SENSATIONAL NEUROPATHY CARE AT

Peripheral Neuropathy is a nerve disorder known to affect the lives of millions of Americans with debilitating symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning and prickling pains in the legs, feet, arms and hands. Over time, many people also develop difficulty with walking, balance and muscle weakness. It is a complication associated with several different medical conditions, including Diabetes, Cancer, Peripheral Vascular Disease and Metabolic disorders most commonly. While some cases improve when the underlying cause is managed effectively, sometimes the cause may not always be detectable. As nerve damage tends to worsen over time, it is crucial to be proactive with proper treatment, avoiding any negative impact on quality of life.

NUMBNESS, ALTERED SENSATION TINGLING OR BURNING SHARP, SHOOTING PAIN MUSCLE WEAKNESS, CRAMPING LOSS OF BALANCE, COORDINATION DIFFICULTY WALKING When functioning normally, the peripheral nerves relay messages from the central nervous system, brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. However, this key function becomes disrupted by disease processes that may impair circulation to peripheral blood vessels, particularly the smaller ones (capillaries), which enter nerve tissues. Without sufficient blood flow making it through the capillaries, essential oxygen and nutrients cannot get into the nerve tissues while the waste products of metabolism cannot get out. The peripheral nervous system eventually becomes distressed and damaged due to starvation and toxicity.

MicroVas is a FDAcleared, advanced treatment option that delivers electromagnetic energy to the affected limb(s), stimulating increased circulation to the surrounding tissues. This innovative technology causes blood to pump and circulate much more efficiently by elevating tissue oxygen levels, laying the groundwork for new tissue growth and repair, while accelerating the healing process. Microvas therapy may also promote lymphatic drainage, notably reducing swelling in some instances and positively influencing the body’s immune response. In our experience, MicroVas’ therapeutic effects are often substantial and our unique approach of implementation including manual hands-on therapy and functional conditioning for strength and balance is designed to help you achieve optimal results for long-term relief. “After consulting with four different doctors who told me they could not help me, I came to REHABILITY with hope of lessening my neuropathy pain and improving my walking. The treatments I received helped me realize this hope was possible, now that I have less pain and the ability to walk up to a mile. Dr. Barthel has also done an excellent job on the swelling in my legs, which have gotten smaller in size. Thank you all so much.” – Bob M. “We personally invite you to schedule a comprehensive evaluation to determine if you are a MicroVas candidate and to learn more about our One-of-a-Kind Neuropathy Program!” –The REHABILITY Team...We Can Help! *Most major medical insurances accepted, including Medicare.

Celebrating the start of our 9th year!

It’s Summertime! What a wonderful thing to say after experiencing what felt like a forever Winter. Each year, I look forward to the carefree season when the sun is brighter and the days are longer. Whether it is picking apart crabs with a few friends or relaxing down the Shore with my family, Summertime is the perfect setting for everything fun! One of my favorite Summer activities is spending time with my Chocolate Lab, Bear. On a mild Summer day, we enjoy heading to the dog beach, taking a stroll to the ice cream shop for a “pup cup,” or just simply lounging on my patio with a cup of iced tea. To me, there is nothing better than a dog’s love for its owner. This year marks the celebration of the 9th year of the Monmouth County Woman Publication. In this issue, you may notice a few design alterations. With Summer rolling in, we wanted to refresh our look, always with the reader in mind. We hope you enjoy some of our new design elements as you explore this issue of the Monmouth County Woman magazine! We also hope your Summer is a series of magical moments shared with your family and friends. Thank you for your continued support of the Monmouth County Woman magazine.

Dentistry Solutions For Teething Babies Any parent of a toddler or child can certainly tell you that when a baby begins to get those first baby teeth, it is no fun for baby or for the parent. Teething can occur at any time from about six months on. It varies wildly from baby to baby; some are born with already erupted front teeth and some seem to take forever to get those first teeth in. But most babies have some teething pain at one time or another, and anything a parent can do to help is welcomed.

First, be sure to establish that teeth are really the reason for the crying, drooling, low-grade fevers and fussiness. You can run your finger along the gum line and usually feel the swollen areas where teeth are trying to come through. But if there is any question at all, let the baby’s doctor tell you if it is teething or something else. Teething babies love to bite down on things; it seems to relieve the pressure even if just for a bit. There are water-filled teething rings you can buy, and when they are either put into the refrigerator or freezer, the cold helps the discomfort a lot. You need to have several of these so that when they warm up, another cold one is ready. Another possibility is a clean, frozen washcloth to chew on. Cold foods can help quite a bit. Try feeding baby chilled applesauce or favorite baby food fruit, and try offering it on a cold spoon. Putting some chilled water in a bottle can also help. Just make sure it is not too cold, of course. This can also help to make sure baby does not get dehydrated from all of the drooling. There are analgesic gels that you can buy and rub on the baby’s gums. These should not be over-used but they can numb the area for a time. Just make sure you get the gels that are specifically made for babies. If all else fails, consider giving baby some Tylenol. Be careful with the dose and do

not over-use this, but it can be helpful at bedtime and if baby has a lowgrade fever. Due to the excessive drooling that teething causes, baby may get a rash on the chin or around the mouth. Do your best to keep that area dry and if a rash occurs, gently pat some baby lotion onto it. Teething can be a trying time for both parent and baby. Just remember it will pass. But if it seems to last longer than you think it should, take the baby to see a pediatric dentist just to be safe.

Summer Safety Tips for Seniors Deborah Walsh,

Executive Director, HomeWorks

Summertime is a time for fun and relaxation, but for seniors, the heat and sun can be dangerous unless proper precautions are taken. Here are some tips that can be used to make sure summer is safe and fun. • Stay hydrated – Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than

younger people because they lose their ability to conserve water as they age. They also can become less aware of their thirst and have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes. Remember to drink water often and be sure to pack some for those long summer drives. • Talk to your doctor – Check with your medical team to make sure that any medications you are taking won’t be affected by higher temperatures. Some medications are less effective if stored at temperatures higher than room temperature (approximately 78 degrees). • Keep cool – Even small increases in temperature can shorten the life expectancy for seniors who are coping with chronic medical conditions. Shopping malls, movie theaters and libraries provide welcome, cool spaces if a senior’s own home isn’t air conditioned. They also provide a great opportunity to get out of the house and get some exercise, without the exhaustion of the heat. • Stay in touch – High temperatures can be life-threatening, so communication plays an important role in ensuring the safety of the elderly. For seniors you should let friends and family know if you’ll be spending an extended period of time outdoors, even if you are only gardening. Caregivers should check on the health and welfare of their loved ones at least twice a day.

• Wear the right stuff – Dress for the weather. Natural fabrics (such as

cotton) are cooler than synthetic fibers. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothes to help feel cooler and more comfortable. • Rub on sunscreen and wear a hat – Caregivers, family and friends can help by gently reminding loved ones about applying sunscreen and wearing a hat. • Know the early sign of hyperthermia – Be particularly cautious about abnormally high body temperatures – a condition known as hyperthermia. Heat stroke is an advanced form of hyperthermia that can be life-threatening. Make sure to know the warning signs and get medical attention immediately if you or anyone you know experiences these symptoms: o Body temperature greater than 104 degrees o A change in behavior, such as acting confused, agitated or grouchy o Dry, flushed skin o Nausea and vomiting o Headache o Heavy breathing or a rapid pulse o Not sweating, even if it’s hot out o Fainting If you follow these tips, there’s no reason you can’t have an enjoyable and fun-filled summer, no matter how old you are.

The lumps or knots that form are uncomfortable to some people; however, rarely is it painful. Dupuytren’s contracture mainly affects the ring and small finger, followed by the long finger, but it can occur in any digit. In many cases, both hands are affected, but each hand can be affected differently.

Professional Dentistry

Smiles Come Easy At Aesthetic Dental Creations After a visit with Dr. Balaji Srinivasan, otherwise known as Dr. Balaji, and his team at Aesthetic Dental Creations you quickly realize that this is not your typical dentist’s office. They are all about creating relationships along with your dental health. He adds, “We provide our patients with the highest standard of care and service. When coming up with goals for my practice, the main priority was to treat our patients the way I would like to be treated. That would mean he would know me personally, and I would not feel like a number when visiting their office.” Dr. Balaji is a stickler for quality care and not having his patients wait. You will never see a waiting room full of people. “I don’t expect my patients to wait. I respect their time and providing quality dental care is my priority. Quality over quantity every single time.” Besides having the latest in advanced technology and cutting edge procedures, Dr. Balaji and his staff take the time to educate their patients about their oral health. In addition to general dentistry, Dr. Balaji and his talented team perform root canals, veneers, periodontal therapy, deep bleaching, TMJ treatment, and all-porcelain crowns. Your first visit to their office is the most critical and thorough one. From our digital radiographs which have one tenth the radiation exposure as traditional x-rays, to our digital photography, you will be able to see the condition of your dental health in high definition.” Also part of this exam is a head/neck exam, oral cancer screening, and periodontal evaluation. Once he compiles all of the results, Dr. Balaji comes up with recommendations on how to treat your dental, as well as your overall health. A treatment that Dr. Balaji offers is “Six Month SmilesTM”, also known as short term orthodontics for adults who do not want to have comprehensive orthodontic treatment and are mostly concerned with the appearance of their front teeth. In fact, he was one of the first dentists in Ocean County to offer this procedure. “Essentially, we have perfected a revolutionary combination of proven orthodontic techniques, modern materials, and innovative thought which is known as Six Month SmilesTM,” he says. If you or someone you know is not 100% happy with their smile, then this treatment might be for you. Besides being a safe and effective

cosmetic solution, it is also highly affordable and fits most lifestyles. By utilizing specialized clear braces to gently straighten and align teeth, the procedure takes just about six months. He adds, “We have taken the best aspects of braces and modified treatment and the materials to give adults a common-sense solution.” Dr. Balaji also offers Invisalign® for anyone looking for a more comprehensive approach. We offer two different choices based on your needs. Another technique he has become known for is the Fountain of Youth DenturesTM. Besides taking years off your appearance, they can drastically improve your confidence. He adds, “Many traditional dentists use the same fabrication methods they learned in dental school years ago to make dentures, and this results in that “generic” look that most denture wearers exhibit. Because these traditional denture fabrication methods do not take into account modern smile design concepts, they do not consider the collapsed musculature, which is a result of a poor bite relationship.” By using the latest techniques and sophisticated equipment known as ultra low frequency tens unit, Dr. Balaji is able to completely relax your muscles in order to find the correct jaw position and actually give you the appearance of having a face-lift without the surgery. “This method completely contradicts the way all dentists are taught in dental school. It’s time to change old habits and realize there are better ways to achieve the enhancements for denture wearers,” he says. Dr. Balaji is an alumnus of the worldrenowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Training. This allows him to provide services that most traditional offices cannot. His specialized training in adhesive dentistry, smile design, and TMJ/Migraine Therapy gives him the opportunity to provide truly exceptional dental care. “These teeth are the only ones we get so when selecting a dentist, you want to go where its about quality and the highest level of care,” he says. No matter what your age, if you are looking for an exceptional dental experience, visit Aesthetic Dental Creations today. Dr. Balaji and his wife Tracie have two beautiful children, Ava, age fourteen, and Gavin, age eleven. Baseball has always been a passion for Dr. Balaji and when he is not at the office, he enjoys coaching his son’s baseball team and watching his daughter play soccer.

Everyone Is Part Of The Family At Dr. Balaji’s Office For some people, going to the Dentist can be a highly stressful experience. Associated with a quickened heart rate, anxiety, and an impending sense of doom. However, Dr. Balaji Srinivasan and his entire team at Aesthetic Dental Creations are well aware of this and that is why their main goal is making their patients feel at ease. Although they love seeing patients, they know the feelings are not always mutual. However, once you enter their space, you quickly realize this is not your ordinary dental office. Patients quickly become part of their family and with that comes a sense of clam and ease. Whereby you may actually look forward to your next visit! “The first time I walked into Dr. Balaji’s office I received a warm welcome by Tina at the reception desk. She took the time to listen as I explained my apprehension and some of the issues I was having with my teeth. I was assured that Dr Balaji would be able to help me, not only with the pain that I was

experiencing, but also help to improve my smile. When I saw Dr Balaji he took his time and thoroughly examined my teeth. His knowledge of Cosmetic Dentistry was unmatched. Thanks to Dr Balaji and his team, I now have an amazing smile.” - Terri O’Neil “I had a severe overbite and constant issues with my teeth. Dr. Balaji was the only professional who provided me with a permanent solution. I now have perfect teeth and my previous problems have been solved. His knowledge of building the perfect bite is amazing and he handles every step with the utmost care. Thank you Dr. Balaji!” - Steve Vitale “Dr. Balaji and his staff always make their patients feel like family. He tells you exactly what your necessary dental issues are and does not try to sell you something you don’t really need. Because of the many years I have been his patient, my teeth are healthier and whiter than I ever expected they could be.” - Blythe Occipinti

“The Berrie Collection” by Laurie Lombardi It was the summer of 1998 when Emmy Award-winning makeup artist Laurie Lombardi’s signature makeup line took the cosmetics industry by storm, simplifying makeup application for both consumers and professionals. Worn by the star guests on The David Letterman Show and gracing the shelves of Henri Bendel and Cosmetics Plus in New York City, Laurie’s “Korrective Makeup Kit” Laurie Lombardi Natural was a smash success. Skincare & Cosmetics Laurie’s innovative makeup collection took the guesswork out of makeup application, and her progressive philosophy changed the way women made the connection that beauty starts within. As a clinical nutritionist, Laurie’s career has been focused on promoting the relationship between good nutrition and healthy-looking skin. Working in tandem with Eric Sauer, a prominent Compound Pharmacist and an NMD, Laurie’s Skincare and Cosmetic Collection, “Nutrition for the Skin,” has changed the game once more, making the connection between harmful chemicals, hormone disruptors, and how they can affect our body negatively. Twenty-one years later, Laurie Lombardi is back with “The Berries Collection,” a botanical lip stain collection naturally infused with a touch of peppermint essential oils and vanilla, coming in four nourishing and long-lasting shades perfect for every occasion. Lombardi’s Dual Lip Stain and Gloss Berrie Collection are made well, non-toxic, fragranced with vanilla and peppermint oils, naturally good, sheer, but lasting. It’s important to feel good about the products we use, and Laurie Lombardi’s products definitely make you feel good from the outside in.

‘Nutrition For Your Skin’ Laurie takes a unique approach when compounding natural skincare. Innovative ingredients and beauty from the inside out has been Lombardi’s motto since the late ’80s. She developed two skincare lines for two prominent plastic surgeons in NYC and trademarked ArnicaEssence, which retailed at Henri Bendel in NYC. Today Lombardi has expanded her natural skincare line, which are all GMO free, paraben free, never tested on animals, and contain NO toxic chemicals. All of Laurie’s products are formulated with fine botanicals and organic plant-based oils. For more information, call The Natural Pharmacy at 732-695-0277.

Patients Are Treated Like Family at the Office of Dr. Kathy Banks In addition to caring for her patients, Dr. Kathy Banks is highly focused on perfecting her team in the office. Although it did take some time, she has now found the ideal fit. Team members Monica, Danielle, Diana, Amanda, Jessica and Sonya work exceptionally well together and enable her to provide the excellent patient care that she is known for. She adds, “The most important aspect of our team is that we mutually respect and care about one another. Silly interpersonal conflicts and office politics are distractions, and stand in the way of delivering excellent patient care. It takes extra work to achieve and maintain this level of professionalism, but it allows us to keep our focus centered on our patients.”

As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, she has had numerous papers published and is a frequent presenter for continuing education classes. With more than 15 years of experience treating patients of all ages, she is able to treat most of them comfortably in her office. However, when circumstances dictate, Dr. Banks holds hospital privileges in three hospitals: Jersey Shore University Hospital, Southern Ocean Medical Center, and Community Medical Center. She treats patients on an outpatient basis when necessary. Another enhancement to her practice has been starting ongoing education in various areas of expertise. “Before opening this office, I witnessed staff members elsewhere going through the motions of their jobs. I did not want this to be my team. As a life- long learner, I insist on investing in the professional development of all of my team members, including myself. The more knowledge and new skills we are able to master, the more we have to offer our patients. Adding new skills and reinforcing techniques we already practice will enhance our patients’ experience from start to finish,” she says. Dr. Banks’ philosophy is that every patient deserves to be treated like a family member. This often means that team members must stay late, come in early, or adjust their lunch hours to accommodate a patient with a truly serious condition. This is their commitment: to provide excellent, quality care to their patients. When you are a patient of Dr. Banks, quality care begins the moment you call the office, and continues until discharged. She explains, “Staff members Monica, Danielle and Diana guide patients through the registration and scheduling process, and answer the myriad of insurance related questions and concerns. Then, Amanda, Jessica

and Sonya take over with the “hands on “ part of patient care, assisting me with evaluation, taking x-rays and the surgical-anesthetic aspects of care. These three ladies are so compassionate with our patients that they are able to make a surgical appointment pleasant. Their clinical abilities allow me to perform my work at a much higher level,” she adds. New technology plays a big part in the office of Dr. Banks. “Hands down, the number one development in oral and maxillofacial surgery has been integrating 3D imaging into patient care. Cone Beam CT scanning is indispensable in diagnosing common oral conditions such a cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth ” she says. She also uses 3D images for dental implant surgery and can perform virtual surgical implant surgery using either of the two software programs. She explains, “From this work up, a surgical guide can be fabricated and used in the surgery procedure so that the implants are placed in the exact angulation and depth as planned. This is called “guided surgery” and I use this routinely.” Another use for the CBCT scan is jaw reconstruction. “I have used CBCT scans to plan orthognathic surgery procedures where the jaws are cut and repositioned so the teeth match up. The virtual surgery plan done on the computer is used to generate surgical guides that help me perform the jaw surgery with enhanced precision,” she says.

Dr. Kathy Banks received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and received her DMD from Temple University School of Dentistry. After dental school, she completed an Advanced Education General Dentistry program and then completed her 4-year specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She was later awarded her Board Certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Board of Anesthesiology. She is currently the first female Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, and organization dedicated to improving the quality and safety of patient care by advancing innovation in oral and maxillofacial surgery research and education.

5 Reasons You Should Detox Your Body by Vanessa Galati-Drew Feeling exhausted lately? Having skin problems, body aches and pains or digestive issues? Gaining weight or unable to lose any more weight? It may be time for a body detox. In today’s world, we are constantly being exposed to a multitude of toxins everywhere we go—air pollution, food preservatives, carcinogens, medication overload, cleaning products and even chemicals in the water we drink. Added up through time, these toxins can cause major health problems: lack of energy, irritability, craving for sugar, skin irritations, bags under the eyes, and lack of general well-being! 1. Get an Energy Boost By cutting out extra sugar, caffeine, trans fat, and saturated fat and replacing them with fresh fruits and vegetables, you’ll be getting a natural energy boost, one that comes without a resultant crash. An Ionic Foot Detox can give you the boost of energy you’ve been looking for! In just 23 minutes, harmful toxins are pulled out from every cell of your body, right through the reflex points of the feet into soothing warm water. 2. Rid the Body of Any Excess Waste Cleansing the colon with Colon Hydrotherapy is an important part of the detoxing process because those toxins need to exit the body, and a backed-up colon can cause them to be reintroduced into the body, rather than exiting as planned. Sticking with fruits and vegetables even after the detox program is completed is a good way to keep things moving. 3. Helps with Weight Loss The heat from a FIT Bodywrap actually breaks stored fat down and converts it into fatty acids that are used by your muscles for energy. As the FIT Bodywrap heats your body, you begin to sweat to cool down. This sweat is fueled by the energy from the converted fatty acids. You will burn more calories over a 60-minute FIT session than you would by running in a marathon! 4. Stronger Immune System A working lymphatic system balances the body’s fluids, absorbs fat into your system, and helps your body’s immunological defense. It’s important to keep it in tip-top shape! Bio-Electric Lymphatic Drainage improves the entire circulation of the body. By allowing your body to release toxins, accumulated fluid, and proteins between the cells, healthy balance is restored. Essential Oils for Seasonal Allergies About 30 years ago, I started developing allergy symptoms such as sinus pressure, headaches, congestion, sneezing, phlegm and an annoying cough. Also about that time, I had a personal and spiritual awakening about my health and my life. I knew I needed to be more mindful and seek a natural and holistic approach to treating this condition. I started using Essential Oils to treat my sinus and upper respiratory symptoms. I use them religiously and cannot remember the last time I took an over the counter allergy medication. The predictions for the upcoming allergy season sound dreadful! Allergens trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears and sinuses. Therefore, I thought perhaps you might like to try something a little different if you suffer with these symptoms. I diffuse essential oils in my home almost constantly. I switch up my essential oil choices depending on the time of year and the symptoms I have. Here a few tips that might help you too! First, find yourself a moderately priced diffuser with an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier. They hold anywhere from 150 ml – 500 ml of water. Be sure to get one that has a timer and an automatic shutoff. n

Lavender Essential Oil works as a natural antihistamine and possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that will treat and relieve most allergic reactions.

n

Peppermint Essential Oil is strong, fresh and minty and opens clogged sinuses almost immediately. It also has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and decongestant relieving abilities. It opens airways and relieves a scratchy throat.

n

Holy Basil Essential Oil reduces the inflammatory response of allergens, and supports our immune system overall. It has antimicrobial abilities and can remove toxins from our system, as well as clear airways.

n

Eucalyptus Essential Oil opens up the sinus and lungs, therefore improving circulation, which reduces the symptoms of allergies. It works as an expectorant, but also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.

n

Lemon Essential Oil works as a natural antihistamine relieving excess mucous and cools down inflammatory reaction. It also helps with respiratory conditions. Lemon is also known for its anti-bacterial properties. Its best used in a blend with Lavender and Peppermint.

Depending on the capacity of your diffuser, use 2-5 drops of any of these oils mentioned, in whatever combination you like. You could also use 1 drop of each of these oils on a tissue and just directly inhale deeply. Experiment to find the combination that gives you the most relief. As a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist, this affirms for me that this is the best treatment for so many ailments. Here’s hoping that this information brings you some healthier options for relief this allergy season. — By Grace Orosz RN-BC, CCAP

Prostate MRI Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The American Cancer Association predicts there will be 164,690 new cases of prostate cancer in 2018. It is typically diagnosed in men 65 years and older. One out of every 41 men will die of prostate cancer. Despite these ominous statistics, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will not die from this disease. This is due to early diagnosis and treatment. One of the newest tests in diagnosing prostate cancer is the prostate MRI.

Q: What is prostate MRI?

A: The MRI is a machine that uses a powerful magnet instead of

Q: What is the prostate gland?

A: The prostate gland is found in men, located in the pelvis just

below the bladder at the base of the penis. Its function is to excrete fluid which helps make up semen. It is the size of a walnut, but it can grow. As men get older, most prostate glands grow in a condition called benign prostatic hypertrophy. It is not known why this enlargement occurs; however, it is not cancer, nor does it cause cancer.

Q: What is prostate cancer?

A: Prostate cancer occurs when the cells of the prostate gland grow

This subtle prostate cancer is located in an area that is difficult to biopsy. This MRI guided the urologist to the exact location of the cancer so it could be removed with surgery

uncontrollably. Some cases of prostate cancer can grow and spread quickly; however, in a great majority of cases the prostate cancer grows very slowly. In most cases, men will never know they have prostate cancer because it is not causing symptoms or affecting their health. It has been shown that 70% of all men in their eighties who die from other causes will have prostate cancer found incidentally at autopsy.

Q: How do you diagnose prostate cancer?

A: The digital rectal exam is the most commonly used physical exam to diagnose

prostate cancer. The doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to examine the prostate. The doctor can evaluate the texture and size of the gland, and is able to feel for suspicious nodules. There is a blood test called a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test that is used to determine the presence of prostate cancer. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland. It is normally found in the bloodstream in very small quantities. If there are elevated levels of PSA in the blood, this could be a sign of different diseases of the prostate gland, including prostate cancer. If there is a suspicion of prostate cancer, a urologist will perform a biopsy. Usually 12 individual core samples of the prostate gland will be performed in various locations to detect cancer.

radiation to create images of the body. A prostate MRI is able to create excellent images of the prostate gland. It is used to diagnose prostate cancer and to determine whether the cancer is contained within the prostate gland or has spread outside of the prostate gland. It is also able to detect other non-cancerous diseases of the prostate such as prostatitis (infection of the prostate gland), an abscess of the prostate gland, and benign enlargement of the prostate gland called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). Some centers use an endorectal coil. This is an instrument that is inserted into the rectum and is used to help obtain the images of the prostate gland. Our powerful cutting-edge MRI is state of the art and uses the most sophisticated computer system available to create the most detailed images possible. Our MRI does not require the use of an endorectal coil and therefore creates a much more comfortable experience for our patients.

Q: Are there limitation of the prostate MRI?

A: Certain patients have implanted devices such as pacemakers,

spinal stimulators, cochlear implants, and blood vessel stents that are not compatible with an MRI and therefore can pose a danger to the patient. Patients with hip replacements are safe to enter an MRI; however, the metal of the hip replacement can distort the images of the prostate gland. Prostate MRI is a new and exciting test to detect prostate cancer in men. You may wonder why I would be discussing prostate cancer in a newspaper dedicated to women. I have found that in many households, women manage the healthcare for their families. Most questions I am asked about prostate MRI have been from women inquiring for their husbands, fathers, or uncles. Therefore it is important for both men and women to have the information they will need regarding prostate health.

What You Need To Know About Celiac Disease Celiac Disease is a common disorder that affects 1 in 133 people. In this disease, individuals have a reaction to gluten, which is contained in certain food products. This reaction injures the lining of the digestive system and causes a wide variety of symptoms. What are the symptoms of Celiac Disease?

The most common symptoms of Celiac Disease are diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. Some patients may experience weight loss, anemia or other vitamin deficiencies. There may be delayed growth or delayed puberty in children. Other symptoms may include fatigue, bone pain, headaches and muscle aches. Some people with the disease may have no symptoms at all. The disorder is often attributed to Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Fibromyalgia as the symptoms are so varied.

What causes Celiac Disease?

Certain individuals have a genetic susceptibility to Celiac Disease and something then triggers the disease to develop, such as stress or other illness. If you have a parent or sibling with this disorder, you will have a 1 in 20 chance of developing the disease. Celiac Disease may be diagnosed in childhood. Others may not find out about the disease until adulthood due to later onset of the disease or a delay in the diagnosis.

What is gluten and what foods contain it?

Gluten is a mixture of proteins contained in wheat, rye, barley and malt. Due to crosscontamination, oats may also contain gluten if not labeled strictly gluten free. As you might imagine, gluten is therefore in many food staples such as bread, pasta, cakes and pizza.

specific and if positive, almost certainly reflect the underlying disease. Some patients with immune deficiencies may have the disease even with negative blood testing. Genetic testing is also available. Once positive blood tests are identified, your doctor will need to obtain a biopsy of the small intestine to confirm the disorder. A procedure called an upper endoscopy can be scheduled to obtain the necessary tissue. This procedure takes only about five minutes and is performed by a gastroenterologist with the patient asleep with intravenous sedation.

How is Celiac Disease treated?

Celiac Disease is treated with a gluten-free diet. This diet means avoiding all foods that include wheat, barley, rye, malt or oats (unless specified gluten-free oats). All prepared foods are labeled and required to list these ingredients, which makes shopping easier than it had been in the past. Many foods are also clearly marked as gluten free. Foods such as meats, eggs, fruits, vegetables and cheeses are naturally gluten free. There are many glutenfree prepared foods now available in the local supermarket and many restaurants have gluten-free menu options.

Jill Collier, MD, Medical Director, Endoscopy Center of Toms River

Patient Tesimonials: “Procedure went smoothly. Dr. Collier was very informative regarding procedure, as well as communicating results. Felt very comfortable with Dr. Collier and am thankful to have her as my physician for this process.” ~ JoAnn, 65, Forked River “What stood out to me was the patience and kindness that everyone at your facility exhibited. Your front desk staff was knowledgeable and patient on explaining everything and answering questions, and very pleasant. You can tell that everyone likes working there because their happiness comes through. Dr. Jill Collier gave me all the information I needed and made me feel at ease. This was an excellent experience.” ~ Jennifer, 39, Brick

Who helps to manage Celiac Disease?

Once a patient is diagnosed, it is important to meet with a nutritionist to learn about a gluten-free lifestyle. Patients and family members can educate themselves about the disease from numerous books and websites. Local support groups are also available.

Conclusion…

How does gluten affect the bowel in Celiac Disease?

When patients with Celiac Disease eat products containing gluten, an inflammatory reaction started by their body’s own immune system takes place in the digestive system. This reaction causes the surface lining of the small intestine to become damaged. An injured small bowel cannot function properly and absorb the nutrients in food. This causes the patient to develop malabsorption or the inability to process food products.

As you can now understand, Celiac Disease is a common disorder, which may lead to diarrhea and abdominal pain. It is often misdiagnosed as other common illnesses. It can be diagnosed with lab and endoscopic testing. Treatment is available in the form of diet modification. If you think you may have Celiac Disease, contact your gastroenterologist to initiate the proper testing.

How is Celiac Disease diagnosed?

Celiac Disease can be detected with blood testing. Blood tests can show elevated antibody levels in affected patients. The blood tests are very

Why Minimally Invasive Surgery Isn’t Always the Answer High school math teacher Carrie Mazak credits her recovery from a ruptured brain aneurysm to a calculated decision to perform open surgery. It was 5:40 a.m. when Joe Senerchia heard his wife, Carrie Mazak, reciting her ABCs in the guest bedroom of their Ocean Township, New Jersey home. “I had heard that if you think you’re having a stroke, you may not be able to recite the alphabet,” says Carrie. “I could, but it felt like an explosion went off in my head and my right leg was numb.” “I checked in on Carrie and saw her sitting on the floor,” recalls Joe. “When she told me her right leg was numb, I asked if she thought she was having a stroke. She said she just needed a minute. But in less time than that, she was passing out and struggling to breathe, so I called 911.” Within 60 seconds, emergency responders took over and transported Carrie to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where a CAT scan revealed blood on her brain. After administering an angiogram to visualize the blood vessels in her brain, Dr. Pinakin R. Jethwa – a board-certified, dual-trained neurosurgeon at Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists (ANS) – explained to Carrie and her family that she had a ruptured middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysm. “Dr. Jethwa went out of his way to include and educate all of us about Carrie’s options for treatment to stop the bleeding, in a way we could actually understand,” shares Carrie’s sister Sarah Mazak. Brain aneurysms are typically treated with clipping or coiling. Clipping requires a craniotomy to open the skull and place a small clip across the neck of the aneurysm to prevent blood from entering it. Alternatively, endo-vascular coiling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses small coils – inserted through a tiny catheter in the blood stream – to promote clotting and block blood flow from entering the aneurysm.

“We’re incredibly grateful that Dr. Jethwa had the dual training and expertise in both traditional and newer treatments to give us this recommendation,” says Joe. “The outcome for Carrie – and for all of us – has been tremendous.” After the seven-hour surgery, Carrie recovered at the hospital for just over two weeks before returning home. Today, Carrie is neurologically intact, physically healthy and planning to return to teaching high school math.

“Patients like Carrie are the reason I went into neurosurgery,” says Dr. Jethwa. “This aneurysm could have permanently disabled or even killed her, but because she got the right treatment, she is going to live a normal life again. It takes many years of training to become a neurosurgeon, and even more to become a dual-trained neurosurgeon. Seeing Carrie’s recovery makes it all worth it.” ANS is New Jersey’s largest neurosurgical practice and one of the most advanced in the country. For more information, visit www.ansdocs.com.

“Minimally invasive doesn’t necessarily mean minimal risk,” explains Dr. Jethwa. “Because of the size, shape and location of Carrie’s aneurysm, as well as her young age, coiling would have likely presented problems and could have put her at risk for a large stroke or further hemorrhage. Clipping would take a major risk – blood leaking back into the aneurysm or out onto her brain – off the table, decrease the chances of causing a stroke and ultimately lead to a better long-term recovery.”

Getting To Know Your Blood Cells

Ocean Hematology & Oncology Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders

Part II

Leucopenia: When the number of white blood cells (WBCs) in the blood is lower than normal (LEUCOPENIA), it affects the immune function and makes a person more susceptible to infections. There are different types of WBCs in the blood – neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, etc. Neutrophils are important in fighting against bacterial infections. So the number of neutrophils in the blood (absolute neutrophil count: ANC) is more valuable than total white count when assessing the risk of infection. Causes of Leucopenia: Medications: Certain prescription drugs, including

some antibiotics and drugs used for the treatment of seizures, can lower the white cells. If the count is only slightly low, there is no need to change the drug, and close monitoring of the blood count is all that is necessary. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy drugs, given for the treatment of cancer, almost always lower the white count, along with red cells and platelets. This is reversible, and counts should return to normal within two to three weeks. Infections: Viral infections and some bacterial infections can cause leucopenia. Once the infection is resolved, blood counts will return to normal. Autoimmune Diseases: Diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis can cause a suppression of the bone marrow and result in a low white count. Bone Marrow Diseases: Since the blood cells are produced inside the bone marrow, anything that affects the normal function of the marrow can result in a low blood count. This includes leukemia and other cancers, aplastic anemia, and myelodysplasia (MDS). Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS): MDS is a group of diseases where the bone marrow’s function is altered and this results in suppression of one or more cell lines. It is usually a disease of the elderly, but can affect young people as well. Depending on the cell line that is affected, MDS can present with anemia (low red blood cells), leucopenia, thrombocytopenia (low platelets) or a combination of all three. Most cases of MDS progress slowly. In some instances, this can develop into leukemia. Treatment of MDS is based on the degree and severity of the disease. Mild anemia and leucopenia may not require treatment. Injections such as Procrit or Aranesp are used to treat anemia from MDS. Neupogen is a drug that is given as an injection to help stimulate the white cells. If the anemia is severe, blood transfusions might be necessary. More advanced cases of MDS require chemotherapy to lower the number of blood transfusions required and to slow down the progression into leukemia. Younger

patients can be considered for a bone marrow transplant if they have an available donor. Platelets: Platelets are the blood cells that help to prevent bleeding. Normal blood platelet count ranges from 140,000 to 450,000. When the platelet count is low, the risk of bleeding increases. In severe cases, it can result in bruises, nose bleeding, gum bleeding and even bleeding into the internal organs. If the platelet count is really high (thrombocytosis), it can result in blood clots. Thrombocytopenia (low platelets): There are a number of reasons why the blood platelets can be low. Most often, this is very mild and does not cause any bleeding.

Causes: Medications: Certain drugs can lower the platelet

count. This is usually mild and reversible when the drug is discontinued. Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP): ITP is a condition where the bone marrow makes normal platelets but they are destroyed in the blood by an auto-antibody in the blood. The actual cause of this is not well-known. Auto-antibodies are antibodies directed against one’s own cells. When the platelets are destroyed, the bone marrow makes more platelets to compensate. ITP is most often mild and does not require any treatment unless the platelet count is significantly low (<50,000). This disease can cause fluctuations in the platelet count on a day-to-day basis. Bone Marrow Diseases: Leukemia, other cancers involving the bone marrow, aplastic anemia and similar bone marrow disorders can also result in a low platelet count. Treatment: If the platelet count is lower than 10,00015,000, the risk of bleeding is very high and one would need transfusion of platelets. In general, treatment is based on the underlying cause. ITP is treated with drugs such as steroids, gamma globulin and Rituxan. In some cases of ITP, removing the spleen (splenectomy) is one way of improving the platelet count. Thrombocytosis: When the platelet count is higher than normal, it can result in blood clots that clog the blood flow. This can occur in the legs or in any internal organs. Platelets can be transiently increased in infections, inflammations, stress, from smoking and conditions such as iron deficiency anemia. Essential Thrombocytosis: Bone marrow makes abnormal amounts of platelets in this condition and results in extremely high platelet count in the blood. Treatment of thrombocytosis is usually directed towards the cause and towards reducing the risk of getting blood clots. Taking a baby aspirin or regular aspirin a day would lower the risk of blood clots.

Easing the Stress- and Discomfort of Chronic Conditions With Hypnosis & Coaching Anyone who has a chronic condition – whether it’s fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, cancer, IBS, diabetes, COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, MS, etc. – generally has a lot to contend with… managing symptoms, keeping medical appointments, staying on top of treatment options, dealing with lifestyle changes, and sometimes just - making it through each day. Friends and family members may become impatient because you “look okay,” but often can’t do what you once did. Perhaps you frequently decline

Make Your Mind Work FOR You – Instead of Against You! Rhoda Kopy is a nationally certified consulting hypnotist and wellness coach, with specialty certification in complementary medical hypnotism. invitations because you’re tired or uncomfortable. Maybe you’re more irritable and short-tempered. And who wouldn’t feel resentful and upset when their world seems to be changing in significant ways? After all, you didn’t ask for this. Having a long-term health condition is often stressful and can seem to leach the joy out of your life. As stress goes up, pain often increases, and more pain means more isolation and more feeling like a victim. But you can stop that cycle and improve the quality of your life. Being able to adapt is critical. It takes time and effort to accept and learn to cope with a new way of being. But you can positively impact your overall health by taking the best care of yourself possible – and that includes, among other things, learning how to de-stress. Using calming techniques helps strengthen your immune system, boosts your mood, and even helps you become less sensitive to pain. A lot of people benefit by journaling – taking a little time each day to write down thoughts and feelings (the good, the bad, and the ugly!) so they’re not constantly burdened with them. Learning how to place your focus outward, instead of constantly focusing on your problems, is also key. Hypnosis and coaching can ease the stress and

discomfort of chronic health conditions by helping you or an affected loved one to:

Hypnosis For Women ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀

Weight Control Smoking Cessation Relaxation/Comfort Fear Release

• Limit the worry and what-if ’s • Reduce muscle tension and tightness • Interrupt pain patterns • Set and reach realistic goals • Create a more optimistic outlook • Adhere to doctors’ suggestions • Improve self-care • Comfortably handle medical procedures/tests • Live life as fully as possible Hypnosis is not a replacement for licensed medical care, but is often used as an adjunct to help create an overall sense of well-being and encourage clients to follow a healthy lifestyle plan. That’s important because lack of self-care can lead to additional health problems. For example, if you’re lying around the house, not getting in much activity, and eating a lot of junk, you may be setting yourself up for more problems than you already have. Having a chronic condition can be life-changing, but it doesn’t have to be life-destroying. You are capable of appreciating all the good that is in your life, and continuing to learn and grow in ways you might not have imagined.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing: EMDR One of the most revolutionary processes to come along in the field of psychotherapy is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR for short. This process was developed in the early 1980s by Dr. Francine Shapiro, while she was working at the V.A. She discovered that a series of eye movements could help people overcome trauma more quickly and more effectively than ever before. At that time, it was not known how EMDR worked, but more research has been done on EMDR than probably any other psychotherapy. If Dr. Shapiro had not had the wisdom to do a tremendous amount of research to establish its validity, EMDR would probably never have been accepted by the psychological and psychiatric communities. Instead, it is now being used around the world as a treatment for trauma of all kinds, small and large. And its results are stable and long term.

EMDR is very helpful for children and adolescents, as well as adults. A very readable book which clearly demonstrates the use of EMDR with adults is Emotional Healing at Warp Speed by Dr. David Grand, who went on to use EMDR for other purposes, such as cultivating people’s creativity.

.

For more information about this wonderful technique, go to www.sharonflahertyphd.com and click on Recovery from Trauma.

,

To find an EMDR therapist, go to www.EMDR.com. Veterans who are having difficulty with these kinds of problems may call their local Veterans Service Officer, who in Ocean County is at 732-929-2096.

Women’s History

Kate Spade: Fashion Icon to Nieman Marcus in 1999, who later sold the brand to Fifth & Pacific, which was formerly known as Liz Claiborne; however, both Kate and Andy remained active with the promotion of the brand. Kate Spade was known to have taken some time off when daughter Frances Beatrix was born and returned in 2006 with a new brand called Frances Valentine. According to The New York Times, in May the full brand and business was sold to Coach. Kate Spade did not stop at fashion. She utilized her writing skills and wrote three books that included Manners, Occasions and Style. Kate Spade was 55 years old and it has been reported that she suffered from severe depression and anxiety. As a mental health professional, when I hear that someone has taken their life as a result of their inability to cope, it has a significant impact on me. Regardless of a person’s socioeconomic status, mental illness, including depression and anxiety, does not discriminate. I would be remiss if I failed to mention that no matter where we live or which career paths we choose, we could all be affected in one way or another by the daily stressors we encounter. It appears evident that the stigma of mental illness continues to create a barrier for society to It is with a heavy heart that I present this feature to all of seek treatment. In 1991 Kate Spade left the magazine industry to launch a business with her husband, Andy. The “Kate Spade” brand was presented to the city of New York by way of handbags in 1993. The first location was in a small boutique store in SoHo. I recall attending a wedding back in the 1990s with a good friend and she was carrying a bag which she referred to as “her Katy.” I had never heard of Kate Spade at the time; however, my friend was gushing over her new investment and her new friend “Katy.” I was educated about this amazing new designer. At the time I could not afford such a beautiful purchase, and it would not be until years later that I would acquire my first “Katy” bag when I received it as a generous gift from my sister. Kate Spade expanded her retail business as the popularity of her handbags grew. The handbags were known to be shaped in all different sizes, came in beautiful, vibrant colors and provided a modern accessory to mesh with the latest fashion trends. Kate Spade was a monument of fashion in New York and around the world, wearing her signature glasses and wearing her hair in a relaxed, pulled-up style that made us all want to have that look. The Kate Spade brand displays such an eclectic style that makes you feel in touch the latest fashion trend regardless of age. In fact in 1996, Kate Spade was awarded with the “America’s New Fashion Talent in Accessories” award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Kate Spade’s designs were sold in high-end stores ranging from Bloomingdale’s to Saks Fifth Avenue to Nieman Marcus! By 2006 Kate Spade’s retail resume included eyewear, shoes and even paper goods in addition to accessories and handbags. It has been reported in the biography of Kate Spade that she and her husband sold their business

Red Cross: Be Prepared During Hurricane Season The American Red Cross New Jersey Region wants to help keep you and your loved ones prepared and safe. Here are three simple steps you can take to prepare your household for an emergency: 1. Build an emergency kit with a gallon of water per person,

per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, medications, supplies for an infant if applicable, a multi-purpose tool, personal hygiene items, copies of important papers, cell phone chargers, extra cash, blankets, maps of the area and emergency contact information. See the full list and learn more at redcross.org/kit. 2. Talk with household members and create an evacuation plan. Practicing the plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event. 3. Be informed. Learn about the community’s emergency response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for pets.

Stay Safe In and Around the Water This Summer This summer, many New Jersey families will be taking to the water to help beat the heat. Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the leading cause of injury deaths for 1-4 year-old children.

The American Red Cross is stressing the importance of constant, active adult supervision and ensuring that everyone learns to swim as critical layers of protection to help prevent drowning. The following tips are layers of protection that will help people stay safe in, on and around the water: • Do your part, be water smart! Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well.

• Adults: actively supervise children; stay within arm’s reach

Download Free Red Cross Emergency App For tips on what to do before, during and after severe weather such as hurricanes, download the Red Cross Emergency App. It offers emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of flooding, as well as locations of open Red Cross shelters.

Users can find it in smartphone app stores by searching for the American Red Cross, texting GETEMERGENCY to 90999 for a link to download the app or going to redcross.org/apps.

of young children and newer swimmers. And kids: follow the rules. • Don’t fool with a pool: fence it in. Enclose your pool and spa with four-sided, four-foot fencing and use self-closing, selflatching gates. • Don’t just pack it; wear your U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket – always when on a boat and if in a situation beyond your skill level. Inflatable children’s toys and water wings can be fun, but they are no substitute for a life jacket and adult supervision. • Swim as a pair near a lifeguard’s chair - everyone, including experienced swimmers, should swim with a buddy in areas protected by lifeguards. • Reach or throw, don’t go! Know what to do to help someone in trouble, without endangering yourself; know how and when to call 9-1-1; and know CPR.
