A NEW SENSATION AT REHABILITY NJ

MicroVASCULAR

NEUROPATHY CARE!

Peripheral Neuropathy is a nerve disorder known to affect the lives of millions of Americans with debilitating symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning and prickling pains in the legs, feet, arms and hands. Over time, many people also develop difficulty with walking, balance and muscle weakness. It is a complication associated with several different medical conditions, including Diabetes, Cancer, Peripheral Vascular Disease and Metabolic disorders most commonly. While some cases improve when the underlying cause is managed effectively, sometimes the cause may not always be detectable. As nerve damage tends to worsen over time, it is crucial to be proactive with proper treatment, avoiding any negative impact on quality of life.

NUMBNESS, ALTERED SENSATION TINGLING OR BURNING SHARP, SHOOTING PAIN MUSCLE WEAKNESS, CRAMPING LOSS OF BALANCE, COORDINATION DIFFICULTY WALKING When functioning normally, the peripheral nerves relay messages from the central nervous system, brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. However, this key function becomes disrupted by disease processes that may impair circulation to peripheral blood vessels, particularly the smaller ones (capillaries), which enter nerve tissues. Without sufficient blood flow making it through the capillaries, essential oxygen and nutrients cannot get into the nerve tissues while the waste products of metabolism cannot get out. The peripheral nervous system eventually becomes distressed and damaged due to starvation and toxicity.

MicroVas is a FDAcleared, advanced treatment option that delivers electromagnetic energy to the affected limb(s), stimulating increased circulation to the surrounding tissues. This innovative technology causes blood to pump and circulate much more efficiently by elevating tissue oxygen levels, laying the groundwork for new tissue growth and repair, while accelerating the healing process. Microvas therapy may also promote lymphatic drainage, notably reducing swelling in some instances and positively influencing the body’s immune response. In our experience, MicroVas’ therapeutic effects are often substantial and our unique approach of implementation including manual hands-on therapy and functional conditioning for strength and balance is designed to help you achieve optimal results for long-term relief. "My neuropathy had me miserable day and night and I had just learned to live with it. After five weeks of MicroVas treatments at Rehability, I'm already seeing a difference. They have given me hope and now I feel more motivated to stay active. Thanks so much." -David M. "Since starting treatment at Rehability, I've noticed less pain, tingling and burning sensations from the neuropathy and the MicroVas has made a big difference. Thank you for your kindness and patience." -Grace R. “We personally invite you to schedule a comprehensive evaluation to determine if you are a MicroVas candidate and to learn more about our EXCLUSIVE Neuropathy Program!” –The REHABILITY Team...We Can Help! *Most major medical insurances accepted, including Medicare.

Now running a business, she no longer makes cakes for customers, but the excitement she gets out of seeing her customers’ creations come to life is second to none. The Truth About Poop: Constipation & Hydrotherapy by

Vanessa Galati-Drew

Do you suffer from constipation on a regular basis? It’s not fun. And you’re not alone! Over four million people suffer from constipation in the United States, and roughly two million doctor visits a year make it one of the most common gastrointestinal issues today. Almost everyone, at one time, has been constipated. Constipation is a condition in which it is difficult, and even painful, to have a bowel movement. People suffering from constipation complain of hard or pellet-like stools, fewer than 3 bowel movements per week and straining with bowel movements. They normally feel bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish. The condition is often considered temporary and non-threatening; however, if it is undiagnosed or left untreated, it can lead to many other health issues. Medical problems that are caused by constipation include headaches, fatigue, moodiness and depression, hemorrhoids, anal fissures or tears, gas, lower back pain, skin problems, body odor, indigestion and abdominal pains. Accumulated toxins may be absorbed into the system and over time may stress the organs of elimination, which are the liver, kidneys, skin, and large intestine. The toxins move around and around in the lymph system and blood, slowly causing auto-intoxication, which then leads to disease. Traditionally, doctors typically prescribe laxatives, drugs or surgery for constipation relief. These methods will only temporarily treat the symptoms and there are many dangerous and harmful side effects that you may experience with these treatments.

One of the safest and most effective treatments of chronic constipation is colon hydrotherapy, a safe and gentle flow of warm, purified water into our large intestines without using pressure. This gentle internal bath assists your body in the natural detoxification process and is the safest and the most effective way to wake up your digestive system and get it working properly. Many people likely have years of impacted waste material in their colon. Colon hydrotherapy gently detoxifies and cleanses your system by moving the accumulated waste out of your body quickly, giving your body a chance to naturally refocus on rejuvenating itself. It will assist the body to eliminate pounds of unwanted toxic fecal matter and help to restore health and vitality to your entire body. By removing these toxic waste materials, the systems of your body, including the digestive and immune systems, are able to operate more effectively and efficiently. Cleansing the colon with colon hydrotherapy is an important part of the detoxing process because those toxins need to exit the body, and a backed-up colon can cause them to be reintroduced into the body, rather than exiting as planned. Sticking with fruits and vegetables even after the detox program is completed is a good way to keep things moving. Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of cancer-related death in U.S. A healthy, clean colon is the first step to achieving your optimal level of health! You don’t have to live with chronic constipation.

The Five Amazing Things That Happen When You Start Talking About Money.. Ladies, when was the last time you openly talked about money? About your budget? Savings? Retirement? A recent survey revealed that women are generally more comfortable talking about their kids, Botox, sex, fitness or death than their personal finances! In contrast, men start talking about salaries, stocks and investing at a much earlier age than women. Most of us women have been taught that the topic of money doesn’t make for polite conversation. Whether you are rich or poor, money can feel like a measure of self worth and a way to define yourself. It may also be an aspect of your life that you are not proud of or you feel lacks control. Money is an emotional topic that can stir up unexpected thoughts and feelings and if left undiscussed it can be the source of much anxiety. Here’s what can happen when you speak up..! You identify your unique money talk mindset: Money is such a taboo topic that it often takes a crisis for couples or families to discuss it openly. The reasons vary from person to person and are based on our unique set of beliefs about money which I refer to as the “money talk mindset”. Many factors contribute to the development of our money mindset including family money messages, culture, gender, generation, religion, socioeconomic status and personal financial experiences. By actively identifying your money mindset you can help change your conversations and investment behaviors. You enjoy more intimate and satisfying relationships: Money silence is ruining marriages and families, bankrupting businesses, and making it almost impossible for the next generation to be healthy around money. Fifty percent of first marriages end in divorce, with financial conflict often cited as the leading cause. Financial infidelity is on the rise with 42% of adults surveyed in 2016 (33% in 2014) admitting to financially cheating on their partner. Having an open conversation about money (without exercising passive aggressive behavior) can help establish better relationships and give you peace of mind.

You start raising a financially intelligent next generation: As a parent or a loving relative or mentor to a young person you can only teach what you know. If you were raised in the money silence, then it is challenging (but not impossible) to empower your children to talk about money and be financially intelligent. To raise a financially fit next generation, you may need to admit that you need to learn a few new things! Parents are influential role models for the next generation and it’s never too late or too early to engage your family in the money talk. You start raising financially fit parents: Seven in ten adults find it difficult to talk to their families about who will make financial decisions for an aging parent or relative. It is also common for parents to want to maintain control as they age. Learn techniques to respect this desire by approaching them with loving intent, at a quiet time, and in a manner that lets your parent maintain dignity. You learn more about your worth as a consumer: There has never been a time in U.S. history where women have been more economically powerful. Currently, women control over 50% of the personal wealth in the United States, act as primary or joint decision makers for $11.2 trillion in investable assets, and will control at least two thirds of the nation’s wealth by 2030! Even if you don’t bring home all the bacon, women make 85% of the buying decisions and are very influential in how family income is spent. Yes, women we are a financial force to be reckoned with! Given the U.S. has spectacularly low financial literacy rates, open discussions can be a key source of knowledge. That’s why I suggest attending finance workshops like my “Women, Wine & Wealth” series with your friends the same way you do, say fitness classes. So what is “Women, Wine & Wealth” series?: It's a regular meetup group designed primarily for women on how to speak up, communicate and participate in productive financial dialogues. It’s also for romantic partners, whether married or living together; for parents who want to raise financially fit children; and for adult children who want to talk about finances with their aging parents. There is no sales pitch – just helpful solutions on how to talk more openly about money & live a more fulfilling life.

Is It Snoring Or Is It Sleep Apnea? An interview with Dr. Christine Ally, a renowned sleep apnea doctor.

Christine Ally, DDS, FICOI Member, American Sleep and Breathing Academy Member, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Member, American Academy of Craniofacial Pain

What is Sleep Apnea?

Many people who snore may not simply be snoring but could be suffering from a more serious health condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Only about 10% of patients with the condition have been diagnosed. It is where a person stops breathing many times throughout the night and is caused by a physical blockage or collapse of the upper airway while asleep resulting in a chronic lack of oxygen to the brain and body. Over time it takes a toll on your body and causes or contributes to other significant and medical problems.

How does it affect our health?

Sleep apnea is called the silent killer and is a very serious condition which should not be taken lightly. If left untreated it damages your cardiovascular system and can cause high blood pressure, heart disease including arrhythmias, rapid heart rate, heart attacks and strokes. Other conditions related to sleep apnea include depression, mood disorders, memory loss, low sex drive, restless leg syndrome and acid reflux or GERD. Studies now show that in some cases a person can decrease their lifespan by as much as a decade if they have untreated sleep apnea.

What symptoms do people with sleep apnea have?

Symptoms depend on the severity of the condition and some patients may show none if their condition is mild, none the less it needs to be treated. The most frequent sign is loud snoring and sometimes gasping for air while sleeping. Other signs include waking frequently at night,

frequent leg movement while sleeping, irritability, lack of focus, loss of memory, morning headaches, day time sleepiness, low sex drive, obesity, chronic exhaustion and lack of energy.

How is Obstructive Sleep Apnea treated?

The most commonly prescribed therapy is CPAP. This is where a patient wears a mask and is hooked up to a machine blowing air continuously to keep the airway open while they are asleep. Most patients do not use CPAP because they find it uncomfortable and inconvenient. The more successful and compliant treatment is Oral Appliance Therapy. This is where a mouthpiece is custom made for the patient and it is worn while they sleep to keep the airway open.

How can you help patients?

I have successfully used oral appliances to treat patients with sleep apnea for over 14 years. Some patients need appliances for snoring and others for sleep apnea. They are custom made and are small, comfortable and easy to wear. Patients find them very convenient and they are a safe, simple and effective way of treating sleep apnea. Because of the comfort and convenience of the oral appliance patients are usually very compliant.

What should patients do if they suspect they have sleep apnea or they snore?

Any person who snores loudly should be screened for sleep apnea. I offer a free consult to discuss their concerns and work closely with local physicians to get them tested. If they have sleep apnea, our treatment is very personalized and we will discuss all their options and the best mode of treatment for them. If not we can make them a comfortable and easyto- wear appliance to relieve snoring.

Schedule a FREE CONSULTATION with Dr. Ally to learn about our comfortable and convenient sleep apnea treatment.

What To Expect After A Total Knee Replacement – A Physical Therapy Perspective Written by: Joel Maietta, DPT

Does the idea of a Total Knee Replacement scare you? While the thought of having a total knee replacement sounds daunting and arduous, there are many misconceptions regarding rehabilitation following the surgery. Often people run (not literally) from the idea of having this surgery because they hear horror stories of painful therapy sessions and a long grueling recovery period. However, with proper education, motivation, and the guidance of a skilled rehabilitation team, recovery should be nothing to worry about. Why do people need Total Knee Replacements? The primary reason people require a total knee replacement is to rid their knee of a painful condition called Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis develops when the smooth cartilage that cushions your joint starts to break down resulting in stiffness, pain, and that “grinding” sensation you feel in your knee. Unfortunately, our bodies are unable to reproduce adequate cartilage to repair the lost cushioning. As a result, a surgeon must often times perform surgery to replace these painful joint surfaces with artificial materials. This allows for the return of smooth, pain-free motion in your knee. What does rehabilitation consist of after a Total Knee Replacement? The key to a successful recovery is early exercise and activity to facilitate the healing process and prevent stiffness in the knee. Our bodies are amazing healers and immediately start repairing following the surgery with the production of scar tissue. However, movement directs the alignment of this new scar tissue, so the earlier and more often you begin moving, the easier your recovery will be! Therefore, the rehabilitation process begins right away in the hospital following surgery when a skilled physical therapist begins showing you the proper technique for getting out of bed, getting up from chairs, and even walking with the use of a walker! Many are surprised that these once painful activities now feel easier and more comfortable! Once the medical staff and rehabilitation team determine you can move around safely and have proper support at home you will be discharged from the hospital. Most people only end up staying in the hospital for a few days. In some cases, additional medical monitoring is needed and you may be placed in a rehabilitation hospital in which you will receive guided Physical and Occupational Therapy while under the supervision of doctors and nurses. This stay usually lasts a few days to a week and then you are allowed to return to your household. Once you have made it back to your home, your doctor may or may not request a therapist visit your home for a few days to continue with exercises and assist with daily activity training. Following a few home therapy sessions your doctor will direct you to begin Outpatient Physical Therapy at a facility of your choice.

How do I choose where to go for Physical Therapy following a Total Knee Replacement? When choosing a facility for this phase of rehabilitation, it is important to research your options by talking to doctors and previous patients to find the place that is right for you. Outpatient Physical Therapy is your final step to a full recovery and also the longest step. That being said, it is important to find a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and where all your goals and needs will be heard and attended to. What should I expect with my Outpatient Rehabilitation following a Total Knee Replacement? You will be spending 2-3 days a week in physical therapy for sessions lasting around one hour, however it is expected that you perform home exercises daily because the time spent in therapy alone is not enough for a full and functional recovery. In the facility, a skilled Physical Therapist will work with you to further improve your ability to straighten and bend your knee as well as progress the strength of your whole leg. The greatest gift therapists have is our hands and we have been educated and trained on specific techniques to improve the mobility of your knee to allow you to move with the least amount of pain possible. Once your mobility and strength start to improve, other activities are included to improve your ability to walk without any assistive devices as well as exercises to allow you to walk up and down stairs. Most people are able to walk without a cane or walker as early as 4-6 weeks after their surgery! Your Therapist will also discuss any additional goals you may have including returning to activities such as golf, tennis, and swimming. These are all realistic goals which can be attained with proper guidance by your Therapist. At All-Care Physical Therapy Center we specialize in innovative approaches to make your recovery from a Total Knee Replacement as painless and enjoyable as possible. Our friendly staff and skilled therapists will attend to your every need and get you back to your life, so fear not the dreaded Total Knee Replacement!

Patients Come First at All-Care Physical Therapy All-Care is not your average physical therapy facility. Besides being family owned, they are committed to treating each patient individually. Previous patients have said their care was nothing less than “exceptional.” Brothers Jim and Michael Yorke have always made their patients a priority. Jim adds, “We are a patient first organization. All the decisions made for the company are guided by optimizing patient care. In today’s world of corporate healthcare, it is essential not to lose focus on our ultimate mission; to restore lives.” When you combine that business modality with their family-like staff and positive atmosphere at their facility, it’s no wonder patients are satisfied. They also offer multiple services along what the Yorke brothers call the “Continuum of Care.” Michael adds, “This means that we can treat patients in their home, if needed, in comfortable and familiar surroundings; and then when they are able to, we can seamlessly transition them using our free transportation service to one of our eight outpatient facilities.”

outcomes while reducing pain levels. All of our therapists have been trained in the latest approaches to minimize pain and maximize recovery.

CW: Tell us about some of the benefits of being a regional training center for clinical students. Jim: As we have continued to expand, it has given us the opportunity to train the therapists of tomorrow through clinical education. In doing so, it helps our therapists stay up to date on the latest research and interventions taught in the top programs in the area. We regularly host students from some of the best Physical Therapy programs in the Tri-State area including Stockton University, Drexel University, and Rutgers/UMDNJ.

CW: Tell us about some of the successful therapy used for treating arthritic conditions.

Jim and Michael Yorke

CW: What is the benefit of having your therapists be autonomous? Why has this been successful for you?

Jim: Through autonomous care, a therapist is able to make clinical decisions based upon their extensive knowledge for what is best for their patient. As a company, we respect each therapist’s background and education. Allowing the therapist to make clinical decisions and assess progress creates better patient outcomes and contributes to their overall experience.

CW: Please explain the importance of treating the emotional part of recovery.

Mike: It is essential to address all aspects of recovery and we believe strongly in the continuity of care, meaning pairing every patient with one therapist. This allows the therapist to establish a strong bond with their patients and address any emotional barriers of recovery. Emotional barriers are important because we believe there is a direct correlation between chronic pain and depression. If the mental part is not addressed, recovery will be unsuccessful or short lived.

CW: What are some positive changes you have seen in the field in the last ten years?

Mike: There has been great progress in the manual (literally, hands-on) approaches used by physical therapists over the last ten years. Addressing soft tissue through Instrument Assisted Mobilization (IASTM) as well as improving range of motion through joint mobilization is essential to achieving optimal

Mike: As the baby boomer generation enters into their 60’s and beyond, we have noticed an increase in the diagnosis and incidence of arthritic conditions. In our model of physical therapy, we address restoring joint health through manual techniques and applicable modalities. Many people feel as if arthritic conditions are untreatable; well that is absolutely not true. There are a number of noninvasive treatments that not only reduce, but also alleviate arthritic pain.

CW: What is the one common characteristic that all staff members exhibit throughout the organization?

Jim: Our company is filled with people that demonstrate true compassion. It is essential for us to be invested in our patients’ recovery. Additionally, we look for individuals that are always seeking to improve their clinical skills and grow within the organization. Because physical therapy is an ever-changing field, it is essential to keep up with the latest interventions so that we can help more patients.

CW: What would you like All-Care to be known for as a company?

Mike: I would like All-Care to be known for providing the best overall physical therapy experience. Personnel in all positions are able to participate in the rehabilitation of patients. At the end of the day, knowing that we are helping individuals restore their lives, as well as furthering the field of physical therapy is a top priority for All-Care.

CW: Tell us about the dynamics of working with your family.

Jim: Working with family has been a rewarding experience on so many levels. Our father and stepmother have been a huge part of our success and continue to consult with us regularly. Their perspective has been invaluable in understanding our patient’s point of view, which has shaped our company’s decisions and values.

Demystifying Acupuncture To some people, acupuncture, is new and mysterious even though it has been around more than 3,000 years. These common questions may demystify this topic: Q: Is acupuncture safe? A: When acupuncture is performed by a licensed acupuncturist, the risk of harm is low and acupuncture is one of the safer forms of medical intervention. In New Jersey, acupuncturists attend an accredited 3-4 year graduate level program with over 2,500 hours of instruction studying anatomy, physiology, pathology, Asian medicine theory and diagnosis, as well as the application of several modalities including acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, eastern nutrition and qi gong/tai chi. Acupuncturist are trained in clean needle technique and sharps disposal. Most states, including New Jersey, require that all applicants for licensure also become nationally board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Q: Can acupuncture help with my condition? A: In 2003, the World Health Organization released a report about the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of a variety of medical issues. Since then, there have been over 13,000 studies conducted in 60 countries as research into acupuncture as a medical treatment. Some conditions where acupuncture has a positive effect are low back pain, allergic rhinitis, headache, post-operative pain, anxiety, asthma, insomnia, constipation. Both the American College of Physicians and the Joint Commission on Pain have recommended that acupuncture be utilized as a first line therapy to alleviate pain, including back pain. Q: How many treatments will I need? A: The number of visits will vary depending on a person’s individual situation. Some of the factors that can help shape a treatment plan are: the severity of the condition, the length of time a person has had the condition and the overall health of the person receiving treatment. Usually, chronic conditions take longer to resolve than acute conditions. Q: Does acupuncture hurt? A: The needles used for an acupuncture treatment are very fine. They are about the gauge of a cat’s whisker or two strands of hair. They are filiform needles, solid and made of stainless steel; unlike hypodermic needles used to give vaccines or draw blood which are hollow and cut through the skin making them significantly more painful. Most people feel that acupuncture is relatively painless and enjoy the relaxation of the overall experience. However, for some there can be a slight sensation when the needle is first inserted but once in place there should not be pain. If you are nervous about needles or concerned there may be discomfort, discuss this with your acupuncturist so that they may help to alleviate your fears and help to create a relaxed space for your treatment. Q: Does insurance cover acupuncture? A: Many insurance plans cover acupuncture services. Call the insurance company for information involving your specific plan. Ask about in-network and out-of-network coverage. Some practitioners may not participate with your insurance. Important question to ask are: Is there a deductible? How many visits are allowed? Is a referral required? Does your plan only cover specific diagnosis? As always, it best to discuss your specific condition with a provider who can determine the best course of treatment for you as an individual. We currently offer acupuncture in our Jackson and Old Bridge locations. To make an appointment, call 732-263-7999. — By Eleonora Bowers, Licensed Acupuncturist

So I Have DVT? (Deep Venous Thrombosis) Girija Surya, M.D.

Board Certified in Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery

Hi Friends, A few years ago, while making rounds in the hospital, I was asking for a nurse on the floor. She was a beautiful, young woman in her early 40s, a committed nurse and a mother of 2 young children. I was shocked and saddened to hear that she had died of Pulmonary Embolism (PE) from an undiagnosed Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). When you know the person, it hits you harder. Many people are not lucky to receive treatment. Approximately 200,000 deaths occur each year in U.S. of the 600,000 cases of P.E. Statistics show that every year 2 million individuals suffer Venous Thrombotic event. It is important to know that 2 out of 3 deaths can be prevented and Venous Thrombosis (VTE) remains the leading cause of preventable hospital deaths. Public awareness of VTE is improving but continues to still be far from where we should be. A telephone survey of 1000 people revealed that 95 percent of them had never been told about DVT from their physician.

Surgical Treatment of DVT:

In past articles, I have explained about DVT, prevention protocols recommended, and medical treatment with intravenous anticoagulation with heparin, or outpatient subcutaneous injection of low molecular weight heparin and Coumadin. Today we will discuss the techniques that are available to treat DVT. DVT untreated can lead to not only PE, but also PTS (Post Thrombotic Syndrome) and Chronic Secondary Pulmonary Hypertension secondary to chronic untreated PE.

Post Thrombotic Syndrome:

PTS is a debilitating chronic condition following DVT, in fact, in almost 75 percent of patients treated with anticoagulants. This causes edema, pain, skin pigmentation, itching and complications of cellulitis and ulcer. Standard treatment of DVT, after starting initial anticoagulation, is to use graded compression stockings. In addition, Catheter Directed Treatment (CDT), which includes thrombolytics and mechanical thrombectomy, use newly developed devices. At the same time, to correct the underlying venous abnormality, such as narrowing, using balloon angioplasty and possible use of stents, can resolve the edema by correcting the venous and lymphatic pressure in the affected leg.

1 cm further than the catheter tip. Thrombolytic agent is delivered through the catheter, and ultrasound is delivered through a mobile unit to deliver US energy. The ultrasound breaks up the clot and the clot is dissolved with TPA.

Venous Stenting and Angioplasty:

The absolute indications are source: http://www.sirweb.org/images/patients/DVT_clot_illustration.gif still debatable. This procedure is done when there is significant residual stenosis or narrowing of the vein is present after thrombolysis. This is diagnosed with venography or IVUS, which is a venous ultrasound, performed from inside the vein. IVUS can be used to see the correction of the stenosis after placing stent, and angioplasty. This can be followed by a traditional IV heparin and Coumadin.

Complications:

Minor bleeding at puncture site. Major bleeding requiring blood transfusion is possible, and bleeding usually is seen in brain, reteoperitoneum, muscles and urinary tract or gastrointestinal system.

Pulmonary Embolisms:

In some cases, the broken clots can cause acute PE. These emboli are treated by the thrombolysis and anticoagulation. No fatal P.E. has been reported, however about 30 percent patients undergoing CDT can show distal emboli. This raises the question of placement of filters for prophylaxis, but the indications for filter in cases of CDT still evolving. The recommendation from ACCP is however for standard anticoagulation at this time, over CDT, awaiting further results. There is a new trial – results of which are awaited. “ATRACT” – trial, from which more evidence would evolve regarding catheter, directed thrombolysis. The current practice ideally would be aggressive management including CDT in younger patients and being a little more conservative in older age group, selecting treatment tailored to the patient.

v

Love Your Legs Again!! Vein Center for Women

Catheter Directed Thrombolysis:

While the first line of treatment for DVT remains anticoagulation, 13 studies involving iliac and femoral veins showed resolution only in 10 percent of patients. The objective of restoring venous flow is to prevent valve damage, venous hypertension and recovering from DVT, without developing PTS. The following circumstances are when CDT is recommended: Acute iliac and femoral vein DVT, less than 14 days from onset of symptoms, or acute findings on venous ultrasound, in patients with life expectancy of more than 1 year with good functional status, and low risk of bleeding. However, cases with some deviation from above have also been treated with success. In general, a catheter with multi-side holes is positioned in the thrombus, usually for 24 hours, and parked in the area to deliver thrombolytics (TPA)-[the strong agent used to dissolve clots in heart attacks, strokes etc,] through the catheter directly to the thrombus. The vein is evaluated with a venogram in 12 hrs. and then the catheter is removed. Patient is then treated with iv heparin and oral anticoagulants such as Coumadin. With these procedures, there is risk of bleeding with the thrombolytic therapy but only has been seen in 11 percent cases in some trials.

Understanding The Term ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome’ Written by Dr. Omar Tamini, Gastroenterologists of Ocean County

Do you know where every bathroom facility is movements with resulting pain and cramping? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in very good company

Disorders that can mimic or cause similar symptoms to IBS include: infections, (gluten sensitivity), Lactose Intolerance and Colon Cancer and other abdominal cancers. To exclude these disorders, when signs and symptoms are present, physicians will often perform blood and stool tests as well as place patients on selective diets. Colonoscopy is often necessary to exclude Colon Cancer or Colitis. Only once these more serious conditions have been excluded by patient history and necessary exams can patients be reassured of the diagnosis and treatment recommended.

Should I Be Concerned? If your symptoms include bleeding, weight loss, bowel movements that wake you from sleep, oily stools or new symptoms presenting later in life, than it is urgent that you see your doctor right away to have appropriate evaluation as these may be symptoms of much more serious conditions. But even if you do not have these alarm symptoms, you should seek medical advice for treatment of IBS if you suspect you How Is IBS treated?

Ultrasounds ... Of The Feet? Ultrasound imaging is a very common way to image the inside of the body. It is a quick and painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the body. It uses no radiation, which makes it safe enough to use on pregnant women and their unborn babies. Ultrasound technology is also used to image the organs of the abdomen and pelvis as well as to give a clear picture of the blood vessels. More frequently, we are using ultrasounds to take images of the feet. Q: What can the ultrasound show us in the feet? A: The ultrasound is excellent at imaging the tendons of the feet. Tendons

are in the ends of muscles that attach to the bone. The tendons surround the foot and this allows us to move the foot in every direction. The tendons can get damaged and cause foot pain. Sometimes surgery needs to be performed to correct a torn tendon. Ultrasound is also commonly used to image the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is fibrous tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes. The plantar fascia can get inflamed, causing pain usually at the heel. This is called plantar fasciitis. Ultrasound can detect plantar fasciitis and its level of severity. Ultrasound is a great tool at imaging the Achilles tendon (also called the Achilles heel). This large tendon is located at the back of your heel and attaches to the bone in the back of your foot. It can become inflamed

and painful (called Achilles tendinitis). In some cases, the Achilles tendon can tear. Depending on how badly the tendon is ruptured, it may require surgery to repair.

Q: What else besides tendons can the ultrasound image? A: Anything abnormal in the soft tissue can be seen by ultrasound. It can be

used to detect collections of fluid, such as pools of blood from bruising or an abscess from an infection. There is a condition called Morton’s neuroma. This occurs when there is thickening of tissue around the nerves. This is located at the balls of your feet, usually at the level of the third and fourth toes. This can be very painful. Many patients describe the sensation of having a rock in their shoe. An ultrasound examination can usually find a Morton’s neuroma and help guide the surgeon to remove it.

Q: Can the ultrasound see the bone of the foot? Can it see arthritis? A: Unfortunately, ultrasound is limited in imaging bones. The dense calcium

Normal appearing plantar fascia.

of bone blocks the sounds waves and we only see a shadow. That is why a foot ultrasound is often interpreted with a foot x-ray.

Q: How is the test performed? A: The shoes and socks are removed.

The patient is then asked to either lie down on a table or sit with both feet dangling off the table. Warm gel is applied to the foot and the technologist uses the ultrasound probe to take pictures of the area of concern.

The plantar fascia looks dark and thickened consistent with plantar fasciitis.

Original Medicare vs Medicare Advantage Deborah Walsh,

Executive Director, HomeWorks

Millions of seniors rely on Medicare to cover their healthrelated needs. But Medicare isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Those who enroll in original Medicare will generally get free coverage under Part A, which pays for hospital visits. You can then opt in to Part B, which covers preventative care and diagnostics. Part D covers prescription drugs. But there is an alternative to Medicare that many seniors choose instead: it’s Part C, otherwise known as Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage essentially bundles all your coverage needs into a single plan. You pay a premium but often Advantage plans end up being less expensive than original Medicare, offering at least the same level of coverage, if not more. In fact, many seniors choose Advantage over traditional Medicare because Advantage covers dental, hearing and vision, and changes to Medicare Advantage set to take place in 2019 make it an even more attractive choice. Many Advantage plans also offer coverage overseas. Effective January 2019, Medicare Advantage plans will have the option to cover things like transportation to and from medical appointments and meal delivery to seniors’ homes. Also, plans will be able to offer enrollees coverage for home safety features such as ramps and bathroom/shower support bars. These new benefits lower the chances of injury, so if you’re experiencing mobility issues, it may pay to see how an Advantage plan might help. In addition to these added benefits, soon Medicare Advantage plans will be able to offer home care coverage for seniors who need help with personal

care at home as well as things like cooking, cleaning and errands. This is a big change and one that the home care industry has been advocating for many years. This new benefit supports seniors who wish to age in place comfortably and safely in their own home.

There are plenty of good reasons to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan for 2019. Starting this year, a new open enrollment period for Advantage will kick off on January 1st and run all the way through March 31st. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll have the option at that time to move from one plan to another. Be sure to research different plans to determine which one is best for you or your loved one.

Hypnosis for Women Professional Hypnosis & Coaching Rhoda Kopy, Director 1541 Rt. 37 East, Suite E Toms River, NJ 08753 732-270-0080 www.HypnoForWomen.com

Make Your Mind Work FOR You – Instead of Against You! Rhoda Kopy is a nationally certified consulting hypnotist and wellness coach, with specialty certification in complementary medical hypnotism. She earned a B.S. degree in Biomedical Communications from Richard Stockton College of N.J., has an academic background in nursing, and 20+ years’ experience in community health education and coaching. Rhoda adheres to strict ethical standards of the National Guild of Hypnotists.

In the past, it wasn’t unusual for hypnosis practitioners to hear clients say, “Hypnosis is my last hope. I’ve tried everything, but nothing has helped me.” Today, however, many people – including health care professionals – recognize that it is an effective, empowering, and holistic approach. And it generally achieves results in three to six sessions. It’s no longer considered an approach of last resort. People seek hypnosis services for many reasons: To eat healthier, stop smoking, stress less, overcome a fear, boost confidence, sleep better, etc. Think about times that you desperately wanted to make a change in your life, but just couldn’t do it. You may have been aware of the actions you needed to take to reach your goal, but you kept reverting to the old negative patterns. Relying on logic and common sense often isn’t enough to make changes. By tapping - to interrupt into the subconscious, hypnosis helps those patterns and develop newer, smarter ones. It makes challenges much easier to surmount and helps develop a sense of empowerment. Unfortunately, misconceptions about hypnosis prevent some people from seeking services that could benefit them. Sometimes stage shows, along with movies and TV programs, depict hypnosis in a bizarre fashion, in an attempt to be entertaining. So it’s not surprising that misinformed individuals may equate hypnosis with mind control, a zombie-like state, sleep, or unconsciousness – all of which are incorrect. Hypnosis actually brings about a heightened state of awareness, while relaxing the body and helping the subconscious mind to be more receptive to positive suggestions. There is no surrender of control; and no one can be forced to do, say, or think anything that runs counter to his or her beliefs and values. In this state, people are more receptive to suggestions in harmony with their values and goals.

Hypnosis For Women ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀

Weight Control Smoking Cessation Relaxation/Comfort Fear Release

In addition to helping people reach their goals, hypnosis offers side benefits. Most clients report that it helps them feel more centered and empowered, and has a positive impact on sleep quality. While this approach is very effective, it’s not for everyone – and it’s not a magic bullet. Most practitioners, during a preliminary phone discussion, are able to determine if this approach is suitable for a prospective client. It works best for people who: 1) Are motivated to change 2) Believe that with the right tools and techniques they are capable of changing 3) Understand that this is a process 4) Are willing to be a partner in the process Hypnosis services are not a replacement for licensed medical or mental health care. If you need help with a significant health issue, seek appropriate assistance. Consulting hypnotists often work in tandem with health care providers, as this approach helps improve focus and clarity, and helps clients adhere to their practitioners’ recommendations. It’s important to be selective in choosing a hypnosis practitioner. Look for professionals who are certified by reputable organizations like the National Guild of Hypnotists and/or the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association. Both require specific training, continuing education, and adherence to ethical standards. Find someone who seems interested in helping you, communicates openly, and addresses your concerns. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to ask questions. For a Free Phone Consultation, call me at 732-270-0080. Integrating hypnotic techniques and coaching paves the way for successful outcomes and boosts your sense of well-being.

Wigs & Hair Replacement

35

Are You Ready For Shedding Season? All body cells, skin and hair cells are constantly renewed. New hairs replace those that fall out on a daily basis. Humans lose a lot of hair during a certain time of the year, which is similar to the shedding season for animals: Fall – mid September to mid November; Spring – mid March to mid May. This hair loss may be temporarily heavier (max 3 months). During transitions between seasons, it is normal to see more loss of hair than at other times. The falling hairs are replaced by new hairs. People who have a hereditary disposition to baldness or hair loss could lose more hair per day during the shedding season. They will be recycled at a percentage determined by their hereditary disposition.

Even if you have a full head of hair, it may be time to take your scalp health into consideration. We have solutions for the most common problems and conditions that can effect your scalp. • Itching

• Hair Loss in Women • Dandruff • Hair Loss in Men

• Oily Hair

• Radiotherapy

• Dry Hair & Scalp

• Skin Inflammation

• Chemotherapy

• Pregnancy

• Localized Hair Loss • Scaly Plaques

The shedding season is an ideal time for scalp analysis and treatments. Treatments will help open the follicular funnels and help the scalp get rid of residues (medication and/or product build-up). As a result the shedding season will be shorter and the scalp will be entirely purified, which will then allow the scalp and hair to absorb all the vital, natural nutrients and vitamins for your hair’s optimal and healthy growth cycle.

“Organization isn’t about perfection; it’s about efficiency, reducing stress and clutter, saving time and money and improving your overall quality of life.” - Christina Scalise

“There’s a lot of stress out there, and to handle it, you just need to believe in yourself. Always go back to the person that you know you are and don’t let anybody tell you any different, because everyone’s special and everyone’s awesome.” “Stress is something that’s created - McKayla Maroney in the mind, basically. Moms Of Business is a community that uplifts, educates and empowers one another online and in person.

Moms Of Business was founded in August of 2018 by local mom entrepreneur, Sarah Williams. After getting married and having her two children, Gwendolyn is 4 and Bradley is 2. Sarah found herself wanting more...more for herself, more for her kids, & more for her marriage

We are a dynamic family of Mom entrepreneurs and business owners across the nation ranging in ages from 25-60 all with either children or stepchildren.

Simply by asking for help in a local Facebook group, it was clear that she was not alone. It was the wanting for a sense of community over competition that really was the core of it all!!

Not only do we strive to educate and empower one another through our Facebook groups and resourceful website, but we're all about having fun, making new friends and growing our businesses.

The idea of combining and harnessing the various expertise all of us moms could share was astounding. Sarah knew she was ready to jump and start her own group, on terms that she knew would allow others to shine.

Our community is based on respect, integrity, generosity, and humility. We have several events every month across New Jersey where we feature our VIP MOBsters at Night's Out, Business Workshops, Vendor Events and so much more.

The ability to embrace and empower others is a special gift that Sarah has mastered and it is now an integral part of the culture in the MOB community.

Get involved and become a VIP member for only $10 or $20 a month and discover what it really means to #beconnected!!

Working in Corporate Marketing & PR not only requires time in the office, but many nights out at events and schmoozing. I had my son and quickly became pregnant with daughter afterward and realized that I wanted a lifestyle change. With my extensive strategy experience I always ‘made the plan’ and decided to learn to fully execute the tech side. I sat at my kitchen counter, babe on boob, and learned to code. This was the start of a digital lifestyle for me where I apply real-world tactics, because there are humans behind the screen, with tech know-how to help female entrepreneurs move their businesses forward.

Besides running the MOB Network, she is also the founder/owner of Sarah’s Strategies, a specialty coaching business focusing on Facebook success, MLM team building as well as confidence & sales strategies.

Be you! You will find your voice through that and attract the right customers to you. Its great to follow people and listen to industry advice, but you need to tweak it for you and your brand. There is no cookie cutter formula that works! Listen to your customers, they will tell you what they want and what words to use to market yourself. From truly hearing your audience you can get ideas to create new products or services as well as know just what to say to connect with them. Keep an on-going note on your phone of things you find online and in conversation that your customers say.

Rebecca Kolas, Certified Lice Technician and Owner, Lice Lifters of Ocean County Rebecca Kolas is both a Certified Lice Technician and Owner of Lice Lifters of Ocean County in Toms River, which opened in August 2016 and serves Ocean, Monmouth and Atlantic Counties as the premier lice removal company. Since that time she has opened a second location, Lice Lifters Central Jersey in Hamilton which serves Mercer, Middlesex, and Burlington Counties. Rebecca was introduced to the Lice Lifters franchise when her two youngest children contracted lice. Trying over the counter and prescription medication, she was unable to conquer lice, which have become resistant to the harmful pesticides, chemicals and toxins contained in those products. Rebecca was then introduced to Lice Lifters as a customer and found that it was the only treatment that was successful, as well as safe and natural. A true believer of the Lice Lifters franchise and its product, Rebecca knew she wanted to deliver this service to the people of the Jersey Shore and to help others afflicted with unwanted head lice. She truly understands the needs and fears of her customers, having been a customer herself, and takes the time to educate and calm others during the stress of dealing with lice. Rebecca resides in Ocean County with her husband and five children. When not at Lice Lifters, she serves as a staff attorney for a local non-profit organization. Lauren Maria Brennan, BS, MBA, Certified Health Coach and Aromatherapist Owner/Coach at Purely Lauren Health Coaching and Aromatherapy

I always loved science and helping others. I majored in psychology and biological sciences in college, intending to go to medical school to become a psychiatrist. Then life got in the way. I got married, worked as a materials manager and had an amazing daughter. Fastforward 30-plus years and I found myself still working in corporate America and anything but healthy. It is still really hard for me to look at pictures of myself from 2015 when I weighed around 234 lbs. After 3 years, my body is still a work in progress. I have lost over 85 lbs. I have eliminated toxins from my life, eat as organically as possible and work out daily. I became a health coach and aromatherapist because I truly just want to share with others what I learned from my 45-year struggle with my weight and low self-esteem. My programs are not fad diets or panaceas. They require a lot of hard work and commitment. You are not required to purchase any products or prepackaged foods you don’t like. I also can help if you need health, wellness or body-image programs for your pets or children. I can help you change your lifestyle and achieve optimal health by staying motivated and accountable. Believe me, if I can do it, you can too! Private and group coaching essentials tailored to your specific needs and goals. AXELROD PAC PRESENTS “MAMMA MIA!” The Hit Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA

Mamma Mia!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will feature four Broadway veterans, including Matt Bogart (Jersey Boys), when it premieres at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, running March 8-24. Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with Mamma Mia! The longest-running jukebox musical in Broadway history, with nearly 6,000 performances, it has played in 50 countries and inspired two major motion pictures. This singing and dancing extravaganza is the story of a young woman’s search for her birth father—it features a hilarious web of relationships between a mother, a daughter, three possible dads, and an unforgettable trip down the aisle. ABBA’s signature 1980s score, including the title song and hits like “The Winner Takes It All,” “Dancing Queen,” “SOS,” and “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” make Mamma Mia! one of Broadway’s most entertaining musicals of all time. The Axelrod production is the first on the Jersey Shore and is being directed and choreographed by the legendary Barry Ivan. Artistic Director Andrew DePrisco, whose guidance and vision has transformed the Axelrod PAC into one of the most talked-about professional theaters in the state, is thrilled to welcome Ivan and his team to the production. A nationally recognized director and choreographer, whose career includes work in the New York theater as well as TV and film, Ivan’s long resume of New York and regional credits includes many of the top theaters in the nation. “I look forward to bringing this production of Mamma Mia! to audiences at the Axelrod,” said Ivan. “It’s guaranteed to make you ‘dance, jive and have the time of your life,’ while at the same time, illustrate how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.” Matt Bogart, whose recent appearances on Broadway include leading roles in Jersey Boys, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Miss Saigon, will make his Jersey Shore debut starring as Sam. “We’ve never assembled a cast with so many stars,” said DePrisco. “Matt Bogart is one of the go-to leading men on Broadway, and all three female leads have Broadway credits.” Playing Sam’s ex-wife, Donna, is Michelle Mallardi, whose Broadway career started in fairy-tale fashion as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Playing Sophie, her daughter, is Sarah Lasko, the Dorothy from the spectacular national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz. Her fiancé, Sky, will be played by a promising University of Michigan actor, Charlie Patterson. In addition to Mallardi as Donna, her best girlfriends, Tanya and Rosie, will be played by Doreen Montalvo (In the Heights and On Your Feet) and Heather Jane Rolff (Shrek), respectively. The production team features Broadway lighting designer Paul Miller (Legally Blonde and Amazing Grace), musical supervisor James Cunningham, music director/conductor Garrett Taylor, sound designer D.J. “For an evening or afternoon of feel-good entertainment, nothing beats Mamma Mia! Who can resist an ABBA tune? Few shows leave the audience literally dancing in the aisles,” says DePrisco. “We’re perfectly aware that Mamma Mia! is the height of fluff, but we’re giving this the Broadway treatment, and let’s face it, even the ancient Greeks did a comedy once in a while!” To purchase individual tickets, visit www.axelrodartscenter.com or call the box office at (732) 531-9106 ext. 14. Ticket prices for Mamma Mia! are: Premium Adult: $64, Regular Adult: $58, Premium Senior: $56, Regular Senior: $50. Group and student discounts are available.

Why Cord Blood Banking? My name is Maureen Lynn and I am a local mother of four teenagers. I have over 20 years of nursing experience in women’s health. I grew up in Fair Haven and reside in Red Bank. Mary Street is a mother of two young children and is from Toms River. Mary had been working as a Clinical Field Specialist for Natera, a genetic lab, when we met. She was the representative who called on the midwife practice where I worked and coordinated non-invasive prenatal screening (Panorama) and carrier screening for my patient population. We continued to work together when I accepted a position as a nurse manager for another OB/GYN practice, and eventually Mary made me aware of a position in Natera that sparked my interest. I was hired last year as an Account Service Representative with Natera, and Mary and I work closely to service the prenatal population in Monmouth County, and parts of Ocean and Middlesex Counties. One part of my position that I am extremely passionate about is to promote Evercord, our cord blood banking division in Natera. Cord blood and tissue are valuable, natural resources of stem cells that contain powerful healing capabilities. The cells in cord blood act like a repair kit and can help to heal and restore tissues and replenish cells. When you cryogenically freeze newborn stem cells, it preserves them while they are young and untouched. These cells can be beneficial to future medical therapies. Newborn stem cells have been used in more than 35,000 transplants worldwide for therapies that treat nearly 80 diseases. Most people associate stem cells with only transplants, but currently, there are studies going on that show great improvements in children with autism and cerebral palsy after stem cell infusions. Science is progressing, and the regenerative abilities of newborn stem cells are also being evaluated in conditions like diabetes, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer’s. Parents can spend hours on the internet trying to decipher the science vs. marketing of cord blood banking. We offer monthly free Evercord dinners that give parents the opportunity to enjoy a nice dinner and meet some other expectant parents, all while learning all there is to know about cord blood banking and this great family investment. Our events are fun, interactive, and informative, and we always have an experienced medical provider speaking to the attendees along with staff from Natera who are well versed in Evercord. Patients are generally so thankful for the education as they decide if they will bank their baby’s cord blood, and usually are very happy with the pricing, payment plans, and discounts they receive for attending our dinner event. Natera really does make cord blood banking an attainable, affordable option, which surprises most attendees. Our dinners are monthly, alternating southern and northern Monmouth County locations. Our next event is March 27, 2019 at Salt Creek Grill in Rumson. Robert Penney, MD, from Holmdel OB/GYN will be our guest speaker that evening. Dr. Penney is extremely passionate about cord blood banking and engages the parents and really does an amazing job answering questions. As we try to spread awareness to the public on the benefits of cord blood banking, we invite any pregnant Mom and a guest to attend. Anyone interested can contact Maureen Lynn at 732-757-9385 to register or email Mlynn@natera.com.
