In the twilight of a pre-colonial Zimbabwe, a world of unyielding beliefs and ritual, where the afterlife and the present co-exist: two young men. The first Hamlet, a tribal prince, confronts madness vs reason as he returns to find his father murdered, his mother incoherent and a new dangerous chief has taken over. The other, Leartes, falls victim to the new ruler as he must revenge the death of his father and that of his sister who finds herself in the ultimate peril. Two actors, two props and the convergence of two cultures.

ARTS & OLDER PEOPLE The Arts & Older People programme runs a variety of projects in locations all over Herefordshire. The aim of the programme is to address the problem of isolation and lack of access to creative activity for older people in the county. In addition, we offer training for carers, volunteers and staff working with older people, allowing them to bring creativity to their work while enhancing their career development. Our flagship project is an innovative programme of poetry writing sessions for people with dementia. World renowned ‘dementia poet’ John Killick has been mentoring three poets from the region, who work in residential homes and day centres across Herefordshire. The project is run in partnership with the Ledbury Poetry Festival and was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the recent praXis Arts and Health Awards. A book of poems from the first phase of the project – In The Pink – is available from the Courtyard box office for £3. We run several ‘Extend’ exercise classes throughout the county, led by Veronica Wood. Extend provides gentle exercise to music for older people and for anyone of any age with a disability. The classes promote health, increase mobility and independence, improve strength, co-ordination and balance and help to counteract loneliness and isolation. They are suitable for those who are chairbound or recovering from an injury. For more information visit www.extend.org.uk or contact the Arts & Older People Officer. Thanks to allpay for their fourth sponsorship of a Courtyard youth theatre show – this time in the shape of the hugely successful Our Country’s Good in February. ‘allpay is committed to making a difference to the Herefordshire community through a number of projects’ explains Lisa Howell, allpay’s Broadband Manager (pictured above, centre, with cast). ‘One of these is our rural broadband service and involvement with The Courtyard’s youth theatre work also supports this ethos. We’re proud to be continuing our association with the team,’ says Lisa Howell. www.allpay.net
