JOSHUA TREE VISITOR CENTER SPRING 2013

THE CONCEPT OF THE VISITOR CENTER WAS TO ABSTRACT THE CONDITIONS TAKEN FROM THE SURROUNDING ROCKS. CONDITIONS SUCH AS INTERSTITIAL SPACE, FRAGMENTATION, PENETRATION, AND HEAVY VS LIGHT. JUST AS WHEN ONE CLIMBS THE ROCKS AND HIS OR HER POSITION IS ALWAYS DEPENDENT ON THE ROCKS, USERS OF THE BUILDING HAVE AN ALTERNATING EXPERIENCE AS THE ROOFWORK BECOMES EARTHWORK. BECAUSE THE BUILDING IS A THROUGH CONDITION, IT IS PLACED ADJACENT TO THE TRAIL AND CONTAINS A COMPLETE LINEAR PENETRATION.

EARTHWORK VS ROOFWORK THE RIBBON THAT SERVES AS THE ROOF AS WELL AS EARTHWORK ANCHORS THE BUILDING INTO THE GROUND, ACTING AS BOTH HEAVY AND LIGHT MATERIAL. THE EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE BUILDING IS ALWAYS IN RELATION TO THE RIBBON WHICH DEFINES INDOOR VS OURDOOR RELATIONSHIPS, MAJOR DATUM LINES, AND REGULATING LINES.

SPACEPORT CALIFORNIA WINTER 2015

A JOINT STUDIO BETWEEN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS AND ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS, THE SPACEPORT CALIFORNIA LOCATED IN ANTELOPE VALLEY, CA, SEEKS TO UTILIZE A BOLD STRUCTURAL SYSTEM TO GENERATE THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. CATENARY ARCHES SPAN THE SECTION OF THE BUILDING, DEFINING ENCLOSURE, PROCESSION, RHYTHYM, AND MATERIALITY. THE PROGRAM WAS GIVEN BY NASA ENGINEERS, WITH THE INTENTION OF HOUSING A SPACECRAFT CAPABLE OF DELIVERING COMMERCIAL SUB-ORBIT FLIGHTS. THE STRUCTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AREAS INCLUDE PIVOT POINT JOINTS, GLUE LAMS, STUCTURAL ROOF LATTICE, AND 30% CROSS BRACING.

WILSHIRE CONCERT HALL FALL 2015

CONCERT HALLS CAN BE CATEGORIZED AS LOOSE FIT OR TIGHT WRAP. THIS STUDIO WAS AN EXPLORATION OF HOW THE PROGRAM OF A CONCERT HALL AND AESTHETIC DETERMINE WHETHER THE ENVELOPE IS TIGHT FITTING OR LOOSE. MOST DESIGN WAS DONE THROUGH ANALOGUE PROCESS, WITH THE IDEA OF CREATING AN ORGANIC CENTRAL ATRIUM WITH INTERIOR RIBBON WALLS DEFINING CANTILEVERS, ENCLOSURE, FLOOR AND ROOF. DESIGN WAS AN INTERATIVE PROCESS OF REARRANGING, RESIZING, AND REDESIGNING INDIVIDUAL BLOCKS OF PROGRAM ARRANGED WITHIN A SITE ENVELOPE. PROGRAM INCLUDES REHEARSAL ROOMS, AUDITORIUM, RESTAURANT, OFFICES, GALLERY, STUDIO SPACE, LIBRARY, AND GIFT SHOP. THE FINAL RESULT WAS A CONCERT HALL MUCH INSPIRED BY DESIGNS BY JAPANESE ARCHITECTS SUCH AS SANAA.
