EV UPDATE
From sedans to scooters, practical EVs are the vehicles of the future.
THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE naysayers expect every obstacle to be overcome today, but in fact, like computers and mobile phones, the process will be gradual but ultimately successful.
I do not recommend buying an EV unless it suits the intended use – i.e., no trips to the Outback – but some sensible horses for courses are arriving on the market. WORDS CHRIS NIXON
About now, Chinese maker LDV is saving all our weekends with Australia’s first all-electric ute – ideal for urban tradesmen – and a small cargo van.
Mercedes-Benz has launched the eVito panel van and people mover, while Ford is lining up an electric Transit van. If you’re in business, these make sense.
Rolls-Royce has joined the EV fray with the fabulous two-door, four-seat Spectre, unveiled at the recent Paris motor show.
The Spectre will enhance the Rolls-Royce experience, the maker claims, providing instant torque, silent running and ‘the sense of one imperceptible gear that have defined the characteristics of its cars since the first example in 1904’.
Launch photos depict a coupe of stunning beauty and detailed luxury, including a contemporary new take on the famous upright front grille and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.
Given electric power’s silent running ability, how does RollsRoyce enhance its own signature silence – so quiet it’s said the only sound to be heard is the ticking clock?
It adds 700 kg – 700 kg! – of sound-deadening material.
Price? If you have to ask …
Benzina Zero – no petrol – is the catchy name for a new range of electric motor scooters that has been born right here in southern Queensland.
Well-known scooter stalwart Joe D’Ercole – he’s as Italian as Vespa – has launched the product in Australia and simultaneously in his homeland with the slogan ‘for work and play’.
While the conventional-looking City and Sport are ideal for urban commuters the distinctively-designed and sturdier Duo clearly has commercial potential.
Quick, nimble, quiet, easily-charged and with platforms front and rear to hold goods, the Duo should appeal to many small business operators.
