goodbye to Plantar Fasciitis If you’ve ever suffered from Plantar Fasciitis (PF), then you know firsthand about the debilitating and persistent pain it can cause. Described as feeling like you have a rock in your sock or a sharp pain in your heel, what makes the condition even more frustrating is that there is no instant cure. PF is considered an overuse injury and is defined as an inflammation of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a sheet of connective tissue, more like a ligament than a tendon, and stretches from your heel to your toes, spanning the arch of the foot. It is the area that keeps the arch of the foot from flattening completely when bearing weight and provides shock absorption when you walk or stand. Only time can make the inflammation in the fascia subside, but there are plenty of ways to treat the painful symptoms.

arch support and a cushioned sole are “quick fixes” for the pain. There are also certain types of stretches that address the problem and can definitely help to alleviate some of the discomfort. Toe stretches, calf stretches, and using the “towel stretch” have all been known to help. The towel stretch is done by placing a rolled-up towel under the ball of your foot and rolling your foot over it. You could also try doing Fact: this with a tennis ball. Additionally, many people This condition have found success with physical therapy. Because the inflammation of the fascia can cause weakness has been called in the foot as well as the ankle, exercising the area “Policeman’s Heel” with targeted exercises works to keep the tissues because it can stem strong. Most importantly, some of these exercises can prevent the PF from getting any worse. from too much time Another solution is to wear custom molded foot walking the beat. orthotics, which will offer support to the arches of the feet as well as the balls of the feet and heels. A podiatrist can order the orthotic to the exact measurements of your feet. The orthotic works by evenly distributing the pressure placed on the foot, Although common in runners, tennis players, For those who live with PF, it is the early morning and in effect will reduce the symptoms associated and practically anyone who stands on their feet when the pain is at its worst. Spring Decorating

Ava Cocchi grew

Written by: Ava Cocchi

As I’m writing this article, snow is lying on the ground, so it’s hard to imagine Spring is around the corner. But before we know it, we will be frantic to start our Spring cleaning. Besides the obvious, such as power-washing, retouching paint, and getting your carpets cleaned, there are tons of great techniques you can implement to create a more updated home.

This may seem obvious to some readers, but a lot of people are still hesitant to buy a houseplant because of the maintenance. However, they provide not only a natural element, but they lower your risk for illness while providing cleaner air and boosting your mood. There is nothing more beautiful than a fig tree, areca palm, or peace lily, but my favorite houseplant is the fiddle leaf fig because of its glossy, leathery foliage and its large size. Place this tree in a corner along with a beautiful woven basket and you have just made your home happier and cleaner. Which brings me to my next must-have for Spring: a beautiful, colorful woven basket. They are cost-effective and can truly be used for many things. Put one in your living room and fill it with magazines, or put blankets in them. I use them for pots for my indoor plants and have even put my kids’ sandals and sneakers in them to hide the clutter. Two home design changes that are pricier but leave a huge impact are redoing your countertops in your kitchen and placing trim in your downstairs. Marble is having a moment because nothing beats the classic natural beauty of marble. However, marble isn’t for everyone due to its dollar sign and high maintenance. If you want countertops that will be low maintance but still have the marble appeal, go for quartz, which is stain-, scratch-, heat- and impact-resistant. Lastly, trim is my favorite thing to put into a home because it instantly transforms the room and immediately makes the room architecturally interesting. Whether you like board and batten, shiplap, or just simple wainscot, this design impact will be worth the money you shell out.

elcome the first day of spring on March 20th with a visit to Barbara’s Boutique, where a sensational selection of this year’s popular styles and colors are already awaiting you! “Figure-flattering” fashions are the look this year, designed to fit your form well, rather than hugging you tightly or hanging loosely. This is also the year of flower power, with designs ranging from bold to delicate. You’ll see floral prints on crimson backgrounds, delicate abstract floral motifs and cutouts, multi-floral retro patterns, and more. My daughter was thrilled to see that the retro look is back, featuring the classic elements of embroidered floral art, maxi and midi length dresses, blouson tops, earthy tones, and fringing and tassels on dresses, skirts, tops, jackets and accessories. The spring color scheme is quiet and minimalist, consisting of soft, cool hues blending with warm tones. Topping the list of popular colors this season is aquamarine, followed by scuba blue, lucite green, strawberry ice, toasted almond, tangerine, masala, glacier gray and custard. This soothing color pallet may reflect a growing trend toward taking breaks from the hustle and bustle of daily life by creating technology-free “quiet zones” in which to unwind and reflect. For some of us, the best way to unwind is with a shopping spree, especially at Barbara’s Boutique, where a friendly, professional staff makes your experience pleasant and stress-free. To make it even easier, I’ve started a shopping checklist for you! 3 Try on a Cartise line of fashion. It is designed for the woman who wants modern clothing that balances casual and career. The clothing is frequently described as young in spirit with a realistic fit - timeless, season-less, ageless and great for traveling! 3 If you are looking for bold bright colors and patterns, then Tolani will be drawing you in with their Indiana inspiration with Western modern influences and fashion, creating a collection of Scarves and Apparel. 3 You are going to love the large selection of Joseph Ribkoff’s incredible dresses, jackets and jumpsuits available at Barbara’s this Spring. If unique style and quality are high on your list of priorities, you’ll love this clothing! 3 Last but not least, put the finishing touches on your wardrobe with accessories from Barbara’s. Check out the fun and stylish jewelry as well as the great selection of belts in beautiful shades of Italian leather.

Revamp your closet this spring by mixing and matching items from your existing wardrobe with new pieces in the latest styles. Take risks – pair a floral top with a skirt dotted with a tiny geometric print. You can’t be sure what works for you until you try it! But one thing you can be sure of: you’ll find the perfect options in spring fashions at Barbara’s Boutique.

Get Slimmer and Healthier . . .

Introducing New, Affordable Mini-Group Hypnosis Sessions Hypnosis/coaching helps bridge -the gap between knowledge and action. If you’re overweight, you probably know what to do to get slimmer and healthier. You’re savvy about nutrition, know about (and have probably tried) all sorts of diets, and are aware of the importance of movement. But there’s a difference between “knowing” what to do and “doing” it. Hypnosis helps change your mindset, your relationship with food, and your unhealthy patterns – and instill smarter ones. Embedded behavior patterns – those things you do on automatic pilot, like grab for food when you’re stressed – are lodged in the subconscious part of your mind, the part that’s responsible for much of your behavior. Because hypnosis accesses that part of the mind, it’s easier to neutralize negative patterns and embed those that are more beneficial. Using this approach empowers you to: • Access your power and regain control of your life • Neutralize subconscious patterns / beliefs that prompt you to eat inappropriately • Feel satisfied with less food and enjoy healthier foods • Shed pounds and inches as you alter your relationship with food • Reduce cravings, emotional eating, nighttime eating, automatic eating • Discover and deal with triggers that affect your eating patterns • Consider what need, besides real physical hunger, you’re trying to meet with food

Mini-Group Sessions or Individual Sessions – Your Choice

This comprehensive program consists of four sessions, which offers the opportunity to deal with weight control from different vantage points. It’s never just about the food. The

Hypnosis For Women ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀

Weight Control Smoking Cessation Relaxation/Comfort Fear Release

program is geared to getting you on a healthy lifestyle path permanently. All programs include a 1½- to 2-hour initial session and three 50-minute sessions. Each session includes some discussion and the use of hypnotic techniques and tools. A Get Slimmer and Healthier Program Packet is provided, as well as a calming and motivational reinforcement CD, and instruction in self-hypnosis.

Mini-Group Sessions (limited to 4 women per group)

You’ll benefit from the support and encouragement of other group members who understand your challenges and celebrate your successes. You’ll recognize that you’re not alone in terms of your past struggles and will be moving forward with other women determined to do the same. These sessions are affordable for everyone. New groups are being scheduled for March and April. For more information on dates, cost, etc., email me at rhodak333@comcast.net or leave a phone message and mention the mini-group sessions. State your name, phone number, email address (or mailing address), and I’ll get information right out to you. These are limited in size, so sign up quickly if you’re interested.

Private Sessions

Private sessions are more personal, and suggestions and techniques are tailored to your needs. You may feel more comfortable disclosing information and sharing your thoughts during these one-on-one sessions. You’ll be relaxing in a cushy reclining chair and easily able to “release and let go.” Sessions can be scheduled according to your needs, with morning, afternoon, and evening appointments available. Allergies And Allergic Reactions

Can Compouding Help You?

Allergies are usually defined as an overreaction of the immune system to a foreign protein substance, also known as an allergen, that is eaten, breathed into the lungs, injected or touched. This overreaction causes coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes and a runny nose. Severe allergic reactions can result in rashes, hives, difficulty breathing and even death. Unfortunately, there are no cures for allergies. However, allergies can

be managed with proper prevention or treatment. For instance, if you have seasonal allergies, you may want to start taking your allergy medications leading up to that particular season. If you are already having an allergic reaction, get to your physician or local emergency room immediately so that the allergy can be treated right away with the proper medications. Here are some allergy facts from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America: • More Americans than ever before say they are suffering from allergies. It is among the country’s most common, yet often overlooked, diseases. • An estimated 50 million Americans, one in five, suffer from all types of allergies including indoor/outdoor, food and drug, latex, insect, skin and eye allergies. Allergy prevalence overall has been increasing since the early 1980s across all age, sex and racial groups. • Allergy is the fifth leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages, and the third most common chronic disease among children under 18 years old. • Nearly 400 Americans die each year due to drug allergies from penicillin, 200 deaths occur each year from food allergies and 100 die due to insect allergies.

Make your current medication in an allergy free form. For example, if you are allergic to a dye or filler in your manufactured medication, we possibly could make that medication without fillers or dye free. Make your discontinued allergy medication. Some manufacturers stop making certain medications from time to time. If you had an allergy medication you had been taking for years with success that suddenly became unavailable, we may be able to make that same medication for you in our compounding lab. Flavor your medication while still keeping it allergen free. Many flavorings contain sweeteners or dyes. If you are allergic to these products, it is very difficult to find a medication that smells and tastes good. In many cases, we can still flavor your medication with dye free flavorings and make your medication taste great!

Do Artificial Sweeteners Help with Weight Loss? Written By Barbara Greenling, DNP, MSN, APN-C

Do you drink diet soda, versus regular, thinking you’re doing your body a favor? Are you under the impression that artificial sweeteners are a healthier alternative, especially for weight loss? You are not alone. Recent statistics show that close to a third of Americans say they use artificial sweeteners daily. Typical examples include aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet), sucralose (Splenda), and stevia (Truvia, Pure Via). They’re all available in packets and are also added to soda, yogurt, and other foods.

But do these sugar substitutes actually help you lose weight? New research suggests they do not. In fact, these zero-calorie additives may have the opposite effect — and possibly even increase the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Researchers reviewed 37 studies that included a total of more than 400,000 people. But only seven were “gold standard” randomized controlled trials, which compared people who used artificial sweeteners with a control (placebo) for six to 24 months. Those studies found no clear proof that the fake sugars helped overweight people shed pounds. Perhaps a different approach to dropping the pounds is in order. Instead of focusing on replacing sweetness in your food and drinks, maybe re-training your palette to less – sweet alternatives would be best in the long run. For example, unsweetened iced tea is far more thirst-quenching and refreshing than the sweetened version. You may actually find you prefer it if given the chance! Start to experiment by leaving your comfort zone a bit and trying new ways to limit and enjoy your sweets. This is especially important if you are overweight so as to prevent bigger problems down the line. If, however, you’ve already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and you’re overweight, you should get started as soon as possible on a weight loss plan. It

is important to work with a medical professional or registered dietitian to help you figure out a plan that will work for you—a healthy meal plan, physical activity, and realistic goals will help you reach a healthy weight.

There are many advantages to losing weight (and not just diabetes-related ones):

• Boost your energy level • Lower your cholesterol levels (especially important for people with type 2 diabetes) • Protect your heart (also important for people with diabetes, since heart-related complications are very common) • Make it easier to control your blood glucose level As you may already know, losing weight can be a challenge, but don’t let that stop you. Do whatever you need to in order to stay motivated. It is the amount of calories we eat that contributes to weight gain. Make small changes. Learn portion sizes and reduce the amount of snacks in your day to reduce the total amount of calories you consume each day. Find cookbooks with healthier recipes using low-fat options. A Final Note on Weight Loss For some people, losing weight doesn’t help them have better control of their blood glucose levels, and that’s all right. They may need to use medications or insulin to keep their blood glucose level in the normal range, but they should also still eat healthy foods and increase physical activity. Everyone should strive for a healthy weight. Losing weight can help lower your body’s insulin resistance, but if it doesn’t help you achieve better blood glucose control, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed—or that you should give up. Losing weight and then maintaining a healthy weight are healthy choices for life—whether you have type 2 diabetes or not.

Seashore Gardens Living Center Why We Run

The English language has always fascinated me. Take the word, run, for example. You can run for office, run a temperature or even run a red light. It’s amazing how such a small word could have so many nuances. Of course, my favorite meaning of run is what we do with our feet. It has special significance for us here at Seashore Gardens Living Center.

Each spring, we put on our sneakers, and run for a good cause. On Sunday, April 29, 2018, we’ll be at the Seashore Gardens 5K Run & Health Walk, on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at Tropicana Casino & Resort. This annual fundraiser is dedicated to helping people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia—and providing much needed resources for their families. Why do we run? • We run to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia, which affects one in nine people over age 65. • We run to raise the funds for the services that make a difference. • We run because we can help people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. • We run to get a healthy dose of exercise, which in turn keeps us feeling great! Register online at http://seashoregardens.org/5K. There is no greater reward than making an impact in someone’s life—and we can do it together. Sincerely, Janice T. Cambron Executive Director

Crossroad for Angels: Helping Survivors Overcome Their Past Eve Cortes, founder of Crossroad for Angels, strives to educate, help and inform survivors of sexual abuse and incest. Her Story When I walked into my new apartment for the first time and saw the surreal view from the window, it took my breath away. I walked out to the deck and looked out towards the ocean and watched the waves flow back and forth. I was drawn to the ocean, the sound of the waves and the seagulls as they glided by. It brought me back. Back to a place I had spent years trying to forget. As a child I had always lived by the ocean; the sounds and smells of the shore always brought me back to the abuse. I knew my brother loved me, but was this love? It started off with small things like an innocent game of playing house. I was the mom and he was the dad. “This is what mommies and daddies do,” he’d say, demonstrating with my Barbies how they should kiss and touch. Eventually the toys went away and our game of house turned into him on top of me, touching me in the living room, not uttering a word. The silence was deafening. I knew this was wrong, but he was loving me. This was love. Someone loved me. One morning I went downstairs and saw my brother in the living room, where that awful green velvet couch was, that couch. I told him I wanted a new teddy bear. He told me that he probably couldn’t get me one on that particular day. That’s when I made my threat. If he didn’t get me the bear, I would reveal our secret to the world. He promised me he’d try. The next night, after I had fallen asleep, I woke up to screams. It was my mother crying and screaming for her son. The neighbor was over and had seen me come down the steps. She took me to her place and sat me down to tell me that my brother had killed himself. For years I blamed myself, but I have finally come to terms with the fact that this was all out of my control. One day I was watching my daughter, who, at the time, was four years old, and it hit me. I was her age when it started, and seeing how innocent and vulnerable she was helped me realize I was not at fault. I couldn’t have been, because I was once her. A million mistakes later and years of therapy have helped me heal. I still have eons of healing to do, but I am a great work in progress. I love my new apartment now. I embrace the past and have learned I cannot change it. Whenever I look out into the ocean and can see where the sky and water meet, I know there is something greater out there guiding me. What I experienced with my brother was not love, it was abuse. I know that now and the ocean no longer reminds me of the pain. It brings me hope. I have finally realized that the only way to forget was to remember...

stay to myself—all the time. If I am in a room full of people, it doesn’t matter—I am isolated from the inside out. I feel like porous rock with jagged edges that cut and menace. Bad things happen all the time and all around me, just because it’s me. These are the noxious elements of what gets through my constant, but inefficient defenses. The porous variety--reinforces and reenacts in my soul, all the pain, guilt and shame that I have come to know as simply just who I am. It’s always my fault—that, I fear will never change. I can sometimes intellectually put some layers of this horror into a different box, but I know that it’s only temporary and that my intellect is no match for any overwhelming and overruling emotion. The perpetuation of this pain continues to define me and rob me of my identity and all of my self-value. I try to escape, but the best I can do is to try and dissociate and let my defenses do whatever they can to numb the moment. It’s as if I’m not really here and all this didn’t actually happen to the real me who is now far away. It happened to that other me that I’m not part of anymore—at least for a brief moment. It used to be only sometimes that I would dissociate without trying. I looked forward to those episodes. Now however, like what ultimately happened to Mr. Hyde, the switch to dissociate occurs even when I’m not thinking about the abuse. I can get “stuck” there for very long periods of time. Even my defenses betray me and scare me. There is no sanctuary or safe place. There is nothing and no one whom I can truly trust— ever, least of all, myself. I scare me most of all now. The rage I contain and try to repress every waking minute can explode in fits of painful and permanent aggression, which is likely aimed at myself. It’s as if I dwell within “A House Divided” and I’m in constant conflict with ‘the other me.’ Suicide is always appealing and nearby. If I can’t control anything else, at least I can control that. How can I ever trust myself with all these adversarial struggles consistently going on inside me? I can’t! It’s exhausting and I dare not tell anyone. I didn’t tell anyone when it kept happening. When I finally told my parents, and the people in charge of things, those I thought I could trust, they didn’t believe me. They dismissed my nightmare and me as if it never happened. But it did happen, and more than once, and it happened to me. I know I’m not alone in this regard, but I was very alone when this happened and I’m now alone again. The reason is because in part, people I thought I could

trust to help me and support me did not, but also because I feel broken, damaged, worthless and defective---a pariah in my family and society. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it. The effects, results, consequences, sequelae, damage, devastation and ruination that commonly befall people young or adult, male or female, who experience sexual harassment and assault are variable based on numerous qualifying factors. The themes of fear, outrage, shame, helplessness, hopelessness, self-blame, anger, anxiety, depression and many physical symptoms all occur in one way or another ubiquitously. Societies that overlook, passively condone, dismissively sanction and promulgate attitudes and beliefs that sexual assault is there for the taking without remorse or recourse are all over the globe. Sadly, our country lacks leadership and political will or role modeling to eradicate these ‘horrendiomas’ permanently. The moral perspective, although by appearances, is ironclad, lacks the uniform enforceability for these demoralizing events to permanently cease for all and for “good.” Recent cascading reports, prosecutions and allegations have made these crimes in the shadows get the long overdue benefit of more light and public awareness. The outcry and mobilization of grassroots forces and legislative hype will hopefully translate to meaningful and lasting changes for all. These depictions are not intended to represent every aspect or emotion that the people who have experienced this form of egregious abuse go through. It’s a sampling of this harmed population that I’ve worked with over the last 30 years. There are many other facets and symptoms that these experiences can and do create. It’s imperative that these battered people are well understood, respected and helped. Unfortunately, the scope and form of this type of injury is too vast and too diverse to capture here. As such, to do this serious issue some justice, we will continue and conclude our review, including treatment options, in PART III.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PREVENT DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S Roberta Foss-Morgan, D.O. completed post-baccalaureate training in Pre-Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After which, she received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her internship and residency in Family Medicine was completed at the Virtua Health System. Dr. Morgan was Board Certified in 1995. In 2005, Dr. Morgan authored her first book, What Your Doctor Won’t Tell You About Weight Loss. Further training in European Endocrinology, Mesotherapy, Medical Weight Loss, and Intravenous Therapies has required extensive travel throughout the US and Europe. Dr. Morgan has appeared on CNN, Ch 3 KYW, Fox News and numerous other live TV and radio shows. She is a frequently requested lecturer to physicians and patients.

P

revious medical training taught us that no one could be diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease (AD) until they die and an autopsy is performed to study their brain. In my last two articles I have been writing about the most scientifically thorough explanation of what AD is and how to prevent it. Many are already a little concerned as they tell me that they are losing words, going to a room and not remembering what they needed, and experiencing other minor neurological blips. This brain fog is reparable. The latest scientific information is thoroughly and expertly presented in the recently released book called The End of Alzheimer’s ~ The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline by Dale Bredesen, MD of the Buck Institute for Research and Aging and UCLA’s Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research. In over three decades of research and more than 200 scientific papers, Dr. Bredesen explains the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration (loss of brain function). There needs to be a balance in your brain between synapse-preserving and synapse-destroying processes. Synapses are your brain’s way of connecting words and thoughts together in a comprehensible fashion. His initial protocol involved over 25 different interventions, which individually don’t make a big difference, but together can provide powerful synergistic benefits. Each intervention is tweaked over time by using blood tests, body measurements, brain imaging, and other protocols to measure the effects of treatment. Dr. Bredesen has since expanded the protocol and is in the process of making it available to the wider public with the help of doctors certified in the protocol through MPI Cognition. Cognitive decline is largely the result of three fundamental threats to your brain: inflammation; a shortage of brain-boosting nutrients, deficient or imbalanced hormones, need for other cognitive-supporting molecules; and toxic exposure. The book explains the 36 causes of AD. AD can exist in three distinct subtypes, thus each person’s treatment plan will be profoundly different. The ReCODE program illustrated in the

book teaches how to prevent and reverse early onset dementia and introduces you to the fact that no one should die from AD. ReCODE stands for reversal of cognitive decline and was published in Aging in 2014. A genuine new AD drug has not been approved since 2003, and the currently approved AD medications are ineffective in stopping or slowing the course of the disease. If there are 36 causes of AD, a few medications are not going to reverse or improve AD. Dr. Bredesen explains a typical day for most of those who get the AD diagnosis: work late, have late-night snack, now your insulin is sky-high while you sleep, awaken with just a few hours of sleep, start to get stressed as you contemplate your day, grab a sweet roll or doughnut, a large glass of OJ, a big slug of low-fat (not organic) milk in your coffee, the dairy and sugar will increase inflammation, ensure that you will become insulin resistant, and poke holes in your intestinal lining as a result of eating gluten for decades. Then pop your acid-blocking medication (read the package insert, only to be taken for 2-4 weeks), even though by reducing stomach acid you won’t be able to absorb key nutrients like zinc, magnesium, and B12, then you’ll take your statin and lower your cholesterol level below 150 and thereby increase your risk of brain atrophy (your brain is 60% fat and requires cholesterol to function). Then jump in the car, making sure not to get any exercise before work and minimizing vitamin D levels, being so busy limits interpersonal positive social interactions, then your blood sugar crashes mid-morning, no worries…just hit office pantry and have a chocolate-chip muffin. Then lunch. No time so you eat a sandwich with white bread, spongy saline-injected turkey with synthetic hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides. Or possibly you will have a mercury-laden tuna sandwich. Wash it down with diet soda. And possibly you will have access to a brownie, so you can get your trans fats and lower your healthful omega-3 fats. We will stop here because the rest of the day is similar. I will list SOME of Dr. Bredesen’s protocol that requires your participation and willingness to change. Make dietary changes, embracing healthy fats and acknowledging that the maximum amount of carbohydrates per day is 15 grams, aka three teaspoons of sugar. Don’t count calories. Rather, count the grams of carbohydrates you eat per day to help you understand how the typical American diet is filled with carbohydrates/sugar. Practice intermittent fasting. Try not to eat for 12 hours; e.g., 7pm to 7am. No food three hours prior to bedtime. If this is beginning to sound like the Atkins diet, yes, the idea is to get yourself into ketosis so you are a fat-burning machine. The problem with the Atkins diet was that it was filled with toxins, and this diet employs eating organically. Have your doctor test your homocysteine, hsCRP, B12, vitamin D, insulin, HgbA1C, estradiol, progesterone, free testosterone, free T3 and various other hormones, zinc:copper ratio, employ Lumosity and Posit Science computer games to stimulate your brain utilizing neuronal plasticity, optimize antioxidants and mitochondrial function, optimize sleep and gastrointestinal health. Incorporating the protocol will take time. Too many of my patients are visiting one or both parents in Alzheimer’s units of nursing homes. How very sad. And how fortunate we are to have Dr. Bredesen make prevention his legacy.

ReWalk™: Helping Spinal Cord Injury Patients Walk Again

A

ccording to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, there are an estimated 12,500 new spinal cord injury cases each year and approximately 276,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the United States today. When a traumatic blow impacts a person’s spine – from a car accident, a fall, sports or another injury – he or she may experience a variety of symptoms based on the location and intensity of the trauma, including paralysis, weakness, numbness, increased muscle tone and spasticity, neurological impairment and pain. For spinal cord injury patients who experience paraplegia, or impairment in motor sensory function of the lower extremities, a groundbreaking new device actually enables them to walk again. ReWalk™, a revolutionary new piece of technology, is a wearable exoskeleton that fits to a person’s body to provide motion and improve quality of life. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June 2014, the ReWalk was developed by Dr. Amit Goffer – an Israeli inventor who became a quadriplegic

after an ATV accident in 1997 – who based the technology on his own experience using mobility devices. With motionsensing technology and battery-powered, motorized legs powering knee and hip Gene L., ReWalker – photo courtesy of ReWalk motion, the ReWalk enables spinal cord injury patients to sit, stand, walk and turn. Patients wear an exoskeleton that is individually fitted to their body and a backpack with a computerized control system. To start moving, all the patient needs to do is subtly change his or her center of gravity by tilting the upper body. Continual body shifting causes the ReWalk to keep the legs moving, allowing the user to walk. The more the patient walks, the more he or she builds up the strength to walk longer distances. In addition to the user’s ability to stand and walk independently, clinical studies of the ReWalk show significant health benefits on both a physiological and psychological level. This data indicated improvements in cardiovascular health, loss of fat tissue, building of lean muscle mass, improved bowel function, increased endurance and even the potential to improve nerve function. A representative of ReWalk visited Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation in September 2014, shortly after the device was approved by the FDA, to introduce the new technology to the facility’s physical and occupational therapy teams. Seeing a live ReWalk demonstration had a profound effect on the entire staff, ultimately leading Rebecca G. using the ReWalk at to the decision to purchase a unit and offer it to the local Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation spinal cord community. Some Simple Weight Loss Strategies

F

or many of us, gaining weight is insidious, meaning it occurs in a gradual, subtle way, but has harmful effects. Being overweight is associated with a number of chronic illnesses and premature death, including heart disease, certain cancers, and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. Weight gain takes time; however, we often become frustrated when our attempts to shed those pounds are not successful, quickly. Recently a friend of mine told me on the phone that she had to lose 15 pounds by next month so she could look her best and fit into “that” dress as Mother of the Bride for her daughter’s much-anticipated wedding. I was concerned by what I thought was an overly ambitious and unsafe goal and asked her how she planned on doing it. She responded that she was going to do the “Master Cleanse.” My eyebrows raised and I strongly cautioned her against fad or crash diets and how they could be harmful. I did more research on her cleanse and found that there were a number of variations, but that it mainly consisted of consuming only water with lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Some versions included taking a laxative. And while it can help shed some weight, it did so by functioning like a diuretic, meaning you lost mainly water weight that would return quickly once you begin eating solid foods again. And, too, there were a number of reports of people landing in the emergency room from side effects such as dizziness and dehydration. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a healthy rate of weight loss is one to two pounds per week. If you are planning on losing weight, it is important to keep this in mind and set realistic goals. Weight gain often occurs gradually and subtly, and weight loss does the same. Here are some tips to lose that weight and keep it off.

home, or order a salad and appetizer as your meal. If eating at home, plate your food in reasonable portions (e.g., fist size for meat, half a baseball of pasta or rice) and avoid going back for seconds and thirds. 2. Cut liquid calories. Just one can of soda contains 150 calories, a glass of juice 130 calories, a glass of red wine 125 calories, a bottle of beer 150 calories, and a glass, two, or three of water ZERO calories. Additionally, when we drink our calories, it doesn’t typically provide satiety—the feeling of fullness—the same way that food does. If you enjoy a calorie-containing beverage, do so, but in moderation. If you drink a can of soda, wine, or beer a day or a few times a week, skip a day, or opt for half a glass or a smaller-sized can. And whenever possible, choose water. 3. Drink lots of water. Water fills up our tummies and, as a result, leaves less room for an insatiable appetite. In a study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, researchers found that drinking more water is associated with decreased calories, sugar, and salt consumption. Researchers interviewed 18,311 adults and found that those who drank 1-3 additional cups of water consumed between 69-206 fewer calories; 6-18 fewer grams of sugar; and 78-235 fewer milligrams of sodium. 4. Get your ZZZ’s. Poor sleep, generally speaking, means poor diets. We have hormones in our body that signal when the body is full and when the body is hungry. Ghrelin (sounds like “gremlin” without the “m”) makes our bodies want to eat; whereas leptin tells our bodies that we are full. They act in a see-saw fashion and counterbalance each other. A lack of sleep warps the way these hormones are released: More ghrelin, less leptin. This can significantly increase our appetite for high-calorie and highfat foods. And if that wasn’t enough, we also experience a reduction in our rational decision-making abilities. A sleepy brain appears to not only respond more strongly to junk food, but also is less capable of reigning that impulse in. And, of course, successful weight loss is usually accompanied by increasing calorie expenditure with physical activity. However, exercise cannot negate or wipe out the ravaging effects of a poor diet. If you are trying to lose weight, the key is to set reasonable goals and create a plan that you can stick with for a lifetime. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint.

Dr. Nina’s What You Need To Know About Some Simple Weight Loss Strategies That Are Tried And True:

1. Make small changes to what you eat. Whether we are at the grocery store, fast food restaurant, sit-down restaurant, or plating a homecooked dinner, research shows our portions are exploding compared to 20 years ago. This makes it easy to scarf down an extra 100-200 calories of food a day – and over time, those extra calories really add up. In one year, this can lead to a 10- to 20-pound weight gain! Pay attention to portions. When you order at a restaurant, ask them to pack half before serving the dish so you can take it

Rebecca Kolas, Certified Lice Technician and Owner, Lice Lifters of Ocean County

Rebecca Kolas is both a Certified Lice Technician and Owner of Lice Lifters of Ocean County in Toms River, which opened in August 2016 and serves Ocean, Monmouth and Atlantic Counties as the premier lice removal company. Since that time she has opened a second location, Lice Lifters Central Jersey in Hamilton which serves Mercer, Middlesex, and Burlington Counties. Rebecca was introduced to the Lice Lifters franchise when her two youngest children contracted lice. Trying over the counter and prescription medication, she was unable to conquer lice, which have become resistant to the harmful pesticides, chemicals and toxins contained in those products. Rebecca was then introduced to Lice Lifters as a customer and found that it was the only treatment that was successful, as well as safe and natural. A true believer of the Lice Lifters franchise and its product, Rebecca knew she wanted to deliver this service to the people of the Jersey Shore and to help others afflicted with unwanted head lice. She truly understands the needs and fears of her customers, having been a customer herself, and takes the time to educate and calm others during the stress of dealing with lice. Rebecca resides in Ocean County with her husband and five children. She has a strong passion for helping others, as she was a staff attorney for the nonprofit Ocean-Monmouth Legal Services until the company’s dissolution in 2014. Since that time she still engages in the part-time practice of law, but now devotes the majority of her time to her family and helping others at Lice Lifters.

A Summer for Showing Love While Doing Good on The Longest Day The winter’s freezing temperatures might have put a pause on many people’s extracurricular activities, but now that spring has sprung, the Alzheimer’s Association® is gearing up for an annual summertime fundraising initiative people across the country can begin planning for right now. They will be able to raise money for Alzheimer’s research, care and support while doing something they love to honor those who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The initiative is more than needed: Alzheimer’s has no cure. It kills more Americans than diabetes, and more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. But anyone can help put a dent in that statistic by dedicating the summer solstice, June 21, to becoming a part of the Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day®. It is a way for Americans to show their love for all those affected by Alzheimer’s, including those special someones who work endlessly providing care for those living with Alzheimer’s or a related disorder. It is also a time to show appreciation to the many researchers and volunteers who do everything they can to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and advance us closer toward finding the first Alzheimer’s survivor. The Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter encourages South Jerseyans to choose an activity (or even more than one) they love, or one loved by someone who’s living with the disease, form a team and spend the day participating in that activity. “It doesn’t matter what you do. Any activity is acceptable, like dancing, needlepointing, hiking, scrapbooking, playing cards — absolutely anything, as long as you’re doing something you love,” said Sue Wronsky, the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter’s The Longest Day consultant. “It’s such a fun way for co-workers, friends and families to get together on the same day — or even another day that works best for everyone on their team — and raise dollars for a cause they really care about.” Wronsky adds, not only is it is easy to register for The Longest Day, but team members do not even have to be in the same location. “They can register as an ‘Anywhere Team’ and participate in their team’s chosen activity from miles away, while still helping raise funds to help provide care and support programs to the estimated 85,000 people in South Jersey who are affected,” said Wronsky. Wronsky urges anyone who would like to become part of a global movement this June 21 to honor those living with the most common cause of dementia while helping to end the sixth-leading cause of death in the nation to visit alz.org/ thelongestday.org or email her at swronsky@alz.org. “Not only is it a great way to celebrate the life and the love people have for anyone who is affected by dementia, but it is a great way to welcome the impending summer, sharing immense joy and forever-memories between team members.”

About the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter: The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The Delaware Valley Chapter, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the local arm of the national nonprofit organization, with Regional and Branch Offices that serve 18 counties in South Jersey, Southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, providing programs and services to more than 294,000 individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder. The chapter’s Atlantic County Branch Office is located at 25 Dolphin Avenue, Building D, Ground Floor, Northfield, NJ 08225. More information about the Chapter and the disease is available at alz.org/delval or its 24/7 Helpline, 800.272.3900.

The Queen of Rock I was traveling for work, listening to the classic rock station on Sirius radio, when an announcement was made that a certain female artist was going to be a recipient of the “She Rocks Award” in 2018. I had never heard of such an award and as I listened further, the radio host, Anita Blackwood, shared the award’s significance to women in the music industry.

long before she was reunited with her musical passion and quit her position in the bank to join a band. Pat’s first band was known to be a “lounge band” by the name of Coxon’s Army, which was known in the Virginia area. When the band was about to break up, Pat Benatar decided it was time to return to New York. In 1975, in the wee hours of the morning of an open mic night at a bar called Catch a Rising Star, Pat Benatar had her moment in the spotlight—recognized immediately by the bar’s owner, who went on to manage her for the next 15 years! In 1978 Pat Benatar was introduced to guitarist Neil Giraldo, who was a member of an up-and-coming band. Pat Benatar reports on her website that Neil Giraldo was someone who “could match the same fire-power and someone who could inspire her.” Then, in 1979, In the Heat of the Night was recorded and it went straight to platinum. Pat Benatar divorced her first husband and married Neil Giraldo in 1982, and together they had two children. From 1979 into the 1980s, Pat Benatar released multiple albums with more hit songs, one after another. An image that was developed from a Halloween costume, Pat Benatar created her own edgy on-stage persona that included dramatic makeup, ever-changing hairstyles, tight-fitted bodysuits, spandex pants and stiletto heels. By 1984, Pat Benatar was nominated for 9 Grammy awards for the category of Best Female Artist and went home with a Grammy for 4 out of the 9 nominations. Pat Benatar is identified as the leading female rock musician of the 1980s. Pat Benatar was inducted into the Long Island Hall of Fame in 2008, which is where her roots began as a child. Although Pat Benatar was unable to attend the She Rocks Awards due to a case of the flu, as noted on her website, I am sure her presence was felt in the audience, and fans will continue to get to see her during her current music tour in 2018. Pat Benatar is an amazing female musician who continues to inspire female musicians with her energy, edgy persona and passion for music. From bank teller to rock-and-roll superstar Pat Benatar is evidence that anything is possible; you just have to hit life with your best shot!

★ ★ ★

The She Rocks Award recognizes women who “display leadership and stand out within the music industry.” Further, the She Rocks Award event unites the music industry, which includes but is not limited to musicians, artists, fans and media, all to celebrate women in music! Since I am not in the music profession, I was completely unaware that this type of award existed. As I researched the 2018 recipients, it was revealed that the award is only in its sixth year of celebration. This news was quite shocking to me as there have been many talented females in the music industry who have met the award criteria far longer than in the past six years! One recipient in particular has been a favorite female artist of mine since the early 1980s. My admiration grew even stronger for this artist when I was traveling in Los Angeles back in 1990, when my boyfriend (now my husband) and I had been on the LA freeway for hours and decided to take a detour off the freeway to a McDonald’s. We walked into the restaurant and as we sat and ate our food, we noticed this superstar enter into the McDonald’s with two children. After much discussion and disbelief that a real famous person would stop off into a McDonald’s, we approached her. We politely inquired if she was who we thought she was, and with a smile she looked up at us and said, “Yes, I am.” Who, you ask, is the mystery artist? It was the one and only Pat Benatar! We attempted to contain our excitement. Pat Benatar introduced us to the children she had with her as if we were simple acquaintances and not over-indulging fans. We modestly asked for her autograph and she instantly agreed. To this day I still have the napkin on which she penned, “Rock on, Rich and Rita” and signed her name! A five-foot-tall petite female with a mezzo-soprano voice that could break glass, she rocked the music industry with her energy and amazing talent. Pat Benatar was my rock and roll idol. I will never forget my sister’s 13th birthday celebration wherein the hit song “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” was played over and over until the early morning hours on a 45 vinyl record. Pat Benatar has always displayed great stage energy and had the cool-girl style every teenager used to identify themselves. Pat Benatar was born on January 10, 1953 with the name of Patricia Andrzejewski in Brooklyn, New York. Pat Benatar started her singing career during her school years. At the age of 19 Pat Benatar entered into college to pursue her magical talent and within six months dropped out of school to marry her high school sweetheart (Dennis Benatar) and relocate out of the area due to his military status. Pat Benatar had obtained employment in her new hometown location as a bank teller; however, it would not be

Adopt Your New Best Friend Today The incredible bond between people and their pets and the many benefits that pets bring to our lives is a celebration of how positively animals can influence our lives. Pets not only provide their owners with companionship, but also with several health benefits. They may help lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels and ease tension, anxiety and depression. When people come in contact with animals they tend to experience a general feeling of peace and wellbeing and are perceived as being more happy and healthy. Pet ownership increases the opportunity for exercise and socialization with other pet owners. The therapeutic value of animals for individuals in hospitals and nursing homes has also been documented. Children learn to be more nurturing and compassionate adults by being raised among animals. Taking guardianship of an animal that has been abandoned is a wonderful and fulfilling experience rewarded by unconditional love and companionship. Animal shelters and rescue groups appreciate the public’s support, as do the many pets that are fortunate to find forever homes. Kathy Kelsey Manager

AC Ballet Starts Their Spring Season With A West Coast Tour And Ends With A World Premier The Atlantic City Ballet heads to the West Coast with their production of Sleeping Beauty to begin their spring season. The company’s first west coast tour will include performances in Prescott, Arizona, Palos Verde and Napa Valley, California. Company Founder and Artistic Director, Phyllis Papa emphasized, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the company. We are so proud to be able to represent Atlantic City as its cultural ambassadors.” Once back on the east coast they’ll begin their local performances at The Strand Theater in Lakewood, with a performance of An Evening of Dance, which will feature three ballets including one set to Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland. The entire performance will be dedicated to former New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne who passed away last month. Then it’s back to Atlantic City for an April performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream and the world premiere of Romeo and Juliet in May at The Circus Maximus Theater in Caesars Hotel and Casino. “I try to create a new full length ballet every season and Romeo and Juliet is a ballet I’ve always wanted to choreograph. We always want to give our audiences something new and also something to look forward to.” according to Ms. Papa. Founded in 1982, by International Ballerina, Phyllis Papa, the Atlantic City Ballet is comprised of professional dancers from around the world and have earned national acclaim for their technical expertise and exuberant stage presence. Although their home base is in Historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, the Ballet has performed in theaters all along the east coast. Their repertoire of original works includes such classics as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake but Ms. Papa is most known for her innovative works such as Dracula, Caught Up In The Swing and her full length Carmen. Since its inception, the Atlantic City Ballet has served as one of the cultural treasures of New Jersey and continues a tradition of dance excellence for future generations of ballet audiences.
