The Courtyard Hereford Live Guide May - Aug 2025

Page 1

WELCOME

I am thrilled to share with you all our vibrant and exciting Summer programme. This season we will be bringing you an array of fabulous shows including the return of one of the most influential bands in British roots music and pioneers of folkrock, the legendary Steeleye Span. After their sellout performance in 2024, Orchestra of the Swan will return to our stage with star of TV and Screen, Anton Lesser. Plus, do not miss our line-up of exceptional comedians, including Joel Dommett, Rich Hall, Julian Clary and Marcus Brigstock.

In July, our extremely talented Senior Youth Theatre will perform an adaptation of Animal Farm. This tense, thought-provoking reimagining of George Orwell’s classic is not to be missed. This is certainly a programme that has something for everyone and is guaranteed to see many shows selling out very quickly, so don’t delay and book your tickets to secure your seats.

As you may know, the past year has seen The Courtyard embark on a significant fundraising campaign to enable us to install new LED lighting into the auditoria at a cost of nearly £400,000. I am delighted to let you know that we have been extremely successful in our campaign and the installation will take place throughout August 2025.

On behalf of us all at The Courtyard, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has helped us achieve this incredible milestone and to acknowledge the support from our patrons, friends, customers, board, youth board, staff, stewards, volunteers, community theatre groups and the casts of Sleeping Beauty and Elves and the Shoemaker. Our campaign was very generously supported by; Garfield Weston Foundation, Foyle Foundation, Bernard Sunley Foundation, Clive Richards Foundation, The Brailsford Charity and Theatres Trust.

Thank you for being part of the community that makes The Courtyard a special place for the arts in Herefordshire. We look forward to sharing many more unforgettable performances and experiences with you.

Very best wishes,

Senior youth theatre presents Animal Farm

Directed by KAte Ross

In this electrifying stage adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, The Courtyard’s Senior Youth Theatre expose the brutal mechanics of power and revolution.

When the animals of Manor Farm overthrow their oppressive owner, they dream of a life of freedom. Little do they know that the pursuit of equality often breeds new forms of tyranny. As the pigs gradually assume leadership, their revolutionary ideals slowly corrupt. Led by the cunning Napoleon, they manipulate language, rewrite history, and betray the revolution’s original principles.

Through razor-sharp performances, this next generation of young talent will go on a gripping exploration of power, corruption and the fragility of hope.

Animal Farm speaks to the heart of today’s world, where promises of change can quickly turn into a cycle of manipulation and control.

A daring, thought-provoking modern retelling that will leave you questioning who holds the reins in a society that claims to be free… £8OR£10

simon Carroll Hereford's ceramicist

Simon Carroll (1964-2009) was a British studio potter from Hereford. An unconventional and adventurous artist, Carroll produced some of the most singular and extraordinary ceramics of recent years. He has a permanent collection at the V&A Museum London and these pieces have been loaned to The Courtyard from the V&A for an exclusive exhibition. Characterised by extremes in the handling of clay and by bold and vigorous mark-making, his pottery has an affinity with abstract expressionism.

Friday 8 August - Saturday 6 September

Charlie Hurcombe and Sarah Bagshaw

Sarah and Charlie both studied Fine Art painting at Falmouth. Although their separate practices have continued to explore abstract concerns there has recently been an unplanned coming together of ideas and artworks. A shared interest in collage and assemblage, the use of ‘found’ and recycled materials together with the use of vibrant colour have all been realised and made visible through their individual, distinct and independent practices.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS

In October 2024, CEO Ian Archer and Head of Operations Phil Pearcy were invited to attend the Thriving Theatres Conference to speak about The Courtyard’s Environmental Journey in conversation with The Theatre Green Book.

Our Board have been extremely supportive with the upcoming capital project and our Chairman Bruce Freeman is playing a key part as a Board Environmental Champion as part of the Arts Council England Environmental Responsibility Programme. Our Chairman plays a lead role on environmental responsibility at governance level, taking a special interest in environmental impact and strategy to support and challenge the organisation to drive change at an appropriate pace.

“It has been remarkable how much we have been able to reduce our emissions by embedding and demonstrating a positive and proactive attitude towards sustainability. It was great to receive recognition from The Theatres Trust as a leader in this field, be able to talk with experts and celebrate our success with peers. The next steps on our journey are already underway and we are delighted to be heading into the summer knowing our stage LED lighting upgrades will make a massive difference to the sustainability of this organisation for another generation.”

The platform the arts has to generate awareness and understanding of these issues is unlike any other and will be key to dealing with the climate emergency moving forward. Having participated in Board Environmental Champions training over the last year, it is clear that The Courtyard is at the forefront of reaching our goal of being carbon zero by 2035, and it is accepted by Julie’s Bicycle that we have set an example for other arts organisations to follow.

WE’VE DONE IT… WITH YOUR HELP!

Thanks to a marathon fundraising effort, especially the support of our wonderful supporters and the wider general public (including our Christmas Appeal), we are really pleased that our Give The Green Light Appeal has hit its target of £361,000. This means we can press GO on this eco-lighting project which will deliver vibrant new lighting for our performance spaces, drop our utility bills - saving vital funds for our outreach work - and permanently reduce our carbon footprint.

We would particularly like to acknowledge the generous support of the following trusts and foundations:

Bernard Sunley Foundation

Garfield Weston Foundation

Clive Richards Foundation

The Brailsford Charity Foyle Foundation

Theatres Trust

The new LED lighting systems will be installed across all three performance spaces: Main House, Studio and Nell Gwynne, starting on Monday 4 August. The most extensive work will be in the Main House where we will also be replacing the house lighting, meaning the space will need to ‘go dark’ for five weeks. However, we will be programming lots of activities, shows and films in the Studio and other spaces to make sure there’s plenty going on for customers. The Café Bar will also be open for business, check the website for more information nearer the time.

Youth Theatre Ignite

Spaces are available both in the Main House and the Studio with a free seat for an essential companion or personal assistant.
