DIGGERS & DOZERS

A Blank Canvas Well that’s that then. 2018 is over and done with. Another year older and deeper in debt. The past 12 months has flashed past in a haze of Brexit BS and Trumpisms. But through it all, the construction industry in general and the construction equipment sector in particular has remained resolute and resilient. The industry will need to repeat that exercise in what threatens to be another challenging year for the UK economy as we begin our self-imposed exile from mainland Europe. Despite this, there is much to look forward to in the blank canvas that is 2019. Regardless of your feelings on its environmental impact, the construction of HS2 will switch into a higher gear this year, raising demand for plant and equipment and the skilled staff required to operate it. For the plant enthusiasts out there, 2019 will be a doublewhammy of good news with the magnificent Bauma exhibition taking place in Munich, Germany and the newlyrelocated PlantworX taking place just a few months later. In addition to providing an opportunity for plant lovers and tyre kickers to get up close and personal with the equipment, both shows are poised to provide a glimpse of the equipment of the future. Although it is rarely a good idea to make predictions in print, I would be very surprised if both Bauma and PlantworX did not have a hybrid equipment and a telematics system feel to them. Both exist already and both have been in use for several years. But the technology in such systems is moving at an amazing pace and I expect to see more developments in this field in the coming year. Here at Diggers and Dozers, we are also planning to harness technology to a greater degree. We have recently upgraded our website to allow us to deliver our industry news faster and in a better-looking format. We have already stepped up our use of video and this will continue into 2019 as we work alongside a number of key manufacturers and dealers to bring you moving images of the hottest plant on the market. And we will be making even greater use of our Instagram feed to bring you top class images and video. With more than 70,000 Instagram followers now, Diggers and Dozers is now among the world leaders on the platform; and we will be aiming to top the 100,000 followers mark before Bauma rolls around. So it just leaves me to wish you all a happy, safe and prosperous New Year from all of us at Diggers and Dozers.

Flexibility is Key !

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The addition of another Volvo L180H loading shovel, a fiftytonne EC480E excavator and an A45G articulated hauler coincides with the commissioning of a brand new crushing plant at the Howley Park facility. “Up until now we’ve engaged contractors to carry out the primary crushing and screening processes here at Howley Park,” says Ian Manley. “With our new plant coming on stream we therefore needed to add these extra machines to fill the gap and consequently settled on Volvos to complement and mirror our existing machines on site. Flexibility is the key to our operations and the ability to interchange attachments on our shovels and excavators when required is crucial,” he continues. “We’ve found our existing Volvo machines to be highly reliable and productive and to be honest, I cannot speak highly enough about them and indeed the service support we get from the dealer.”

5

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Highly abrasive gritstone is quarried at Howley Park, so consequently the new machines have been supplied to deal with the tough characteristics of the material. For instance, the A45G articulated hauler has been fitted with Hardox 500 wear plates in its 25m³ capacity body; the EC480E is equipped with an attachment mounted heavy duty 3.0m³ rock bucket and the 4.8m³ rehandling bucket mounted on the L180H has benefitted from hard facing on the leading edge and side plates. As with the five 30-tonne L180Hs supplied last year, the new loading shovel has had Volvo’s Co-Pilot load-assist option installed at the factory. The Co-Pilot load assist option is the very latest in weigh loading sophistication, allowing the operator to calibrate either his bucket or block handling forks via the touch screen pad in the cab. Bucket loads and the number of buckets filled can be recorded in addition to the system storing a whole array of product menus. The Co-Pilot touch screen automatically becomes a rear view screen when the machine is put into reverse, interacting

with the rear view camera. Furthermore, the Co- Pilot system is linked in with the Care Track system – Volvo’s telematics system which can feed back information to a remote location. The new L180H also benefits from the addition of the CDC (Comfort Drive Control) option allowing the operator to steer the machine from the comfort of his left arm rest. The fifty-tonne excavator has been equipped with double

grouser track pads for quarry operations and supplied with a hydraulic quick fit, heavyduty bucket and hydraulically operated steps for safe access and egress for the operator to and from the cab. The EC480E is installed with a 13-litre Volvo engine developing 378 nett hp and its hydraulic system is perfectly matched to it, both being controlled by an advanced system which provides ondemand flow and reduces power losses within the circuit. Volvo’s unique ECO-mode contributes significantly to the machines’ total improved efficiency without any loss of performance in most operating conditions. The machine supplied to Marshalls also benefits from the straight travel pedal - which is a single pedal in the cab situated to the right of the standard travel pedals - and boom float as optional extras. This latest package of machines comes with a 5-year 10,000-hour full warranty package all covered under a Blue Volvo Service Support agreement meaning they will be serviced at the correct intervals by Volvo trained technicians using genuine Volvo parts.

JCB to the Rescue!

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has added a JCB Teletruk to its range of front line fire fighting and emergency rescue equipment.

The Teletruk is deployed at waste and rural fires where it is used to move bailed and bulky items to support improved firefighting tactics, reduce the risk of fire spread, improve firefighter and public safety and limit the potential for

8

environmental impact during the firefighting process. It will also be used at fire scenes during the clean up and ‘dampening down’ phase of an operation, where there is a need to disturb smouldering debris to allow fire crews to

direct water at deep seated fires to ensure that a blaze is fully extinguished in the fastest possible time. The Teletruk is transported to the scene of an emergency using a transport mechanism specially developed by JCB in partnership with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In simple terms, the Teletruk is driven on to a skid plate and elevated using a clever hydraulic system on to the back of a standard flat-bed trailer. The system is quick, safe and simple and complies with all relevant regulations. “Before we had the Teletruk, in many instances firefighters had to use shovels to move materials to expose the base of the fire when ‘dampening down,” says Staffordshire Fire and Rescue

Service’s Newcastle Station Commander, Mark Walchester. “This process not only put personnel at unnecessary risk, but delayed the time it took to fully put out a blaze and resulted in greater use of water than was often needed.” “Using the Teletruk means we can aggressively attack a deep seated fire and buildings can be made safe far more quickly which is good news for their occupiers – members of the public or businesses – who are able to recover goods earlier than was previously possible.” The 3500 KG capacity Teletruk supplied is a 4-wheel drive model from JCB’s Wastemaster range. It is fitted with puncture-proof tyres and its cab features rollover and falling object protection systems

to ensure that operator safety is maximized when the truck enters a building. The introduction of the Teletruk is also delivering significant cost efficiency benefits to Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In one incident alone the ability to deploy the Teletruk saved an estimated 360 person-hours in the time it took to fully extinguish the fire, which equated to a budget saving of £25,000. “Thanks to its robust build quality, the JCB Teletruk is the ideal choice for a wide range of arduous applications and we are delighted that the invaluable work undertaken by Staffordshire Fire Service is being made easier thanks to Teletruk technology,” says Paul Murray, JCB’s Teletruk general manager.

Another Volvo in the Log Book! Family-run Woodgate Sawmills of Coleford, Gloucestershire, continues a tradition of owning and operating Volvo loading shovels since way back in 1963 with the addition of a new L50H loading shovel. Situated in the Forest of Dean, Woodgate Sawmills has been run as a family business since it was set up in 1953 by Directors, Brian and Ken Humphries’ late father. At that time, the sawmill’s main activity was supplying the NCB with pit props. In those early days, the company operated a Fordson Major and other ex-army 4x4’s but in 1963, Woodgate Sawmills purchased a BM Volvo 620 from the then dealer in Essex. Since then, the sawmill has owned a succession of Volvo loading shovels, upgrading from the old style 621 and 622 models ten years ago with the addition of a new L50E and a second hand L50D. “Ten years ago, it became time to stand our old 621 and 622 loaders down in favour of the latest models in the Volvo range,” says Andrew. “It was quite a big change for us, but both L50s have performed well which is why we’ve come back to purchase the latest version of the machine for the mill.” The L50H benefits from excellent all-round visibility due to the design of the rear chassis and its sloping engine hood. This is facilitated by the transverse mounted Stage-IV final engine and hydrostatic motor. The operator’s environment has been recognised as a key factor in achieving high productivity and the Volvo Care Cab is at the forefront of delivering a high level of operator comfort. All the machine’s controls and functions come easily to hand and air-conditioning is, of course, standard. The engine’s output of 116hp is superbly matched to the hydrostatic transmission, allowing full power-shift under load when changing direction and between

14

speed ranges. The Torque Parallel (TP) loader linkage provides smooth, parallel lift, high rollback torque and good lifting power throughout the lift cycle - and the Volvo hydraulic attachment bracket facilitates the easy change-over of attachments for a range of duties and applications around the mill. The Volvo L50H wheeled loader features separate power steering and load-sensing hydraulic pumps. The advantage of this is that separate pumps ensure full steering power is achieved, regardless of the load on the main hydraulic pumps. Oil flow on the load-sensing pump automatically adjusts to match work demand. The result is lower fuel consumption during lighter work – along with no compromise in performance when operating in tough conditions or demanding applications.

The new L50H replaces the older L50D and takes over as the prime mover around the facility with a range of duties but mainly feeding logs into the mill. It joins the ten-year old L50E which has been relegated to secondary duties but, with relatively low hours

for its age, still has plenty of life left in it. Both machines can interchange implements thanks to them both having compatible hydraulic attachment brackets which include log-grabs, hitip buckets, pallet forks and a bespoke set of hydraulic forks that can rotate 360°.

CAT in 3D! The new Cat GRADE with 3D system for D3K2, D4K2 and D5K2 track-type tractors is an automated grade control system using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology to precisely position the machine’s blade, without operator input, from first rough cut to finish grade. For added utility, GRADE with 3D incorporates the Cat AccuGrade Ready Option, which allows use of universal-total-station and laser references for automated control. The new system assists operators of all skill levels achieve specified grades faster and more accurately, compared with

conventional methods, while also reducing staking costs and saving rework expense, fuel, and machine hours. Cat GRADE with 3D is an optional system, installed at the factory and integrated into the design of the machine. The GNSS antennas

are securely mounted on top of the cab, eliminating the need for mast-mounted antennas on the blade, along with related cables. GNSS receivers and a data radio are also neatly housed in the roof structure. Three inertial measurement units monitor machine orientation,

and position-sensing hydraulic cylinders monitor blade position. The integrated installation eliminates the need to remove components at the end of the day. When in its GNSS mode, GRADE with 3D can provide one-tenth foot-level accuracy by employing real time kinematic positioning technology, which integrates multiple satellite signals with information from an on-site, base-station receiver or other corrections device. The system compares machine location and cutting-edge position relative to an on-board design plan, then automatically positions the blade via an integrated, electrohydraulic valve module. The system also delivers this information to the operator via an in-cab display. The system’s 10-inch, colour, touchscreen display is incorporated into the

dash and provides multiple, configurable views that give the operator a comprehensive view of the site plan and of work in progress. For added convenience, control buttons for activating the system are integrated into the joystick levers. GRADE with 3D, when activated, automatically controls the movement of the machine’s blade, both lift and tilt, to conform to digital jobsite plans. The only input required of the operator is to steer the machine, reducing overall manual input required by an estimated 80 percent. The new system also is optimised to work with other Caterpillar dozing features, such as AutoCarry™, which is designed to assist the operator in attaining optimum blade loads in varying ground conditions, while reducing track slip.

17

GRADE with 3D has the potential to increase productivity by as a much as 50 percent on some projects. As an alternative to the factoryinstalled GRADE with 3D system, machines can be ordered with only the AccuGrade Ready Option (which includes the Cat Slope Assist system, sensors, processor, and wiring harnesses). When appropriate, the Sitech Cat dealer can then scale up this technology by installing the required GRADE with 3D components, including antennas, receivers, data radio, display, and Software Enabled Attachment key (sourced from Sitech). This flexible, scalable approach allows a lower acquisition cost for customers who might want the option of employing levels of grade control technology as needs and budget considerations change.

Aggregate extraction and processing company, Longwater Gravel, has announced the purchase of its first Bell Equipment machine, a B30E ADT which has hit the ground running and already proved its capabilities to the Norfolk-based specialist supplier of high-quality aggregate materials.

Saved by the Bell! With a need to keep three quarries successfully operating throughout the Norfolk area, Longwater Gravel depends on the reliable function of powerful aggregate tipper vehicles with the ability to consistently perform. In the past, the company has met its operation’s vehicular needs by purchasing pre-owned, offhighway dump trucks. However, recently it found the need to acquire a used truck at a crucial

24

DIGGERS & DOZERS

regarding Bell from other industry associates. With his pending need to discover what the market had to offer, he felt the moment was right to put a demo model B30E through its paces: “We ran the two manufacturer’s demo machines side-by-side in the quarry, with the task of carting stone along a half mile haul to our processing plant,” says Littleboy. “The exercise showed the Bell to be unquestionably superior in a number of ways: “The operator comfort and drivability were of notable merit; factors that matter to us, as when our drivers are physically supported at the wheel and find controlling the vehicle an enjoyable experience, they’re more gratified in their role, and consequently feel greater ownership towards the truck. Then, there’s the Bell ADT’s onboard tech, which couldn’t fail to impress. Its weighing systems not only heightened safety onsite, but also helped to encourage efficiencies. And, with the inclusion of floatation tyres, we soon found that we were demoing a vehicle with the reach to not only perform gravel moving duties, but competently fulfil restoration work when a quarry requires skilful refilling; thus, making the Bell B30E a multi-purpose machine.” Will makes reference to the B30E’s option to feature Bridgestone extra wide, low ground pressure tyres that better displace the machine’s force and prevent underfoot conditions from becoming too compacted, so ground drainage is improved within refilled quarry environments: “After considering the many advantages the test model had to offer, we bit the bullet and opted to buy a new B30E for the business, complete with onboard weighing and SafeTip systems, as well as the low ground pressure tyres. time couldn’t be achieved due to lack of machine availability in the busy current market.

“We haven’t looked back since, and have found the machine to be more reliable than anything we’ve used before. It gives improved pull and our operator thinks it’s great; comfortable, quiet and capable, proving itself to be a machine that makes his life easier.”

“The shortage of suitable pre-owned trucks naturally led us to look for a new, but highly appropriate ADT solution,” says Will Littleboy, managing director at Longwater Gravel. “ To find the right machine for the job, we chose to test drive demo versions of both a new machine, manufactured by our usual supplier of pre-owned trucks, alongside, for the first time, a Bell Equipment ADT.”

When asked if he’d contemplate buying with Bell again in the future, Will reveals that he’s already considering his next machine purchase. “Our B30E represents excellent value for money, and the model is proving itself comparable to machines manufactured by high-end competitors in terms of capability,” says Littleboy. “We’re very pleased with our decision and have just ordered another B30E for delivery before the end of the year!”

Will explains that he’d been talking with Bell Equipment about the ADT options open to him for some time, and that he’d heard promising reports

The Industry’s First Mobile App Caterpillar launches the industry’s first mobile app designed to allow customers who spend their time in a truck, at the job site and on-the-go to take advantage of equipment telematics data. The new Cat App delivers simplified, streamlined data directly to mobile devices, helping customers monitor machine location and health, react faster to fault codes and maximise uptime. The culmination of a targeted voice-of-customer program, the new Cat App is optimised for contractors who need to track critical machine operating data from the field.

“App development included 150 customers and dealers from around the world to learn what they considered most important from their telematics data,” says Fred Rio, director of digital and technology for Caterpillar Construction Industries. “The vast majority of the feedback, regardless of brand fell into three customer challenges: tracking machine hours and location, receiving equipment fault codes,

26

and managing maintenance without being tied to the computer back at the office.” This new mobile equipment management tool gives customers an easy way to monitor their entire fleet, request parts and service, and connect with their Cat dealer from the work site. The exact location of all equipment tracked by the app is displayed on the mobile device, along with the machine’s operating hours, health and utilisation data. It enables operations to get the most from their equipment by moving an under-utilised asset to precisely where it is needed most. Customisable push notifications alert Cat App users of machine operating condition, even if they don’t check into the app every day. Upcoming planned service

indicators, based on machine operating hours, are sent to the user, so service can be scheduled for when it doesn’t impact production. Fault codes, such as engine alerts, provide warnings of critical service issues that need to be addressed before a downtime event occurs. The flexible app allows users to establish different thresholds for when an event notification is sent. Designed for machine owners worldwide, Cat App users can choose from 35 different languages. It is available on both iOS and Android operating systems and can be downloaded from Apple iTunes or Google Play store. Once downloaded, the user can log in by using existing credentials to load previously stored Cat machine data. New users can sign up and enter equipment data into the app by clicking “Get Started.”

Providing a fully integrated and streamlined user experience, fleet information can be accessed or updated on the Caterpillar website or from the mobile platform.

Users can quickly self-install Cat PL-542 product link devices to connect equipment without telematics reporting systems to the Cat App.

The Safest Site Dumper A housebuilding contractor campaigning for improved site dumper safety has declared JCB’s new JCB 7T-1 Hi-Viz models the safest on the market – and bought two machines.

Wiltshire-based Tonic Construction is one of the first building firms to take delivery of the revolutionary new JCB models, purchasing two machines from dealer Holt JCB. They are predominantly being used in housing developments in the private residential sector, hauling aggregate and spoil around the developments. Following a fatality on one of its sites in 2016, Tonic Construction’s Chairman Tony Iles has spearheaded a drive among construction industry professionals, manufacturers and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to rid the industry of accidents related to the operation of site dumpers. The JCB 7T-1 Front Tip HiViz model addresses the key safety concerns experienced on construction sites today – visibility, stability and operator protection. By using a low-slung chassis design and revised skip,

the operator benefits from huge improvements in front visibility with an improvement of 77% compared to a conventional six-tonne dumper when laden. By increasing the wheelbase, widening the wheel track and lowering the skip height, stability is improved in all directions including the payload centre of gravity being reduced by 16%. One of the keys to enhanced operator protection is the fitment of the ROPS/FOPS Level II JCB SiTESAFE cab as standard. “The new JCB Hi-Viz model typifies what I have been looking for from a front tipping dumper and ticks so many boxes for me. The design is a credit to JCB,” says Tonic Construction Chairman, Tony Iles. “The introduction of fully operator protected cabs on site dumpers takes safety to new heights, further enhanced by the superior visibility on this JCB model. We see the Hi-Viz as a massive step forward from our current fleet, due to the extra natural visibility enabled by the lower skip height, and better visibility through the front cab screen. Also, when the local risk assessment allows, operators can potentially stay in the cab during operations, and this could help stop hundreds of trips and dumper related incidents each year. “JCB has taken site dumper design to the next level. It keeps the momentum going in the movement to make open-cabbed dumpers a thing of the past in the UK construction industry.”

PlantworX Simulation Zone Simulation technology as a training tool is a proven concept in various professional fields – for example F1 drivers, pilots and astronauts have already benefited from simulationbased training for many years. It’s only recently that immersive technology has seen rapid growth within the construction sector. Advanced simulator development for construction site machinery is being implemented by many leading construction businesses, who are using leading edge technology simulation-based operator training, as a versatile and effective tool to train operators in a safe environment. The plant and machinery sectors are seeing great results with this new technology. PlantworX, the UK’s largest working construction machinery exhibition in 2019, (11th -13th

June at the East of England Arena, Peterborough) will host the UK’s first fully interactive construction Simulation Zone, which will promote virtual interactive training, in a fun and informal environment – which will highlight the very latest technology in construction and how it is changing the way we work. The Simulation Zone at PlantworX will comprise six state-of the-art simulators which will replicate a ‘real working construction site’ – but in a virtual world. Each of the simulators will be linked and will represent an individual construction machine – an

excavator, wheel loader, tower crane, dozer or an articulated dump truck – as examples. Visitors to the zone will be invited to work together on the simulators in the virtual world to complete tasks on a construction site. Spectators will be offered oculus rift headsets to join the virtual world as bystanders and offer encouragement and support to the participants! Participants can expect to experience GPS machine control with the latest attachments. Also, height and slew restrictors and other highly advanced technologies which are being used in today’s construction processes. These simulator training methods have already been adopted by many large contractors – and training of this type was recently completed at Hinkley Point C where Dale Hawkins and his team trained 150 plant operators on Leica GPS and machine control. A number of 80-inch screens and a huge event screen will project live feeds from the simulators and their operators, which will create a major visual and audible impact. All PlantworX visitors will be invited to participate. Immersive training experts, including founder member of UK Plant Operators and a pioneer of simulator training, Dale Hawkins, will be on hand to guide each participant through the virtual world of simulation technology. Companies and contractors who would like to investigate this type of training are also invited to experience what the zone has to offer. No previous experience is necessary!

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The PlantworX team is anticipating that the ‘Simulation Zone’ will be one of the highlights of the show, located in the Indoor Arena. Sponsorship opportunities are available should PlantworX exhibitors wish to be involved. Why use simulator training for operators? Dale Hawkins explains the processes and advantages. Training plant operators is not an easy task – this is due several factors including the transportation costs and logistics of getting a large piece of construction kit to a safe environment to enable the training of a potential plant operator. Then there is the safety aspect of the process – where traditionally a training instructor would be hanging off the side of a moving machine offering instruction to the operator. The safety standards of today would not allow this, therefore the trainee operator is tasked with learning to use the controls in the cab unaided – this could be the most dangerous time of the training program – and could cause untold damage to both man and machine! Also, this method of training only offers a one on one training schedule which elevates the cost and availability of such a course. These new innovations in simulation offer a very costeffective safe classroom based training solution where we are able to bring multiple candidates in to a classroom and teach the basics to these operators so when they do get the chance to sit in the real machine they are already familiar with the controls of the machine making the training a much safer and a more speedy process, thus allowing more candidates to be trained in a shorter time frame and a lower cost.

With simulation digital machine we are able to mount ‘real to life’ machinery attachments with in-cab controls to the simulator, this enables us to also bring large numbers of experienced operators in to a classroom and teach them the more technical side of plant operation – with a special focus on operator aids like GPS machine control, rail specification height and slew restriction and any other highly advanced technologies which are being used in today’s construction processes.

team for the planning process when ordering plant machinery for the site. Another reason we use simulation is there is a national short-fall of machinery operators in the UK, especially with major projects such as Hinkley Point C and HS2 using large numbers of operators. The plant machinery sectors are not pushed in the careers paths of school leavers, most are pushed towards well-known trades such as plumbing and engineering, when in fact there is more work and a very similar rate of pay to become a plant operators, we run a program called ‘On -Track’ where we take simulators into schools and encourage young people to try the machines and offer them information on routes to take if they would like a career path in construction. We also work with some major plant hire companies who offer apprenticeships.

Plant operator profiling and efficiency training – this method can help the operator become more efficient in his/her daily work practices. An operator may have a lot of experience in operating heavy plant machinery, but he/she may not be efficient – which when calculated over a year – could cost the company a considerable T: 01327 261810 amount in M: 07831 123657 fuel and site W: www.baughans.co.uk wastage. “We have bought more than a dozen machines this year, including the ZX48U-5 and ZX33U-5 mini, ZX225USLC-6 and ZX250LC-6 medium, and ZX690LCH-6 large excavators,” says David. “Dublin is buoyant and we have other site development work being carried out in the south of the country. This is a highly competitive market, in which every penny counts and the deadlines are always tight. We have continued to buy Hitachi machines, because the whole range is strong, particularly the large excavators for their durability and reliability.” “Some of our operators prefer Hitachi excavators, because they are smoother to operate and more precise than other brands.

We have also found that Hitachi wheel loaders are trouble-free and have developed well over the years. Hitachi equipment is easy to maintain and we have an excellent working relationship with our dealer TBF Thompson; a sub-dealer of Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK).” Shannon Valley provides an array of solutions, ranging from demolition and road construction, to bulk excavation and drainage. As well as construction-related activities, there are also plant hire, haulage and quarrying services available within the Shannon Valley Group. Among the 40 job sites currently in operation around Dublin are: the development of 148

HG Thomas Plant Hire’s Cornish Cream HG Thomas Plant Hire was founded in 1988 by Harold Thomas, based in Helston, Cornwall, over the years Harold has built up a reputation for being the first in line to purchase new to market machines especially kit that he feels will offer him an economical and competitive edge over rival companies - in the often-cut throat business of plant hire and civil engineering. It’s probably fair to say that Harold is a proper old school plant man and prefers his kit to be as simple to run and maintain as possible. The latest machine which tempted Harold was the Hyundai HX130LCR, which he

purchased from Hyundai dealer Molson. The machine was delivered to HG Thomas in full livery straight from the Cornish show earlier this year. This machine was the 1st of the mark in the South of England. “I liked the look of this machine as a replacement for one of our outgoing 13-tonne machines mainly due to its simplicity and the fact that it is powered by an engine that does not require the AdBlue which can be a bit of a hassle on sites,” says Thomas. “In addition, this machine spends much of its time on hire to a big groundworks firm in the housebuilding sector, so its compact dimensions will be well

received as the sites get more and more congested, it’s a great addition to the fleet.” Harold is no stranger to the Hyundai brand having already purchased an 18-tonne class R 180LC-9A, so he is familiar with the brand and has nothing but praise for the dealer, Molson. The HX130LCR has replaced the outgoing R 125LCR-9A in the line-up. This model tips the scales at 12,930 kgs but the machine can also be specified with a dozer blade (HX130LCRD) which pushes the operating weight up to 13,560 kgs. Operator Danny Hoskins has worked for HG. Thomas for around five-years and has been driving machines all his working life. “It’s always great to have a new machine and the cab is very nice and comfortable with everything in there that you could ever need. The machine is certainly very useful in tight situations around the houses and it really is incredible as to where you can get in,” says Hoskins. “We are extremely pleased with the performance of the HX130LCR – it’s an excellent replacement for our old 13 tonne machine – we made the right decision choosing the Hyundai,” says Thomas.

More Volvo’s For Ashcourt The Hull-based Ashcourt Group has continued to add more Volvo machines for its aggregates, civils and recycling divisions during 2018 supplied by SMT GB. Featured at this year’s Hillhead exhibition was a 34-tonne L260H loading shovel destined for Ashcourt Group’s Partridge Hall Quarry, near Pocklington, North Yorkshire. The machine, with its unique Union flag proudly displayed on the engine hood in reflective micro-prismatic vinyl

panels, takes over as the quarry’s prime mover as production output is ramped up. “Moving from the smaller L150H to the L260H brings many benefits to our production here at Partridge Hall,” says Quarry Manager, Damian Towse. “With

44

its 7m³ rehandling bucket, we can now load eight-wheeled tippers in just two passes and articulated trailers in three, which means the machine is able to dispatch vehicles far quicker and therefore free up more time for rehandling material around the quarry. We’ve also seen gains on

DIGGERS & DOZERS

the overall fuel consumption per tonne moved. Furthermore, we can now manage our activities in the quarry without the need for a dumptruck which, again, has provided us with a significant improvement on all round productivity and cost saving.” The L260H features a 13-litre stage-IV final engine developing 420hp in a relatively low rpm range of between 1,100 and 1,200 rpm. The machine also benefits from Volvo designed and manufactured driveline components including Optishift with torque converter lock-up and reverse-by-braking feature – all designed to offer considerable fuel savings each shift. Fuel savings are further enhanced by the Volvo Eco-pedal encouraging

the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve. Specifically for Ashcourt, the new L260H has been equipped with a large capacity 7m³ rehandling bucket with a straight edge enabling the machine to easily handle ten tonnes of crushed chalk every pass. The machine also benefits from an enhanced full turn tipping load of 24 tonnes, thanks to the addition of Goodyear 29.5R25 GP4D tyres and other features on the new L260H include CDC (Comfort Drive Control), Volvo’s optional ride control or boom suspension system, an automatic lubrication system and an RDS Alpha 100 weigh loader. Safety features including all round visibility

aids such as sensor vision, blue strobes, white noise alarm and additional LED working lights that are also included in the machine’s specification. Two new excavators have been added to Ashcourt’s fleet for its civils and bulk earthmoving division and come in the guise of a forty-tonne EC380E and the larger fifty-tonne EC480E in standard heavy-duty backacter configuration. Both machines are powered by a Volvo StageIV compliant 13-litre engine developing 311 and 385 net horsepower respectively, offering the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large, roomy interior with plenty of legroom and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurised and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate control system. An adjustable, easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings besides providing visibility to the operator from the rear and side-view cameras. Since acquiring a large recycling facility located at Foster Street in Hull three years ago, Ashcourt Group has made significant investments at the premises including a new, state-of-theart, concrete batching plant. This has allowed the company to greatly expand the area set aside for recycling a diverse range of materials including inert building waste, aggregates and waste wood which is processed and recycled for biomass. In order to process and re-handle this material through the plant, Ashcourt has added a Volvo EW240E MHE (materials handler) specifically rigged for the task in hand, with a hydraulically

45

DIGGERS & DOZERS

elevating operator’s compartment to aid the safe loading of high-sided bulkers. The new arrival joins an EC220E similarly rigged that was supplied two years ago. Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 171 nett hp, the EW240E has been supplied with a 6.5m straight boom and 4m sorting arm with a Kinshoffer selector grab for the business-end of the machine. Thus rigged, the EW240E material handler provides a maximum forward reach of 10 metres and a maximum height of 12 metres measured at the attachment pin. With an optimum 800L capacity grab the machine has a generous 3.7 tonnes

lifting capacity at maximum reach across carriage with its outriggers down. To facilitate grab rotation, the machine is equipped with x3 hydraulics along with x1 hammer/shear hydraulics and hose rupture valves fitted as standard. Uniquely, the EW240E supplied to Ashcourt is the first in the UK to feature CDC control (Comfort Drive Control) which has eliminated the need for a steering wheel (and thus the steering column). By taking this option, the operator’s forward field of vision is dramatically improved for loading material into high sided bulkers when the cab is elevated to its full height.

Michael Henry Chooses Volvo Ickenham based plant hire and civil engineering contractor has opted for a new Volvo EC220E to coincide with a move to raise its profile in the Greater London plant hire market and expand its client portfolio.

Michael Henry Civil Engineering is no stranger to owning and operating Volvo branded equipment, already running an EC220D in its mixed fleet of equipment. “We were in the market to add another twenty-tonne machine to the fleet and our decision to purchase the new Volvo coincided with an EC220E available together with an attractive package,” says Managing Director Michael Henry. “The Volvo excavator has a good reputation for reliability and performance along with a good residual value so we had no problem in opting for the new EC220E” Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine, developing 174

nett hp, the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurised and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate-control system. An adjustable, easy-t- read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions. The new EC220E is supported by a Volvo Blue service agreement and has been supplied in standard specification which includes hose rupture valves to both boom and dipper cylinders, quick-fit hydraulics and hammer / shear hydraulic lines. The combination of the 5.7m boom and 2.9m dipper arm affords the machine a maximum digging reach of 9.93 metres and a dig depth of 6.73 metres. The practical dumping height is a generous 6.55 metres and the machine’s maximum lifting capacity across carriage at full reach, is an impressive 2.8 tonnes. The machine also sports full ‘boxing ring’ style guarding around the superstructure.

‘Global Expertise, local know-how’ in action (Hillhead, June 26-28th 2018) Hillhead always puts on a fantastic show and this year was no exception – 2018 will be remembered as being a bit special, namely due to a spell of hot weather that made the venue feel more like the Sahara than an East Midlands quarry. It was also a bit special for Kinshofer UK. The crane and excavator attachment experts based in Stockport, have enjoyed a successful year across the board and their presence at Hillhead went a good way to reflect this – showcasing a wide range of quarrying, recycling, rehandling, demolition and construction attachments. Andy Little, Kinshofer UK Excavator Attachments National Sales Manager, looks back at the some of the highlights from one of the busiest shows of its kind in the UK.

What was the strategy for Kinshofer at Hillhead this year? Fundamentally, we set out to showcase Kinshofer’s global strength and expertise. It’s

something we feel sets us apart in the marketplace and we really wanted to bring it to Hillhead for the benefit of our UK customers and local dealer network. Our regular UK sales team was joined by a significant number of global contributors, to offer expert advice and insight. Our global CEO was present along with product managers from all the major teams based in Germany, as well as leading representatives from our partners in Holland, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia. Allied to this was a strong showing from our national dealer network to add further local knowledge for the benefit of our customers MTK, Mutleys, Dunrave, Yarwoods, Fitzgeralds, Hodge Plant among those represented.

rail ready was the culmination of a lot of time and effort from all parties concerned in the approvals process, and this firmly demonstrates the productivity gains that innovative technology can bring to the rail sector.

What products took centre stage? Undoubtedly, the transverse drum cutter set-up with NOX Tiltrotator and OilQuick hydraulic quick change was a real focus not just because of its relevance in terms of application but also because of its sheer flexibility and multi-tasking potential. We did see a large amount of interest in it, as the ability to pick up and drop off attachments from the cab is a massive time saver for any operator, and the NOX added to the flexibility story nicely through its cylinderless capability. Our traditional demolition range from Demarec proved popular as always, this year complimented by the smaller DMS Multi-Shears with exchangeable jaw sets. Among other products, we featured a selection of the twin

D-Lock quick couplers and tilt couplers, the largest HPXdrive clamshell bucket, the C40HPX, suitable for 40t excavators, and the FlipScreen screening and recycling bucket generated a lot of interest too, as it’s a simple idea beautifully executed all displaying the breadth and expertise Kinshofer bring to the UK market. And what were the main messages? As a business, our main aim is to consistently develop innovative product ranges that build a reputation for quality, reliability and safety – with a customercentric approach that focuses on after-sales support. The NOX gaining Product Acceptance status from Network Rail was an important development for the show this year. Becoming

You also had a demo machine present, how did this fit in? Yes, courtesy of Dunrave Plant Services, we ran a 9-tonne Wacker Neuson ET90 at the Registration Demonstration Area, which demonstrated a TR10 cylinderless NOX-Tiltrotator and an assortment of hitches, buckets and other attachments. Steady crowds were a consistent feature of the three days, despite the heat up at the top. They were able to see our ‘Slim As The Dipper’ routine – a neat little demo that simulated a narrow trench – which showcased the NOX’s slim profile and ability to work unimpeded in confined areas due to its lack of cylinders. How did 2018 compare to previous years? Having attended the last eleven shows at Hillhead, I can safely say this was one of the best, if not the best, show I can remember at the quarry. Bigger investment, better organisation, record audience numbers, better customer feedback. And weather like no other! Was the show successful for you as a business? Having a strong product story certainly helped generate interest, pre-show discussion, on-stand attendance and ultimately helped to drive sales. Relationships were strengthened with existing customers as they always are, and plenty of new relationships were formed this year also. Any personal highlights? Hillhead number twelve was all about sun cream, ice cream and some selling in-between!
