LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Ahhhhh… summertime on Cape Cod means sandy, salty days, celebratory nights, and good times with friends from near and far. In this issue we’ve given some love to the stars and stripes, shown you summer’s hottest trends and our favorite statement earrings. We’ve also shown you some of the best ways to be active on Cape Cod, as well as how to look stylish doing whatever you choose to do. We hope that one of the things on your summer bucket list is to do a bit of shopping local. The shops and their keepers are part of what makes the Cape a special place and without them our resort area would be just like anywhere else with nice beaches and sunny skies. Use the shopping guide on the second to last page to find the best places to go with your friends and your out-of-town guests, and tell them we sent you! Dress Local,

RUNWAY RUNDOWN by Emma Childs Illustrations by Amy Szep

Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Summer Colors LIGHT CORAL

Style: Shirt Dress

When choosing a look for a summer day, a lot of elements must come into consideration: weather, comfort, style, etc. But, for this upcoming season, there is a simple solution to all of those components in three, simple words: the shirt dress. Essentially a longer version of the infamous button-down, the shirt dress is about as classic as they come. Airy yet structured, the shirt dress is a more professional version of the sundress that still has the easy nature for a daytime look. Pair your shirt dress with flats to create a perfect look for exploring Cape Cod and then when the sun goes down, swap them for killer heels to transform your ensemble into an outfit that is ready for night on the town.

LEMON Pattern: Embroidery

PERSIMMON

TAUPE BLUE HYDRANGEA MOONSTONE BLUE 4

Marveling at haute couture and drooling over runway looks is a common past-time for this generation of enthused fashion fanatics but with this upcoming season, there’s a certain pattern that’s creating a bridge from high-end style to mainstream looks: embroidery. This pattern, a beautiful skill that has been around for centuries is transitioning into mainstream, everyday wear with the help of subtle detailing on cocktail gowns or on the sleeves of a bomber jacket. Embroidery acts as a way to elevate your style all while keeping it in budget and on trend. This summer, encapsulate a bit of high-end flair and add some embroidery to your style, whether it’s a simple flower design on a clutch purse or cutting-edge detailing along the sides of a trouser.

Detail: Lace Up

The 70’s fashion revival has given new life to many trends of the past: suede, bell bottoms, and most recently, lace-up detailing. This little embellishment is a major statement that adds a touch of vintage mixed in with a modern edge to pump up any look. From a flowing blouse to summer sandals, a lace up detail is a nod to the days of Ali Macgraw, while keeping it cutting edge with new incorporations. And while the alluring detail can be exposing when in a plunging top or cocktail dress, the embellishment can also be very demure if place subtly on the lower sides of a pencil skirt or in a delicate manner on a flowy blouse. This detail is a perfect statement to add to your summer wardrobe to keep things fresh and flirty in the hot sun.

Palate: Monochromatic

If you’re looking for an easy way to refresh your look and stand out, instead of gravitating towards several different colors, stick to one shade. A monochromatic palate is one of the latest trends that make an individual stand out in a simple way to emit a chic vibe. If you feel that wearing the same shade is too confining, try pieces in a different hue but still fall under the same umbrella of color. For example, the gradient of a forest green trouser paired with a mint green blouse is guaranteed to turn some heads. Or if you want to opt for a simpler look, an all-white look or a “woutfit,” if you please, is the perfect statement to create a bold yet understated style to elevate any look to a glamorous and put-together level.

A SHOE BY ANY OTHER NAME

Juliette Bench in the offices of Cape Cod Shoe Supply

ape Cod has been the starting inspiration for countless creative individuals. Its nautical presence, vivacious energy, and unique location have fostered several ideas, ranging from descriptive poetry about our beaches to iconic portraits that fully capture the beauty of our famed sunsets. The inspiring nature of the Cape is indisputable and two stand-out shoe companies, like many before them, have tapped into to the inspiring quality of our home and settled on Cape Cod as their muse. The Cape Cod Shoe Supply is a flip flop and accessories brand that seeks inspiration from the iconic Cape Cod summers. “We celebrate

the lighter and brighter side of luxury by making beautiful, colorful, and comparable shoes that are simple and easy to remind us of summer days! The Cape means ‘summer’ to us, and summer is a mindset, not just a season,” said Juliette Bench, president and founder of Cape Cod Shoe Supply. For Bench’s starting inspiration, all it took for her was a classic piece of Cape Cod jewelry. “I had the idea for the company in 2010, when I was still working in New York in the footwear industry. I wanted a slower pace of life, and I really wanted to move to Cape Cod,” said Bench. “I had one of the ‘sailor's knot’ bracelets with me after a great 9

Cape Cod Shoe Supply weekend on Cape and the idea came to me to make a fun flip flop with the braided rope.” Since then, Cape Cod Shoe Supply has maintained the same manifesto: Chart a New Course - Ditch your “It” Bag- Toss your stilettos - Move to the Cape - Swim in the Sea - Watch the Stars - Laugh a lot - Be kind Don’t rush - Summer Every Day. The Cape Cod Shoe Supply has retailers like Design Works in Yarmouth Port, Mahi Gold in Chatham and Three Buoys in Harwich Port. “You can always find something that you won't find anywhere else in these stores! It's important to support these small boutiques because they are what make our Main Streets vibrant,” Bench said. As for the designs, Bench gets ideas from summering here on Cape. “For me, it's really about the summers I spend on Cape Cod with family and friends,” Bench added. “The carefree days of summer are so special. I try to incorporate that feeling of easy and beautiful simplicity into my designs.” 10

In addition to our warm season, Bench initially sought inspiration from other local artists like photographer Christopher Seufert and artist Richard Koury who had a gallery and studio in Chatham, and from whom she rented an office. “I think it's important for communities to preserve that area of commerce and make sure artists can love and work on the cape. Artists are a large part of what give Cape Cod communities their culture and charm.” Pamela Irving, creator of Cape Clogs, took a European idea and added her Cape twist to create a booming business. Based on the Cape, Cape Clogs offers a wide range of stylish yet comfortable clogs for men, women, and children. All designs are based off of Irving’s Cape Cod lifestyle and each

orthopedic foot beds are made of Northern Europe Alder wood. “It all began in 2005 when my cousin, who was visiting from Sweden, brought a pair of clogs over to the US as a gift. Then I had the “ah-ha” moment when everyone was asking where can they could get a pair of their own,” Irving said. “Living on Cape Cod gave me the inspiration to run my business and the wonderful title Cape Clogs was a perfect fit.” In June 2006, Irving formed Cape Clogs, Inc. and is the designer, distributor, and marketer of the Swedish orthopedic clogs. Irving said, “Clogs have been around for 150 years and they are now a dying trade in Sweden. I am fortunate to have 3 manufacturers that I import from. They are multi-family generations that have been in the clogs business for many years.” Every pair of clogs is handmade in Sweden so no two pairs are alike. This past January, Cape Clogs, Inc. reached their 10th anniversary and Irving was ecstatic at reaching this milestone, “I feel very proud to have been able to achieve this goal, and I have many colleagues and loyal customers to thank along the way,” Irving added. And all along the way she has figured out how to thank the community by which she is inspired. Over the past 10 years, Cape Clogs has donated around $20,000 to many philanthropic organizations, including the Ellie Fund, the American Heart Association, Hope in Bloom, the Doug Flutie Foundation, and GirlyGIRL PARTS (in conjunction with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute). “It definitely has been an exciting journey, and I have been blessed to be able to say I enjoy what I do in life,” Irving explained. As well as creative ideas sourced from the Cape, both Bench and Irving are fully aware of the importance of our local businesses and continue to stimulate both our culture and economy with their companies. “Local businesses bring the community together and in America we need to have more this happening if we are to survive into the generations to come,” Irving said. 11

STYLE PROFILE

Emma Childs

C

ape Cod native and recent Barnstable High School graduate Emma Childs has been The Current Quarterly’s intern since she was 14 years old. Admittedly we thought we were giving the job to her older sister when a young Emma showed up, but we can’t imagine the last three years without her. She began her internship with us helping out on photo shoots and cataloging featured products, and now she runs the backstage at our fashion shows and has her own byline. And this past fall she published her own magazine, Childs Play, as the culmination of her Senior Independent Study. We will miss her incredibly when she heads off to Fordham University in New York City to get her degree in Communications and Fashion Design, but we have no doubt she will excel and succeed in whatever she does and wherever she goes. 20

CQ: When did you discover your passion for the fashion world? EC: I will never forget watching Project Runway with my mom and the joy I felt from watching the designers pour themselves into their pieces. I would find myself on the edge of my seat, watching the looks strut down the runway and I felt a spark light inside of me. Soon afterwards, fashion became a constant in my life. CQ: What role has fashion played in your life? EC: From a young age, fashion has always intrigued me and has been a source of fun. While grocery shopping with my mother, I was that little girl strutting through the canned food aisle, wearing a pink tutu and glitter rain boots. Even at that age, it was fun to make a statement. Fashion has always been a source of vivacious energy in my life and it continues to be my outlet of choice for emotional expression. CQ: Where do you see yourself in the industry in the future? EC: At age 14, I was fortunate enough to become an editorial intern at The Current Quarterly and with Amanda’s trust, my passion for fashion media truly took off. I’ll never understand why she trusted a pubescent, young girl to be involved with such a fashionable publication but I am forever grateful for her leap of faith. In my senior year of high school, I also created

my own fashion and art magazine, Childs Play. Each issue contains several articles, art pieces, and three photoshoots and Childs Play has further solidified my desire to be involved with fashion media. CQ: How do you think growing up on Cape Cod has influenced your own style? EC: Growing up on Cape Cod means I was surrounded with lots of beach-ready looks. And while I do love a good cover-up, the nautical wear pushed me to seek out other looks and I think that was how I found my style. The casual, nonchalance of Cape Cod has trickled into my everyday style and I have a feeling that will stick with me. CQ: How would you describe Cape Cod style? EC: Cape Cod style does not have one single descriptor. It’s everything from a vintage, bold jumpsuit to a trendy, little black dress. However, one thing I have noticed while living on Cape Cod is that every piece is accessorized with passion and dedication from the wearer. There isn’t a sole adjective to describe Cape Cod style but there is a common thread of ardor amongst the people. Growing up on Cape has enabled me to be surrounded by enthusiastic individuals with a flair for life and this energy is found in their looks as well. CQ: What have been your greatest lessons and favorite achievements during your time with The Current Quarterly? EC: The first memory that stands out is definitely the first fashion show I ever worked on. It was just like your average fashion show; lots of beautiful clothes, a wonderful stage, and a lively group of senior citizen models. These bold and beautiful women were incredibly entertaining to work with and although they may not have fit the typical mold of fashionable, that certainly did not stop them from proudly strutting their stuff. Their joy for fashion has stayed with me and taught me an invaluable lesson: have fun and be confident in yourself.

WARDROBE WANT Beach Cover Up

F

by Amanda Converse

Tunics are probably the most commonly sought after cover wear. They are usually in a lightweight cotton fabric with sleeves for great arm coverage and a modest v at the neckline and they are usually long enough to cover your bum. The great thing about tunics as beach cover ups is they can easily be paired with jeans or shorts for an adaptable look.

inding the perfect swimsuit can be one of the hardest feats on earth. Fortunately finding the perfect cover up for said swimsuit isn’t quite that hard. So many great local shops like Black Eel Outfitters (Dennis), Mocean (Mashpee Commons), Nicholas Harrison Gallery (Wellfleet), and Savvy on Main (Orleans) carry a variety of types of cover ups beyond a simple sarong or the traditional maxi dress or mini dress such as the kaftan, tunic, kimono, in a variety a prints like tie dye, bold florals along with summery embroidery and creative color blocking. But in our humble fashion opinion all beach cover ups should have two qualities: they must be light and flowy, and they must be able to transition from the beach to running errands to a backyard barbeque, or a night on the town. ESCAPADA BEACH COVER UP Savvy on Main, Orleans | $88

48

Caftans can be mistaken for a muumuu, but we promise they are stylish and even flattering. Yes, they are seemingly long and shapeless pieces of fabric (often times in beautiful prints), but that’s the great thing about caftans – they can be molded and manipulated with belts, brooches, and jewelry to make them appropriate for any occasion. Kimonos are traditionally thought of as a long and heavy Japanese garment; however in this case kimonos in this instance are short, silky cardigans with billowy sleeves. They are easy to throw on over a bathing suit and make a great piece to then transition into evening paired with a sleek maxi dress.
