News in brief Meet the new boss BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green Hotel’s new General Manager Ben Mayou, the Hotel’s Deputy General Manager has been promoted to General Manager. He joined the Hotel in 2011, with a remit to move the property from 3 to 4 stars and take the existing customer service and standards of the business to the next level.

Room with a view At BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green Hotel Alexander’s Pub resident kestrels were back for the 7th year this spring and this time we managed to get a photo of the chicks peeking out!

MD Tim explains; ‘Ben has done an excellent job over the last three years and particularly in the last 12 months when as a team the Hotel has achieved record sales and our best ever customer review performance’. Tim will remain based at BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green but will take on a more strategic role looking for ways to further develop and grow the business.

AMBITION: To become a Manager a CGH

New bedrooms, new branding…

NAME: Jenny Stocks POSITION: Trainee Manager LIKES: Playing guitar DISLIKES: I hate spiders!!! AMBITION: Go on a safari, become a Manager

BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green Hotel introduced their Trainee Management Scheme as a way to ‘grow their own’ talent. ‘We like to promote from within’, explains HR Manager Grace Williamson, ‘and felt that recruiting staff at the beginning of their careers and nurturing them into the Hotel way of doing things we would develop outstanding managers for the future’. Jenny Stocks and Penny Brown joined the Hotel in June 2013, as part of the first intake of trainees. WHY DID YOU APPLY TO BE A TRAINEE MANAGER AT BEST WESTERN PLUS CASTLE GREEN HOTEL? Jenny: I knew I wanted to work in the hotel industry, and this seemed the perfect opportunity. I’d been to the Hotel before and I could really see myself working there. Penny: I was already doing a course in Hospitality Management so thought this would provide the practical element and help me expand my knowledge and skills. WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED ABOUT YOUR TIME SO FAR? Jenny: I particularly enjoy the food and beverage departments and the opportunity to work with different members of staff across the Hotel. Penny: My first department was Reception and with it being the centre of the Hotel I gained a high level of knowledge straight away. I’m currently based in the Greenhouse Restaurant and enjoy the daily challenges of running a busy department. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE? Jenny: I hope to continue to learn and progress throughout the Hotel. Penny: Continued development in all areas of the Hotel with a management position to be gained in the future.

We know our product better than anyone and we have the team that want to give you our best Hotel experience

We’ve had an eventful year at both hotels.

Love it or loathe it the internet is definitely here to stay and like many other areas it has revolutionised the hotel industry. I am old enough to remember telex machines, rack rates and even paper booking sheets to record rooms booked and length of stay. In many ways the internet has given hotels the opportunity to become more efficient and customer focused but it has also brought with it significant challenges. One of those challenges is the rise of the OTA (Online Travel Agent) and the cost of doing business to the Hotel of that booking channel. Many guests now choose to book through an OTA - Booking.com, Laterooms or Expedia for instance. I can understand why… they have state of the art websites which are very easy to use, meta search facilities so that you can compare prices for different hotels and the advertising and marketing spend that they have at their disposal means that their brand is well known and they are high up any search that you make on the internet. However, as a business we limit the Online Travel Agents that we work with and we would always encourage our customers to book direct where we think that you will get the best experience. After all it is our Hotel so we can allocate the most suitable room, talk with confidence about our restaurant

and leisure facilities and explain about all the exciting things there are to do in the area. We have a fantastic website which is suitable for any device from desktop to tablet and mobile. It is packed with lots of information on our Hotels and if you prefer to book online we have a quick and easy booking experience that takes the reservation straight into our system. Whether it is calling the Hotels direct or booking on our websites we know our product better than anyone and we have a team that want to give you our best Hotel experience. What guests generally also do not know is how much OTA’s charge hotels in commission. It may surprise you that the commission costs on each booking start at 15% and go as high as 30% depending upon the OTA. This means that for a £100 accommodation booking via Booking.com we will pay £18 before the VAT is taken off. But why should the guest care about that? The rate will be no higher than booking direct (that is one of the conditions of the contract) and the terms and conditions are comparable.

Well, I think it matters because those costs need to be absorbed by the business which means less money to spend on other things – refurbishment or payroll for instance. We still make sure in our Hotels that we provide value for money and always aim to exceed the customer’s expectation but costs of this significance have an impact.

THREE REASONS TO BOOK DIRECT

We also encourage customers to book through Best Western where the costs are lower and the profits of the organisation go back into marketing and services for the benefit of the Member Hotels and customers. Of course, any way that you choose to book we would like to welcome you to the BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green and Pinewood Hotels but we believe that direct is best because we can tailor the booking to your requirements and use the money we save in commission to invest back into the business.
