O’NIEL OBSERVATORY MISSION VIEJO, CA FALL 2013 CAL POLY POMONA
THE O’NIEL OBSERVATORY SEEKS TO ENHANCE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE USERS OF THE BUILDING AND THE ENVIRONMENT. THE BUILDING NATURALLY DRAWS PEOPLE IN WHILE FRAMING VIEWS OF THE SURROUNDING MEADOW AND FULFILLING THE NEEDS OF VISITORS AND PARK STAFF. THE “W” DESIGN MINIMALISTICALLY POINTS THE PUBLIC AREAS TO THE OPEN MEADOW AND THE PRIVATE AREAS TOWARDS THE SERVICE STREET. The studio began with 4 vignette studies covering the topics of: cantilever, folded plate structure, tower, and building envelope.

JOSHUA TREE VISITOR CENTER JOSHUA TREE, CA SPRING 2013 CAL POLY POMONA
THE CONCEPT OF THE VISITOR CENTER WAS TO ULTIMATELY ACHIEVE AN EXPERIENCE AND BUILDING DERIVED FROM THE CONDITIONS OF THE SURROUNDING ROCKS. CONDITIONS SUCH AS INTERSTITIAL SPACE, PENETRATION, UNITY, ENVELOPE, HEAVY, AND CONTRAST WERE DRIVING FORCES BEHIND THE DIAGRAM. JUST AS ONE ROCK CLIMBS AND HIS OR HER POSITIONS IS A FUNCTION OF THE ROCKS, USERS OF THE BUILDING EXPERIENCE IT IN RELATION TO THE ROOF WHICH DOUBLES AS EARTHWORK AND ROOFWORK. BECAUSE THE BUILDING IS A THROUGH CONDITION, THE BUILDING IS PLACED ADJACENT TO THE TRAIL AND CONTAINS A COMPLETE LINEAR PENETRATION. SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES WERE EMPLOYED IN THIS PROJECT WHILE PRESERVING THE MAJOR NORTH AND SOUTH FACING VIEWS.

ROOFWORK VS EARTHWORK The ribbon that serves as the roof and earthwork seeks to anchor the building into the ground acting as both heavy and light. The experience through the building is always in relation to the ribbon which defines indoor vs outdoor relationships, major datum lines, and regulating lines.

NOGUCHI MUSEUM LITTLE TOKYO, CA WINTER 2013 CAL POLY POMONA
THE NOGUCHI MUSEUM IS DESIGNED AROUND ITS CONTEXTUAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY. A PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY IS PROVIDED THROUGH THE BASEMENT OF THE BUILDING PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY TO EXPOSE THE PUBLIC TO ART. THE PROCESS INVOLVES SUBTRACTING AND ADDING PLANES AND FOLDS TO CREATE SPACES THAT MAXIMIZE TRANSPARENCY BETWEEN SPACES WITHIN AND OUTSIDE THE MUSEUM. THE MAIN RIGHT OF WAY THROUGH THE MUSEUM GUIDES BUSY PEOPLE THROUGH THE GROUND WHILE THE SECONDARY PATHWAYS EXPOSES PEOPLE TO A UNIQUE SET OF EXPERIENCES. ALSO, THE IDEAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JAPANESE GARDEN ARE IMPLIED INTO THE PROGRAM, WITH SCENIC VIEWS OF THE CENTRALLY LOCATED JAPANESE GARDEN WITH CIRCULATION INFLUENCING CONTEMPLATION THROUGH MORE INDIVIDUAL PATHS TO SEE NOGUCHI PIECES AND DIFFERENT VIEWS OF THE GARDEN. THE MUSEUM ULTIMATELY HOPES TO ACHIEVE AN EXPERIENCE THAT LEAVES PEOPLE FEELING MORE ARTISTICALLY CULTURED.

THE PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY PROVIDES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STREET AND THE BACK PLAZA, WHICH CONNECTS TO A BUSINESS DISTRICT, THUS MAKING THE MUSEUM AN INTEGRAL PART OF PEOPLES’ DAILY JOURNEY. JAPANESE GARDENS AS WELL AS PERMANENT GALLERY SPACE ARE PROVIDED ON THE STREET LEVEL.
