2 YEAR
REINSTATEMENT
OF PLANT
INSITE Looking Forward, Not Back Five years ago, when we unleashed our first Demolition Directory on an unsuspecting demolition world, we made a conscious decision that the publication would look forward, not back. That decision was made, primarily, to differentiate ourselves from other publications that mark the year end by donning their rose-tinted spectacles and looking back nostalgically at the year just passed, conveniently glossing over any bad news that may have happened along the way. This year, more than ever, I am so glad we made that decision; because placing a positive spin on the UK demolition industry in 2019 would be virtually impossible without suspending reality altogether. 2019 will be remembered as the year in which four (at the time of writing) demolition workers died needlessly on UK demolition sites; and the year of the scaffold collapse. So, rather than raking over the dying embers of a year most of us would prefer to forget, let’s take a look at what might lie ahead. We have called upon a variety of experts in their field to look at how technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality and the Internet of Things might impact upon the demolition business of the future. Of course, although such developments are being widely discussed now, their implementation within the built environment remains a challenge for the medium to long term future; something for future generations to wrestle with. A challenge for the immediate future, however, is how the demolition industry might power its equipment if and when diesel is phased out or runs out entirely. This is a challenge that we put to five of the biggest and most innovative equipment manufacturers in the world: Case, Caterpillar, JCB, Volvo and Wacker-Neuson. Each company has its own unique take on the subject of alternative fuels. And, in this exclusive and extended feature, we explore the possible alternatives, and what this might mean for the global demolition industry. This is a fascinating feature that provides a telling and timely preview of how demolition sites might operate in the coming years. Of course, no end-of-year publication worth its salt can close without wishing its readers and subscribers a safe, happy and prosperous New Year. So may 2020 bring you all that you need, most of what you want, and just a little of what you fancy. And thank you – as always - for your continued support.

Demolition
The Age of AI Artificial Intelligence, so long the stuff of science fiction movies and literature, is rapidly making inroads into the construction arena. And, according to a new SenSat report called Infrastructure Disruption, those failing to embrace the shift towards digitisation run the risk of falling by the wayside.
4 in 10 construction firms who don’t embrace digitisation risk going out of business within ten years. For those who do modernise, however, there are significant opportunities. The global civil infrastructure market totalled $3.1 trillion in 2016, and is expected to grow by six percent on an annual basis until 2020. Inefficiencies happen across the board, but when it comes to gathering data the three major problems that construction and infrastructure organisations currently face are as follows: • • •
Information is slow to collect, meaning time to answer carries significant cost Information is siloed, meaning even if answers exist they can rarely be utilised across sources. Information is missing, often there is no digital data to describe physical world happenings
Limiting Factors
There is an increasing number of digital tools available to remedy many of these problems, but an equally wide array of barriers to business uptake. 38 percent percent of construction firms identify a lack of staff as a limiting factor to adoption new technology, according to a 2018 report. Other factors limiting the adoption of technology include; budget (38 percent) employee hesitance (34 percent) and management hesitance (30 percent).
Infrastructure disruption takes many forms. But, according to our data, there is a clear consensus on the most fundamental questions. Nearly all respondents (95 percent)
say digitisation makes their business more productive - and they are also clear that those who don’t start to take up these new technologies will be left behind. Our figures predict

In a September 2019 paper, ‘More Than Technology’, Atkins argued that the key to successful digital transformation for businesses is to win over the workforce: “It’s important to note that, in the earlier stages of digital transformation, one of the biggest barriers for many organisations will be cultural

Demolition resistance. A strong way to respond to this would be to push the benefits of ‘going digital’ to users and employees, by focusing initial efforts on one area where it’s possible to make a quick win.” Digital tools and processes that are easy to use, reduce duplication and increase collaboration, enable better decision making. Research suggests that the adoption of these tools and processes by workers and clients will be higher with less friction. Better collaboration also seems to be highly desirable for our survey respondents with 41% of our decision makers agreeing that the old ways of working are killing construction collaboration, with inefficient management (29 percent) and poorly visualised data (18 percent) also holding back teamwork.
Digital Twins
A digital twin is a digital representation of a real world location or asset infused with real time data sets from a variety of sources. The result is an accurate and up to date digital copy of the real world, in a machine-readable format. Our data shows the UK infrastructure sector has a skills gap when it comes to digital twin technology. The overwhelming majority of professionals – 99 percent - say digital twins are important, but less than half (44 percent) are currently using them. The primary area the industry thinks digital twins will add value is in keeping projects on time (55 percent agree). Although keeping projects below budget (52 percent) and reducing wastefulness (49 percent) are also key areas of value add. That time saving could translate into real business impact - as our data also shows digital twins could save over seven hours per person per month across the sector. Six

Demolition percent of respondents even went as far as to say they could shave off over 20 hours of work per person per month. Interestingly, the architecture respondents were most optimistic about improving productivity with digital twins. They estimate saving an average 9 hours 52 minutes per person per month, compared to just 6 hours 53 minutes in engineering and 7 hours and 53 minutes in construction. It’s also the more junior staff who tend to see the value in digital twin tech, as 48 percent of those at executive level say they would significantly help promote collaboration, compared to just 41 percent of board directors.
Air of Inevitability
Our research shows AI optimisation could be worth over £14 billion a year to UK infrastructure. And it’s not all just talk and unfulfilled potential: the vast majority believe AI disruption is definitely going to happen. Nine in ten of our polled infrastructure professionals believe AI will transform the industry with just under a third saying it’s ‘inevitable’. The most senior people tend to see AI in their future more – as 41 percent of board directors said AI transformation is inevitable, compared to 21 percent of senior managers. There are myriad different ways AI could disrupt the sector - but the key will almost certainly be in the way we train AI to work in real world environments on real world data. Another area we aimed to dig into with our survey respondents is where infrastructure fits into the broader AI landscape. When KPMG analysed construction companies globally, they found just
10 percent were innovative leaders in AI. But our respondents appear to disagree - as 42 percent said the infrastructure sector is a leader in AI, with 40 percent believing the UK is leading the rest of the world in terms of AI innovation. UK infrastructure tech firms will be hoping they can keep up with their peers in America - as funding in US-based construction technology start-ups has been surging recently and was up by 324 percent to nearly $3.1 billion in 2018, compared with $731 million in 2017. It may seem counterintuitive, given its status as one of the least digitised industries globally, but infrastructure is the perfect playground for artificial intelligence to learn and optimise. Current AI requires large amounts of data to learn from. These algorithms are very efficient at recognising repeating patterns, then exploiting them to further aid their decision making. Historically, the problem has been a lack of real world data to learn from. For algorithms to become ‘general’ and to find holistic solutions to real world problems, the data must be a true representation of the challenge
8
they are trying to resolve. Without real data, these AIs will learn to predict in an environment that does not represent the reality. This artificially generated data may be suitable for finding a solution to one specific question, but it will fail
Demolition to ‘generalise’ if the environment changes. This means that AIs will have a narrow understanding of our world and therefore give unreliable results. But in infrastructure, brand new physical environments are generated every year - as the physical world evolves to fulfil humanity’s needs. AIs can learn from these real life changes to continuously adapt and improve their results. Modern infrastructure is being infused with sensors that produce continuous streams of data. For humans, this data is often incomprehensible and overwhelming. But for an AI, or a cluster of AIs, these datasets are easy to compute in full – producing holistic picture of the data landscape. Learning from real time data streams creates better-trained AI
and it can make large infrastructure assets more productive, efficient, safer, and sustainable for the future. In the long-term, AI can help create better designs for buildings and cities through generative methods, as it learns from the successes and failures of other assets around the world.
Obvious Advantages
It seems obvious, but without innovation there will continue to be waste generated by inefficient processes - which makes no sense either financially or from a socially responsible point of view. As an example - why visit a site 200 miles away if you can get the data you need from your laptop? Why work on a project in siloes, duplicating conversations, calculations and analysis when it’s possible to have a data driven central shared view available all the time to all stakeholders?
9
It’s these kinds of simple innovations that can reduce drag on a complex build, helping to maintain morale as well as momentum. 38 percent of decision makers cited inefficiency as the infrastructure sector’s greatest challenge, with wastefulness coming second (23 percent), followed by digitisation (20 percent) and safety (19 percent). With local, national and global infrastructure projects planned or already in motion - there is an opportunity for companies and governments to make billions of pounds of taxpayers’ and private money do more and go further. Those savings could even be put towards the digital upskilling of older sections of the workforce so that they, like the industry itself can remain future proof. Demolition Harnessing the Internet of Things There is a thin
Unlocking the next generation of asset tracking in demolition and construction with the Internet of Things, by Derek Bryan, VP EMEA, Verizon Connect.
line between asset tracking and the Internet of Things (IoT). From simply keeping track of equipment in a spreadsheet to using RFID or GPS to log equipment usage and location electronically, most construction businesses will typically have some form of asset tracking system already in place. However, new developments in number-crunching power and advances in all-in-one software platforms, are helping construction businesses enhance their asset tracking capabilities by embracing IoT, arguably the next evolutionary step in the development of asset tracking.
IoT makes asset tracking data actionable by adding context. In other words, identifying not just where equipment is being used, but how it is being used and by whom. The industry has evolved to the point where any tool or asset can be inexpensively connected via IoT sensors and data relating to its usage and/or condition can be captured, interpreted and acted upon. With this information in hand, managers can make better informed decisions regarding whether it’s necessary to rent additional equipment or simply retrieve underutilised, owned equipment
10
from another job site and deploy it elsewhere. Here we look at some of the ways in which demolition and construction managers can get the most value from IoT. Proactive Maintenance Upgrading your asset tracking to the level of IoT means more than just developing an understanding of where your assets are. Sensors can be used to send status updates on a range of events, including temperature change, excessive vibration or door movement. This helps track mechanical wear and tear and schedule necessary maintenance (based on usage metrics, such as engine hours) or create alerts for parts when they need replacing. It’s easy to take your business’ assets for granted until they go missing or break down. Using a digital solution to track and regulate equipment maintenance can therefore help protect the lifeblood of businesses and prevent costly downtime. For powered equipment that requires preventative maintenance or routine fixes, a consolidated asset tracking solution can provide a holistic view of maintenance alerts, regardless of manufacturer. Moreover, paperless inspections can help automate the monitoring of equipment condition, which improves on-the-job safety, productivity and overall job efficiency. Utilisation Reports Are assets giving a good return on investment (ROI), or are they
Demolition sitting idle most of the day? Asset utilisation reports can help identify equipment with low ROI, providing managers with the numbers they need to identify equipment that can be sold off or repurposed somewhere else in the business, or to review how often and for how long a piece of equipment is used on a particular day or during certain periods of time. That data can be matched against the progress of work accomplished to identify discrepancies or inefficiencies. Monitoring asset information, such as time of use, idle time, employee usage and maintenance dates, also helps construction firms to reduce or eliminate unnecessary fuel and labour costs that can eat away at profit margins.
Data Consolidation The ability to proactively understand equipment to help reduce costs and downtime is a huge priority for businesses large and small. As companies evolve their asset tracking capabilities with IoT, the equipment they rely on will be able to share information autonomously. The resulting actionable data will not only help construction businesses become more efficient but will also aid the transition from traditional reactive operations and enable them to respond more quickly, become more productive and deliver a higher level of service to customers. However, construction companies own and operate thousands of
Negating Theft Given the cost of purchase and the risk of theft, it’s no surprise that a company that leases or owns construction equipment would want to keep a close eye on its assets. With an intelligent asset tracking solution in place, construction firms can receive notifications when a piece of equipment is operated during an unauthorised time period or even if a piece of equipment is being moved out of hours or outside an approved area. This feature is particularly critical for smaller construction firms that may lack extensive job site security resources or security technology. ‘Geofences’ allow construction managers to easily draw up virtual perimeters around the area in which equipment is authorised to be used. If assets leave that perimeter, they can be instantly notified either via SMS alerts or via their asset tracking software platform’s mobile application. These instant alerts allow managers or their security teams to notify law enforcement immediately, if required, potentially reducing damage and accelerating recovery.
11
powered and non-powered assets of various makes, models and manufacturers. These various systems are independent, meaning construction site or equipment managers must access several different sources to pull the asset data they need. Any investment in IoT, therefore, must be matched with investment in a single, complete asset-tracking software system. In so doing, construction firms can make sure all the data from their powered and non-powered assets is consolidated and centralised, regardless of make, model or manufacturer. With this holistic approach in mind, companies can gain an enhanced level of visibility of assets and deliver positive returns on their investment in IoT.
Demolition When Diesel’s Day is Done The writing is on the wall for the demolition industry’s traditional and primary fuel source; diesel. So how will the sector power its equipment in the future? Mark Anthony asked the experts.
So the day will eventually come when a day’s work on a demolition site begins not with a belch of black smoke and the roar of a diesel engine but with the faint whistle of a slew ring on an electricpowered excavator, or the faint hum of a hybrid machine.

It won’t happen this year, and it won’t happen next year. Chances are, I shall have hung up both my pen and my hard hat long before it becomes a reality. But there is a very real possibility that those reading this publication will see the day when diesel fuel no longer reigns supreme on the demolition site; when the traditional fuel of the industry finally makes way for one or more cleaner alternatives Diesel won’t go quietly, of
course. There is too much tradition; too many with a vested interest in diesel’s survival to simply bang a final nail in the fuel’s coffin. But international legislation is slowly but inexorably pushing diesel to the side-lines. More localised regulation is gradually eating away at the areas in which even super-clean diesel is permitted – Low-emission zones might currently be the sole preserve of the major cities but the environmental lobby is vocal, fashionable, and it has momentum. It is surely only a matter of time before rural areas bow to the low-emission movement as well.
12
Which alternative fuel source will hold sway? Right now, it is impossible to tell. Some manufacturers might have us all believe that the future is electric and have made some giant leaps in that direction. Whether that proves suitable for the very specific demands of the demolition sector remains to be seen. So, rather than taking a wild guess at what a diesel-free future might hold, we spoke to five of the world’s biggest and most innovative equipment manufacturers – Case, Caterpillar, JCB, Volvo and Wacker-Neuson – to gauge their views. Several of them currently produce diesel engines but are starting to offer viable alternatives; most believe that electric has a role to play, although what that role might be depends upon the manufacturer. And at least one is putting its faith in bio-fuels. Does any of them hold the definitive answer? Only time will tell. But as you read the pages of the extended feature that follows, it will quickly become clear that diesel’s day in the sun is drawing to a close. So enjoy that petroleum-laced whiff while you still can. Diesel’s day is almost done.

Time for biofuels to shine?
14
Demolition
Biofuels have been overshadowed by developments in electromobility, but will tightening emissions legislation thrust them back into the spotlight? Volvo CE’s engine experts think they will play an important part in lowering machine fossil CO2 emissions.
On August 29th, 2007 a carbon dioxidefree transportation seminar was held at the National Marine Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. At this event, the Volvo Group demonstrated seven trucks, each powered by a different biofuel solution. The conclusion of the event was that although the technical challenges of biofuels could be overcome, there needed to be some form of pan-industry, pan-national consensus on a preferred fuel, so that future investment could be focussed in the right direction. “Society still hasn’t agreed on a preferred biofuel in the dozen years since that event,” says Toni Hagelberg, Director of engine systems at Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE). “There is still a broad range of biofuels available, their availability is patchy, and performance is variable. Because of this it’s little surprise that the take-up by customers has been modest.”
Biofuels Overshadowed

F U E LS
Once seen as the best opportunity to lower CO2 emissions in construction equipment, biofuels have been overshadowed by developments in electric technology, as the industry begins its long transition towards a fossil free future. Biodiesel, synthetic diesel, dimethylether, methanol/ethanol, hydrogen and biogas can all be made to work technically in construction equipment – but none have really taken off. Without a clear consensus, interest has waned, and customers continue
to look to traditional diesel as the fuel of choice. That said, it’s generally accepted that fossil-derived diesel’s days are numbered – even in off highway machinery.
Demolition them is too high. Some biofuel’s specification can vary wildly, while others are temperature sensitive or need additives to stop bacteria forming that could clog the system.” That’s not to say that there haven’t been any developments. In Europe much diesel now comes blended with a small percentage of biodiesel (around seven percent), and in US states such as Minnesota, the local government insists that during selected months during the summer diesel be blended with 20% biofuels. (Not during winter, as a higher blend percentage could lead to clogging issues in the colder weather.) Manufacturers have also not stood still. Volvo CE’s range has long been able to work with biofuels, and its latest Stage V compliant engine range is certified to run normally on the biofuel Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
ALTERNATIVE
F U E LS
HVO is a renewable ‘green’ diesel and is as close as the industry has come to a biofuel to rally around. It has performance characteristics very similar to traditional diesel – but emits up to 90 percent less CO2, as well as lower NOx and particulates. As compared to regular biodiesel produced by esterification, the HVO process uses hydrogen rather than methanol as the catalyst. The main advantages of HVO are its high cetane number (combustion quality), high energy density and lack of oxygen content. Another key advantage of HVO is its ability to work effectively at temperatures as low as -50°C. This, in turn, makes HVO suitable for use during cold winters. Finally, HVO conforms to ISO standards, and is therefore constant, unlike other biodiesels. HVO is a high quality fuel and can be blended without limits. Therefore, it can be used as a like-forlike replacement for
16
Demolition traditional fossil-based diesel, which, theoretically, could be used as B100, but without any damage to the engines. Given these advantages over fossil diesel and regular biodiesel, HVO is gaining popularity on the European and global markets, with an increasing number of companies investing in the fuel.
Voice of the People
“While the current Stage V legislation will be with us for some time yet, there is growing pressure elsewhere in society to keep driving down the CO2 outputs of construction equipment. In addition, Ultra-low emissions zones will become more commonplace – even zero emission zones,” says Marcus Karlsson, who is responsible for legal and compliance within Volvo CE’s engine team. “Society’s desire to lower CO2 outputs is running faster than legislation, and it is clear that equipment manufacturers will have to increase the long-term downward trend in emissions of its combustion-engine machines radically.
17
ALTERNATIVE
F U E LS
Meeting this need for ever lower CO2 emissions presents the construction equipment industry with a challenge. While electric machines may provide the emission-free solution long term (and are already attractive for compact equipment), limitations in battery technology mean they don’t currently have the energy storage capacity to replace larger combustion engine machines. While diesel-electric hybrids are an attractive option, there are several other areas that can drive down carbon dioxide emissions. “When it comes to lowering CO2 we can’t ignore the impact of electric, and we are actively developing this technology,” says Toni Hagelberg. “This will take time and for the foreseeable future we will continue to develop the combustion engine.
Demolition This is in order to keep lowering the CO2 outputs of the engine themselves, while developments elsewhere will help optimize the entire machine – which cuts carbon dioxide further. An important – crucial even – element of this process will undoubtedly be the increasing use of biofuels. This is not just an issue for off highway manufacturers, on-highway automotive manufacturers are looking at options such as biogas and natural gas, and other actors in the market has invested billions on developing hydrogen fuel cell technology.”
Well-to-Wheel
This calculation is easier said than done; some biofuels can use different feedstocks and even complete crops, whereas others are limited to parts of individual crops. And where fuel feedstocks are derived from agricultural products there is the issue of the competing for food production. An equally contentious issue is the use of palm oil-based feedstocks derived from deforestation. For biofuels to be truly

The ability to cut carbon emissions radically is biofuel’s great advantage, but the actual percentage reduction varies greatly, depending on the feedstock used to create them. ‘Well to wheel’
calculations consider all the relevant stages of the fuel chain. This includes the cultivation and harvesting of the raw material, its transport to the fuel manufacturing plant, production and distribution of the fuel and then its use in vehicles. The quantity of fuel/energy used in harvesting, production etc. is then subtracted from the quantity of fuel produced.

‘clean’ it must come from sustainable sources that avoid these environmental pitfalls.
Chicken & Egg
The pressure is building for biofuels to once again come into the spotlight. They have the potential to significantly lower carbon emissions in construction equipment. But for this to happen, investment in biofuel production and distribution needs to be considerably increased. If availability and fuel quality were to increase, customer demand would likely increase accordingly. As Volvo CE’s Marcus Karlsson concludes: “If society and the fuel industry can get it right, biofuels will enable the use of combustion engines and yet slash CO2 outputs to almost nothing.

In today’s climate, where electricity production is still firmly linked to fossil fuels, it is difficult to reduce carbon emissions sufficiently. And, of course, you simply cannot match the power and the full day of autonomy delivered by a diesel engine with current electric solutions.
22
Bridging with Biomethane
In order to reach a zero-carbon future, we need more viable alternatives. To best deliver on our customers’ business needs alongside our sustainability commitment, the long-term road to electrification is a multi-powered one The immediate need is to develop diesel engines that are as clean and efficient as possible. We’ve led the way in this field with our selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and our Stage V engines, with optimised aftertreatment systems, which improve emissions while lowering fuel consumption. But the journey can’t stop here. This leadership position continues as CASE investigates the use of more productive and pragmatic fuels such as natural gas and biomethane. Our commitment to this technology led us to develop the world’s first methane-powered construction vehicle: ProjectTETRA. ProjectTETRA provides immediate access to a virtuous cycle of energy generation. In just 60 days, biomethane can be created on site in a biodigester using waste food,
Demolition wood chippings, crops or animal waste. This gives clear potential for agricultural, waste handling and recycling businesses which can create their own fuel from the waste products the wheel loaders handle. Biomethane-powered machines already provide many environmental benefits. While ProjectTETRA delivers the same power as the current diesel-fuelled CASE 821G wheel loader and a full working day of autonomy, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 95 percent, polluting emissions by 80 percent and drive-by noise by 50 percent. ProjectTETRA shows that access to alternative propulsion that meets the power that we have come to expect from diesel is possible now, albeit not in a commercially available option – yet. Although biomethane would be the preferred fuel, network available methane is fully compatible with a
biomethane engine. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is already widely available in many regions, such as France, Germany, Italy and much of Scandinavia. Eventual commercialisation of a CNGpowered wheel loader will be driven by market acceptance and demand, but the advanced state of the natural gas infrastructure confirms that this is a viable option. ProjectTETRA was born from a desire to produce a sustainable and practical alternative to the traditional diesel engine. But it’s not just about sustainable fuel. ProjectTETRA is centred around combining environmentally conscious clean energy with stateof-the-art machine technologies to create the ultimate in machine productivity, style and comfort.
Borrowing Technology
As a group, we already have methane-powered vehicles in operation in many applications. FPT Industrial, through its expertise in gas powertrain design, has
produced over 40,000 gas engines. And the IVECO brand has proven the viability of this technology with 28,000 vehicles already benefitting from natural-gas-powered FPT engines. Our decisions about the alternative fuel of the future are based firmly on our experience, our innovative spirit and our determination to provide pragmatic solutions for the real world. For heavy-duty applications, zerocarbon with diesel performance is our goal, and we’ll use multiple power sources, including biomethane, to get us there. Electrification is, and will continue to be, a part of that journey and we’ll launch electric vehicles where the application demands or requires it. We have the experience and the technology to adapt to the multipowered and varying demands that our customers face, and we will continue to deliver solutions that meet their needs and that of our precious planet.

Constructing the Road to Zero

JCB’s Chief Innovation and Growth Officer, Tim Burnhope explores the introduction of innovative electric technology into JCB’s range of construction equipment while reinforcing the fundamental role diesel power has to play in JCB’s future, in reducing harmful emissions and in building Britain’s infrastructure.
24
In the last year, JCB has unveiled three new models that have marked a new dawn in the proud history of construction equipment innovation. New products have included the 19C-1E – JCB’s first fully electric mini excavator; the 30-19E – JCB’s first fully electric Teletruk; the new range of Electric scissor lifts powered by lithium-ion batteries
Demolition Their introduction signals the launch of the JCB E-TEC range – a new generation of fully electric machines with zero emissions at point of use and no compromise on performance. Leading the way in alternative fuel technologies, JCB will continue to enhance and develop its exciting electric power train but there is a common misconception that electric is the only answer to a clean-power future. While huge investment, research and development and manufacturing expertise has gone into the development of these specialist products, electrification remains a niche market for applications in sensitive urban environments and enclosed spaces,
where zero emissions and reduced noise levels are a necessity.
Increasing Urbanisation
In the next thirty years the global population is expected to grow from seven billion to 10 billion. The number of city dwellers will increase from 54 per cent to 70 per cent of the population. This means we need to continue to improve air quality, to continue to invest in improved technologies and to continue on the road towards zero harmful emissions. Electric equipment undoubtedly has a role to play. With urbanisation, machines are operating more closely to people as well as digging underground, indoors, near hospitals and in food production
environments. As a result, there is a new zero emissions sector emerging. It is for this reason we have put ourselves at the forefront of alternative power technologies and developed our first ever electric machines. However, with this increasing urbanisation comes an increased demand for more houses, more public amenities, more schools, more roads and railways. So ultimately, a massive need for more heavy-duty construction.
The Case for Diesel
For large scale excavators, electric power is quite simply too costly both financially and environmentally. It would cost £160,000 for a lithium-ion battery large enough to power a 20-tonne excavator for an eight-hour shift - not to mention the vast amount of carbon-dioxide produced in the battery’s manufacturing process. Diesel, on the other hand, contains more energy than petrol, natural gas, a variety of battery types and many other fuels or power sources. In fact, by mass, diesel contains around 54 times more energy than current lithium-ion batteries.
25
ALTERNATIVE
F U E LS
Diesel is safe to can be delivered to site easily - even in remote locations. Finally, with their high torque nature and robustness, diesel engines are perfectly suited to heavy duty applications, including use in construction equipment. Given these benefits it is a major concern that the basic power systems the majority of our industry’s machines use - diesel engines - are in danger of being caught in the collateral damage caused largely by the automotive sector diesel scandals
Demolition Committed to Clean
JCB has long been, and will remain, committed to leading our sector in helping to make construction equipment cleaner and healthier. Cutting exposure to air pollutants and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is something we take very seriously and, just as innovation has been at the heart of our first fully electric models, it has also been integral to our ground-breaking clean diesel engine development too. We know that creating cleaner machines starts with creating cleaner engines. We have designed and built our engines at our plant in Derbyshire since 2004. Our investment has helped to make our existing engines dramatically better. So much so that in an urban environment where there is already a degree of pollution, the air that comes out of the engine can often be cleaner than the air that goes in. In fact, our vehicles and machines emit less than buses and haulage vehicles. By way of evidence that JCB’s clean diesel engines work for construction and the environment, we only need to look to our capital city. London has major air pollution issues, but if all the vehicles on its roads used JCB’s clean diesel technology there would be almost no air quality issues from road transport.

A Clear Difference As stricter legislation drives innovation, that innovation drives technological revolution and provides a genuine opportunity to differentiate from competitors. Our measures for Tier 4 compliance were the perfect example of this. At that stage, while
other engine manufacturers chose to meet challenges by incorporating diesel particulate filters, JCB did not. JCB’s novel combustion process meant that pollutants were dealt with in the combustion chamber, rather than finding their way into the exhaust gases, to be dealt with later. And as emissions legislation has, quite rightly, continued to tighten, we’ve proven our industry-leading capabilities yet again. For Stage V, the next phase of emissions legislation, JCB is using
26
Particulate Control Technology to meet requirements but has once again sought an alternative to bolting on a DPF. The next generation particulate technology is more than just a particulate filter. It combines a low emissions combustion system with catalysts and filters, all managed by a sophisticated engine and after-treatment control system. This ensures the exhaust emissions are minimised over a wide range of operating conditions. It’s completely integrated, highly reliable, highly effective and invisible to the customer.
Demolition This latest generation of engines have almost eradicated harmful emissions. NOx is down 97 percent and soot particulates are down by 98 percent. Beyond that, JCB’s clean diesel technology has helped deliver a 43 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from JCB machines by improving fuel efficiency, saving 2.5 billion litres of diesel.
E-TEC range from JCB could be the perfect solution. In addition to developments on the engines themselves, JCB’s team can remotely monitor engine performance using our ‘LiveLink’ telematics system to ensure that vehicles are performing in the most efficient way possible. For example,
How JCB Sees the Future
JCB is a proud part of Britain’s manufacturing sector and significant contributor to the UK economy. Our machines play an important role in supporting vital industries and social priorities, particularly housebuilding, infrastructure and agriculture. Whether they are helping to meet the target of 300,000 new homes every year, building new transport links like HS2 and the smart motorway network, or keeping Britain’s farms working efficiently and safely, JCB machines are part of the fabric of Britain. We have spent considerable time and effort to dramatically improve the environmental performance of our machines, to the point where they can play an important role in improving air quality.

JCB hopes to see government policies that enable the UK to meet priorities for clean air, while also meeting targets for building the housing and infrastructure on which the population depends. We see a balanced future, where the optimum machine should be selected for each application. Right now, that is a future where clean diesel machines deliver on the majority of projects. But in sensitive environments - demanding quiet operation or zero emissions at point of use - the innovative new

The Future is Now Wacker Neuson was one of the first movers in the journey towards reduced environmental impact having launched a specific zero emissions equipment range back in 2015. But the company shows no signs of slowing in its fight against pollution. Fine dust pollution in cities is a significant current issue, more and more municipalities discuss setting limit values. Thus, the legal requirements for exhaust emissions in the construction machinery sector have been continuously tightened, and the question of alternative drive systems for various vehicle classes is becoming increasingly important.
The wide range of electrically driven machines offered by Wacker Neuson operates without exhaust emissions and with very low noise emissions, which allows them to be used in inner-city areas, inside buildings and on sensitive sites, for example near kindergartens, schools or hospitals. Wacker Neuson identified the market demand for zero emission construction machinery and equipment at an early stage and therefore deployed and developed the appropriate resources in response; as the first in the industry, the manufacturer launched the zero emission product line in 2015. Because of this early move towards emission-free machinery, Wacker Neuson has a great deal of experience and know-how in this area. Recently, further manufacturers have been starting to offer first electrically-powered solutions. This is a positive development, as it helps develop the respective infrastructure and broadens the acceptance of such equipment with construction companies.

Furthermore, Wacker Neuson offers some zero emission compact machines: the wheel loader WL20e, the track dumper DT10e and the wheel dumper DW15e. The excavator 803 dual power can also work emission-free: In addition to the integrated diesel engine, the electro-hydraulic unit HPU8 can be connected to the 803 excavator if necessary. In this way, the excavator can be operated electrically. The market launch of the 1.7-ton electric mini-excavator EZ17e is currently in preparation. With this broad product portfolio of electrical construction machinery and equipment, an entire innercity construction site can now be operated completely free of emissions. There are already certain examples for construction sites where customers have only been able to meet special requirements thanks to the zero emission solutions from Wacker Neuson, e.g. the refurbishment of a hospital in Italy, the renovation of the Olympic indoor swimming pool in Munich during ongoing operations, or the demolition work in the cellar vault of a fortress, as well as a number of tunnelling applications. In the future, special requirements with regard to emissions and noise reduction will gain in importance and become more and more frequent.

operating costs are significantly lower; improved machine availability takes into combination the positive aspects of maintenance-free operation. In addition, the handling of electric products is simple: the battery-powered rammers and plates are started simply with the push of a button. Ease of use extends to charging, as well: all zero emission solutions from Wacker Neuson can be charged at a household power outlet

With regard to battery life, Wacker Neuson benefits from the rapid development cycles of
semiconductor and lithium-ion manufacturers. The lithium-ion battery employed for these seven products is designed so that technological improvements can be implemented quickly. The BP1400 battery presented at Bauma 2019 is the third generation of this battery platform.

designed and developed for tough use on construction sites. All of the following machines use the same battery from a modular system: the internal vibrator IEe, the vibratory plates AP2560e, AP1840e and AP1850e, and the battery-powered rammers AS30e, AS50e and AS60e: The smallest rammer model AS30e is a special vibratory rammer for compacting pipe spandrels or branching points, whilst the larger vibratory rammer AS50e, as well as the new model AS60e are employed for all traditional vibratory rammer applications. The compaction performance matches that of the respective gasolinepowered vibratory rammers of the same class. Regarding the battery-powered vibratory plates, Wacker Neuson extended the zero emission range in the year 2018 by the single direction models AP1840e and AP1850e. In 2019, the model AP2560e followed. With an operating width of 600 mm, it is the specialist for vibrating interlocking paving stones, but can also be used for classic compaction work on granular soils. In addition, it also facilitates work indoors and in other emission-sensitive areas, such as in trenches, sheeting and bracings. The battery-powered vibratory plate is also suitable for application in water protection areas, since no combustion engines may be used there. The seventh product that can be operated with this battery, is the internal vibrator system for concrete compaction. The system makes it possible to work without a power cable, which means new freedom of movement for the end user and a high level of operating comfort during concrete consolidation. The powerful lithium-ion battery is inserted in a converter backpack (ACBe). The operator thus carries the power source directly when working, eliminating the need for long power cables.
Demolition (no high-voltage current required). Fully charged, all zero emission products have enough power to last the duration of an average working day – a requirement that Wacker Neuson sets itself to launch a zero emission solution. Besides the completely emissionfree working, Wacker Neuson has opted for the electric motor as an alternative to combustion engines because their efficiency is significantly higher in comparison. Moreover, the noise emissions are up to five times lower than with conventional construction machinery and equipment, which is another major benefit for the operator, especially in noisesensitive environments.
Looking to the Future
While Wacker Neuson is working on larger zero emission products, these new additions will not exceed the class of machinery currently produced. In general, a technically feasible solution may not always be the most appropriate approach for the customer; however, customer benefit is always at the forefront of all developments at Wacker Neuson. The battery will continue to assert itself in the construction equipment sector. In the smaller power range, purely electrically operated construction machines are an attractive alternative to conventional products. However, a much more differentiated picture will emerge in the future across the entire range of construction machinery: a wide variety of alternative drive systems, hybrid drives, synthetic fuels and similar innovations will re-shape the
ALTERNATIVE

In the future, Wacker Neuson will invest in the expansion of its zero emission line; the goal is to offer at least one zero emission product in all core product groups in the medium term. For example, at Bauma 2019, the Zero Tail

Wacker Neuson is constantly testing alternative drive technologies and cooperates with universities and start-up companies in this area to bring innovative developments closer. of five key pillars in our technology strategy. Electrified equipment, in the right application, can benefit customers in each of our major industry segments through fuel savings, increased environmental sustainability, greater durability and higher productivity. Since the customer value proposition is quite diverse, so is our range of solutions. For some customers, generating zero emissions is the goal; for others, it’s burning less fuel or increasing power density. Customers won’t sacrifice quality, reliability or durability to achieve these objectives. That’s why our electrification strategy begins and ends with customer needs — and why we’re pursuing not a single solution, but a versatile approach that lets us match the right product to the application. That includes: • Fully electric products Featuring single or multiple non-engine electric power sources, these products are best suited for environments where eliminating emissions is key — underground, indoors, urban areas and some agricultural segments. Many of our electric rope shovels, draglines and oil and gas compression products have long been fully electric. In 2017, we created a proof-ofconcept R1300 underground loader with a battery-electric powertrain, which is now driving the development of our next generation battery-powered R1700 Mining Loader. •
electric power, these products are ideal for operations where using less fuel is a priority. Our D7E dozer, which first went to work in 2009, features a diesel-electric powertrain that delivers up to 30% better fuel efficiency — saving customers millions of litres of fuel over the last decade. Other examples of diesel-electric products in our portfolio include the 794 AC and 795F AC electric drive trucks and Electro-Motive locomotives. •
Hybrid products - Working alongside an engine, numerous other power sources — batteries, tethered or cablepowered electric systems, hydraulic accumulators, high-speed flywheels — can reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Our marine hybrid propulsion system delivers full diesel-mechanical power in work mode, then switches to more efficient diesel-electric operation for less-demanding applications. Our hybrid energy solutions provide renewable electric power to stationary locations in remote areas via a combination of generator sets, solar and energy storage building blocks.

Developing the right electrified products for our customers’ diverse needs isn’t something we’re doing alone. Our dealers around the world are on the front lines of the electrification movement — adapting existing Cat products to specific regional or jobsite requirements. German Cat dealer Zeppelin, for example, has been working with Caterpillar to develop a tethered, electrified material handler primarily for use indoors. Zeppelin has also adapted a Cat 302.7D CR mini excavator into a dual-power machine that can switch between a standard diesel engine or a cablepowered electric motor. And Pon Equipment is building eight fully electric excavators, based on our 323F model, for the Norwegian market that will run on electric motors, controllers and heavy-duty batteries. Though every industry we serve is unique, our customers share many goals — among them working more productively, efficiently and cost-effectively. To help them adapt to electrification more quickly, at a lower cost and with less risk, we’ll be applying tried-and-true concepts across industries, applications and products large and small. At the same time, we’ll also continue to seek the breakthrough innovations Caterpillar is known for, putting both bright minds and research and development dollars to work to make sure our customers have the tools to succeed in a partially or fully electric future.
