INSITE Waste Crime on the Rise

I was lucky enough to be invited to a dedicated Waste and Recycling Event hosted by JCB at its World Headquarters and attended by the great and the good of the waste management sector. One of the guest speakers was Chris Murphy, deputy CEO of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM) who took the opportunity to highlight the growing issue of so-called “waste crime”. According to Murphy, waste crime is costing the UK economy more than £600 million each year. He also stated that while the Environment Agency has managed to close down some 1,000 illegal waste sites, another 1,000 have sprung up in their place. Little wonder then that Environment Agency chief executive Sir James Bevan has described waste crime as “the new narcotics”. Offences, sometimes involving organised crime gangs, range from the illegal dumping of household and industrial waste to massive frauds involving recycling fees and landfill tax. “With drugs it took a while for the system to catch up and realise the damage drugs were doing. We are clear now about the damage waste crime does to communities and to the economy,” says Bevan. “The strategy is to work with the good guys and really nail the bad guys. As the statistics show we haven’t cracked it yet and it will be a long grind, but we are making progress.” Admirable indeed. But I can’t help think that the UK Government is now reaping what it sowed during a period of landfill site closures and waste material reclassification and a continued use of Landfill Tax as a cash cow with – apparently – no upper limits. Couple that with a planning system in which local authorities publicly aspire to green credentials but which privately throw endless obstacles in the path of new recycling centres, and it is little wonder that domestic, commercial and industrial waste winds up by the roadside. No demolition company that I know would knowingly send waste materials to an illegal site. But knowingly is a big word; and if you’re working away from your normal territory, how can you tell that the local waste company isn’t diverting your arisings from a licensed landfill and into a farmer’s field in the dead of night? Aside from the environmental damage being wrought upon this green and pleasant land by the perpetrators of waste crime, the most annoying aspect of all this is that any Environmental Agency clampdowns will penalise the demolition industry; a sector that views waste as its mortal enemy and which sets a global standard in the field of materials recycling, re-use and resale.

STUFF Faced with a deepening housing crisis, London’s developers are returning to the tower block to provide a solution with high rise structures springing up at an unprecedented rate. But is today’s housing answer merely mean an insurmountable question for the demolition contractors of the future? Mark Anthony reports. New London Architecture (NLA) with research partner GL Hearn and data provided by EG London Residential Research has announced the results of the latest review of London’s changing skyline. The London Tall Buildings Survey provides the only comprehensive review of all towers over 20 storeys proposed, in planning or under construction. According to the survey, there are now 455 towers in the pipeline and - despite a tumultuous year with high levels of uncertainty and market disruption due to Brexit - the capital saw construction start on almost one tall building a week. Construction began on 48 tall buildings in 2016, an increase of 68 per cent on the 29 that started in 2015.

5

Tall buildings are being completed at a significant rate too – there was a 150 per cent increase from 2015 (26 compared to 10), far above any level London has seen before. There are currently close to 100 tall buildings under construction many of which are at late stages of construction – 28 are expected to complete in 2017 and 40 in 2018. Since the survey began four years ago 60 tall buildings have been completed.

stuff History Repeating

As someone that spent his formative years in a tower block looking towards Battersea Power Station, my immediate reaction to these findings was, simply, here we go again. Faced with a burgeoning population and a housing stock that had not recovered from the destructive attentions of the Luftwaffe, London and most other UK cities turned to the “new-fangled” tower blocks to solve a worsening housing crisis. History has taught us that this solution was, in fact, merely creating a problem for the future. Those blocks were, almost without exception, hideous concrete monoliths that were barely fit for human accommodation when they were built, and not even fit for dogs when they reached their sell-by date.

reach that operates vertically, the high reach is out. Similarly, explosives were a major no-no long before potential public panic over a terrorist attack became a thing. Assuming that a technological epiphany doesn’t hit the industry in the next few decades, that basically leaves the industry of the future with one viable solution – Top down or piecemeal demolition. On the face of it, that’s fine. The industry has become adept at top down demolition. And the industry of the future will likely have access to detailed BIM information, ensuring that the contractors encounter far fewer surprises than we do today.

Of course, those tower blocks that were built in the 1960s and 1970s have provided a good living for demolition contractors pretty much ever since. Indeed, the 455 towers said to be in the pipeline in London will almost certainly add more grist to demolition’s mill as old structures are removed to make way for these shiny new edifices. But the shiny new blocks that are helping line the pockets of demolition men in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow today will be a major challenge for their successors in 20 or 30 years’ time.

Rise of the HIGH Rise

I lived on the top floor of a tower block in Battersea, South London until I was about nine years old. I still recall relatives being astounded by the staggering height of the block and the four or five identical blocks that surrounded it. My block – and those around it – were five storeys high. The blocks surveyed by NLA are all in excess of 20 storeys. Today’ high reach excavators are more than a match for a 20-storey block, so long as it is surrounded by plenty of space. In a busy city like London, space is not just at a premium; it is an endangered species. So, unless someone at Kocurek Excavators can cook up a zero tailswing super high

stuff What’s the Problem?

So what’s the problem, I hear your unborn offspring cry? Well first and foremost, when you whittle an industry down to just one viable methodology, the only competitive advantage those contractors of the future will have is price. As the towers of today rise up, so the contractors of the future could be facing a race to the bottom. And the challenges will likely not end there. Having learned the lessons of the past, the tower blocks built in recent years and which are being built as we speak are not awful, slab-sided concrete monuments to low-cost construction and sub-standard materials. Rather, they are highly-engineered and complex structures featuring acres of glass and steel together with other advanced materials for which there are no current demolition or recycling solutions… because we have not yet needed those solutions.

“EG Data reveals tall buildings continue to come through the planning system, at a staggeringly high level, especially relative to just 5 to 10 years ago,” concludes EG’s Paul Wellman. “If Londoners haven’t noticed the activity of tall buildings around them, they soon will. That’s because more and more are getting off the drawing board and are coming out of the ground.”

And the sector is highly innovative. In the 20, 30 or 40 years until today’s blocks go the way of the high rises of the past, it is likely that the industry will devise new ways to tackle the blocks of the future. It will need to. Keeping Noise in Check Campbell Associates recently provided Murphy Survey’s with robust and cost effective noise and vibration monitoring equipment for their project at Children’s Hospital in Dublin: a large-scale project that involved considering the environmental impacts of construction on residential neighbours, surrounding listed buildings and the hospital itself. By using the AVA vibration monitor and the Sonitus Systems noise monitor, they have remotely monitored their site activity around the clock throughout their project.

without costly and unnecessary site visits. The second feature was the automatic alert function, that alerts any designated contact via SMS or email whenever the limits have been exceeded, saving time and manpower on measurement collection.

There were two key features that lead Murphy Survey’s to choose the AVA and Sontius systems for their project. The first was the ability to access data remotely via the online portal. This gave them real-time measurement data, enabling them to reach data anywhere, at any time, from any device,

Murphy Survey’s wanted flexible products they could rely on, which came highly recommended and they found just that in the AVA and Sonitus systems.

stuff Putting the Brakes on Collisions An innovation from global equipment giant JCB might just solve the problem of collisions between men and machines. Mark Anthony reports.

Between the launch of the revolutionary Hydradig wheeled excavator and the unveiling of the skid steer/telehandler hybrid – the Teleskid – JCB seems to be enjoying something of a golden period for innovation. Yet strangely, the most exciting and far-reaching innovation to roll out of the company’s imposing Staffordshire World Headquarters is largely invisible to the naked eye and – ironically – helps overcome the challenge of largely invisible site workers.

PBS Unveiled

The company used a recent Waste and Recycling event to officially launch a brand new safety system for its wheeled loaders that reduces the risk of on-site collisions between man and machine.

12

The JCB Proximity Braking System (PBS) - which has been developed in collaboration with FCC Environment (UK) - automatically sounds an alarm in the cab and applies the vehicle’s brakes if a person enters a pre-set exclusion zone around the machine. In addition the system automatically puts the vehicle into neutral and applies the parking brake. In harmony with this, the at-risk worker is also warned of the danger of a moving machine through a vibrating transponder attached to their hard hat. The new PBS system is being launched as an option on JCB’s flagship wheeled loader, the 19-tonne JCB 457, with plans to roll out the feature to the rest of JCB’s wheeled loader range.

stuff The JCB Proximity Braking System can be fitted to multiple machines on a single site. It is particularly suited to heavily trafficked working areas, such as waste and recycling projects. Installation of the system requires a site visit and assessment, to understand the site operation, check on walkways, traffic routes and other site-specific variables that can affect the operation of the system.

The main features of PBS include: • • • • •

Detection zone providing a ‘bubble’ around the machine Vibrating transponder to warn workers Audible warning in the cab for the machine operator Automatic braking to help reduce the risk of a collision Ideal safety system for a range of industry sectors

One of the first companies to put the PBS to the test is waste management and recycling company FCC. “As one of the UK’s leading waste and resource management companies, we take health and safety seriously across all of our facilities in England, Scotland and Wales. We identified a need to reduce the risk of accidents in relation to our mobile plant and we approached potential partners with an auto braking concept,” says Paul Stokes, FCC’s Head of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality. “JCB went the extra mile to develop the Proximity Braking System for us and we are delighted that this system is now available to the rest of our sector and beyond.”

Enter the Bubble

JCB PBS uses triple antennas mounted on the wheeled loader, which generate a detection zone around the machine. Operatives on site are equipped with a vibrating transponder, usually attached to a safety helmet. If the person enters the safety ‘bubble’ around the machine, the transponder will vibrate to warn the operative that they’ve entered a danger zone. At the same time, the transponder also communicates with the machine, triggering an audible alarm in the cab and alerting the operator to the potential collision, whilst automatically applying the machine’s braking system, bringing the loader to a halt. This potential collision is then recorded on the machine’s MCU, with date and time information, so that further investigation can be carried out as to why the individual entered the machine’s danger zone. This can be used to highlight further safety improvements that can be carried out on site and to develop on-site training as necessary.

JCB itself is clearly delighted with the new development and has plans to roll it out across its wheel loader range. “Safety on-site is of paramount importance,” concludes JCB Chief Innovation and Growth Officer Tim Burnhope. “We are delighted to launch the new JCB Proximity Braking System which drastically reduces the risks to pedestrians.” To see the Proximity Braking System in action, please check out this exclusive video: https://youtu.be/DRS5B1S9o5E

A&Y Equipment Ltd will be showing a number of key products from its Ammann, Yanmar and Cormidi ranges at the show, located on both the static stand and demo area. A variety of Yanmar excavators from 1 through to 10 tonne are being exhibited, both zero tail swing (ViO) and semi zero (SV). It will be the first time for many to see the new and improved 5 tonne class ViO50-6. Its newly designed cab and increases in power and stability have made it a popular seller in 2017. The Vi012 micro that debuted at the Executive Hire Show will also be on the stand. Since its first appearance, a number of these have been sold with one user who says they treat it like a 1.5 tonne machine but with the compactness of a one tonner. A machine that always turns heads and gets a lot of interest on social media and on sites is the SV100 with its twopiece boom. This 10 tonne Yanmar uses the traditional boom configuration from wheeled excavators to make it an incredibly versatile digger. The

plantworx preview company will have one of these located on their demonstration area where you can see for yourself the array of time saving features on offer and find out just why this model has found a niche in the 10 tonne range. On the compaction side the Ammann ASC130 roller will stand out due to its size. This 13 tonne single drum roller will be joined by light tandem ARX rollers, including the ever popular ARX26 (120cm drum width) and ARX12 (80 cm drum width). A number of these roller models, including the Ammann Rammax 1575 trench roller have been part of a large deal with Ardent Hire Solutions recently. Three models of Cormidi tracked dumper will complete A&Y’s presence at the show. These incredibly popular dumpers are custom built as tracked dumpers, with features such as rocking rollers and hydrostatic drive making them high performers over all manner of terrains.

“Seeing SANY’s world-class manufacturing process first-hand and working with them in the UK over the past two years has really shown us that SANY is committed to providing quality excavators with outstanding levels of reliability. PlantworX is the perfect platform to show the UK construction industry that SANY is a serious player and are here to stay.” As well as showcasing a range of SANY excavators, including the recently launched mini excavators, TDL will be giving visitors the chance to get behind the controls and move earth on the live demonstration zone. In addition, the latest Tier 4 final 13 tonne SANY SY135C and the 22 tonne SANY SY215C will also be on show, allowing guests to see the latest developments from this exciting manufacturer.

In the end… it‘s only about the right tool! The Dedicated Demolition Line by DEMAREC proves every day that good tools are literally and figuratively speaking more than half the battle. In fact: in the end, the correct piece of equipment determines the success and outcome of each job. Therefore, DEMAREC advises its contacts to focus on the piece of equipment and not on the machine. And... never the other way around! Thus, it is never ever necessary to surrender any capacity and as a result any (business) performance and profits. In other words, an investment in an tool by DEMAREC is much more than a sound investment that is guaranteed to repay itself 100%!

The demo area will be handed over to a Liebherr 914 fitted with the OilQuick system, demonstrating the ease of attachment changeover in just 15 seconds. Avant will showcase its innovative battery-powered, zero emission loader at PlantworX. The new e-series is fully electric batterypowered loader in the same size class as the Avant 500 series, offering zero emissions, extremely low noise and minimal running costs. The battery-powered loader is especially suitable for indoor use where ventilation is limited, meaning the operator and workers are not exposed to the exhaust emissions which create health risks.

A further benefit of a battery driven machine is the extremely low noise level, meaning it can be used in noise restricted areas. The new e-series features two models: Avant e5 and Avant e6. The quick attach system as well as the multi connector for the attachment hydraulics are the same as in other Avant models, so the large attachment range is suitable also to the e-series.

plantworx preview With almost 600 square metres of space including a large digging demo area with a full range of excavators available for test drives Hanix Europe’s stand will be hard to miss at the show. “Following our participation at PlantworX in 2015 we have seen a renewed level of interest in the brand,” says Hanix MD, Paul Clarke. “We are particularly looking forward to presenting our new 8.5-tonne midi-excavator to the public for the first time at PlantworX and, again another first for the UK, we will be demonstrating a fully radio-controlled version of the popular 5.5-tonne H55DR excavator.” The Hanix N085uj, which replaces the muchloved H75C, is the first of a new generation of Hanix ‘urban’ mini- and midi-excavators. A highperformance 2,615cc Kubota V2607 engine provides 43 kW of power for this 8,315 kg machine, and its relatively low capacity promises excellent fuel economy, with emissions in line with EU Stage IIIB regulations. The machine specifications also confirm that this model is available with an option of either short or long

dipper arm – the longer option adds 200 mm to both maximum digging depth and ground level reach; at 4,505 and 7,135 mm respectively. The company’s range of excavators will be joined by a pair of crawler-mounted aerial work platforms; the articulating boom platforms are manufactured in Japan by Hanix Europe’s parent company, Nagano Industry and Hanix plan to introduce these machines to the UK during 2017. Kubota, the manufacturer of compact construction equipment, will be showcasing its brand new mini excavator, the KX042-4 at this year’s show.

has been awarded “Highly Commended” in the Environmental Innovation category of the PlantworX Innovation Awards 2017. The cabbed dumper with OPS+ – OPS stands for operator presence switch – offers additional operator safety. The seat contact switch only allows the machine to start up when the operator is seated. If the operator is standing, the speed is reduced in a controlled manner. The machine will slow down with the aid of the hydrostatic breaking. This ensures maximum safety on the construction site. The option is available for the Wacker Neuson dumpers DW60, DW90 and DW100 with payloads of 6,000, 9,000 and 10,000 kilograms.

The electric wheel loader WL20e has two electric motors, one for the drive system and one for the operating hydraulics, ensure that the performance features of the wheel loader WL20e with a bucket capacity of 0.2 m3 match those of the conventional machine. Contractors who opt for the compact battery-powered wheel loader therefore do not need to compromise in terms of performance, but can benefit from the advantage of zero emissions. This is an aspect that is becoming increasingly important, for example on construction sites in urban areas, and when working indoors, such as in greenhouses, during building restorations or in parking garages. Volvo Construction Equipment will showcase its full range of utility equipment at this year’s PlantworX exhibition. A brand new machine is also to be unveiled at the show – but it’s so new no details were available at the time of going to press. Visitors will have the opportunity to look round the popular EC140E crawler excavator. The Volvo EC140E digger has been designed to deliver every function with superior efficiency and incorporates the latest fuel efficiency technology, to reduce emissions and consumption, while increasing productivity. Operators will also be able to try out Volvo compact excavators in the Volvo Demo area.

ON SITE Look Ma, No Operator Keltbray is using a 3.0 tonne Caterpillar excavator to tackle a top-down partial demolition high above Liverpool Street Station. But there is more to this Cat machine than meets the eye, as Mark Anthony reports. If there has been a single, over-arching trend within the global demolition industry over the past two or three decades, it has been to shift men further and further out of harm’s way. Manual demolition gave way to mechanised processes; demolition poles begat high reach demolition excavators; and machines gained remote controls that allowed operators to stand well away from the machine they’re operating (although, in truth, they rarely do!). That mechanisation revolution and evolution has unquestionably contributed to the demolition industry’s increasingly pristine health and safety record. But while these specialised machines have helped solve a safety challenge, they simultaneously created another problem. Equipment utilisation. This was seen most keenly in the early high reach demolition excavators equipped with supposedly interchangeable booms that would take hours if not days to actually switch. There was a period in the 1990s when no self-respecting yet despairing demolition man’s equipment yard was complete without a high reach boom sat in a cradle collecting cobwebs and depreciating faster than the Greek economy.

Remotely-controlled demolition robots threw up the same utilisation challenge. These advanced and efficient machines do one job very well but they lack a certain versatility. Little wonder that most UK demolition contractors prefer to hire in machines from Brokk, Husqvarna and Avant rather than buying them outright.

Flexible Solution

High reach machines have evolved, however. Thanks to pioneering work by the likes of Kocurek Excavators, high reach booms can be installed and demounted in minutes today, allowing them to switch seamlessly between ultra-high demolition and low level demolition duties. A similar level of innovation might yet provide the solution to the demolition robot challenge. UK demolition giant is currently using a Caterpillar 302.7D mini excavator on a top-down demolition contract high above London’s famous Liverpool Street Station where the former UBS building is being reduced in height before being built back up again even taller than before. And that machine has been converted to allow it to operate via remote control one minute and then with a regular flesh and bone operator perched in the driver’s seat the next.

ON SITE The company installs within the base machine’s wiring harness a bypass that allows the machine to be operated from a distance of up to 200 metres (conditions and obstructions permitting) using a Brokk-esque remote control slung around the operator’s neck. When the remote control work is done, the system is simply unplugged and the machine returns to standard controls requiring an operator within the cab. With the requisite technical wizardry in place, the remote control can be activated in a matter of a few seconds, and can be reverted in roughly the same amount of time.

Switching Over That solution has been developed by Irish technology company Remoquip; and it is a solution that is every bit as innovative and effective as Kocurek’s Modular Joint answer to the high reach boom switch challenge.

That is only part of the trick, as Remoquip’s Francis Dolan explains. “A demolition contractor could quite easily equip multiple machines to allow them to be operated by remote control,” he says. “The remote controller might be used with a three tonne mini excavator in London one day and then used on a 50 tonne machine in Leeds the next.”

ON SITE Such flexibility throws up further advantages. One demolition application with restricted access or weak floors might require a remote controlled machine of 1.5 or two tonnes while another job with room to spare and the right structural integrity might merit an eight tonner with remote controls. Utilising the Remoquip system and some technical jiggery-pokery, both demands could be met by machines already within the demolition contractor’s equipment fleet. “Our system basically provides contractors with a demolition robot on demand,” Dolan continues. “When the need arises, the Remoquip system can be deployed on the most suitably-sized machine according to the task in hand.” Although the electric-powered, low-noise and low-emission characteristics of a demolition robot offer certain advantages, Dolan believes that the Remoquip alternative fitted to a diesel-powered machines offers its own benefits. “Our solution eliminates the need for a three-phase generator to power a dedicated demolition robot,” he continues. “Furthermore, it offers health and safety benefits as it eliminates the need for threephase leads and cables traversing the site.”

Even though there are several manufacturers now offering demolition robots, these innovative machines are almost universally known as “Brokks”, such is the dominance the company has enjoyed in the global demolition marketplace. Such ubiquity is difficult to beat. But in the Remoquip system, the demolition world now has a viable pick-up and put-down alternative. Link Bridge Lifted DSM Group treads gently as bridge linking two buildings – one of them Grade 2 listed - in the heart of Coventry. Mark Anthony reports.

ON SITE Anyone that thinks of demolition as a crash, bang, wallop industry would do well to look at this recent contract carried out by Midlands demolition giant, DSM Group. In addition to using virtually no heavy demolition equipment, the removal of an eyesore link bridge was an exercise in delicacy and restraint.

Local Eyesore

The link bridge joining the Council House and Civic Centre 3 was removed as Coventry City Council prepares to move many of its operations to a new home. The bridge has long been thought of as an eyesore by many Coventrians as it does not match the design of the council house. Coventry City Council sold the civic centre buildings to Coventry University last year as the council is moving to a new office at Friargate. However the Council House will continue to be used for meetings, offices and more besides. The removal of the bridge was described as the ‘next step in the process’ of the handover to the university.

Restoration Begins

The university is due to use the site where the civic centre buildings currently stand as a new headquarters and facilities for postgraduate work and international engagement. With the bridge gone, the council house is set to be restored to how it looked before the link bridge was built back in the 1970s. Prof John Latham, Coventry University vice chancellor, said the chance to develop the site offered the university a unique opportunity.

55

ON SITE “This is a major city centre site, which presents Coventry City Council and Coventry University a oncein-a-generation opportunity not only to allow the university to fulfil its potential, but also to make a significant improvement to the city centre,” he says. “The development of Friargate and the council’s decision to move to it, will allow us to add some key new buildings linking to our current footprint which in turn will allow us to make improvements to the rest of our campus and increase our already extensive integration with business. “Not only will it allow us to create several new key buildings, it will, just as importantly, give us the capacity to free up and then develop some

of our existing sites. We will be able to create a truly world class headquarters which will give the university a real focal point for students, local people and visitors.”

ON SITE Explosive Demolition of Munmorah Power Station Chimney Stacks Liberty Industrial carries out the controlled explosive demolition of the Munmorah Power Station chimney stacks The landmark chimney stacks at the former Munmorah Power Station are no longer standing. The 155m-tall stacks were demolished today using controlled explosive techniques. The demolition was carried out around 9:30am with the structures safely grounded in a matter of seconds. Contracted by Generator Property Management to carry out the demolition of the entire power station, specialist contractor Liberty Industrial used controlled explosive demolition techniques to bring the redundant chimney stacks down. The toppling of the chimney stacks is part of the broader Munmorah Power Station Removal project being carried out by Liberty Industrial and the demolition of the stacks marks a significant milestone in the works. Many months of planning and consultation was undertaken in the lead up to the demolition of the stacks with Liberty Industrial’s project team working closely with SafeWork NSW and a number of government regulatory authorities. The demolition of the stacks was achieved by selectively removing a section at the base of each

stack and then placing explosives to remove the adjacent panels to ensure the stacks fell safely in the intended direction. Liberty Industrial Director Simon Gill said the method of demolition was carefully considered to ensure the safety of the surrounding community and minimise any environmental impacts from the blast. “Our key priority is always safely. The execution was carefully planned to control the direction of felling, and potential impacts such as noise and dust were managed in the most proactive way possible.” “It is very pleasing to see that the detailed engineering and planning undertaken to ensure the safe removal of the chimney stacks has been vindicated” said Stephen Saladine, Managing Director of Generator Property Management. Demolition of the power station will continue and is expected to be completed by September 2018. Two further blast events are planned for 2017 with the explosive demolition of the power station’s boilers.

ADVERTORIAL New Silent Hydraulic Motors Integrated in DYNASET Products DYNASET presents new silent hydraulic motors which are integrated in a vast range of company’s products. The new hydraulic motors will improve the products in many ways.

Improvements

The most noticeable change is the drastically improved sound. For example the HG 12kVA Hydraulic Generator’s sound pressure level dropped from 91 dB (distance 1 meter) to 83 dB (distance 1 meter). This means the sound level is significantly lower. However this is not the only factor that makes the motor sound more pleasing for the ear. The improved sound structure and frequency level are even bigger factors which make the Dynaset equipment almost feel like silent. The high pitch sounds are unpleasant for the human ear and big amplitudes tend to hurt the ears. The new Dynaset silent hydraulic motors are designed to produce

60

sound which structure and frequency are more subtle for the ears. Therefore the motors sound very quiet. The better sound characteristics drastically improve the working environment and user ergonomics. The silent hydraulic motors are designed to be more efficient and durable. The new Dynaset motors have less mechanical friction resulting better efficiency and increasing durability. The operating temperature is lower as well. The new shaft seal is made for higher pressure endurance. The new silent motors are easy to recognize from the all-black motors with Dynaset logo on them.

ON SITE Destructive Partnership DDS Demolition is using three heavy-duty Atlas Copco breakers to destroy reinforced concrete structures during a rebar mill clear-up at Sheerness Steel works on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. The HB2200, HB3600 and HB4200 breakers were supplied by Sandhurst. These immensely powerful breakers weighing two, three and four tonnes respectively were purchased to suit DDS Komatsu’s working on the site: PC290, PC350, PC360, PC450 and a PC490. The Peel Port Wellmarsh demolition and clean-up contract is estimated to be worth up to £3 million and is scheduled for a 52-week project term. Steel was first produced at the Sheerness site in 2003 but production furnaces and a large rolling mill on the 53-acre site had been left untouched since the specialist rebar steelworks was closed in 2012. A decision was finally made to develop parts of the site and demolition work commenced in 2016. DDS Demolition predominantly used hydraulic shears and grabs to remove much of the steel building fabrication and steel-making infrastructure, during phases one and two, each lasting 18 weeks. Phase three, scheduled to take 26 weeks, included the serious challenge of breaking and removing thousands of tons of heavily reinforced concrete machine plinths, push walls and reinforced foundations. DDS decided some

additional high productivity hydraulic breakers were needed to help deliver the project on time. DDS Demolition and Sandhurst are both well-established, each having over 40 years’ industry experience. As longstanding Sandhurst customers, DDS have had great experience of Sandhurst’s rental service used over the years when extra breakers and other attachments are needed. Although Sandhurst operates Europe’s largest Atlas Copco Breaker rental fleet and could have supplied rental breakers, on this occasion DDS thought buying was the right solution. “We faced some very heavy breaking on this job and wanted proven breakers with the capability of efficiently punching into heavily reinforced structures. We’ve hired Atlas Copco breakers and attachments for years from Sandhurst and know we can rely on Sandhurst as an attachment supplier as much as we can for the efficiency and performance of their Atlas Copco breakers,” says DDS Group buyer, Lee Pooley. “We felt buying was the right decision for us this time if we could get the right offer, so we called Peter Dean of Sandhurst who matched Atlas Copco breakers to three of our Komatsu’s and we shook hands on a deal we were really happy with.”

ON SITE McGee’s High Aspirations Work is drawing to a close on a landmark project in the highly sought after Mayfair area of London, that has required both demolition and earthmoving expertise from specialist contractor McGee. McGee is currently forging ahead with works to excavate the basement in preparation for a new in-situ concrete frame that will support a prestigious new residential development.

Unusually, although MacDonald House is not listed, planning required the retention of the original façade. Uniquely at MacDonald House, the client aspired to create taller ceiling heights, requiring the vertical spacings to be changed. The resulting solution was to dismantle the façade brick by brick and stone by stone, rebuilding it so the windows and other architectural features matched the new spacings.

This earthmoving element follows a demanding £7.4 million demolition at the site in Grosvenor Square, the heart of Mayfair, one of London’s most exclusive and affluent locations. Formerly the US Embassy and latterly the Canadian High Commission, MacDonald House, at 1-3 Grosvenor Square, was built in the 1930s. In 2014 Canada sold the building to prominent Indian developer Lodha UK for conversion into luxury apartments.

The taller ceiling heights were not the only reason for dismantling the façade however. It was also incredibly thick, with some of the stones penetrating right through to the inner leaf and causing thermal bridging.

ON SITE Dismantling and reducing the size of large pieces of masonry enabled the façade to be re-built as a nonloadbearing skin supported by a new concrete frame erected behind it. An additional advantage to this was it freedup even more living space inside the building. The building was dismantled from the top down by McGee’s use of a fleet of compact excavators equipped with dipper-mounted “processors” which “munched and crunched” their way through the structure, minimising the amount of breaker use. This was particularly useful as noise, vibration and dust levels were strictly limited. Typically, local planning authorities take ambient readings and set maximum construction noise levels at a fixed volume – usually 10dB - above this. Westminster City Council set a noise limit of 75dB. In addition, the location was on the site boundary of the Italian Embassy therefore even more care was required to avoid risk of damage to the building and to several artefacts inside. While noise and vibration limits were set very low, permitted structural movement was set at zero. “From our perspective that means that the odd millimetre movement is OK as long as it’s not trending in any direction,” explained Nick Taylor, McGee’s head of demolition. “One millimetre’s fine, but if it moves another millimetre the next day and a millimetre the day after that, that’s not acceptable.”

A bespoke steelwork structure was therefore erected to ensure stability of the Italian Embassy building. During the demolition, specialist stonework contractor, PAYE, carefully removed and catalogued each individual brick and stone from the façade for storage (on more than 2,000 pallets) at McGee’s depot in Silvertown, east London. Lodha UK’s Development Manager, Martin Hall said “McGee and PAYE have carried out a complex deconstruction of this historic building and we are excited that work is underway to transform this prestigious London address into a world class development.” Hall says the concrete frame contract has yet to be awarded as “the methodology is still being developed for the reinstatement of the façade.” It is likely the stonemason will reassemble the masonry components in a phased sequence as the new building takes shape. Construction is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2017. The new development, known simply as No. 1 Grosvenor Square, is scheduled for completion by Q4 2019.

Reaching for Higher Standards Looking to raise safety standards in South Korea, demolition firm Sungdo Construction is leading by example, bringing down an unstable, old hospital with its Volvo ultra high-reach excavator. Since Sungdo Construction was founded in 1979, the family run company has become South Korea’s leading demolition firm. The business is known for its work in high-profile demolition projects, such as the clean up of the collapsed Sampoong department store, the dismantling of the Cheonggye elevated highway and most recently, demolishing a 10-storey hospital in Changwon, with the help of a Volvo EC480EHR.

“It is common practice in the Korean construction industry to lift a conventional excavator on to the top of a building and dig down, which increases the possibility of collapse,” Doh explains. “Highreach demolition is safer for operators, as well as anyone else at the project site. And there are some projects where a normal excavator just can’t get the job done – this hospital demolition was one of them.”

Doh Moon-gil, CEO and chairman of Sungdo Construction, chose the ultra high-reach excavator – the first of its kind to be used in the country – to help encourage higher safety standards in Korea’s demolition industry. He acknowledges the construction business was ‘the foundation’ of Korea’s post-war economic development, which propelled the country from one of the world’s poorest in the 1950s to one of the wealthiest today. But, when it comes to safety regulations in the international construction industry, Korea has not yet caught up with global norms.

Offering Sungdo Construction the extra height it needed, the Volvo EC480EHR was customized with a 3.4-meter extension to the standard 28-meter long boom. As the first ultra high-reach excavator in South Korea, Doh believes that not only will it elevate safety standards in the country but it will also open the door to new opportunities for his company. Keeping Doh and his team safe on the job, the ultra high-reach excavator has a steel framemounted Falling Object Guard (FOG) cabin and reinforced windows to protect the operator from

dust suppression system, which is a real benefit considering the hospital worksite is adjacent to the new Samsung Changwon Hospital.

Mun In-hwan, one of Sungdo Construction’s most experienced operators, confidently uses the EC480EHR to bring down mounds of concrete and rebar. Towering way above the four-meter high, aluminum barricades that surround the 18,000m² job site, this is a machine that can’t be missed. Fitted with a three-tonne sheering tool that can slice through metal and cement, Mun says he has never felt safer while on a job than when he’s operating this machine.

Leading the way for the Korean demolition industry, Sungdo Construction has previously devised new demolition methods and founder Doh hopes the use of high-reach machines will become standard practice. Though he realizes that enhancing the quality and safety of demolition in his country will not come easy, he believes his position as chairman of the Construction Policy Committee, which is part of the Korea Specialty Contractors Association, will help him to improve industry standards.

“Doing the work without a high-reach machine would be really dangerous considering how unstable this building is,” Mun says. Over his 14year career as an excavator operator, he has had ‘several close calls with death’. And as a father, he wants to feel confident that he will always be able to return home at the end of the day in the same condition he started. In addition to the safety features of the ultra high-reach excavator, the machine also has a

“Not only did the high-reach excavator improve working conditions, it also increased our work rate,” said Doh. “In seven days we were able to complete what would normally take 10 days. I’m advocating for the implementation of new safety regulations. Once these are adopted, I hope the demand for more high-reach demolition machines, like the Volvo EC480EHR, will also increase.”

ON SITE Flying High at Sellafield James Fisher Nuclear (JFN) alongside partners WYG has taken to the skies to make history with the first external Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) or drone survey undertaken within an active area at Sellafield, which is the part of the site that contains much of Sellafield Ltd’s older production facilities.

The UAV survey of the chimney stack in the Separation Area accurately assessed how the chimney’s cowling, at the very top of the stack, was attached. This will allow Sellafield Ltd, with the support of project management and technical consultancy, WYG, to compile an accurate method statement for its safe removal. After the initial flight of around seven minutes, pilots Tom Shaw and Brad Jackson provided the first set of footage and played it back for the Sellafield team to view. “The inspection could not have gone any better,” says Mike Rogers, field service manager for JFN. “The

ON SITE Dem-Master Takes the Biscuit A weekend demolition spree by Dem-Master has changed the Glasgow skyline forever. Mark Anthony reports. Demolition contracts are sometimes like London buses. You wait ages for one to come along and then two arrive at once. And that was precisely the dilemma facing high reach demolition specialist Dem-Master recently when a pair of overnight contracts arrived in a single weekend.

The company kicked off a manic weekend with the demolition of the former Glasgow College of Food Technology complex on Cathedral Street, one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. This involved the removal of a gable wall in a painstaking process from Saturday night through to Monday morning.

76

ON SITE Dem-Master’s high reach was employed to carry out the task during a window of opportunity afforded by closure of Cathedral Street, allowing formation of landscaped grounds by Rankin Fraser at the entrance to the new City of Glasgow College. Separately, work to bring down the gable end of the former Gray Dunns Biscuit factory on Stanley Street was conducted during a night time operation. This work was spearheaded by a Komatsu PC800 high reach excavator. Once cleared a cash and carry warehouse designed by Sheppard Robson is planned to take its place, employing a ‘barcode’ style façade with architectural mesh on the gables.

78

ADVERTORIAL With these feature packages, the DXR range increases to 17 different variants, providing maximum productivity and gives the flexibility for companies to choose the optimal configuration for them.

The intuitive menu on the remote lets you easily adjust the settings needs to fit the tool that you are using. It doesn’t stop there, Husqvarna are constantly working towards new hydraulic tools to add to their portfolio and expand the robots range of jobs.

Husqvarna DXR – highly capable multi-tool For maximum utility you can choose from a wide range of tools and attachments for DXR’s including: Hydraulic breakers – The SB breakers used on Husqvarna DXR’s have an outstanding power to weight ratio and are a great universal tool for demolition. Different chisels can be used depending on application. Crushers – Husqvarna crushers are lightweight yet powerful and can demolish 400mm walls. Ideal for demolishing concrete and brick constructions, staircases, roofs as well as sensitive locations inside buildings where noise and vibrations are an issue. Steel shearer – With high shearing forces these shears are perfect for confined spaces and areas such as process industries as well as the demolition of structures, piping and process vessels.

Award winning Dust Reduction Kit Dust has been and still is a very topical issue within the construction industry, when you talk about demolition and breaking concrete, dust is inevitable. With the introduction of a dust reduction accessory, Husqvarna further innovates with dust control within its range of demolition accessories. The Dust Reduction accessory is designed for all DXR’s and to be used with SB 152/202/302 Atlas Copco breakers. The accessory supplies water to the tool that is sufficient to bind the airborne dust, contributing to a better working environment and reducing the risk of the operator breathing harmful dust particles whilst demolishing. It also provides a more efficient and economical way of working by eliminating auxiliary equipment or extra persons engaged in binding airborne dust.

Grappler – The MG grapplers have high gripping forces to help increase demolition performance Bucket – The SMP buckets offers high load volume. Drum Cutters – Highly productive tool for trenching, surface removal and profiling in rock concrete and hard soil.

This dust reduction accessory was recently awarded the winner of the Safety Awards at the Plantworx Innovation awards.

“Yes, we can do it” is the common answer to job enquiries when you’re backed up by a DXR. As long as there is a power supply, a DXR will make its way to the workplace – either by climbing the stairs, taking the lift or hanging from a crane hook – and do the job.

Digging It Groundworks Ltd expand their fleet with RK6 and Anaconda

Andover based Digging It Groundworks Ltd recently took delivery of a brand-new Anaconda DF514 Scalping Screen from Red Knight 6 Ltd to add to their extensive hire fleet. Digging It Groundworks Ltd are a well-established hire and construction company based in Andover offering a range of services throughout the South of England. Having had success in the hire and haulage industry providing excavators, dumpers, tele-handlers, tippers and grab lorries to the industry, Digging It added an Anaconda DF514 Scalping Screen to widen their application and customer base.

The MD of Digging It, Ben Boare commented, “Ever since purchasing the RUBBLE MASTER RM70 GO! 2.0 from RK6, we have had great success with a range of customers from the obvious construction and demolition companies needing to recycle their waste on site, to the farmers and small developers and groundworks companies wanting to save money and create a product they could reuse saving them even more money on importing material back in. Shortly after buying the crusher and after some guidance from the guys at RK6, I decided to make the leap and purchase the Anaconda DF514 screener. After a short demonstration, it was easy to see the benefits of having this machine. I am now producing not only Type 1 and 6F5 materials, but able to provide whatever my customers need. I’m now providing screened crush at -6mm for the cement industry and 10mm and 20mm stone for the concrete industry. The high quality and shape of the product is only made possible using the RUBBLE MASTER RM70 GO! 2.0 and the Anaconda DF514 together. It was a big decision for our company but definitely the right one for us. Aaron McVeigh at RK6 was on hand and has already helped in securing hire contracts for both machines, and both are immediately available for short and long term hire.”

KIT TALK Everybody Needs Good Nabors It might seem to many mothers that all 10 year old boys try to wreck their houses, but for Texan Lloyd Nabors he really did – starting a lifelong love of demotion, assisted with his loyal gang of Volvo machines.

It’s fair to say that Lloyd Nabors likes to tear things down. A lot. He was a young boy when he was first inspired to start his own demolition company. His father did demolition work and young Lloyd often helped out, starting around the age of eight. Helping dad was one thing, but what he really wanted was to work on his own. Nabors tells the story: “I said, ‘Dad, I want to run a piece of equipment by myself’. He said, ‘Well, when you’re 10 years old, I’ll let you wreck your first house.’ So he turned me loose. I was running a wheeled loader and I got to wreck my first building when I was 10 years old. And I just loved it.” Many years later, Nabors is the president of Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition, headquartered in Hutchins, Texas, just south of Dallas. Projects

have so far taken him across Texas and into neighboring states, including Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Nabors is still very hands-on with his machines. Nabors says he was committed to the brand of machines he worked on as a boy. He first invested in Volvo construction equipment 12 years ago, after talking with a friend in the excavation business. “He said: ‘You need to try these Volvos, they’re good machines’. He said his savings on fuel were tremendous. So I said, ‘Well, we’ll give it a shot.’ So we bought one.” Now, he commands a fleet of close to 20 Volvo excavators, including a Volvo EC460 high-reach excavator. Dealer sales representative Jarred Walker of Romco equipment recommended the

KIT TALK high-reach machine to meet Nabors’ wide-ranging job requirements. Walker says Nabors was a pioneer. “He was the first contractor in the state of Texas to buy the high reach,” Walker says. The machine’s flexibility was a strong selling point. With a modular joint system, the extended-reach arm can be exchanged for a digging boom as required. They’ve got it down to about a 45-minute process to do that, with one person,” he continues. “That’s a big deal because the old way would take two days to take the long arm off the machine. The versatility is amazing. The machine has paid for itself many times over. It allows them to go do jobs that they weren’t able to do before.”

is six or seven stories tall. It keeps our operator a safe distance away,” Nabors says. “We’re able to reach up and demolish a building, and we can keep away from the structure when it’s falling,”

In addition to the high-reach excavator’s flexibility, Nabors says he appreciates its safety features. “Our long-reach excavator helps us when we have a structure that

The high-reach arm can take a shear or a hammer. This helps operators keep the job under control. “We reach up there and cut the columns. We’re able to pull them down and it’s very professional,” Nabors says. “We used to use a

wrecking ball, and it wasn’t really controllable. You’d just knock a building down, and wherever it fell, it fell. We’re able to control our demo much better now.” VP Satterwhite agrees that safety and professionalism are core concerns. “Texas happens to be a state where you don’t need a license to perform demolition. So you might get a few more cowboys who may have a pick-

up truck and a sledge hammer and they’re gonna go tear down an apartment complex,” Satterwhite says. “Our job is to make buildings come down, and we want to make sure we’re doing it in a safe manner. We want everybody to leave the same way they came that morning.” Citing Volvo CE’s demolition package, which includes safety guards over the cab front, Satterwhite says: “It protects the equipment but, more importantly, it protects the person sitting inside the cab. If a piece of rebar comes flying out, you don’t know if it will go left or right or straight up. Those guards have been phenomenal for us.” The business of knocking down buildings includes many challenges that outsiders may not consider. Nabors uses drone cameras to help analyse each job site. Satterwhite says, complications take many forms. “You don’t know how a building may react all the time, especially if it’s old or burnt or wind damaged from tornadoes. We operate with the understanding that anything can happen.”

Satterwhite describes the open site where Nabors recently imploded an old football stadium. “I enjoy seeing a blank piece of ground when we’re all done and it’s clean and there’s grass growing on it. That’s something we take pride in. Now that’s set up for someone to do something great. We create a place where somebody can build something new,” he concludes.

KIT TALK FORS to be reckoned with Brigade’s white sound reversing alarms (bbstek) reduce noise pollution and now can help operators to meet the new FORS requirements. FORS silver standard already requires operators to fit a reversing alarm: ‘Fleet operators shall ensure that all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight are equipped with an audible means to warn other road users of a vehicles reversing movement’ but the new FORS standard goes one step further. Operators are now required to ‘reduce the noise produced by their vehicles, processes, equipment and ensure that there is regular evaluation of systems and devices that could help to reduce overall noise levels.’ Reversing alarms are one of the biggest reasons for noise complaints especially in residential streets and early in the morning or late at night. Brigade has a solution that can reduce noise pollution without compromising safety and help operators to meet the new FORS requirement. Bbs-tek is a revolutionary reversing alarm that is quieter and yet safer than conventional alarms. The unique alarm is approved by the Noise Abatement Society and has the Quiet Mark accreditation. It can be used to reverse safely without causing a noise nuisance and can only be heard in the danger zone, unlike conventional alarms that can be heard up to thirty times the distance required. The alarm emits a “ssh-ssh” sound which is less irritating than the shrill beep-beep of other alarms.

Brigade’s white sound reversing alarms are considered to be the safest on the market. In a similar way that a person reacts to a snapped twig, the broad band sound frequency is directional and therefore locatable, unlike ‘beeping’ tonal alarms. This means that a person knows which direction they need to move in to be safe. It is ideal for the blind who can actually hear the direction a vehicle is moving in. The hearing impaired are also likely to be able to detect at least some of the wide range of sound frequencies emitted by the revolutionary alarms. Tony Lenihan, complaince manager at Dafcon Haulage Ltd agrees that bbs-tek is the best solution for those that cannot detect sound at certain frequencies. He explained that after twenty five years’ experience working with heavy-duty machinery, he has thirty percent loss of hearing. “I went to the doctors thinking it was a wax build-up in my ear,” Lenihan says. “I was turning the phone up to hear what people were saying and turning the radio up in the car but it turns out that my hearing was damaged.” Brigade conducted a test by blind-folding Tony and asking him to locate the direction of the sound for both the conventional beeping alarm and a bbs-tek alarm. He was positioned ten metres away at a forty five degree angle to the trucks rear offside. With the conventional alarm he was ninety degrees out but with bbs-tek he managed to pin point the direction immediately every time.

KIT TALK Hydrodemolition Goes Compact Aquajet Systems AB, the hydrodemolition machine manufacturer recently acquired by Brokk AB, has introduced the world’s smallest hydrodemolition robot, the Aqua Cutter 410V. The model combines the compact size of the Aqua Cutter 410A and the innovative mast system of the Aqua Cutter 710V, giving it versatility to work in tight spaces with extended reach in horizontal, vertical and overhead applications. The 410V’s design makes it suitable for a wide variety of concrete removal tasks, such as renovation and bridge and road repair. “We provide contractors the ability to work in confined spaces while improving safety and productivity,” says Roger Simonsson, Aquajet Systems managing

director. “The Aqua Cutter 410V accomplishes that and more. This means less risk for contractors, higher ROI and more successful jobsites.” The 1,250 kg Aqua Cutter 410V uses 15,000 to 40,000-psi water jets to efficiently remove as much as 0.25 cubic metres per hour of concrete. Contractors adjust the robot’s stroke to control the depth of cuts, and vary the water pressure depending on whether they are removing loose, deteriorated concrete from the sound concrete below, or sound concrete to a pre-determined depth. The process has the added benefit of cleaning and descaling the rebar, whereas alternative methods, such as pneumatic tools or milling machines, may damage the rebar or produce micro-fracturing in the remaining concrete. Operators can control the 410V from a safe distance using the unit’s radio remote control, either wirelessly or with a hard wire. The remote communicates with the robot’s wheeled power control module. Contractors can remove the module from the tracked portion to reduce the crawler to a third of its original size and create an even more compact robot. This provides the ability to drive the crawler into tight and inhospitable environments, such as small tunnels and flooded sewer pipes, while the module remains connected via a cord. In addition, the 410V easily removes concrete in corners that would be difficult to access with hand tools. Its small size and light footprint allow operators to use the unit in confined areas — including passing through narrow passages, such as doorframes or operating from scaffoldings — while retaining full mobility. Contractors use Aquajet’s unique cutting head and its multi axis 3D positioning system to efficiently operate on all horizontal, vertical and overhead areas. This includes straight up and down work, such as demolishing walls, shafts and furnaces.

KIT TALK Aquajet constructs the 410V’s steel mast in sections — an innovative design that gives the operator freedom to raise the front power head up to 4 metres without additional support. Aqua Cutter robots feature unique ceramic nozzles specifically designed for demanding hydrodemolition applications. The highly-efficient nozzles last 300-350 hours, depending on the water quality. In comparison, standard steel nozzles used on competitive equipment last 20-40 hours. All Aqua Cutter robots feature Aquajet Systems’ patented Equal Distance System. EDS maintains a preset distance from the nozzle to the concrete surface, regardless of the angle of the water jet, allowing for maximum efficiency and productivity. Systems without EDS lose as much as 20 percent of the power before the water hits the concrete, greatly reducing productivity and increasing waste. The hydrodemolition robot features unrivalled ease of access for all maintenance, allowing for minimal downtime. The foldable back cover of the Aqua Cutter robots offers total access for both daily jobs, such as checking oil levels, as well as periodic service jobs, such as oil and filter changes. The unit features electric power and is compatible with Aquajet Systems’ line of accessories, such as rotolances and circular power heads, as well as spines and frames. Contractors can also choose the Aqua Cutter 410V Tunnel Kit, specifically designed for tunneling work. The kit features automatic detection and the ability to adjust the distance to the tunnel surface. This makes it very easy to operate in uneven tunnel shapes or oval tunnels.
