BMW’s latest M series range races into the showroom.
IF BMW pitches itself as a sporting make, nothing has represented that image better for the past 35 years than the M3 model.
The popular M3 sedan and sibling M4 coupe sit atop the compact 3 Series range as performance flagships for the entire brand.
Demonstrating this, the M3/4 has won four of the five annual Bathurst 6-Hour races for standard production cars.
The first four cars in this year’s race were M3s or M4s.
Clearly, the cars’ speed, reliability and durability can’t be faulted, so hopes are high for the seventh-generation range, which has just landed in showrooms.
In BMW tradition, a 3.0 litre straight-six engine with twin turbochargers powers the new M cars.
The ‘base’ car, priced at $144,900 for the sedan and $5,000 more for the coupe, gets 353 kiloWatts of power.
Pay a further $10,000 on sedan or coupe for the Competition version with 22 kW more power, 8-speed transmission and some other go-faster and comfort goodies.
BMW follows the familiar prestige manufacturer maxim that less weight costs more.
If you’re serious about doing track days, you may option ceramic brakes ($16,500), carbonfibre body parts ($9500), lightweight seats ($7500) and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres ($2000).
