Fashion & Beauty Looking For A Bra To Pair With Your Favorite Summer Outfit? The weather is finally warming up, it’s time to break out your favorite summer outfits. As we all know, you can’t just wear any bra or panties with these outfits… Spaghetti straps, boat neck and strapless necklines are just some of the difficulties that come along with these clothes. You don’t want to wait until you’re picking out your outfit to go out and realize you do not have the right bras or panties for what you want to wear! It’s time to schedule your free bra fitting now.

When you come in for your fitting, we’ll have you fill out a client card so we can keep track of what fits you best and what does not. We will ask you what you do not like about your current bras and find out a little bit about what you are looking for. After, we will take you back to our comfortable and spacious fitting room, where we will start the fitting process. We do not use

a measuring tape since it has proven to be inaccurate in fittings. We use a trial-and-error method, trying on different bras until we find out the size and style bra that works best for you. You do not have to worry about us seeing you naked or adjusting your breast in your bra. We do not need to see you naked and we will teach you how to adjust yourself properly into the bra. While we are finding out what size and style is best, you will also be shown why the bras do or do not fit. After our fitting you are welcome to try on anything you want in the store, with or without assistance. We also offer lingerie and shapewear fittings. We can help you get the right undergarments for any outfit. We can show you how to wear a corset or waist cincher and what the difference is between them, or to style your lingerie with a robe or thigh-highs no matter if you are an XS or a 4X. We are sure you will love this experience and want to share it with all of the ladies in your life!

Testimonial “I went in to get fitted for a bra as I knew I wasn’t wearing the right size. I am not a small woman and Julie was so very helpful finding me the proper fit. I will not buy my lingerie from anyone else. Superior service and very friendly. Thank you for a wonderful buying experience.”-SLB

“Through the years, many clients have asked if I knew a doctor who could treat humans with some of the amazing alternative therapies I use on animals. Mother’s Day! Show reverence for the “Divine Feminine.” May is a time to embrace the feminine aspect of ourselves and our lives. Rejoice in the wonderful privilege of being a woman. Relish the soft power that she possesses as well as her power. Being able to create and bring life into this world and having cycles that align with the moon is our connection to all of creation. The Divine Feminine is a sacred connection to Mother Earth and the energy that gives birth to ideas, expressions and dreams. Honoring her is an act of worship and an understanding of the universe.

People are beginning to listen to their intuition and trust their inner call to speak the truth. Divine Feminine lives in both men and women. We all have masculine and feminine energy within us. In yoga these energies are known as Shiva and Shakti, Yin and Yang. Feminine energy is rising. Raise your felt sense of Shakti. It means power, energy or force. She resides at the base of the spine, known as the root chakra. Coiled up like a small snake, she is waiting to be awakened. Shakti is described as feminine, personified as the goddess Devi. But, at its deepest level, she transcends gender. Yoga’s capacity to expand awareness, strengthen will and attune to extraordinary levels of intuitive knowledge is due to Shakti. She is the innate creativity that is at the heart of all things. She’s the life-force that makes a river flow just as she powers your breath and makes your heart beat. In essence Shakti is in everything and life itself. Awaken Shakti through meditation, breath work or mantra and chakra. Let it unfold naturally, sometimes in deep quiet. But it does take some work. Create the conditions for spiritual growth. Pay attention to Shakti and her subtle nudges. Lovingly welcome her and become more attuned to the flow in your body. She will invite you to let go and open to sensations. Then feel that sense of spaciousness. That is what Shakti feels like. Let this radiant energy move freely and with ease, uninterrupted. Shakti energy is always present and inherently healing. She can be a force for transformation. Qualities of feminine energy include receiving, listening, allowing, trusting, yielding, truthfulness, loving and passionate, sensitive and even wild and playful. A doorway to strengthening feminine energy is through emotions. This season we can all celebrate with an open heart, full of love and compassion, appreciation and gratitude for all that the Divine Feminine symbolizes. See opportunities for beauty everywhere and create it whenever you go. Find your sacred place and journey there. It is a healing and nurturing place of deep connection to nature and wisdom. Begin by connecting the soles of the feet to the earth. Feel the loving embrace of Mother Earth. This is deeply grounding and steadying. Tapping into the Divine Feminine, this practice of joining bare feet with Mother Earth is essential to our well-being. In this way your body is a vehicle for this nourishing

connection to the earth. Awaken the first and second chakra energy by practicing the following yoga poses: Mountain, Chair, Cobra, Sphinx, Bow, Lotus, Squat, Frog, Butterfly, Seated Twist, Wide Angle, Warrior Poses, Side Angle, Pyramid, Child, Locust. Use crystals to heal and balance the body. Rose quartz and kunzite are lovely for soothing your emotions. Receive healing by tapping into your sense of smell and its primitive connection to your soul. Dance, play and sing as an expression of self. Pay attention to where Grandmother Moon is in her cycle. Know where the new moon occurs and how to respond with intention-setting, quieting and turning inward. When the full moon is coming, notice your amplified energy, manifestations of intentions and high vibrations. Pay more attention to the solstices, equinoxes and eclipses to deepen your connection to the sacred feminine. Create a sacred sanctuary in your home and devote that space to beauty and the practice of presence. Give it texture, color and fragrance that imbue femininity and sensuality. Embrace and honor the tradition of celebrating the feminine. Let beauty feed your senses.

Financial Management

Comparing an “ABLE” to an “SNT”

Planning for a loved one with special needs is usually quite complicated. If you have a disabled child or family member, meeting his or her needs is a top priority. You provide physical and emotional support, arrange for care, and coordinate essential government benefits. In this issue of the County Woman we are sharing an article from Merrill Anderson and Company that compares an ABLE to an SNT. Individuals with special needs and their families have three choices when it comes to providing long-term financial support. First, there is a “first-party” special needs trust (SNT), funded with the assets of the person with the disabilities. For example, if a person became disabled as the result of a car accident and won damages in a court case, that money could go into a first-party special needs trust. It would be preserved to provide for a lifetime of medical care and support. A “third-party” special needs trust is one that has been set up by someone other than the disabled person. Parents or grandparents might fund such a trust for a child born with disabilities, for example. The child may become eligible for Supplemental Security Income or Medicaid, and the existence of the SNT will not impair those benefits. Finally, there is the ABLE account (Achieving a Better Life Experience). These accounts are of more recent vintage. These accounts are offered in 19 states so far, and more are expected to be launched this year. They are administered by the states. When ABLE accounts were first authorized by Congress, they were limited to in-state residents, but that restriction was removed in 2015. The upside of the ABLE account is that investment earnings are tax free, and it is easier to establish than an SNT, which needs a lawyer’s supervision. But that freedom comes with several downsides. The onset of the disability must have occurred before the beneficiary reached age 26. Each individual may have only one such account, and annual contributions are limited to $15,000. (This amount is the federal gift tax

exclusion, so it will rise in tandem to account for future inflation). Should the value of the ABLE account exceed $100,000, the SSI benefits will be reduced. With both the ABLE account and a first-party SNT, at the death of the beneficiary there is a “payback” to the state for the costs of Medicaid services. For the ABLE account, the payback dates to the creation of the trust, and for the SNT it covers the entire lifetime Medicaid expenses of the special needs person. A third-party SNT does not have the payback requirement, and it may include other beneficiaries for funds left in the account. This is an important area in which the services of your lawyer will be required.

Compare and Contrast ABLE account First-Party Special Needs Trust Third-Party Special Needs Trust Contribution limit $15,000 None None Tax deduction for contribution No No No Age limit Disability must None None occur before age 26 Maximum account size Varies by state, None None from $250,000 to $500,000 “Payback” required at death Yes Yes No Source: M.A. Co.

As trustee of many Special Needs Trusts, we recommend an ABLE account to the special needs client who was disabled prior to age 26 or to his or her guardian in order to provide another resource for allowable spending.

There are some limitations to this “step-up” in 2010 because of the one-year repeal of the Federal Estate tax, but for most people, this tax rule results in them paying little or no capital gains tax when they inherit real estate or stock. • When we advise clients about estate planning, we point out this rule when they want to make gifts during their lifetimes. We counsel against giving highly appreciated capital assets, because gifts of these assets during lifetime do not benefit from the “step-up” in basis at death, and the recipient gets the donor’s basis (“carryover basis”) and will have to pay capital gains tax when the asset is sold. This tax stuff is tough to get through, but understanding it can really save a lot of money.

Summer Is On The Way!

Lisa M Ledden MSN, APN-C

The days are getting longer and warmer, and the sun’s rays are more dangerous. It’s commonly known that 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lives. As most skin cancers are a direct result of sun exposure, there are ways you can protect yourself!

• Always choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB damage.

Sunscreen can prevent skin cancer, premature aging, and sunburn. Sunscreens come in a variety of vehicles (lotions, creams, gels, sticks and sprays) as well as strengths or sun protective factors (SPF). How do you know how to choose?

• Always use an SPF 30 or higher • Choose a water-resistant sunscreen • Use enough to fully cover your body—1 ounce or enough to fill a shot glass

• Sunscreen sprays are convenient, but are they as good as lotions, creams or gels?

The FDA continues to evaluate the effectiveness of sunscreen sprays. The concern is that it is difficult to know if you have used enough to cover all sun-exposed areas. If choosing a spray, make sure to use enough and rub it in.

• Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating. • If you have sensitive skin, or want to avoid chemically based sunscreens, choose products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide Products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are physical blockers, not chemical blockers. Babies under 6 months of age should be kept out of the sun. Also, don’t forget to cover up as much as possible with hats, protective clothing, umbrellas and sunglasses. As a general rule of thumb, if your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade—this is generally between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the rays of the sun are strongest.

Lastly, don’t forget to schedule your annual skin exam today!!

Enjoy the summer!!

Testimonials:

“Lisa Ledden is the epitome of a very knowledgeable, caring professional; I say this as a caregiver of my partner Patte, a patient of Lisa’s for over 10 years; I want to speak as a caregiver, because I wonder if the loved ones of patients are considered in their feelings about a partner with a potentially fatal disease, and how someone like Lisa can be the difference between anxiety and peace; I truly believe that Lisa has kept Patte alive, by diagnosing her 5 melanoma’s at early stages; Lisa has a very special gift of melanoma recognition...which has gone undetected by others; so, as a caregiver, I am extremely grateful for Lisa...she gives the whole family a sense of comfort and trust; to me, she is a real blessing.” - Linda Wexler

“I had been going to the same dermatologist for years. She was selling her practice and moving to New York. I was a little nervous about that but just stayed in her office and stayed with the dermatologist that took over her practice. I went to make an appointment and could not get in with a doctor but they told me they had a female nurse practitioner named Lisa that I could see, So I agreed. When I first met her I was thrilled! I knew we would be friends but I knew she was good at what she does. She has a better eye than any doctor I have ever seen! She found a melanoma on my back that was .3 cm was very deep and I had to have a wide excision done at Robert Wood Johnson hospital with a specialist. If that had grown I’m sure the outcome would’ve been different than today. I am fine and healthy. That was January 2003 when we got the results that it had not spread. I continue to see her every year. She cuts off 3 moles and we talk! We have become friends! I love her! She is bright, professional, timely and accommodating! I recommend her to everyone I can at every opportunity I can! She is the best dermatologist I’ve had and I hope to keep seeing her for a long, long time! Thank you, Lisa Ledden!” - Kerri Byrne

Higher Education

Dr. Barbara Gaba Making History at Atlantic Cape Community College As the first female and African American president in the 50year history at Atlantic Cape May Community College, Dr. Barbara Gaba is all about making the most out of adversity. Her vision for the college remains as true today as it was when she took on the role in 2017. That is, for the college to become the region’s preferred choice for higher education, professional training, and to serve as a leading catalyst for workforce development. She adds, “My goal has always been to turn challenges into opportunities for our entire community.” Currently at work with the college and its partners to anticipate and fulfill the region’s educational needs, she is a big believer in the value of partnerships. Another one of her goals is to strengthen the community’s economy by collaborating with K-12 and higher education institutions. Dr. Gaba is deeply committed to the mission of the college and to providing educational pathways for student success. She maintains it’s all about about understanding your strengths and weaknesses. “Once weaknesses are identified, make a conscious effort to turn that weakness into a strength. There will be challenges along the way but don’t be overtaken by them. Instead, view them as opportunities to make changes for the better,” she says. Understanding the critical role that education plays in transforming lives, she has embarked on an aggressive plan to strengthen student services and enhance program offerings that address the needs of residents in Atlantic and Cape May counties. As a comprehensive, two-year community college serving the residents of Atlantic and Cape May counties, the college offers 46 career, transfer, and workforce development programs to more than 5,000 students at three campuses in New Jersey. Dr. Gaba has been the recipient of several awards, including the “Woman of Excellence in Higher Education,” awarded by the Union County Commission on the Status of Women; “Exemplary Leader Award from the Chair Academy for Leadership and Development; the Rotary Foundation “District Service Award” and was named one of the “African American Women Leaders in NJ” by the South Jersey Journal. During her illustrious career, Dr. Gaba has earned extensive experience in higher

education administration, teaching and research with proficiency in the areas of academic master planning; policy development; student services; budget development, and academic governance. As an effective thought leader, she uses her voice to inspire and shape the student population. Prior to joining Atlantic Cape, Dr. Gaba served as Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Union County College. While responsible for the overall operation of the college’s urban Elizabeth campus, she also served as the chief academic officer and administrator providing vital leadership and strategic direction to the campus, faculty, and programs. She has also served as Dean of Academic and Student Support Services at Camden County College, and as Associate Director of the Office of Board Affairs and Government Relations at the New Jersey Department of Higher Education. Dr. Gaba sits on the boards of several organizations including the Atlantic City Executive Council, Atlantic County Economic Alliance; Greater Atlantic City Chamber Board of Directors; Atlantic County Workforce Development Board; and the NJ Community College Consortium for Workforce & Economic Development. She is also a member of the NJ Presidents’ Council and the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) State & Federal Policy Committee. Born and raised in New York City, she earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Bayero University, as well as a M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from Rutgers University and a B.A. in Education Sociology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She resides in Mays Landing with her husband, Peter and has two adult children and two grandsons.

Coastal Fashion With A Modern Bohemian Flair Home to one of the hottest women’s boutiques in New Jersey, Seagrass has enjoyed somewhat of a cult following since opening in 2016. Owner Kevin Heck’s passion for the industry is evident as soon as you visit his store. With his background in Public Relations and degree in fashion marketing, you could say he is well suited for the role. The store is filled with the hottest trends in casual beachwear and resort clothing with that “boho chic” feel. He adds, “At Seagrass Boutique our motto has always been about giving the best customer experience. We take the time to figure out the wants and needs of our clients. We listen, we understand different body types, and our goal is to provide an experience that you won’t receive online.” ACW: What is the average age of your customer?

Kevin: Seagrass offers something for every age. Whether it is a bracelet, a delicious candle, casual, comfortable outfits, faux leather jackets, soft vegan suede slim pants, or a beautiful dress for a special occasion. We have you covered! The average age of our customers is between 20 and 65.

ACW: What do you enjoy most about owning your business? Do you find any part challenging?

Kevin: The most gratifying part is the gift of meeting and doing business with clients who have become fast friends. I’m honored to have met so many great people. By owning my own business, I am able to pick and choose fashion styles that make a statement, but are still comfortable, all at the same time. It is also wonderful receiving feedback from my clients that love everything they have purchased. The best part is when they leave the store with a smile. As we all know, there has been a shift in retail. With the convenience of online and big box fashion, it has become increasingly hard to compete. We are always trying to find new styles and items that make us stand out and become a destination in the South Jersey area.

ACW: What essential pieces are necessary to achieve that “Bohemian” look?

Kevin: My interpretation of Bohemian is styles focused on free and flowy fabrics. Some staples to include in your wardrobe are a maxi skirt, neutral colored ankle boots or gladiators, lacey cardigans, the standard printed maxi dress, and of course tunic style t-shirts and embroidered blouses. Overall, one should dress with the mindset of being free and casual in styles that are eye-catching, while still being whimsical.

ACW: What style trends do you see on the rise for 2019?

Kevin: If you don’t like colour, Spring/Summer 2019 may be a testing time for you, because along with neons and yellows, there’ll be a load of tie dye and animals prints. Following on those tie-dye vibes comes crochet, color blocking and did I say animals prints??

Kevin Heck

ACW: What types of sunglasses are in style these days?

Kevin: We offer a wide array of styles and manufactures. We carry the Australian sunglass line, Quay that is upbeat and very eye catching. With Quay, its all about the bigger, the brighter, the better!!! Aviators with flash lenses, oversized cat eyes and shields. We also carry Ray Ban, Maui Jim, RAEN and Tom Ford depending upon store location. Overall, the sunglasses for 2019 are larger in size and bursting in style.

ACW: How is your new location doing?

Kevin: Two years ago we opened in Ocean City and the store continues to do very well. Each store has its own aesthetic and the OC location is a bit more laid back and beachy. The clientele in OC is looking for a more casual look at a softer price point. We have taken the time to pick our styles that offer the ability to transform an outfit from beach to boardwalk or from day into evening. It’s a busy, upbeat place to be during the summer and I am excited for our third season!

Close to 25 percent of VA Patients Have Diabetes Written By Barbara Greenling, DNP, MSN, APN-C

American Veterans — Time to Take Action

Nearly one in four Veterans receiving care from VA has diabetes. This is partly attributable to the older average age of Veterans compared to the general US population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 26 million people, or about 8 percent of the US population, have diabetes. That includes about 11 million persons 65 and older, or about 27 percent of seniors. In the United States, about one-in-four persons with diabetes are not aware that they have the condition. While exact numbers are not available, it is likely that the number is lower for Veterans receiving regular VA primary care. However, many Veterans of all ages are at risk for diabetes because of the high rate of obesity and those who are overweight, estimated at over 70 percent of Veterans receiving VA care.

“About one-in-four persons with diabetes are not aware that they have the condition.” Weight Loss and Physical Activity

An individual does not have to achieve drastic weight loss. Losing about five percent of one’s weight will help. In recent studies, a weight loss and exercise program was more effective than medication in both younger and older individuals. The medication was not effective in persons older than 60. The VA’s MOVE! Weight Management Program is available to all Veterans who are overweight or obese and for whom weight management is appropriate. It supports Veterans in developing plans that work for them to lose or maintain weight through balanced diet, physical activity, and behavior change approaches.

For the MOVE! program to be tailored to the individual’s needs, the Veteran can complete a 23 item questionnaire. More information is available at www.move.VA.gov. MOVE! is available in multiple convenient formats including group sessions, telephone-based care, and a new home messaging program called TeleMOVE! which uses the telephone line, provides daily support, and is interfaced with a scale for weekly home weigh-ins. Talk with your Primary Care Team about MOVE! Although the focus is to identify individuals at higher risk for developing diabetes, it is important to remind persons who already have diabetes of the importance of weight loss and physical activity in managing diabetes. Additionally, persons with diabetes or at risk for diabetes should manage other conditions, such as hypertension or high lipid levels, appropriately, and if they have diabetes, they should be screened at regular intervals for early signs of kidney, foot or eye conditions.

Diabetes and Agent Orange

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is one of the diseases VA presumes is associated with exposure to herbicides, such as Agent Orange. Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange do not have to prove a connection between their type 2 diabetes mellitus and military service to be eligible for VA benefits. Healthy eating habits and exercise can help prevent this chronic disease. Visit the Agent Orange homepage to learn more about Agent Orange and VA benefits. The American Diabetes Association provides an online Diabetes Risk Test.

There’s Something About Ketamine By Charles E. Meusburger, M.D. The discussion about ketamine must start with an explanation about treatment-resistant depression for the purpose of this article. Ketamine has been around awhile; however, there is new evidence and ongoing research about how ketamine may be a strong contender for treating stubborn depression. Treatment-Resistant Depression

The phrase “treatment-resistant depression” (TRD) is a clinical description of Major Depressive Disorder that does not adequately respond to at least two antidepressant trials at an adequate dose over a period of time, usually 6 to 8 weeks. There are various clinical descriptions of TRD, ranging from no response to treatment at all, to the inability to achieve full symptom remission. Examples of causal factors for inadequate response include patient non-compliance, inadequate treatment regimen, co-occurring disorders, incorrect diagnosis, and genetic predisposition. Individuals experience depression differently. Some have a myriad of chronic, intrusive symptoms; others may experience fewer symptoms, albeit still intrusive and in the sphere of depression. Symptoms include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, emptiness, irritability, fatigue, sleeplessness, or hypersomnia, guilt, anxiety, frustration, changes in appetite, low energy, inability to concentrate or make decisions, limited recall, anger and frustration. These symptoms represent a heavy burden felt on a continuous basis and may lead to “giving up” and thoughts of suicide or even homicide in severe cases. These are among the reasons depression is such a serious condition and can be elusive and resistant to treatment.

Treatment Modalities For Major Depressive Disorder

Over the years, depression has been treated with tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, SSRIs and SNRIs. While these terms may not be familiar to many, the primary point is these are the medications used to treat depression, stress, anxiety, and similar disorders since the early 1950s. The purpose of these medications is to impact poorly functioning brain synapses. A brain synapse is the small area between two nerve cells that allows brain chemicals, or neurotransmitters, to pass. This is important to know because those synapses are where much of the action takes place for psychopharmacological treatment (psychiatric medications). The medications make the synapses more available for receiving neurotransmitters (brain messengers), which, in turn, diminish or alleviate patient symptoms. So, what’s the problem? Well, these medications work well for a cadre of individuals. The problem is it takes a long time for symptom relief to occur. According to Psychiatric Times, March 2019, “Approximately two-thirds of patients do not achieve symptom remission with a single medication trial.” In fact, according to the same article, when patients do get relief, it can take quite a while because the medications “are slow-acting antidepressants (SAADs) with a delayed onset of action; thus it can take weeks to months before patients experience clinical benefit.” Due to the delayed onset of antidepressants currently used, the risk of cognitive impairment and suicide increases, including for those with PTSD and bipolar disorder.

the brain synapses, the difficulty treating depression, and the slow-acting medications that have been used over the years. The primary action of ketamine and esketamine is on the synapses of the brain by making them more available for neurotransmitters, thereby effectively impacting depression and its sequelae. Multiple studies have shown ketamine and esketamine demonstrate significant benefits for suicidal ideation and PTSD, “even after adjusting for simultaneous reductions in depressive symptoms.” Moreover, these drugs are considered rapid acting anti-depressives (RAADs) because improvement can be demonstrated within 4 hours, with peak response in 24 hours and effectiveness for about 7 to 10 days. Maintenance therapy requires repeated treatment, according to recent protocols. For rapid acting anti-suicidal symptoms (RAASs), the drugs showed effect within 24 hours and remained for approximately 1 week. Ketamine was shown to be superior to midazolam, a comparative short-acting hypnotic sedative drug. And based on the results of intranasal trials of esketamine, it has been labeled a “breakthrough therapy” by the FDA. The big clinical difference is the innovative thinking behind chronic stress pathology. While not getting into unnecessary detail for the purpose of this writing, the thinking behind the efficacy of medications designed to affect chronic stress pathology via neurons and neurotransmitters has undergone a major paradigm shift from one type of neurotransmitter system to another. This change in thinking and the correlating clinical trials support ketamine and esketamine as a new tool in the treatment box. Ketamine and esketamine have very powerful effects. As such, only providers trained in their administration can dispense them, preferably psychiatrists in the appropriate facility. Administration and dispensation will be monitored through the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. Finally, there is varying data on whether or not insurances will cover treatment with ketamine or esketamine. However, the outlook seems positive because of their expeditious and efficacious qualities for managing the dangerous symptoms of depression.

Enter Ketamine And Esketamine

Ketamine’s new outlook has crossed over from a drug of abuse, outside of its primary function as an anesthetic, to a heralded treatment recently approved by the FDA for TRD. It continues to undergo clinical trials for other uses, but to date has shown expeditious response from patients with difficult-to-treat depression. Ketamine has been used for years as an anesthetic. It has also been used as a drug of abuse and has many names. However, the relevance for this writing is that esketamine, which is S+ (ketamine), is now available for dispensing to certified prescribers and is the latest drug to show its level of effectiveness since the 1950s. For the chemists out there, esketamine is the “S” enantiomer of ketamine. The two chemicals have the same molecular makeup, but are different. Ketamine is administered as an IV solution. Esketamine is administered as a nasal solution, or IN. One of the most recent esketamine brand drugs released is SPRAVATO™.

If You Have Been Told You Are Not A Candidate For Dental Implants:

Are Your TeethSEE A DR. Constant BANKS!Source Of Pain And Embarassment?

Often, patients are told that they are not candidates for dental implants because they “don’t have enough bone” or their “sinus is too low.”

You don’t have to live like this anymore!

Both conditions are correctable problems in almost all patients, according to Dr. Banks. When the gum ridge where teeth are missing is too thin to place a dental implant, bone grafting can be performed to correct the problem. What that means is that a bone replacement product, or even the patient’s own bone, can be placed into the deficient area, stabilized, and allowed to heal. Following healing, dental implants can be placed into that area and then restored with porcelain teeth. This procedure is called “ridge augmentation” YOUR TEETH CONSTANT andARE can be accomplished in A both the top and bottom jaws.

Patients Are Treated Like Family at the Office of Dr. Kathy Banks In addition to caring for her patients, Dr. Kathy Banks is highly focused on perfecting her team in the office. Although it did take some time, she has now found the ideal fit. Team members Monica, Danielle, Diana, Amanda, Jessica and Sonya work exceptionally well together and enable her to provide the excellent patient care that she is known for. She adds, “The most important aspect of our team is that we mutually respect and care about one another. Silly interpersonal conflicts and office politics are distractions, and stand in the way of delivering excellent patient care. It takes extra work to achieve and maintain this level of professionalism, but it allows us to keep our focus centered on our patients.”

As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, she has had numerous papers published and is a frequent presenter for continuing education classes. With more than 15 years of experience treating patients of all ages, she is able to treat most of them comfortably in her office. However, when circumstances dictate, Dr. Banks holds hospital privileges in three hospitals: Jersey Shore University Hospital, Southern Ocean Medical Center, and Community Medical Center. She treats patients on an outpatient basis when necessary. Another enhancement to her practice has been starting ongoing education in various areas of expertise. “Before opening this office, I witnessed staff members elsewhere going through the motions of their jobs. I did not want this to be my team. As a life- long learner, I insist on investing in the professional development of all of my team members, including myself. The more knowledge and new skills we are able to master, the more we have to offer our patients. Adding new skills and reinforcing techniques we already practice will enhance our patients’ experience from start to finish,” she says. Dr. Banks’ philosophy is that every patient deserves to be treated like a family member. This often means that team members must stay late, come in early, or adjust their lunch hours to accommodate a patient with a truly serious condition. This is their commitment: to provide excellent, quality care to their patients. When you are a patient of Dr. Banks, quality care begins the moment you call the office, and continues until discharged. She explains, “Staff members Danielle and Diana guide patients through the registration and scheduling process, and answer the myriad of insurance related questions and concerns. Then, Amanda, Jessica

and Arly take over with the “hands on “ part of patient care, assisting me with evaluation, taking x-rays and the surgical-anesthetic aspects of care. These three ladies are so compassionate with our patients that they are able to make a surgical appointment pleasant. Their clinical abilities allow me to perform my work at a much higher level,” she adds. New technology plays a big part in the office of Dr. Banks. “Hands down, the number one development in oral and maxillofacial surgery has been integrating 3D imaging into patient care. Cone Beam CT scanning is indispensable in diagnosing common oral conditions such a cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth ” she says. She also uses 3D images for dental implant surgery and can perform virtual surgical implant surgery using either of the two software programs. She explains, “From this work up, a surgical guide can be fabricated and used in the surgery procedure so that the implants are placed in the exact angulation and depth as planned. This is called “guided surgery” and I use this routinely.” Another use for the CBCT scan is jaw reconstruction. “I have used CBCT scans to plan orthognathic surgery procedures where the jaws are cut and repositioned so the teeth match up. The virtual surgery plan done on the computer is used to generate surgical guides that help me perform the jaw surgery with enhanced precision,” she says.

Dr. Kathy Banks received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and received her DMD from Temple University School of Dentistry. After dental school, she completed an Advanced Education General Dentistry program and then completed her 4-year specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She was later awarded her Board Certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Board of Anesthesiology. She is currently the first female Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, and organization dedicated to improving the quality and safety of patient care by advancing innovation in oral and maxillofacial surgery research and education.

Adopt Your New Best Friend Today The incredible bond between people and their pets and the many benefits that pets bring to our lives is a celebration of how positively animals can influence our lives. Pets not only provide their owners with companionship, but also with several health benefits. They may help lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels and ease tension, anxiety and depression. When people come in contact with animals they tend to experience a general feeling of peace and wellbeing and are perceived as being more happy and healthy. Pet ownership increases the opportunity for exercise and socialization with other pet owners. The therapeutic value of animals for individuals in hospitals and nursing homes has also been documented. Children learn to be more nurturing and compassionate adults by being raised among animals. Taking guardianship of an animal that has been abandoned is a wonderful and fulfilling experience rewarded by unconditional love and companionship. Animal shelters and rescue groups appreciate the public’s support, as do the many pets that are fortunate to find forever homes. Kathy Kelsey Manager

Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures In March, the Alzheimer’s Association published its 2019 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report—an annual publication which reveals the burden of Alzheimer’s and dementia on individuals, caregivers, government and the nation’s health care system. The report takes a look at the latest national statistics and information on Alzheimer’s prevalence, incidence, mortality and morbidity, costs of care and caregiving. Among the report’s key findings: • An estimated 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2019, including 200,000 under the age of 65.

four in 10 (40 percent) have ever discussed these concerns with a health care provider. While most seniors (93 percent) say they trust their doctor to recommend testing for thinking or memory problems if needed, fewer than half of primary care physicians (47 percent) say it is their standard protocol to assess all patients age 65 and older for cognitive impairment. The Alzheimer’s Association is working to educate physicians on best practices for conducting brief cognitive assessments and to ensure all seniors understand what to expect from an assessment. As the number of individuals living with a continues to increase, early detection becomes increasingly important. To download the full report and infographic, visit alz.org/facts and share the facts to join the fight. For other ways to learn how you can help end Alzheimer’s, visit alz.org/delval or call the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900.

• Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. • Barring the development of medical breakthroughs, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s dementia may nearly triple from 5.6 million to 13.8 million by 2050. • Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and it is the fifth-leading cause of death for those age 65 and older. • Total payments for health care, long-term care and hospice care for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias are projected to increase to more than $1.1 trillion in 2050 (in 2019 dollars). • Approximately two-thirds of caregivers are women, and onethird of dementia caregivers are daughters. • One in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. This year’s Facts and Figures special report found that just one in 7 seniors (16 percent) says s/he receives regular cognitive assessments for memory or thinking issues during routine health checkups, and while half of all seniors (51 percent) are aware of changes in their cognitive abilities— including changes in their ability to think, understand or remember—only

Louise Smith The “Mother” of the Roadway

ESPN.COM.

’Tis the season. Spring has sprung, the month of May hosts Mother’s Day, and it is NASCAR season! I have grown up around cars my entire life, as my father owns an auto body business. I have spent years driving various types of cars and trucks and learned to drive as soon as I could reach the gas pedal. I spent racing seasons at Atco Raceway watching family race cars down the quarter-mile track. So when my father called me to recommend a featured woman in history for my next publication, I was immediately intrigued. When we think of female race car drivers, most of us think of the infamous Danica Patrick. However, there were two women in particular who paved the roadway for the future of female race car drivers. Louise Smith was identified to many on the NASCAR circuit as the “First Lady.” Born on July 31, 1916, Louise was a feisty driver who is known to have always embraced the thrill of outrunning the law. In 1946 a racing promoter by the name of Bill France was scouting for females to enhance attraction to the racing ESPN.COM. circuit. Bill France encouraged Louise to participate in the Greenville-Pickens Speedway race and she finished third in a 1939 Ford. Fittingly, Louise’s husband owned a junkyard; however, he did not support her need for speed. It is reported that Louise got behind the wheel of her husband’s new Ford Coupe and drove it to Daytona with only intentions to watch the race and ended up as a participant! Louise ended up in the race with a frontpage finish after crashing the Ford. Suffice to say Louise’s husband was not happy with her taking the car or her performance. Louise was a popular figure on the racing scene until 1952. She raced all through Canada and the United States with wins and many bumps and bruises, including broken bones. Although Louise gained publicity as a female race car driver, she was not always welcomed by her fellow male drivers. It was a tough sport for women and she would not receive full acknowledgement of her accomplishments until she was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama in 1999 (47 years after her last race). Louise was a legend who loved the adrenaline rush of the roadway and who had a need for speed and participated with more energy and enthusiasm than many of her male counterparts. wikipedia.com

It would not be until 1963 that the name Janet Guthrie would become a popular name on the raceway when she entered the game. Janet was born on March 7, 1938 in Iowa. A pilot at the age of 17, she attended the University of Michigan and had a background in aeronautics. Janet worked as an engineer for an aviation company for six years. She eventually was one of four females to qualify for a scientist-astronaut program through NASA. Janet’s racing career started off when she purchased a Indystar.com. Jaguar XK120 Coupe. This was a vehicle in which she would complete in gymkhanas through hills and trails. Janet quickly upgraded to an XK140 (bigger, faster engine) to earn her ranking in the Sports Club of America races. Janet is known as the first female to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in 1977. Car builder Rolla Vollsetdt had a car and invited Janet for a test drive. It ended up that Janet qualified to compete in the race and this launched her into AARP.org. the professional racing arena. Although she finished 9th in the race, she was acknowledged as the “Top Rookie” in the race that year. In fact, it has been reported that she was a member of an all-female racing team from 1966 to 1971! Janet’s racing helmet and driver’s suit are on display at the Smithsonian Institute, and she was among the first female “athletes” to be entered into the Women’s Sports Hall of Fame. Janet struggled with facing criticism from the male drivers; however, she persevered and kept qualifying for races. Determined, Janet never gave up her passion to participate in the sport she loved. Janet wrote a book entitled Janet Guthrie: A Life at Full Throttle, which was published in 2005.
