2017, A New Year, A New Dentist
Just how important are first impressions? Most medical and dental offices have only a few minutes to capture the confidence and trust of a patient. What distinguishes DS Dental from other professional practices is the caring and trust that the staff generates in the patient. The more connections that the patient has with the dentist and her staff, the more comfortable is the bond that forms between them. Whether it is an adult or a child, the patient’s first experience is with the dental hygienist. It is at this time that a patient’s questions and concerns are addressed, information about the patient’s dental history is collected, and educating the patient on his or her oral health needs occurs. The hygienist then cleans and polishes the patient’s teeth. Although many dental offices schedule 30–45 minutes for new patients in the hygiene schedule, DS Dental schedules 90 minutes. Dr. Spano also sees the patient for a comprehensive oral exam, and discusses future treatment and patient priorities.
Dr. Spano believes that good dentistry includes the ability of the patient to fit the treatment into his or her life, and takes into account an awareness of what is happening with the patient’s budget, work schedule, family, and time restrictions. High-pressure sales tactics do not happen at DS Dental. In addition, DS Dental is on the cutting edge of new dental technology with new products like the GLO Whitening System and Invisalign, the alternative to metal braces. Going to the dentist does not have to be an unpleasant experience. DS Dental patients are frequently laughing and having animated conversations while in the dental chair (which also has heat and massage features), immersed in warm neck wraps and enjoying their favorite shows on Netflix. Recently a patient gave Dr. Spano one of the best compliments when he said, “You are going to be my dentist because you listen to me.” The perception of respect for patients is important to the DS Dental family and can be observed in ontime appointments, nurturing relationships and great teamwork. So if you feel that an enhanced dental experience could be in your future, pick up the phone and call DS Dental to join our team!

Changing Jobs? Take Your 401(k) And ... Roll It!
I
f you’ve lost your job, or are changing jobs, you may be wondering what to do with your 401(k) plan account. It’s important to understand your options.
Don’t Spend It, Roll It!
While this pool of dollars may look attractive, don’t spend it unless you absolutely need to. If you take a distribution you’ll be taxed, at ordinary income tax rates, on the entire value of your account except for any after-tax or Roth 401(k) contributions you’ve made. And, if you’re not yet age 55, an additional 10% penalty may apply to the taxable portion of your payout. (Special rules may apply if you receive a lump-sum distribution and you were born before 1936, or if the lump-sum includes employer stock.) If your vested balance is more than $5,000, you can leave your money in your employer’s plan until you reach normal retirement age. But your employer must also allow you to make a direct rollover to an IRA or to another employer’s 401(k) plan. As the name suggests, in a direct rollover the money passes directly from your 401(k) plan account to the IRA or other plan. This is preferable to a “60-day rollover,” where you get the check and then roll the money over yourself, because your employer has to withhold 20% of the taxable portion of a 60-day rollover. You can still roll over the entire amount of your distribution, but you’ll need to come up with the 20% that’s been withheld until you recapture that amount when you file your income tax return.
Should I Roll Over To An IRA?
You need to weigh all of the factors, and make a decision based on your own needs and priorities. It’s best to have a professional assist you with this, since the decision you make may have significant consequences--both now and in the future.
Reasons To Roll Over To An IRA:
• You generally have more investment choices with an IRA. You typically may freely move your money around to the various investments offered by your IRA trustee, and you may divide up your balance among as many of those investments as you want. • You can freely allocate your IRA dollars among different IRA trustees/ custodians. There’s no limit on how many direct, trustee-to-trustee IRA transfers you can do in a year. This gives you flexibility to change trustees often if you are dissatisfied with investment performance or customer service. It can also allow you to have IRA accounts with more than one institution for added diversification.
• An IRA may give you more flexibility with distributions. Your distribution options in a 401(k) plan depend on the terms of that particular plan, and your options may be limited. However, with an IRA, the timing and amount of distributions is generally at your discretion (until you reach age 70½ and must start taking required minimum distributions in the case of a traditional IRA). • You can roll over (essentially “convert”) your 401(k) plan distribution to a Roth IRA. You’ll have to pay taxes on the amount you roll over (minus any after-tax contributions you’ve made), but any qualified distributions from the Roth IRA in the future will be tax free.
Understanding your complete financial picture is an important step in planning your retirement. Old 401(k)’s and other retirement
accounts left behind at previous employers can make your investments difficult to manage. Many advantages of these plans, including loans and matching contributions, are lost when you leave your employer. An IRA rollover can offer you more investment options, flexibility, and control of your retirement assets. Your Financial Advisor can help you understand and if appropriate, consolidate your accounts to simplify your investments.
Your Financial Advisor will make the process of rolling over assets to an IRA convenient for you. Your advisor will assist you in
evaluating your rollover options, completing your paperwork, opening an IRA account, transferring your funds, and selecting investments. And if your rollover involves more complex issues such as special tax treatment of company stock through Net Unrealized Appreciation (NUA), Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) upon reaching age 70 ½, or Inherited (Stretch) IRAs, your Financial Advisor has the expertise to help you.

Degree in Public Relations and Advertising from Rowan University and a Master’s Degree in Public Relations from Southern New Hampshire University. Working with the many talented contributing writers, editors and designers is the best part of my job. I have learned so much through reading their educational articles and I’m grateful to work with other friendly, accomplished and knowledgeable individuals and business owners. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and boyfriend, Greg. Together, we have four energetic children, and by children I mean a 10-year-old Chocolate Lab, Bear and three cats, Bruiser, Bailey and Midnight. In April, my family was blessed with my adorable nephew, Hunter Chapman, who has bought tremendous joy into our lives. I look forward to expanding my career at the County Woman Publications. It is exciting seeing what the future has in store for the publications and myself!
Jessica Sochocky,
My history with The County Woman began
to learn all of the facets of this very exciting industry. I’ve always enjoyed meeting with local business owners and medical professionals to learn about what they do. Helping businesses establish themselves as experts in their field while providing solid information for the women and families of each county we serve is a mission I am proud of. To hear a client tell us they’ve seen exponential growth from the articles we circulate, and a reader thanking us for helpful information they’ve read in our magazine, makes my job incredibly rewarding! I’ve lived in Atlantic County for 25 years. Throughout my time working with The County Woman, I also worked with Jaguar, Land Rover and BMW, while continuing my weekly performances as a pianist/singer in The Society Club at the Borgata for the past eight years. I take the most pride in being a Mom to my son and daughter, two of the greatest gifts in my life.
In addition, we would like to thank all of the following talented individuals that also contribute to making the County Woman Publications a huge success.

I with my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Marketing I graduated from Widener University in 2015
and am the newest staff member at the County Woman Publications. When I started working for the County Woman Publications, I knew immediately this is where I wanted to have a career. It has allowed me to further my interest in graphic design while being creative in a fast paced business environment. I enjoy designing ads and pages alongside our very talented and experienced graphic designers and learning more about each of the amazing businesses that we feature in these publications. When I am not in the office, I enjoy going exploring with my friends and boyfriend, Mike, either climbing waterfalls or taking long drives to broaden our horizon. It is exciting finding new and different places in and around New Jersey. In addition, I enjoy curling up and watching movies with my two cats, Bella and Little. As a current resident in Atlantic County, I am excited and proud to see all of the businesses grow with each issue throughout the county. I look forward to continue in helping our clients provide valuable information to our readers in each issue.

Are You Thinking You May Need A Face Lift?
Dr. Nicola DeLorio is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed her residency training in Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery at Saint Barnabas Union Hospital Health Care System. She has practiced in Linwood since 1998. Dr. DeLorio is board certified in Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery. Additionally she holds certifications in Botox®, Restylane®, Juvaderm®,Sculptra® and a comprehensive array of laser treatments. Dr. Delorio is a Fellow of the Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.
Looking tired? Feel like your face is drooping? Thinking you may need a face lift? Well, good news: there are quicker, safer ways to eliminate these problems without surgery and with minimal recovery or downtime. Most people look at their face and focus on one area—the folds next to their mouth, under-eye bags, jowls, etc. What they don’t realize is these problems are all related and, if approached correctly, are easily remedied. The combination of filler to replace lost volume and CoolSculpting to eliminate jowls and sculpt the jowl line can restore a youthful look in no time! Often a client will see bags under their eyes and think they need blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, but in reality they have lost volume below the lower lid, which gives the appearance of the lower eyelid being puffy. That loss of volume in the cheek causes the skin to sag and creates the deep nasolabial folds that run from the corner of the nose to the mouth. Replacing volume in the cheek area creates a smooth transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek and eliminates the appearance of dark circles and heavy eyelids. In addition, replacing volume in the cheek lifts the cheek and often eliminates the nasolabial fold crease. Oftentimes clients with volume loss will note a line running from the corner of the mouth toward the jaw. This is appropriately referred to as marionette lines. By replacing volume in this area, it will turn the corner of the mouth up and remove the frowning appearance that occurs. Lastly, the pre-auricular area and cheekbone will often appear hollow. There are many fillers used for volumizing the face. Radiesse is a calcium-based filler placed deep in the tissues that naturally adds volume. Results are immediate and risks and complications usually consist of temporary swelling and bruising. This product usually lasts around a year and then the treatment is repeated. For the best look, a thinner filler, such as Belotero Balance or Restylane Silk, can be layered on top to erase more superficial lines etched in the skin and to treat the very corner of the lower lid, called the tear trough. These thinner fillers are placed more superficially and do not cause lumps or discoloration in thin-skinned areas such as the eyelid. If you’re searching for a longer-lasting result, Sculptra can also be used to volumize the face. Sculptra is not a filler but a product that causes your body to make collagen and naturally replace lost volume. The results take three to four months or more to develop. The risks are lumps, temporary swelling and bruising. The results last around two years. The newest long-term filler gives you the best of both worlds: immediate results and long-lasting results up to five years! Bellafill is a combination of collagen to give you immediate volumizing with PMMA that, again, causes you to naturally replace your collagen, and its volumizing effects last an amazing five years. Bellafill can also be used above the lip and in the tear trough area, which Radiesse and Sculptra cannot. Risks and complications are usually temporary bruising and swelling. Once volume has been replaced, patients are still often left with some jowling or fullness under the chin. The addition of CoolSculpting will eliminate these areas and provide the client with a nicely sculpted, youthful jaw line. CoolSculpting using the Cool Mini handpiece allows precise removal of excess fat in these areas. The CoolSculpting technology freezes the fat cells and the body eliminates them. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and is painless and easy. Afterward there is no recovery; you may return to your normal activity immediately. Results take one to four months to see. Every individual requires a personalized consult to determine the best methods to return their face to a more youthful look. Always make sure your doctor is board certified in facial plastic or plastic surgery to ensure expert care.

Number of Treatments Required and Results
People often ask how long it will take to remove their tattoo, and will it be able to be removed completely. Laser tattoo removal typically takes multiple treatments. That is because tattoo ink is deposited deep into the skin and multiple treatments are needed to reach all of the ink and break it up completely. In addition, tattoos of various sizes, colors and ages may respond differently to treatment. Some colors are more difficult to clear completely than others. Therefore, it is impossible to know in the very beginning how many treatments will ultimately be needed or how completely it will be removed. However, our new enlighten™ picosecond laser has been shown to be faster and more effective than the prior lasers used for tattoo removal. In fact, many people can expect to obtain excellent results in half the number of treatments, or less, than with prior lasers. Our doctor can give you a good idea of the number of treatments that will be needed after your tattoo is examined.

Feeling Sluggish After The Holidays? Time To Detox! Here Are Some Tips. Our body is well equipped to detoxify on its own, but in today’s world we need all the help we can get. We are exposed to more chemicals and toxins than ever before. So here are a few tips on moving things out.
1. Clean eating: That’s right, diet is number one! Stop putting in
garbage. Eat only quality food, organic as much as possible, especially with animal products. For produce, look up the dirty dozen and clean fifteen; this will tell you which you should buy organic and which don’t have to be. Ease up on or cut out sugar and gluten. Lastly, avoid alcohol. 2. Sweat it out: Your skin is not only the largest organ in the body but great at removing toxins. This can be done in many ways. If you can get into an infrared sauna, that’s your best bet—AND WE HAVE ONE HERE. If not, try bathing in Epsom salt or clay. 3. Ion Cleanse foot bath: The largest pores are on the bottom of your feet, so this is another great and easy way to detoxify, especially heavy metals. We are the only one in the area with this machine, so come check it out! 4. Massage: How does massage help the body detox, exactly? The rhythmic strokes, varying pressure and light stretches applied to muscles, tissues and organs during massage therapy help stimulate
the circulatory system. It works sort of like a sponge: when pressure is applied to the tissue, toxins are literally “squeezed” out from in between the muscle fibers and cells. They’re released into the circulatory system for easier elimination.
• ACUPUNCTURE • NUTRITION • MASSAGE • ION CLEANSE FOOT BATH • INFRARED SAUNA • HEALTH COACHING • NATURAL PRODUCTS Detox Massage Special:
Three 60-minute sessions for a Renewal and Recharge to your system. Your choice of two detoxifying essential oils applied with varying pressure, light stretching, and slow to vigorous strokes all aid in the body’s removal of toxins so you feel refreshed and energized. $180.00 – a $240.00 Value

Discover the Benefits of Permanent Makeup The Beau Institute is restoring confidence in men and women with new advanced cosmetic procedures
B
Beau Institute’s clinic is renown for Permanent Cosmetic procedures and is a leading professional school that trains permanent cosmetic and medical professionals on the latest and most advanced corrective cosmetic techniques. Rose Marie Beauchemin, founder of the clinic and school, is a world-recognized expert in the field of permanent cosmetics and micro pigmentation with over 25 years of experience in both the area of application and training. For the general public Beau Institute offers an extensive list of permanent cosmetic procedures such as: 1. Microblading 2. Permanent Brows 3. Permanent Eyeliner 4. Permanent Lip Color and Reshaping 5. 3-Dimensional Areola Nipple Tattooing 6. Scar Camouflage. Microblading is one of the most popular procedures, the latest technique which creates very fine natural looking hairstrokes to get the perfect brow as recently featured on Good Morning America. Beauchemin, known as the “Queen of Brows”, uses her exclusive system called CPR (Control Point Remedy) to design brows to suit your face in its entirety while complimenting every feature. The eyebrow is the “power feature” of the face and a well-designed brow has the potential to create a youthful lift. The arch of the brows tends to thin out first and this is the part that gives lift to the cheekbones. The detailed techniques lend movement, depth, and dimension. Brows appear totally natural and lend personal freedom from the laborious chore of applying them each morning. The permanent brows sometimes give our elated clients an additional 30 minutes of sleep each morning, and save them the additional re-application often required throughout the day.
3D Areola Nipple Tattooing helps postmastectomy clients regain a more positive appearance and rebuild self-confidence, both physically and Before mentally. In fact, it is often referred to as the “finishing touch” to the long and arduous journey of breast cancer survival. The Beau Institute is also known for their annual After “Day of Hope” event which was recently held in Mt. Laurel offices where practitioners spend the day performing complimentary 3-Dimensional Areola Nipple Tattooing for post-mastectomy patients. The main purpose of the event is to empower breast cancer survivors and to inspire hope in the community.
ABOUT FOUNDER ROSE MARIE BEAUCHEMIN
As a practitioner, Rose Marie’s artistry is unparalleled. Her extensive training and experience include facial morphology, paramedical cosmetics, color theory and analysis. She is known among colleagues as “The Brow Doctor” for her ability to create seemingly natural and beautiful hair simulated eyebrows personally designed for her clients’ unique faces. Rose Marie customizes each permanent cosmetics procedure to flatter each of her clients’ individual features, whether it is eyeliner, lip liner/reshaping, 3-dimensional areola tattooing, or scar camouflage. By using the most effective topical anesthetics, pigments, and advanced techniques currently available in the permanent makeup industry, Rose Marie has a fundamental understanding of how to achieve the best results.
R
Founder Rose Beauchemin states, “With my years of experience in this field, my main goal is to give my patients the confidence they always wanted, and by teaching my students the techniques, it is just a great chain reaction of people helping people. My hope for the future is to continue to teach and perform these life changing procedures for years to come.”
R
The Beau Institute continues to generate success stories year after year, patient after patient a real tribute to Rose Marie’s commitment to excellence.

Be Chic All Year Long When Kevin Heck moved back to New Jersey several years ago, he was surprised at the lack of shopping options for women in the local area. He adds, “There is an extreme focus on discounted merchandise in South Jersey.” Having lived in three major cities prior, while working in corporate retail, Kevin decided to open Seagrass Boutique and apply his creativity, talent and professional knowledge. By focusing on brands that are unique, eclectic, timeless and of higher quality, his selections easily transition from season to season.
ACW: Tell us what is on the “Trend Table” for this season. What are a few must-have items for 2017?
Kevin: 2017 is all about the skinny jean. We will feature an array of styles in gorgeous muted color palettes. We are also taking the maxi dress to the next level as we introduce two new brands that play with unique patterns, details and fabrications. They speak to that woman who walks to her own beat.
ACW: Tell us about your new eco-friendly line.
Kevin: In Spring, we are introducing a new ecofriendly line called “Threads 4 Thought”. It is a full lifestyle brand that is produced responsibly and supports sustainable initiatives.
ACW: Do you offer any sunglasses or statement eyewear?
ACW: What sets your boutique apart from other clothing stores? What makes Seagrass unique?
Kevin: Yes! In addition to our current brands RAEN & Quay Australia, we are proud to announce that we are now an exclusive dealer of TOM FORD eyewear. Luxurious, elegant and always classic, TOM FORD sunglasses are worn by high profile celebrities and refined fashionistas alike. TOM FORD offers the best quality on the market with each frame being hand made in Italy.
Kevin: All styles in the boutique are hand picked and some are new and exclusive to the area. We cater to different age groups of women and provide wardrobe staples that will last over time. Almost every clothing line is made in the United States and all of our jewelry is handmade. At Seagrass, you will receive a personalized service interaction. It’s almost like having your own stylist on Testimonial: standby.
ACW: How do you define “Coastal Fashion?”
Kevin: This refers to garments that are inspired by travel, comfort, and the arts. Coastal fashion not only feels luxurious, but is ready to be thrown on for any occasion or packed into a suitcase for that last minute trip. It’s about going through life with an ease that’s comfortable, alluring and inspiring.
“I love shopping here!!! If you like classy and unique, then Seagrass Boutique is for you. Every piece that I get is special. I love shopping local. Every time I go into the store there is always something new. Kevin has a great mix of styles for everyone!” - Kimberly

Leah Schwartz, owner/certified barre and pilates instructor
“Start where you are, grow from there, the practice is yours.”
My journey started with my love for barre. I connected with the fluidity of the movements and how my body felt. Pilates was natural progression. The more the I practiced, the more I desired to perfect my skills. In 2013 I began my training and certifications in Barre and in 2016 I completed my reformer certification from Balance Body. Throughout my education I have collaborated with mentors of varying practices that have diversified my technique and knowledge, and molded my abilities as an instructor.

Legal Documents For All Ages 18-118 What are the “top 3” legal documents everyone should have? 1) Advanced Medical Directive/Living Will 2) Durable General Power of Attorney 3) Last Will and Testament Which document is most important? Arguably, the documents are listed above in order of importance, meaning that the Advance Medical Directive/Living Will is arguably the most important. When a child reaches the age of eighteen (18) years, he or she becomes “legally competent,” and parents lose their right to make medical decisons for the child. In fact, the HIPAA privacy law can make it impossible for parents to gain access to the child’s medical information, let alone make medical decisions in the event the child becomes incapacitated. Of course, this same HIPAA privacy law applies to the elderly, and everyone in between. In order to allow your loved ones to have access to your medical information and make decisions for you when you can’t (without involving a court, you must have a properly signed and witnessed Advance Medical Directive/Living Will). What is a “Living Will”? The term “Living Will” was coined in the mid-1970’s following the Karen Ann Quinlan matter which reached the New Jersey Supreme Court. The Court strongly recommended in its opinion that every person over the age of eighteen (18) document in writing his or her wishes concerning life support. What is a “Health Care Proxy”? Is it the same as a “Living Will”? The New Jersey Advance Directive law went into effect in January, 1992. After that time, a Living Will became known by many different terms such as: • Advance Directive • Advance Medical Directive • Health Care Proxy • Health Care Power of Attorney • Medical Power of Attorney • Medical Proxy Directive I favor the term “Advance Medical Directive/Living Will” so that people can figure out from the title what it is. Why do they ask me for my Living Will when I go to the Hospital? In 1990, Congress passed a law, known as the “Patient Self-Determination Act” which requires all Hospitals & Nursing Homes to ask you, upon admission, whether you have an Advance Directive/Living Will, to follow the Directive if you have one, and to offer dispute resolution in the event there is a question regarding your Directive.
Part 1
What are the Legal Requirements to make a valid Living Will in New Jersey? In order to sign an Advance Directive, New Jersey and most other state laws require: 1) That the signer be over 18 and competent to sign a legal document and; 2) That the witnesses must attest to the fact that you are of sound mind and free of duress or undue influence when you sign the document and; 3) That the document be witnessed and/or notarized. a) New Jersey law requires either two (2) witnesses or a Notary Public. Pennsylvania law (which we must consider because many patients choose or end up in a Philadelphia hospital for certain procedures) requires two witnesses, and does not recognize just a notary. For this reason, I set up my Advance Directive document for both two witnesses and a Notary Public to sign. b) Your Witnesses cannot be one of the people you have designated as a Health Care Representative!! This is especially important to remember if you are signing your Living Will around the kitchen table. c) Your Witnesses cannot be your attending physician or the Administrator or Employee of the health care institution you are residing in unless he or she is also your relative. What are some of the issues to consider when making a Living Will? Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to choose a person or persons whom you know will carry out your wishes. You are not required to name family members, and you might not want to tell anyone who you have named if you feel that others may put pressure on you to change your mind. You should always name a “backup” person in the event your first Representative falls ill or dies. Remember, you can only sign this document NOW when you are healthy! In Part 2, we will discuss another document which all of us should have in place: Durable General Power of Attorney.

Do You Experience Constant Headaches?
It could be originating from your neck (cervical spine).
What are options for RELIEF? What are some structures in the cervical spine (neck) order to be directed to the right specialist as well as to order appropriate that are pain generators? diagnostic studies. The seven cervical spine vertebrae surround the spinal cord/canal and also create a What are some “Red Flags”? passageway for the spinal nerves which supply the upper extremities. The vertebrae are separated by discs. Other structures that help to maintain the integrity and structure of the spine include facet joints, vessels, muscles, tendons, ligaments, soft tissue and skin. Inflammatory processes caused by conditions that affect these structures are the usual culprits of discomfort in the posterior aspect of neck/head.
What are cervicogenic headaches and what population of individuals may be susceptible?
Pain from cervical spine structures that are referred to the head. According to the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition, there are two basic categories of headaches: primary and secondary. Primary headaches include those of vascular origin (cluster and migraine headaches) as well as those of muscular origin (tension headaches). Secondary headaches result from another source including inflammation as stated above or head and neck injuries. Cervicogenic headaches fall into a subgroup of secondary headaches. Anyone can be susceptible but they are common in those that weight train and those who have whiplash or concussive type injuries once brain or head injury are ruled out. Occupation may also play a role, such as those in which one may have to position neck in a particular stance for a prolonged period of time or improper posture. In the elderly, degenerative changes of the spine may be increase susceptibility.
How can cervicogenic headaches be diagnosed?
A thorough history and physical exam is the basis. Signs/symptoms are inclusive but are not limited to pain/stiffness in posterior cervical spine which precedes or exist with headaches. Can be unilateral (one sided) or bilateral (both sides). Head and neck pain can radiate to upper extremity or anterior (front) aspect of head. Physical examination is inclusive but not limited to locking of the cervical facet joints on affected side(s) causing limited range of motion of neck, discomfort with positioning, muscle spasms/trigger points in head and neck, and variations in muscle strength. There is no definitive diagnostic study. Imaging/diagnostic studies (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, electrodiagnostics) may prove normal but aid in ruling out significant pathology. Interventional procedures under fluoroscopic guidance such as diagnostic cervical medial branch nerve blocks with anesthetic aid in ruling out/in facet joints as a source of headaches. Occipital nerve blocks at base of skull may also aid in diagnosis.
Red flags warrant immediate medical evaluation. They are inclusive but not limited to headaches that are progressively worsening, headaches associated with high fever/stiff neck/ rash, sudden onset of severe headache, onset of headache after head injury, and problems with vision or dizziness.
What treatment interventions are recommended at Relievus for cervicogenic headaches?
Manual therapy (physical, chiropractic, massage) can facilitate healing and return of biomechanical function of head/neck structures. Modification of work-out routine/ home exercise approved by a professional is critical. Modalities such as cold/heat, ultrasound, transelectrical nerve stimulation (TENs) may accompany therapy for an additive effect. Medications used to manage pain are usually multimodal in nature and may include anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, topical patches/creams. Opioid therapy is reserved for severe or chronic intractable pain due to side effects as well as potential addictive qualities. Injections are an integral part of treatment and are considered if a patient is not responding to the aforementioned in a timely manner. Trigger point injections (TPI) with or without anesthetic/corticosteroid may aid in relief of cervicogenic headaches of muscular focus. Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENs) with TPI may provide further benefit. Interventional procedures under fluoroscopic guidance include cervical epidural corticosteroid injections for neck pain associated with pain radiating into upper extremities. As mentioned above, diagnostic cervical medial branch nerve blocks may provide short term benefit if the facet joints are the source and should be followed with therapeutic radiofrequency ablation/rhizotomy for longer lasting relief of pain.
***It is important to be evaluated by your primary care physician or neurologist initially if you have headaches to rule out any primary causes.
What are some differential diagnoses of headaches that can also present with neck pain?
Primary headaches such as migraine or tension type headaches can present with neck pain. Temperomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can also present with neck pain/ headaches. It is important to discuss your symptoms with your primary care provider in

Understanding Irritable Bowel Syndrome Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). As many as 1 in 5 Americans have signs and symptoms of IBS; a small percentage of these people seek medical help. More women in their reproductive years have IBS.
WHO IS MORE LIKELY TO GET IBS?
IBS is a chronic condition that needs to be managed long term. IBS commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, mucus, diarrhea and constipation. IBS is the most common condition seen by gastroenterologists. IBS does not increase the risk of cancer or more serious conditions. It can, however, cause a lot of inconvenience in a person’s life.
WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR IBS
The exact cause of IBS is unknown; a variety of factors can play a role. It can be due to abnormal contraction of intestinal wall muscles, oversensitive intestine, inflammation, or sometimes overgrowth of certain bacteria in the intestine.
TRIGGERS VARY FROM PERSON TO PERSON: Food: such as chocolate, fat, spices, fruits, beans, milk, broccoli, carbonated beverages and alcohol, to name a few! Keeping track of what food triggers symptoms is important to help guide a person to avoid symptoms. Stress: Mindfulness practice helps reduce stress in general. Mindfulness is the act of being aware of what you’re sensing and feeling at every moment, without interpretation or judgement. This is a way, scientific evidence shows, to reduce stress in people’s lives. Hormones: Many women feel their symptoms worsening around their menstrual periods. Other Illnesses: Sometimes infectious diarrhea (gastroenteritits) or overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines can trigger IBS.
Risk factors include young age (less than 45), female gender, family history of IBS, and conditions such as depression or anxiety. Personal history of sexual or domestic abuse can also be a risk factor. If you experience any of the following: rectal bleeding, abdominal pain that worsens or occurs at night, and/or weight loss.
HOW TO HELP YOUR DOCTOR HELP YOU CONTROL YOUR SYMPTOMS 1. Make a list of your symptoms and how long you have been experiencing them. 2. Make a list of what makes your symptoms better or worse. 3. Write down the stressors in your life. 4. Write down your questions to ask.
MY ADVICE AS YOUR DOCTOR Practice mindfulness every moment of your life. Mindfulness is the act of being aware of what you’re sensing and feeling at every moment, without interpretation or judgement. This trains your brain to come out of the incoherent randomness of a stressed brain to a focused, peaceful, healthy brain.

ACW: What sets your practice apart from others like it? Dr. Sood: We have a very simple philosophy that governs our practice: Patient First. In today’s ever-changing health care environment, the physician-patient relationship has been under constant strain. Our hope is to return to the basic premise of what health care should mean – a physician working on behalf of their patients to achieve the best possible outcomes in medicine. Our goal at Sood Center is to “humanize” the healthcare experience. In a private, comfortable environment, patients are able to openly discuss their goals for aesthetic enhancement. We offer a boutique practice driven by developing strong relationships within our community. Every patient is treated like a member of our family.
alter the course of someone’s life for the better. My time in medical school only solidified my belief in pursuing a career as a surgeon. I started my post-graduate training in General Surgery, spending five years performing a wide variety of trauma, head and neck, vascular, and minimally invasive techniques. I then spent an additional two years dedicated to training as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and eventually became a double board certified surgeon. I made this decision because I realized that although we can deliver “surgical cures,” as surgical specialists we sometimes fail to recognize the toll that treatments can take on individuals. Plastic surgery offers me the unique opportunities to problem solve with my patients and develop treatment strategies using art and advanced surgical techniques. Whether it is reconstructing a breast mound after cancer, or restoring a body form after massive weight loss or pregnancy, I strive to use surgery as a tool to complete the healing process. Although I may have given up the heroic life-saving surgeries I used to perform, I find far more satisfaction dedicating my career to improving the quality of life of my patients.
ACW: How do you stay current with advances made in your field? Dr. Sood: Plastic Surgery is a rapidly evolving field with major advances in aesthetic and reconstructive medicine. As patients highlight their goals for treatment, it is our responsibility to present all acceptable and up to date techniques that can help them achieve success. We hope to empower our patients with knowledge so they can make informed decisions. Too often, the latest ‘fad’ doesn’t live up to the hype, leading to frustration. We make recommendations from experience and quality, evidence based guidelines. Our recommendations are tailored to meet the goals of each patient and are constantly updated, adjusting for industry developments.

ACW: Why chose a board-certified plastic surgeon for noninvasive procedures such as Coolsculpting? Dr. Sood: Coolsculpting is a popular technique to eliminate stubborn body fat. When seeking consultation for non-invasive procedures, it is important that your practitioner has training in body contouring techniques. Certainly, fat can be removed from problem areas, but it is the art and technique of the removal that produces satisfying results and good aesthetic outcomes. At Sood Center, we offer a full line of non-invasive and invasive procedures and we discuss the pros and cons of each technique. We approach non-invasive strategies with the keen eye required for a refined result. In neck rejuvenation alone we offer several treatments from Coolsculpting to Kybella, to more advanced liposuction, and neck lifting techniques. Having an understanding of all the available options empowers patients, which is the key to success. ACW: What is the most rewarding part about your profession? Dr. Sood: There is nothing more rewarding at our office then seeing the smiling faces of patients who have transformed their lives for the better. On occasion, patients stop in to visit us and give us updates on their lives. Whether its marriage, the birth of a child, or graduations we enjoy bonding with them and hearing their stories. It gives me great pride to be able to say that I enjoy ‘going to work’ in the morning.
[\ Caroline Atwood, RT (N), RMA is the Medical Practice Manager at the Sood Center for Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery. She leads a team of dedicated staff and is responsible for the daily operations of the office. She has worked in the healthcare sector for over 20 years.
ACW: What do you think makes the Sood Center unique? Caroline: At Sood Center it is important to us to have a warm and friendly atmosphere starting from the time you call to schedule an appointment. We love getting to know each of our patients individually.
We Match Coolsculpting Prices!
ACW: What do you enjoy most about working with Dr. Sood? Caroline: Aside from being a stellar surgeon, Dr. Sood’s love for his patients and enthusiasm for his work makes him really enjoyable to work with. His patients and staff appreciate his kindness and compassion. He takes his time to explain everything to his patients to be sure all of their questions or concerns are addressed. ACW: What are the most common issues you see in the practice? Caroline: There are a variety of reasons people come into our office but the common factor is that our patients want to look and feel their best. They know that Dr. Sood can offer many options to give them the results they are hoping for, whether it is through invasive or non-invasive procedures. It’s amazing what simple office based procedures can do for a patient’s confidence and self-esteem. Patients commonly refer to their visits as “refreshing” and “rejuvenating.”
Dr. Sood completed a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. The experience he gained there has allowed him to become a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in his own right. His expertise is widely recognized, as he has performed extensive research and also has a number of published works.

Chemotherapy And Hair Loss
First you begin to not feel like yourself…pain, discomfort, weakness… next a doctor or hospital visit, then comes the lab work, the mammogram, or CAT scan. The doctor shares with you that they’ve found a mass… Okay, Doctor, now what? One of your choices to eradicate the benign cells, tumor or growth is chemotherapy… Chemotherapy is a category of cancer treatment that uses one or more anti-cancer drugs as part of a standardized chemotherapy regimen. Chemotherapy may be given with a curative intent, or it may aim to prolong life or to reduce symptoms. Chemotherapy is one of the major categories of medical oncology. Many of the side effects of chemotherapy can be traced to damage to normal cells that divide rapidly and are thus sensitive to

anti-mitotic drugs: cells in the bone marrow, digestive tract, and hair follicles. Let’s look at what chemotherapy does to the body. • immunosuppression and decreased production of blood cells • muscle pain, digestive issues • thinner and sensitized skin, fatigue • skin discoloration, constipation • nausea, nerve damage • weakness • hair loss* Cancer destroys and prevents the growth of healthy cells in a particular area or site. Chemotherapy interferes with the mitosis needed to induce proper hair growth. It kills and eradicates the cancerous cells and healthy growing hair cells, eventually ‘staving off the disease.’ Hair, skin and nail cells are the most rapidly growing cells in the body. It’s the
reason we see “5-o’clock shadow” within hours! Because of this, the chemotherapy, which is ‘cyto-toxic,’ destroys hair cells almost immediately. Once certain types of chemotherapy are started, within weeks, hair loss is total. It’s not the doctor’s job to save your hair and they may become insensitive to your needs. It’s their job to save your life. It’s my job to help you find low-cost, comfortable, suitable and medically deductible hair styles to fit your growing needs while in transition. 23 Home Health Care When Caregiving Gets Stressful, A Little Support Goes a Long Way Maryann Prudhomme,
Director of BAYADA Home Health Care
How many times have you heard someone say, “I’m so stressed out!” or have said it yourself? Stress is very personal; situations and events that are distressing for you might not bother someone else in the least. Nevertheless, stress – including workplace stress – can affect every aspect of your life and can even alter your physical well-being.
10 tips for reducing stress
1. Don’t pull the trigger on stress. The very first step in taking control of your stress is to recognize your personal triggers, helping you to avoid a stress response altogether. 2. Manage your work-life balance. Make time for interests you find enjoyable, relaxing, or fulfilling. 3. Take care of you. Develop healthy habits like regular exercise, good nutrition, adequate sleep, and minimal or no alcohol and tobacco use.
Health care workers in particular, due to the nature of their work, often suffer a special kind of stress called “compassion fatigue.” Over time, the ability to feel and care for others becomes eroded through overuse of their skills of compassion. Because they care so deeply about their patients or loved ones, health care professionals and caregivers who listen to stories of fear, pain, and suffering can find themselves empathetically experiencing similar emotions.
4. Manage your time. Few things are more stressful than running late. Plan ahead. Leave earlier.
Lisa Nguyen, client services manager with BAYADA’s Linwood office serving Atlantic and Cape May counties, understands how caregiving stress can affect people on the job and at home. She often provides emotional support for BAYADA nurses and home health aides as well as the families of clients. Nguyen gives her personal cell phone number to her staff so they know they can reach out to her any time, day or night. She touches base with them often, just so they know she is always there for them. “I’m always checking schedules to make sure the aides and nurses aren’t working too much or too little. If I see someone with a heavy workload, I’ll proactively reach out to them to see how they are doing and if there’s anything I can do to help.”
6. Resist perfectionism. If you feel you can do things better, then work on improvement, not perfection.
We’re there for our staff and family members, too
BAYADA client Mrs. Mary W. feels better taken care of when her daughter Lisa B. is stress free. Families will often reach out to Nguyen for advice, particularly if their loved one has dementia. “I always share advice and tips for dealing with the behaviors. It really reduces their stress level to know how to better handle them.” Nguyen’s office also offers a monthly Alzheimer’s support group where family members can come together and share stories and advice. Nguyen’s office is “dementia-certified,” which means that many of the home health aides have had advanced training in caring for clients with dementia. “Being in a home is different than providing care in a facility. Home caregivers really have to adapt to the individual environment and sometimes that can be stressful. Helping our families and staff manage caregiving stress is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job,” says Nguyen.

5. Get and stay organized. Do you often find yourself searching for something you misplaced, forgetting appointments, or accomplishing less than you intended? Organization will help you be more efficient and productive – and less stressed.
7. Adopt a positive attitude. Positive self-talk will improve your outlook and help you handle everyday stress in a more constructive way. 8. Talk it over with a trusted listener. Talking over a problem with someone who is both supportive and empathetic can be a great way to let off steam and relieve stress. 9. Ask for help. Talk to your supervisor and let him or her know what’s bothering you and work together to develop a plan to relieve some of your stressors. 10. Take a time-out. Sometimes all you need is a few minutes to disconnect from your environment to prevent your stress level from topping out. If possible, step away and do some deep breathing exercises or take a short walk.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH.
ARE YOU AT RISK FOR HEART DISEASE? Elder Law
Theater &E ntertainment A CORONARY CTA SCAN COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE. For many people there are no warning signs of heart attacks. Half of the people who suffer heart attacks have normal levels of cholesterol and/or normal blood pressure. For over 150,000 Americans per year, the very first sign of coronary artery disease is sudden death. In 2001, Atlantic Medical Imaging (AMI) was the first imaging center in South Jersey to introduce Coronary CT angiography, technologically the most advanced CT exam for detecting coronary artery disease available in the world. Since then, AMI has accumulated one of the world’s largest case experiences of more than 10,000 examinations, setting the standard of excellence in Coronary CTA.
Education
What is Coronary CTA? Coronary CTA is a test that images the coronary arteries. It is non-invasive, involves injection of intravenous contrast, and can be done at very low levels of radiation. AMI pioneered the prospective gating technique which allows us to perform Coronary CTA with radiation doses ranging from 70-90% less than that of a SPECT nuclear medicine stress test. Coronary CTA has an outstanding sensitivity for coronary artery disease. It detects disease in patients that have it in greater than 95%, but most importantly, it has a 100% negative predicted value. This means that the test will be negative 100% of the time when the patients have normal coronary arteries. Coronary CTA can detect eccentric soft plaque. 86% of heart attacks come from the rupture of eccentric plaque that is not causing a blockage in the coronary arteries. These plaques are invisible to stress tests until there is greater than a 70% stenosis and usually invisible to a coronary artery catheterization for the same level of disease. Coronary CTA can offer an early warning of coronary artery disease decades prior to it potentially causing a heart attack.

Know Your Risk
Many patients suffer under the burden of a significant family history for decades before knowing that their coronary arteries are normal. Relieving patients of this emotional burden is a tremendous benefit. More importantly, Coronary CTA is highly accurate for determining the degree of coronary artery disease and coronary artery stenosis. Statins and aspirin medications are available to modify a person’s risk of having coronary artery disease, as well as stroke. Imaging may play a key role in determining the level of coronary artery disease and ruling out whether a patient has or doesn’t have this disease. The level of disease can be determined by coronary artery imaging prior to a potential myocardial infarction and this level of disease is only detectable by Coronary CTA, when compared to stress test and coronary catheterization.
Business &Finance
Before having an imaging test, it is highly beneficial for patients to see their healthcare provider, have their risk factors examined, and determine whether they should proceed further with imaging. If it is determined that Coronary CTA will benefit you, call our office at (609) 677-XRAY (9729) to schedule an appointment.

A Commitment To Health From The Inside Out Laura Germanio was drawn to the field of Occupational Therapy because of its diversity. Therapists work with people of all ages in a variety of different medical settings. “When a person is affected by an illness or injury it has a ripple effect on all areas of their life. We look at how a person functions in their day to day life and what can be modified or improved so they can function at the highest level possible,” she adds. Although this often involves some creative thinking and problem solving to find exactly what will work best for each individual, Laura enjoys the challenge.

How To Prevent A Heart Attack Or Stroke Many of my patients think that they are coming to me to replace low levels of many hormones that decline with aging, learn how to get lean, replace nutritional deficiencies, sleep, restore a stable mood, feel sexual and have sexual function, experience optimal digestive function, restore muscle mass, thicken crepe-paper skin, enhance immune function, and regain their memory. Yes, this is all true. But the bottom line is that my ultimate goal is to prevent what seems to be so inevitable for my patient’s parents, namely…heart disease, stroke, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. If you want to witness global nutritional and hormonal decline, and profoundly inflamed patients, visit your local nursing home. For 35 years I have questioned whether lowering cholesterol numbers is the big ticket to preventing a heart attack, thinking that cholesterol numbers are not the whole story. You may be interested in knowing that insurance companies don’t even look at your LDL cholesterol numbers; rather, they look at the ratio of total cholesterol/HDL and triglycerides/HDL. Hundreds upon hundreds of studies have failed to prove that lowering LDL prevents heart attacks. A statistic you may not know is that the majority of patients who have a heart attack have normal cholesterol levels. Often, the first symptom of cardiovascular disease is a myocardial infarction (heart attack). If you ask different questions, you get different answers. If a patient asks me if they should take a statin medication to lower their cholesterol, I would say no. But if a patient asks me if they should take a statin medication to decrease arterial inflammation, decrease the risk of plaque rupture, increase the antioxidant bilirubin, stabilize fibrous clots, decrease periodontal inflammation, decrease the formation of blood clots, and decrease the stickiness of platelets --- I would order a DNA test called K1F6 to guide me whether to prescribe a statin, and which statin to prescribe. Treatment with a statin is warranted and decreases the risk of a myocardial infarction only if the patient is positive for the K1F6 gene. Approximately 60% of patients are positive for this gene and a statin medication is warranted, and the other 40% receive no benefit from a statin medication. Not so long ago, I suggested that my patients get a 64-slice cardiac CT scan to assess their level of calcified hard plaque. My level of calcification was zero --- and I erroneously thought I had immense protection. After much study and attending many medical conferences, I learned that the most important test to determine your level of cardiac health is not the calcified hard-plaque test, rather it is the measurement of your soft plaque done via an ultrasound of your carotid arteries, called the cIMT (cardiac intima media thickness) test. It is the soft plaque that breaks off and causes disease. The cIMT test tells us your arterial age. If we are truly employing a preventive treatment plan, your arterial age should be much lower than your chronological age. In today’s health care system, there is no financial incentive to rigorously investigate a patient’s genetic makeup and lifestyle. Performing catheterizations, stent procedures, and coronary bypass surgeries pays approximately 25% of the hospital’s costs. The best defense isn’t having medically heroic procedures (that do not prevent future disease); rather it’s protecting yourself with a personalized protection plan tailored to keep your heart healthy.

Patients tell me that they see their family doctor yearly for a “full workup.” Let me tell you what a 2017 full workup looks like. Determining your arterial age by doing a cIMT scan. Measurement of the major inflammatory markers, namely hsCRP, MACR, fibrinogen, Lp-PLA2, myeloperoxidase, Lp(a), ApoB, AA/EPA. Obtaining a few of the major DNA tests such as ApoE, interleukin 1A, interleukin 6, K1F6, 9P21, and Hp2. And, of course, let’s measure cholesterol. But do the cholesterol measurement that tells you if you have large particle (good) or small particle (bad) LDL and HDL. Explanation of what these tests contribute to an individualized treatment plan is detailed in the book entitled Beat the Heart Attack Gene by Drs. Bale and Doneen. Treatment is multifaceted and individually tailored to each patient’s DNA and test results. Some treatment modalities include having pristine blood pressure. My patients are advised to take their blood pressure in the morning with an Omron wrist blood pressure cuff. An antihypertensive medication is often vitally important. The correct statin is prescribed if warranted by DNA results --- but with the caveat from Harvard lectures not to lower cholesterol too much. I take low-dose Crestor on Tuesday and Thursday only. You need cholesterol for optimal brain function and to prevent dementia. Hormonal replacement is necessary. After menopause, arteries get stiffer, HDL gets lower, and triglycerides get higher. Bioidentical estrogen replacement keeps your heart and blood vessels healthy. A baby aspirin, 81 mg, not full-dose aspirin, is taken with dinner. Niacin is prescribed for those with high Lp(a). Interval training for 11 minutes, or 22 minutes of brisk walking is prescribed, and becoming lean again is mandatory. Medication to lower a rapid pulse is occasionally prescribed. Getting the patient to have optimal sleep is imperative. Pristine dental hygiene twice a day is necessary --- including flossing (no pink in the sink), tongue scraping, antibacterial mouthwash, and brushing. Many other forms of treatment may be prescribed, including therapy to learn to reframe the many stressors of life. Depression and anxiety increase inflammation and increase your risk for a myocardial infarction. As you can see, preventing a heart attack or stroke involves the patient and the doctor working together. Then you can truly have a healthy new year..

Cough and Cold Season Is Here—
Are You Ready? Believe it or not, cough and cold season is upon us. Our nights are becoming very cold and children have been back in school for about four months now. This is the season everyone dreads. It seems we see people with the sniffles everywhere—at work, at the mall and even at home. Now is the time to take some steps that will reduce your risk of catching a cold and stock up on things that will help with the symptoms when the inevitable happens. You can reduce your risk of catching a cold or flu. Here are some helpful hints: WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY—This will help stop the spread of germs. Everything you touch potentially has cold germs on it—doorknobs, handrails, pens, PIN pads, etc. Also, keep hand sanitizer easily accessible—keep it in your car and your desk at work. REDUCE STRESS—Whenever a big day is coming up, or there’s a deadline you have been rushing to meet, you are more likely to become sick. Relax; your health is more important. Also, try to get at least eight hours of sleep per night. EAT WELL—Certain foods combat colds. Try to include as much of the following as possible in your diet: broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, onions, citrus fruits, and whole grains. Some evidence also exists supporting using vitamin C and Echinacea to boost your immune system. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER—Drinking plenty of water helps flush germs out of your body. Water also helps keep your mucous membranes moist, allowing them to trap the virus and dispose of it. BREATHE FRESH AIR—Try to breathe as much fresh air as possible. Recycled, contaminated air can make you sick! Get outside as much as possible. Cold air will not give you a cold! For the most part, everyone catches some degree of a cold at least once a year. Once you feel the symptoms coming on, then what? For starters, continue the above tips. Also, cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough (no one else wants your germs). And most importantly—CONTINUE TO WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY. There are many cough and cold medications on the market that can help with your cold or cough symptoms. Decongestants in a pill form or a nasal spray can help with a stuffy nose. Antihistamines can help with itchy, watery eyes. Cough
suppressants help control a nagging cough. Cough drops or throat lozenges help with a sore throat. Tylenol or Motrin can help any body aches or fever. Before taking any medications, please consult with your pharmacist or doctor to be sure the medication you are buying doesn’t aggravate any existing medical conditions or interact with any current medication you are taking. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Many over-the-counter cough and cold medications can cause adverse effects. Don’t be afraid to ask us, that is what we are here for. Once you have determined which medications are safe, keep some at home so that you are prepared when that cold comes along. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:
T
The Mind-Body Stress Disorder of Trauma
he symptoms are traumatic and life-shaking; they are intrusive and frightening. Sleep is elusive because it leads to dreams that are more like nightmares. Flashbacks are irrepressible. A feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, loss of interest, guilt, shame, self-medication and fear of being among people or going places are all part of the myriad of emotional, physical and cognitive symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is pernicious, insidious, and prevalent. Seventy percent (70%) of adults
have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives; about 224 million people. About 20% of these people will develop some degree of PTSD, which is appreciably 45 million people. One out of nine women will develop PTSD, which means women are twice as likely as men to develop PTSD.
PTSD was considered “battle fatigue” or “shell shocked,” particularly for combat veterans. However, anyone at any
age can experience trauma and subsequent PTSD. Sexual and physical assaults, any life-threatening or bodily harmful event, bullying, including cyber bullying, as well as any perceived failure can induce this persistent reaction. When the trauma is severe enough to the psyche, the lack of adequate defense to prevent that extent of damage is now being produced as a “defense deluxe.” This is created to compensate and as an attempt to “protect” from further and future traumas. Hence, “Guard Duty status”—or as our Nobel Laureate, Bob Dylan, mused—“All Along the Watchtower.” This may come in the form of repetitive nightmares, daytime flashbacks of the event(s), increased startle reactions, many physical symptoms from autonomic dysregulation: i.e., “fight/flight” states on low, repetitive simmer, instead of how its designed to be utilized—in acute, brief bursts. There are principally three ways to be traumatized. First, you are the victim of a traumatic event; second, you are the perpetrator of a traumatic event; and third, and most common, you are the witness to someone else’s traumatic event that vicariously traumatizes you—by visual, audio or both sensory incomings.
Those who suffer from PTSD may wonder why they have to relive what’s over, especially because it was terrible enough when it happened in the first place. This act
of reliving the pain over and over is a critical aspect of PTSD. The unconscious mind wants the person to be safe and avoid any subsequent trauma, to that end, it fuels the vigilance by serving up frightening reminders to keep the mind sensitive to cues and providing expensive, false security at best. While there is much to learn about PTSD, there is also a greater understanding about its magnitude of disruption. The fact that PTSD has been moved from the section on anxiety disorders in the DSM-IV to the “trauma and stressor” disorder group in the DSM-V is evidentiary of the significance of this understanding. The autonomic physical symptoms of PTSD, such as increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, any and all GI issues, cold sweats, muscle and head aches, dizziness, vision changes, etc., can readily be coupled with psychiatric sequelae. These include such things as phobias (disproportional fears to anything or anyone, situations, etc.), major depressive disorder, suicide, substance abuse, panic (extreme fear without an identified, overt source), hypervigilance sometimes leading to paranoia of delusional intensity—hence, the “D” or Disorder comes alive and lingers on to torment, with an underlying desire to save.
system is configured to deal with trauma in the first place. An example of what this means is that the genetic environment of an individual may play a key role in how one responds to trauma as a cause-and-effect interaction, and not just the trauma by itself that causes an individual to have certain responses. In addition, it has been cited that older studies lack key elements as determinants to PTSD response. These include such factors as age when the trauma was experienced, the extent and the period of time associated with the trauma, and the correlation between the traumas experienced early in one’s life to its effect on adulthood.
TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
There are many studies and findings relative to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that are well beyond the scope of this article. Scientific insight continues to evolve and change what we know and what we do as a result of these new discoveries and awareness. But what we do know is that the human condition is not without its possibilities and probabilities of exposure to trauma. There is no proven way to prevent its happening, especially for those who have high-risk jobs such as protecting the public, or live in high crime areas, or bear witness to or are in terrible accidents. Fortification against trauma may include such things as stress management and special training for those in high-risk jobs, community safe groups, or spiritual resources. Psychotherapy is “universally recommended” for PTSD. It is recommended to be “preferred over medication” as the first intervention. The American Psychiatric Association (APA), Institute of Medicine (IOM), International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, among other recognized agencies in the health and medical research communities, are in agreement that specific “trauma-focused psychotherapy” is the best evidenced-based approach to PTSD. The primary reason for choosing pharmacotherapy is the presence of comorbid disorders such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. The most effective medications for PTSD are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as paroxetine and sertraline. Prazosin, which is used for sleep-related disorders, is the only medication with a grade of “recommended” for treating posttraumatic stress nightmares in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s guidelines (Psychiatric Annals, Vol. 46, number 9, September 2016). However, according to some recent studies in Psychiatric Annals, there is evidence that the drug doxazosin has greater advantages than prazosin because it has a longer half-life and only requires daily dosing as opposed to multiple dosing of prazosin. Doxazosin is better absorbed and will not wear off during sleep, leading to nightmares. Because of the advantages of Doxazosin, it may be better tolerated and more efficacious for patients with PTSD.
Experienced and well trained mental health professionals can help.

The angst of PTSD symptoms leads to even further mental and physical exhaustion. The unconscious mind is a very powerful place, with
some creating a “Disorder” inadvertently in order to be and stay safe; quite the paradox.
There are neurobiological reasons and alterations in PTSD as well. It has been demonstrated in earlier studies that certain genes, through “epigenetic mechanisms” (Psychiatric Annals, Vol. 46, number 9, September 2016) associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis areas of the brain, seem to play some part in regulating the risk for PTSD after exposure to trauma. Newer studies are in place to help determine the differences in PTSD responses caused by the effect of the trauma on the nervous system as compared to how the neurobiology of the

My Mind is Playing Tricks on Me Today, I forgot where I parked my car and don’t recall what I needed at the grocery store. Should I be worried? Problems with memory are a growing concern for many, as statistics on the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease become more and more frightening. According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2013 Facts and Figures, an estimated 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. This number prompts many of us to ask questions such as: Is forgetting simple things a sign of something more serious? Should I be worried about developing Alzheimer’s disease? Is stress playing tricks on my memory? As we age, it is important to bring any changes that are impacting your daily routine and life to your physician. It is common to forget someone’s name, or forget to pick up milk at the store. It is not common to forget the person or an entire experience, or have no recollection of how you got to the store. Ruling out an underlying physical condition can give you peace of mind. A simple medical evaluation is a pro-active approach and early intervention and always recommended. However, it is important to note that worrying about internal and external stressors in your life can also present with cognitive symptoms, such as memory problems, which can be controlled. Our minds can play tricks on us, especially if you are someone who has a full plate, and maybe does too much. I hear the same story every day with friends and family. “I am so stressed,” is a common statement, as many juggle a household,
children, work deadlines, and for many, caring for an aging parent. There is so much on your plate that things are forgotten, details are missed and tasks are not getting done. You begin to worry. How can you forget simple things? It becomes frustrating and you start thinking, what is wrong with me. Trying to manage many balls in the air is a balancing act. Stress creeps in and presents itself in different ways emotionally, physically and cognitively. Some common symptoms of stress are forgetting things, being easily distracted, poor sleep patterns, emotional ups and downs, poor appetite, depression and the list goes on. It is important to recognize your stress triggers and how stress affects you personally. Recognition of triggers is the first step for preventing stress and alleviating any symptoms. So how do you do this? First, make the time to assess what you have going on in your life that could be sources of stress. What about the activity or situation is stressful? What can you change in this situation to make it less stressful? Involve someone else who can give you insight and a different perspective. Finding the underlying cause is a good first step. Second, manage stress before it manages you. There are many support resources, but you need to first ask for help and make a plan. Call a friend for support. Plan a weekly date night. Take a vacation. Exercise and make time for hobbies. Be flexible and find humor in a stressful situation. Learn to laugh. Find a local assisted living and schedule

Singing the Winter Blues? You Can Change Your Tune..
I have nothing against the color blue. In fact, I rather like it. There’s nothing like the soft blue of a morning sky over the ocean and bay; or a striking blue outfit to wear. I even enjoy blues music. But the winter blues are another story.

Now the Practice of Yoga Begins…Are You Ready? Written by Laurie Greene, PhD, ERYT, Owner Atha Yoganushasanam (yoga sutras 1.1) “Now the practice of yoga begins”
The first sentence of the bible of classical yoga is this. Atha, which often opens important Sanskrit texts, means “now” and has the connotation of auspicious beginnings…like saying “behold!”: it acts at once as an imperative— “wake up,” we are beginning—and as a “blessing” for those who are ready to begin. It insinuates that we are finally ready to get real, and “to discover the essence of our existence in the core of our own heart and at the center of our being” (Freeman). It signals our ability to be in the present moment (“now!”). Anushasanam refers to a systematic, scientific teaching; a teaching which is only offered to a qualified student—one who is ready to fully commit. Yoga is a very varied practice. There are many different styles, diverse practices, and distinct lineages, but there is also an underlying web of similarity that joins these different approaches. An Indian folktale tells of a man who is digging a well. He begins by digging down five feet and when there is no water, he is discouraged by his hard work, and he climbs out of the hole, moves a few yards away and begins digging again, only to be met by disappointment again and again. This goes on and on, and he never finds water, but labors endlessly. Most traditions of yoga inspire us to engage in deep self-exploration. They ask us to stick with it, work hard, and dig deeper and deeper. What we tend to do in our lives is leave a practice (any practice) just as it becomes challenging. We jump from regimen to regimen, diet to diet, relationship to relationship, career to career. In yoga we are asked to stick to it, so that through the body and breath we can investigate deep and subtle feelings, responses, and reflexes in relation to the conditioned mind. We do this by slowing everything down and observing it closely with fresh eyes. We try to look past the rapid evaluations of our conditioned minds. Atha is therefore about being present, here, in the moment.
“Every little gesture of the hand, every Mudra has a deep meaning – the entire philosophy of life is contained in these gestures. They convey a whole history of God’s self-manifestation in the universe.” – Paramahamsa Omkarananda Saraswati Mudras play a very important role in Taoist alchemy, Buddhist meditation, yoga, and Indian classical dance and theater. The word mudra stems from the Sanskrit root mud, which means “bliss.” This hints at the power of these beautiful gestures to evoke deep feeling in the observer and joy in the practitioner. The word mudra also denotes “seal” in yoga and is employed to explain the process of sealing and strengthening the body’s vital energies. In classical Indian dance, mudras are used to express the vast array of human emotion and experience; to communicate deep feelings and tell intricate stories. In the yoga tradition mudras are used for spiritual concentration, healing, removing obstacles, and other subtle energetic practices. Please come and join us at Yoga Nine for a deeper exploration of the “now.” We will always offer challenging, guided practice to every student as we dig deeper into experience. Come dig deeper…the time is now!
Yoga 101: 5 Week Course for new beginners January 15 - February 19 Sundays: 11:30 includes instructional course, free rubber mat and 5 weeks access to all classes at both locations
The diverse styles of yoga accomplish this focus and concentration in different ways. Some study texts and philosophy (jnana), some engage in chanting and other forms of devotion to a higher cause (bhakti), some engage in good works (karma), and still others look to the movement of energies in the body to create deep experience (hatha). The body in hatha yoga is seen as an arena for metaphysical experience. It is manipulated through body postures, bandhas (locks), and mudras (body & hand gestures), which enhance the channeling of energy and therefore experience. These practices are ancient and are found in many Eastern artistic traditions. Indian classical theater and dance make use of postures and mudras to feel and express emotion and create transformation in the performers and the audience. Mudras in particular help to focus the gross body energy through delicate and precise movements of the hands. We are familiar with “anjali,” the mudra of prayer, which focuses our bodies on our vital energy and the essential energy of others, but there are many mudras with many intentions.

Psoriasis Psoriasis is a noncontagious skin condition that produces plaques of thickened, scaling skin. The dry flakes of skin scales result from the excessively rapid proliferation of skin cells. The proliferation of skin cells is triggered by inflammatory chemicals produced by specialized white blood cells called lymphocytes.
Erythrodermic psoriasis presents as generalized erythema, pain, and itching. It typically encompasses nearly the entire body surface area. It may be accompanied by fever, chills, hypothermia and dehydration secondary to the large body surface area involvement.
There are different types of psoriasis. Some affect only skin while others affect other vital organs of the body like eyes, oral cavity, nails and joints.
Scalp psoriasis affects approximately 50% of patients. It presents as erythematous raised plaques with silvery white scales on the scalp.
Psoriasis vulgaris is the most common type of psoriasis and involves the scalp, extensor surfaces, genitals, umbilicus, trunk and ears. Plaque psoriasis is characterized by raised, inflamed lesions covered with a silvery white scale. Guttate psoriasis presents as small salmon-pink papules, 1-10 mm in diameter, predominately on the trunk. It frequently appears suddenly, 2-3 weeks after an upper respiratory infection (URI) with group A beta-hemolytic streptococci. This form of psoriasis might cause heart complications if not promptly identified and treated. Pustular psoriasis presents as pustules appearing on the palms and soles or diffusely over the body.
Inverse psoriasis occurs on the flexural surfaces, armpit, groin, under the breast, and in the skin folds. It is characterized by smooth, inflamed lesions without scaling due to the moist nature of the area where this type of psoriasis is located. Oral psoriasis may present with whitish lesions on the oral mucosa. Geographic tongue is considered by many to be an oral form of psoriasis. Eruptive psoriasis involves the upper trunk and upper extremities. Most often, it is seen in younger patients.
BEAUTIFUL SKIN AT ANY AGE
Complications of psoriasis may include the following: • Secondary infections • Possible increased risk of lymphoma • Possible increased risk of cardiovascular and ischemic heart disease • Psoriatic arthritis • Mitral valve prolapse
Medical Dermatology: Comprehensive Skin (Pediatric & Adult) Cancer Screenings Available • Abnormal Moles Call Today! • Pre-cancer growths • Skin Cancer • Pimples • Scars • Painful viral & fungal infections • Itchy flaky scalp/face • Eczema • Cracked lips & dry skin • Itching, sunburns & blisters • Diaper rash & allergic reactions • Rosacea • Skin tags • Benign growths ...and many others.
Even after plaques have cleared, there may be a longstanding or permanent discoloration. Arthritis, if not controlled, may be mutilating and crippling. It is suggested that psoriatic patients have a higher incidence of cancer, especially lymphoma, but how much of this increased risk can be ascribed to the psoriasis and how much to the medications used for psoriasis is less certain. Psoriatic patients have a higher incidence of depression and anxiety.

Nail psoriasis may cause pits on the nails, which often become thickened and yellowish in color. Nails may separate from the nail bed. Psoriatic nails may be indistinguishable from fungal nails so your dermatologist can perform certain tests to determine the diagnosis.
Sometimes your dermatologist might need to do a biopsy to confirm psoriasis. Treatment regimens depend on the severity of the condition. It could be topical, oral, injection or a combination of a few. However, in spite of a range of options, effective treatment of psoriasis can be challenging. The disease is unpredictable, going through cycles of improvement and worsening, seemingly at random. Effects of psoriasis treatments also can be unpredictable; what works well for one person might be ineffective for someone else. Your skin also can become resistant to various treatments over time, and the most potent psoriasis treatments can have serious side effects. Talk to your dermatologist about your psoriasis and treatments available.

Rehabilitation Center Pneumonia Season Stay safe from respiratory infection this winter. During the winter months, the risk of developing pneumonia increases — particularly among older adults. At this time of year, it’s wise to take measures to prevent this dangerous and potentially fatal illness. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. The sacs in the lungs, which take in air, become inflamed and fill up with fluid. This makes it hard to breathe and causes a cough that is typically accompanied by mucus. If untreated, the infection can lead to breathing problems and, in some cases, even spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms of pneumonia include: Cough. A buildup of fluid in the lungs creates a nearly constant urge to cough. Left untreated, the cough will become increasingly severe and could lead to

rapid and can lead to hyperventilation. This, in turn, often causes chest pain. If you or someone in your care is experiencing these symptoms, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible. You may require x-rays or be referred to a specialist who can provide the proper treatment to ensure that the illness does not progress to a more serious level. Equally important, there are steps you can take to help prevent pneumonia. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommends that the elderly, and others who are at risk for pneumonia, get vaccinated. The one-time vaccine can prevent or reduce the severity of pneumonia.
Vitality for Living
Since colds, the flu, and other respiratory infections can sometimes lead to pneumonia, it is wise to practice good hygiene habits — especially during the winter months. Copiers Plus Is Keeping It In The Family When Bob and Debra Matthews started their business, Copiers Plus, they knew that customer service would be a priority. In fact, their company slogan: “Service is our Specialty,” also became words to live by for their staff. Serving as a traditional and specialty digital office equipment company, they represent over 30 years in the field selling and servicing equipment. Bob adds, “We continue to grow as a result of our loyal customers who refer our company to others. Our customers and our employees are the most important people in our business. We are dependent on them.” CW: Tell us about the main services you provide. Bob: We have a walk-in retail business for copying, blueprint copying, fax and e-mail service along with document scanning. We also offer commercial printing for letterheads, business cards, forms, invitations and graphic design. Finally, we offer large format color printing for banners, posters, indoor and outdoor signs, vehicle graphics and vinyl wraps. CW: What is the single most important aspect of your business that sets it apart from others like it? Bob: We provide very fast turnaround for most projects by our courteous and knowledgeable staff. We take a “can do” attitude to every single request. It really comes down to good old fashion customer service.
CW: How did you become involved in printing services? Bob: About 15 years ago we relocated into a larger facility on Fire Rd. in Egg Harbor Township. Being as we were located on a major highway and surrounded by commercial and retail businesses, we decided to create a new division focused on retail and commercial printing. Already in the digital copier equipment business, it seemed like a natural diversification. I felt that we would be able to leverage our expertise in the equipment business to be successful in the commercial printing business. CW: How does it feel to have your children follow in your footsteps? Was it a natural progression for them? Bob: It’s extremely rewarding. I think many parents would love to have their children follow in their footsteps especially if they own a business. It presents excellent opportunities and challenges for everyone involved. I feel very fortunate to have both of our sons working in the business. CW: Tell us about the vehicle wrapping services you offer. Bob: We have provided vehicle wrapping and lettering for over four years with over 100 projects completed. They are mostly advertising graphics along with partial wraps and a few full color changes. This is an extremely labor intensive and technical procedure. We provide a complete solution from concept and design, through production and installation. We also provide vinyl lettering and magnetic signs. If you are in need of any office equipment or commercial printing for your business, call Copiers Plus, 609-645-7587 or visit their website at www.copiersplus.com and like them on Facebook.
Incredible Custom Work & Vehicle Wraps Vehicle wraps are a very memorable way to spread your business’s message. Vehicle wraps for sales, service and delivery vehicles are a powerful branding and marketing tool. Brightly colored, attractive vehicle wraps make your company vehicles stand out from all the other cars on the road. Passing drivers won’t pay much attention to a plain white van on the road, but they will notice a well-designed vehicle wrap. Colorful vehicle wraps are so engaging that peoples’ eyes naturally gravitate towards them. The people who will see your vehicle wrap the most are the people in your area. Local marketing produces outstanding results because people like to deal with nearby businesses.

Is Your Hair Ready For The New Year?
T
he New Year is here and winter has arrived. Now is a great time Kathy “Cubby" Fisher for “new Owner of Shore Style Salon beginnings” We can also apply this ‘new beginnings’ thought process when it comes to our hair.
Many don’t realize how badly the dry air and cold temperatures can damage your hair. Couple that with the dry heat inside, and hair becomes severely dry, brittle and lifeless (and how about that STATIC???). Once hair reaches this dry and brittle state, it loses its elasticity and it simply breaks off. The good news is, we don’t have to rely on the timely, costly, and complicated methods of ‘yesteryear’ to maintain healthy hair. There are many reasons why our hair becomes extremely dry and dull, but some simple changes can bring our hair back to the healthy, shiny way it was meant to be!
Just a few tips:
Y
Do not over-shampoo.
Though most professional cleansing products are extremely gentle with no harsh ingredients, over-shampooing will eventually strip all natural oils from the scalp. Many don’t realize that in doing this, they are removing much-needed natural and healthy oils that dry, porous and especially chemically treated hair needs. If you feel ‘dirty’ when you don’t shampoo daily, try skipping at least one or two days a week. Instead of shampooing your hair, give it a long rinse and apply a quality conditioner to the ends. You’ll feel fresher, and your hair will look healthier.
Y
Always give your hair a cold water rinse.
It helps seal the hair cuticle and adds more shine to hair. Even if your scalp is extremely oily, your hair may still require a protein-based
professional-grade conditioner. A healthy scalp means healthy hair, so again, if your scalp is dry, flaky, and cared for improperly, it will be seen in your hair. When you do shampoo, gently exfoliate the scalp area to remove any excess oil and/or flakes. Doing this will unclog hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth. There’s no need to focus shampoo too much on the hair shaft and ends when you shampoo, unless you have a lot of product built up. Instead, just use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while to remove product build-up.
Y
out of our winter ‘hibernation,’ why not also think about making some changes with your hair color and style? Sometimes even the smallest of changes can feel like BIG changes, and they can be lots of fun. Start with our 100% Organic Color and a cut designed just for you. Think about sealing your color in and improving the health of your hair with a Keratin treatment, which will seal protein directly onto the hair. Even the most difficult hair is transformed into shiny, healthy hair that is easy to manage in half the time. Talk with your stylist to find out Use products recommended which custom cut, color, and treatment for your specific needs by best suits your needs. Communication is the key to any great look. your stylist.
I can’t stress this enough! Many spend a good amount of time and money at the hair salon, then go home and buy whatever hair care products they find on sale, many of which boast high-quality results. Your stylist knows you and your hair and what will keep your investment looking and feeling its best. Save the discount shampoo for the kiddos!
Y
We LOVE What We Do!
Choosing the Perfect Hair Appliances The right tools will actually preserve the health of your hair, and extend hair color as well. Is your hairdryer 10+ years old? If so, it is most likely not only drying your hair out, it’s literally BURNING your hair as well. The condition, age and type of hair tools you use are very important. Today’s hair appliances are made to dry hair in less time while locking in moisture and shine. Look for words like ‘Ionic’ and ‘Tourmaline’ when making these purchases. A hairdryer with different temperatures and a ‘COOL SHOT’ is a good way to go. Always finish drying hair with a cool shot to lock in shine. If you use a flatiron or curling irons, always look for the same key words as mentioned above. They should also have a choice of heat settings. Spray hair with a heat protector to assist in better end results. Start on the lower settings, and if you need to go higher (hotter), do so in small increments. When you’ve hit the perfect temperature, you’ll know it for future use. Don’t be alarmed if you see some steam rise as you use these appliances. That’s simply the product that’s steaming. Ask your stylist to direct you in making a purchase. If we don’t have what you’re looking for in stock, we can order it for you.
Always take extra care with highlighted, fine and damaged hair.
I often compare treating your hair to treating your finest washables. You wouldn’t wash your fine washables in hot water, put them in the dryer on the highest heat setting, and afterwards iron them using the hottest setting – the garment would be destroyed. Yet, that’s what many do to their hair, without realizing it. They then wonder WHY their hair is looking ‘rough,’ dry, and over-processed. Once you get on track with all of these things, you will see an ABSOLUTE positive difference in the health of your hair – sometimes immediately. Please always remember that whatever happens to your body internally will affect you externally. This means everything – including your hair. Illness, stress, medication, vitamins (or lack thereof ), poor diet, change in diet, or any type of internal change in your body will affect your hair. It’s best to take care of ourselves inside in order to help how we look outside. As we all begin the transition

Let Cutting Board Creations Into Your Kitchen and Watch Your Life Get A Whole Lot Easier These days getting a healthy dinner on the table night after night can be a serious challenge. Between soccer practice, dance classes and the average person’s typical workday, this is a problem all too familiar for most people. Enter personal chef Stephanie Hopkins with an easy solution. As a personal chef, Stephanie will take care of all of your menu planning, grocery shopping, cooking, packaging and clean up of meals designed specifically for each client. In a typical day, 20 meals are prepared, packaged and labeled (in the client’s home) so that the client can have a delicious and healthy home-cooked meal within minutes of walking through their front door! Since the menu is shared with and approved by the client ahead of time, every meal is an enjoyable one. She has over 7,000 recipes that she works with, however many of her client’s request repeats of their favorites.
ACW: How did you become involved in this field?
Stephanie: In my previous life as a Project Manager and consultant, I did
quite a bit of travelling and used to cook when I got home as a way to relax. Nutrition and healthy eating have always been very interesting to me. When the company I was working for wanted me to move to Texas, I made the decision to start my own business. I saw an ad in Cooking Light Magazine that talked about the United States Personal Chef Association. As fate would have it, there happened to be a school right in Cherry Hill. The rest is history.
ACW: What is the most rewarding part about your profession?
Stephanie: Over the last 13 years I have met so many fantastic people. Many
are still clients and have since become friends. I’ve had the opportunity to gain experience in a number of different diets, health issues and cuisines as a result of working to make sure each client gets exactly what they are looking for.
ACW: What is the most challenging part?
Stephanie: Putting together the menus is the most time consuming part of
my day. Since my goal has always been to not repeat dishes for clients for at
least 6 months, I spend a lot of time researching different recipes and making sure that all the ingredients in those recipes meet the needs of each client.
ACW: What is the greatest obstacle to eating healthy?
Stephanie: Time. Most people don’t have the time it takes to shop for, chop
and cook the fresh meats and vegetables that are essential to eating a balanced diet. While most have the best intentions of doing so, they buy groceries only to throw them away when they haven’t had the time to actually do the cooking. Most of the current meal delivery services still require you to “process” the ingredients, so folks aren’t really gaining anything there either. That’s why a service from a Personal Chef is far more cost effective than most people think. It’s not a Private Chef like most associate with the rich and famous. A Personal Chef comes in, prepares a number of meals, and doesn’t come back again until you are ready.
ACW: Are there ways that you help your clients learn to love cooking?
Stephanie: I’m always happy to talk to my clients about nutrition, cooking
and different methods that are available to them. Although it’s a somewhat foreign concept to me, some people just don’t like to do it. I think the way that I help clients out the most is by making them feel good about what they are serving their family for dinner and knowing that the time they had to invest to do so was minimal.
Stephanie is a Certified Personal Chef, a member of the United States Personal Chef Association, a certified Food Safety Manager and former President of the South Jersey Chapter of Personal Chefs. It is her passion for cooking and interest in nutrition that drives her to be so successful. She has lived in NJ with her husband for over 18 years. An avid runner, she recently completed her 12th half marathon after starting to run in 2011. They say that if a person truly loves their job, they never “work” a day in their life. Stephanie Hopkins is living proof of that.

Exercise Myths
“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.”
T
ruth be known, when it comes to our health, it is important to study the facts to understand how behaviors or change of behaviors may benefit us and those we love. The healthcare industry is constantly making new breakthroughs and reporting important facts on studies. And too, today our neighbors, moms, or friends may weigh in with what they think, heard, or read online. When we are bombarded with so many mixed messages, it is hard to know what to believe these days. What we do know is that maintaining an active lifestyle is one of the most important actions we can take to be the healthiest us. Not only does exercising help maintain an ideal weight, it decreases our risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s dementia, stroke and some cancers—chronic illnesses and leading killers of Americans. Let’s take a few moments to dispel some exercise myths.
Although most myths are just harmless half-truths, some can actually be harmful.
Dr. Nina’s What You Need To Know About Exercise Myths Myth 1: No Pain, No Gain
Doctors, physical therapists, researchers, and fitness experts alike recommend challenging your body—not abusing it. In no way is pain prescribed. In fact, pain during activity can signal injury to a muscle, ligament, tendon, or bone. So if your body is hurting, pay attention. An injury can force us to restrict activity for several days and even weeks, require medical intervention and possibly even surgery. The good news is that the vast majority of injuries from being active and moving our body with exercise are, in fact, preventable. If you have questions, consult with your healthcare provider, a sports training specialist, or a physical therapist.
Myth 2: Muscle Soreness Occurs Because Of Lactic Acid Buildup
Generally, sore muscles after new or strenuous exercise manifests a day or two later, and hence the name delayed onset muscle soreness [DOMS]. While the science is not completely understood, soreness is believed to result from microscopic muscle tears that cause inflammation and soreness—not the buildup of lactic acid. Lactic acid does get generated but the body quickly “washes” or “clears” it away. The good news is that DOMS means your muscle is getting stronger, bigger, and more conditioned.
our crunches. But they do not burn fat immediately around them. It is also true that doing crunches can develop strong and large abdominal muscles. But unless the fat above those muscles disappears, we will not be able to appreciate that “sixpack.” So how do we get that washboard stomach? By burning fat throughout your body via jogging, swimming, biking and other cardiovascular exercises.
Myth 5: You Sweat Toxins Out Of Your Body
Toxins are eliminated by your liver, kidneys and gut; not by sweating. Although some people jokingly state that “sweat is your fat crying,” perspiration is your body’s way to regulate its temperature, somewhat like an air conditioner. It is mostly comprised of water (99%) and a small amount of salt, proteins, carbohydrates and urea. “Trace,” or minuscule, amounts of toxins may be detected in sweat, but they get rid of less than 1% of the body’s total toxin content. Additionally, heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated and, as a result, force your kidneys to conserve water and hang onto toxins. Talk about spinning your wheels! So the next time you know you will be breaking out a sweat, take a bottle of water with you. Today we live in a world where we have greater access to information. But we must know that it is not always accurate. Let the truth be known. It’s difficult to navigate through all the information that is thrown at us. As we strive to make our workouts as effective and efficient as possible, we need to debunk the myths that can lead us astray or be “persistent, persuasive,” or even harmful. We need to separate fact from fiction. By honing in on the “truth,” it allows us to “take care of our bodies. It’s the only one we have to live in.”
Myth 3: Exercise Is Worthless If I Can’t Do It Regularly For Hours
Nina Radcliff, M.D., is a practicing physician; a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists where she serves on committees for young physicians and communications. Often called upon by media to speak to medical health topics impacting our lives today, Dr. Nina is passionate about sharing truths for healthy, balanced living as well as wide preventative measures.
Many feel that it’s an all-or-nothing approach when it comes to physical activity—that you must spend hours at the gym in order to reap the benefits of exercise. The truth of the matter is that almost any form of movement is good movement. That being said, the more you do, the greater the benefits. So how much do you need? The answer depends on your fitness goals, personal preferences, schedule, facilities at your disposal, and health condition. The US Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. That can include walking, running, dancing, swimming, yoga and gardening. If you have not exercised for a long time, have chronic health problems (such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis), or any concerns, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. And remember that five minutes here and another five minutes there add up.
Myth 4: Spot Training Will Give Me That Six-Pack
Crunch, crunch, crunch…but don’t be surprised if we do not see “rock-hard abs.” Although it seems logical, spot training or exercising one part of our body with the hopes it will look amazing, may leave us heavily disappointed. Let’s take, for example, sit-ups. It is true that our abdominal muscles burn fat when we do

Don’t Wait for A Crisis To Call the Alzheimer’s Association© Free, 24/7 Helpline Caring for someone who is living with Alzheimer’s disease is a unique experience because the needs of someone who has dementia are so different. Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, is a degenerative brain disease that gradually produces debilitating memory loss. It can cause confusion, changes in behavior and personality, as well as alter the way someone sees or perceives physical spaces, among other symptoms. Over time, Alzheimer’s symptoms keep the person living with dementia from being able to perform even basic daily routines. Then, because there is no treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s, it continues to progress, leaving people with the disease unable to care for themselves altogether and dependent on others to take care of their most basic needs.
“This is why we offer a free Helpline,” said Coppinger. “Anyone from a caregiver to the person who has just been diagnosed and has questions about Alzheimer’s or another dementia can call us.” In 2015, the Delaware Valley Chapter handled nearly 3,000 Helpline calls from South Jersey. Throughout the Garden State, 449,000 caregivers in New Jersey provided 511 million total hours of unpaid care valued at more than $6 billion. Helpline coordinator, Jennifer Schwartz explains Helpline, which is available 24/7 every day of year in more than 200 languages and dialects at 800.272.3900, is not a crisis hotline, but rather, a source of information or just a friendly ear. “We recognize many people believe they can only call us if they have an emergency or are in a crisis situation at that moment, but that is not the case,” she said. “Our Helpline staff is highly trained and can provide information about our education programs, support groups, adult day care, and many other resources. We are here to help you even if all you want to do is talk.”
Oftentimes, the confusion and memory loss—particularly the short term memory issues Alzheimer’s causes—can result in incidents that produce significant emotional or physical stress in a caregiver. They might notice, for example, multiple, untouched cups of coffee in several places throughout the home, only to discover their loved one has been repeatedly brewing cup after cup of coffee because she kept forgetting about every cup she had just brewed. Or, maybe a caregiver cannot drive her dad to his doctor appointment because he has forgotten who she is, has become combative and refuses to get in the car. “Being a dementia caregiver can be frustrating,” said Linda Coppinger, the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter’s executive director South Jersey. “The Alzheimer’s journey becomes your journey, too, and sometimes, you just need help navigating the disease and all that comes with it.” An Alzheimer’s Association study in 2015 found nearly 60 percent of surveyed dementia caregivers in the United States reported experiencing very high emotional stress. Sixty-two percent said caregiving was physically stressful.

Virginia “Ginny” Schwab Ronald McDonald House Family Room Assistant at AtlantiCare – Mainland
Virginia has been the Ronald McDonald House Family Room Assistant at AtlantiCare – Mainland for 13 years, but her love of serving families of sick children actually began when she worked as public relations in the 80’s for the newly opened Ronald McDonald House in Camden. Born in Haddonfield and raised in Cherry Hill, Ginny, now a Smithville resident, was a stay-at-home mom when she began working at RMHSNJ, a home-away-from-home for sick children. Giving comfort to the families by creating a space that gives them a break from their problems is a passion that motivates Ginny every day. Before she became a mother of two and a grandmother to eight, Ginny wanted to be a journalist and worked at the Courier Post, archiving files in the library. She currently writes a column for The Four Seasons, a newspaper for her development and enjoys spending Friday nights with her husband, Stephen and their friends. Although she always renews her commitment to eat healthy at the beginning of the year, Ginny is resolved to live out the mantra, “to thine own self be true” in 2017.

Lisa Nguyen, Client Services Manager, BAYADA Home Health Care
Inspired by her time as a hospice volunteer, she moved on to pursue a career in home health care and started an internship at BAYADA’s Linwood office during her senior year of college. While there, she learned as many facets of the business as possible, making her a valuable asset to her office. Now, three years later, she is a client services manager, supporting the needs of both her clients and their caregivers. “I take pride knowing that my clients are living happily and safely in their homes with the help of our home health aides and nurses. I love hearing from the clients about how much they appreciate the care they receive and how much they love their caregivers.” Nguyen attributes her success to the support she receives from BAYADA. She says that her director and colleagues are there for her 24/7 if she ever needs help—and she does the same for them. “BAYADA offers me the support to tackle any challenge I face—whether work-related or personal.” In her free time, Nguyen loves to explore new cities, try exotic foods, read a good book series, and attend Broadway plays.

January is National Blood Donor Month January is National Blood Donor Month and one of the most difficult times of the year to maintain a sufficient blood supply. Severe winter weather and seasonal illnesses often contribute to a seasonal decline in blood and platelet donations.
“Since her diagnosis, Chloe has required hospitalization, surgery, chemotherapy, and many, many blood transfusions,” said Camille Dewing, a family friend. “Chloe and her family have not had an easy journey, but blood donations given by generous donors have helped to save her life and encouraged her to keep fighting.” Transfusions of red cells and platelets can help save a patient’s life, or dramatically improve their quality of life from day to day. Leukemia and other cancers can cause anemia and internal bleeding, chemo and radiation can lower blood counts, and cancer-related surgeries can result in blood loss. “Patients like Chloe don’t get a holiday from needing blood, and the need for donors is constant,” said Dewing. “Chances are there’s a child or a family waiting for the gift you can give.”
Blood donations can make a difference to those who receive them, including two-year-old Chloe Rose of New Jersey. When Chloe Rose was diagnosed this past summer with stage three neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer affecting nearly 700 children annually, she went from being a typical happy, playful toddler to a very sick child almost overnight.

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama Submitted by Rita King, MSW, LCSW
I
t’s a new year and the dust of the 2016 election has settled. The new year will bring about new challenges and resolutions for all of us on an individual level as well as across the country. However, before we embark on our respective New Year’s resolutions, I believe it is important to reflect upon the impact made over the past eight years by the former First Lady, Michelle Obama: the first African American First Lady, wife, mother, fashionista, role model, advocate for healthy living, military service members and families, and also education. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on January 17, 1964 to parents Fraser and Marian. She had one sibling, an older brother, Craig. Michelle Robinson grew up in Chicago. Fraser worked for the City of Chicago and Marian was a secretary before becoming a housewife and mother to Michelle and Craig. Michelle Robinson was educated in the public school system up to high school years before attending a private school. Michelle Robinson would later be accepted to Princeton University to study sociology and African American studies. It is important to note that Princeton University did not admit African Americans until 1942, which only included four military men. Women were not admitted to Princeton until 1969. Statistically speaking, not only were women underrepresented at Princeton, African American women were outliers. After Princeton, Michelle was accepted to and attended Harvard Law School, which, as we all know, is another prestigious institution, and only began to admit women in 1953. After passing the bar exam, Michelle was hired to work at a prominent law firm in Chicago where, only a few short years later, she would meet Barack Obama - her future husband. Barack and Michelle Obama were married on October 3, 1992 and later had two daughters, Malia and Sasha. Prior to the birth of Malia and Sasha, Michelle Obama began to transition to public service. Michelle became the Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development in Chicago. Michelle also became the founder
of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, which was an AmeriCorps program to prepare youth for public service careers. Michelle then became the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago and also was the Vice President of Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center. As First Lady, Michelle Obama took on four initiatives that focused on societal issues such as obesity, education, the military, and international girls’ education. The names of the initiatives included Let’s Move, which focused on healthy families and addressing childhood obesity; Joining Forces, which focused on support to military service members, veterans and their families; Reach Higher, which was an initiative to inspire young people to continue educational opportunities past high school; and Let Girls Learn, which was an initiative to help young girls in other countries to complete their education and to “empower” young women. Michelle Obama also received numerous recognitions for her elegance and style. From the very beginning of her entrance into the White House, Michelle Obama has been analyzed, from her amazing arms to her style choices of everyday attire to formal wear. Michelle was listed in Essence magazine’s “25 of the World’s Most Inspiring Women” and was also listed in the Harvard alumni top 100 list as number 58. Michelle Obama was on the cover of Vogue magazine—and anyone who knows anything about fashion knows that traditionally only “supermodels” make the cover of Vogue! As Michelle Obama’s New Year transition begins from First Lady, it will also be a transition for her daughters. Michelle Obama’s daughters will have had the opportunity to observe their mother in a role that one can only imagine. They have also grown into inspiring young ladies over the past eight years in an environment that included constant surveillance as children of the President and First Lady. One could surmise that a significant factor in their maturity is not that their mother was the First Lady of the United States, but rather she was a mother to her daughters.
The County Woman Magazine www.TheCountyWoman.com
Michelle Obama will leave a legacy at the White House that includes her work with military families, empowering girls and women, and giving society hope for a better future. Michelle Obama displayed her support for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign and assisted with campaigning. Not only was the campaign monumental with Hillary Clinton’s run for President, it was also a movement in that it displayed support from First Lady Michelle Obama, which was historical. Michelle Obama will be remembered as a First Lady who had a significant impact on our nation, and it will be tough to fill her “well” worn and fabulous shoes!

The Atlantic County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division The Atlantic County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division hosted its annual Children’s Holiday Party for 60 children from Richmond Avenue School in Atlantic City and North Main Street School in Pleasantville. The children were treated to a magic show, custom-made games and activities, a pizza lunch, and individually selected gifts delivered by Santa Claus. “We are excited to be able to give back to the community we live and work in and to see the impact firsthand,” said Katrina Tattoli, the Director of Public Relations of the Young Lawyers Division. “The children have an amazing experience and always ask when they can come back to do it again.” The Young Lawyers Division hosts a number of fundraising events throughout the year to raise money for the Children’s Holiday Party and other community outreach events. To prepare for the party, Young Lawyers Division members coordinate with the teachers to select students for the party. The teachers ask the students what they want for Christmas and then pass each child’s list along to the Young Lawyers Division. The attorneys then go shopping and host a wrapping party to select and wrap over three hundred gifts for the children. The Young Lawyers Division is made up of attorney members of the Atlantic County Bar Association who have been practicing law for ten years or less. In addition to this event, the Young Lawyers Division sponsors many community education events in Atlantic County public schools focusing on civic education and legal issues.

Funny Farm Rescue:
A Magical Place
The Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary in Mays Landing, NJ, is known as a “magical place.” What makes the Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary different from all other animal rescues? Nearly everyone who comes to the farm from all walks of life describes it as “magical.” It’s how you feel when you arrive, what you see when you’re there, and how you feel when you leave. It changes you. Beautiful animals who once were injured, abandoned or abused now have an incredible place they can call home. Because of their sense of belonging, they can be truly happy, more than 350 of them! Somehow they know that they once had little to no hope and no one to love them or care for them, but not anymore. Nearly every animal who came to the Funny Farm Rescue came from bleak and dire situations. Now they live a happy life where they mingle with other animals who were rescued just like them. They have something in common now…each other. But where does the magic come from? Why aren’t other farms like this? Why are the animals so happy? Why does Funny Farm this farm have such an effect on people? Why do people Forma l will remember this place for years to come? be hel In a world of uncertainty, the Funny Farm Rescue is d on Februa an oasis from the world around it. Animals don’t sit with ry 4th ! sad faces behind cages with glass walls or a large ditch that separates them from humans. When you drive in, many animals roam free and come up to greet you! They are truly excited to see you and some will jump up into your car before you can undo your seat belts. It’s okay. It’s all okay. The laughter coming from your car and from the back is reminiscent of road trips you took with your family as a kid. The giggles never stop. You look back and there’s a goat named Cowboy in your car or a beautiful sweet dog named Farley. There may even be a cat sitting on your lap before you can step out of your van. When you finally do, you might feel a donkey named E’yore nudging you for a hug. You will see turkeys playing fetch with the dogs. You will see Socks, a beautiful white horse who comes to welcome you. You’ll see geese walking around in groups with a white sheep, all on their way to see you. Everyone is so happy. What you will not notice is a broken wing, a hobble or a missing ear. What you will feel is indescribable. This is the magic. It’s like a Christmas miracle that happens every single day at the Funny Farm Rescue. That magic stems from the heart of a single woman who imagined how life should be for hurt and neglected and unwanted animals and passed that idea on to her daughter: Laurie Zaleski, the Founder and President of the Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary. At her farm, there is no rich or poor, old or young, or black or white; there’s just a place where people can just be people and animals can love them unconditionally for providing a place for them to be happy, healthy, and free. The Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) charity and is open every Sunday and Tuesday from 8am-4pm free of admission so all people can come and feel such an amazing place where everyone just seems to belong, laughter is everywhere, and the animals are enjoying the best lives they could have ever have imagined. To see beautiful pictures and stories, please like us on Facebook: “Funny Farm Rescue.” We are located at 6908 Railroad Blvd., Mays Landing, NJ 08330.

Donna Andrews Photography “The Renaissance Woman in All of Us”
Renaissance - literally means “rebirth”, modern history, a cultural movement, a resurgence of learning based on classical sources. A technique of rendering a more natural reality. I studied classical art and earned my Master’s degree in Sculpture & Painting at Boston University. During my studies we were taught, “If you can master the human figure you can master any art form.” Hence, Classical Figurature comes natural to my style of photography. In art school models are nude. True models, not as social media defines “models.” They are everyday people, young and old, different shapes and sizes, and even vulnerable and awkward at times. As young artists we were challenged to see the hidden beauty in ordinary people; to convey to the viewers that our subject matter was unique. What separates ones artist’s work from another is the ability to humanize emotions, bring life into your subject without movement. My best work often took place by being still, waiting for the model to relax into the pose. Walking around to see the angle that revealed the most expression of the person. As a photographer I approach my work in the same way. It is second nature to me now. The image I created on this page was no different. Women especially want to look and feel beautiful but they themselves do not know how to express it. Rightfully so. True beauty is an inward quality that just has to be brought out. I love showing the beauty in every person I photograph. It may not always look the same, but it should not because we are all unique.
Find the Renaissance Woman in you. Michelle is a 39 year old woman. She is an everyday person that you would see at the grocery store or on a kids sport field in flip flops and sweats pants.
