Students and staff welcome being a part of our proudly diverse and inclusive school community, where every young person is made to feel welcome for who they are and are supported to fulfil their potential. Our culture enables each student to develop a strong sense of their own identity as a young person, whilst also being proud to belong to our shared Crypt community.

THE CRYPT SCHOOL

Welcome

Founded in the City of Gloucester in 1539, The Crypt School is a welcoming, inclusive space in which each and every member of our school community can lead a rich and fulfilling life, whilst developing a strong sense of belonging, and identity.

It is a place within which they can truly flourish in everything they seek to do and achieve. Underpinning our work in school is our outstanding system of pastoral care, which is focussed on supporting student wellbeing and positive mental health.

We offer an outstanding knowledge rich curriculum, opportunities for personal development and a thorough careers education programme, which prepares students for their future life choices. With opportunities to lead, to take part and contribute, our students can grow and flourish into the young person they wish to become.

A values-based education

Our bright students are challenged and supported to be ambitious about their learning and their own progress, enabling them to achieve outstanding academic outcomes, not just in their exam results, but in developing into critical thinkers, who apply their learning, knowledge and understanding to ask and answer challenging and difficult questions, to be inquisitive and to enjoy learning for its own sake.

Our absolute priority is to work in partnership with parents and carers to ensure the wellbeing of each and every member of our community. Our school systems enable everyone to access the support they may need as they progress through the school. It is from that firm foundation of wellbeing and care, that each individual’s progress and achievements can be built upon.

Personal growth and development: supporting everyone to flourish

Our personal education curriculum is focused on educating all our young people about their world, about themselves and about the rich and varied opportunities which will be available to them as they move through school into their future careers and adult lives.

Our programme also offers opportunities for students to lead, to participate and to work and learn together and which enables them to become active and engaged citizens, able to demonstrate leadership attributes and through which they demonstrate a strong sense of personal integrity and social responsibility.

A rich, diverse and vibrant programme

Academic enrichment, extra-curricular trips and activities are a central focus of our life here at Crypt.

Opportunities abound for students to get involved in: from science and history clubs, and chess, to debating and mentoring; from sports and personal fitness, to music and drama; from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to trips abroad, such as skiing and academic study tours. The opportunities are endless.

A preparation for our changing world

A Crypt education prepares students to flourish in a rapidly changing world. Our curriculum is designed to ensure students understand their world and the challenges and opportunities that will face them as they grow and develop into the person they wish to become.

Our careers education programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the world of further learning and of work and of the changing nature of the labour market, and how their education will enable them to flourish in their future adult lives.

We also attach great importance to each student being able to develop into an active and engaged citizen.

Pupils receive high-quality careers information, education advice and guidance. The school engages with a wide range of education and training providers. Experiences are therefore tailored to pupils’ needs and interests. Ofsted Report March 2024 - ‘Outstanding’.

Our Founding

Founded in 1539 in the City of Gloucester by pioneer educator Dame Joan Cooke, and her husband John, The Crypt School continues to uphold the legacy of its Founders who were committed to providing an outstanding education to students regardless of their backgrounds.

Today, now on its fourth site at Podsmead, the School continues to flourish and grow, now educating over 1100 students on site and extending its work and influence into its local community of schools, universities and employers.

Our Founders would be proud of their school today, which provides an education that is always future focussed, but which is also firmly based on their enduring vision, as well as the School’s values and mission for its young people and staff.

Our outstanding sixth form

Our outstanding school-based sixth form combines an enjoyment of advanced level academic study, with wide ranging opportunities for enrichment, personal growth, and leadership; this, combined with the advice and guidance, as well as care and support, that each student receives, enables everyone to flourish in their last two years of secondary education.

A day at Crypt

Students will all arrive in school by 8.30am, and be welcomed into school by their form tutor, before going to the first of five lessons.

Students enjoy their morning break at 10.50am, purchasing food from the canteen, and socialising together before commencing period 3 at 11.10am.

Students enjoy an hour’s lunch, in which many clubs and enrichment opportunities help develop friendships and that sense of belonging and identity as a Cryptan, before going to their final lesson of the day, which ends at 3.15pm.

Homework club runs after school, as do many sporting fixtures, and some after-school clubs.

Pupils receive an exceptional quality of education and benefit from a rich offer to develop their talents and interests
