LETTER F RO M T H E EDI TOR It’s truly is the most wonderful time of the year! Not only because we get to put together the ultimate gift giving guide for Cape Cod (over 100 items all from local shops!), but also because it is a great opportunity to shop local, at your favorite small shop or somewhere new to you, and make an investment in your community. By purchasing your holiday gifts locally you are not only making a difference in the business’ bottom line, but you are also enabling that business to then reinvest their dollars into Cape Cod by employing locals, using local services, and supporting local organizations. In these pages we provide gift ideas for women with many different types of interests, as well as for guys, girls, boys, baby and of course, the family pet. We also invited one of Cape Cod’s best performers (Chantal!) to model this season’s trends for us, as well as interview one of the Cape’s newest boutique owners, and pick the one piece you must have in your closet. Enjoy the issue and keep shopping local! Dress Locally,

RUN WAY RUNDOWN Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Winter Colors BOSSA NOVA

Hemline: Flowy Skirts

Flowy skirts are usually reserved for summer, but as a maxi style, worn with tights and paired with a chunky sweater, turtleneck and boots or booties, they are an absolutely perfect addition to your closet for the winter season.

Print: Polka Dots

Polka dots make their mark on runways every few years, and always add a bit of whimsy into your wardrobe. Black and white or multicolor, contrasting large and small, they can be a small detail on a top or on a dress as an all-encompassing print.

Material: Velvet

Velvet can be seen as the material that just won’t quit. When it began to show up in runway shows a couple of years ago, it was being used in ways reminiscent of the 1990s, but this winter it is feeling a bit more luxe, whether it be in a simple t-shirt style, leggings or a long dress.

Neckline: Victorian Neck

What has often been seen as a conservative style, the Victorian neckline is now viewed as elegant and sensual. The high neck, lace and ruffle details can transform a simple blouse into a fashion piece that looks great paired with jeans or a slim fitting pencil skirt.

ST YL E P RO F IL E Can you tell us about your background? Where did you grow up, go to school, and how did you end up on Cape Cod? My early years weren’t exactly “normal!" My father was a Taiwanese Diplomat and we traveled and lived in a lot of areas, but I would say my most of my education was in Taiwan and I ended up studying international relations and foreign affairs at University. I've had varying jobs over the years from working for the Portuguese Government in Macau, stints in Korea doing mergers and acquisitions, and interpretation work in Hong Kong. The common theme in all these jobs was that I could speak, read, and write fluently in four languages. This was a huge After growing up and working abroad in tech and the bonus and I learned so much from working with so many fashion industry, Nicole Palmer moved to Cape Cod with different people and organizations. her family, and decided to put all of her experience, passion Ending up on Cape Cod is another interesting story and love of all things beautiful into her concept boutique, as well! Back in 2000 I was living and working in Hong Underground Fashion. Nicole just celebrated one year in Kong and I met my neighbor one day who happened to her Falmouth store, and is looking ahead to the future. be an airline pilot living in Hong Kong, but originally

from Falmouth. My neighbor ended up becoming my husband and we started a family. Over the years we would spend summers on the Cape, and back in 2016 my husband had the opportunity to transfer back to the USA. Although we could live anywhere, we decided that being on the Cape was best for us. We already had friends and family there, plus we felt it would be a great place to raise our son.

retail store, so I felt it was time. The day after I received my green card I opened up a company and started the process of opening my own boutique. You call Underground Fashion a "concept boutique" what does that mean to you and your customers? Good question and here’s a simple answer: my concept was to create a store on the Cape that made the customer feel as if they were in a “big city boutique" getting a personalized shopping experience. Our space is small, not subject to a lot of foot traffic (it is located in Home Port, surrounded mostly by doctors’ offices), and very cozy. I figured if I did a great job buying collections, my customers could come in, make themselves comfortable, and take their time in choosing what’s best for them. No rushing, no pressure, and relax (coffee and champagne are always readily available)! Shopping should be fun and comfortable, and I think I achieved that because our data shows a huge percentage of our sales are from repeat customers.

How did you end up in the fashion industry? What has your experience been? I’ve always loved anything to do with fashion, and have felt I’ve always had a pretty good eye when it came to putting outfits together and seeing trends. My first foray into the business side of fashion was when I started my own fashion label “Nicole Liu Designs.” I was producing scarves and handbags based out of Hong Kong. It was fun, but a lot of work dealing with both the manufacturing side and getting product into stores. I then went on to become a distributor for a major US brand for the Asia/ Pacific area. Being a distributor was great experience to see how both the buying and selling sides worked. How do you decide on the brands you carry? How do you find them? When did you decide to open up your own store? I’m constantly cruising the web searching for new and Before I moved to the Cape I told my husband that I exciting collections. It’s a great way to see the trends and would be opening a small boutique (not really open what's the next big thing. I tend to carry a mix of well-known for discussion)! I’m the type of person that needs to be brands, as well as the unique designers from both the US busy and has to have a challenge. I've never operated a and Europe. I go on my buying trips twice a year with Paris

47

and New York being the main conventions I attend. At first I was overwhelmed with all the options and I made the mistake of overbuying for my first spring/ summer. I think there was a bit of anxiety about running out of stock and the excitement of going on my biggest shopping trip of my life! Since then, I’ve gotten much more efficient in the process of sourcing my collections and feel pretty good about how I do it. I wouldn’t say there’s an exact science to what I buy. I guess that’s where having a good eye comes in. You just celebrated one year in your Falmouth location - what are some of your favorite things about owning a local boutique? Although it’s a lot more work than I envisioned, I love the fact that I’m bringing beautiful clothing to the Cape. My clients are becoming my friends, and it’s a constant learning experience. How would you describe Cape Cod style and how is it different from the rest of the world? Because of my husband's job, we have been very fortunate to travel the world. No matter where you go there will always be something unique in the way people wear clothing, but one thing is constant: women love fashion. There may be subtle differences between Hong Kong, Dubai, and Boston, but in general the magazines, websites, and commercials have developed global fashion awareness That said, Cape Cod style is a bit different, it definitely has the “preppy” feel to it, which is great, but I think we need a bit more cosmopolitan flare for the ladies, hence Underground Fashion! 48
