INSITE A Social Whirl

It might be hard for you to believe if you are currently reading the paper edition of this magazine but – quite simply – Demolition magazine could not exist without the Internet or – more specifically – social media. I can – and often do – bask in the glory of a wellturned phrase or some finely crafted prose. But the fact remains that without Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and, more recently, Instagram, Demolition magazine would not and could not exist. And for that matter, neither could DemolitionNews.com, DemolitionJobs.co.uk or the recently introduced Kit Talk magazine. For an increasing number of people, newspapers and televisions are no longer their primary source of news; Twitter is. For an increasing number of people, YouTube videos have replaced written manuals as the primary source of “how to” guides. Before you think that this relates purely to us media luvvies, don’t forget that there are countless examples of demolition companies winning work, finding employees and building business relationships entirely online. And before you dismiss social media as a youthful fad, it is worth knowing that the largest source of traffic Demolition TV is in the 35 to 45 year old bracket. That is the reason we have recently renewed our drive on Instagram. It is why we introduced the new Kit Talk magazine. And it is why we have brought back Demolition TV for its long-awaited second season. The fact is that if you are reading this in paper form, you are in the minority. In fact, if a postman delivered this magazine to you, then you are one of the less than five percent of the magazine readership that still does so. Your fellow demolition professionals reading this online or via social media likely got their issue about a week before you. They have direct access to advertisers via the live URL links in the magazine. And they can (and believe me, they do) comment directly via any of the social media platforms mentioned above. In short, when it comes to the modern social media age if you’re not there, you’re not just square. You’re nowhere.

Back on the Box Following a brief and unplanned hiatus, Demolition TV is back on your small (and very small) screen for the long-awaited Season 2. Host Mark Anthony reports.

Of all the initiatives we set in place last year (our first-ever Yearbook, our first-ever book and our partnership with a dynamic, new publishing company) the most successful by a long way was our launch of Demolition TV. For those of you that have not yet had the pleasure, Demolition TV is a dedicated online TV channel dedicated to all-things demolition. It features ONLY demolition

equipment and demolition people and is likely to be of interest to nobody other than true demolition professionals. And now - following a brief lull caused by my own ill-health and a temporary inability to drive – it is back for Season 2.

Season 2

Describing the new shows as Season 2 unquestionably sounds like we have ideas above our lowly station. But as you will see from the first show (more of that shortly), Season 2 marks a step-change for the style of the shows. “2016 was very much a learning curve for us in the video sphere. Although we were supported throughout by the team at DemoVision, we had to learn what viewers wanted to watch, how long they were willing to watch before getting bored, and how often they were willing to

STUFF watch,” explains Mark Anthony. “Obviously, demolition professionals want to watch their counterparts (and themselves) going about their business. They want to see the latest kit, ideally in action. But they also want to be entertained.” Anthony says that the gradual honing of the video content has – in itself – been enlightening. “It is very easy to forget what a privileged role I have,” he says. “I am invited to sites, courted by equipment manufacturers, and shown things that most demolition men and women might never get to see. We wanted to put THAT on the screen.”

Horses for Courses

Another key lesson learned during 2016 was the need to amend content to suit the platform upon which it was being displayed. “Instagram has a video limit of one minute so there is no real scope there for narrative or story-telling. Instagram users want short form content that they can dip in and out of

quickly. Users of Twitter might be willing to watch a film of two minutes or more while viewers on Facebook tend to skip forward to the parts of the film that are relevant to them,” Anthony asserts. “Meanwhile, those watching on YouTube tend to do so during the evening when they can relax and watch 15 to 20 minutes of uninterrupted footage. And YouTube is the only when in which most people bother to switch on the sound and listen to the audio.”



STUFF Part of this learning has been a month-long experiment into the use of the Apple video editing software, iMovie. “I set myself the task of producing a one minute, Instagram-friendly movie each day for the whole of January 2017. I did it partly to teach myself iMovie to allow me to produce short films “on-the-run” and also to test my own self-discipline at producing a new film each day,” Anthony recalls. “I wouldn’t say I have mastered iMovie, although there was a marked improvement in the quality of the films over the month. But what did surprise me was the level of engagement from both existing and new-found followers.” At the beginning of the video blog (vlog) experiment, DemolitionNews had 1,113 followers on Instagram. At the time of writing, that number has topped 4,000 and is still rising, often by as many as 100 followers each day. “We have had some great feedback on the short films we have produced, and it has also allowed us to extend our global reach,” Anthony continues. “We have attracted new followers from across the globe, a surprisingly large number of which have then gone on to subscribe to DemolitionNews or to buy items from the Demolition News Store.”

Getting Personal

One of the key drivers of this success – and one that is reflected in the style of Demolition TV Season 2 – is a degree of personalisation. “I am far more comfortable behind the camera and I have a face for radio. But the most successful of our Vlog films were those in which I stepped in front of the camera and ‘interacted’ with the audience,” Anthony says. “I have watched professional vloggers like Casey Neistat and Ben Brown on YouTube for years now, primarily because they seem to lead such interesting and extraordinary lives. But I guess of you spend nine or ten hours a day driving an excavator, a film of someone touring the JCB factory or getting a behind-the-scenes look at a major demolition site

good sports As the sponsors of Sutton United and Lincoln City will testify, a good run in the FA Cup will provide more brand exposure than a linesman could wave a flag at. But sponsorship of professional sport is a mixed bag, according to Mick George Ltd’s finance director Jon Stump. With all the controversy surrounding professional sports, and in particular football, why would any unrelated business want to get involved and associate their brand through sponsorship? It’s a question that many have asked and attempted to answer, but an agreed conclusion has never really been reached, and the debate rolls-on. In some quarters, the risk of being caught up in high-profile scandals, or at the focal point of journalists, TV and radio ‘pundits’ intentionally trying to scaremonger or spin a negative story, is just too much of a gamble. Every day, radio stations, news channels and back pages of newspapers, that capture huge audiences are splattered with fresh talking points surrounding management, players and fans from football clubs up and down the country. Some of which have the potential to rumble on, leaving their mark long-term and rarely are those discussion topics of a positive nature.

As with most cases when you align your business alongside an external party, you lose a certain degree of control, exposing yourself to all sorts of threats. Nowhere is this more apparent than the footballing arena, due to the sheer attraction and appetite of observers to offer an opinion. Historically there have been drug, sex and race related

cases, involving icons held in high esteem within the sporting world, that due to their nature have brought about derogatory connotations to associated brands. Such activity has led to contractual discrepancies and a parting of ways between parties. And we all know what happened with Tiger Woods.

All of which begs the question of the benefits of such partnerships, and whether they’re really worthwhile. One company that firmly embraces sport sponsorship and the associated benefits is East Anglian-based, Construction Company, Mick George Ltd. The organisation is familiar with all sorts of connections that range from grass roots, to academy, right through to professional outfits. These aren’t just limited to the football domain either, having delved in to rugby, ice hockey, cricket and even cheerleading. Whilst the likes of Manchester United FC might be out of reach for the majority, thanks to agreements with super brands such as Chevrolet amounting to around £50 million per annum, there are still plenty of opportunities, which Mick George Ltd have proven. Having been official kit sponsors of Peterborough United FC and Cambridge United FC respectively, for the past three years, Northampton Town FC is the latest

addition to the list, in the form of its family enclosure sponsorship arrangement. “For us, sports sponsorship was a logical conduit to utilise as a channel to market. When you look at the key objectives of any advertisement, this option ticked a lot of boxes,” says Mick George Ltd finance director Jon Stump. “It offers unique benefits and networking opportunities, whilst differentiating from our competitors. Reaching out to a much broader audience, it targets all levels, from homeowners or tradesmen, to commercial and corporate business owners and other potential influencers.”

Supporter Engagement

As sport has become increasingly accessible through a variety of online channels and TV coverage, so has the space on teams’ shirts, cars, bats, hats and rackets. That is being exploited by brands engaging with sports sponsorship, notwithstanding stadium or programme space.

STUFF “There were many variables for consideration when we embarked on the sponsorships, but we concluded that the kit sponsorship was best placed to fulfil our main criteria,” Stump recalls. “Although this element is the main benefit of the partnership, we are actively involved in so much more to support the deal and promote our business.” Supporter engagement is fundamental to the sponsorship activation strategy of Mick George Ltd and that is particularly evident pre, post and during match-day at Peterborough United, Cambridge United or Northampton Town FC. A concerted effort is made to provide support for each of the respective clubs, through a digital or physical presence. Advertising channels for which the company invests, whether that be social media, blogs,

or newspaper adverts, are a wash of club related ‘good luck’ messages, fan competitions or photography, rather than typical Sales communications that you would come to expect. And then there’s a typical matchday which includes, ‘Mick the Skip’ Mascot, the Mick George Cheerleaders and the ‘Skip Challenge’ for half time entertainment, not to mention a number of hospitality offerings to supporters. Beyond all of that, and possibly most vital is the ‘money can’t buy’ experiences that the business offers to fans, Away Days in a Limousine, Fan v Player challenges, and even playing on the pitch alongside former club legends.

But, over and above that, sport sponsorship is a chance to invest in the local community and support a cause that many of our employees, customers and business associates have an affinity or emotional connection with,” Stump explains. “Indirectly the sponsorship impacts across the entire organisation. Association with professional and respected affiliates such as the Football clubs in question, endorses our ethos of high standards, helping to attract the right people when recruiting, or likewise, when we’re trying to win large contracts. Like club supporters, there is a feel good factor internally when any of the clubs we’re connected with are doing well.”

Steep Rise in Health & Safety Fines There were 19 fines of £1 million or more in 2016 – the largest being £5 million. This compares with three fines of £1 million or more in 2015 and none in 2014. The rise in fines is a result of the introduction of new sentencing guidelines for health and safety offences, which came into force on 1 February 2016.

The largest UK fines for health and safety incidents have increased substantially in the past year, with some of the biggest brands in business having to pay millions of pounds for failing to control serious risks to employees and the public.

It is hoped that the possibility of larger penalties will make employers take greater care to ensure people are not harmed by their activities, according to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This, IOSH says, can in turn help businesses become more successful. “Health and safety offences can ruin lives, devastate families and inhibit precious talent. Whilst you cannot put a value on human life, the level of fines now being handed out recognises society’s disapproval of serious corporate failures that lead to injury, illness and death. It reflects a desire to deter others

from making the same errors and takes significant steps forward in aligning penalties for these offences with other regulatory breaches in the UK,” says Shelley Frost, Executive Director of Policy at IOSH. “Protecting employees and others affected by a business’s operations will not only eliminate the risk of a large financial penalty but can also be key to ensuring and maintaining an organisation’s strong reputation and ultimately contributing to its success.” For the first anniversary of this change in legal guidance for the courts, IOSH, in association with Osborne Clarke LLP’s specialist health and safety legal team, has today revealed the results of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request exploring the impact of the new sentencing guidelines. This shows that the largest 20 fines imposed for health and safety offences last year cost the businesses involved a total of £38.6 million. In comparison, the largest 20 fines in 2015 and 2014 cost £13.5 million and £4.3 million respectively.

STUFF Not every fine in 2016’s largest 20 involved a fatality, with the guidelines deeming that it is enough for a company’s health and safety failings to have caused injury, or put people at substantial risk of injury or death, to warrant a large financial penalty. For example, the largest fine was the £5 million that Merlin Entertainments was ordered to pay after five people were seriously hurt in a rollercoaster crash at its Alton Towers theme park. Following the sentencing, the organisation said its focus on safety is “sharper and more engrained than ever”. The broken leg and dislocated ankle suffered by actor Harrison Ford while filming Star Wars: the Force Awakens resulted in a £1.6 million fine for Foodles Production. The HSE said it could have resulted in more serious injury or even death. Foodles stated: “The safety of our cast and crew was always a top priority and we deeply regret this unfortunate onset accident. The Court acknowledged both the additional safety protocols that were immediately implemented, and that it was a very safe production in all other respects.” Most fines imposed by courts in 2016 related to health and safety offences which took place before the guidelines were introduced. “The increase in fines being issued by the

courts demonstrates a desire to drive the message home that ensuring health and safety within a working environment is fundamental. So while fines regularly exceeded the million pound mark last year, we can expect to see even larger fines going forward,” says Mary Lawrence, a partner at law firm Osborne Clarke LLP. “I see many businesses who focus on the safety and health of employees and others experiencing a broad range of benefits, including being better placed to attract and retain talent, scoring points in procurement processes for valuable contracts or even when seeking external investment.” Before the introduction of the guidelines, there was little assistance for courts sentencing health and safety offences. The 2016 guidelines, a 40-plus page document, provide a step-by-step guide for sentencing both companies and individuals for health and safety, and food, offences. This includes taking into account the turnover of the organisation, the level of culpability and the likelihood that the failing could lead to harm and how bad the harm could be. A summary report and analysis of the FOIA request data by IOSH and Osborne Clarke, with advice on how to prevent serious breaches that lead to fines, is available from www.iosh.co.uk/sentencingguidelines

The Elephant in the Room There’s a new view at Blackpool Zoo after one of the former aircraft hangars on the site was demolished by Manchester-based MCW Plant using the company’s new ‘jumbo’30 tonne Hyundai HX300 L, fitted with a Daemo DMS250 sheer.

Clearing the debris is a new 12.5 tonne Hyundai R125LCR-9A that is fitted with a Daemo DMC140 pulverizer, which was delivered to site last week. Both machines were supplied to MCW Plant by Hyundai dealer, HES Enterprises, based in Irlam Manchester. The hangar building, adjacent to the main entrance building and Playbarn, was demolished following a safety inspection where it was deemed unsafe and condemned, MCW Plant, owned and run by managing director, Mark Watson, won the contract.

Part of the zoo, including the main entrance building, is made up of former hangars dating back to the site’s use as an airfield. The hangar which has been demolished was not in public use and plans are not currently in place to build a new structure on the plot. With the old building now gone there’s now a spectacular view of ‘Project Elephant’. The space where the demolished hangar stood will continue to be used for storage and for staff parking. Blackpool Zoo is currently developing a new elephant house which will replace the current outdated structure. The

ON SITE brand-new state of the art Project Elephant is due to open this summer and will cover three acres. It will include one of the largest indoor elephant experiences in the UK when it opens to the public in the summer. “The Hyundai machines are very robust and ultra-reliable. We also have in our fleet a R16-9 mini with breaker and grapple. That machine will do the work of four men on strip out jobs. It’s a great little machine, it never stops,” says MCW Plant managing director Mark Watson. “Our HX300 is very powerful - even when operating in eco mode, and the fuel-efficiency is second to none, which is a major concern these days, with fuel costs rising. The cab in the HX300 is also very comfortable - it’s a pleasure to operate even 10 hours a day. Visibility is also spot on in this machine - the AAVM all-round vision camera is superb especially whilst working in a tight spot.” Watson reports that utilisation levels have been greatly enhanced by the purchase of some strategicallyselected specialist attachments. “Our latest purchase from HES was the Hyundai R125LCR-9A zero tail swing

Not Shorts of Work Shorts Demolition, part of the Shorts Group have been awarded the demolition contract on Suttons Business Park in Reading.

Commissioned by Standard Life Assurance Limited, Shorts are acting as Principal Contractor to remove three large business units on the park.

Shorts Demolition is working alongside its waste management team to remove and screen the material to be recycled.

The demolition contract started just four weeks’ ago and two of three buildings are well on their way to nearing the floor. All three units contained asbestos. Units 68 and 69 are two storey office buildings, with a steel frame with brick/block infill walls, glazed windows, concrete floors and tiled roof coverings.

The two buildings are scheduled to be completely demolished by the end of January and Shorts will then start demolishing the third business unit.

Mosque Building Comes Downwell



ON SITE Downwell Demolition is demonstrating a formidable combination of sensitivity and destructive power during the demolition of a fire-damaged building that was part of the UK’s largest mosque. Demolition’s Mark Anthony braved the frigid temperatures to visit the site.

On 26 September last year, a fire broke out in an administration building immediately adjacent to the UK’s largest mosque in Morden, south west London. The fire, which was ultimately extinguished by 10 fire engines and more than 70 firefighters, reached temperatures of around 3,000 degrees. Sufficient to melt computers and furniture and to bow the structural steel, the fire decimated the ground and first floors of the admin building and threatened to engulf the

library next door before being brought under control.

House of Victories

The Baitul Futuh Mosque (the name means House of Victories in English) is a mosque complex in Morden, London. It is Britain’s largest mosque, and one of the largest in western Europe. In August 2013, the mosque played host the largest Eid al Fitr celebration in the UK, as 15,000 marked the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Completed in 2003 at a total cost of approximately £15 million, entirely from donations of Ahmadi Muslims in the UK, the mosque covers an area of more than 2.0 hectares and the complex can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers. It is located in the south-west London suburb of Morden, London Borough of Merton, next to Morden South railway station, approximately 200 metres from Morden Underground station where the infamous Northern Line comes to an abrupt but welcome end.

Downwell Demolition won the contract to demolish the fire-damaged portions of the complex following a brief tender and negotiation process. “The contract negotiation process could not have been more straightforward and amicable,” says Downwell Demolition’s Michael Corridan. “The client told us what was required, we offered our recommendations and a price, and we received the go ahead and an order just a few days later.”

Perhaps surprisingly, given the building’s close proximity to a place of prayer, the contract has remarkably few extraordinary restrictions. Indeed, the only real caveat is ensuring that the

Access All areas UK construction equipment giant JCB recently hosted its latest International Press Event to show off a plethora of new, improved and left-field additions to its extensive range. Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony was there.

For almost 30 years, I have made an annual pilgrimage to the JCB World Headquarters for one of the company’s international press events. Like the product range and the factory itself, these events have grown and grown to become one of the highlights of the plant writer’s annual calendar. This latest event was no exception with new and improved machines and components and a few out of left field developments for us plant scribes to enthuse over and for plant buyers to add to their shopping lists. And while last year’s launch of the much-vaunted Hydradig was always going to be a tough act to follow, JCB certainly had a few surprises up its sleeve, including a first proper foray into the powered access arena. While the first machines – a range of nine electric scissor lifts – are “industrial” in nature, they mark just a starting point for a diversification that will see the launch of several new construction-focused booms at ConExpo in just a few weeks’ time.

Powering Up

JCB is boosting the fuel efficiency, productivity and performance of its heavier crawler excavators with the installation of Tier 4 Final diesel engines. The six-cylinder MTU 6R1000 - already proven in JCB’s largest wheeled loader - will be used in the JS300, JS330 and JS370. The 7.7-litre MTU diesel engine is a highly efficient turbocharged and intercooled powerplant delivering 180 kW in the JS300 and 210 kW for the JS330 and JS370 models. The machines incorporate Selective Catalytic Reduction within the exhaust system, with dosing of a Ureabased Diesel Exhaust Fluid to reduce NOx emissions by almost 90 percent. This system allows the engine to meet Tier 4 Final without having to use a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), reducing cost and service complexity for the customer. Their

introduction means fuel savings for customers of up to 10 percent on the JS370 and five percent on the JS300 and JS330. The excavators are equipped with a 47-litre DEF tank and the fluid is used at a rate of around 3% compared to fuel consumption. This means that operators will need to top up the DEF tank, which is located within the top toolbox, with every third tank of diesel. The excavators will feature a warning system incorporated within the JS excavators’ main monitor. This will provide operators with graduated warnings of reducing DEF levels to prevent automatic downrating if the DEF tank is not replenished. By upgrading to the MTU engine, JCB has been able to reduce the number of fuel filters required from three to two, reducing operating costs for customers. A fuel shut-off tap has also been fitted to make service work easier. The air cleaner has also been upgraded, with the JS machines moving to a new power core unit. This air cleaner uses an ultra-web nano fibre technology that delivers increased dust

holding capability. The unit is three times more efficient than a pleated filter, yet offers increased airflow. It is stronger and more durable and, with the option of a scavenger pre-cleaner, there is no requirement for a vacuator valve. Access to the engine has been improved, with the adoption of a single-piece canopy. The steps have been redesigned with an extended lower step as part of a two-tier toolbox. The bottom tier provides access to the standard refuelling pump, while the upper section contains the DEF/AdBlue filler. Tread plates have been installed on the steps and the upper structure, plus the machines now benefit from a standard riser handrail, side handrail and kickplates for added safety. Optional full surround ‘boxing ring’ handrails are available if preferred.

Customers can also specify a Plus Pack for the three excavators. This includes a deluxe operator seat, a radio, footrests and T-bar tracking levers in the cab. Externally the Plus Pack incorporates a black revolving frame, a rain guard, six LED worklights, the scavenger pre-cleaner and Plus decals on the door.

The new PBS system is being launched as an option on the 19-tonne JCB 457, with plans to roll out the feature to the rest of JCB’s wheeled loader range. JCB PBS uses triple antennas mounted on the wheeled loader, which generate a detection zone around the machine. Operatives on site are equipped with a vibrating transponder, usually attached to a safety helmet. If the person enters the safety ‘bubble’ around the machine, the transponder will vibrate to warn the operative that they’ve entered a danger zone.

The JCB Proximity Braking System (PBS) which has been developed in collaboration with FCC Environment (UK) - automatically sounds an alarm in the cab and applies the vehicle’s brakes if a person enters a preset exclusion zone around the machine. This potential collision is then recorded on the machine’s MCU, with date and time information, so that further investigation can be carried out as to why the individual entered the machine’s danger zone. This can be used to highlight further safety improvements that can be carried out on site. The JCB Proximity Braking System can be fitted to multiple machines on a single site. It is particularly suited to heavily trafficked working areas, such as waste and recycling projects. Installation of the system requires a site visit and assessment, to understand the site operation, check on walkways, traffic routes and other site-specific variables that can affect the operation of the system.

New Heights

JCB has expanded its telescopic handler range with the addition of the new 540-180 HiViz. According to the company, the 540-

180 offers greater performance and lifting capability than its 17 metre stablemate the 540-170 – despite being 20 percent smaller in overall dimensions. Its launch brings to 30 the number of Loadall models in the range. The 540-180 HiViz has been specifically built to meet the needs of rental companies and contractors, offering reduced cost of ownership, faster cycle times and best in class visibility, with improved lift height and increased forward reach. At just 2.35 metres wide and 6.26 metres long it is possible to move two machines on a single curtain sided truck or low loader, reducing transport costs. The 540-180 Loadall has a lift height of 17.5 metres and a maximum forward reach of 13.5 metres. At just 11,330 kg however the new model is seven percent lighter than its stablemate, thanks to a strengthened fourstage, chain-driven boom and improved chassis construction. The synchronised boom design provides smooth and precise boom movements with

A regenerative Smart Hydraulic system on the optional single lever control uses gravitational force to aid lower and retract functions, also reduces energy required during operation. The chain driven boom, which uses an innovative chain adjustment system for reduced maintenance, also allows for a reduced hydraulic pump capacity with no loss of productivity. Indeed the 540-180 delivers 12 percent greater efficiency when placing a load, offering speed without compromising performance or safety. The telehandler is also equipped with groundlevel tie-down points for easier transportation. The 540-180 is powered by JCB’s proven SmartPower Tier 4 Final EcoMAX diesel engine, delivering 55 kW with no requirement for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) additive, reducing operating costs for the customer. This drives through a four-speed JCB Powershift transmission with a maximum travel speed of 29 km/ hour. Three is the Magic Number

Production is set to get underway of a brand-new fuel-efficient JCB engine following a £31 million investment programme. JCB announced in 2011 that it was launching a new engine development project with the help of £4.5 million from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund. Now, the company has unveiled the results of that investment for the first time – a brand new three litre engine. It is the third engine line to be launched by JCB since production first started in 2004 at JCB Power Systems in Derbyshire and joins the 4.4, 4.8 and 7.2 litre

The totally new 3.0 litre fuelefficient JCB430 DieselMax engine is also 30% lighter than JCB’s popular 4.4 litre EcoMax engine and has been designed specifically for mid-range construction and industrial equipment operating cycles. The engine meets the relevant emissions legislation without any requirement for a costly Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or any form of exhaust additive or aftertreatment. This will make it an ideal powerplant for a wide range of mid-weight construction and industrial equipment. The engine has been designed to be ready for Stage V emissions standards and it will be available with additional power ratings in the future. JCB Power Systems has opted to use automatic valve adjustors for the first time on the engine. This means that there is no requirement for any form of regular valvetrain adjustment, reducing downtime for customers and boosting productivity. The 3.0 litre unit also features integrated glow plugs, for faster cold starting.

The engine’s Mass Air Flow meter system, which allows the ECU to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine regardless of temperature, altitude and air density, has been integrated into the engine itself, minimising the amount of air inlet system development and engine set-up work required for different machine configurations. Mounting interfaces are shared with those of the larger 4.4 and 4.8 litre engines, making installation in existing equipment easier. The TM320 also gets cylinder end damping as standard, to refine the operating experience when the telescopic section of the boom is fully extended and when the boom is retracted and lowered. Raising the Bar

JCB has signalled its intention to become a major player in the $8 billion powered access market by entering the sector for the first time

with the launch of a brand new range. By the end of 2017 the newly-launched JCB Access business will be offering a total of 27 new platforms, including scissors, articulated booms and telescopic boom machines. The exciting new move is geared to grab a slice of a market where 130,000 units a year are sold – generating an annual revenue of $8 billion. The scissor lifts weigh between 1,330 and 3,366 kg. The two smallest models (S1530e & S1930e) have platforms measuring 1.64 metres long by 0.76 metres wide, while all larger models use a 2.5 metre long platform, apart from the largest S4550E model which has a 2.64 metre long working area. The machines are rated for basket capacity from 227 kg to a maximum of 550 kg. The electric scissors are powered by four 6V or 12V batteries, with hydraulic drive. Three

KIT TALK diesel models will be introduced later in 2017. JCB will introduce four articulated booms in 2017, with platform heights of 14.9 metres through to 24.6 metres. All four models will be offered with four wheel drive and twowheel steer, delivering up to 40 percent gradeability and a maximum stowed driving speed of up to seven km/hour. These will be joined by a 13.7 metre platform height AJ45E electric powered articulating boom model in quarter three. The electric model has two wheel drive and two wheel steering, with up to 30 percent gradeability. The AJ50D diesel articulating boom is powered by a JCB Diesel by Kohler engine, while the other three articulated models and all telescopic models use the JCB by Kohler engine already proven in many of JCB’s compact machines. These engines all meet Tier 4 Final emission standards, making them suitable for the North American and European

markets. Load capacities range from 227-250 kg, again enough for two occupants and tools. A range of 10 diesel-powered telescopic booms will also be added throughout 2017. These will offer platform heights from 20.6 to 45.6 metres. There will be a high degree of parts commonality between the three model ranges. The new JCB Access products - designed inhouse to meet the needs of rental companies and contractors worldwide - will initially be offered in the UK, France, Germany and North America. The JCBs Access range has been certified by TUV ensuring the highest product quality standard. It will also comply with the latest ANSI & CSA legislation.

The higher speed axles are available in standard open differential format or with a limited slip differential in the front axle, for improved loader performance. Operation is similar to the larger 409 compact wheeled loader, with the existing two-mode rocker switch on the joystick and a second

Turquoise Turns Green Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) has announced the arrival of its latest version of the 50-tonne conventional earthmoving and construction excavator SK500LC-10.

This latest Generation 10 machine incorporates many new detail changes but is particularly marked for being designed to provide exceptionally low emissions and increased working performance to maintain unparalleled working efficiency. The SK500LC-10 is also the latest Kobelco excavator to comply with the Stage 4 (Tier IV) exhaust emissions regulations. Superior strength and power are the key to high performance and the new SK500LC-10 provides this via the driving force of a Hino intercooled turbo-charged, six-cylinder diesel engine. This provides an uprated performance specification of 1.470Nm of torque and, in turn, 271 kW of power. In working terms, the SK500LC-10 provides a digging force of 267kN as standard and 292kN with Power Boost engaged, as well as an increased digging volume of 13 percent (in H mode). Fuel efficiency through refinement is an important factor with customers and Kobelco, with more than 80 years of manufacturing and design experience, is a leading force in reduction of customer operating costs. The fuel consumption of the SK500LC-10 has improved by approximately six percent in Ecomode/S-mode compared to the former (dash9) model, while maximising fuel efficiency in H-mode.


KIT TALK Kobelco design quality is also highlighted with the SK500LC-10’s latest cooling system. An all new hydraulically-driven twin fan engine cooling system replaces the traditional fan belt design to reduce engine workload – in certain applications a traditional cooling fan can take nearly five percent of available engine performance. The hydraulic version also prevents over-cooling by use of integrated sensors to reduce the speed of the twin-fan unit. As a result, the new system, along with the arm interflow, promotes increase in fuel efficiency and reliability. Enhancing reliability are new filter components regarding fuel (new pre-filter and water trap design) and hydraulics. The SK500LC-10 is designed to ensure a minimal future carbon-footprint. Technically advanced systems featured in the engine’s dynamics have been designed especially for this reason: DOC (Diesel Oxidisation Catalyst), and the combination of SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) act to reduce the amount of DEF/AdBlue fluid consumption and, of course, meet stringent Stage 4 (Tier IV) emissions regulations.

KIT TALK Different model configurations of the SK500LC-10 are available for different working applications and also to assist in transportation to working sites. The LC (Long Crawler) is the standard SK500LC-10 version. The VLC (Variable Long Crawler) variant of the SK500LC-10 features a mechanicallyadjustable undercarriage to change the machine’s gauge. On its wide setting, stability is ensured. Retracted (narrow) is beneficial to transportation logistics in countries with transportation limitations. The ME (Mass Excavation) version features shorter boom and arm configuration to promote the use of a larger bucket e.g. to use in certain quarry/mine applications. This configuration is only available with the SK500VLC-10. An option to add 600 mm double-grouser shoes to the standard triplegrousers are also available. Serviceability and operator refinement on the SK500LC-10 is greatly enhanced. The upper deck/cabin layout enables easy access to the

engine compartment for daily operator checks and scheduled servicing needs. The spacious cabin has also been updated in-line with the other Generation 10 machines and features the latest media unit and air-con delivery vents for maximum effect. Operator control levers have a lighter-feel, and a new ‘lock’ lever and control lever box are also featured. High durability working performance of Kobelco construction machinery in all areas of work is amplified by Generation 10 machines; the very latest in hydraulic design and manufacturing features throughout SK500LC-10. One such area is the hydraulic oil return system, which now utilises two oil filters to dramatically reduce the risk of contamination and harmful clogging. The new filters also promote long-term durability of all components in the hydraulic circuitry due to 1.8 times greater filtration capacity compared to Dash 9 models. A new pump drain filter is also in place.

A Tale of No Tail During February’s Executive Hire Show, A&Y Equipment Ltd will unveil the Yanmar ViO12 mini-excavator for the first time in the UK.

This zero tail swing machine has an operating weight of 1,235 kg and the longest undercarriage in its class at 1,440 mm. The extendable undercarriage from 830 mm to 1,000 mm gives the machine excellent stability as well as a smooth operation. Erkat is based in Hämbach, Germany, and has sales and service locations worldwide. The company makes drum cutter attachments for excavators used primarily in construction and demolition and for quarries and tunnels. According to Atlas Copco, the Erkat brand name is recognised for premium quality and continuous innovation. The company employs 38 people. “Drum cutters are an ideal complementary product for Atlas Copco as a solution provider in rock excavation, tunnel and foundation profiling and demolition,” said Vladimir

Kozlovskiy, President of Atlas Copco´s Construction Tools Division. In demolition and rock excavation today, a new technology is breaking through, mainly driven by legislation, to reduce sound and vibration, but also due to better performance in certain applications and material properties. “Drum Cutters close the gap in certain applications between the ordinary buckets which are suitable for soil excavation and the highly sophisticated hydraulic breakers which are used in hard rock extraction,” adds Kozlovskiy. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017.

More Volvos for Ashcourt Group The Hull-based Ashcourt Group has continued to add more machines to its growing plant fleet from Volvo Construction Equipment during 2016 and most recently, has taken delivery of a 22 tonne EC220E for its Foster Street recycling centre.

In total the company has now purchased in excess of 40 Volvo’s since October 2013. Just over one year ago, the company acquired a large recycling facility and concrete batching plant located at Foster Street in Hull as an important addition to the company’s portfolio. The recycling facility handles a wide variety of inert waste product including a high proportion of waste wood which is processed and recycled for biomass. In order to process and re-handle this material through the plant, Ashcourt has added a Volvo EC220E specifically rigged for the task in hand with a hydraulically elevating operator’s compartment to aid the safe loading of high sided bulkers, and a rotating Kinshofer selector grab. The 22 tonne machine is ideally sized for working in

the material bays having a forward reach of 9.5 metres and a practical load over height of 6.4 metres and to minimise damage to the concrete pad, the machine has been supplied with optional city pads or rubber blocks bolted to the standard 700 mm track pads. The EC220E is powered by a six cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp and features the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. Two variable displacement hydraulic pumps deliver 207 l/min each providing plenty of hydraulic power to the front end equipment. Besides the hammer/shear lines that come as standard, the EC220E has had the optional x3 rotation circuit added to facilitate the use of the rotating selector grab.
