Surrounded by soaring mountains, wooded valleys, bay waters and the massive Mendenhall Glacier that calves into a lake 12 miles away, Juneau’s appeal somehow extends beyond its sublime location within Alaska’s Inside Passage. The only US capital city not accessible by road oozes gold-rush-era charm along narrow streets fronted by 19th-century architecture.

A bevy of included excursions invites you to find your inner Alaskan, watching for humpback whales, orcas and harbour seals, hiking with a naturalist and rafting a pristine river fed by waters from Mendenhall Lake. Back in Juneau, toast your trip to the Last Frontier at the Alaskan Brewing Company with a taste of locally made ales and lagers.

SKAGWAY, ALASKA

ALASKA

Beginning in 1897, this frontier town at the northernmost point of the Inside Passage was the starting place for more than 40,000 gold-rush stampeders who headed to the Yukon primarily by way of the Chilkoot Trail. You’ll find yourself immersed in the colourful history and characters of the Klondike Gold Rush era in downtown Skagway, where over 20 historic buildings have been preserved and locals in period costumes detail the town’s bawdy history. Ride the historic narrow-gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railway as it climbs 3,000 feet high into immensely picturesque mountains.

INCLUDED SHORE EXCURSION EXAMPLE

THE FACE OF A GIANT

CRUISING THE HUBBARD GLACIER

Among the many words used to describe Hubbard Glacier, ‘humbling’ is perhaps the most appropriate for North America’s largest tidewater glacier. It is 76 miles long and more than six miles wide where it meets the ocean. It is approximately 600 feet tall at its terminal face — 350 feet exposed above the waterline and 250 feet below. It is also over 2,000 feet thick at some locations, and the terminal face’s ice originally fell as snow up to 500 years ago. From your blissful vantage point in Disenchantment Bay, prepare to be thrilled by the crack of this Alaskan colossus calving into a suddenly roiled sea.

MORAINE LAKE

SALMON, AXES & TOTEMS

KETCHIKAN,

You need not know this Inside Passage town’s history to be charmed by Creek Street’s brightly coloured buildings perched on stilts over Ketchikan Creek. Of course, the more you learn, the more you’ll appreciate the frontier mystique of this former ‘Salmon Capital of the World’. Step aboard a pontoon boat for a cruise along the breathtaking George Inlet, passing the cannery — declared a historical landmark in 1996. Watch Alaska’s lumberjacks battle British Columbia’s premier woodsmen in a spirited competition. The indigenous Haida and Tlingit have made totem poles the emblem of Ketchikan — wander through Totem Bight State Historical Park to marvel at over a dozen.

IT DOESN’T STOP THERE

IMMERSE YOURSELF MORE WITH REGENT CHOICE EXCURSIONS

Take your experience to another level with the select itineraries and smaller group tours offered by our Regent Choice Shore Excursions. These unique opportunities require a discounted, supplementary charge and invite you to discover the heights of travel, from our Gourmet Explorer Tours to special experiences that take you off the beaten path. Here we present some examples of our Regent Choice Shore Excursions available in Alaska.

EAGLE PRESERVE FLOAT ADVENTURE AND CRUISE SKAGWAY, ALASKA

Cruise through a spectacularly scenic fjord and then drive on to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve for a meandering float trip down the river. While only a half-hour long, the ferry ride through America’s longest and deepest fjord will be extraordinarily picturesque, so keep your camera ready. The backdrop will be towering mountains, hanging glaciers and lush rainforest. Be sure to look skyward for bald eagles, as the preserve boasts the world’s largest concentration of America’s national bird. They come to feast on the salmon in the shallow water. You will also see the riverside village of Klukwan, the centre of the indigenous Tlingit culture for centuries. At the conclusion of your float, you will be served a deli-style lunch and hot drinks on the riverside before being transferred back to the pier.

WHALE WATCHING & SEAFOOD FEAST

ICY STRAIT (HOONAH), ALASKA

Cruise into waters teeming with humpback whales and other marine life, and then dine on traditional Alaskan dishes at a seafood feast. Point Adolphus has the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so be on the lookout for these majestic and intelligent creatures. They will be breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding voraciously to fatten up for their winter migration south. You might also observe frolicking Dall’s porpoises, Steller sea lions, curious harbour seals and orca whales, as well as majestic bald eagles. Following the whale-watching adventure, enjoy a sumptuous meal of classic Alaskan dishes in Hoonah. The menu will include seasonal shrimp and crabs, Andouille sausage and all sorts of sides. Afterwards, you can roast marshmallows around the campfire.

MAHONEY LAKE OFF-ROAD UTV SAFARI

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA

Experience the thrill of an off-road adventure in a utility terrain vehicle, as you ride through the wilderness towards Mahoney Lake. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of Tongass National Forest and George Inlet. The highlight of the journey is undoubtedly the exhilarating 5-mile trail up the mountainous terrain to Mahoney Lake, where you can switch drivers halfway and ride as a passenger. The trail leads to the serene lake and roaring Mahoney Falls, both of which are well worth exploring. During the stops, discover the history of Ketchikan, including Ward Cove’s pulp mill, Alaska’s longestoperating mill. After the adventure, dine on delicious chilli and reindeer sausage biscuits at the White River base camp while reliving the experience.

Regent Choice Excursions and Go Local Tours may incur additional costs.
