Tide doesn’t fear Gator speed By Greg Ostendorf GameDay Editor It’s been 30 years since Paul “Bear” Bryant won his fifth national championship at Alabama, and he did it during a time when toughness and grit ruled the gridiron. In fact, it was Bryant who made the switch to the wishbone in 1971, a run-heavy offense that led to three of the six national championships he won. Today’s game has seen a dramatic revolution in the way teams have begun to move the ball. Offenses no longer grind it out on the ground and rely on their defense to win games. Instead, the introduction of the spread offense has resulted in quarterbacks throwing it 40 to 50 times a game and teams scoring twice as many points as they did back in Bryant’s day. With the new offensive schemes, the need for skill players has gone way up, and the key ingredient to look for is speed. Today’s game has become light years faster from where it was three decades ago. A perfect example of that speed that has transformed the game is this year’s Florida team. The Gators feature four of five different guys that would make any defense wary no matter what era it played in. “They have a lot of speed,” head coach Nick Saban said. “The outstanding skill guys that they have, whether it’s the receivers, the number of runners or the combination or runner and receivers, like Percy Harvin, they have a lot of weapons.” It also doesn’t hurt that Heisman Trophywinner Tim Tebow directs the offense. Tebow has already accounted for 37 touchdowns this season, and his combination of speed and

You might come in and make a big play on him, sack him, get an interception, but when he comes back, you’re going to get his best every time. That’s what you’ve got to love, and you’ve got to respect about a guy like that.” With Tebow, Harvin and all of the other
playmakers on this Florida team, it’s easy to see why analysts everywhere believe the Gators are going to win Saturday and why they are a 10-point favorite heading into the game. Is Florida just too fast for Alabama to keep up with? “Too fast, I don’t think so,” defensive end Bobby Greenwood said. “They’ve got a quick offense. We’ve just got to focus on stopping the run and make them one-dimensional.

PS3 SAYS | FLORIDA 17, ALABAMA 13 By Cyrus Ntakirutinka Sports Reporter Florida defeated Alabama by a score of 17-13 and was crowned the SEC champions in the PS3 simulation season. A large part of the victory was due the contributions of quarterback Tim Tebow and wide receiver Percy Harvin, amassing for 200 of the offense’s 210 net yards. Tebow finished the game 6-of-10 for 119 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Harvin had three receptions for 31 yards, as well as three carries for 71 yards and a rushing touchdown. Alabama’s defense answered the call early in the game, holding Tebow’s offense to a 35yard field goal by Caleb Sturgis that put the Gators up 3-0. Quarterback John Parker Wilson led the Tide to a 53-yard drive on its first possession of the game that was punctuated by a Leigh Tiffin field goal from 22 yards out to tie the score at 3-3. Wilson finished the game 14-of-21 for 103 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. The Gators offense wasted no time scoring on their next possession, a drive that only eclipsed two plays. The first pass to Harvin was for a 13-yard gain, setting up the 57-yard pass to tight end Aaron Hernandez for a touchdown, putting the Gators up 10-3. On the ensuing possession, Wilson and running back Glen Coffee led a 63-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a 25-yard field

Alabama jumped out early in the third quarter, as wide receiver Mike McCoy returned the initial kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Tide its first and only lead at 13-10. Florida responded quickly with three straight running plays to snatch the lead back. Harvin took it in from 54 yards out for the goahead-score to give the Gators a 17-13 lead. From there, the Florida defense held their ground as the Tide offense struggled to move the ball and couldn’t get on the board again.

While Alabama gets the reputation of a power team, the Crimson Tide knows a thing or two about speed, too. Just ask Javier Arenas, who leads the SEC in punt return yards on the season and is tied with two return scores. Arenas also ran back an interception 63 yards for a touchdown against Arkansas earlier in the year. “It’s about confidence,â€? Arenas said. “When you’re confident, you’re fast. Looking back, when I was playing in my freshman year, I was always fast, but I didn’t look fast on the field. The next year when I gained a lot of confidence out there, it wasn’t the fact that I trained to get a lot faster, I was just more confident and played faster.â€?

Arenas and the rest of the Alabama defense have displayed that confidence all year. The unit leads the conference in both scoring and total defense. “We’ve got speed just as well,� linebacker Cory Reamer said. “We’ve got a great defense that can move sideline to sideline, and that’s going to be a key, making sure we have all eleven players around the ball.� The way to stop Florida may not be to focus on containing Tebow running with the ball as much as eliminating the big plays from the speed guys like Harvin, Chris Rainey and Jeffrey Demps. The Tide has done a good job all year of not allowing the big plays, but the Florida offense provides an entirely new and difficult challenge.

“We have to control gaps and leverage their speed that they have and play smart in terms of how we keep people cut off and minimize big plays,� Saban said. “I think when you watch this team play, that’s the thing that’s most compelling is the number of big plays that they make.� Regardless of how fast Florida is, the Alabama players welcome the challenge and will not be afraid of the Gators come Saturday. That’s the attitude Saban has entrenched in them, the same attitude Bryant once carried in his day. “From a competitive character standpoint, this is what you play for, this is what you do to have an opportunity like this,� Saban said. “Certainly our team and our players are looking forward to it.�

Tebow, Gators still avenging loss By Jason Galloway Assistant GameDay Editor

im Tebow made a firm promise to Florida fans after the Gators found themselves on the wrong end of a one-point game against Ole Miss on September 27, and one would be hard pressed to argue that he hasn’t kept that promise up to this point. The Florida quarterback addressed the media after trying to compose himself in the locker room for nearly an hour after that heart-breaking defeat. With tears mildly present in his eyes, his voice wavering, yet determined, he assured the nation that nobody in college football would work as hard as he and the Gators would the rest of the season. Since that day, Florida is 8-0 in a slate that has included four ranked teams, and the Gators have claimed an average margin of victory of 39.6 points per game, while Tebow has accounted for 29 touchdowns during the streak. “They had one slip up this season that I’m sure they wish they had back,” said Alabama linebacker Cory Reamer. “Their offense is real powerful; they put up a lot of points each week. We’re just going to have to be on our game and be prepared for them.” Tebow isn’t the only reason Florida’s offense has produced more than 51 points per game over the Gators’ last eight games. The Gators backfield is loaded with speedsters, and their top three backs all average more than seven yards per carry. Freshmen
Chris Rainey and Jeffery Demps average 7.98 and 9.62 yards per carry, respectively, while sophomore Emmanuel Moody, a Southern Cal transfer, boasts a 7.43 average. Florida’s best player, however, could actually be at wide out. Junior wide receiver Percy Harvin is a dangerous threat through the air and on the ground, with 1,249 total yards and 16 total touchdowns this season. “I think the balance that they have on offense, the point production and consistency that they’ve shown [makes them one of the best teams in the country],” said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. “They have a lot of weapons and a lot of speed.” The exceptional talent and production that Florida has shown on offense may have overshadowed the Gators’ defense, which is fourth in the nation in scoring defense, giving up 12.3 points per game. “They are one of the top defensive teams in the country,” Saban said. “They’ve got great speed and athleticism and they do a great job of forcing turnovers.” Florida holds the nation’s top spot for turnover differential at plus-21 and is third in the country in non-offensive touchdowns with seven. A new tale with the same story By Spencer White Contributing Writer Though most of the students attending the University of Alabama were too busy playing with their kids’ meal toys from McDonalds to remember it, this is not the first Alabama team in the last 20 years to feature a stifling defense, powerful running game, and an undefeated regular season. In fact, if the trend continues, this year’s edition of the Crimson Tide could pick up a couple of the same pieces its last great predecessor did: an SEC and national championship. The comparisons between the 2008 and 1992 teams begin to turn eerily similar with a closer examination. Both teams had sloppy and unnecessarily close wins against weak Louisiana schools (13-0 against LA Tech in 1992, 20-6 against Tulane this year), both teams shut out Auburn (17-0 in 1992, 36-0 in 2008), and both possess the same furious and determined grit of a true blue-collar team. GameDay 2008 • December 4 between the two teams is the disdain and rather disrespectful brushaside both received from the media. One sportswriter declared Gene Stallings’ undefeated Alabama team “the worst 11-0 team in the country” before the 1992 SEC championship, coincidentally against the Florida Gators. This year, a simple Google search on the Tide will pop up a list of hits ranging from “Why Tim Tebow and Florida will beat Alabama” to “No. 1 Alabama is not the best team.” Sportswriters, by nature, are an easily swayed and influenced group. In an attempt to stay ahead of the public curve, it is much easier and lazier on their parts to look at scores from around the country, as opposed to watching the games themselves. When a high flying offense like the Florida Gators’ comes along, laying waste to a variety of opponents, several common with the Crimson Tide, it suddenly becomes fashionable to ignore any previous mishaps or even, say, losses (Rebels be damned), and immediately assume that the team in question will play every game in the same dominating and lopsided fashion. Who the team plays is out of the question; a flashy and high-scoring offense will always garner the affec-
tions of an analyst before that analyst gives a team credit for its takeno-prisoners, bloodthirsty defense. Add in Tebow, a Heisman winner, and you have a full-blown media love fest revolting enough to make you queasy. Ask the last Heisman winner to face Alabama how his game went.
Alabama was the bridesmaid of the Sugar Bowl, destined to face a crushing defeat and meekly return to Tuscaloosa, tail tucked between its legs. Miami was too fast, too athletic, too good to be humbled by an underwhelming Alabama offense. It never struck the Hurricanes’ fancy to think about the Crimson

His name was Geno Torretta, the star quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes. With three of the best receivers in the country, including self-proclaimed “fastest man in America” Lamar Thomas, the Hurricanes ran all over their Big East opponents to an undefeated season and No. 1 ranking.
Tide defense. Bolstered by the All-American duo of John Copeland and Eric Curry, the Tide boasted one of the most spectacular defenses of all time. It allowed 11 points or less to 10 of its 13 opponents, shutting out three of them. Nine players would go on to be

drafted into the NFL, four of them in the first round. Showing a fire and fury that could not be matched by the Miami offense, the Tide defense rattled, confused and generally whipped Torretta all night, forcing him into three interceptions. This year feels like the fourth part of the “Back to the Future” saga; once again, Alabama finds itself undefeated, staring down a powerful Florida Gators squad for the sixth time in the SEC Championship. In fact, since the realignment of the SEC gave birth to two divisions and a championship game, Alabama has only played Florida in the title game. When was that first game played? You guessed it: 1992. No one here is guaranteeing anything. Florida is a spectacular team, playing with a chip the size of Terrence Cody on its shoulders. They have romped through the past eight games, winning by an average margin of slightly under 40 points per game. Tebow is performing in his Heisman form, throwing left and right to talented receivers like Percy Harvin, Louis Murphy and Anthony Hernandez. Alabama made a valiant effort, but it’s time to admit when a team is better. Some things never change, do they?

Time: 7 p.m. on ABC Series: Oklahoma leads 65-23-5 What to watch for: Oklahoma is letting out a sigh of relief this week as the Sooners’ 20point win over Oklahoma State last week proved to be just enough to bolt them ahead of Texas in the BCS rankings, giving them a berth in this Big 12 title game. Both defenses are a notch below average and Oklahoma boasts the nation’s top scoring offense at 53.3 points per game, while Missouri ranks fourth in that category at 45 per game.

Time: 12 p.m. on ABC Series:Va. Tech leads 10-6 What to watch for: It’s no secret the ACC has had a down year, but an Orange Bowl berth is still at stake in this championship game. Boston College has won its last four games after dropping two in a row, while Virginia Tech has won three of its last four. The Eagles and Hokies rank 14th and 16th in national scoring defense, respectively. Boston College won the regular-season match up between the two 28-23.
Time: 7 p.m. (Fri.) on ESPN2 Series: Ball State leads 6-0 What to watch for: Although Ball State is one of four remaining undefeated teams in the country, it appears the Cardinals have no shot at receiving a BCS bowl bid ahead of higher ranked Utah and Boise State. Ball State presents a very balanced offense with Nate Davis at quarterback and MiQuale Lewis at running back. Buffalo had won five in a row before dropping a three-point game to Kent State at home last week.
