A BREAKTHROUGH IN NEUROPATHY CARE! Do You Suffer From Peripheral Neuropathy? Peripheral Neuropathy is a nerve disorder known to affect millions of people throughout the U.S. It is a complication found in several different medical conditions including Diabetes, Peripheral Vascular Disease, Post Chemo-Radiation therapies and Metabolic disorders being some of the most common. Underlying the above disease processes is the problem of impaired circulation to peripheral blood vessels, particularly the smaller ones (capillaries). Without sufficient blood flow to nerve tissues, oxygen and nutrients cannot get into the tissues and the waste products of metabolism cannot get out. When functioning normally, nerve tissues receive nutrient rich, highly-oxygenated blood carried to them by capillaries, however they are easily clogged by this debilitating process. The peripheral nervous system eventually becomes distressed and damaged due to starvation and toxicity. In advanced cases of diabetic neuropathy, blood glucose can also damage the walls of these tiny blood vessels supplying nerves, especially those in the legs and feet.

What Is MicroVas? MicroVas is a FDA cleared, non-invasive vascular treatment system that delivers electromagnetic energy to targeted areas of the body. After years of research, this technology was originally developed to treat Navy SEAL divers for hypothermia. It has since been engineered as a ground-breaking innovation with the ability to address the root cause of neuropathy, often a lack of nerve fiber circulation in the injured area. MicroVas’ powerful, deeply penetrating waveform causes blood to pump and circulate much more efficiently by significantly raising tissue oxygen levels, resulting in a potent effect on the microcirculation. Studies have demonstrated marked increases in tissue oxygen supply within minutes of initiating treatment. In contrast to other technologies available, this process even results in new capillary formation, laying the groundwork for new tissue growth and repair while accelerating the healing process. MicroVas also accelerates lymphatic drainage as much as ten to thirty-fold, notably reducing swelling and stimulating the body’s immune response. Its therapeutic effects are often dramatic, long-lasting and our unique approach of implementation is designed to help you achieve optimal results for long-term relief.

“My oncologist highly recommended a MicroVas program being offered at a premier area hospital to treat my neuropathy. Fortunately, I found it available closer to home at Rehability. The MicroVas combined with all the manual treatments on my legs and feet by the wonderful therapists’ have helped me make a remarkable recovery” - Sal D.

“We personally invite you to schedule a comprehensive evaluation to determine if you are a MicroVas candidate and to learn more about our One-of-a-Kind Neuropathy Program we are EXCITED to now offer our patients!” -The REHABILITY Team *Most major medical insurances accedpted, including Medicare.

Inspiring Women To Become Financially Independent We recently asked several of our top women financial professionals to share thoughts to help women in their financial planning journey. Here’s what they had to share: 1. Give your voice to your financial plan. “Women need to take charge of their own financial destinies by becoming decision makers in the household. It does not matter if you are a CEO or a stay-at-home mom. The decisions impacting you and your family’s financial future need your voice. Women often outlive men, and this means they need to know what their long-term plans will be involving their finances.” – Camille Tan, Strategic Financial Group, Inc., Naperville, IL

2. You are capable of learning and managing your finances. Debra Serafin, MBA As Director of Financial Educational Services at Innovative Wealth Partners, LLC., my passion for teaching has not stopped upon retiring from public education, but has been transformed into educating clients about financial independence. Open communication, sincerity and the personal touch is our signature approach provided to all our clients.

“Realize that you’re capable of managing your finances and managing them well. I didn’t have a background in finance and would write myself off as ‘just not good at it.’ But with some studying and research, I have realized that we don’t always give ourselves enough credit. Go to the finance section of a bookstore and familiarize yourself with the concepts and terms of basic financial planning. Then, find an adviser whom you trust and can explain to you exactly what he or she is doing with your money.” – Beth Chandler, Chandler Advisors, Little Rock, AR, Baton Rouge, LA and Nashville, TN

3. Get interested in what your financial professional is planning for you. Ask questions! “A common response I get when asking other women about their financial planning is: ‘I don’t know what he/she is doing, but my adviser is taking care of me.’ We can do better than that! Know what your game plan is financially so you don’t have to worry, should hard times arise. Most advisers enjoy clients who are interested in what they’re doing.”– Beth Chandler, Chandler Advisors, – Little Rock, AR, Baton Rouge, LA and Nashville, TN

4. Don’t postpone planning thinking you will be married one day. “Many single women under age 40 consider themselves happy and comfortable. It is important to realize that putting off financial planning, is not good planning. Even savers may have a hard time separating themselves from their funds. There are methods for using life insurance to set aside funds for themselves that may be attractive. Life insurance can do more than just provide a death benefit.” – Lynette A. Lalanne, Streettalk Insurance, Houston, TX

5. You play a vital role in the support and success of your family. “All too often, I have found that the overall female contribution to the family is largely undervalued. Whether it is a financial contribution or family contribution, women play a vital role in the support and success of their families. I regularly see women who have half the protection coverage of their male counterparts, but the value she brings to the family is just as high.” –Camille Tan, Strategic Financial Group, Inc., Naperville, IL

Note

The Monmouth County Woman Publication! The snow has melted, the birds are chirping and the days are longer. Spring is finally upon us, and after a long, long winter, we couldn’t be happier. On April 6th, our office staff welcomed back the Canada geese couple. As in past years, they immediately started building their nest in the patch of long grass next to the parking lot mailboxes. Each year, we love watching “Mom” patiently sitting on her eggs waiting for the hatching of her goslings. Last year we were fortunate enough to see all six of her goslings on the day they were born! Speaking of “Mom,” on May 14th we celebrate and honor our mothers.. Then, on June 18th, we celebrate Father’s Day, a day to observe the contribution fathers and father figures make towards their children’s lives. If you are lucky enough to have one or both parents, remember to tell them how special they are to you! On May 29th, we celebrate Memorial Day, a day to honor all of the men and women who have died in service to their country. Many towns will pay tribute to the fallen with parades, decorating with flags, and people wearing a bright red poppy on the left side of their chest. Memorial Day also marks the unofficial beginning of summer. As the weather heats up and all the beach communities come alive with activities, we want to wish you a safe and fun summer. Take advantage of everything the Jersey Shore has to offer, including the many wonderful events you can read about in the Community section of this publication. In addition, don’t forget to visit our Facebook page, where you can enter to win tickets to see an amazing show. Best, Lauren Shover and the Staff at the Monmouth County Woman Publication

Healthy Eating Leads To Healthy Smiles! If you want healthy and goodlooking teeth as an adult, it is important to take care of them during childhood. Diet is directly linked to the strength and beauty of teeth- malnutrition is the number one cause for weak teeth and junk food is the biggest culprit when it comes to tooth decay. Vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients keep crowns safe from damage and they strengthen them so that your child can enjoy sweets without worry. Naturally, fruits and vegetables are the most important source of nutrients.

Vitamin C is a critical component of dental health. It helps to boost resistance to cavities, and it has the added benefit of strengthening gums. Oranges, kiwis, and strawberries are great sources of Vitamin C and they prevent harmful bacteria from colonizing and contributing to gingivitis. Dairy products are also essential in the fight against tooth decay. Rich in calcium and Vitamin D, milk should be a daily routine for your children. Encourage them to snack on low-sugar yogurt and cheese, because these dairy products raise the pH levels in the mouth (which helps prevent decay) and they reduce the effect of the acids produced by dental plaque.

What our happy patients are saying… “It’s a wonderful feeling when we come to the office. My little boys love you guys and their happiness is what matters. Keep doing what you guys are doing, being wonderful and loving.” - Noah Michaels

Other powerful ingredients are seeds. Try to include seeds like pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds into your kid’s packed lunch- they go perfectly with sandwiches and burgers. Seeds are naturally high in fat content, which is very important for the body; they reinforce the enamel and reduce the chance of cavities. Crunchy vegetables like cauliflower, green beans, carrots, and cabbage are not only delicious and readily available in your local grocery store, but they also provide a unique way of helping teeth through the necessity of extended chewing. The chewing process acts as a tooth cleaner, scrubbing the teeth and removing plaque that gathers after meals. Believe it or not, it is also important to encourage your child to have a piece of sugar-free chewing gum daily. Chewing gum for fifteen minutes after meals

is very efficient in polishing the tooth surface and removing food debris from the crevices. It also increases saliva production, which acts as an anti-bacterial agent. All of these foods will benefit your child’s teeth, but it is also important to avoid the problematic foods that can get stuck between teeth and cause cavities. As a parent, it is important to regulate the amount of sweets and sticky candies that your child consumes. Foods like caramel, taffy, hard candy, and soda can cause major destruction in your child’s mouth. If your child cannot resist sticky sweet temptation, it is a good idea to have some sugar-free gum handy to help protect against the harmful effects of these foods. Last but not the least, maintain the habit of seeing a dentist twice a year and brushing at least twice a day. Regular brushing is the most essential part in maintaining healthy teeth both in childhood and adulthood!

Alzheimer’s Disease and Physical Therapy What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

- Strength and Flexibility

A

lzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting one in eight Americans over the age of 65. Dementia is a general term for a variety of conditions that develop as a result of malfunctioning nerve cells in the brain. Research has shown that individuals with Alzheimer’s disease tend to develop abnormal structures in the brain, called plaques and tangles, that block communication between nerve cells in the brain and body. Plaques build up in the spaces in between nerve cells, and consist of a protein called beta-amyloid. Tangles are described as a collection of twisted fibers made from a different protein, called tau, that develop inside nerve cells rather than in between them. Because the nerve cells are unable to work properly, individuals can experience a variety of cognitive, behavioral, and physical symptoms. Alzheimer’s disease is progressive, meaning that is worsens over time, and although there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, medication and physical activity can be helpful in slowing its progression.

What are the signs and symptoms?

The most common symptom of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease is difficulty remembering newly learned information. As we age, it is common to experience occasional memory loss or slowed thinking; however, serious memory difficulties and confusion are signs that the brain is not working exactly as it should. As the disease progresses, individuals tend to experience mood and behavior changes, increased confusion about time and place, disorientation, and difficulty responding to the demands in their environment. Physical symptoms accompany cognitive changes, particularly muscle disuse, difficulty walking, negotiating turns and obstacles, and loss of balance.

How can physical therapy help?

The physical symptoms mentioned above ultimately increase an individual’s risk of falling, which can possibly lead to serious injury. Research has shown the importance of physical activity for overall well-being. During a physical therapy evaluation, a licensed physical therapist evaluates various components of the body in order to determine impairments that may be contributing to a patient’s symptoms. All-Care’s Jackson location is located From there, an individualized exercise program at 355 North Countyline Road in the is created to meet the specific needs of each Cooks Landing Plaza. patient. A supervised exercise program, with the goal of increasing muscle strength and improving balance, will ultimately lead to improved safety awareness and decrease a patient’s fall risk. The following are important aspects that are addressed in each exercise program, as deemed appropriate by a physical therapist:

Elise Paolantonio, DPT. graduated from the University of Delaware in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Disabilities Studies. She continued her education at the University of Delaware where she earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree in January 2014. Elise has clinical experience in a variety of settings, including inpatient rehabilitation, acute care, outpatient orthopedics, and pediatric rehabilitation. Her professional areas of interest include post-operative rehab, orthopedics, amputation, and neurological rehabilitation of the pediatric and geriatric populations. The County Woman Magazine

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, individuals tend to become more sedentary, which leads to muscles becoming weak and tight. This is predominantly true for the muscles of the hips and legs. The lower extremity muscles are very important for standing and walking, so as they become weak, it becomes particularly difficult to perform daily tasks and ambulate, or walk around. Physical therapy can help break this cycle by developing a safe strengthening and flexibility program to improve muscle performance. As an individual’s strength starts to improve, exercises may be altered or advanced to further maximize strength gains.

- Gait Training

In addition to developing an exercise program, a physical therapist will evaluate and determine the most appropriate assistive device for each patient in order to provide safe ambulation. The most common assistive devices are rolling walkers, single point canes, and quad canes. The physical therapist will educate and train the patient on how to correctly use his/her assistive device during ambulation. If unsafe ambulation is identified during the initial evaluation, subsequent treatment sessions will consist of gait training, in order to maximize safety awareness. As quality of gait improves, the patient will be challenged to negotiate obstacles and ambulate on various surfaces, in order to simulate real life situations. Continued practice will eventually lead to improved safety awareness during community ambulation and while performing daily tasks.

- Balance

Along with safe ambulation, balance is by far one of the most important aspects of minimizing an individual’s fall risk. Balance can be divided into two components: static and dynamic. Static balance refers to an individual’s ability to maintain balance while in a still position, whether that be while seated or standing. Dynamic balance refers to maintaining balance while moving. Both static and dynamic balance are addressed during physical therapy by simulating tasks that individual’s experience in their daily lives. These tasks include reaching, stepping onto and off of various pliable surfaces, and negotiating obstacles while walking. This is a great opportunity to not only challenge balance, but also memory, as the patient will need to follow directions and remember multi-step commands. By challenging balance in various ways, the body is better able to adapt and learn how to respond safely and appropriately during real life situations.

What happens after you finish physical therapy?

All of the factors addressed during physical therapy work together to improve overall function and safety. Once an individual has achieved his/her goals and is ready to be discharged, the physical therapist will provide the patient with a home exercise program so that the gains made during physical therapy can be maintained. Physical therapy can provide the tools for success, however it is up to the individual to use the information he/she has learned to continue to maximize safety and functional mobility!

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the squamous cells, which compose most of the skin’s upper layers (the epidermis). SCCs often look like scaly red patches, open sores, elevated growths with a central depression, or warts; they may crust or bleed. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of squamous cell carcinoma are diagnosed each year in the U.S., and (depending on different estimates) as many as 8,800 people die from the disease. Incidence of the disease has increased up to 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S. SCC is mainly caused by cumulative ultraviolet (UV) exposure over the course of a lifetime; intense exposure in the summer months, as well as the UV produced by tanning beds, all add to the damage that can lead to SCC. Having a fair complexion also puts you at risk of SCC. SCCs may occur on all areas of the body including the mucous membranes and genitals, but are most common in areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the rim of the ear, lower lip, face, balding scalp, neck, hands, arms and legs. Often the skin in these areas reveals telltale signs of sun damage, including wrinkles, pigment changes, freckles, “age spots,” loss of elasticity, and broken blood vessels. Often SCC is mistaken for rash.

A persistent, scaly red patch with irregular borders that sometimes crusts or bleeds. Squamous cell carcinomas detected at an early stage and removed promptly are almost always curable and cause minimal damage. However, left untreated, they eventually penetrate the underlying tissues and can become disfiguring. A small percentage even metastasize to local lymph nodes, distant tissues, and organs and can become fatal. Therefore, any suspicious growth should be reported to a dermatologist without delay. Anyone who has had precancerous spots called actinic keratosis (AKs) or one squamous cell tumor has an increased chance of developing another, especially in the same skin area or nearby. That is usually because the skin has already suffered irreversible sun damage. Such recurrences typically occur within the first two years after surgery. A squamous cell carcinoma can recur even when it has been carefully removed the first time. That is why you need to be under close lifelong surveillance of your dermatologist.

To avoid or prevent SCC, make these sun safety habits part of your daily health care routine: • • • • • • •

Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. Do not burn. Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Wear a hat that covers your ears. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30-50 every day. Apply sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Report any rash that does not go away in a month or two to your dermatologist. Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. See your dermatologist at least once a year for a routine full skin check exam.

Summer Is Coming - Hydrate Your Skin Today

Shed your winter facial coat and hydrate naturally with Laurie Lombardi’s natural Rx grade skincare line.

• Hyaluronic Acid: When HA is applied to the skin, it forms an air-permeable layer and penetrates to the dermis, thus boosting elasticity and hydration to the skin; this protective barrier on the skin locks in moisture, which gives the skin a youthful appearance. • Caffeine: Applied topically, caffeine improves circulation and plumps up the skin, diminishing the appearance of dark circles. It also has the ability to reduce puffiness since it helps constrict vessels to reduce swelling. All of these wonderful ingredients are whipped and blended into four essential oils, and a rich fatty acid base for deeper penetration. “I chose geranium, rosemary, cypress, and myrrh essential oils for their healing properties and wonderfully aromatic fragrance.” – DMAE in a liquid water gel base: DMAE performs two different roles in the body. It both produces the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain and acts as an antioxidant cell membrane stabilizer. Topical DMAE aids in tightening the muscles that keep your skin looking healthy and diminish lines and sagging skin. Our DMAE is infused with lemongrass essential oil. Lemongrass is known for its antimicrobial, antiseptic and bactericidal properties. – Organic Face & Eye Serum: This serum is packed with high-quality therapeutic oils as well as essential oils. The combination of green tea oil, vitamin E oil, evening primrose oil, rose hip oil, and fractionated coconut oil all work synergistically to nourish and promote glowing skin from the inside out.

Laurie Lombardi, CDN, Para Medical Skincare Specialist, formulates and compounds skincare on the premises. It’s best to start with Laurie’s signature Dermaplaning. Dermaplaning was once an aesthetic trade secret in the modeling & acting industry. Dermaplaning removes all dead skin cells and also facial hair (which does NOT grow back thicker), leaving the skin surface smooth, more vibrant and youthful. The good news is there’s “NO downtime.” Once this procedure is done, skincare products have greater penetration since it safely removes the top barrier of dead skin cells. Laurie compounds natural skincare on the premise. She doesn’t use any hormones, perfumes, GMOs’ or soy. “I like to refer to my skincare as ‘nutrition for your skin.’” Laurie’s products include: - Organic Oatmeal & Lecithin Scrub, a very gentle scrub with ground oats and lecithin. - Vitamin C (20% ascorbic acid), made the old apothecary way, with a mortar and pestle. The ascorbic acid is first crushed; vitamin E, jojoba oil, essential oils and castor oil are blended into a rich lipo-base for deeper penetration. Vitamin C increases collagen production, reduces wrinkles, brightens the skin tone and helps repair skin. - Eye Care Treatment: The first three ingredients are very effective for reducing fine lines and puffiness around the eye area. • Agireline is made up of peptides, which are chains of amino acids that can affect how cells in the body work. When argireline is applied around the eyes, the chemical composition of the peptides causes facial muscles to contract with less force.

Do I Need a Special Education Attorney? Written by Colleen L. Clark, Esq. As the parent of a child with disabilities, how can you be sure that your child is receiving appropriate accommodations? We can help. At The Matus Law Group, we help our clients: • Prepare for IEP eligibility meetings • Assist in drafting your child’s IEP • Attend IEP meetings • Review your child’s evaluations and IEP forms before you sign them • Assist in resolving matters with your school district • Request mediation or a resolution session • Prepare a complaint for a due process hearing when disputes cannot be resolved informally Special education is a complex and sometimes confusing area of the law governed by federal statute as well as state laws. The basis for most special education law comes from the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Family Educational and Privacy Rights Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Children with disabilities are guaranteed four basic rights under IDEA 2004: • Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) • Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

• •

Supplementary Aids and Services Assessment These rights are given to children under IDEA through their Individualized Education Program (IEP). This IEP must be reviewed and updated at least annually and include goals that are comprehensive, specific and measurable. Section 504 guarantees that a child with a disability has equal access to education as a child without a disability. A student with disabilities may qualify for a 504 plan if the disability substantially

limits his or her educational performance. A 504 plan should include modifications or accommodations to put the child on an equal playing field as his peers. It should also name the person responsible for ensuring those modifications and accommodations are implemented. Your child’s IEP or 504 Plan is a roadmap to his or her education. If you have concerns that this roadmap is not appropriate or is not being followed by the school district, it may be time to contact a special education attorney.

Sacroiliitis/Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction The sacrum is located in the lower portion of the spine and lies between the lumbar and coccyx. The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is located on either side between the sacrum and ilium of the pelvis. The left and right joints are held together by strong ligaments, which contributes to its stability. There is minimal movement to the SIJ. Tt functions as a shock absorber for the spine and aids with weight transfer to either extremity during ambulation. The ligaments of the sacroiliac joint loosen during pregnancy due to circulating hormones to allow for pelvic widening during the birthing process. When there is inflammation of the SIJ, it is termed sacroiliitis and can be unilateral or bilateral. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is a result of abnormal motion in the sacroiliac joint. SIJ dysfunction can result in sacroiliitis but is not the sole etiology. Sacroiliitis can occur as a component of inflammatory conditions of the spine, which are termed spondyloarthropathies. Spondyloarthropathies are inclusive of but not limited to ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. Sacroiliitis may also occur due to osteoarthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, trauma, childbirth, or infection of the joint. Signs and symptoms of sacroiliitis include mild to moderate ache in the lower back or buttock pain on either side. Stiffness can occur especially with prolonged sitting or walking. Discomfort can worsen when standing from a seated position or a knee-to-chest

position. Pain can be referred to the hip, groin, and occasionally down the leg above the knee if the pain is severe. If there is numbness, weakness, or decreased reflexes in the lower extremities, then more proximal issues involving the lumbar nerves should be investigated. There is no single reliable test in the diagnosis of SIJ dysfunction but provocative maneuvers that reproduce the symptoms are suspicious for sacroiliac joint issues. The gold standard of diagnosis of SIJ dysfunction resulting from the SIJ itself is by performing an X-ray–guided SIJ injection with a local anesthetic. The diagnosis is confirmed if there is significant relief of the pain and function from the injection. Imaging with lumbosacral X-rays to rule out bony pathology is beneficial. CT scan and MRI are also beneficial in examining the lumbosacral spine to rule out other pathology that may involve the discs, bone, and nerves. Treatment is determined by the type and severity of symptoms, and the underlying cause of the sacroiliitis. Nonsurgical treatment includes rest, change of position, heat/ice, or medication (NSAIDs). Other conservative care is inclusive of physical therapy, chiropractic therapy, or osteopathic manual manipulation to help restore range of motion. Fluoroscopically guided SIJ injections with steroids aid in decreasing inflammation and pain. For severe intractable pain not responsive to nonsurgical treatments that interferes with daily functioning, surgery (sacroiliac joint fusion) is designed to fuse the SIJ to stop the motion in the joint.

There’s Help For Skin Cancer The good news is that skin cancer is almost 100 percent curable if found early and treated promptly! What is skin cancer?

Cancer is a disease in which cells become abnormal and form more cells in an uncontrolled way. With skin cancer, the cancer begins in cells that make up the skin. The skin is the body’s largest organ. It protects us against heat, light, injury, and infection. It regulates body temperature and stores water, fat, and vitamin D. With skin cancer, new cells form when the skin does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells form a mass of tissue called tumors. Not all tumors are cancer! Tumors that are cancer can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs, and sometimes can spread to other parts of the body. Skin cancers are named for the types of cells where the cancer starts. At the Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology, we are committed to making your cancer treatment a comfortable and successful experience. We offer individualized High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy for skin cancer, which minimizes the amount of radiation and side effects on nearby healthy tissues.

What is Skin HDR Brachytherapy?

Skin HDR (high dose rate) Brachytherapy is a radiotherapy technique, which is performed for certain types of basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers. It is a non-invasive curative treatment for skin cancers, which allows direct placement of the radiation over the lesion and provides maximize treatment results with little to no effects on the surrounding areas. It provides an effective alternative treatment with minimal side effects for selected patients and those who cannot be treated surgically.

I nstItute F or A dvAnced r AdIAtIon o ncology We Specialize In:

• Gamma Knife Radiosurgery • Tomotherapy • Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) • Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery • Intensity Modulated Radiation

Squamous cancer nose

Three months after HDR radiation

What is the treatment time?

HDR Brachytherpy is typically delivered in 3-5 minutes sessions over the course of six visits over a two week period of time. Skin cancer is effectively eliminated over 90 percent of the time. The treatment is completely painless.

• Radioactive Seed Implantation (Brachytherapy)

732-923-6890

Benefit of HDR Brachytherapy on skin cancer

With this technique, a skin cancer is eliminated without surgery and therefore, without the potential disfiguring effects of removing lesions along the face, ears, and other areas where cosmetic appearance is important to you. The reduction in normal tissue injury means more rapid and complete functional recovery. HDR provides shorter overall treatment times than external therapy beam radiation. Each fraction (session) of treatment can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Don’t Let Neck Pain and Picking the Right Doctor Be a Pain in the Neck Not sure who should treat your neck pain? If you suffer from neck pain, knowing who should treat it is critical to your quality of life.

WE’RE HERE

Life’s simple pleasures are not so simple when you suffer from neck or back pain. At Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists (ANS), we make them

easier for you to enjoy.

The neck – or “cervical spine”– houses the spinal cord, which sends messages from the brain to all parts of the body. Whether you have a stiff neck or numbness and tingling that radiate down Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists’ Dr. Pinakin to your fingers, neck pain can Jethwa, a nationally renowned neurosurgeon and signal an underlying medical one of only a few in the country that is dual-trained, issue, especially if it persists. reviews a patient’s films. Some cervical spine issues can lead to problems with walking, balance and coordination – even loss of bladder or bowel control – so it’s best to see a doctor sooner than later to avoid larger problems down the road.

What kind of doctor should you see? There are two types of doctors that treat neck pain: neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons. Neurosurgeons diagnose and treat disorders affecting the nervous system – the command, control and communication network in the body that’s made up of the brain, spine and neurovascular system. Orthopedic surgeons specialize in the musculoskeletal system. Both can specialize in spine surgery; however, orthopedic surgeons don’t deal with the neurovascular system. They often call in neurosurgeons when they encounter complications in surgery. Ask these questions to find the best doctor to treat your specific issue: n

What kinds of minimally invasive procedures do you offer?

n

How many neck surgeries have you performed?

n

What is the range of cervical care you provide?

n

Sometimes Good People Find Themselves In The Criminal Justice System-Use An Expungement To Help You

A

s we stand here in 2017, finances become ever so important in an extremely competitive job market. We are in a technologically advanced society where people can learn about you and your background with the stroke of a computer key. Depending on the agency that is conducting the criminal background check, whether private or public, a wealth of information about you can be yielded. Having a conviction in New Jersey for a crime, offense or otherwise can possibly jeopardize securing a job if you have been involved with the state criminal justice system. Not only can a conviction affect your ability to secure a livelihood, it may need to be disclosed and can affect college applications, graduate school applications, professional licensing requirements, relationships, court proceedings, military entrance, certain jobs requiring a background clearance, housing and insurance. The law regarding expungements is highly technical and therefore you need an experienced criminal attorney to obtain an expungement. An expungement is legally defined as “the extraction and isolation of all records on file within any court, detention or correctional facility, law enforcement or criminal justice agency concerning a person’s detection, apprehension, arrest, detention, trial or disposition of an offense within the criminal justice system.” N.J.S. 2C:52-1a. Expungements apply to juveniles and adults. Our legislature has recognized the role of an expungement. Life experiences and observation suggest that a multitude of reasons exist why a person has landed in the criminal justice system – marital issues, health problems, mental health issues, drug dependency, financial failure, death of loved ones or simply a product of circumstance. Recognizing these unfortunate yet real problems, New Jersey criminal law states in pertinent part that regarding expungements “the primary objective of providing relief to the reformed offender who has led a life of rectitude and disassociated himself with unlawful activity.” N.J.S. 2C:52-32. Not all crimes and offenses are subject to an expungement. For example, motor vehicle offenses for which a person was arrested or convicted are generally not subject to an expungement. See N.J.S. 2C:52-28. A person seeking an expungement application should know that New Jersey requires certain time passage before one is even eligible to apply. In some cases, depending on the facts and circumstances of the individual, it may be a waiting period of ten (10) years, five (5) years, three (3) years, six (6) months or immediately.

Particularly significant are expungements applications that can be filed immediately. The Governor signed a fairly new law to be effective April 18, 2016. See N.J.S. 2C:52-6a et seq. However, many experienced attorneys and persons involved in the state criminal justice system are not aware of it and how it can help their clients. This new law allows for an expungement application to be filed immediately if a person’s charges were dismissed or resulted in an acquittal, with certain exceptions. To illustrate, we recently helped an individual in Essex County. We were successfully able to get his indictable charge downgraded to a simple assault. Thereafter, we got the simple assault charge dismissed. I prepared all of the necessary paperwork and provided it to the judge to transfer over for expungement purposes. There was no waiting period and this process helps clients who are looking for immediate filing and an expeditious expungement of same. The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) has provided a criminal directive and legal form to be utilized in these instances. The law on expungements, like many laws, can and often does change from moment to moment. Likewise, the judicial interpretations dictate the roadmap in this technical area. Depending on what you were convicted of, the time frame, what your criminal records are before and after, and a list of other crucial factors determines if you will be afforded an opportunity for a clean slate. When it comes to your life and your livelihood, you need an experienced attorney who will tend to your best interests. Famous novelist Marcel Proust sums it up – “There is no man … however wise, who has not at some period in his youth said things, or lived a life, the memory of which is so unpleasant to him that he would gladly expunge it.”

Smiles Come Easy at Aesthetic Dental Creations fter a visit with Dr. Balaji Srinivasan, otherwise known as Dr. Balaji, and his team at Aesthetic Dental Creations you quickly realize that this is not your typical dentist’s office. They are all about creating relationships along with your dental health. He adds, “We provide our patients with the highest standard of care and service. When coming up with goals for my practice, the main priority was to treat our patients the way I would like to be treated. That would mean he would know me personally, and I would not feel like a number when visiting their office.” Dr. Balaji is a stickler for quality care and not having his patients wait. You will never see a waiting room full of people. “I don’t expect my patients to wait. I respect their time and providing quality dental care is my priority. Quality over quantity every single time.” Besides having the latest in advanced technology and cutting edge procedures, Dr. Balaji and his staff take the time to educate their patients about their oral health. In addition to general dentistry, Dr. Balaji and his talented team perform root canals, veneers, periodontal therapy, deep bleaching, TMJ treatment, and allporcelain crowns.

denture wearers exhibit. Because these traditional denture fabrication methods do not take into account modern smile design concepts, they do not consider the collapsed musculature, which is a result of a poor bite relationship.” By using the latest techniques and sophisticated equipment known as ultra low frequency tens unit, Dr. Balaji is able to completely relax your muscles in order to find the correct jaw position and actually give you the appearance of having a face-lift without the surgery. “This method completely contradicts the way all dentists are taught in dental school. It’s time to change old habits and realize there are better ways to achieve the enhancements for denture wearers,” he says.

Your first visit to their office is the most critical and thorough one. He says, “Our new client examination is like one you have never experienced before. Be prepared to have the most thorough and detailed comprehensive exam. From our digital radiographs which have one tenth the radiation exposure as traditional x-rays, to our digital photography, you will be able to see the condition of your dental health in high definition.” Also part of this exam is a head/neck exam, oral cancer screening, and periodontal evaluation. Once he compiles all of the results, Dr. Balaji comes up with recommendations on how to treat your dental, as well as your overall health. A treatment that Dr. Balaji is known for his “Six Month SmilesTM.” In fact, he was one of the first dentists in Ocean County to offer this procedure. “Essentially, we have perfected a revolutionary combination of proven orthodontic techniques, modern materials, and innovative thought which is known as Six Month SmilesTM,” he says. If you or someone you know is not 100% happy with their smile, then this treatment might be for you. Besides being a safe and effective cosmetic solution, it is also highly affordable and fits most lifestyles. By utilizing specialized clear braces to gently straighten and align teeth, the procedure takes just about six months. He adds, “We have taken the best aspects of braces and modified treatment and the materials to give adults a common-sense solution.”

Dr. Balaji is an alumnus of the worldrenowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Training. This allows him to provide services that most traditional offices cannot. His specialized training in adhesive dentistry, smile design, and TMJ/Migraine Therapy gives him the opportunity to provide truly exceptional dental care. Dr. Balaji and his wife Tracie have two beautiful children, Ava, age thirteen, and Gavin, age ten. Baseball has always been a passion for Dr. Balaji and when he is not at the office, he enjoys coaching his son’s baseball teams. “These teeth are the only ones we get so when selecting a dentist, you want to go where its about quality and the highest level of care,” he says. No matter what your age, if you are looking for an exceptional dental experience, visit Aesthetic Dental Creations today.

Another technique he has become known for is the Fountain of Youth DenturesTM. Besides taking years off your appearance, they can drastically improve your confidence. He adds, “Many traditional dentists use the same fabrication methods they learned in dental school years ago to make dentures, and this results in that “generic” look that most The County Woman Magazine

How Do I Keep My Teeth Straight? Many of us realize that even though our teeth were straight at one point, things start shifting. Why Do Teeth Move? Just because the teeth are straight naturally or with braces it does not mean they will stay straight like that. Unfortunately, with age things move. Also, teeth have memory, after orthodontic treatment is completed, if the teeth are not retained in that position they want to move back to their initial position. Fortunately, the relapse is usually not great but if there was a tooth that was really rotated that tooth will be more likely to move. So How Do You Keep Your Teeth Straight “Forever”? To keep the the straight, ideally, retainers have to be worn full time the first year and at night after that. This protocol will minimize relapse. Some settling is expected.

What Kind of Retainers Are There? There are two types of retainers; fixed and removable. Fixed (also called permanent) retainers are placed on the tongue side of the front 4-6 teeth and stay there for few years if not longer. Overall periodontal (gum) health is the key to fixed retainers. Most teenagers are not capable of maintaining fixed retainers. Removable retainers are two kinds: the clear “Invisalign” retainers and wired Hawley retainers. The clear retainers look good, but they tend to be more fragile. The wired Hawley retainer is bulkier with its acrylic roof of the mouth coverage but allows for adjustments if teeth move and is sturdier. However, the best retainer is the one that is worn. That is the only way to ensure long lasting straight teeth.

Contraceptive Use: Which Option is Right for You? With so many safe and effective contraceptive options, each with their own pros and cons, it can be overwhelming to choose the best method. And depending on age, what works for women in their 20s may not be the right fit in their 40s. James P. McDermott, DO, a board certified ob/gyn at Ocean Woman’s Healthcare Group, part of Barnabas Health Medical Group, counsels countless women on various health issues, including contraceptive use.

Q: What are the most popular contraceptive (birth control) options? Dr. McDermott: Fortunately, there are more

options than ever before.

Birth Control Pills – The most popular option, birth control combination pills contain two hormones: estrogen and progestin. Typically, patients start with a lower dose estrogen pill, which produces lower side effects. Higher dose estrogen pills may cause weight gain, headaches and nausea. If taken as prescribed, birth control pills are 91% effective. But, women need to remember to take the pill at the same time every day.

“I present my patients with an overview of contraceptive options and take many factors into consideration to determine the best method,” says Dr. McDermott. “Age, health, lifestyle, childbearing plans and personal preference are all taken into account. A woman who is over 35 and is a smoker, for example, must avoid an estrogen/progestin birth control pill because it can be dangerous to her health. By learning about the options it becomes more clear what’s best.”

Over the years, the amount of estrogen in birth control pills has decreased significantly. In the 1980s, pills included 50 micrograms of estrogen and today, a low dose pill is just 10 micrograms.

Here, Dr. McDermott provides insight on contraceptives.

Depo-Provera – Taken by injection every three months, Depo-Provera contains progesterone only, and tends to have more side effects than birth control pills. This is not the best option for women who wish to conceive because it takes about 18 months for periods to become normal after stopping the Depo-Provera.

Q: Are contraceptives used only for birth control? Dr. McDermott: While the top reason women use

contraceptives is to prevent pregnancy, there are other uses. Contraceptives are also prescribed to treat certain disorders that cause heavy bleeding and menstrual pain, such as fibroids and endometriosis. Many teenage girls who suffer from difficult menstrual cycle symptoms can experience much relief and regularity by going on a low-dose birth control pill. I’ve also seen how it helps them with their self-esteem – they can get along with their lives just like every other teen. A low dose birth control pill can help some women in their 40s have a smoother transition into menopause.

Effectiveness: 91% Birth control pills are a good option for those who want to both prevent pregnancy and improve acne, bad menstrual cramps or other PMS symptoms.

Effectiveness: 94% Vaginal Ring – The ring, which provides a combination of estrogen and progestin, is inserted into the vagina and left in for three weeks. Then it’s taken out for a week, during the monthly period. After the period, a new ring is inserted. This cycle continues. The ring releases hormones that prevent ovaries from releasing eggs. Side effects are the same as the birth control pill. Effectiveness: 91%

Birth Control Patch – The patch is 2 inches by 2 inches and resembles a beige square bandage. It’s applied to the skin – such as the lower abdomen - and gives off a combination of estrogen and progestin that prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. The patch needs to be changed every week for three weeks, and then left off for a week during the monthly period. Effectiveness: 91% Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods (IUD and birth control implant) Over the long term, long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods like the IUD and birth control implant, are highly effective in preventing pregnancy, last for several years, and are easy to use. Intrauterine Device (IUD) – The small, T-shaped plastic device is inserted into and left inside the uterus. The hormonal IUD releases progestin and is approved for use up to 3 to 5 years. The copper IUD, which does not contain hormones, it approved for use for up to 10 years. Benefits of the IUD: once it is in place, women do not have to do anything else to prevent pregnancy; it doesn’t interfere with sex or daily activities. In addition, the IUD can be removed for pregnancy. Side effects: non-hormonal IUD may cause heavier periods and more cramping; but hormonal IUDs can make your period irregular or generally may not get a period at all. Effectiveness: 99.2% Birth Control Implant – This very small flexible rod – about the size of a matchstick - is inserted under the skin of a woman’s upper arm by a healthcare professional. It releases progestin into the body and protects against pregnancy for up to three years. Effectiveness: 99.05% (Effectiveness statistics are according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Y

our doctor has informed you that you need to have a colonoscopy. It may be for a routine screening due to your age or to investigate a problem, but regardless you know the dreaded bowel preparation will be needed. You may have heard horror stories from your friends and family and often it is the thought

of the bowel preparation, which stops patients from having this needed test. It is important for you to know that there are many preparation options and adjustments in timing that have made the bowel preparation for today’s colonoscopy much improved over that of the past.

Why do I need a Bowel Preparation?

The intent of the bowel preparation for colonoscopy is to remove all debris and stool from the colon so that your physician can have the clearest possible view of the colon. Any stool left in the colon will hinder your doctor’s ability to see small polyps and may lead to the need to repeat the exam.

Will I need to starve before the test?

What if I have questions or I take medications?

It is very important that you read all your directions thoroughly. Your doctor and their nurses and office staff are available to answer any questions. Your doctor will instruct you about which medications to take and which to hold. Diabetic medications may be adjusted, but typically blood pressure, heart or seizure medications are taken as usual. Some medications, like blood thinners may be held for up to a week before your procedure and some preps need to be prepared the night before so look at your directions before your scheduled date. Finally, you should realize that although the bowel preparation may not be the easiest part of your exam, it is certainly one of the most important. Your doctor and their staff are there to ensure that the preparation chosen is the right one for you and that you complete it properly, so that the important and needed colonoscopy can be completed as effortlessly as possible.. Jill Collier, MD, Medical Director, Endoscopy Center of Toms River

Visit www.GastroOfOcean.com

Starving is not required but you will be limited to fluids only for about 24 hours before your exam. These fluids do have nutrition and taste. You are allowed to drink water, broth, coffee, tea, Gatorade, fruit juices, soda, ice pops and Jell-O. No red fluids should be taken. There should be no pulp or sediment in the liquids. A small amount of milk added to your coffee or tea is allowed, as are sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Will I have to drink a nasty tasting laxative to prepare?

There are multiple methods to cleanse the colon and the majority doesn’t have a bad taste. Which preparation is chosen may vary depending on your health and your doctor’s preference. MiraLAX laxative is a colorless powder that can be dissolved into any fluid without leaving any taste or grit. Citrate of Magnesia is a salt solution, which can be diluted with other liquids to make it more palatable. Flavored buffered solutions like Golytely can also be utilized by prescription. Lastly the pill prep, Osmo-prep, can be taken in select individuals without any history of high blood pressure, kidney disease or seizures.

When will I have to drink the laxatives and can I work that day?

The timing of your preparation will vary with your scheduled arrival time, your doctor’s preference and your individual health needs. Typically for procedures scheduled before noon you will begin your preparation when you awaken the morning the day before your exam, starting your liquid diet with breakfast and taking the first dose of laxative about 10 am. For those patients with a procedure scheduled later in the day you may have what is called split dose prep. This allows you to have a solid breakfast the day before your exam and start your liquids at lunchtime. You will begin the laxative component of your preparation at five pm the day before the exam and you will awaken early on the day of your procedure to complete the second half of your laxative preparation. With the split dose prep you can easily work the day before your colonoscopy.

When do I stop drinking liquids?

Finally, because you will be receiving anesthesia for your examination, your stomach must be empty of all fluid and food for at least four to six hours prior to the exam. Those patients with a morning-scheduled procedure are not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the exam. Those with procedures scheduled after 1 pm, are not to drink or eat anything after completing their morning laxative.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS “Staff here always receptive, pleasant and caring, including Dr. Collier, as always! Everyone was very attentive and efficient. It was my first time using Dulcolax and Miralax prep. It was easy to take and worked VERY well!” —Jane, 64, Brick “The medical staff was excellent. Dr. Collier has a great bedside manner and explained things very clearly. All staff double-checked and confirmed all of my information before the procedure. Very professional.” — Jeff, 49, Forked River

Help Your Loved One Stay Connected

t is difficult to watch someone struggle to hear, but talking to them about it can be challenging. Hearing loss usually creeps up so slowly that a person does not even realize it is happening. Even though someone’s hearing loss seems obvious to us, that person may be in denial or reluctant to admit that they are having difficulty hearing the world around them. Hearing loss doesn’t just affect the person who has it. It also affects spouses, family members and friends.

Get Your Loved One To Bring Up The Issue After deciding when and where you will speak to your loved one about hearing loss, consider how you think he or she will react. One method of broaching the subject of hearing loss is by simply mentioning to that you have noticed that this person has recently avoided conversations or speaking on the phone. You can then ask if anything is wrong. Often, your loved one will mention that it has been harder to hear clearly. Be Patient During The Conversation Try not to become frustrated with your loved one, even if he or she denies having hearing loss. Avoid listing all the times you have noticed problems related to his or her hearing loss. This will quickly end the conversation and both of you will walk away angry.

Untreated hearing loss can cause a person to lose confidence, withdraw socially, become isolated or even depressed. What appears to be memory loss or dementia may be hearing loss. The right hearing aids can make an amazing different in their life. Helping them hear all the sounds of the world around them, the right solution will simply enable them to live their life to the fullest.

Know that many people with hearing loss realize their hearing ability has changed, but they are simply scared to admit it. With a patient and caring approach to this difficult conversation topic, most people will eventually acknowledge that they do have concerns about their hearing.

There are steps that you can take to encourage your loved one to seek treatment of their hearing loss… How You Can Help Hearing loss is often seen as a sign of aging and declining general health. However, this is frequently not the case. Hearing loss can happen to anyone at any age, or in any health condition. Choose The Right Time And Place To Talk Choosing the right time and place for a discussion about hearing loss is crucial. When you start the conversation about hearing problems, try to take the attention off of their hearing problems use “I” statements, like: “I am concerned about your hearing; it would make me feel better if you got it checked out. Although hearing loss can affect the entire family, the ideal first conversation should be one on one.

Show Compassion It’s common for someone to deny their hearing loss. It’s helpful to discuss how advances in technology have changed the way hearing aids look and perform. Because the idea of experiencing hearing loss can be daunting, it is important for you to give any support your loved one needs. Tell your loved one you are willing to do whatever it takes to help. Show your desire to help by offering to take the individual to have a hearing test. Suggesting the entire family have a hearing test at the same time is also a great option that can make someone feel less anxious. While talking about hearing loss can be challenging, it is necessary. Remember that you have the best intentions at heart for your loved one and your family. We’ve helped family members and friends, just like you, who want to share the gift of better hearing.

Better Hearing Leads to a Better Life

D

r. Jill Gordon first became interested in the field of Audiology when she was just ten years old. At that time her brother was treated for vocal nodules by a speech pathologist. She adds, “His communication was limited to a pencil and notepad. Watching his frustration of not being able to communicate his thoughts inspired me to pursue a career in Communication Disorders and Sciences.” Ultimately, she obtained a Doctor of Audiology degree and her lifelong dream of receiving a degree from Columbia University and of owning her own practice has all come true. As the owner of the Professional Hearing Center, Dr. Gordon and her talented team provide comprehensive hearing health care services, ranging from diagnosis to rehabilitation for individuals of all ages. Dr. Gordon adds, “We are committed to helping each patient toward the goal of improved quality of life through better hearing. Watching people reconnect with their families and loved ones gives us all tremendous pleasure.”

MCW: What are the most common issues you see in your day-to-day practice? Dr. Gordon: Hearing loss is prevalent in almost two thirds of adults over the age of 70 and it remains undertreated. Patients wait too long to obtain hearing aids. Over the past several years, medical researchers have begun to piece together the links between hearing loss and cognitive decline that may ultimately lead to dementia. Though there are a number of possible causes of dementia in the elderly, preventive hearing care measures and more aggressive treatment of hearing impairment, which may include the fitting of hearing aids, can help keep the brain healthy and active.

MCW: What is the most rewarding part of your profession? Dr. Gordon: Bringing improved hearing and better communication to our patients’ lives is our passion. Seeing people reconnect with their families and loved ones is a tremendous pleasure for us. We strive to continue making such connections and are constantly motivated to do so by the joyful stories that our patients are experiencing through better hearing.

Jill Gordon, Au.D.,CCC-A, F-AAA

MCW: What is the most challenging part?

MCW: Tell us what happens during an Audiological Evaluation.

Dr. Gordon: It is important for patients to understand that hearing aids are not a “one size fits all” solution. Patients have their own particular communication needs and lifestyles. Every brain functions differently so what works for one patient may not work for the next. Patients also must understand that the fitting of amplification is a process. Often times they must return to our office for adjustments and counseling to insure the best results with hearing aids. Expectations must be managed and explained.

Dr. Gordon: This is the initial evaluation which will determine if a hearing loss is present, and if so, to detail the type and severity of it. Hearing impairment affects more than just your ability to hear — it affects your quality of life. Dr. Gordon stresses the importance of an accurate and timely hearing test. The hearing evaluation is just the beginning of your treatment, and it’s essential to setting your unique care plan in motion and taking action on hearing loss. Your in-depth hearing evaluation will help us craft a treatment plan that renews your ability to hear, allowing you to truly hear your best and live life on your terms. The evaluation will begin with a thorough review of your medical history. We will ask questions about your hearing, and examine your ears with a lighted instrument known as an otoscope. This is to make sure there’s no earwax or a foreign object obstructing your eardrum. Finally, you’ll be given a series of hearing tests to determine whether you have a hearing loss. The evaluation will provide insight into the cause of the hearing loss as well as provide guidance in making appropriate treatment recommendations.

MCW: What makes Professional Hearing Center different from other facilities like it? Dr. Gordon: For over 30 years, the staff of Professional Hearing Center has helped people improve the quality of their lives through better hearing. We enjoy getting to know each of our patients and by building relationships; we are able to customize the best solutions for their hearing needs. We have the expertise and state of the art equipment to diagnose your hearing problems and we will thoroughly explain our findings and recommendations to you and your family. If necessary, we will fit you with hearing aids that are appropriate for your loss and lifestyle, and we will give you the time and training you need to adjust to them properly.

CELEBRATING

YEARS In Private Practice

More than 42 million Americans have some type of hearing loss. The good news is that most of these people can be helped. Dr. Gordon and her staff believe wholeheartedly that better hearing leads to a better life. Bringing improved hearing and better communication to their patient’s lives is their passion.

The Left Side of my Abdomen Hurts — Could it be Diverticulitis? Abdominal pain is one of the most common complaints patients have when they come to my office. There are many causes of pain in the abdomen and pelvis. If the pain is in the lower abdomen, and particularly if the pain is located on the left side, it may be a symptom of diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is the inammation of small out-pouchings of bowel called “diverticula.” Although many forms of diverticulitis are resolved with rest, temporary changes in diet, and antibiotics, some extremes cases may require surgery. Early detection and treatment is crucial in fighting this malady. Q: What are diverticula? What causes them? A: First, the “bowel” are the loops of intestine in your abdomen that digest food. All of us have a small bowel and large bowel (also called the colon). “Diverticula” are small sacs that form off the wall of the bowel. Although they can form anywhere along the intestines, the left colon is the most common location.

Q: How do you diagnose diverticulitis? A: A physical exam performed by a doctor can diagnose diverticulitis. A CT scan is often performed to see if the diverticulitis is mild and uncomplicated and can be treated with medications alone, or if it requires surgery. Early detection and treatment is crucial.

Nobody knows for sure what causes diverticula to form. One popular theory has to do with pressure from the muscle spasms moving food and stool through the bowels. Food enters the large bowel, where it continues to digest. By the end of the large bowel, the food is now considered stool and needs to be defecated. That is what we call a “bowel movement.” The colon has to produce lots of pressure to move heavy/dense stool through its long length. With that buildup in pressure over decades, small bulging pouches can form at weak areas of the colon wall. These small pouches are called diverticula. Once diverticula form, they do not go away.

Small diverticulum extending from the colon

Q: What is diverticulitis? How is it treated? A: When a diverticula becomes inflamed, it is called diverticulitis. The symptoms include pain, especially in the left lower abdomen, as well as fever, nausea, and change in bowel habits. Mild cases can be treated with antibiotics, a liquid diet for a few days, and Tylenol for pain. Severe cases of diverticulitis can cause the diseased bowel to scar down (called a stricture) and not let any stool pass. In some cases, a hole may form in the bowel (perforation), which can spill stool, acids, and bacteria into your abdominal cavity. In these cases, an abscess may form and requires drainage. In other cases, the diseased bowel can “stick” to the vagina or bladder and form an unnatural connection (called a fistula). In these severe cases, surgery may be required to repair (or remove) the diseased bowel and fix any additional complications.

Q: How common is it to have diverticula? A: Having multiple diverticula is called diverticulosis. There are no symptoms of having diverticulosis. This is rare in patients under 30 years old. But it is very common in patients over 60 years old. Diverticulosis is slightly more common in men than women. The stool in your colon moves from right to left. The stool in the left side of your colon is the densest and it is being held until the next bowel movement. This causes increased pressure in the left side of your colon compared to the right. Therefore most diverticula are found in the left side of your colon.

Q: What are the risk factors to develop diverticulitis? A: Smoking, diets high in animal fat and low in fiber, obesity, lack of exercise, and advanced age are all risk factors. Other risk factors include medications such as steroids, opiate painkillers, and non-opiate painkillers (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen).. Q: If I have diverticulosis, can I prevent having diverticulitis? A: To prevent diverticulitis, doctors often recommend maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and not smoking. High-fiber foods with lots of water can also help decrease the risk of diverticulitis. Q: What about avoiding nuts and seeds? A: In the past, it was thought that foods which contained indigestible particles such as nuts, fruits with very small seeds, and popcorn caused diverticulitis. The thinking was that these tiny nuts and seeds can fall inside a diverticula and cause inflammation. However, a recent large study has shown this was not the case, and patients who ate popcorn and nuts did not increase their risk of developing diverticulitis. That being said, many patients who have had multiple bouts of diverticulitis believe these types of food are triggers.

Laser Vaginal Revitalization With The MonaLisa Touch®

A

effects on one’s quality of life and personal relationships.

ccording to the North American Menopause Society, as many as 45 percent of post-menopausal women suffer from vaginal atrophy, which causes symptoms that severely detract from their quality of life and intimate relationships. For over 30 years, Dr. Sutherland has worked with CO2 lasers in many gynecological treatments and is the first doctor in Monmouth and Ocean Counties that is trained in the MonaLisa Touch® application, a minimal-invasive treatment for woman that treats problem vaginal symptoms such as dryness, itching, irritation, burning and painful intercourse.

How Does MonaLisa Touch® Procedure Work? The MonaLisa Touch® is a minimally invasive procedure that uses C02 fractional laser technology to reverse vaginal atrophy and laxity, often caused by hormonal changes in pre- and post-menopausal women. The laser is inserted into the vagina and laser pulses stimulate new collagen production in the vaginal wall. Laser vaginal revitalization naturally increases blood flow and lubrication to help improve the natural function of the vagina.

What to Expect During the Procedure?

MonaLisa Touch® vaginal revitalization is an outpatient procedure that lasts less than 30 minutes. Three sessions are recommended to achieve the best results. Laser vaginal revitalization is not painful, but an anesthetic cooling cream can be applied before the treatment to reduce discomfort. Patients should refrain from sexual activity for two days following the procedure, but can otherwise resume their normal routine. MonaLisa Touch® received FDA approval in late 2014 and launched in March 2015. www.monalisatouchnorthdover.com The procedure, which is typically three treatments spaced six weeks apart, has been met with excellent results in Europe, Australia, and South America, where MonaLisa Touch® has been performed on thousands of patients. Quit Smoking, Live Longer

Ocean Hematology & Oncology Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders

Submitted by Sarah J. Easaw, MD, FACP

Cigarette smoking is injurious to health…It is written right on the package itself. Then why do 45 million adults continue to smoke? Maybe they don’t know how negatively cigarettes can affect your health. The number of smokers has gone down consistently in the last few decades. In 1965, 42% of the population smoked; it is decreased to 19 percent by 2010. This is due to the increasing awareness about the adverse effects of smoking. Nineteen percent is still a significant part of the population. Tobacco-related illnesses are a major cause of death in adults. • Why do people smoke? Most people start smoking at a young age. 1 in 3 male and 1 out of 5 female high school students used some form of tobacco, based on a survey in 2009. Often, the habit is started due to peer pressure, to impress people who are smokers. The tobacco industry also spends millions of dollars on marketing that attracts youngsters. Once started, smoking is difficult to control. Nicotine is a very addictive substance. It gives a pleasant feeling by working on the brain cells, altering the chemistry, making the person want to smoke more. The habit-forming potential of nicotine is similar to that of drugs that can cause addiction. Smokers develop emotional and physical withdrawal symptoms when attempting to quit. So even when someone wants to quit smoking, the process becomes very difficult. • What are the diseases that are related to smoking? Heart disease, atherosclerosis, lung disease (COPD, Emphysema), vascular disease (blockage of arteries), stroke, cancer… the list goes on. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the Unites States. Smokers are at high risk of getting heart attacks and of sudden death from heart disease. Smoking especially damages the lining of the lungs, resulting in chronic lung diseases such as COPD. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the US. There are 12 million people in the US suffering from COPD and 75 percent of those cases are related to smoking. The risk of developing COPD is related to the number of cigarettes smoked and the duration. • What are some of the cancers that are related to smoking? Smoking accounts for 30 percent of cancer related deaths in the U.S., and causes 80 percent of all lung cancers. The risk of developing lung cancer is also proportional to the number of cigarettes smoked in one’s lifetime. Smoking can also cause cancers of the throat, mouth, nasopharynx, larynx (voice box), esophagus and urinary bladder. Cervical cancer and pancreatic cancer are also linked to smoking. • I was already diagnosed with cancer; what is the point of quitting now? This is very common attitude of smokers when they are hit with a diagnosis of cancer. Actually, the treatment of cancer will be more difficult if a person continues to smoke. Side effects such as nausea, mouth sores and loss of appetite are more pronounced in those who choose to smoke than those who decide to quit.

MYTHS ABOUT QUITTING SMOKING

1255 Route 70, 31S

Myth: Smoking is a personal choice. Fact: Although more than half of all Americans who ever smoked quit, tobacco contains the addictive chemical nicotine, and many people experience nicotine dependence for a long time after they start smoking. Myth: Smokers can quit by themselves; a doctor’s advice isn’t needed. Fact: Doctors provide support, information and any necessary drug therapies to help people to quit. Myth: Most smoking cessation treatments have a low success rate. Fact: Although very few people successfully quit smoking without any medication or other support,

there are treatments that can significantly improve smoking cessation rates. Among people with cancer, quit rates often exceed 50 percent.

Myth: Quitting smoking is too stressful for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Fact: Although nicotine dependence is hard to break because the withdrawal process can be uncomfortable, the benefits of quitting smoking outweigh the discomforts.

A variety of treatments and resources are available for people who want to stop smoking, including medications and counseling. Your likelihood of successfully quitting is greater if you use a comprehensive plan that includes steps such as setting a quit date, developing strategies to deal with smoking triggers, and building a network of support. Suffering From Pelvic Pressure And Difficulty Eliminating? Dr. Paonessa helps to make sense of your symptoms. Are you a woman who has had a vaginal delivery that resulted in birthing trauma such as forceps delivery, vacuum delivery, tearing with vaginal delivery, or episiotomy? Perhaps you have a history of constipation, straining with bowel movements, or have had prior gynecologic (hysterectomy) or rectal surgeries. If so, there is a possibility that you can be suffering from weakening of the pelvic floor muscles because all of the above are common causes of pelvic floor disorder (PFD). A common form of PFD is a rectocele. What is a rectocele? A rectocele is a bulging of the front wall of the rectum into the back of the vagina. A rectocele is caused by the thinning of the rectovaginal septum. The rectovaginal septum is the tissue between the rectum and the vagina. This occurs secondary to weakening of the muscles of the pelvic floor. Other pelvic organs that may bulge into the vagina are the bladder (this is called a cystocele) and the small intestine (called an enterocele). All of these disorders are classified as forms of pelvic floor disorder (PFD). What are the symptoms of a rectocele? A majority of patients who suffer from a rectocele have no noticeable symptoms. When symptoms are present, they are classified as either rectal or vaginal. Women who experience rectal symptoms may be having a difficult time evacuating during bowel movements. Some women actually need to press against the back wall of the vagina or the perineal body (the area between the vagina and the rectum) to have a bowel movement. There are women who even have to manually remove the stool from the rectum. Those who experience vaginal symptoms may have a bulge or a fullness in the vagina, protruding of the vagina, and/or discomfort during sexual intercourse. Many women often have a combination of both rectal and vaginal symptoms. A symptomatic rectocele may lead to excessive straining, an urge or need to have multiple bowel movements, rectal pain, fecal incontinence, and/or stool trapping in the rectocele that will seep out of the anus later on during the day. Significant stool trapping in the rectum leads to an increased urge to defecate, especially when standing. A rectocele can usually be diagnosed by taking a complete history and having a physical examination by your doctor. In many cases further testing will need to be done. There are special x-rays, including defecography, barium enema, and pelvic MRI/defecography, that may be performed to help assess the degree, severity, and size of the rectocele. How is a rectocele treated? A rectocele should only be treated when symptoms are significant and interfering with a woman’s quality of life. There are medical and surgical treatment options available. As with any treatment, your physician will review all of the options and let you know the best option for your condition. Board-certified in general surgery and proctology and a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, Dr. Paonessa specializes in colon and rectal surgery. She has been in practice for 13 years. She completed her colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. She is co-editor of the textbook Surgical Treatment of Hemorrhoids, 2nd edition. Dr. Paonessa believes in patient-centered care and preserving each patient’s independence, well-being and dignity. She provides the latest, up-to-date treatments and tailors each plan of care to the individual patient’s needs. Call 732-282-1500.

The County Woman Magazine

Most patients can be treated with medical management. Like other rectal conditions, it is very important to have a good bowel regimen to avoid constipation and straining during bowel movements. By doing this, it will allow for softer stools, which eliminates straining during bowel movements and avoids stool trapping in the rectocele. Another treatment is strengthening the pelvic floor muscles with exercises called Kegels. Biofeedback is a specialized form of pelvic floor training that can be done as an outpatient. Surgical treatment will only be considered after the medical alternatives have not been successful. There are three different surgical approaches used to surgically repair a rectocele: abdominal, rectal, and vaginal. Your surgeon will determine which approach is best for you. Surgery for rectocele is to remove the excess tissue that comprises the rectocele and to strengthen the wall of the vagina and rectum. Colorectal surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat rectoceles and other forms of PFD. Dr. Paonessa is a fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon who has been treating women with rectoceles and PFD for over 13 years. Her approach is conservative management of a woman’s symptoms. Surgical intervention is reserved only for those women whose symptoms cannot be controlled with medical/non-surgical management. Most women exclaim that they cannot believe they waited so long to seek treatment and relief of their symptoms, especially since treatments are quite simple. Women who have received treatment for their symptoms of rectocele/PFD have improved quality of life. The anxiety and social stress and/or isolation associated with the symptoms caused by a rectocele/PFD can be eliminated. If you feel that you may be experiencing any of the symptoms discussed about rectocele/PFD, call Dr. Paonessa’s office today to schedule an appointment for a consultation.

So I Have DVT? (Deep Venous Thrombosis) Hi friends, Today, I am going to talk to you about prevention, and the guidelines that physicians have to practice in prescribing the various methods of prevention. DVT is a condition where there is a clot formation in the deep veins, largely in the legs, and the pelvic veins. The arm veins are occasionally affected as well. The reasons for this vary from patients who are immobile and bedridden, temporarily immobile due to acute illness requiring hospitalization, air travel, surgery, and trauma. These situations can be aggravated when patients have coagulation abnormality, which is genetic and inherited. In such patients, DVT can be caused without any aggravating conditions. The important reason for treating this condition is the risk of Pulmonary Embolism (“PE”), which can be fatal when acute. Chronic recurrent PE can cause decreased pulmonary function and pulmonary hypertension. DVT in the deep veins of legs can also create prolonged suffering in causing swelling, venous hypertension, skin changes, and ulcer in the leg. These above reasons are why it is not only important to diagnose and treat the condition when present, but also take precautions to prevent it. There is a general push to administer prevention for every patient, regardless of risk. As a result of this, many patients receive unnecessary therapies, which not only do not provide the benefits desired, but cause complications. The guidelines provided by ACCP are evidence based, include new innovations, and provide more than 600 recommendations for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of venous thrombosis. New evidence-based guidelines form ACCP recommends considering an individual patients’ risk of thrombosis when deciding for or against use of preventive therapy. These guidelines are published in the February 2012 issue of the Journal and focuses on risk stratification of patients, namely a patient’s risk for DVT as opposed to the patient’s risk of bleeding from prevention therapy. These recommendations consider various major clinical areas such as medical, non-orthopedic surgery, orthopedic surgery, pregnancy, cardiovascular disease, atrial fibrillation, stroke, long distance travel, and pediatrics. Long Distance Travel Developing a travel related DVT is unlikely in general. Many factors increase the risk, according to the guidelines. These are: previous DVT, known thrombophilic disorder, malignancy, recent surgery, trauma, immobility, estrogen use, pregnancy, sitting in a window seat. Recommendations for patients with increased risk include: frequent ambulation, calf muscle stretching, sitting in an isle seat if possible, and use of belowknee graduated compression stockings. There is no definitive evidence to support that dehydration, alcohol intake, or economy class seats increase the risk for DVT from long distance travel. There is a new surgical modality used to treat DVT. In the July/August issue, I will explain the new treatment using IVUS, Intra Vascular Ultrasound. IVUS shows a crosssection of both the interior, and the layers of the artery wall itself, which will help with the process of curing DVT..

Tweak Your Mind to Tweak Your Body . . . It’s Never Just About Food Almost every weight loss client says, “I know what to do; I just can’t do it.” It seems simple enough to drop some pounds and inches: Eat wholesome foods in the right amounts and move more. But if it’s that straightforward, why are so many Americans overweight or obese? It’s never just about food. At a conscious level, most people know what to do; but old patterns and beliefs are powerful and they become so embedded that it’s often challenging to move beyond them. Hypnosis and coaching can help you develop a better mindset and address weight management challenges at a deeper level. You might expect a hypnosis practitioner / wellness coach to tell you that with the right tools and techniques, weight management is easy. Even with this empowering approach, it takes work; but after a short while, being on a healthy path begins to feel natural.

You may not be aware of the ways you’ve been thwarting your own efforts. Following are some blocks to be aware of, and actions you can take now to help you move forward: • Think about some of the negative self-programming you’ve done over time concerning your appearance, weight, inability to stay on track, and so on. By constantly putting yourself down, doubting yourself, and making excuses, you’ve programmed yourself to expect failure. Do any of these

statements sound familiar? “I can never keep weight off.” “Almost everyone in my family is heavy; it’s in my genes.” “I don’t have the time to shop and prepare healthy meals.” “There’s no time to exercise.” “I have no control.” “I want to eat what I want to eat.”

• Write down negative statements you’ve been repeating to yourself. Where do you think they come from? Do they serve you well? Challenge them. Replace the statements with empowering beliefs, and write those down. Post them in places

where you’ll see them. Repeat those affirmations to yourself frequently and with conviction – and let those strong feelings flow through every part of you. Changing your self-talk is just one step, but it’s a necessary step. • Learn to recognize and deal with your emotions appropriately. Food isn’t meant to be a way to deal with stress, anger, sadness, boredom, loneliness, or any other emotion. And eating isn’t meant to be a hobby. If your friend says, “I’m feeling so bored,” would you suggest she entertain herself by eating a few slices of pizza? Hopefully not. You’d probably encourage her to find something to do. Food is for fuel. Period. Put good fuel in your body, in the right amounts, and you’ll be rewarded. Start paying attention to your feelings and the messages they’re conveying. Give yourself what you really need. If you think you’re hungry, put one hand over your heart and one hand over your belly, and ask yourself, “What is it that really needs filling?” Again, it’s never just about food.

If you would like personalized assistance to help you move forward, call me at 732-270-0080. Integrating hypnotic techniques and coaching paves the way for successful outcomes and boosts your sense of well-being.

Wedding Cake Trends for 2017! To a certain extent, wedding cake trends are predictable. For starters, the most traditional white tiered cakes never go out of style. And while other trends change year by year, you can anticipate them by watching wedding dress trends. Weddings tend to hold a theme and, consciously or not, many brides’ dresses are reflected in their choice of cake. But there are also, every year, cake trends that are trendy because… well… just because they’re trending. Today, via ColinCowieWeddings, we bring you trends predicted to be big in 2017! (All photos ours!)

Naked

Geode

No need to be bashful. That’s right. The popularity of the naked cake is staying strong! By switching out fruit for greenery, flowers, or whatever else you can think of, you have all the decorating flexibility of a traditional iced cake.

It just doesn’t get any cooler than a colorful (and edible) mineral rock formation to split your cake. We agree! They’re fun and delicious, and beautiful to look at!

Metallic Ruffled Can a cake get any more cute and feminine? Well, it could… We offer cakes with even more ruffles than that! Your dress is glam, your heels are sparkly, and your reception rivals the Met Gala… so your cake should be nothing less than shimmery sweet heaven! Bling is a thing. No matter how many sparkles you plan for your wedding, we can find room for a few more!

Shiny metallic additions make for the most glitzy and luxe-looking cake. If you’re planning on gold or silver making an appearance in your color scheme, we highly suggest a touch of metal in your cake! We agree. Whether an entire tier or just as accent, metallics can really make your cake memorable.

Small Cake, Big Cake Topper We wouldn’t have called this a cake trend necessarily… but we do this, too! You’ll have to decide on your wedding cake style for yourself. Traditional, thematic, or trendy. But whatever you choose, we got you! Call for a custom cake consultation and tasting with a professional cake designer!

NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS’ DAY is on June 4, 2017

Celebrating Life… While Living with Cancer

J“

Submitted by Dr. Sarah Easaw (Dr. Sarah Easaw is a board-certified Hematology and Oncology specialist, practicing in Ocean County, NJ)

ust before I turned 30, I was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. My daughter was six months old at the time. Doctors said I needed surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I was devastated… I didn’t know what the future would hold for me and our family…” Tina,* now 36, was explaining her story at the Cancer Survivors’ Day celebrations conducted by our practice, Ocean Hematology & Oncology. She came to the party with her two beautiful children… two-year-old Mark* and Elena,* who will soon be seven. Later Tina was dancing to the country music with the two of them. Several people joined – many of them have survived cancer; some are still dealing with it. But this is a day they want to forget about their struggles, not thinking about the months of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery that most of them had to go through. Not worrying about the uncertainty of the future. They are not concerned about the disability that their disease and the treatment had left them with. This is a day they want to celebrate! They are celebrating life. Statistics show that there are 15 million cancer survivors living in the United States. By 2026 it is estimated that the number will reach 20 million. Cancer treatment has improved dramatically in the last two decades. More and more people are living with cancer, as early detection and treatment have improved. Two out of three patients diagnosed with cancer are expected to live for five years or more, according to the CDC. Living with cancer is stressful. But life after cancer has its own challenges. The National Cancer Survivors’ Day (NCSD) Foundation was started about three decades ago to recognize cancer survivors and their families and to address the problems they face. Every year they organize events nationwide to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers. National Cancer Survivors’ Day is an annual “Celebration of Life” that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide, and around the world, on the first Sunday in June. NCSD states: “It is a CELEBRATION for those who have survived, an INSPIRATION for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of SUPPORT for families, and an OUTREACH to the community.” On this day, thousands gather across the world to honor cancer survivors and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding and even inspiring. According to the definition given by NCSD, anyone who is diagnosed with cancer is a survivor. Challenges start the day you are told about the diagnosis. They do not end when treatment ends. In fact, for many, the anxiety level increases after the treatment is over. During active treatment, patients are seen by their health care professionals very frequently. When the treatment is done and they are labeled “cancer-free,” a whole new set of problems awaits them. This could be the beginning of anxiety and depression in many, as the security of being with their health care team is no longer there. Many feel like they are set free into a new world, and they have to start a new life, as if they have to learn to walk again.

Even with the new advances in cancer treatment, there are side effects that could linger on for months or years. This would make going back to their previous lifestyle difficult. Although most survivors are able to return to work, they may not be able to perform at their fullest. This, along with the time lost from work during the treatment, can cause significant financial strain. A cancer diagnosis can tear families apart. Although many families get together to support, not everyone is able to cope when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. Being a caregiver for a cancer patient is not easy. This has led to many separations and divorces, not necessarily from lack of love and affection, but due to the inability to withstand the stress. It is not rare that the survivors feel physical and emotional loneliness at the end of their tiresome journey. The fear of “what if the cancer comes back?” is real for most survivors. Any new symptom, even trivial, can raise tremendous anxiety. This can lead to many doctors’ appointments and unnecessary diagnostic tests. The physical, psychological, financial and emotional strain that survivors and their families undergo has to be dealt with seriously. We have been hosting an annual Cancer Survivors’ Day celebration for the past eight years. It started out as a small gathering in our waiting room. This event has been so wellreceived by our patients and their families; each year the number of attendees has increased. Now we are holding the event in an outside venue. The tremendous support from wellwishers and the dedication of my staff make this event very colorful and successful every year. But it is the survivors and families who are the stars of the day. To see 55-year-old Carolyn,* battling throat cancer; 60-year-old Mary,* a two-time breast cancer survivor, widow of Robert,* who succumbed to blood cancer five years ago; and the children of Tina,* three and seven years old… all come to one stage to dance, laugh, sing and share their stories. To see the joy and happiness on their faces… that is what survivors’ celebrations are all about. Mrs. Francis,* mother of 23-year-old David,* who was diagnosed with CML last month, put it very nicely as she was leaving the party. She lost her older son nine years ago. She said, “Today was my older son’s death anniversary. Usually I sit at home and cry every year, this day. Today, I would have done the same, more so since Daniel was diagnosed with cancer too. But then I thought of the invitation to this event. I told Daniel, we are going to celebrate life today. I went to the cemetery in the morning, prayed for my sons and came for this party. This has been the most wonderful thing that happened to us in a while. I have never enjoyed this much in a long time! Thank you for giving me an opportunity to celebrate life…!” Yes, celebrating life, one moment at a time, is what Cancer Survivors’ Day is all about! *names changed for patient privacy

YMCA of Western Monmouth County Honors Preston Family and Graeme Preston Foundation For Life The Graeme Preston Foundation For Life was formed in 2008 to honor Graeme Preston, who passed away at age 12, to celebrate his life and start a movement built on kindness and generosity. In addition, Patrick Preston, brother of Freehold Township Mayor Lester Preston, is a former Y Board member and past Endowment Committee Chair and continues to be a volunteer coach. The Graeme Preston Foundation supports individuals and groups who demonstrate and uphold the principles by which Graeme lived. From offering scholarships to deserving youth, to helping local families who have suffered an unexpected loss or hardship, the Foundation has provided grants of over $575,000

to families and organizations in the community. For more information on the Foundation, visit www.graemeprestonfoundation.org. Highlights of the evening included entertainment by Mission Dance band, a 50/50 raffle, and silent and ticket auction items. All proceeds from this event go directly to our YCares Financial Assistance Program which enables our Association to offer programs and services to all members of our community regardless of their ability to pay. The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits strengthening communities through youth

development, healthy living and social responsibility. We are a diverse association of men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life, joined by a shared commitment to nurture the potential of all people. For over 120 years, the YMCA of Western Monmouth County is proud of its many accomplishments, which include providing $359,000 in Financial Assistance to the children, adults and seniors in our community and helping over 20,125 people become healthier in spirit, mind and body through membership at our Y.

The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like Lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues.

Lupus is NOT infectious, rare or cancerous. Lupus affects people of all ages, including children, but it most often strikes people when they are between the age of 15 and 45. Nine out of ten people with Lupus are women. Although the cause of Lupus is unknown, scientists suspect that individuals are genetically predisposed to Lupus and know that environmental factors such as infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light, extreme stress and certain drugs play a critical role in triggering Lupus. Women are five times more likely to die from Lupus than men. African Americans are three times more likely to die from Lupus than Caucasians. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose as the symptoms come and go and mimic any other illnesses. Some symptoms of Lupus can include transient joint and muscle pain, fatigue, a rash caused by or made worse by sensitivity of the fingers to the cold. The risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and osteoporosis is much higher in people with Lupus than in the general population. While medical science has not yet developed a cure for Lupus, new research brings unexpected findings and increased hope each year.

Every Day Heroes In Your Community Ordinary people can do extraordinary things by volunteering their time to help others with the American Red Cross. You can have a positive impact on your community – and yes, help save lives. The Red Cross awarded some of its outstanding volunteers in Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic Counties who go above and beyond to help others in need. Highlighted here are a few of the every day heroes honored recently.

American Red Cross of Southern Shore New Jersey Board Chair Donna Schempp (left) presents the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award to Brenda Ball (center) while Red Cross Volunteer Services Chief Michelle Esposito looks on during the Red Cross Volunteer Recognition event in Pleasantville, New Jersey on Thursday, March 9, 2017.

American Red Cross Jersey Coast Pacesetter Award Terry Studnicky of Toms River, Ocean County

Terry volunteers with nearly all Red Cross lines of service and has been doing so for more than ten years. This past year in particular, has been marked by her standout and consistent support of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign. Working in an administrative capacity, Terry helps in the days prior to canvassing events by assembling educational materials and packing the trailers with needed supplies. Terry enjoys attending Home Fire Campaign events and educating residents about fire safety. Having seen the devastation of fires, Terry makes it a priority to be part of this lifesaving campaign. Terry continues to inspire all at the Red Cross with her dedication year after year, and our Home Fire Campaign is strengthened through her unwavering commitment and volunteer service.

American Red Cross of Southern Shore New Jersey Outstanding Volunteer Service Award Brenda Ball of Galloway, Atlantic County

Brenda is a Lead Volunteer with Red Cross Disaster Services who is extremely dedicated to the Red Cross mission and committed to serving her community. Brenda is always at the ready to provide compassionate care to those devastated by disasters and can regularly be found running out in the middle of the night to provide comfort and emergency financial assistance to families who have been displaced by home fires. She also helps the New Jersey Region prepare for largescale disasters by conducting shelter surveys, ensuring space is available should a shelter need to be opened. Brenda also mentors new volunteers, lends a helping hand around the office and supports Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces programs. During her five years with the Red Cross, Brenda has volunteered more than 700 hours and has been on-call and ready to respond to disasters for an additional 1,800 hours!

Home Fire Campaign

The American Red Cross has launched the Home Fire Campaign to reduce the number of home fire-related deaths and injuries by 25 percent by 2020. Working together in communities across the nation, the Red Cross, fire departments, businesses, schools, nonprofits, neighborhood leaders and others are mobilizing resources and volunteers to stamp out needless fire deaths. We canvass neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms and deliver fire prevention information in places we know have a high amount of home fires. Help us SOUND THE ALARM in New Jersey this October and participate in a nationwide initiative. Join us as we bring fire safety to 21 counties in 21 days, installing thousands of free smoke alarms in New Jersey homes that need them. Get involved with the Home Fire Campaign! Learn more and sign up to volunteer at redcross.org/SoundTheAlarmNJ.
