YOUR GUIDE TO SHOPPING ON CAPE COD | SUMMER 2014

hen people ask me about the beginnings of The Current Quarterly, I always tell them

that I could not have started a fashion magazine anywhere but here on Cape Cod. Not only is the community incredibly supportive, but it is also open to and accepting of new concepts and ideas. The Cape is a great place to be an entrepreneur. Because the Cape has fostered my (somewhat surprising) entrepreneurial spirit, I have tried to do the same in these pages. In addition to showcasing items from locally owned shops and locally made products, I have specifically asked local entrepreneurs to model in the feature photo shoots in this issue. Check out this group of creative and ambitious individuals (including our first male model!) who were ready and willing to travel up and down Route 6, and wear gowns that weigh over 10 pounds to show off the summer fashions that can be found here. And as always, Dress Local,

Fabric Treatment: Mesh

Sporty chic has had a huge comeback and with that mesh has been given a makeover. This netted fabric has shed the uncomfortable image of a gym-class pinny and has become a fashionable fabric treatment that has graced runways all over the world. This casual yet sexy use of fabric shows off skin while still remaining refined. Wear mesh over a crop top or bralette to create a peek-a-boo effect that gives off an effortless vibe while still looking put together. Mesh can also be found on sleeves of a boxy jersey top for a more tomboyish look that still manages to convey an aura of sophistication.

Print: Bold Floral

Hemline: Asymetrical

When the term floral is used to describe the warm seasonal trends, it’s hard to contain an eye roll and not exclaim “Duh!” But this summer, the classic floral print has been given a refreshing twist. By making the print bolder, a more graphic edge is given off that sets it apart from previous trends. It still has the femininity of a floral pattern but with a more eye-catching effect that will certainly turn some heads. Whether it’s the pattern on an edgy bomber jacket or the print on comfortable palazzo pants, bold floral is guaranteed turn some heads this summer.

Hemlines on the runway have been given a slight makeover, with designers adding a bit of flare to the typically straight line at the hem of your skirt and adding angles – producing an “origami” effect. This structured asymmetrical hemline looks intricate and modern and has completely reformed the classic mini skirt. Sexy but not risqué, this look manages to be flirty and chic at the same time. Try an origami skirt in a floral print to show off your killer summer legs while still looking refined and feminine.

Neckline: Crewneck

A simple neckline like the crew neck has been on trend for decades. It is a staple in many closets and can be styled so many ways. Crew necks are a classic that have lasted throughout fashion and never fail to send a sophisticated vibe. For an easy classy look, take a crew neck tee and throw on a chunky statement necklace to look preppy yet still casual. For a more contemporary look, choose a crew neck with some rhinestones or a funky pattern.

Current Beauty Beauty Bits

Tips, tricks, advice and adages for having fun with your hair and makeup by Emma Childs

You will have tousled waves just like a mermaid, without having to spend hours at the beach. • Give your hair a break from the damage washing can cause. Just use some dry shampoo on old hair for a quick refresher and instant texture. • If your skin is parched after a long day at the beach, moisturize with aloe vera for some much needed hydration. • Waterproof mascara is great in the summer for whatever water activities the day has planned. • Primers are great a sweat-proof method to make your makeup stay put all day.

• If you’re struggling to find a new look, take a look at some beauty icons. Audrey Hepburn’s classic cat eye never fails. • Sun protection is not something to mess around with! Sunscreen (especially without added chemicals) should always be worn for a day out in the sun. • For those laid back summer days, swap a BB cream for your heavy foundation to give your skin some room to breathe. • To get easy, beachy waves just spray in some sea salt spray to your hair, scrunch, and shake.

challenge, especially since every local boutique on Cape Cod has many from which to choose. The key is finding the one that is right for your figure. If you have a tummy, choose an A-line or a shift dress. If you have a small bust, find a style that defines your waist. If you are petite, make sure you find one that is not too long and doesn’t overwhelm your frame. If you are trying to add curves to your otherwise straight frame, try to find a sundress with a belt or

Style P rofile by Amanda Converse

CQ: How did The Tailor Project come to be? KH: Amy and I were having one of our many pow-wows at the studio late last year and she mentioned a yearlong

L

ocal sustainable fashion and lifestyle writer Amy Dufault found herself bothered one day by the

consumption habits of teenagers, including her own 13-year old daughter. She came to realize that she had similar habits in some areas of her life, particularly when it came to filling her closet. So, to help herself better understand her own desire to want, she committed to a fashion fast for 2014. No new clothing, shoes or jewelry - for an entire year.

curious as to why she was committing to this. It was for a variety of reasons, but ultimately it was in response to the destruction fast fashion has had on the industry, people's welfare and our society as a whole. I asked her, "Would you like to know how fast fashion has affected the tailoring industry?" Intrigued, she responded, "Yes. Tell me how fast fashion has affected the tailoring industry." I replied, "Why spend $10 to hem or repair a pair of pants when you can purchase a brand new pair for about the same price?" This was the birth of

46

AD: I just happened to meet Kathryn around the same time [I decided to go on a fashion fast] and she told me that her business as a tailor had suffered from cheap fashion being sold in stores like Forever 21 or H&M and how nobody wanted to fix anything anymore; it was easier to toss and buy something new. With that, we both had an ‘Ah Ha’ moment where we combined my fashion fast with her revamping my closet to show people the versatility of a tailor and how exciting (and necessary) it can be to know one! CQ: Can you both tell me about your background/ interest in fashion?

dye world, pinch hit running events in New York City and write for The Guardian on sustainable fashion. KH: I started in the industry at the age of 16 when I apprenticed under an Italian tailor. I studied fashion, worked as a seamstress and opened my first tailoring business in my early twenties. In my late twenties I mastered my trade and have had multiple businesses since. As my children grew in age and life became less demanding on the home front, I decided to launch my first modest collection of ecofashion in 2012. AD: My opinions on fashion has changed through the years, one would think pretty drastically, but when I do look back to when I first started in the industry, it was always the people who wore things differently or just had a good story that attracted me to fashion. Be it a designer or a person on the street, I love seeing people wearing things they love. CQ: What have you learned about yourselves, as well as the fashion world, through this initiative? AD: I am now deeply engaged in the psychology behind why we consume at an alarming pace. How is it we can want so much and yet not consider how things get to us so cheaply? This goes for food or fashion. There is plenty of information out there about the ethics and environmental consequences of buying fast fashion, yet we still do it. And the strange thing is it is only getting faster and cheaper. I mentioned to a colleague the other day the next step would be that people would accept slavery to get fashion as something has to be cut out to make prices even lower. I do not think this is such a far-fetched idea and it scares the hell out of me that it came out of my mouth. If one is addicted to doing something, like

I always like to tell people that I know everybody who made what I wear and I so enjoy opening my closet to see all their work. The Tailor Project has made me realize even more what designers really fit my lifestyle and what I actually wear. As a writer I am constantly impressed by the young women out there pushing the boundaries of design

50

CQ How would each of you describe Cape Cod style? KH: Functional. At least that's how I see it for the most part. It is exciting, though, to see lots of new independent local designers making their mark. AD: Safe. I have never felt that Cape Codders have the courage to step outside of the box. There's no doubt that women know how to dress beautifully here or that men have the know-how to pull together a clean cut look but as for expressing themselves any more than looking nice? It's a rarity to see but you bet I tell them when I see them!
