LETTER F RO M T H E EDI TOR

W

elcome to our every-other-year (so far) jewelry issue!

You know we’re obsessed with clothes. Especially those that we find at locally owned boutiques. But you also know that we know that it’s not all about pants, tops, dresses and skirts. Jewelry is not just an accessory; it can be an outfit changer or an outfit maker. Add a piece with sparkle or shine, edge or sass, and you’re showing the world not just your style, but also a little bit about your mood and personality at any given time. We were able to ask some of our local jewelry boutiques to lend us some of their most fun, funky, and fashionable earrings, necklaces, and bracelets to pair with some of the newest spring styles found in Cape Cod stores for our feature photo shoot Art is in Fashion, and they came through with some gems (pun intended!). Enjoy the issue, and remember to shop local!

RUN WAY RUNDOWN Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Spring Colors ULTRA VIOLET

BLOOMING DAHLIA

Hemline: Pencil Skirt

Every closet should have at least a black pencil skirt hanging in it, as it is practically the most versatile article of clothing you can own. This season will be your opportunity to add a hot pink one or a floral patterned one to the mix.

Trend: Polo

It’s the ultimate classic style (especially here on Cape Cod!), but now polo shirts have made their way to high fashion runways with ruffles or a peplum details added for a more feminine look.

Detail: Fringe

When you think of fringe you might picture a flapper dress, and while that style is always on trend in our book, this year fringe is showing up as an all over detail on dresses and coats, but also as a small detail on bags and t-shirts.

Print: Wild Garden

Floral prints always have a presence on the runway, and this season is no exception, but this time think of an all-over print that is sweet, feminine and more micro than we've seen in the past couple of seasons - more like a field of wildflowers.

Art is in Fashion Located just inside the Old Schoolhouse in Barnstable Village, Chalkboard Studios is home to some of the most talented and contemporary artists on Cape Cod. We thought it was only fitting to use the striking and captivating paintings of Jackie Reeves, Abby Fay, James Wolf, and Richard Neal as the inspiration and backdrop for our photo shoot dedicated to the striking and captivating jewelry from local boutiques across the Cape.

ST YL E P RO F IL E Tell us about your background and your connection to the Cape. I was born and raised in upstate NY. My only connection to the Cape was my father. He spent summer vacations here with his parents and siblings, took a course in Woods Hole through Union College and brought my mother here for their honeymoon.

Aimee Guthinger

How did you get into the bra business? After college, I moved to Newport, RI and spent most of my 20s there enjoying the close knit community and small town feel of the island. Newport is actually where I met my first 'real' expert bra fitter, Deborah Winthrop. It was a life changing experience! I used to joke and say life has never given me lemons for lemonade, it gave me grapefruits, so I made grapefruit juice. Debbie was the first one to teach me how to do that properly and the result changed my perspective on my own body image. You may remember her from her Bedroom I’s Boutique The memory of that sliding door experience is what in Osterville, which Aimee Guthinger owned for over a I have carried with me throughout my tenure in this decade, helping every shape, size, age, bride, new mom industry. find the perfect bra for their needs. She closed her brick and mortar store in 2016, not quite sure what was next. You owned a brick and mortar store for over a decade And after a two year hiatus she has decided to take her in Osterville, what inspired you to evolve it into a show…er, inventory, on the road… with a mobile boutique mobile boutique? that will offer private fittings and parties for people who Yes, I owned a brick & mortar store from 2004-2016. want knowledgeable and dedicated service while also It was one of the most rewarding experiences of shopping local. my life on several different levels - all having to do

with the relationships I formed. First and foremost your relationships with those who support you: your bankers, your landlord, you vendors, your maintenance contractors, the staff you select to support your vision and finally your business peers. I truly believe the quality of your customer relationships is a direct result of the foundation you create to support you and your business. With brick and mortar, I found this was especially true because I approached the store itself as an extension of my home. I spent much more time there than I did at home! There were a number of reasons that I chose to close

the store in October 2016, but exhaustion really was at the heart of that decision. There were a couple of things that startled me in that process of closing though and I'd really like to share them as the basis of where Bedroom I's Mobile came to fruition. I didn't sell my store, I closed it. I hired a service to sell off as much of my inventory and stock as possible and donated a great deal of what was left over to Barnstable High School for young women in need. During the initial sale, I was stunned to be receiving a call each night from the woman I had hired to begin this process for me. She would ask me to be sure to listen to the voicemails, and to stop in and read the handwritten notes my long time customers were leaving on their receipts for me. She went onto say she had never seen anything quite like it. It brings tears to my eyes just recalling the messages I found day after day. Much like my first fitter, Deborah had done for me, I had made a difference for others and I'm not sure I ever fully understood that I had been appreciated until I closed. That was extremely humbling. So, I closed the brick and mortar and took some much needed time off, but my phone never stopped ringing. Customers called then and still, asking for fittings. I did what I could to make suggestions and give advice and then when it was time to dissolve the corporation at the end of 2017, I turned off the phone line and the most amazing thing happened, I continued to receive requests for fittings. Without a phone, a website or a Facebook

page representing my services, people were tracking me down through my personal social media and writing messages like; I'm not sure you'll remember me, but I need your help... and from there Bedroom I's Mobile was born. What is your driving philosophy behind Bedroom I’s Mobile Boutique? Instead of the customer having to visit me, I carry a full range of styles both with underwire and without wire to the customer wherever she is now. I refer to these styles as my curated collection. I have been fitting bras for over 13 years and as a result I know what to look for in a bra to ensure that my customers get the best support, comfort and value. There's a reason most woman have a drawer full of bras they do not wear. Often they were purchased on impulse in a lingerie department offering a sea of styles to overwhelm the shopper. It doesn't have to be that way and it doesn't have to cost a fortune to have a fitter show you the right way. My rule of thumb is 3 basics; one to wear, one to wash and one to rest. As

36

women, we simply need to remember this is a garment we wear every day. It's not a luxury, it's an investment piece. If you choose to wear only one bra day after day instead of rotating your 3 basics, it will not last long. You may continue to wear it, but in time it will cease to offer any comfort or support. How would you describe Cape Cod style? That's a fantastic question because my tag line has always been; Laying a feminine foundation to Cape Cod Casual. Cape Cod style to me is a lot like Casual Friday's in the workplace. It's comfortable, in the sense that it is unrestrictive and allows the wearer to do a number of activities throughout the day; be it walking on the beach, getting down on the ground and working in the garden or taking in the back 9 out on the golf course. Most women would enter my store and tell me they had not worn pantyhose since leaving the city and I would laugh thinking; that's such a great analogy for CC style. The ladies gave up their hose and the men gave up their socks at the bridge.Â
