For all the talk of tightened purse strings amid rising inflation and the cost of living crisis, many of us still have ample disposable income – and want to see the world in style.
A record one million passengers embarked on a luxury cruise last year, up from 600,000 in 2019 according to Cruise Industry News.
Little wonder then that operators can't build ships fast enough. Luxury lines such as Scenic, Emerald Cruises and Viking – who, to date, have mostly been known for river cruising – have entered the ocean cruise market while the MSC Group has launched a new luxury arm in Explora Journeys.
Luxury hotel operators are also getting in on the act. Ritz-Carlton is gearing up to launch its third superyacht, Luminara, while Four Seasons and Aman Resorts are muscling in on the cruise market too.
Meanwhile, Abercrombie & Kent's reborn Crystal will add five new luxury ships to its fleet by 2032.
We’ve rounded up some of the most notable luxury cruise ships slated to debut in the new year…
ALLURA, OCEANIA CRUISES
When Allura joins Oceania Cruises’ fleet in summer 2025, she will be the second of the culinary and destination-focused line’s new
Allura class. (Her sister, the 1,200-passenger Vista, set sail in spring 2023).
Like its older sibling, the 11-deck Allura –named to reflect the excitement of starting an immersive new journey – will offer spacious all-balcony cabins, a staff-toguest ratio of 2:3, a stylish resort-style pool deck, and restaurants and bars ranging from Ember (expect reworked American classics) and the plant-based Aquamar Kitchen to the Founder's Bar which will feature craft cocktails.
Allura’s new additions include a Frenchstyle crêperie serving freshly made-toorder crêpes, a luxurious library featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls and Ralph Lauren furnishings, and a tranquil top-deck hub for cocktail slurping.
True to her name, Allura will sail to some of the Mediterranean's most captivating destinations including Cádiz, Cagliari and Cinque Terre in her inaugural season.
Maiden voyage: July 18, 2025
LUMINARA, RITZ-CARLTON
High-end hotel groups are entering previously uncharted waters with a raft of superyachts.
The Ritz-Carlton was the first hotel brand to do so with the launch of the 298-passenger Evrima and 448-passenger Ilma yachts in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Next up is the 453-passenger Luminara, a near-identical vessel to Ilma, which is set to join the hospitality giant’s fleet in 2025.
Derived from the Latin word ‘light’ and decorated in a colour palette of soft browns
and natural fixtures of oak, Calcutta marble, and leather accents, the 226 suite yacht will feature one of the highest staff and space ratios at sea – the new Residential Suite is more than 1,000 sqft.
Onboard amenities will include seven world-class restaurants, a wine vault with rare bottles, a signature Ritz-Carlton spa, and an expanded marina that gives guests direct access to the ocean.
Over to Jim Murren, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's CEO, for the last word: “With Luminara [...] we are expanding the horizons of ultra-luxury travel.”
Maiden voyage: July 31, 2025
STAR SEEKER, WINDSTAR CRUISES
Founded by entrepreneurs Karl G. Andrén and Jean-Claude Potier, Windstar hasn’t expanded its fleet since 2014/15 when it adopted three ships (Star Pride, Star Legend, and Star Breeze) from Seabourn.
But it’s all change as the small-ship specialist gets ready to welcome a brandnew vessel in December 2025.
Star Seeker will be the first of Windstar’s new Star class and able to accommodate 224 passengers in 112 suites across 12 categories – the lion’s share of which will feature verandas or floor-to-ceiling windows.
Or if you’re feeling flush, plump for the two, new top-deck Horizon Owner's suites replete with wraparound balconies.
Despite its small size, there won’t be a dull moment onboard thanks to a full-service spa, five fab dining venues (Windstar is
the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation), and a new twist on the line’s signature Watersports Platform – which will turn the ocean into an infinity pool by letting guests access the sea directly from the ship.
Maiden voyage: December 28, 2025
XCEL, CELEBRITY CRUISES
The fifth and final ship in Celebrity Cruises' Edge class series is expected to commence sailing in November 2025.
If you’re a fan of the line’s Edge class series you’ll be pleased to know that, much like her sisters, Celebrity Xcel will feature a Magic Carpet (a tennis-courtsized, cantilevered platform that moves up and down the side of the ship); Infinite Veranda staterooms with outward-facing
walls made entirely of glass; and Eden, an enchanting, rooftop garden.
As for the dining options, the likes of Le Voyage – a fine-dining restaurant by star chef Daniel Boulud – and Celebrity Cruises’ classics Normandie and Raw on 5 will return.
Meanwhile British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, is once again the brains behind the ship's sleek and chic interiors. Passengers can also expect some newness as Celebrity Cruises president Laura Hodges Bethge confirmed: “True to her name, this next step will excel beyond her sister ships with entirely new experiences, yet to be revealed, but that will change the game all over again.”
Maiden voyage: November 18, 2025
Over 100 global voyages departing in 2025 and 2026 are featured in the New Year Sale offer and span some of the most sought-after destinations in the world.
Your guests can embark on an unforgettable journey and enjoy up to a 4 Category Upgrade on select sailings plus their choice of one: Unlimited Wine, Beer and Spirits or a Shipboard Credit of up to US$1,000; Combined with the always free amenities of Your World Included™.

Hidden Gems of the Mediterranean
Teresa Machan
TRAPANI, SICILY
Known for its Mediterranean-fresh red shrimp (àmmaru russu), Trapani sea salt and flavourful “black bread” cooked in stone ovens fired with olive wood, this port on Sicily’s west coast is an historical gem. Under Arab rule in the 9th century the port produced tuna and salt. Today salt is produced within a Special Area of Conservation where there are working windmills, a salt museum and birdlife including flamingos, spoonbills and great white egrets. About an hour’s drive from port is Selinus, where visitors can see the remnants of three impressive temples that were part of a city founded by the Carthaginians, in the mid-7th century.
SARANDE, ALBANIA
Albania may not be the secret it was a decade ago but the port of Sarande on the Albanian Riviera is relatively new to cruise itineraries. The main beach hums with activity and is a great place for people watching and to dine alfresco. Be sure to check out the seafront art gallery and then head up to Sarande’s Byzantine
church, the Monastery of 40 Saints. The monastery’s hillside perch affords great views along the coast.
cobbled, flower-draped streets and the island offers stone windmills (go for the sunset), sandy coves and swimming beaches and plenty of harbourside tavernas.
Cruise excursions visit the UNESCO-listed Butrint National Park. One of Albania’s most important archaeological sites, Butrint is a showcase for Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman ruins. Alternatively, a bus journey around the Riviera’s seaside bays takes visitors to the Venetian-built Porto Palermo Castle and finishes with a sea paddle in the Hellenic village of Himara.
BOZCAADA, TURKEY
Vines have thrived here since antiquity. Take your pick from one of six island vineyards – the three oldest are conveniently in the town centre. Take a tour, see the cellars and then relax in the sunshine and enjoy the local tipple.
SIBENIK, CROATIA
This charming Aegean island off Turkey’s west coast could be one of the destination’s best kept secrets. Bozcaada has a long and interesting history, with influences drawn from the Greek, Persian, Roman and Byzantine empires. Mentioned in Homer’s Iliad it is said to be where the Greeks built the legendary Trojan Horse prior to their attack on Troy.
As your ship approaches port, look out for the imposing walls and moat of the wellpreserved castle. Old Greek houses line the
Fans of Game of Thrones may already unknowingly “seen” Sibenik. Located on the estuary of the Krka River, halfway between Split and Zadar, the city doubles as Braavos in series five. Scenes were filmed in and around the Cathedral of St James and St John’s Fortress – both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Great views can be had from the 11th century St Michael’s fortress, which overlooks the red rooftops of the Old Town.
Shop the boutiques, cool off with a gelato in the medieval street plazas and feel the breeze along the waterfront promenade.
Further afield excursions visit the waterfall trails at Krka National Park, while boat trips visit some of the other islands in the Sibenik archipelago.
MGARR
, MALTA
Packed with charm, the island of Gozo offers snapshots of rural simplicity that are hard to find in the Mediterranean’s busier ports, making a port of call at Mgarr a real treat. Malta’s sister island mixes a tranquil island vibe with an authentic local foodie scene, pretty bays and beaches, handsome architecture and a raft of summer festivals. For a small island there are impressive historical sights, too.
Northwest of Mgarr are the prehistoric and UNESCO-listed temples of Ggantija and in the capital Rabat (formerly Victoria) the imposing bastion walls of the ancient citadel (Cittadella), dating to 1500 BC, encompass a 17th-century Baroque cathedral, an alluring maze of narrow streets and a clutch of interesting museums, including the old prison. From the walls there are fine views over Gozo’s hills, valleys and perched villages.

Iceland Uncovered
Find inspiration for your next luxury cruise holiday with our pick of the new ships taking to the high seas in 2025
Rebecca Barnes
The tide is turning, with beaches and blistering temperatures becoming less of a draw for travellers. The ‘coolcation’ concept – holidays in cooler climates – is trending as adventurous souls opt to sail to some of the most untouched destinations on the planet.
A case in point is Iceland, otherwise known as the Land of Fire and Ice, thanks to its glacial and volcanic terrain. A remote wilderness with diverse natural landscapes and traditional villages, glacial ice covers about 11 per cent of Iceland, but you’ll also discover volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls, fjords and even black-sand beaches. Iceland is divided into seven different geographical regions, including the up-and-coming Northern Westfjords, which attracts cruise passengers to its unspoiled landscapes – it is also home to Iceland’s only resident land mammal, the Arctic fox.
This diverse country’s landscapes are even more breathtaking when viewed from the water, as your ship serenely drifts past floating icebergs and monumental glaciers. A convenient choice for those looking to tick off the key attractions is the Golden Circle, a famous scenic route featuring geological highlights including glaciers, and culturally significant destinations.
So what other attractions and landmarks are worthy of a place on your Iceland itinerary?
AEYKJAVIK ROCKS
Cool and cosmopolitan, the city of Reykjavik features colourful architecture, Viking history and convivial locals. Head downtown to the hub of Iceland’s arts and culture scene, where you’ll find museums and galleries dedicated to Icelandic history alongside boutiques, cafes and restaurants with a lively, distinctly modern vibe.
Outside the world’s
northernmost capital city, ice fields, mountains, volcanoes, lava tunnels, hot springs, glaciers and whale watching opportunities await visitors.
Those keen to set foot or cover even more ground on a glacier when visiting the city should head to Langjökull, located around
one hour and 30 minutes from Reykjavik –guided hikes and snowmobiling are both popular activities.
Wellness lovers can enjoy the warm, mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa pool in the middle of a lava field near Reykjavik. Relaxing in a ‘hot pot’ is part of the culture in Iceland, and the Blue Lagoon is one of the natural wonders of the world.
A NATURAL ATTRACTION
Who doesn’t have the Northern Lights on their bucket list? Iceland is situated in the middle of the Aurora Belt, so make sure you look up when visiting. As light pollution is the enemy, Reykjavik isn’t the best place to view them, however, the top deck of your ship in the middle of the inky ocean provides the perfect vantage point to witness the aurora borealis.
Along with the Northern Lights, one of the biggest draws is the midnight sun, a natural phenomenon where the sun doesn’t set for days or months, and can be experienced in all its golden glory from mid-May to mid-July.
Four fifths of Iceland is uninhabited, meaning it’s one of the best places in the world to see wildlife, including more than 20 species of whales, including the mighty Blue Whale. It is also one of the best
spots to observe large bird populations, including puffins and gannets.
There are three national parks, and any or all of them should be on your itinerary.
Featuring the biggest natural lake in Iceland, hiking opportunities and the Öxaráfoss waterfall, Pingvellir Natural Park is perhaps the most treasured – for that reason it is now a Unesco World Heritage site.
Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, delivers the drama – it is also a popular hangout for whales. At the fjord head lies Akureyri, Iceland’s so-called ‘Northern Capital’, which offers a tranquil botanical garden, museums, quaint eateries, a luxury bathing
lagoon and even an ice cream store. Most cruise ships dock nearby or within walking distance from the town centre.
Remnants of the vast Vatnajokull glacier, the photogenic drifting icebergs of the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon have been featured in many a blockbuster film. Join a guided tour and expect to see seals lounging on icebergs and Arctic Terns soaring overhead; you may even spot a pod of orcas on the hunt for their next meal.
Iceland is home to a staggering number of waterfalls – more than 10,000 to be exact –but one that should be on your must-visit list is the Gullfoss double waterfall, located
on the Golden Circle route in southwest Iceland. In winter, freezing temperatures create ice formations, while the summer sunshine sometimes produces dazzling rainbows.
For sheer scale and power, Glymur can’t be beaten. Combine a visit to the second tallest waterfall in Iceland with an epic hike through the Hvalfjörður fjord, passing by caves, rivers and canyons.
Want to experience Iceland’s pristine natural beauty? Cruise lines including HX, Explora Journeys and Atlas Ocean Voyages all offer immersive voyages to the destination and beyond.
Think of that moment when you arrive in a destination for the first time with the singular purpose of experiencing something new. Feel the flutter of anticipation that builds into wonder as you lay eyes on unfathomable beauty, set foot upon lands that few have touched, taste a delectable flavour you never knew existed or meet the locals who are passionate about sharing their culture with you.
