Our vision is simple but ambitious: that all our young people, and staff will flourish in everything they seek to do, become and achieve in our welcoming, inclusive and diverse school community.

THE CRYPT SCHOOL

Welcome

The Crypt School Sixth Form offers an inclusive, friendly and supportive space for everyone to flourish within, whatever their aims and talents may be.

With a strong sense of community, the support and guidance of specialist subject teachers and pastoral tutors, expert careers advice and guidance, together with a diverse student body, The Crypt Sixth Form provides the perfect environment in which everyone can reach their full and deserved potential.

The school motto is, ‘flourish Cryptians,’ and pupils do.

Ofsted Report March 2024 - ‘Outstanding’.

Sixth form life

Pupils make exceptionally good use of the extensive range of extra-curricular activities on offer. They attend plays, lead debates, or compete in one of the many sporting activities on offer. The school ensures that there are no barriers to prevent pupils from participating in these opportunities. Ofsted Report March 2024 - ‘Outstanding’.

Our Founding

Founded in 1539, The Crypt School is one of the oldest schools in the country. Now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the School’s work and ethos is still informed by the vision of its founders, John and Joan Cooke: to provide a free, grammar school education to bright children, regardless of their background.

That enduring vision takes its modern form in the work of the School today, which now provides:

an exceptional educational experience which enables all students to flourish in their school and adult lives, whilst supporting and guiding them to lead happy and fulfilling lives, to develop a strong sense of belonging, of identity and purpose through which they can become active, and engaged citizens, able to demonstrate leadership attributes and through which they demonstrate a strong sense of personal integrity and social responsibility.

Enquiring minds

"The

teacher support network has been extremely beneficial and has aided in my journey so far; with additional support sessions at lunch, and teachers always available to answer my questions, I am making strong progress in my learning.”

Kai Potter, Year 13

Future options

Career

Our university, apprenticeship and employment preparation and support programme is exceptional. This ensures that each student can explore their future options, make connections and are motivated to move into the next stage of their lives with confidence.

Most of our Year 13 leavers go onto courses at the finest universities including Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group institutions, together with local universities such as Gloucestershire and Bristol UWE. Others pursue highly regarded degree apprenticeships with local and national employers, pursue further training or go directly into employment.

Life long connections

I entered The Crypt School with my brother Paul in 1968 following a traumatic time having got caught up in the awful Biafran war. We found a stable school ethos that molded us through strong academic studying, a competitive but caring house structure and of course, rugby!

I won rugby honours and broke sprint records enjoyed a varied and successful career since leaving. The support and guidance of certain masters who I remember with great fondness to this day, were of huge importance. The values of integrity, resilience, fitness, intellectual challenge and caring for others were all nurtured and developed through my Crypt career. I’d be delighted for any of my children to go through a Crypt education.
