WELCOME

Welcome to The Courtyard’s Autumn season with, what promises to be, an exciting selection of fabulous events both on and off stage. As always, we bring to Hereford a wide variety of quality productions to choose from and this season I am particularly thrilled to present four of The Courtyard’s own incredible productions. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Ronnie Radford’s much celebrated goal, scored against Newcastle United on 5 February 1972. It is with immense excitement that, as part of this 50th Anniversary, we are re-staging The Goal at The Courtyard from 9 - 16 September. This is a beautiful nostalgic comedy that will transport you back to the 70s. Polly Teale’s adaption of Charlotte Bronte’s masterpiece, Jane Eyre, is brought back to life by The Courtyard from 4 - 8 October. This Professional/Amateur production will bring our Senior Youth Theatre together with actors from our community and from professional theatre. Also, don’t forget to book your tickets for The Courtyard’s spellbinding and enchanting Christmas shows. The Courtyard’s pantos have been voted as one of the top 5 pantos in the country for theatres of no more than 500 seats. So come and see why. ‘Be our guest’ as we set the stage for the magic of this most famous of fairy tales, Beauty and the Beast. For our younger audience members, don’t miss our enchanting retelling of the classic fairy tale Snow White. This beloved story is full of creative storytelling interactive puppetry and is lots of fun. In addition to what goes on our stage, The Courtyard continues to provide a platform for the arts in many ways throughout the community of Herefordshire. Our work in the community, through our education, outreach and participatory programmes is vast and continues to flourish. The Courtyard is, of course, your arts centre and we rely on you to support us through purchasing tickets, becoming a friend or patron and using our fantastic Café Bar and Courtyard Chase Lounge to remain as Herefordshire’s centre for the arts for generations to come. On behalf of us all at The Courtyard, thank you for your support and I do hope that you will join us for some of the fantastic shows we have on stage or through attending any of our fabulous courses and classes or by supporting our work in your community. Very best wishes, Ian Archer, Chief Executive and Artistic Director Front cover image: The Naughty Fox by Toucan Theatre (p.29) © The Other Richard

An unforgettable portrayal of one woman’s trailblazing quest for equality and freedom. Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece is brought vividly to life by The Courtyard in Polly Teale’s striking adaptation of the classic novel, Jane Eyre. From the cruelty of Jane’s childhood to the tempestuous secrets of her adult life, this production revels in the passions of one of literature’s most loved heroines. As a child, the orphaned Jane is taught to stifle her natural vivacity. A part of herself is locked away, out of view of polite society… until she arrives at Rochester’s house as a governess to his young child. Soon Rochester’s passionate nature reawakens Jane’s hidden self, but darker mysteries are stirring in the attic… This Pro-Am production has an exciting mix of Professional, Community and Youth Theatre cast. Bold, inventive, and intensely powerful, this moving retelling of Jane’s struggle for freedom, puts the interior life of this captivating novel centre stage.

There was once a little girl so small she could float on a lily pad and ride on the back of a dragonfly... Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a girl no bigger than a thumb and her encounters with a frog, mouse, mole and swallow, is played gently amongst gardening tools, leading her to ultimate happiness in the kingdom of flowers. Using traditional glove, rod and shadow puppets, this is an excellent introduction to the magic of theatre. For children aged 2+ and their families. “A Gem” - The Times

However everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
