SPRING 2016
The Guide to Fashion & Shopping on Cape Cod
COMPLIMENTARY
1
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR 2016 is off to a busy start for us at CQ HQ, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s happening and what’s to come. Early in the year we announced our collaboration with CapeCodOnline.com – the newly minted lifestyle companion site to the Cape Cod Times. We will be writing content for their ‘Shopping’ section as well as providing opportunities for local businesses to take advantage of their highly targeted and trafficked advertising. And we will be furthering our mission of encouraging consumers to shop, dine and do business locally all along the way. Our latest exciting news is that The Current Quarterly will be sponsoring a series of fashion inspired events throughout the month of May. We will kick off Style Makers Month with our 4th Annual Fashion Show to benefit WE CAN; the month will culminate with a Red Carpet event at the Figawi Ball on May 21. Read our feature story inside for more information about both of those events, as well as the other fun and unique events we have planned!

Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.
Spring Colors ROSE QUARTZ PEACH
Material: Textured
After a winter full of slush and gray-skies, spring will be a much needed breath of fresh air. And to embrace change and try something new (like how what our calendars will soon be doing), when out shopping, perhaps try a textured material to push your boundaries. Whether it be tweed or light wool, texture is a very trendy material for this upcoming season and when done in light fabrics, it can add an extra edge to any look that. This extra layer of texture will add another layer of something special to any ensemble that will help you stand out amongst the crowd. For the workplace, a blazer in any textured material will help create the vibe of sophisticated and edgy. And as for a dressy look, something as simple as a lace overlay on a cocktail dress crafts an elevated, chic essence that will keep the look fresh and exciting.
Detail: Ruffles
BUTTERCUP LILAC GRAY ICED COFFEE FIESTA 4
Ruffles are taking over every realm of fashion for the upcoming season. What used to be a delicate and little-girlish detail has now grown up into refined sophisticated layers, while still having a sense of flirtation. With tiers added to a hemline or even details on a handbag, ruffles are appearing everywhere. Dissociate the once heavy and, at times, tacky vision that ruffles once had, and instead, envision a light and flowy detail that’s perfect for the spring season. Ruffles have matured into a refined statement that anyone can make. Whether light and frilly or bold and leather, ruffles no longer imply cheesy and instead, declare a statement of elegance. Try a intricate ruffled cocktail dress to try something new or even a blouse with short tiered sleeves to welcome the spring season in with style.
Sleeves: Billowy
When the word billowy is heard, there are several looks that could possibly come to mind. Maybe you envision an 18th century night shirt or a 70s disco girl doing the hustle? Whatever the image you have in your mind now, forget it and instead, replace it with chic, romantic sleeves that are on trend for this season. Billowy sleeves in light fabrics have been spotted on runways all over, and have a romantic and elegant vibe crafting a unique silhouette, reminiscent of the Victorian era. If you find yourself shying away from sleeves that pack such a statement into one look, try a lightweight blouse with a small billowing detail. This top would be perfect for the office and would still provide a sense of romance to add a trendy layer to any ensemble.
Style: Slip Dress
In recent years, the descriptor “It Girl” has been tossed around so frequently when discussing up-andcoming women that there could be some confusion. Some may be at a loss as to what the criteria of an “It Girl” is, perhaps even what it means to be one, but regardless of one’s standing in fashion, it should be known that she oozes nonchalance. And the dress that the “It Girl” indisputable has in her wardrobe that declares casual nonconformity is the slip dress. This intimate-inspired and easy to wear dress style has been spotted on runways all over and is the perfect look for spring. With several characteristics of 90s fashion, the slip dress has made its return and we are welcoming it with our closet doors wide open. For a daytime look, take a slip dress and style it with a denim jacket or lightweight blazer to create a casual yet adventure-ready outfit. This easy dress style will keep things relaxed yet it will still leave you will the ability to turn heads for this upcoming season.

STYLE PROFILE Cape Cod by Amanda Converse
C
ape Cod can get a bad rap when it comes to its fashion scene with outsiders assuming
everyone here wears Nantucket reds and boat shoes, or locals assuming they have to go off Cape to find stylish and trendy clothing. Part of the reason The Current Quarterly was started was to dispel these myths, and this spring season we decided to take our quest of showing off the Cape’s fierce fashion riches a few steps further, and bring our own version of a Fashion Week to our coastal community. There is no need to dream of going to New York, Paris or Milan this May when we bring you Style Makers Month and a series of unique and fun fashion events right here at home. All month long you can visit local restaurants like Embargo and Naked Oyster and see how one of their dishes inspired an outfit drawn by our favorite illustrator, Amy Szep. We’ll also be telling you what our favorite local boutiques and spots are up to and more details about our events as the month goes on, so follow us on facebook and Instagram for up to the minute info! 14

The event includes a runway show of fashions from some of our favorite local boutiques, as well as pop up shops where clothing, accessories, and other goods are available for purchase. There are also plenty of opportunities for attendees to donate to the very worthy cause.

MAKING A STATEMENT
S
tatement jewelry is always in style and can make or break an outfit. Cape Cod certainly does not lack for local boutiques that have a unique and abundant selection of the current trends, such as bold pieces in classic gold, black and white patterns, bright blues and greens, and those with a more organic feel.

WARDROBE WANT Formal Gown
I
by Amanda Converse
t’s true that Cape Cod is known around the world for its casual and comfortable style, but the spring season brings with it formal events like proms, as well as more “adult” galas like the Figawi Charity Ball and black tie weddings, and these require Cape Codders to step up their style game to one that may involve satin, sequins, and strapless dresses. Local spots like Sposabella Bridal (Hyannis), Port Cargo (Hyannis), Beth Bishop (Orleans), Treasure Chest (Falmouth), and Frances Francis (Orleans + Wellfleet), Violet’s (Chatham), and Chatham Beauty and Bridal (Chatham) can help you meet these needs, and here are a few tips to help you find the perfect dress for a perfect night: BARI JAY FORMAL GOWN found at Sposabella Bridal
Try on a lot of dresses. Everyone has heard the “rules” for dressing for your body shape, but we believe you should try on as many dresses as you can and want to. Don’t go for an empire waist simply because you are an apple shape or an a-line skirt because you’re supposedly a pear shape. Just as every female body is different, so are formal dresses. It might take a lot of time to find “the one,” but it is worth it! Invest in good undergarments. Some call them spanx or girdles, some call them shapewear or smoothers, but regardless of you shape or size, wearing undergarments can make or break any dream dress. Good undergarments will help the fabric slide nicely over your body, as well as help you to avoid any bulges that may occur from waistbands, seams, and other underpinnings. Show off your favorite assets. If you like your legs, wear a short dress. If you like to show off your décolletage, a dress with a plunging neckline is for you. If you like your shoulders and neck, go for a strapless dress. And for those of you who like your mid riff, there are plenty of dresses with cut outs strategically placed for your to show off your killer abs. Make sure you're comfortable. Trust your instincts, if you feel like a dress isn’t “you,” then it probably isn’t. Reflect on your style and what kind of look you’re going for – is it whimsical? Sophisticated? Understated? Flashy? Red carpet ready? Find a dress that reflects that style, because when you are comfortable and feel the most like yourself, you are definitely the most beautiful! 37
