SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE FUTURE

During Summer 2020 we will undertake The Courtyard Capital Expansion Project, part-funded by a grant from Arts Council England and supported by Herefordshire Council.

This exciting development will set the stage for our future, transforming our much-loved venue to improve customer experience, increase accessibility and enable us to reach even more people with our creative community work.

We’ve worked with over 28,000 school children in the last 11 years and delivered projects with over 90% of Herefordshire schools.

arge first floor multi-function L rehearsal and performance space New accessible entrance and retail space incorporating Box Office Café Bar expansion and refurbishment Outdoor terrace on the first floor alongside an extended Mezzanine

Our community has given an amazing 210,000 volunteer hours.

What's changing?

Why do we need to do this? Being at the heart of our community means using arts, culture and entertainment to improve health, wellbeing and social isolation. Providing access to the arts for all, helping to build relationships and growing talent is the reason our charity exists. The additional space will enable The Courtyard’s ever increasing learning and participation work to flourish further and we can continue to bring our community together.

More than 7,000 young people have benefited from our Youth Theatre programme.

WE NEED YOUR HELP We are so excited to extend our fabulous building and have even more to offer to our community. Our ambitions have no limits but our resources do… and we need your help.

What we're doing...

We’ve seen a 44% reduction in carbon emissions since we started measurements in 2010. The Courtyard has an active staff Eco Group who implement and monitor our action plan. We operate a zero waste to landfill policy.

The Courtyard has joined forces with other arts and cultural organisations in the UK and Herefordshire Council to declare a Climate and Ecological Emergency and is calling on others to do the same.

olar panels were installed on our roof S in 2015 which generate 10% of our total electrical energy consumption.

WHY?

ur catering team work to increase the O amount of produce we source locally.

In October 2018 the world’s leading climate scientists warned that we have only 12 years to make the necessary changes to how we live if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate breakdown. Beyond this, the risks of extreme heat, drought, floods and poverty for hundreds of millions of people significantly worsen. This is an emergency that requires an urgent response from everyone at all levels of our society. Business as usual is no longer an appropriate response.

WHY CULTURE? Culture convenes - Culture gives space to articulate our place and survival in the web of life. Culture renews and transforms - The arts have a tradition of sparking cultural change and ‘speaking differently’: disrupting the status quo and creating emergent space for new ideas to engage people at an imaginative level. Culture builds capacities for action - Participation is key to many of today’s cultural and arts practices; building creative skills, lost crafts, and learning through doing and engaging. Culture lets us learn - Being bold, active players in this great reimagining is why and how culture matters.

WHY US? There is a growing recognition of the contribution of arts organisations to raise awareness of climate change and to model practical responses. Over the past few years we have measured and taken significant action to reduce our own environmental impact. We want to champion awareness in Herefordshire and our local community. Our extensive work with the young people of Herefordshire makes this issue particularly pertinent.

Take Actions We will actively work to imagine and model AD ST practice and share environmentally sustainable our learning through the Hereford Cultural Partnership. We will ensure that our centre is an open space for our local community to share creative conversations – with artists, audiences and communities – around positive action. 3.
