Online Secrets of Green River College Learn About the Online Tools and Resources Available On and Off Campus By: James Ristig Campus Editor @RisTigger When entering college for the first time, it can be easy to just coast through your quarters, taking any class you can get. This can cost you both time and money when you look at the requirements for your degree and see that you’ve taken the wrong classes. Planning out your schedule does not have to be a chore, or require hours of work to decide your future. If you really want to get a clear idea of the types of classes you will need, then the Green River College website has a useful feature for you. On the website, the Degree Audit page will show you an unofficial transcript. This transcript has all the classes you’ve taken, and how those credits will contribute towards your degree. There are also multiple degree options to choose from. These degree options should be something you talk with an advisor about, but if you have a plan already, this page has everything you would want. When you look up the degree you want to work towards, the degree audit will show you the credits you have so far and how many you need to complete a particular subject. Another useful feature of the degree audit is that you can see the classes you can take that will give you the right credits. For example, the degree audit will show you classes such as ENG 101 which are required for your degree.

If you need to request your official transcript, you can also do this through the GRC website. Talk to your teachers about what classes you should take and any classes you are interested in. If you have an idea of what major you are working towards, or an education plan, search for the Areas of Study page. This page of the website has a list of all the departments on campus. Each department has set up their own page to show the course requirements or a link to the department’s website. These websites have more detailed information on the classes and instructors in that department.

There is also a link to a page with details about the courses each division offers. The library page in the Academics tab is a wealth of resources for all students. Not only can you look through the library’s catalog of books and videos, but you can search through their database of articles. If you are looking up information for a paper, the Holman library database is the place to go

for various articles about whatever you may need. Go to the Database by Subject page and search through the various databases. It can take a while to find what you are looking for, but these articles are from academic sources and are more trustworthy than a Wikipedia article. If you are looking for a quick reminder of how to cite one of these articles in your paper, the citation guide on the library’s page has everything you will need to write a perfect citation page. The GRC website has other useful features to help new students get acquainted with the college life. You can even pay for classes on the website. In the Online Services page, there is an option to pay for college using a credit card. You can check your balance here and even pay off any money you owe the college. This can save you the hassle of waiting in lines at the Student Affairs and Success Center. If you have not researched it already, information on financial aid and scholarships are on the web-

site. You can view all the information on getting money for college in the Student Affairs tab. For your second quarter, the GRC website is where you can find the times to register for classes. You should also find out who your advisor is and get to know them before next quarter. There’s an up to date calendar for all the events happening at Green River. Keep a close eye on the academic calendar because it has important events such as when classes are canceled and finals schedules. Your student email is an easy and efficient way for teachers and the college to contact you. A new student email is given to you after you have registered and become a student. You can log into your student email from the Online Services page. The bookstore has a full archive of their products with a selection of textbooks organized by department and instructor. Some instructors do not require textbooks or assign textbooks not available in the bookstore. If you are confused about what books to buy, wait for the first day and refer to the syllabus or ask the instructor. If you ever forget your student ID number (SID), you can quickly get it through the GRC website in the Online Services tab. This is also where you can change your PIN number if it is ever stolen. You can also find every issue of Green River College’s award-winning student newspaper The Current on Issuu.com and our website, thegrcurrent.com.
