Putting an End to Acid Erosion Sugar is not the only cause of tooth decay. High levels of acid in foods and drinks can be just as damaging. Acidic foods such as fruit, wine and soft drinks can erode tooth enamel, causing decay, sensitivity and discoloring. Does this mean you must eliminate these foods from your diet? The answer is NO, but the manner in which you consume acidic food and drinks can decrease the damage to your teeth. What is Tooth Erosion? When enamel, the protective surface of your teeth, wears away, it exposes the internal material called dentin. This leaves your teeth susceptible to plaque and bacteria which cause decay. Calcium is the key to building strong teeth, but exposing your teeth to acid can leach calcium from your enamel, causing it to break down.

Acid can come from many sources, which include: ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡

&arbonated drinks Wine &itric fruit or fruit juice &andy and sugar Stomach acid

Because it can lead to serious dental problems, it is necessary to recognize the signs of tooth erosion, such as sensitivity, discoloration, rounded teeth, transparency or cracks.

What &an <ou Do to 3revent Tooth Erosion? The following tips can help you to decrease the effects of acid on your teeth: t &BU XJUI NFBMT o JOTUFBE PG TOBDLJOH TBWF acidic foods for mealtimes to neutralize the acid by eating it with other foods; t 4JQ XBUFS BMPOH XJUI BDJEJD GPPET t 4BZ OP UP CVCCMFT o FYDIBOHF DBSCPOBUFE drinks with milk, water or tea; t 6TF B TUSBX o JG ZPV BSF ESJOLJOH DBSCPOBUFE drinks, sip them through a straw and finish the drink quickly rather than sipping throughout the day; t 8BJU CFGPSF CSVTIJOH o BDJE TPGUFOT UPPUI enamel, so brushing immediately after eating or drinking high-acid foods can cause damage. Are You Pregnant? We’re Here To Help!

“high riskâ€? pregnancy should anticipate more frequent visits as directed by their provider; these additional visits will help to better monitor both mom and baby. Keeping your prenatal appointments is the primary thing that you can do to help Fnsure an uneventful pregnancy and delivery. So, now you are pregnant and your mind is ÂżOOHG ZLWK PLOOLRQV RI TXHVWLRQV %XW WKDWÂśV RND\ \RXU KHDOWK FDUH SURYLGHU ZLOO EH PRUH WKDQ KDSS\ WR DQVZHU DQ\ TXHVWLRQV WKDW \RX PD\ KDYH 7KH\ UHDOO\ KDYH KHDUG PRVW RI WKHP EHIRUH +HUH DUH WKH PRVW IUHTXHQWO\ DVNHG TXHVWLRQV E\ WKH QHZ PRPV WKDW FRPH LQWR RXU RIÂżFH

:KDW LV WKH ÂżUVW WKLQJ WKDW , VKRXOG GR ZKHQ , VHH WKDW SRVLWLYH SUHJQDQF\ WHVW" The best thing to do is to call and schedule your first appointment with your OB/Gyn. Setting up your first prenatal appointment quickly insures that you will be getting the care you need for you and your baby. On your first visit to our office, you will be given the time to ask all of the questions that you might have with patience and reassurance. We will reinforce the importance of keeping all of your appointments with us.

:KDW LV WKH DQWLFLSDWHG VFKHGXOH RI SUHQDWDO YLVLWV" For a low risk, normally-progressing pregnancy, you should anticipate the following typical schedule: *Weeks 4-28: One visit per month (every four weeks) *Weeks 28-36: Two visits per month (every two weeks) *Weeks 36-delivery: One visit per week Some women with a chronic medical condition or a

:KDW DUH VRPH RI WKH WKLQJV WKDW ZLOO KDSSHQ DW P\ ÂżUVW SUHQDWDO FDUH YLVLW" Your first prenatal visit in our office will consist primarily of getting to know you and your partner. This will include getting as much of your family medical history as you can provide. The provider will perform a complete physical exam, including a pelvic exam. Vaginal cultures to insure no evidence of infection is present will always be done. Your questions will be answered and you will be given a prescription for prenatal vitamins as well as orders for a complete prenatal blood panel and an obstetrical ultrasound. We realize that the most important question you have is, “When will I have my baby?â€? An estimated date of delivery (EDD) will be given to you, and the excitement and the countdown to this wonderful time now begins!

:KDW DUH VRPH LPSRUWDQW WKLQJV , VKRXOG NQRZ DERXW P\ SUHJQDQF\" One of the most important things to remember is to keep all of your scheduled prenatal appointments. Monitoring your well-being and the growth of your baby on a regular, routine basis is the best way to establish that your pregnancy is progressing safely. Do not drink any alcohol! If you do smoke, now is the time to quit. Illegal drug use can have a catastrophic outcome for your baby. If these habits are a difficulty for you, please let the provider know so that information and help can be given to you.

It is best to assume that no medications should be taken during pregnancy; however, there are times when you may have no other option. In this case, make that call to our office and we will be sure to have a provider give you the best advice for you and your baby. There are certain medications that can definitely not be taken in the first three months (12 weeks) of pregnancy. It is best to let our providers make these decisions for you.

:KDW WR GR LI \RX DUH XQIRUWXQDWH LQ H[SHULHQFLQJ QDXVHD YRPLWLQJ RU K\SHUHPHVLV" This is probably one of the most prevalent symptoms of early pregnancy. Keep in mind that your body is changing in many ways and your hormones are raging with all of the demands of this new life forming. Although it is called “morning sickness, it can last all throughout the day for some women. In most cases, it lasts just a few weeks and by your second trimester it subsides and is gone. These symptoms, however distressful to you, do not mean that anything is wrong with your baby. Some of the best remedies for the symptoms of morning sickness are to: 1. Eat more small meals. 2. Avoid greasy, fried or spicy foods. 3. Avoid lying down after a meal. 4. Keeping dry crackers or cereal nearby to snack on can also help with these symptoms. In severe cases, there are medications that can be taken to alleviate this distress, however, we suggest trying non-medicinal therapies first.

The County Woman Magazine

Welcome to the July/August 2017 Issue of The Atlantic County Woman Publication!

Summertime has finally arrived. Each year, I look forward to that carefree season when the sun is brighter and the days are longer. This is the perfect time of year to recharge yourself and enjoy what these next sunny months have to offer. Summer is the perfect opportunity to try something new, take an exotic getaway, or simply relax down the shore at one of the many fabulous Jersey shore beaches in Atlantic County. As you plan your activities for the summer, the first thing you should put on your list is to find a quiet reading spot and dive Lauren with her handsome into this magazine. There are many top professionals throughout the ULWOL^ /\U[LY County that share their expertise in the areas of health, finance, law, fashion, beauty and much more. Many times, readers have told me how valuable they have found the articles in the Atlantic County Woman and some have even shared specific articles with their friends and family outside of the County. The impact of the knowledge shared by our contributing writers truly goes beyond the borders of Atlantic County! This year marks the beginning of the 11th season of production for the Atlantic County Woman publication. It has been such a privilege to provide our readers with over 6,000 educational articles written by many top professionals and business owners throughout Atlantic County over the past ten years. In addition, I have been extremely blessed to be able to work with these leading professionals for the past three years. Summer has begun and we hope yours is full of magical moments that you can treasure forever. Best, Lauren Shover and the staff at the Atlantic County Woman Publication

The Latest Noninvasive Fat Destruction and Body Sculpting Technology Jeffrey Gosin, M.D., F.A.C.S. Board Certified Vascular Surgeon We all have problem areas of fat that seem to persist in spite of a healthy diet and exercise. Perhaps it is a belly that just won’t go away no matter how many sitXSV RU FUXQFKHV \RX GR )RU PDQ\ SHRSOH LW LV GLIĂ€FXOW ´ORYH KDQGOHVÂľ RU D ´PXIĂ€Q WRS Âľ 0D\EH LW LV WKDW ODVW little bit of “baby weightâ€? around the midsection. There is now a noninvasive, safe and effective laser procedure to remove these stubborn pockets of fat. The Aesthetic Laser Center at Shore Vascular & Vein Center is proud to now offer SculpSureÂŽ, the latest minimally-invasive procedure for targeted fat destruction and body contouring. With SculpSureÂŽ, up to four completely customizable laser applicators are used to deliver a specific type of laser energy to destroy targeted fat cells. The treated fat cells are then permanently eliminated through the body’s natural immune system. SculpSureÂŽ is FDA approved to remove up to 24% of unwanted fat with each treatment, without the need for painful surgery. It can be used in many different body types, and in all skin types. The SculpSureÂŽ versatile applicator system allows the treatments to be completely individualized to each person’s unique shape and areas of concern. This allows for smooth and natural-appearing body contouring. Each SculpSureÂŽ treatment takes just 25 minutes. That’s less than half of the time of other body sculpting procedures. SculpSureÂŽ treatment is extremely well tolerated, with people typically describing only mild to moderate discomfort during the procedure. Best of all, there is no down time following the procedure. Individuals can return to all of their usual activities immediately following treatment, with no restrictions. SculpSureÂŽ has been featured on “The Doctorsâ€? and recently was voted “Beauty Game Changerâ€? in New Beauty Magazine’s Best of 2017 Best of Beauty Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions: Who is a candidate for SculpSureŽ? Typically people with “trouble spots that seem resistant to diet and exercise are the best candidates for SculpSureŽ. Optimal results are obtained in healthy individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less.

Is SculpSureÂŽ just for women? No. Both men and women will benefit from SculpSureÂŽ.

What does SculpSureÂŽ treatment feel like? People will first feel a cooling sensation. This helps to keep the skin comfortable during treatment. The laser then cycles on and off, raising the temperature of the fat cells, causing the fat destruction. During this phase of treatment people generally describe a deep warmth and/or tingling sensation during the 25-minute treatment. It is generally very well tolerated. Furthermore, the treatment can be customized as it is being performed to provide additional comfort when needed.

Is there bruising or pain following treatment? There is typically no bruising and only minimal soreness after SculpSureÂŽ treatment. Unlike other types of body sculpting technologies that use suction and freezing to destroy fat, SculpSureÂŽ uses laser energy. When the treatment is completed, the laser is simply removed from the body and the individual goes about his or her normal activities. There is no painful massage or warming required after the treatment is completed.

How much does SculpSureŽ cost? Every treatment plan is customized to each individual’s requirements and goals. Cost will depend upon the number of areas being treated and the size of each of those areas. Our physician will work with you to create a specific treatment plan to obtain the best possible results in the most cost-effective manner. Exact pricing is determined during a free initial consultation. We are also currently offering special pricing as we introduce this incredible new technology to our community.

ABOUT OUR DOCTOR Jeffrey Gosin, M.D., F.A.C.S., is our medical director. He is Board Certified in both Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He is also an experienced laser surgeon, treating numerous vascular and other aesthetic conditions with the highest quality laser devices available. Dr. Gosin personally performs all laser procedures in our center.

CoolSculpting... Experience Matters Accent Aesthetics was the first to bring CoolSculpting to Atlantic County and we have continued to surpass all other practices in quality and expertise. As South Jersey’s leading CoolSculpting practice, we have the experience and expertise you deserve. Many people work out, eat healthy and still struggle with fat that won’t budge. Others are hoping to trim trouble areas to provide motivation to continue weight loss. Imagine saying goodbye to that tummy bulge or those love handles after a single treatment!

What is CoolSculpting? It is the first and only FDA-cleared treatment to eliminate unwanted fat. Using patented cold technology, CoolSculpting precisely targets and removes fat from stubborn areas without surgery or downtime.

How Does it Work? A hand piece is placed onto the area of concern. The fat is gently drawn into the hand piece and selectively cooled. CoolSculpting freezes unwanted fat, crystalizing fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by your body. You will see results in as little as three weeks and the eliminated fat is GONE FOR GOOD!

What Areas Can Be Treated? Flanks, love handles, abdomen, inner and outer thighs are the most common areas to be treated but we encourage a complimentary customized consult to determine if CoolSculpting is right for you

What Does CoolSculpting Feel Like? We are a full-service spa as well as a physician’s office so you will relax in a spa-like environment during your treatment. Patients describe a slight discomfort during the first few minutes of the procedure after the hand piece has been applied and the cooling started. Each treatment period lasts one hour and most people nap, read, listen to music or watch a video. You are welcome to bring your iPad, phone, laptop or other form of entertainment.

What Are the Benefits of CoolSculpting? CoolSculpting is a non-invasive treatment which allows you to avoid the risks and downtime of surgery while sculpting away unwanted areas of fat. The results are natural, noticeablee and permanent! CoolSculpting is thee #1 non-surgical body sculpting procedure. edure. Call for your free consultation and find nd out why!

JULY/AUGUST MONTHLY SPECIALS

When Will I See my Results? You will begin to see results in 3-4 weeks as your body eliminates the crystalized fat cells. Maximum results are seen in 60-90 days.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects to CoolSculpting? Accent Aesthetics provides a professional atmosphere where you can be assured of safe and responsible care. As with any procedure there are side effects, but with CoolSculpting they are minimal. Some people can experience mild bruising which resolves in a week. Patients often describe a numbness or decreased sensitivity to the treatment area that lasts 1-2 weeks. Creating Balance Through Practice ritten by Laurie Greene, PhD, ERYT500 Owner, Yoga Nine, Ship Bottom, LBI & Ventnor

“Slow down, you move too fast, you got to make the morning last, just kicking down the cobblestones, looking for fun and feeling groovy.â€? (Paul Simon) Slow is the way to go, and not just because the tortoise won the race against the hare. In our fast-paced, “get it now,â€? “I want it yesterdayâ€? culture, we often overlook the many virtues of slowness. In yoga practice, it is erroneously believed that going faster is more challenging, more advanced, and more desirable--but this is false. What the yogis aimed to do, in fact, was slow time down to a standstill, to stop the constant movement and change what was happening in the universe at the cellular level. This vibrational movement in Samkhya philosophy is called “prakriti,â€? and it is the source of creation of all things; but behind this everchanging and moving force of nature is an unchanging static truth. It is this “truth,â€? called “purushaâ€? or “brahman,â€? with which yogis attempted to yoke or merge by slowing things down...by cultivating stillness. Moving toward stillness is a process of slowing things down. Slowing down anything that we might as embodied human beings--our breath, our bodies, our heart rate, and Ă€nally our minds.

notice and then correct these habitual mistakes and better understand ourselves as we move around in our bodies. In short, it helps us become more embodied and aware of our habitual (unconscious habits and motivations)--and to change our habits, to avoid injuring ourselves, to learn. Slow is also MORE challenging, not less. Slow movement and holding postures (in stillness) is more taxing on every level. Slowness increases muscle strength, builds stamina, and increases steadiness and balance more than fast-paced aerobic movements. Try going down in a chatturanga (push-up) to the count of ten. The slower, the more challenging. All the health benefits of breath control, from the Western perspective, have also been found in slow, rhythmic, deep breathing. Most of all, slowing down our bodies and breath allows us to slow down and focus our thoughts. This ability to focus allows us to think clearly and remove the stress and confusion from our lives. It is a prerequisite for meditation. Moving toward stillness is moving toward happiness.

So, take it slow.

“As the breath goes, so shall the mind; as the body goes, so shall the breath. (SS) Practically, slow has many advantages. Moving slowly allows us time to observe ourselves as we move. It allows us to evaluate our movements and see the moment when control or concentration is lost, we become unbalanced, or feel uneven. It gives us time to

TESTIMONIAL Kay is a resident at Woodview Estates. “I was living alone in a private home that was becoming harder for me to manage on my own. I was having difficulty climbing the entrance steps to my home, and the bathroom wasn’t safe and accessible for my walker. I didn’t want to worry my children and I knew it was time for me to move.â€? Kay’s son, Fred, said, “I was constantly worried about my mother, feared for her safety and didn’t want her to be alone.â€? Kay made the decision to look for an assisted living community for herself and looked at several communities. “I knew immediately as soon as I walked into Woodview Estates that it was the right community for me‌ I just felt it. We had heard about their excellent reputation for care and when we came in for a tour, every staff member stopped to say hello and we just felt warm and welcomed.â€? Kay said, “This is the best decision I ever made. From the first night that I moved in, I felt so comfortable and safe. I have never looked back. I am so impressed with the quality of care from every staff member – from the housekeepers, restaurant servers, care staff, wonderful nurses, and administration – the entire staff is hands-on involved every day providing care with dignity, respect and love.â€? Fred said that he and his family are so thrilled with everything about Woodview Estates. “I no longer have any worries, feel at peace knowing my mother is happy, enjoying her life, and is well cared for. My family loves the logical layout of the building with ‘neighborhoods’ which include common area full kitchens and living rooms – we come to visit often with our children and our dog, and use the full kitchen for parties and dinners. The staff at Woodview have become part of our family and embrace all of us and our mother. We couldn’t be happier. This experience has been joyful for our entire family.â€? Kay said, “I want to tell anyone thinking about moving to an assisted living that this is the only place they should consider. It was one of the best decisions I made.â€?

YAsk Nancy M. Rice, Esq. Certified Elder Law Attorney

Nancy Rice has been practicing Estate Planning and Elder Law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania since 1986. She was Certified as an Elder Law Attorney in 1997, and has maintained offices in Camden and Cape May counties, specifically in Cherry Hill and Ocean City. She can answer your questions and concerns- just call 609-398-3447.

Will Contests: How Do They Work? In New Jersey, the probate of a Will and the appointment of an Executor is most commonly not a formal procedure. If a Will is properly executed and has two Witnesses and a Notary, the Will can be admitted to probate by the Surrogate’s Office of the County in which the deceased resided. No court proceeding is required, and Surrogates Offices are set up to make the Probate process simple and cost-efficient. If a beneficiary of an estate has reason to think that the Will to be submitted to probate is not valid, it is critical that he or she contact a lawyer immediately following the death. New Jersey law provides that the Will cannot be admitted to probate by the Surrogate until the eleventh (11th) day following the date of death. During that 10-day period, anyone seeking to challenge the Will may file a Caveat, a simple statement of objection, which prevents the Surrogate from probating a Will for that Estate. If a Will is presented, the Surrogate advises the named Executor under the Will that he or she must file a Complaint and Order to Show Cause. He or she must file this in the Superior Court, Chancery Division, Probate Part to have the Will admitted to probate by the Court. If no Caveat is filed, and the Will is in proper form, the Surrogate may admit the Will to probate and issue Executor “Short Certificates” to the person appointed as Executor in the Will. As an Executor of the estate has tremendous power, it is critical to prevent the appointment of the Executor from the outset if there is a basis to challenge the Will. This is important

because most judges are hesitant to “remove” an Executor after he or she is appointed, unless there is clear evidence that he or she acted improperly. If the Will has already been admitted to probate, you must still act promptly if you want to challenge it. In New Jersey, a resident who has received Notice of Probate of the Will has only four (4) months to contest the filing of the Will; non-residents have only six (6) months. The reasons to challenge the validity of a Will, include: (A): The Will was subject of a fraud; (B): The Will was not properly executed; (C): The person who signed the Will (Testator) did not have “testamentary capacity” to understand or sign the Will; (D): The Testator was coerced or unduly influenced to sign the Will. A. Fraud It is fairly unusual but possible that a Will was signed as a result of someone’s fraudulent conduct. An example of this is, if a Testator is beguiled into signing a document without knowing what it is, what it says, or even that it is a Will. Another example is if a beneficiary induces a Testator to execute a Will based on false facts (e.g. a suitor promises to marry the Testator if he is made a beneficiary under the Testator’s Will, when the suitor has no actual intention of marrying the Testator). In the context of a Will contest, fraud will not be presumed. Moreover, if the Testator learns of the fraudulent conduct and does nothing to change the Will over an extended period of time, it may be argued that the Testator affirmed the contents of the Will and, as a

Part 1

result, it may be upheld. B. Due Execution In New Jersey, a typewritten Will must be witnessed by two (2) persons, over the age of eighteen (18) years, both of whom witnessed the Will signing. It is helpful (but not necessary) for the Will to have a “self-proving affidavit” attached, which is signed by the Testator, the Witnesses, and a Notary. If a Will is entirely in the handwriting of the Testator (called a “holographic” Will), New Jersey requires no Witnesses but it cannot be admitted to probate to the Surrogate; it must be admitted by the Court, upon filing of a Complaint and Order to Show Cause.

In the next issue, we will discuss the other two grounds to challenge a Will: (1) Lack of Testamentary Capacity and (2) Undue Influence. In the meantime, if you believe that a Will should be challenged because it is defective, for one reason or another, you should hire a seasoned attorney, who has significant experiences in this area of law. Do not delay with your decision to engage an experienced attorney because the law allows only a narrow window of time during which a caveat and/or a Will contest may be filed.

Help Protect Your Children’s Feet While Playing Sports Children and Sports

All parents know that children take to sports like ducks to water. Participation in sports develops a sense of self discipline, teamwork, and recognition of the importance of a healthy body -- good habits that last a lifetime. Training Emphasis Every child physically matures at his or her own rate, and has a different degree of athletic ability. Early training should emphasize proper technique and basic movement skills in all sports. Podiatric physicians, specialists in treating the lower extremities, say children who concentrate on a single sport at too young an age are more likely to develop injuries of the foot and ankle. Save specialization in sports for the late teens.

Footwear Whether parents like it or not, part of a child’s image revolves around footwear. For good foot health, the condition of the shoes are more important than the price tag or brand name. Podiatric physicians agree it’s often better to buy a child two $50 pairs of shoes than a single $100 pair, so the shoes can be rotated, to avoid rapid wear deterioration. Because a child’s feet are constantly growing, it is Stuart W. Honick, D.P.M., P.T. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Diplomate American Board of Podiatric Surgery )VHYK *LY[PÄLK 0U -VV[ :\YNLY`

important to allow at least one finger’s width from the end of the longest toe when buying shoes.

Growing Bones and Ligaments The immature bones of children are different from those of adults. The “growth plates” in children’s bones do not finish closing until age 15-17 in boys and 13-15 in girls. When stressed, these plates are more susceptible to injury than the tendons and ligaments that support the joints. Podiatric physicians warn repetitive overuse can cause inflammation of the growth plates. They advise parents to promote diverse physical activities for their children rather than one sport.

Injuries and Treatments Many children suffer from mild “torsional” imbalances, commonly known as in-toeing and out-toeing. Most children outgrow these imbalances without medical treatment. However, if a child has obvious torsional imbalances, he or she may be more susceptible to injury. If that is the case, keep a close eye out for foot and ankle injuries associated with sports activity. Foot injuries commonly seen in very active children include: Ankle Sprains. In older children, stretched or torn ligaments in the ankle, known as sprains, are more common than fractures. A sprain may cause extensive swelling around the ankle just like a fracture. Immediate treatment is crucial to quick healing. A podiatric physician can provide treatment as well as recommend balancing and strengthening exercises to restore coordination quickly. Fractures. Fractures from overuse in child-athletes are commonly seen in podiatric medical offices. Growth plates are particularly susceptible to injuries, but mid-shaft fractures of the bone also occur. If a fracture is not severe, rest and immobilization may be the best treatment. More complicated injuries may require casting or surgical correction. If swelling and pain persist, see a podiatric physician. Sever’s Disease. An inflammation of a growth plate, Sever’s Disease is often felt as pain behind the heel caused by inflammation of the apophysis, a growth center where a tendon is attached to the bone. Rest, ice, and heel lifts are usually prescribed. Shin splints and stress fractures. Shin splints are microtears or inflammation of the anterior leg muscles, as our Achilles tendon pulls in the posterior region of the leg. Again, rest is most important in healing these injuries. If pain is persistent, see a podiatrist. Dr. Honick’s warm and capable manner and skilled staff makes a visit with your child a very positive and healing experience. Your family is in very competent care when the need for a podiatrist arises!

Perioral Rejuvenation Fuller lips have been synonymous with beauty and youth since the beginning of recorded history. Ancient Egyptian and Greek cultures have documented reports of the lips and valued a full, symmetrical appearance. The size, shape, color and position all play critical roles in the overall beauty and harmony of the face. Well-defined, full lips represent attractiveness, and at Sood Center for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, it is our goal to help you reach your full potential. In recent years there has been an explosion of procedures to enhance perioral appearance. Laser resurfacing, neurotoxins/fillers, and fat injections have all been used to volumize and correct the appearance of perioral aging. It is important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon trained to perform and offer a variety of procedures to maximize your outcomes. While creating the ‘perfect lip,’ it is important to understand there is no fixed definition, and it is up to the skills of the physician and the expectations of the individual to create good outcomes. At Sood Center for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on taking time to understand our patient’s goals and customize a plan to help you achieve your best.

The Aging Lip In order to select the right treatment, it is important to understand the role of aging on the lips and perioral region. With time, lips atrophy and thin due to a number of factors, such as gravity, sun damage, smoking, weight changes, and genetics. An aged perioral region may include upper lip lines, loss of lip volume, a ‘frowned’ appearance, unsightly laugh lines, chin creases, and loss of definition. Our goal is to listen and help you obtain your youthful appearance with a number of specialized techniques such as volumizing and skin resurfacing.

Aesthetics Symmetry and proportions are keys to success when it comes to a refined, youthful perioral appearance. Over time there have been several changes to the philosophy and ‘ideal’ proportions of the lip. As a general rule at the Sood Center, we avoid conforming to rigid dimensions and measurements and emphasize ideal facial harmony and balance.

What to Expect? All consultations at Sood Center for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery start with listening to our patients and represents the single step that leads to overwhelming success within our practice. Once our patients define their goals, we discuss a variety of treatment plans that can be performed the same day or scheduled for their convenience. It is important to discuss your medical history and any medications your take to ensure safety during a treatment.

A Passion for Enhancement & Perfection There is no doubt about it, plastic surgery has become safer, more mainstream, and highly accessible. While once only reserved for the rich and famous, these days Americans are undergoing thousands of plastic surgery procedures. One of the reasons for this surge is because of the increased awareness about the success and safety of these procedures, thanks to enhanced technology and education. Dr. Mohit Sood has a reputation that precedes him and as a boardcertified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, he takes great pride in putting his patients first. He adds, “Cosmetic surgery patients are no different than any other medical patients in that they want to be treated with dignity and compassion.” Thanks to his well-rounded training he has become one of the most trusted names in the South Jersey plastic surgery industry. His practice includes everything from laser treatments, to all kinds of reconstructive surgery. Dr. Sood and his entire team at Sood Center encourage new patients to drop by and learn about the vast array of treatments that are available. “Our team realizes the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery can be a difficult one for many people. We are more than happy to provide you with information and answer any questions you have without applying pressure or becoming judgmental.” His office frequently offers plastic surgery and med spa specials so be sure and visit their website before your first visit.

ACW: What are the most commonly treated conditions at Sood Center? Dr. Sood: I believe no two patient’s desires and experiences are the same. Each patient is treated as an individual in our practice. Our most common requests are for body contouring (liposuction, tummy tucks, body lifts), facial enhancement (eyelid rejuvenation, facelifts, laser resurfacing), breast enhancement, and minimally invasive procedures (lasers, PRP, CoolSculpting). We additionally have a full reconstructive practice where we work alongside leading surgeons to offer breast and skin oncology reconstruction.

ACW: What is the average age of your clientele? Dr. Sood: We take pride in offering a wide variety of services to the community so we have no age and gender boundaries. The human form changes dramatically over the course of our lives and we enjoy treating the entire spectrum.

ACW: What is the most challenging aspect of your profession? Dr. Sood: The pursuit of perfection! It is our mission to individualize everyone’s experience. At Sood Center my staff and I constantly strive for the best possible experience and outcomes for our patients. We can impact the patient experience on so many levels from their initial office visit, to

procedures, to follow-up care. At our office, we are constantly strivingg for enhancement and improvement of our personalized boutique style care. It is a never-ending journey to offer the latest aesthetic advancements that make impactful differences in our patient’s lives withh minimal downtime and side effects. It’s a challenge we all thoroughly enjoy.

ACW: Please share a success story from your practice. Dr. Sood: In sincerity, there are justt too many to count. Every win is a big win when it comes to patient care and satisfaction. Having the Dr. Mohit Sood ability to impact our patient’s self esteem and confidence is [\ important to our practice and it’s a responsibility we take very seriously. In some ways, I would say our biggest success story is our practice as a whole and the community’s warm reception to our message. We are grateful for the overwhelming support from our patients. I love the idea of having a lifetime of making positive impact in the lives of others and look forward to a countless number of successes!

ACW: What is your educational background? Dr. Sood: At a young age, I moved from New Jersey to South Florida to pursue a highly competitive dual admission BS/DO seven-year advanced program at Nova Southeastern University. I was inspired during this time in Florida to pursue a surgical career and continued my postgraduate training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. I spent five full years training to become a board certified General Surgeon and completed an additional two-year fellowship as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. I then became board certified in Plastic Surgery, as well earning myself the distinct title of double board certified. I trained at leading medical institutions in the Northeast including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Cooper University Hospital, Jefferson Hand Centers, St Christopher’s Children’s Hospital, Reading Hospital, Westchester Medical Center, and several more. I was fortunate enough to work alongside industry leading surgeons learning specialized techniques and take pride in maintaining exceptional standards to deliver my patients the highest quality of care.

The New Fitness Buzz You Cannot Ignore! Leah Schwartz, owner/certified barre and pilates instructor

“Start where you are, grow from there, the practice is yours. My journey started with my love for barre. I connected with the fluidity of the movements and how my body felt. Pilates was natural progression. The more the I practiced, the more I desired to perfect my skills. In 2013 I began my training and certifications in Barre and in 2016 I completed my reformer certification vee from Balance Body. Throughout my education I have collaborated with mentors of varying practices that have diversified my technique and knowledge, and molded my abilities as an instructor.

I

f you have never taken a Barre class, you may be a little confused on the concept. Even if you have taken a class, you might not be able to explain to your friend why she needs to come with you next time you visit our studio.

Below are the top questions people ask about Barre at Breathe. What is a BARRE workout? Barre workouts are a fusion of ballet, Pilates, functional training and yoga. This workout was created with a woman’s body in mind. It uses isometric or small movements to target women’s trouble spots, such as glutes, thighs, abdominals and backs of arms. a way that you are lifting and toning while leaning and lengthening. Think ballerina body! Do you need to have ballet or Pilates experience? No! We will teach you everything you need to know. Form is key and that is what our guidance is here for. :KR EHQHðWV IURP %DUUH FODVVHV" Everyone! Barre can be a great workout for runners or anyone who lacks flexibility. It is a great low-impact workout that benefits all types of women—early to mid-stages of pregnancy, just had a baby, or maybe hasn’t worked out in a long time. Many of our barre clients are people who have or are recovering from injury. They choose barre because it is a low-impact, safer option for your joints; however, it’s still dynamic and provides awesome results. You will sweat, shake, burn, lift and tone, all while moving to great music. What should I expect during a Barre class? After warming up, our classes are usually broken into segments, which work through targeted muscle groups. For instance, we start with standing thigh and seatwork, move to upper body, and finish with great mat core work while adding lowimpact cardio intervals in between that. This will help get your heart rate up and

burn fat. Each class will provide id dee d you with a total body workout, t, including stretching. Each class ss iss a challenge and the exercises will change and so will you. Neverr expect to take the same class twice, as this will help to keep your body from plateauing. What results can I expect and how soon can I see them? m? Our clients tell us they see improved strength and more muscle definition after each class. They feel strong, graceful and feminine and feel a difference immediately, but see a difference after four to five workouts.

Fun Time At The Shore – It’s Summer Time – Not Slammer Time! Criminal Charges – How We Can Help You!

A

s summer is underway, thousands upon thousands flock to the Jersey Shore in Ocean, Monmouth and Atlantic Counties. While we all endeavor to have a fun, peaceful time, certain things can lead to involvement with the criminal justice system. Although sunbathing and cookouts are prevalent on the beaches, use and misuse of alcohol and other substances can lead to criminal charges. This article serves to illustrate in a very basic fashion many common charges that people unfortunately encounter during the summer months at the shore and how EFC LAW PRACTICE can help you regarding these types of legal matters. One must first understand how the state criminal justice system works in its simplest forms. The criminal code known as Title 2C provides a framework for criminal charges that are brought on by state, county or municipal law enforcement. Charges are classified as indictable crimes (which the lay person knows as a felony) and petty disorderly persons / disorderly persons offenses (which the lay person knows as a misdemeanor). There are also municipal ordinance violations which fall into neither category and, of course, motor vehicle violations such as speeding, driving while intoxicated and careless driving. All of these categories have statutory penalties that may include imprisonment, serious fines, loss of driving privileges, probation and subsequent consequences such as immigration issues, loss of security clearance, voting ability, jury service and a multitude of other things. But there is help – utilize our services by calling for a free consultation to see what defenses, both legal and factual – can assist you. Indictable crimes are those where a punishment in excess of six months is authorized. They are categorized as first, second, third or fourth degree crimes. Generally speaking, first degree carries a term of imprisonment from 10-20 years, second degree is 5-10 years, third degree is 3-5 years and fourth degree is up to 1.5 years. A petty disorderly persons offense carries a maximum punishment of “30 days in jail,” a disorderly persons offense carries a maximum punishment of no more than 180 days in jail. Municipal ordinances carry a maximum punish of up to 90 days in jail, up to 90 days of community service, up to a $2,000 fine or a combination of all three. The most common charges seen at the shore include the following: disorderly conduct, domestic violence, criminal mischief, public urination, simple assault, open container of alcohol, shoplifting, defiant trespass, possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, noise violations, possession of fireworks and

a host of many others. Usually, if the charge is an indictable crime, it will be handled by the Attorney General or County Prosecutor’s office of the municipality where the incident occurred. If it is a petty disorderly persons, disorderly persons, ordinance violation or motor vehicle summons, the municipality where the incident occurred and their municipal court will handle it. If it is a combination of both types, the Superior Court handles the indictable crime and takes hold of the offenses as well to help ensure uniformity. Tragically, a combination of large crowds, the summer heat, abuse of alcohol or other substances and familial issues can spell a recipe for disaster that can lead a law abiding citizen into the throes of our state criminal justice system. For younger adults and teens in school, this experience may also have ramifications within their own school regarding administrative issues. When the person is charged, they are supposed to get served with a criminal complaint that usually contains an S (Summons – released on their own recognizance) or a W (Warrant – generally taken to jail and now subject to the Criminal Justice Bail Reform effective January 1, 2017). It is imperative that either way you protect your rights by contacting us immediately. The benefit of sooner rather than later is that the incident is fresh in your memory, we can, if appropriate, obtain a defense investigator to gather statements from witnesses or alleged victims before the prosecuting agency can speak with them and we can notify law enforcement and the prosecuting agency that we represent you and you wish to assert your 5TH Amendment right to remain silent – thus preventing the former from contacting you anymore. The above applies to all adults age 18 and over and likewise to in-state residents, tourists visiting from other countries and out of state residents. Additionally, if the above type matters are committed by a juvenile (under age 18), the New Jersey Superior Court, Chancery Division, Family Part will hear these matters. The difference being that the juvenile court considers rehabilitation first and punishment second and the adult court considers punishment first. Use our experience of almost 12 years of exclusive criminal law practice, of which 10 years as a former assistant prosecutor, and now serving as defense counsel to assist you in this troubling time. We handle all aspects of state criminal law, starting with arrest to plea, trial, sentencing, appeal and every other type of matter in between. As Britain’s Prime Minister William E Gladstone stated, “justice delayed is justice denied.” Do not sleep on your rights, especially when it includes loss of liberty!

Russell & Marinucci Welcomes Newest Associate: Katrina Tattoli Before Katrina Tattoli arrived at a career in law, she was B a Special Education teacher working in a self-contained

school for students with Autism and other developmental disabilities. She says, “One of the most difficult parts of my job was navigating the family dynamics, different governmental agencies, and realities of my students’ everyday lives. I found the interplay between the law and its application in the real world to be the most interesting part of my job.” She witnessed first hand the intent of the law in the real world, outside of the textbooks. “There are laws and then there is what actually happens, and being able to use the law to get a favorable outcome for my students was fascinating to me.” Now an associate at Russell & Marinucci, she predominantly focuses on Family Law, including divorce, custody, parenting time, and support issues. The area of Family Law is unique in that it is a field where both parties can often feel like they have lost. Emotions can run high, especially if the parties are dissolving a marriage. It can be one of the more trying times in a person’s life. Luckily, Katrina’s background has allotted her the unique skills and expertise to be able to navigate these arduous circumstances for her clientele. Russell & Marinucci is one of the top family law firms in Ocean County.

ACW: What did you enjoy most about your clerkship? Katrina: My clerkship was the most enjoyable and challenging employment experience I’ve had thus far. Being able to work in the County Courthouse puts you in the center of the action every single day. YouCertified never know is going by thewho Supreme Courtto walk through the door looking of New Jersey as a Matrimonial for you to help them solve a problem. My favorite part was the ability Lawwith Attorney to interact so many different types of people and experience a wide variety of issues all in the same day. It is an invaluable educational experience that I would urge all law students or aspiring lawyers to seek out.

ACW: What do you enjoy most about your profession? Katrina: I love the fact that it’s always changing. Every day new laws are passed, new cases are published, and new judges take the bench. No matter how many years you have been practicing, there is always something new to think about and new problems to solve.

Katrina Tattoli

ACW: What kind of challenges do you encounter? Katrina: The greatest challenges can also be found in the ever-changing nature of the law. It is very difficult to explain to a client that even though someone was in a similar situation to them not so long ago, the two cases can end up very differently. The public perception of the law is often very black and white. The challenges lie in the grey areas, which can be tough to understand and accept.

ACW: Who are your role models in this field and why? Katrina: My role models are the women (and men) who are able to find the time to practice law, raise a family, and participate in organizations that are important to them. Many of the seasoned attorneys I have met over the last two years make it look incredibly easy going from practicing law, to bar association dinners, to their children’s sporting events. They appear welcoming and enthusiastic. It is definitely more challenging than it looks. These professionals who have incredible passion for what they do and are able to live full lives while doing it, are beyond admirable. Katrina attended New York University and majored in Childhood and Special Education. She later went on to Rutgers-Newark Law School where she participated in several internships and legal organizations. One of the highlights was working in the Rutgers Constitutional Rights Clinic focusing on voting rights and education law issues as a Kinoy-Stavis Public Interest Fellow. After graduating with a Juris Doctor degree, she moved to Ventnor to begin a clerkship with the Honorable Jeffrey D. Light, J.S.C. in the Superior Court, Chancery Division-Family Part in Atlantic County. Eighteen months later Katrina began her career in private practice at Russell & Marinucci in Ocean City.

“ I Love My Team! Written By Alexa D’Amato Barrera, Esquire

We are thrilled to be able to introduce you to the attorneys at the D’Amato Law Firm on the opposite page. Thank you for indulging me with a more personal perspective of how our days are spent: Lawyers As you can see, my father, Paul R. D’Amato, and I are partners at the Firm. When he called and asked that I join the Firm, I was nervous that we would argue or he would be disappointed in me. Thankfully I can say that we complement each other in ways I only dreamed. He is an amazing mentor and it is truly a blessing that I get to learn from him AND give him a hug every day. The love of Stephen M. Van Natten’s life, Dr. Shellymarie Magan, lured him to the Jersey Shore and I have since gained a brother. He has a masterful way of sharing his ideas and insight with our team and clients. I am so thankful that he left Pennsylvania and the security of being one of the top Prosecutors in Leigh County and found a home here at the D’Amato Law Firm and a passion for helping those who are victims at the hand of negligence instead of violence. When you hear someone say, “She has a good head on her shoulders, they’re talking about Kasi Gifford. Kasi has a great mind for the law, and having had clerked with the Honorable James P. Savio, she certainly knows the Rules of Court and can easily analyze any fact pattern. Kasi fits in perfectly and I look forward to our many more years of sisterhood together here at the D’Amato Law Firm.

doing dictation, a law student writing briefs, and then as a “baby attorney, as she used to call me, when I left Atlantic County Counsel and joined the Law Firm more than 15 years ago. Rose’s secretary, Shirley Martin, has been with our Firm since she “retired 17 years ago. Shirley worked at the Playboy as a legal secretary and to this day she dresses “to the nines, wears high heels and is smart as a whip! She cracks me up with her honesty, and I love that while she’s a grandmother, she has the spirit of a 30-year-old. In life there are certain people you share everything with and say “you can’t live without them. At the office, Susan Eisenlohr is that person. Susan is so incredibly smart and remembers everything about our clients and their cases. We both have a child on the Autism Spectrum so we share many personal heartaches, accomplishments and aspirations. God truly blessed me and our clients when he brought Susan to the Firm. Laura Pastore and Danielle Montonaro are our legal secretaries. Sandi and I had the pleasure of knowing them before they came to the Law Firm in their prior careers as nail technicians. When we had two openings in our office, it was a no-brainer to bring these incredibly talented, beautiful and passionate women to the Firm. It has been tremendous watching them grow and learn to love the law like we do.

Many people can say they like going to work. I LOVE MY TEAM and it is an honor to serve our clients with each and every one of them!

Other Members Of The Team My mom and Paul’s wife, Sandi D’Amato, is our office manager. She has been working at the Firm since I and my sisters, Ava Cocchi and Ashley Staller, were in school full time, over 30 years now. Her office is right next to mine so I get to hug her and hear her voice every day. I am seriously contemplating putting a window in our shared wall so that I can see her beautiful face at all times. Paul’s paralegal, Rose Scogno, started working with Paul when she was 19 years old. As the oldest of three daughters, I challenged my parents’ rules and authority as a teenager, and Rose was there to assure my parents that if they let me live, I’d make a great adult. It is so amazing that I have had the opportunity to learn from her when I was working at the Law Firm as a teenager doing the filing, a college student answering the phones and

10 Tips To Keep Your Pets Healthy This Summer 1. Do not leave your pet alone in your car. Vehicles heat up quickly in the sun, and animals left in them can succumb to heat stroke within minutes. Heat stroke is life threatening for both dogs and cats. 2. To prevent your dog from overheating, do not exercise it in hot weather. Take runs or walks during the cool hours of the early morning or late evening. And be careful on hot pavement, as it can sometimes burn their footpads. 3. Dogs and cats need a cool, shady place to sleep during hot weather, as well as plenty of clean, fresh water that is accessible at all times. Feed your dog or cat in the cooler hours of the day. 4. Be sure that your pet’s vaccinations are up to date. Parvovirus, an illness that flourishes in hot weather can be fatal to dogs that have not received vaccinations. Also, be sure your pet’s rabies vaccinations are current. 5. If you dog hasen’t been tested for heartworm this year, see your veterinarian. Make sure your pet also receives flea and tick preventative medicine. 6. Keep your pet well groomed. Daily brushing or combining

lets you check for fleas and ticks. Ticks can carry infections, diseases and fleas can cause allergic reactions and “hot spots +Y 4HYR 5L^RPYR WPJ[\YLK ^P[O OPZ in dogs. HZZVJPH[L +Y :HYHO ;YHU 7. Play with your pet instead of simply stroking it to fend off July 4th firework fears. Follow your dog’s cue to help it “hide in a favorite room or under a desk, complete with chew toys. Turn on the radio or TV to muffle outside noises. 8. Keep dog’s away from picnic garbage. Ingestion of corncobs and chicken bones can be life threatening. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center provides a complete list of toxic foods. 9. If you have a swimming pool, do not leave your dog unattended in the pool area. Not all dogs can swim and they can drown if they fall into the water. 10. Use a heavy screen on windows or keep them closed if you have cats. During the summer, the number of cats suffering from “high-rise syndrome, or falling from windows, increases dramatically.

Insomnia

The Habit Of Mind And Body Of Not Sleeping Or Staying Asleep Understand In Order To Better Remedy It

N

ever enough time all day to do everything that I have to do. That is, of course, until I put my head on a pillow at night to go to sleep. Then, time is eternal. I can’t fall asleep for eons and it’s exhausting just lying there knowing that this will never happen. I try ever so hard not to stare at the damn green numbers on that alarm clock that will necessarily gong 20 minutes after I eventually doze VɈ OV\YZ SH[LY 5V JVTWHZZPVU [OLYL Sometimes I fall asleep reasonably, especially when I don’t turn on the TV, phone or laptop—but then I wake up every hour on the hour; first to go to the bathroom, then just to wake up because—who knows? Then I can’t go back to sleep for anything; exhausted again all the next day. Then again, sometimes when I’m really lucky, I fall asleep OK; don’t wake up too much; however, I do wake up much earlier than I want/am supposed to and that’s it for the day. I’m thinking that I should just get up because I’m awake, but I know my day is going to be troublesome. My partner says I snore and she has black and blue on her shins—I guess I can get restless and kick a little. I certainly don’t mean to—poor thing! Perhaps I should get this situation under control before I’m in court! Sleep is an essential ingredient to having good health and wellbeing. Air, water and sustenance, along with affection, approval, acceptance and acknowledgement, are all equally vital for all human beings to thrive and grow. Thirty-three percent of us chronically struggle with sleeplessness or wakefulness, which is described as insomnia. The science of sleep is complex and crosses over into several domains simultaneously. When sleep is disrupted in a persistent way, the medical/ psychiatric detectives put on their Sherlock Holmes equipment and look for pertinent clues. The origins of insomnia herald from medical, pharmacological, psychiatric, psychological and substance use arenas. One does not certainly exclude any of the others. They may all be contributors at the same time even; hence, the need for thorough and knowledgeable detective work. The nomenclature and terminology utilized for sleep disorders can be as confusing as the disorders themselves. To try and keep it simple, Primary Insomnia is any form of sleep disruption that is not the result of either medical or psychiatric reasons or from medication or substance use. The wear and tear of everyday life toil and trouble are the primary contributors to this type of insomnia. By contrast, Secondary Insomnia is due to all the other potential interlopers, i.e., apnea—either obstructive, due to a compromised airway from excess tissue in the back of one’s throat, or central apnea which is far less frequent, but may occur on its own or together with the obstructive type. This is the result of the brain’s breathing center not sending the correct stimuli to the muscles responsible for breathing. Therefore, lapses of proper breathing occur. However, snoring is not a required symptom of this occurrence.

k

The science of sleep is complex and crosses over into several domains simultaneously.

k

If untreated, apnea of either type can cause serious health risks that include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, myocardial infarctions, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and severe daytime somnolence; these things can result in work or driving accidents and a myriad of other things. Literature reviews regarding sleep science note that some people have a predisposition for insomnia that is often initiated by some precipitating event in life which becomes perpetuated due to psychological factors. Among these factors are anticipatory anxiety, expectations of poor or non-restorative sleep, and excessive worry about functioning the next day. Medical conditions that have insomnia as one of their cardinal symptoms are numerous. These may include: pulmonary disorders, neurological disorders, endocrine disorders and cardiac diseases. When these medical conditions are well managed, the sleep issue can usually resolve on its own. The psychiatric/psychological disorders that can adversely affect sleep, and the continuity thereof, are equally numerous. Disorders in this category include: depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, OCD, ADHD, psychotic disorders and varying forms of substance abuse; especially stimulant abuse and alcohol. Medicines and other compounds such as some allergy medicines and caffeine can easily disrupt or delay sleep as well.

Sleep is an essential ingredient to having good health and wellbeing.

Psychological reasons may be important factors also, i.e., unconscious mind ambivalence; meaning that when we are asleep the unconscious portion of our mind is in charge by definition. People who rely heavily on control to manage their lives may have repressed a lot of negative, painful, scary fears and experiences deep inside as a mechanism to protect themselves. Our unconscious doesn’t like to have to monitor all of these negative internalized (but not forgotten) complete disrupters to our security. In an attempt to help, the unconscious serves up these buried problems in dream states during REM (Rapid Eye Movements) phases of sleep. The idea is that we can re-access the issues and now master and eliminate them, hence easing this ongoing burden of fear and anxiety. Nice idea, but the dreams tend to be themed as scary or worse than the original experience(s) were. Mastery has not yet been learned and therefore not applied. Instead, re-access means to relive and that is not helpful at all. There are two defenses for this. First, wake up and your conscious mind with all its defenses returns. The negative dreams stop, even though residual physical feelings may often linger awhile. Second, just don’t go to sleep at all. In that case, insomnia, initial and mid-phase, may occur.

TREATMENT Treatment of insomnia requires a comprehensive examination and assessment to identify the underlying causes. This may include getting a sleep study from a well-reputed center specializing in evaluating sleep disorders. Therapeutic modalities are targeted based on cause and effect; in this case, “effect is the condition of insomnia, the “cause can be multifactorial, given life situations, and include situational, developmental, psychosocial, economic, familial, catastrophic events and other causes previously mentioned in this writing. Accordingly, the treatment plan is correlated to the cause. Steps to take include reaching out to your family physician or a provider you feel comfortable engaging in a discussion about your sleep concerns. S/He can guide you in what steps to take.

Recommendations include, but are not limited to: Sleep Hygiene and Stimulus Control – are two more nonpharmaceutical methods to improve sleep issues, i.e. more attention to time to bed—fixed sleep and wake times, no electronics, read a boring book, soft lighting, set up a second designated “go to place if sleep is not attainable or you can’t fall back asleep and/or other suggestions.

k

Meditation can be a way to relax and decrease stressful thinking that prohibits sleep. There are many ways and resources that can help one to relax their mind and body thereby decreasing and hopefully eliminating bothersome stress-causing situations.

Medications may be in order; prescription or non-prescription sleep aids can help, but it must be stressed that in the absence of understanding the “cause of the insomnia, it is best to consult with a physician before determining what to take. The rationale is to achieve targeted therapies not to create other dependencies. Lifestyle changes such as healthy diet and exercise, weight control if indicated, reduction in caffeinated drinks and nicotine may be helpful as well as paying attention to the timing of when you eat. Holistic therapies have gained quite a bit of momentum. Again, it is important to be guided in this and any other treatment because one size does not fit all. It is important to individualize what is best for you and understand the science behind the treatment. As already noted, chronic insomnia is a complicated problem and should only be assessed and treated by board certified behavioral health professionals, medical doctors and if need be, by clinicians and facilities certified and approved for sleep medicine and its studies.

Mechanical Devices – these range from various forced air apparati, i.e. CPAP or BIPAP machines, oral or nasal devices to open up airways and better move air flow to enhance improved quality and restorative sleep.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – assists individuals to discover thoughts and negative behaviors and/or acquired beliefs that may be at the core of not sleeping. As a result, one can learn how to manage these thoughts and/or behaviors by developing positive methods to disrupt the disrupters.

Are You A Food Addict?

W

omen lament over their mufÀn tops that seemed to appear when they awakened one morning in their forties or Àfties. Men lament, but less so, over their Buddha bellies. Patients tell me they have tried every diet, yet they can’t lose weight like they could when they were younger. What happened? In the past they could eat less or exercise more and Àve pounds would disappear without the Herculean effort they must now employ to lose any weight --- only to have the lost weight Tuickly return.

Being overweight seems to be an American hallmark. Since clearly 66 percent are overweight or obese, being overly large just doesn’t seem abnormal. Then, if you have the opportunity to do some European travel, you make an insightful observation. Europeans aren’t as plump as Americans. If you are a thinker, you wonder why Europeans are able to remain lean despite eating fatty foods and drinking wine with meals. How to reverse being overweight is multilayered and complex. How lovely it would be if the calories in calories out theory, also called eat less and exercise more theory cured our obesity epidemic. Unlike Americans, Europeans don’t ingest a tsunami amount of toxins and antibiotics in their food supply. There are more than 600,000 FDA approved processed foods full of chemicals on grocery shelves. These toxins have created a one trillion dollar food industry ensuring that seven of ten Americans will be overweight and unable to lose weight. Europeans don’t take cholesterol-lowering medications known to lower every single hormone that is already in peril (aging also lowers hormonal levels), and don’t have a food supply that is legally engineered to be addictive. The one trillion dollar food industry has created a whole new breed of food scientists dedicated to inventing addictive foods to trigger your bliss point. When you eat these foods, you need more sugar and flour to feel normal. Food companies have FDA approval to knowingly create foods that are addictive --- just like the tobacco industry knew they were addicting you. Medicine doesn’t presently have a test to see if someone has the genetic potential to be a cocaine/alcohol/opioid addict. I often tell the story of two people who go to a party and try cocaine for the first time. One is able to use cocaine occasionally and the other will desperately need cocaine to carve out a life because they have the genetic potential to be a cocaine addict. The gene wouldn’t have been turned on if they never tried cocaine. Genes can be turned on or off by our behavior. Unfortunately, those who live in America must eat to live. And since there isn’t

a test to see if you the have the potential for food addiction, your behavior and body habitus shows you the answer. To ascertain if my patient has the predilection for food addiction I ask, “What happens to your appetite if you eat some crappy food? “ Many tell me “one M & M will send me on a sugar/flour binge, or I feel awful if I don’t eat every two to three hours. They are telling me that they are addicted to our FDA approved Western diet. It is the rare person who can have some dessert once a week and return to eating clean. When you see an enormous person, do you judgmentally say to yourself, why don’t they just stop eating so much? Of course overeating leads to being overweight or obese. But if you are a thinker, you begin to wonder why the majority of Americans overeat and can’t imagine life without bread, pretzels, and desserts “for a treat. Sugar is eight times as addictive as cocaine. We are a species that is hard wired to seek pleasure. When rats are exposed to intravenous cocaine or intravenous sugar (even diet sodas), they choose sugar. The biggest threat to your health is not how high your cholesterol is, rather, it is whether or not you have a food addiction that cannot be controlled by willpower. Sugar decreases metabolism, and activates food addiction. Food addiction is the elephant in the room no one sees. Seventy percent of Americans are overweight and complain of greater than ten symptoms, which usually warrants being prescribed ten or more medications. Being overweight/obese will surely bankrupt us, regardless who pays for “health care. Too many of our children are too fat to enroll in the military and the prediction they may not live as long as their parents is beginning to sound like it may be true. All calories are not created equal. The quality of calories really matters. How do you know if you’re eating real food? You’re eating real food if you have to chew, if it would rot if you left it on the kitchen counter, if the food label contains more than five ingredients with words you understand, and most likely, if it didn’t come in a box, container, or package. Eating real food doesn’t turn on the feel good brain chemical Dopamine. But eating sugary foods lights up a brain scan, appearing like the patient just did a line of cocaine! So now you may be able to self-diagnose whether or not you have a food addiction. If you do, it would be wise to have a little nervous breakdown, then trash all the not real food from your pantry and refrigerator. I’ll quote the Italian gastroenterologist who lectured, “Americans must start cooking again so they know what they’re eating. I foresee the day when there will be 28-day programs to detox from food. what they re eating. I foresee the day when there will causes your gut to be unhealthy. For now, try to clean up your diet, and stop using hand Visit www.drrobertamorgan.com be 28-day programs to detox from food. sanitizer. Oh, and take a world-class probiotic on an empty stomach.

Sun Damage: 5 The Dangers of Tanning – Indoors or Outdoors

Have you ever been mistaken for Casper the Friendly Ghost? You may still value a glowing tan, even if you’re not quite that white. Many people think and feel a little color gives them a healthier – maybe even sexier – look. So isn’t it ironic that your glorious tan can actually put you at risk? When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation – whether from the sun or a tanning device – your skin reacts by producing more melanin. Melanin is the pigment that darkens your skin. Tanning can cause premature wrinkling, skin spots, and a “lovely leathery look down the road. In addition, it can also suppress your body’s immune system and cause eye damage or allergic reactions.1 Some people can develop skin cancer from too much UV radiation. Were you one of those kids who shunned skin protection or overstayed your time in the sun? If so, you probably had a severe sunburn or two, putting you at greater risk for the deadliest form of skin cancer: melanoma.1 What’s worse is the sun isn’t the only culprit! Tanning devices like sunlamps used in tanning beds are more dangerous than previously thought. A few years ago, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) looked at 19 studies conducted over 25 years. It found a link between indoor tanning and two kinds of skin cancer, as well as melanoma of the eye. The risk of skin melanoma increased by 75 percent when indoor tanning started before age 35. As a result, the agency moved these devices into

the highest cancer risk category: “carcinogenic to already offer this protection, check with your eye humans.â€?1 care professional. Against All Odds The Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary in Mays Landing, NJ is no ordinary animal rescue. It is a place where unbelievable things happen...happy things! It has been described as a “miraculous placeâ€? where real magic happens every single day. It’s a place of healing and comfort where everyone is loved despite their challenges or disabilities. It’s a place of inspiration where you can see things that most people simply cannot comprehend such as a turkey and skunk playing Frisbee with the dogs, a goose KPYLJ[PUN [YHMĂ„J VY L]LU H JOPJRLU YPKPUN HU ¸<ILYš goat around the farm, having the time of his life! The Funny Farm is a real place with plenty of free parking where you can go take your kids and grandkids without admission, and see actual miracles. Most of the animals roam free and will come right up to your car to welcome you! One of these animals is Chuck. He’s the most beautiful German Shepard. As a puppy, he was brought to Laurie Zaleski, President of the Funny Farm, in desperation literally clinging to life unable to eat. He was rushed to the veterinarian and examined and X-rayed. It was quickly learned that he had “mega-esophagusâ€? and food was just not getting into his stomach. His case was so severe that surgery was not an option. Time was running out. The news was devastating. Every vet who saw him suggested a feeding tube or to euthanize him because his “quality of lifeâ€? would not be like other dogs. Laurie spent countless hours researching “mega-esophagusâ€?. She was determined and stopped at nothing to find a way to keep Chuck’s food in his

stomach! Laurie started by feeding Chuck sitting upright a car seat and fed him with a baby bottle with blended puppy food into a “doggie smoothie. It worked!! He loved it, and he was gaining weight. Soon, Chuck outgrew his car seat. Today, Chuck sits in a special chair so that gravity can help keep food into his stomach. He naps for 20 min after every meal 7 times a day. At best, doctors said he would live 6 months. Chuck is now 4 1/2 years old! Against all odds, he survived and his life was saved. Today, thousands of people come each year to see Chuck. He is a real animal celebrity! He has fans all over the world! Like many animals at the farm, he has a job and loves to go to work. He’s the “Director of Security! He also oversees the entire “Geese Police Department. Chuck runs and plays like every other dog. He has no idea he’s different. Neither does any other animal at the Funny Farm. “He just sees himself as Chuck who has a really cool chair, says Zaleski. At the Funny Farm, the animals don’t care what kind of car you drive, what religion you are, or what kind of food you eat. They have unconditional love. All efforts are made to give them the best life possible and in return they teach us so much. With many volunteers and donors, over 500 animals now have the best life! Against all odds, Chuck didn’t just survive, he thrived and still does, hopefully for many years to come. Laurie has saved the lives of many other dogs just like Chuck, who’s parents once thought there was no hope, just by educating them. Against all odds, Chuck is a huge part of the farm and inspires us all to look past the things you can’t do and appreciate all the things you can do. Pretty soon, you won’t even remember the things you can’t do!

Smart Snacking

“To snack or not to snack. That is the question”--Unknown

W

hen we snack-- eat in between meals—it can help us suppress our hunger pangs, give us a boost of energy, and deliver needed nutrients that help our body to function at its best. However, we must do so wisely. Careless snacking that occurs due to habit, boredom, stress or frustration can create a landmine and cause our waistline to explode.

of fat, 8 grams of fiber, and 17 grams of protein. In fact, it is considered a complete source of protein—providing all of the essential amino acids that our body needs. Research has also shown that people who consume this soybean have a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, breast and prostate cancer, depression, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Cottage Cheese is a protein powerhouse. One cup of cottage cheese

Unfortunately, with the busy lives we lead, we are a victim to convenience. Many easy, grab-and-go snacks are loaded with calories, fat, and salt, providing little to no nutritional value. While an occasional treat is fine, consuming unhealthy snacks consistently can contribute to the development of a range of health problems. But it does not have to be that way. When mindful snacking is kept below 200 calories and is rich in protein, fiber, and other nutrients, it can be an invaluable tool to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. And while it may take a little planning on our part, there are a number of fun, tasty, and good-for-us snack options.

Dr. Nina’s What You Need to Know About Some Smart Foods To Snack On Nuts are Àlled with protein, Àber, healthy fats, and important vitamins and minerals. Research has shown that nuts can improve heart

health and weight, as well as lower cholesterol levels and cancer risk. When choosing to get “nutty,” there are countless options and various benefits. Walnuts contain the most antioxidants of all nuts and are high in omega-3 fatty acids and pistachios are high in fiber, for instance. But when snacking, remember to only consume a handful of nuts—they are high in calories and fat.

contains 28 grams of casein protein. Compared to other forms of protein--whey, soy-- casein enters our bloodstream more slowly and steadily. This provides vital amino acids that can last for hours. Milk is a great companion to a piece of fruit or other healthful snack options. Just one cup of non-

fat milk contains 8 grams of protein and only 80 calories, while providing nearly 30% of our Daily Recommended Value of calcium. If non-fat milk is unavailable, not to fret. Choosing 2% milk provides slightly more calories and grams of fat, but has a similar amount of protein, calcium, and carbohydrates. Hard boiled egg is an excellent source of protein, all B vitamins, and minerals, such as phosphorus, iodine, and selenium. Eggs are also

one of only a handful of foods that are naturally a good source of vitamin D, which helps build strong bones with the help of calcium. One large egg contains just 71 calories, no carbohydrates, and 5 grams of fat (7 percent of our daily recommended intake). They also make a great pairing for veggies and whole grains. Food is fuel for our body. And when we choose wisely, whether it is a meal or snack, what we put in our mouths needs to be a mindful decision for our best health.

Nina Radcliff, M.D., is a practicing physician; a Board CertiÀed Anesthesiologist and member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists where she serves on committees for young physicians and communications. Often called upon by media to speak to medical health topics impacting our lives today, Dr. Nina is passionate about sharing truths for healthy, balanced living as well as wide preventative measures.

Fruits and veggies are some of the most refreshing, portable, and long-lasting snacks. Add to that, they are synonymous with good health—

low in calories and fat (if any), and jam-packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber. Consider mixing Mother Nature’s delectable delights with another snack item that contains protein to get the best bang for our snack. Greek yogurt is a double threat—tasty and versatile. It can be eaten plain, mixed with whole grains or fruit, used as a base for dips, or substituted for other creamy food products (sour cream, heavy cream). Compared to regular yogurt, it has a creamier texture as well as less lactose and sugar. And in just one cup, Greek yogurt provides over 20 grams of protein and is an excellent source of calcium and probiotic bacteria. Edamame is a fun, peas-in-a-pod mimicking veggie that is low in calories but Àlled with plenty of protein, iron, antioxidants, and calcium. In fact, one cup of shelled edamame contains 189 calories, 8 grams

Here Comes Summer! S

ummer is obviously the most bountiful produce season here in New Jersey, bringing us a colorful selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and lots of heat and humidity. Naturally, it makes sense for us to get out of the kitchen and enjoy the grill.

BARBECUED SHORT RIBS - Serves 8

CANTALOUPE SHERBET - Serves 12

5 pounds of beef chuck short ribs 1 ½ cups ketchup ½ cup white vinegar 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed 1 T Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp lime zest 1 ½ tsp dry mustard ž tsp garlic powder

1 small cantaloupe, very ripe and cut into bite size chunks 1 quart milk LU]LSVWLZ \UĂ…H]VYLK NLSH[PU ž cup light corn syrup ½ cup sugar 3 drops yellow food color, if desired 1 drop red food color, if desired d

In large Dutch oven (about 8 qt), cover short ribs with water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 2 hours until ribs are fork tender. Remove to a platter, cover and refrigerate. About 1 hour before you are ready to serve, heat grill to medium and oil grates. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Place ribs on the grill and grill for 20-25 minutes or until hot throughout, basting occasionally with the sauce mixture and turning often. It is only natural to serve corn on the cob with ribs! The corn can be grilled or prepared to your liking – make sure to have plenty of napkins handy! After working at the grill, you’ll want to enjoy a cool treat. Put out scoops of this sherbet with a colorful selection of fresh berries and a bit of mint, and you’ll be the star of the show! (It might seem like a bit of work to make this, but it is SO worth it! Start early in the day.)

Blend cantaloupe and 1 cup milk in a food processor until very smooth. Sett aside. Put 1 cup milk in a 3 qt saucepan and sprinkle the gelatin into it. Cook over medium low heat until gelatin is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in n the cantaloupe mixture, the remaining milk and the remaining ingredients. Don’t worry if the mixture looks curdledd here. Pour the mixture into a 13x9 pan, cover and freeze for about 3 hours or until partially frozen, stirring periodically. Put the mixture into a large bowl that has been well chilled and with a mixer at medium speed, beat until smooth but still partially frozen. Return to pan, cover and freeze until fully frozen, about 3 hours. Let stand at room temperature for about 10 minutes prior to serving.

Women’s History

71

Mother Theresa On May 13, 2017, my family celebrated my grandmother’s 100th birthday. The celebration was attended by family, friends and community members. There were two Proclamations presented to her from both the Township of Mantua and Gloucester County. It was truly an amazing experience. I never dreamed that I would have had a grandparent live to be 100 years old. I recall as a child thinking that my grandparents were “so” old and yet they were only in their 50s and 60s at the time. This feature is a historical snapshot of the life lived by an amazing woman who continues to touch the lives of many in her own special way even at the age of 100. Theresa DiBernardi was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 13, 1917. Theresa was one of five children. Theresa’s parents (my great-grandparents) arrived to the United States from Italy and landed in South Philadelphia. Theresa’s father died from TB in his 40s and Theresa’s mother died from breast cancer when Theresa was only 16 years old. After Theresa’s mother became ill, Theresa went to work in an attempt to support her siblings. Theresa went to work at a “tailor” shop called Goodi Mate, where she met the love of her life, Gene Concordia. Gene (otherwise known as my grandfather) was a true old-fashioned tailor. He went to design school and had the ability to hand-make suits, pants, and anything you wanted. Theresa and Gene married in 1935. After their marriage, Theresa and Gene took in Theresa’s siblings and they all lived together until one by one all of the siblings got married and moved out of the family home. Theresa had one sister who was only 10 years old when their mother had passed away. Theresa raised her siblings; however, “Mary” remained with Theresa until after she was married and ended up purchasing her first home a few houses away. Theresa and Gene had five children of their own: Vera, Louis, Ronald, Gene and Johnny. Theresa and Gene raised their children in Mantua, New Jersey, where they lived together for 49 years in a three-bedroom, 1½-bath home. Theresa had remained in that same house until recently, when her age left her unable to manage her split-level home independently. Theresa also did not drive until much later in life, and she was driving well into her late 80s back and forth to the local market. Theresa and Gene were active members of the local Catholic Church, where she attended weekly Mass services with the entire family. I recall as a young child attending services with my father’s entire family on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings and then getting together for family dinners after church. Sunday dinners at my grandmother Theresa’s house were always an event, the grown-ups in the dining room and the children in the kitchen. I could not wait to graduate to the dining room! Although I must say I preferred the kitchen after I was privileged enough to sit at the dining room table. Everyone contributed to some aspect of the family meal. If my grandmother Theresa was making homemade raviolis, everyone was at the table prepping the table with flour, stuffing ricotta cheese and cutting the edges of those delicious cheese squares! My grandmother was the matriarch of the family unit. As mentioned above, Theresa and Mary had a very close relationship. Although they were only six years apart, Theresa was a mother to Mary. They did everything together and even

The County Woman Magazine

worked at the same candy factory until Theresa had her youngest son. Mary would eventually relocate to California to be close to her children and Theresa would visit with her. Being born in 1917 afforded Theresa many life experiences. Theresa was only three years old when the 19th Amendment was passed which paved the way for her to vote when she became of age. Imagine living in a world where you were told what to wear and not afforded the freedoms that we have today. Theresa has also lived through the Great Depression and World War II, through which she has seen family and friends recruited for active duty. One of Theresa’s sons also served in the military. Theresa managed a household in a time where food supplies were limited. Again, she was a young woman with stressors that most adults face today. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the economy was a bit more stable, Theresa and Gene would often take trips to Atlantic City. They enjoyed gambling and visiting their son who worked for the casino industry at the time. Theresa was introduced to many celebrities through the years that included Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett and yes, even Donald Trump! Theresa had celebrated many good times with family and had also endured many unfortunate events throughout her life. She has not only had to say goodbye to her parents at a young age, my grandfather passed away in his early 70s; her son, who was in the prime of his life, passed away in his 40s; and last year her son-in-law, who proclaimed that she would outlive everyone in the family, passed away. Theresa has displayed amazing resilience in the face of darkness. Theresa’s remaining children continue to care for her and manage her older adult responsibilities. Theresa was a woman who managed a household through war, financial crisis, grief and at times loneliness and yet always had a cup of coffee ready for visitors. Theresa was an amazingly self-sufficient woman who was incredibly independent. Theresa currently resides in a nursing care facility. The current family totals include 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Amazingly, she knows each and every name. We’re Making Dreams Come True Arts & Crafts

Residents enjoy exploring their artistic side at SGLC. Sometimes they paint; other times, they make crafts. We celebrate their art with displays throughout the Home.

Music & Drum Circles

Music plays a regular part in our activities here at SGLC. Whether it’s a concert on our Boardwalk, a sing-a-long, or a drum circle, our residents enjoy music throughout the week. We’ve found that music connects them to memories, and often brings a smile to their faces.

Baking & Gardens Cooking and baking are some of our favorite activities, especially when we get to sample the results. We also enjoy cooking demonstrations, such as the recent one which featured kosher shrimp! In our kitchens we go farm to fork by pulling ingrdients from our outdoor gardens from plants our residents cultivated.

Computers & Skype Residents love to watch music videos or go onto Facebook on the Never 2 Late Computers which makes technology accessible for older adults. They also enjoy Skype sessions with family members! The system is built on a picture-based touch-screen interface that makes it easy to navigate.

Summer Sizzlers Summer means Summer Sizzlers! The Sizzlers are a group of teens that works and volunteers at SGLC. The students assist in programs, transport residents, help with food service, and accompany residents on trips. In the process, they get to know our residents, and form friendships.
