WELCOME Welcome to our new season brochure. I am sure you will agree, it is an exciting and vibrant array of shows and activity for everyone to enjoy.
I want to thank everyone who has supported The Courtyard since we have returned from lockdown in May 2021. It has been amazing to see our shows and screenings so well attended, our Café Bar full and our Education and Outreach programme packed with activity. The Courtyard has returned bigger, better, and stronger but we need your support now more than ever. The Courtyard is not just about what we programme in our auditoria, it is a lifeline to many people within our community. The Courtyard offers something for everyone, not just on stage but our immense education, outreach and participatory programme. As a registered arts charity, we transform 1,000s of lives through our ground-breaking programme of education and outreach projects. Without you, our vital work just wouldn’t happen. Since we opened in 1998, The Courtyard has: • • • • • • •
Welcomed over 5.5 million visitors Produced over 110 in-house shows Became the first dementia friendly arts centre in the country Worked and continues to work with 98% of schools within Herefordshire Worked with over 28,000 children Led 7000 young people through its Youth Theatre Worked with over 77 care homes
This is an amazing achievement and something Herefordshire should be extremely proud of. You can play an important role at making sure The Courtyard can be there for everyone in the future. In addition to purchasing tickets or dining with us, why not make a donation, become a Patron or consider us when making your Will. However large or small, it will help us to keep arts and culture alive in Herefordshire. Very best wishes, Ian Archer Chief Executive and Artistic Director

A New View of God and its effect on Well-being Phillip Hockley explains the life-giving power of Christian Science. Phillip suffered for many years from a severe spinal injury. He tried many alternative and spiritual healing methods without any cure until he attended a Christian Science lecture here in Hereford and was healed. “What happened to me at that lecture was truly transformational. Christian Science gave me a new view of God that I’d not had before. From that moment on I knew I had found something very special and couldn’t wait to explain this experience to others – this ability to love and be loved by God.” During the lecture Phillip shares actual accounts of healing and protection from contagion in his own life and in the lives of others. www.christianscience.org.uk/hereford Phillip Hockley

notes on loving Based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Notes on Loving explores the ways in which we overcomplicate, misunderstand, and mishandle romantic love. Set to music by both the 20th Century composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold and contemporary composer Jacob Fitzgerald, four live musicians accompany dancers Gabriella Engdahl and Emily Pahlawan Collinson, as they take us through the many ages, stages, and guises of romance. A piece of dancetheatre that asks what all the fuss is about, and that reveals Shakespeare’s observations on love to be as relevant as ever.

“WhenAD your heart HIRE sleeve, HIRE ST STis the only trick up your AD you can bring a giant to its knees” This inspiring and funny coming of age story will transport you back to Herefordshire in the 70s. an easy way to give more! Did you know you can make your donations to The Courtyard go a lot further without it costing you anything apart from a bit of time filling in a form? As a registered charity we can claim gift aid of 25% on money donated from eligible donors. In the tax year up to March 2020 we raised nearly £20,000 from gift aid. That’s a large amount of money which makes a real difference to what we do! If you pay tax here in the UK, we can claim an extra 25p from HMRC for every £1 you donate. The only condition is that the value of the gift aided amounts in any one tax year doesn’t exceed the tax you pay. If you are eligible for gift aid but haven’t filled in a declaration form yet, we’d love to hear from you. Forms are downloadable from the website or available from the Box Office during opening hours. Thankyou for your support.

Who remembers September 1998? There was a lot happening that month nearly 25 years ago. Who wants to be a Millionaire? and The Royle Family premiered on television; Larry Page and Sergey Brin launched Google and changed the internet forever; Akira Kurosawa, the renowned Japanese film director, died at the age of 88; Geri Haliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress raised over £36,000 for charity when it was sold at auction, and on the 18th of September, the doors opened at our very own Courtyard Centre for the Arts. We’re currently planning lots of events and activities to celebrate our 25th anniversary, so keep an eye out for what’s happening in 2023. Come and join the party!
