THE COVETED Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2022 Exhibition is now open at the HOTA Gallery.
One of Australia’s most significant awards for contemporary photographic practice, and the richest prize for photography in Queensland, the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award provides a national platform for emerging and established artists working in the broad medium of contemporary photography.
The new major exhibition features 40 works from a selection of cross-generational and culturally diverse artists including Abdul Abdullah, Michael Cook, Jo Duck, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Naomi Hobson, The Huxleys, Paula Mahoney, Petrina Hicks and Jemima Wyman.
HOTA has developed a program of events which take inspiration from the exhibition, allowing Gold Coasters and visitors to the city to immerse themselves in the exhibition’s themes, the technical process of photography, and to meet with finalists through talks and workshops.
Enjoy a High Tea experience unlike any other at Palette Restaurant on Sunday 6 November with dynamic duo, The Huxleys, as your hosts.
Guy Ritani, an activist, designer, and cofounder of PermaQueer, will host the Rainbow Story Hour on Friday 18 November.
ARTLAB is joined by finalist Aaron Chapman for a Parkland Photo Walk on Saturday 19 November, while Little ARTLAB Sun Photos on Wednesday 23 November will see little ones working with natural materials and light sensitive paper to harness the suns’ ability to make an image.
Rounding out the program on Thursday 24 November Drawing For Life will welcome special guest Julia Rose.
“At HOTA, we pride ourselves on our rich community relationships,” said HOTA Director, Gallery and Visual Arts, Tracy Cooper-Lavery.

HOTA, Home of the Arts, has announced wani toaishara as the winner of the 2022 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, for his work do black boys go to heaven. wani's practice, based in videography and performance, responds to African affairs and visual culture while interrogating dislocation for those on the margins. Recently incorporating photography into his practice, the winning work is informed by research into African archival material and deep dialogue with family and friends. “As a person whose primary form of art making is videography with a background in performance, specifically experimental theatre, photography is something I’ve always loved but only recently had the courage to start practicing publicly and incorporating within my practice,” wani said. “Winning this validates that choice and the courage it took to explore it. “It’s a huge honour to even be selected amongst these incredible finalists, but an even bigger one to win the award.”
