A Time of Change Loyal readers. We stand on the precipice of a step-change and at the cusp of a paradigm shift not seen since the last UK demolition man shouted “fetch me a wrecking ball, and don’t spare the horses.” As a print journalist who learned to type on a manual typewriter – there is still one by my desk as a constant reminder of the repetitive strain injury – the changes taking place in the publishing world are as uncomfortable to me as the switch from crawler crane to high reach excavator ever were to a veteran demolition man. But, as former Prime Minister Harold Wilson famously once said: “He who rejects change is the architect of decay”. With those wise words ringing in our ears, we were the first to embrace the use of video to help tell demolition’s story. We were the first to report the industry’s news unfiltered and without association bias. We were the first to create a dedicated job board to help demolition men find work and to help demolition companies find workers. And we were the first to create an app to allow this magazine to be read on tablets, smart phones and mobile devices. Despite all these innovations, we need to keep moving forward to keep pace with technological change and with shifts in how people (and not just young people) consume information. And so, we have taken another giant leap with an ambitious and (perhaps overly) optimistic decision to have our own online TV show that is purely ABOUT demolition and purely FOR demolition professionals. That show launched on 17 June 2016 and a second, third and fourth show are already in production.
“…Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future…” John F. Kennedy The show has no agenda and no timetable; it will ebb and flow with the industry news. Furthermore, it has no opinion - 99.9 percent of the words within each episode will come from the industry itself. And while we may not always agree with what our contributors have to say, we are more than happy to provide them with a platform from which to say it. Of course, DemolitionNews.com will continue. This magazine will continue. And Demolition-Jobs.co.uk will continue too. But, like it or not, we are all now living in the YouTube age where information is watched, not read; where information is consumed and shared on the move, not by post or in stuffy meetings. This promises to be an exciting yet bumpy journey; a steep learning curve for us and you; and there will almost certainly be a few spills along the way. But please stick with us – We have a pretty good idea of where we’re headed and, even if the final destination is not entirely clear, the journey should be an interesting one. Welcome to D At long last, there is finally a TV show about the demolition industry and for the demolition industry. Mark Anthony reports on the launch of this ambitious new project. The Didcot Power Station disaster notwithstanding, it seems that DemolitionNews and Demolition magazine are on a hit list for TV production companies seeking to make a show or series about demolition. Unfortunately, those calls – which arrive at a rate of at least six per month – all follow the same welltrodden path: “We are looking to produce a TV show on demolition. Our crew is available next Tuesday. What can we blow up?” Sadly, even those shows that initially promise to portray the true art and

“Mass media TV shows on demolition just appeal to the lowest common denominator so they play up the risks and ignore the skill and expertise that goes into a professional demolition job. I am sick and tired of watching shows that suggest that all demolition is explosive, that an explosives engineer drives into town an hour or two before a blast and leaves again before the dust has settled,” DemolitionNews founder Mark Anthony says. evolves. And if we decide to do a oneoff show – dedicated to an exhibition or conference, perhaps – then we can do that too.”
The launch of Demolition TV which will be on YouTube and available via DemolitionNews and the DemolitionNews Facebook page – is the latest stage in the development of a media operation that is dedicated to the demolition sector. “We launched DemolitionNews to provide the industry
DemolitionNews. So we have joined forces with them even more closely to produce a regular show that is purely for demolition professionals.”
Flexible Approach Anthony says that the editorial content of Demolition TV will be flexible to match the ever-changing demolition landscape. “We will try to include interviews with key industry figures in most episodes, together with details of new equipment and technology,” he says. “We are also keen to highlight key industry concerns such as training, safety and the environment but this will ebb and flow as the show

Anthony continues. “The launch of Demolition TV is a natural progression and will share many of the same independent and unbiased principles that have helped make DemolitionNews the global leader in its field.”
Despite the recent purchase of a new 4K cinemaquality drone and some other advanced camera equipment, Anthony says that the intention is to start small while the content (and the technology behind it) is being perfected. But he is ambitious nonetheless. “I believe that the industry is dynamic and sufficiently fast-moving to support a show every two or three weeks but that may increase or decrease according to demand,” Mark Anthony concludes. “But if the audience is with us and the show gains traction, I would love to see it moving to a weekly broadcast. And while it will initially be a purely UK operation, I would like nothing more than to produce a couple of editions from the US each year.” You can view the launch edition of Demolition TV here: http://tinyurl.com/zxkmgz5

A Passion for Demolition Erith Contractors Ltd has joined forces with charitable initiative, Passion Project, to deliver a new standard in demolition apprenticeships and address the industry’s growing skills shortage.
Erith Contractors Ltd has successfully seen the first intake of apprentices through their initial training and job placement as part of the Passion Project.
This new initiative is designed in collaboration with young people, and helps individuals identify a career that matches their interests.

A New Approach
By using passion as the motivation for learning and development, the Passion Project inspires individuals to more clearly identify who they want to be in life as opposed to what they want to do.
Erith’s operations director Stuart Accleton, who has been instrumental in the development of the programme, says that the scheme has been a truly collaborative effort. “Erith was a founding partner in the Passion Project. We are committed to attracting young people to our business and are constantly seeking fresh talent to keep pace with our ongoing expansion and to fuel future growth,” he says. “But we could not have got this far without the support and assistance of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and the Institute of Demolition Engineers which committed its education budget to the project.
The first intake of nine apprentices are all now at work on Erith Contractors Ltd sites across London and the South East and several have already achieved additional training standards as part of their pursuit of a career in demolition. This is the culmination of a far-reaching and collaborative project that has involved Erith Contractors Ltd - a founding partner in the Passion Project - and both the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE) and the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC).
“…I’m not used to getting up early and travelling during rush hour but this is an opportunity I will make that sacrifice for…” Helal Miah, Passion Project participant
“…When I attended the open day, I quickly realised that this was the perfect opportunity to build a career and start my life over again… ” J’maine Steadford, Passion Project participant
The initial intake comprised two groups of 15 candidates that had been pre-approved by the Passion Project.

according to Accleton. “In addition to providing the necessary training, we were offering each of the lads three months’ paid work if they passed that training together with a two-year apprenticeship if they prove themselves suitable,” he adds. “We have proved that demolition can do it different and do it better.”
Accleton says that the Passion Project approach differs greatly from the usual method of providing training for these young people. “Anyone claiming unemployment benefit is encouraged to take training in a skill or vocation. And many of our candidates had already been through construction and painting and decorating courses but had failed to find work when the training finished,” he says. This is a view echoed by each of the candidates. “I studied plastering in college and received distinction after distinction,” says Passion Project participant Richard Samuel. “But when the course ended, I didn’t know what path to take and I wasn’t having any luck finding work.”

place the successful candidates on sites across London. As it transpired, this was not necessary. “Erith Contractors Ltd had won some large-scale contracts in London, some of which stipulated the need to employ local people and apprentices,” Accleton says. “So although some of the other NFDC members had already expressed an interest in taking on some of these lads, they all ended up going to work on Erith projects.”
“…I have been given a great opportunity to turn my life around in this industry and I will definitely make the most of it…” Rashanne Miller, Passion Project participant Accleton says that the next intake – and he is aiming for three or four courses per year – will be made available to the wider demolition industry. Power of Pre-Qualification Accleton believes that a key to the success of the scheme is the early intervention of the Passion Project which works actively with Jobcentre Plus and the Probation Service to find suitable candidates. “By the time our candidates reached us, they had already been through several interviews with the Passion Project and had proved that they had the right characteristics and

stuff If Erith is grateful to the Passion Project, then that feeling is more than reciprocated. “From the moment Erith Contractors Ltd became involved, they have demonstrated a real commitment to helping these young people and to offering them a genuine path forward,” says Liz Obertelli, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development for the Passion Project. “The backing from the IDE and the NFDC has been vital in bringing this to fruition.”
“I have personally seen and benefitted from the career progression that is possible within the demolition industry,” Stuart Accleton concludes. “There is no good reason why some of these lads can’t be site supervisors within a few years. Within five years, they could be contracts managers. It is early days but I am quietly confident that six or seven of the first intake of lads could go all the way.” An exclusive video interview with one of the Passion Project participants – J’maine Steadford – will appear in the second episode of Demolition TV: http://tinyurl.com/zqawvb3

Not Short on Skill Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony visited Shorts Group in Bracknell, Berkshire and found a company on the rise.
Anyone that has ever met Gary Short will understand the irony of the Short Group MD’s surname. Gary Short is pretty much a giant, a towering presence with the ability to dominate a room. But in the finest tradition, he is a gentle giant. There is none of the usual shouting, swearing, table-thumping that is still common in some demolition company boardrooms. Instead there is a studied and considered calm; a calm that has already led the company to an impressive degree of expansion and which is targeting yet more to come.

That Shorts Group has carved itself a slice of such a competitive pie against such established and resected opposition says much for Gary Short’s determination and the quality of the operation he has created. It also says much for the company’s resilience. “When I took over the company from my father in 1995, we had two skip lorries, were doing a couple of small-scale demolition jobs each month and we were sharing staff between our demolition, plant hire and waste divisions.
Incestuous Rivalry The Shorts Group headquarters is located in one of the UK’s most competitive regions of demolition outside of London. Comley Group is just up the road, as are J. Mould (Reading) and R. Collard Ltd. The fact that recently-appointed demolition manager Colin Prendergast enjoyed a spell with both of the latter companies speaks to the incestuous rivalries that exist locally.

Any new rules that make us better or safer is surely a good thing,” Short insists. “We actively embrace new legislation because it levels the playing field and removes the cowboy element from the industry.”
At the time, the group was turning over £1 million,” Short explains. “In 2008, when the recession hit, waste fell off the chart. I have never seen so many skips in our yard. But we worked together and avoided making the staff cuts that others were forced to make. As a result, we were among the first to re-emerge when business picked up. Today, the group turnover is £20 million and we’re targeting further increases in the years to come.”
Embracing Legislation If Short’s anti-recession measures mark him as unique, then his attitude towards ever-more stringent legislation merely compounds that individuality. “We work in an inherently dangerous business and we operate in a litigious society that loves to make a claim.
Short insists that a key part of the demolition contractor’s job today is managing expectations from clients and local residents. “Demolition companies are generally the first on a site that might run for another 24 or 36 months so it is vital that we make a good first impression,” he asserts. “People no longer pick up the phone to complain about excessive noise, dust or mud on the road; they take to social media and word spreads faster and wider than ever before. It is my name on the side of the lorries, wheelie bins and excavators and so I am directly accountable. Is it fair? No. But that is the world we live in today.”
Value over Price Accountability and customer service are clearly the cornerstone of the Shorts Group operation and is evident across all the company’s multi-faceted operations. “Whether we’re picking up a wheelie bin for £12, hiring out a power tool for £20 or tackling a half a million pound demolition contract, it is vital that we do a good job and offer a good service,” Colin Prendergast explains.
26
on site “The key to repeat business is not cheap prices but customer value. And the two things are not the same.” That philosophy is equally evident in the company’s equipment procurement practices. The company’s plant hire division comprises more than 160 excavators of up to 8 tonnes. While other plant hirers still insist on operating low quality, almost disposable equipment and running it into the ground to turn a profit,

Both machines have been supplied with twin lock quick hitches, full guarding around the
Shorts Group has a fleet that is built around premier league brands like Takeuchi, Kubota and – primarily – Volvo. That love of Volvo equipment – which, according to Gary Short is based as much upon aftersales back-up as it is on the machines themselves – carries through to the company’s demolition operations.
Faith in Volvo Indeed, the company has recently taken delivery of a reduced swing radius 25 tonne ECR235E and its larger brother the 30 tonne EC300E equipped specifically for secondary demolition duties. “The larger Volvo demolition excavators have a good track record and reputation within the industry,” Prendergast explains. “As we were looking to replace one machine and add an additional unit to the fleet we decided to opt for these two models.”

Looks Familiar Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony is struck with a distinct feeling of déjà vu during a visit to Downwell Demolition’s new headquarters.
So when I punched the postcode of Downwell Demolition’s new headquarters into my sat-nav system, the address – like Vienna to Midge Ure – meant nothing to me. It was only when I took the third exit at the roundabout, swung past Messiah Corporation’s used equipment and high reach hire operation towards Bobcat London that I got the sense that I had been here before. Downwell’s new and newly-refurbished offices, yard and workshop are, in fact, the former home of Miller
One of the unseen side effects of the onset of the technological age is the fact that our brains have surrendered responsibility for the storage and management of what used to be valuable information. Telephone numbers, birthdays and anniversaries that were once etched onto my brain are now committed to the memory of my iPhone, allowing me to concentrate on more pressing matters…like remembering where I last saw my car keys.

Groundbreaking’s Southern depot, the opening of which I reported on just 18 months ago. But while the location is familiar, the look and feel of the place has changed beyond all recognition. The workshop that was once a stopping-off point for Miller’s new range of hydraulic hammers now houses a vast array of Downwell attachments in various stages of repair and refurbishment.

The yard is home to a collection of buckets together with an impressive array of excavators and a high reach boom that is just days away from its next deployment. And on the side of the building there’s a bloomin’ great Downwell sign which, while probably not visible from space, is clearly visible from Dartford’s Queen Elizabeth Bridge that casts a shadow over the new HQ and which helps provide Downwell with rapid access into London and beyond. All the reasons that the Grays facility made it suitable for Miller still apply.
While his summation of the relocation is modest and understated, there is no question that the move – which coincides with the appointment of former Micor managing director Michael Corridan as a director – is a statement of intent. The company is still not quite 15 years old, but it is maturing rapidly, taking on ever more complex and challenging works and gaining an enviable reputation along the way. Downwell is currently tackling the top down demolition of the 22-storey Sutton Point tower block in Sutton, Surrey (you can see a DemoVision video of the block here: https://youtu.be/hNC8AVOT-y0) and is nearing completion of the painstaking demolition of Allen Court in Ealing, a system-build tower block that shared many design characteristics with the infamous Ronan Point. “Could we have tackled this type of work five or eight years ago? Maybe, but only maybe” Phillips says. “But we have so much more experience and expertise now. There is nothing that we cannot tackle today.”
Statement of Intent Casually-dressed, tanned and irksomely fit-looking, Downwell managing director Matt Phillips sits behind a functional and modern desk, a computer monitor blinking idly as he explains the reason for the relocation. “This yard became available and it ticked every box for us. It’s just a few moments from the A13 into the centre of London and provides the yard, workshop and office space that we needed,” he says. “The workshop also includes a pair of overhead cranes that will allow us to move and store our attachments more efficiently. It was a case of right place, right building and right time.”

on site Chasing Heels Downwell has unquestionably come a long way, although Phillips remains markedly modest in his appraisal of the company that he has created. “There are some very good companies around, particularly in this part of the country. And I know that we are chasing their heels,” he says. “But we work with our clients and go that extra mile for them. And those clients now recognise that we are a professional very competent demolition contractor.” The company’s growth is not without its challenges, of course. There is the need for almost constant training – governed by an internallymonitored training matrix – and ever-shifting health and safety standards. But he remains a believer in demolition as a vocation, and even has his son working for the company as an apprentice. “Demolition offers real career progression. Some people are happy to become a labourer and remain a labourer, and that’s fine. But demolition is a skill; burning is a skill; operating a machine is a skill; working on top of a tower block is a skill,” he says. “If you take demolition seriously, if you train and improve, you are a tradesman.” While Phillips son might be focused on a future in demolition, Matt Phillips is looking to the future of Downwell Demolition. “I want to try to grow the firm and make sure that everyone gets a good living and that I get a good living from it,” Matt Phillips concludes. “But, most importantly, I want to ensure that all of our staff go home safely at the end of each working shift.” Our interview with Matt Phillips forms part of the launch edition of our Demolition TV show. Raising the Bar AR Demolition has made a major investment to ensure a constant flow of home-grown talent to fuel the company’s ongoing growth. Mark Anthony attended the company’s recent Apprenticeship Day to find out more.
People break down, roughly, into two types: there are those that do; and those that just talk about it. So when the demolition industry emerged from its recessionary slumbers and workloads increased, there were those that were content merely to
bemoan the resulting skills shortage and point accusatory fingers at the industries’ training regime; and then there were people like Richard Dolman and Andrew Thompson at AR Demolition.

help safeguard the company’s workforce in the years to come, and which raises the industry bar for training dedication and commitment.
Dedicated Fleet Dolman reports that his company was struggling to find equipment operators to suit the company’s very specific requirements. “Finding operators is not too hard but a lot of them come with baggage and bad operating habits. So we looked back at what we have done before,” Dolman says. “We have taken a number of ‘blank sheet of paper’ operators in the past, stuck them on a machine and taught them how we want them to operate. They have gone on to become some of the best operators in the company.”
First off, AR Demolition has bought a pair of brand new Caterpillar 320 excavators. Each machine is equipped with a Caterpillar quick hitch and accompanied by a full array of demolition attachments. Anyone that has followed the inexorable growth of AR Demolition in recent years will recognise that the purchase of Caterpillar equipment marks a major departure for a company that has prided itself on taking already good Volvo machines and then giving them the “AR spin”. “We chose Caterpillar for two very good reasons,”
From that starting point, AR Demolition has set in

If we had fitted the machines with OilQuick, there would have been a constant temptation for the demolition crew to ‘borrow’ a shear or a hammer. By using the Caterpillar hitch, that is not an option. These machines, and their attachments, are strictly for training purposes only.”
Turned on its Head And the investment does not end there. The company has purchased its own excavator simulator – the same as the unit used by the National Demolition Training Group of which Dolman is a former chairman – and each apprentice has been given a new van equipped with a full set of tools.
“The traditional approach is to put a trainee on a beaten up old machine but we wanted to turn that on its head,” Dolman continues. “We have given them a new machine and a new van and we expect the apprentices to keep them looking that way. If they don’t, then our apprenticeship is clearly not for them.” Dolman reports that the initial intake of apprentices will gain experience on all aspects of the AR Demolition business. “They will do four weeks on a machine, and four weeks off,” he explains. “When they are not on the machines, they will be working in our recycling yard, and accompanying our haulage team to give them a full 360 degrees of experience.”

by a large number of college students who were each given an opportunity to use the simulator and interact with the AR Demolition team. It is early days for the new AR Demolition scheme, and Richard Dolman is under no illusions. “I am not shy about it. Paradise Found Main contractor Carillion is so delighted with the performance of DSM Demolition on the prestigious Paradise project in the centre of Birmingham that it invited Demolition editor Mark Anthony to the site to tell him all about it.
But the company is notoriously modest and publicity shy, quite possibly because they do not need uneducated hacks tramping through their sites. As a result, I am generally forced to report upon and admire them from a safe distance, just outside the exclusion zone.
DSM Demolition can be a frustrating beast. It is one of the biggest, most-profitable and mostrevered demolition companies in the whole of the UK. It carries out some of the most high-profile and challenging work in the demolition sphere.
50
But even these experts in hiding lights beneath bushels could not avoid the media and public glare during the demolition of the former Central Library in the centre of the company’s native Birmingham. Carried out predominantly by a pair of massive high reach excavators – one owned, the other borrowed from Dem-Master but badged as a DSM machine – the contract has become something of a tourist attraction. Indeed, such is the local interest in the project that hoardings around the site have been equipped with viewing windows, while several areas have become a home-from-home for photographers and YouTube wannabes.
Even more surprisingly still – and this is a notable first in my journalistic career – the main contractor Carillion is so enamoured with DSM’s management of and conduct on this challenging project that it issued an invitation to the site so I could see DSM’s handiwork first-hand.
Major Challenge Make no bones about it; this project has potential PR disaster written all over it. It is located in an area of the UK’s second city that is frequented by more than a million pedestrians per month. It is surrounded by a live hotel on one side, and

And yet here is a main contractor actually waving a flag for the work of its demolition subcontractor. The reason for such positivity and transparency is plain to see both on the site and around it. Traffic is managed meticulously – I should know; I encountered fewer delays driving into the site than I do driving to my local Tesco Express. Roads and pedestrian walkways are clean and well protected; information on the project’s challenges and ambitions is plastered around the site; and while the exclusion zone is strictly enforced, local people are treated like the interested parties they are rather than the intrusive, accident-prone, complaint-hungry enemy they are often perceived to be.

It sits immediately beside Birmingham Museum and Birmingham Conservatoire. It is overlooked directly by Birmingham Town Hall. Excessive noise, dust and vibration or delays to pedestrian and road traffic are simply not an option.

on site Maintaining Communication But, according to Carillion’s Steve Fisher, many of DSM Demolition’s key achievements are unseen. “This project has many critical stakeholders, all of which have their own set of criterion and concern and demolition of this scale on their doorstep has definitely been an issue,” he says. “Coming up with a demolition methodology that suits all parties has been very challenging. But DSM have worked extremely sensitively and this has been achieved successfully.” According to Fisher, a key to this has been regular and thorough communication between Carillion,

the likely impact of high winds and shifts in wind direction – has been invaluable, his wish-list from the demolition contractor is actually far more straightforward. “We are looking for them to stick to the plan. It is important on a project like this that the demolition company produces a sound and safe methodology, one that has been suitably assessed and signed off,” he concludes. “If DSM sticks to what they have said they are going to do, that’s a good day. They have done that consistently. They have been extremely sensitive to the needs of the stakeholders while still getting the job done.”

Tooled Up Hillhead 2016 marks the international launch-pad for a new range of attachments and demolition tools from Rammer.
As a further nod towards system protection, the larger RCC models all feature forged and fully protected cylinder rods and heat-treated pins and bushes for a longer and low maintenance life. The smaller RCC04R might lack the powered rotation of its larger brothers but it too benefits from a number of technological advances. A patented pressure intensifier system, which is installed on both cylinders, allows the jaws to deliver optimum performance with the external hydraulic system operating at normal pressure. Not only does this enhance performance, delivering the crushing power of larger and heavier competitive models, it also helps protect the operator and maintenance personnel from exposure to high pressure systems.
The attachments - which include Cutter Crushers, Scrap Shears and Pulverisers – share many of the design and manufacturing quality characteristics that have made the company’s hydraulic hammer range the preferred choice among demolition contractors across the globe. The new Rammer Cutter Crusher (RCC) range is manufactured from wear resistant HB400 steel for a longer life. Suitable for carriers in the 3.0 to 130 tonnes operating weight range, the RCC models (except the 290 kg RCC04R) feature a chamfered jaw design for greater penetration and a speed valve and desynchronised jaws for more precise placement and faster cycle times.
Integrated oil filters help protect the boosters from impurities in the hydraulic oil while a regeneration and cleaning oil distributor maintains pressure at the required level, avoiding pressure peaks as well as reducing maintenance costs. The Rammer Scrap Shear (RSS) line-up is designed to withstand even the harshest demolition environments. Comprising nine models that are suitable for carriers in the 2.0 to 60 tonne operating weight range, the Rammer Scrap Shears are also manufactured from HB400 steel for optimum wear resistance and a long working life. They also share the same hydraulic rotation, rotation protection, heat-

All the new models feature a speed valve for improved cycle times and a smart jaw design that allows material to fall away from the cutting area, enhancing performance and increasing uptime. A double guide helps ensure excellent cutting jaw alignment for better cutting and lower owning and operating costs. A central pin adjustment system also helps prevent jaw deviation to maintain maximum cutting performance. This system is also proven to reduce operating costs by minimising the amount of material struck between the jaws. To further minimise owning and operating costs, each unit features cutting blades that have four usable sides that can be reversed. Tips can be replaced without welding to maintain high productivity levels.

Rammer is further demonstrating its commitment to customers in the demolition business with the launch of the new RPV Series of Rotating Pulverisers which comprises four models that are suitable for carriers in the 10 to 45 tonne operating weight class.

The RPV jaws are designed to allow crushed material to escape from the crushing area, reducing clogging, minimising maintenance and increasing productivity.
Like the other Rammer demolition tools, the RPV Series is manufactured from HB400 steel and features heat-treated pins and bushes for a long service life. Full hydraulic rotation – which is protected by a rotation protection system - facilitates more precise alignment for faster cycle times and greater productivity. A speed valve system reduces cycle times for greater productivity and helps reduce stress on the hydraulic components, extending their life and reducing owning costs.
59
The RPV Series has also been designed for simplified maintenance, with easy access to key components, And cutting blades and wear parts that can be changed “in the field without special tooling to return the Pulveriser to factory specifications. Completing the line-up of new Rammer demolition tools and attachments is the RSP range of Static Pulverisers which consists of six models with operating weights from 150 to 4,200 kg. These are suitable for carriers in the 1.5 to 45 tonne operating weight class. These new models share all the features of the RPV Series, aside from the hydraulic rotation, and provide an affordable yet high quality alternative.

Believe the Hype Demolition Magazine was among the first to see JCB’s revolutionary new Hydradig wheeled excavator. Mark Anthony reports. Research and development budgets redirected to satisfy the legislators rather than the customers. But with Tier 4 largely in the can and Tier 5 far enough away to be a problem for tomorrow, manufacturers are – at long last – getting back to what they do best.
case with the Hydradig. In fact, from the roof down through the cab and counterweight to the low-slung engine, the 11 tonne Hydradig has a stylish, almost automotive curve to it. In fact, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was the original Audi TT which, in an age of wedgeshaped and cloned cars, burst onto the scene with the confident swagger of a well-dressed man.
Regardless, I approached the launch of JCB’s much-lauded Hydradig concept with a degree of trepidation. The company is no slouch in the marketing department; and its slow-burn lead up to the launch of what it has described as a revolutionary machine had hogged social media headlines for more than a month. But that was always going to be a bold claim in a mature industry in which variations on a proven theme is the usual order of the day.
Of course, some super-curvy lines does not a revolution make. But those curvy lines are merely the wrapper within which a revolution resides. It all begins with the engine; a JCB Ecomax power pack delivering 81 kW, impressive levels of low rpm torque and which has no truck with diesel particulate filters (DPF). Nothing out of the ordinary there; the same engine powers a number of other JCB products. But part of the trick of the Hydradig is the location of the engine – Not packed behind the operator, obscuring his rearward vision but low-slung and side-mounted. This radical repositioning not only aids visibility – a great boost for site safety – it also lowers the Hydradig’s centre of gravity by 1.5 metres to aid stability. Indeed, JCB claim that the machine can lift 1,000 kg and slew through 360 degrees without the need for stabilisers or the need to drop the dozer blade.
Sadly, for a cynic like me, when the screen rose in the JCB theatre to reveal the machine in all its glory, my trepidation was replaced by admiration.
Automotive Curves Unlike the automotive industry in which aesthetic appeal is a key ingredient, construction equipment is very much a function over form sector where some of the best and most productive machines look like the back-end of a bus. That is not the
60
And the benefits of the engine relocation do not end there. By dropping the power pack, all key service points can be accessed from ground level. No more need for operators to climb onto the rear of the machine; no more need for “boxing ring” enclosures to stop them falling off either. security at road speeds, four-wheel and crab steering, providing maximum manoeuvrability on site. A front axle with +/- 8° of oscillation delivers excellent rough terrain traction and stability. An optional reverse steering button on
As if that were not enough, the engine drives through a hydrostatic powertrain that affords a step-less 0-40 km/hour speed range. It is unlikely that this will trouble the record-breaking JCB Dieselmax “streamliner” car but 40 km/hour makes the Hydradig supremely roadable whilst helping flatten out the inclines that have traditionally plagued wheeled excavators of a more traditional form factor.
the main console allows the operator to use all three steering modes while the cab is facing in either direction. Hydradig offers an incredibly tight turning circle of just 3,946 mm on single tyres, rising to 4,511 mm when equipped with a frontmounted dozer blade.
No More Nodding Near 50-50 weight distribution between the axles and a longer wheelbase than competitive 10-tonne machines delivers improved stability, increasing confidence for the operator. A 2,650 mm wheelbase provides a superior ride with secure handling. The lack of forward and back ‘nodding’ when driving means that Hydradig operators can maintain higher travel speeds between job sites, improving productivity, with JCB’s SRS boom suspension system available as an option to further improve ride comfort.
Boom Choice Customers can choose between a monoboom or a triple-articulating TAB boom, with three dipper lengths of 1,650, 2,000 and 2,250mm to suit a range of applications. Over the side stability, when running tyres alone, is 3% better than any competitive machine. All dig-end pins are equipped with impregnated bushes, allowing 500hour greasing intervals. The dipper nose geometry matches that of JCB’s 3CX backhoe loaders and the firm’s larger midi excavator models, permitting the use of a host of buckets and powered attachments.
The machine is equipped with three steering modes as standard. Two-wheel steering for
61
k i t ta l k Hydradig can be used with a variety of tilt-rotator models and can be equipped with mechanical and hydraulic quick hitches from the factory. A high flow auxiliary circuit is standard and the machine can be equipped with two low flow circuits, plus dedicated hydraulic circuits for quickhitch operation. Fully guarded hose burst check valves are available on the boom, dipper and bucket rams, for optimum lifting safety.
the Hydradig retains the boom, dipper and bucket combination and still has a wheel at each corner. The ultimate proof might well be JCB’s domestic market which has traditionally eschewed the wheeled excavator concept in favour of another JCB mainstay; the backhoe loader. So if you start seeing owner operators switching allegiance to the unquestionably versatile and stylish Hydradig, remember the revolution started here…and it’s been televised. See the exclusive video here: http://tinyurl.com/jn6auqr
A hand-held tool circuit is available as an option, allowing operatives to work with a wide range of powered hand tools, including breakers, road saws and pumps, utilising the hydraulic power from the Hydradig. Hydradig can also be ordered with single tyres, extra-wide flotation tyres or twin tyres on each axle. Customers can also choose between any combination of dozer blades and stabiliser legs at either end of the machine, providing a modular design that can be tailored to an individual operation. Both parallel lift and radial lift dozers are available. Hydradig can also be supplied with a choice of towing hitches, connected to the chassis or through the dozer blade. Capable of pulling up to 3.5 tonnes, the hitch comes complete with 12V electrics. JCB will offer a dedicated Hydradig trailer as an option, allowing a single machine to travel to site with a range of attachments. The machine’s reduced tailswing allows it to rotate and change attachments within a single road carriageway. So does all of this constitute a revolution; after all,

the performance and get detailed information from experienced Rockster employees and dealers. The R900 with screenbox meets an important customer demand: producing defined final grain in only one step. Based on a full hydraulic model, the mobile track-mounted impact crusher R900 is equipped with a generous entry opening of 900 x 720 mm and a heavy duty, four-hammer hard aggregate rotor, making operations possible not only in standard recycling applications, but also in areas involving hard or abrasive aggregates.
From 28 to 30 June, Rockster Recycler and its UK dealer International Crusher Solutions Ltd (ICS) will attract visitors with technologically leading crushing and screening solutions at the Hillhead Quarrying exhibition in Buxton, Derbyshire, UK. They will be present on stand C3 as well as in the registration area. Come and see the Rockster R900 impact crusher including the screenbox and return belt live in action crushing demolition debris to a size of 0-22 mm. Interested visitors could take this opportunity to check out the quality of the final grain as well as

The circular motion vibrating screen with a weight of only 2 tons is the perfect complement and can be assembled directly on the main discharge conveyor of the machine. No separate drive system is required to power the screenbox and return belt as they are driven by the additional hydraulic unit of the R900 (or R800 jaw crusher). The R900 model is also a very popular machine for using the patented Rockster Duplex-system, which allows an interchangeability of the crusher units on the models R900 and R800 (impact crusher and
jaw crusher). Thanks to the identical drive system, both units can be installed on the same basic frame. Within only a few hours the impact crusher can be transformed into a jaw crusher - and vice versa. Therefor the machine can be used - fast and efficiently - for many different applications, which leads to cost advantages and better machine utilisation.

Treble Top News from attachments specialist Northerntrack, like Leeds buses, apparently comes in threes. Firstly, the company has completed the relocation into new custom equipped premises in the heart of its native Leeds. This new site is handily located just a stone’s throw from the M621 motorway and just around the corner from the old workshop. “Moving to a new site has allowed us to plan and equip the space exactly for our needs. We’ve invested heavily in new ESAB plasma cutting systems and machinery to help improve our production processes and products,” says director Andy Hair. “The whole environment is a much nicer place to work, it’ll be a pleasure now to receive visits from our customers both old and new for a coffee and a chat.” The company has celebrated its relocation by becoming the sole UK dealer for the complete range of HYDRARAM demolition attachments. HYDRARAM has been manufacturing and supplying its range of equipment for over 20 years and are regular exhibitors at major construction fairs around the world. Most recently was at Bauma in Germany, where the company unveiled a number of new products to the market including the world’s largest concrete demolition pincers weighing over 14 tonnes. HYDRARAM offer a full
line of demolition and recycling attachments and has a vast stock of both new and quality used equipment available from their rental fleet. "Our partnership with this highly-respected Dutch supplier allows us to offer a much wider range of demolition and related attachments to our UK

customers. It also gives us access to a vast selection of quality new and used equipment from their extensive stocks,” Hair continues. “This will strengthen our position in the market, permitting us to reduce lead times for some new equipment whilst offering quality used alternatives for the time and cost conscious demolition contractor." As if that weren’t enough to keep Hair and his team busy, the company has also lifted the cyber covers on a brand new website: www.northerntrack.com. This new website brings together all the latest information and product data together with a selection of used stock and a regularly updated blog for news, events and job site reports.

k i t ta l k There are two schools of thought in business. Some would have you believe that pioneering a new market alone provides “first mover advantage” and leaves competitors playing catch-up. Others, notably Apple, will happily sit back and let others endure the trial and error associated with product development before swooping in and doing it all better. The hydraulic quick coupler sector has already been through the trial and error stage and is now a mature market that is filled to the rafters with competitors including, most notably, OilQuick and Lehnhoff. Indeed, at the recent Bauma exhibition in Germany, manufacturers were literally falling over themselves to get a slice of the quick coupler action. So the decision by BPH Attachments to enter the fray is either belated or an Apple-esque stroke of strategic genius. Certainly, the ProQuick – resplendent in the familiar BPH purple livery, looks the part. And during our visit to see it in action with Dorton Group, the German-built system performed every bit as well as its more established competitors.
Keep it Clean According to BPH, simplicity is the key to the ProQuick system. The company claims that it is the fastest and most-reliable coupler system on the market. Having seen it in action for little more than a few hours, I cannot speak for its long-term reliability.

k i t ta l k But the system is certainly no slouch. Attachments can be changed in a matter of seconds while the operator’s rear remains firmly planted in his seat. Like the OilQuick system from ECY Haulmark, ProQuick protects the hydraulics from the ingress of dirt and moisture and ensures that no oil is spilled during attachment changeovers. This is achieved via a fully automatic protective cap on both the carrier and the attachment that only opens when coupling. This helps protect the machine’s hydraulic circuits from dust, dirt and weather conditions for reduced downtime and longer system life. Suitable for excavators up to 240 tonnes, ProQuick can be changed at full system pressure (420 Bar), is capable of delivering up to 830 litres per minute of oil flow with no energy loss, and automatically connects any electrical or water lines.
Don’t Knock It What truly sets the system aside, however, is its ability to work with all attachments and quick couplers. “Our system is adaptable and suitable for all excavator sizes,” the company says. “The ProQuick hydraulic coupler system can be easily integrated into all conventional quick coupler systems with two to 32 hydraulic ports.” BPH Attachments’ arrival on the quick coupler scene is unquestionably belated. But it wasn’t the first into the hydraulic hammer market either yet there are plenty of purple breakers out there earning customers a living. So don’t knock it till you’re tried it. New Volvo for Cardiff Cardiff Demolition Co Ltd has opted for a new Volvo EC380E rigged for secondary demolition duties for the first time.
Normally associated with alternative excavator brands, Cardiff Demolition Co Ltd has opted for a new 38 tonne Volvo EC380E for its plant fleet. The machine was chosen after several factors were considered by managing director Phil Farnham.
80
k i t ta l k
These included a respected reputation Volvo excavators have attained in demolition applications and the fact that the EC380E offers the latest in engine technology and fuel saving efficiencies thanks to the installation of a Tier IV final engine.
providing safe access to the engine compartment; heavy duty belly plates and an X3 proportional rotation line to operate rotating selector grabs and shears. The X1 hammer and shear circuit (which comes as standard), has been modified to operate through a proportional valve as well. All the machine’s attachments will be picked up on a Tefra hydraulic quick hitch.
Cardiff Demolition’s new EC380E has benefitted from the addition of secondary demolition options which include SIPS (side impact protection system) rails along the machine’s superstructure; boom and bucket cylinder heavy duty protection guards; ‘boxing ring’ style hand rails and kick plates
The Stage IV Final 13 litre engine, featured in the EC380E develops 306 nett hp and is ideally

matched to its automatic sensing mode hydraulic system. The machine’s hydraulics are perfectly matched to the engine and are controlled by an advanced system which provides on-demand flow and reduces power losses within the circuit. Volvo’s unique ECO mode contributes up to 9% of the machine’s total improved efficiency over the D model– without any loss of performance in most operating conditions. As well as improving fuel efficiency, this increases controllability for more precise performance.
Otherwise, Volvo’s integrated work mode system offers the operator a choice of five work modes according to the task in hand – I (Idle), F (Fine), G (General), H (Heavy) or P (Power max) – for optimum efficiency and machine performance. When the controls have been inactive for a pre-set amount of time, the excavator can be programmed to automatically reduce engine speed or even shut down to further reduce fuel consumption and noise. Operators can keep track of both current and average fuel consumption via a simple gauge in the cab.
