DIGGERS & DOZERS

Guess Who's Back... As some of you may recall, we launched a Diggers and Dozers magazine a few years ago to complement our fast-growing YouTube channel dedicated to the hottest new construction equipment.

EDITORIAL Mark Anthony - Mark Anthony Publicity markanthony@markanthonypublicity.co.uk 07973 456 166

Well, like so many famous artists of the past, we were ahead of our time. While we attracted a global audience of readers that appreciated our heady mix of words, photos and film, advertisers were rather harder to please. And after four issues, the magazine was closed and the idea shelved. But, like the prodigal son, we’re back. Much has changed in the two years since the magazine went away. Online video – once considered new-fangled and expensive – is now a part of every self-respecting plant manufacturer’s marketing armoury. Advertisers are seeking ways to monitor the return on their investment; and YouTube and Google analytics and online magazine click-throughs allow them to do just that. And we now have the backing of a publishing partner that has recognised the potential that lies within the Diggers and Dozers brand. And, as you will see over the coming pages, the advertisers have shown their support for an as-yet-unproven magazine. We apologise for our temporary and enforced absence and sincerely hope that you agree that our two-year hiatus was worthwhile. And, of course, we hope that you will let us have your comments, opinion and feedback; that is the ONLY way the magazine will improve and grow. So, without further ado, take a look at the allnew Diggers and Dozers. It’s great to be back. Mark Anthony Editor

Raising the Bar

DIGGERS & DOZERS

UK construction equipment giant JCB recently hosted its latest International Press Event to show off a plethora of new, improved and leftfield additions to its extensive range. Diggers and Dozers’ Mark Anthony was there.

For almost 30 years, I have made an annual pilgrimage to the JCB World Headquarters for one of the company’s international press events. Like the product range and the factory itself, these events have grown and grown to become one of the highlights of the plant writer’s annual calendar. This latest event was no exception with new and improved machines and components and a few out of left field developments for us plant scribes to enthuse over and for plant buyers to add to their shopping lists. And while last year’s launch of the much-vaunted Hydradig was always going to be a tough act to follow, JCB certainly had a few surprises up its sleeve, including a first proper foray into the powered access arena. While the first machines – a range of nine electric scissor lifts – are just a bit “industrial” for the pages of Diggers and Dozers, they mark just a starting point for a diversification that will see the launch of several new construction-focused booms at ConExpo in just a few weeks’ time. In the coming pages, we will bring you the highlights of the press event.

Best of Both Worlds

JCB has developed the world’s first dual technology transmission designed specifically for its Loadall telescopic handlers, combining the best characteristics of powershift and hydrostatic drives. The Industrial DualTech VT variable transmission has been developed by JCB’s own engineering team and is at the heart of two premiumspecification, high-performance Industrial DualTech VT telescopic handlers. The JCB 531-70 Industrial DualTech VT, 535-95 Industrial DualTech VT and 541-70 Industrial DualTech VT Loadalls have an advanced powertrain that brings together the proven power, torque and economy

preferences. The direct drive powershift element of the transmission gives these handlers the best climbing and towing ability. It all adds up to significant gains across the board. The impact on productivity, especially for repeat loading cycles, is exceptional: up 13% over JCB’s current class-leading telehandler handlers and up to 25% over equivalent competitor machines.

“Industrial DualTech VT truly provides the best of both worlds, combining the low-speed controllability and easy driving characteristics of hydrostatics with the higher speed efficiency of direct drive powershift. The result is a machine that is up to a massive 25% more productive than competitive models,” says JCB chief engineering and innovation officer, Tim Burnhope. “Drawing on our expertise in both hydrostatic and powershift transmissions, Industrial DualTech VT is a massive achievement for our design and engineering team, who have raised driveline technology to new heights”.

The innovative Industrial DualTech VT transmission is being launched in three industrial Loadall telescopic handler models with lift capacities of 3.1 tonnes, 3.5 tonnes and 4.1 tonnes. The 531-70, 535-95 and 541-70 Industrial DualTech VT handlers are premium-specification machines designed for customers wanting the ultimate telehandler in terms of productivity, performance, efficiency and ease of use.

The Loadall Industrial DualTech VT machines have exceptionally precise low-speed manoeuvring control and smooth, progressive response for loading and handling cycles, which the operator can adjust and fine tune to suit different applications and his personal

New Heights

JCB has expanded its telescopic handler range with the addition of the new 540-180 HiViz. According to the company, the 540-

6

DIGGERS & DOZERS

180 offers greater performance and lifting capability than its 17 metre stablemate the 540170 – despite being 20 percent smaller in overall dimensions. Its launch brings to 30 the number of Loadall models in the range. The 540-180 HiViz has been specifically built to meet the needs of rental companies and contractors, offering reduced cost of ownership, faster cycle times and best in class visibility, with improved lift height and increased forward reach. At just 2.35 metres wide and 6.26 metres long it is possible to move two machines on a single curtain sided truck or low loader, reducing transport costs. The 540-180 Loadall has a lift height of 17.5 metres and a maximum forward reach of

13.5 metres. At just 11,330kg however the new model is seven percent lighter than its stablemate, thanks to a strengthened four-stage, chaindriven boom and improved chassis construction. The synchronised boom design provides smooth and

precise boom movements with faster extensions and retraction, to improve overall cycle times. A regenerative Smart Hydraulic system on the optional single lever control uses gravitational force to aid lower and retract functions, also reduces energy required during operation. The chain driven boom, which uses an innovative chain adjustment system for reduced maintenance, also allows for a reduced hydraulic pump capacity with no loss of productivity. Indeed the 540-180 delivers 12 percent greater efficiency when placing a load, offering speed without compromising performance or safety. The telehandler is also equipped with ground-level tie-down points for easier transportation. The 540-180 is powered by JCB’s proven SmartPower Tier 4 Final EcoMAX diesel engine, delivering 55 kW

with no requirement for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) additive, reducing operating costs for the customer. This drives through a four-speed JCB Powershift transmission with a maximum travel speed of 29 km/hour.

The JCB Proximity Braking System (PBS) which has been developed in collaboration with FCC Environment (UK) - automatically sounds an alarm in the cab and applies the vehicle’s brakes if a person enters a preset exclusion zone around the machine. In addition the system automatically puts the vehicle into neutral and applies the parking brake.

The machine benefits from an incredibly low boom pivot point, delivering a 20 percent improvement in visibility over the boom. The multi-lever command control hydraulic system is common with the popular 540140, delivering precise load placement and controllability. The optional single-lever electric servo control is light and easy to operate, with minimal arm movement for reduced operator effort. The machine comes with a hydraulic pressure release button in the cab, to vent the hydraulic service and make it easier to change attachments.

In harmony with this, the at-risk pedestrian is also warned of the danger of a moving machine through a vibrating transponder attached to their safety helmet. The new PBS system is being launched as an option on the 19-tonne JCB 457, with plans to roll out the feature to the rest of JCB’s wheeled loader range.

JCB PBS uses triple antennas mounted on the wheeled loader, which generate a detection zone around the machine. Operatives on site are equipped with a vibrating transponder, usually attached to a safety helmet. If the person enters the safety ‘bubble’ around the machine, the transponder will vibrate to warn the operative that they’ve entered a danger zone. At the same time, the transponder also communicates with the machine, triggering an audible alarm in the cab and alerting the operator to the potential collision, whilst automatically applying the machine’s braking system, bringing the loader to a halt. This potential collision is then recorded on the machine’s MCU, with date and time information, so that further investigation can be carried out as to why the individual entered the machine’s danger zone. This can be used to highlight further safety improvements that can be carried out on site.

projects. Installation of the system requires a site visit and assessment, to understand the site operation, check on walkways, traffic routes and other site-specific variables that can affect the operation of the system.

Three is the Magic Number

Production is set to get underway of a brandnew fuel-efficient JCB engine following a £31 million investment programme. JCB announced in 2011 that it was launching a new engine development project with the help of £4.5 million from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund. Now, the company has unveiled the results of that investment for the first time – a brand new three litre engine.

The JCB Proximity Braking System can be fitted to multiple machines on a single site. It is particularly suited to heavily trafficked working areas, such as waste and recycling

10

DIGGERS & DOZERS

It is the third engine line to be launched by JCB since production first started in 2004 at JCB Power Systems in Derbyshire and joins the 4.4, 4.8 and 7.2 litre models. The totally new 3.0 litre fuel-efficient JCB430 DieselMax engine is also 30% lighter than JCB’s popular 4.4 litre EcoMax engine and has been designed specifically for mid-range construction and industrial equipment operating cycles. JCB’s third engine line, alongside the four cylinder 4.4/4.8 litre EcoMax and the sixcylinder 7.2 litre DieselMax, is a four-cylinder design with a displacement of 3.0 litres. Designed for maximum durability, the heavyduty engine features a cast iron bedplate structure and a rear mounted geartrain, for long service life and low operating noise. Launched initially with 55 kW, at Stage IIIB/ Tier 4 Final, the 3.0 litre engine produces an impressive 400Nm of torque from just 1,300 rpm. The engine meets the relevant emissions

legislation without any requirement for a costly Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or any form of exhaust additive or aftertreatment. This will make it an ideal powerplant for a wide range of mid-weight construction and industrial equipment. The engine has been designed to be ready for Stage V emissions standards and it will be available with additional power ratings in the future. JCB Power Systems has opted to use automatic valve adjustors for the first time on the engine. This means that there is no requirement for any form of regular valvetrain adjustment, reducing downtime for customers and boosting productivity. The 3.0 litre unit also features integrated glow plugs, for faster cold starting. The engine’s Mass Air Flow meter system, which allows the ECU to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine regardless of temperature, altitude and air density, has been integrated into the engine itself, minimising the amount of air inlet system development

and engine set-up work required for different machine configurations. Mounting interfaces are shared with those of the larger 4.4 and 4.8 litre engines, making installation in existing equipment easier. The engine also retains the HD PTO capabilities of it the larger JCB engines.

Lift and Load

The JCB TM320 combines the central driving position and all-round visibility of a wheeled loading shovel with the reach and lift versatility of a telescopic handler. The TM320 – which sits alongside the existing TM320 Wastemaster - has a maximum 3,200 kg lift capacity, which is available to a full lift height of 5.2 metres as well as from ground level. It delivers a maximum 1,750 kg of lift capacity at full forward reach of 2.95 metres ahead of the front wheels. This combination of lift and reach performance makes the TM320 highly versatile, ideal for general lift and place applications on a construction site, or for re-handling in a concrete batching plant or smaller quarry operation. The TM320 is powered by a 4.4-litre version of the awardwinning JCB EcoMAX engine, developing 93 kW. The EcoMAX engine meets EU Stage IV / US Tier 4 Final emissions compliance using JCB’s highlyefficient selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. There is no requirement for a costly

diesel particulate filter (DPF) to compromise the engine installation and potentially add to machine servicing costs.

A prompt on the machine display ensures that the operator has checked the attachment security, with a press of the dial required to confirm this. The smaller of the two new hitches is designed for use with the JS130, JS131, JZ140, JS145 and the JS145W. The larger model is for use with the JS200, JS210 and JS220 models. Both hitches are available as line fit items, or can be ordered through a JCB dealer as an aftermarket offering.

Access All Areas

JCB has signalled its intention to become a major player in the $8 billion powered access market by entering the sector for the first time with the launch of a brand new range.

JCB will introduce four articulated booms in 2017, with platform heights of 14.9 metres through to 24.6 metres. All four models will be offered with four wheel drive and twowheel steer, delivering up to 40 percent gradeability and a maximum stowed driving speed of up to seven km/hour. These will be joined by a 13.7 metre platform height AJ45E electric powered articulating boom model in quarter three. The electric model has two wheel drive and two wheel steering, with up to 30 percent gradeability.

By the end of 2017 the newly-launched JCB Access business will be offering a total of 27 new platforms, including scissors, articulated booms and telescopic boom machines. The exciting new move is geared to grab a slice of a market where 130,000 units a year are sold – generating an annual revenue of $8 billion. The scissor lifts weigh between 1,330 and 3,366 kg. The two smallest models (S1530e & S1930e) have platforms measuring 1.64 metres long by 0.76 metres wide, while all larger models use a 2.5 metre long platform, apart from the largest S4550E model which has a 2.64 metre long working area. The machines are rated for basket capacity from 227 kg to a maximum of 550 kg.

The AJ50D diesel articulating boom is powered by a JCB Diesel by Kohler engine, while the other three articulated models and all telescopic models use the JCB by Kohler engine already proven in many of JCB’s compact machines. These engines all meet Tier 4 Final emission standards, making them suitable for the North American and European markets. Load capacities range from 227-250 kg, again enough for two occupants and tools.

The electric scissors are powered by four 6V or 12V batteries, with hydraulic drive. Three diesel models will be introduced later in 2017.

A range of 10 diesel-powered telescopic booms will also be added throughout 2017.

These will offer platform heights from 20.6 to 45.6 metres. There will be a high degree of parts commonality between the three model ranges.

monitor. This will provide operators with graduated warnings of reducing DEF levels to prevent automatic downrating if the DEF tank is not replenished.

The new JCB Access products - designed inhouse to meet the needs of rental companies and contractors worldwide - will initially be offered in the UK, France, Germany and North America.

By upgrading to the MTU engine, JCB has been able to reduce the number of fuel filters required from three to two, reducing operating costs for customers. A fuel shut-off tap has also been fitted to make service work easier.

The JCBs Access range has been certified by TUV ensuring the highest product quality standard. It will also comply with the latest ANSI & CSA legislation.

The air cleaner has also been upgraded, with the JS machines moving to a new power core unit. This air cleaner uses an ultra-web nano fibre technology that delivers increased dust holding capability. The unit is three times more efficient than a pleated filter, yet offers increased airflow. It is stronger and more durable and, with the option of a scavenger pre-cleaner, there is no requirement for a vacuator valve.

Powering Up

JCB is boosting the fuel efficiency, productivity and performance of its heavier crawler excavators with the installation of Tier 4 Final diesel engines. The six-cylinder MTU 6R1000 already proven in JCB’s largest wheeled loader - will be used in the JS300, JS330 and JS370.

Access to the engine has been improved, with the adoption of a single-piece canopy. The steps have been redesigned with an extended lower step as part of a two-tier toolbox. The bottom tier provides access to the standard refuelling pump, while the upper section contains the DEF/AdBlue filler. Tread plates have been installed on the steps and the upper structure, plus the machines now benefit from a standard riser handrail, side handrail and kickplates for added safety. Optional full surround ‘boxing ring’ handrails are available if preferred.

The 7.7-litre MTU diesel engine is a highly efficient turbocharged and intercooled powerplant delivering 180 kW in the JS300 and 210 kW for the JS330 and JS370 models. The machines incorporate Selective Catalytic Reduction within the exhaust system, with dosing of a Urea-based Diesel Exhaust Fluid to reduce NOx emissions by almost 90 percent. This system allows the engine to meet Tier 4 Final without having to use a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), reducing cost and service complexity for the customer. Their introduction means fuel savings for customers of up to 10 percent on the JS370 and five percent on the JS300 and JS330.

JCB’s Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), which is standard on the heavy-duty XD demolition specification machines, can now be ordered as an option on all models. This integral box section design provides an additional barrier to protect all core components of the machine. A wide range of options is available for the larger JS models, including seatbelt in use green beacons.

The excavators are equipped with a 47-litre DEF tank and the fluid is used at a rate of around 3% compared to fuel consumption. This means that operators will need to top up the DEF tank, which is located within the top toolbox, with every third tank of diesel. The excavators will feature a warning system incorporated within the JS excavators’ main

Customers can also specify a Plus Pack for the three excavators. This includes a deluxe

16

DIGGERS & DOZERS

operator seat, a radio, footrests and T-bar tracking levers in the cab. Externally the Plus Pack incorporates a black revolving frame, a rain guard, six LED worklights, the scavenge pre-cleaner and Plus decals on the door.

JCB’s Hydradig wheeled tool carrier is taking on the latest Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV compliant JCB EcoMAX diesel engine, equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). This highly efficient engine, which delivers a powerful 81 kW, uses a Ureabased Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) additive that is injected into the exhaust system to reduce potentially harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOx) by 88 percent.

Go with the Flow

JCB is to make a high-flow auxiliary hydraulic circuit available for the 3CX Compact backhoe loader - delivering up to 120 litres/min of flow to power a range of loader-mounted attachments.

Improved efficiency within the engine results in fuel savings of up to four percent, despite producing the same power and torque as the previous machine, cutting operating costs for customers. The machine is equipped with a 19-litre DEF tank and with a minimal two percent DEF use this will only require a refill with every sixth tank of diesel, minimising downtime. The Hydradig was designed from the outset to accommodate the Tier 4 Final EcoMax engine, the revised exhaust system the DEF tank and dosing equipment, so there is no change to component packaging or the excellent service access on offer. There is also no requirement for either DEF tank coolers or heaters within this system.

The 3CX Compact will be available with a high-flow front-end auxiliary hydraulic circuit capable of delivering up to120 litres/ min at an operating pressure of 200 bar. This, in combination with the option of a skid steer loader mounting hitch, will allow contractors to operate a wider range of highflow attachments, such as patch planers and trenchers, on the front of the 3CX Compact, further boosting the versatility of this highly capable machine. The high-flow circuit will be available with a multi-function, electronic front loader control lever, with integral proportional rocker switches and activation buttons. This will provide increased control of front-mounted attachments, boosting productivity and performance.

Piling on the Pressure

With an operating weight of less than 12 tonnes, the JCB Pilingmaster has been developed in cooperation with ground engineering contractors across the UK that offers excellent flexibility and manoeuvrability.

The 3CX Compact will be available with an optional Powerslide mounting for the backhoe. This allows the operator to slide the backhoe kingpost smoothly from one side of the machine to the other, without the risk of damage to the ground by pushing the boom across with the bucket. Additional safety options will include a second, lower cab entry step to provide easier access for operators that move in and out of the cab frequently.

Unlike a conventional rig, the Pilingmaster also benefits from a front loader, with joystick control, that can be used to remove unwanted material and to clean up the site after piling. This can remove the need for a second machine on site, cutting cost for the contractor.

Shed a Tier

The revolutionary Hydradig still qualifies as a new-born but already JCB is upgrading the wheeled tool carrier with the installation of a Tier 4 Final JCB EcoMAX diesel engine.

Unveiled in concept form two years ago, JCB has worked in partnership with piling and ground engineering contractors across the UK, to develop and improve the initial

17

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Pilingmaster design. This has included upgrading the Kelly-bar, strengthening the piling frame and increasing motor and winch performance.

The JCB Pilingmaster delivers up to 1.25 tonnes of head torque, working with piling diameters of 350-600 mm in diameter to a full drilling depth of 14 metres. With a typical 450 mm auger, the machine is capable of producing up to 150 linear m/day of pile, making it a highly productive rig for its weight and size.

Based on the four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer chassis of JCB’s most powerful backhoe loader, the Pilingmaster delivers unparalleled manoeuvrability on, and between sites.

A Need for Speed

The weight and accessibility of the machine require far less site preparation than for larger crawler models, with minimal need for an extensive piling mat to be constructed. This reduces cost for the contractor, cutting the preparation time before piling can commence. The standard JCB Powerslide sideshift boom mounting allows the operator to reach up to three piles from a single position, further reducing time-consuming repositioning of the machine and boosting productivity.

JCB is to offer both high travel speed and high traction options for its popular 407 compact wheeled loader. The driveline options further enhance the versatility and performance of this highly productive machine. The high-speed axle option will deliver maximum travel speeds of up to 35 km/ hour and will sit alongside the existing 20 km/hour axle option. The higher speed axles are available in standard open differential

18

DIGGERS & DOZERS

format or with a limited slip differential in the front axle, for improved loader performance. Operation is similar to the larger 409 compact wheeled loader, with the existing twomode rocker switch on the joystick and a second highspeed rocker switch located

on the right hand console. This switch controls the increase in speed from 20-35 km/hour. The higher speed machine features a 150mm longer wheelbase and an additional 100 kg in operating weight. JCB will also offer a locking differential front axle for the

19

407, available with both 20 and 35 km/hour options. To use the front diff-lock, the operator simply holds down a diff-lock activation switch on the loader joystick for the time that they require the axle to be locked. This prevents the axle lock remaining activated when it is not required.

CAN YOU HANDLE IT? C H Middleton Ltd is one of Yorkshire’s leading privately owned waste management companies, working with local authorities plus hundreds of businesses and tradesmen to deliver a prompt and professional Waste Management Service.

Middleton’s - as they are known in and around South Yorkshire - have operated in the UK for over 70 years, becoming C.H. Middleton Ltd. in 1959. The company’s services have evolved over the years to meet economic and customer demands with their most recent change being a focus on recycling of all waste streams and offering customers “Zero Waste to Landfill” solutions. Dealing with virtually all aspects of waste management, disposal and recycling; including difficult, confidential and hazardous wastes

20

the company is capable of delivering individual tailored waste services. “In the 1980’s we expanded our Recycling & Waste Management Services beyond Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham to adapt to the needs of our customers and answer the call for a high class on demand waste service which was flexible and adapted to changes in legislation and waste handling practices,” says director Guy Middleton. “Our aim is to meet all of our customers’ waste needs in a friendly, professional manner and

DIGGERS & DOZERS

deliver a full audit trail. Our Environmental Performance and Safety Record speak for themselves, as do our customer references and reputation.” Operating from a purpose-built, fullylicensed waste transfer station at Doncaster, Middleton’s has drastically reduced the amount of waste it sends to landfill sites, minimising their carbon footprint and that of their customers. To assist with handling the waste on site, Guy Middleton has just purchased a Terex TWH220 waste handler from local dealer Warwick Ward. The decision for a new handler was an important one for Middleton as the JCB handler he was looking to replace did the lion’s share of the work in the yard. When Robert Hughes (Warwick Ward) originally spoke to Guy Middleton he had a list of important requirements of the machine, firstly, strong stability and performance, fuel economy, driver comfort, after sales and finally reliability. Middleton’s demonstrated several different manufactures’ machines including JCB, CAT and Komatsu before deciding that the Terex TWH220 supported by Warwick Ward had the full package. When asked about the factors

that helped him make the important decision to purchase a Terex TWH220, Guy Middleton commented: ‘’One of the main reasons for going ahead with the Terex was the new tier 4 engines that give smooth power accompanied with excellent fuel economy and low emissions, which is in keeping with our profile as being as green as possible.” It wasn’t just the state-of-the-art engine and cooling technology that impressed Guy Middleton. “Due to the hours the machine will be working, our operator’s were involved heavily in the decision making process as they will be sitting in the seat all day every day. They found the Terex the most comfortable, controllable and stable machine by a large margin, meaning that even on a long shift, fatigue would be kept to a minimum’’. This is achieved by the Terex being a purpose built material handler designed from the ground up for the one purpose, making it more stable and reliable. “The other critical factor for our business was reliability and after sales support,” Guy Middleton concludes. “I feel that the Terex material handlers build quality accompanied with Warwick Wards 50 years experience in after sales was a perfect combination.’’

Garriock Bros. Ltd, Atlas Copco has agreed to acquire Erkat Spezialmaschinen und Service GmbH, a manufacturer of drum cutter attachments for excavators.

Erkat is based in Hämbach, Germany, and has sales and service locations worldwide. The company makes drum cutter attachments for excavators used primarily in construction and demolition and for quarries and tunnels. According to Atlas Copco, the Erkat brand name is recognised for premium quality and continuous innovation. The

Beat of a New Drum company employs 38 people. “Drum cutters are an ideal complementary product for Atlas Copco as a solution provider in rock excavation, tunnel and foundation profiling and demolition,” said Vladimir Kozlovskiy, President of Atlas Copco´s Construction Tools Division. In demolition and rock excavation today, a new technology is breaking through, mainly driven by legislation, to reduce sound and vibration, but also due

CELEBRATING OLD & NEW Walsh Plant Services, a southern service dealer of Kubota equipment, has renovated an original KH10 mini-excavator, the first ever model produced by the manufacturer in 1979, to celebrate the significant milestone of Kubota selling its 50,000th excavator in the UK and Ireland this year.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

James Walsh and his team spent three months stripping down the KH10 model, refurbishing each individual component and rebuilding the machine in its entirety. The result is a mini-excavator that has been restored to full working order, utilising the original engine and pump, since it was first introduced more than 37 years ago.

as part of its 50,000th mini-excavator sale celebrations,” explains Walsh Plant Services’ director James Walsh. “To be able to refurbish a machine back to full operation that utilises all the original critical components is a testament to the manufacturing standards set by Kubota.” “Kubota was the first company to introduce and pioneer the concept of mini-excavators into the UK back in 1979, so to see our first machine returned back to full working order by Walsh Plant Services is great to see and give us an opportunity to reflect on how much we have achieved in the construction industry since,” says Kubota UK managing director Dave Roberts. “In 1979, Kubota sold only 41 machines and to be able to now celebrate our 50,000th excavator sale in UK and Ireland less than forty years later is a fantastic achievement by all at Kubota.”

In addition to the restoration of the KH10 mini-excavator, Kubota UK also produced a ‘special edition’ gold painted KX-71 machine, considered to be a modern day equivalent to the KH10. This machine was donated to construction industry charity The Lighthouse Club who auctioned the machine at its prestigious 60th anniversary Summer Ball, raising £26,000. “We were very flattered to be asked by Kubota to renovate its original mini-excavator

“We bought our first Hyundai in 2013 from Andrew Shaw at HES, who I have known for many years, I bought machinery from his father when we were a muck shifting and demolition company more than 20-years ago,” explains Terry Murtagh. “HES supplied us with the 16-tonne R160 and fitted it with a static cab extension which is 1.5 metres high. We really liked the machine and it was excellent value for money. It did exactly what it says on the tin – I was made up with it. We went on to buy a loading shovel the following year and then the R220 and most recently the R80. They all perform very well and can handle the 8.5hour shift with ease! I recommended Hyundai to another contractor and they purchased two minis’ - they are equally pleased with their performance.” Robert ‘Wolfie’ Murtagh is one of the company’s machine operators whose wolf logo forms part of the fleets livery. Wolfie operates all of the Hyundai machines but his main mount is the R220LC-9A he said, “All the Hyundai’s are good machines – I can’t fault them. They are also operator friendly and a comfortable machine to drive, which is important when working long shifts. The rear-view camera is also good from a safety point of view and the power and fuel economy are excellent. The loading shovel is really powerful too.” “We are delighted with the service we get from HES,” Murtagh concludes. “If we have an issue we call Andrew and he gets it sorted straight away. FIVE DECADES OF LOYALTY One of the world’s longeststanding JCB customers has invested in a brand new fuelsaving machine - nearly half a century after founding his family firm with a second-hand JCB backhoe.

Peter Andrews cut his teeth as a machine driver in the 1960s and was the first person to operate a JCB 6C tracked excavator when it was launched in 1968. It was delivered personally to his then employers, Brooks Diggers in Poole, Dorset, by JCB Founder Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE. A year later in 1969 Andrews struck out on his own and founded Dorset-based firm Andrews Plant Hire with a second hand JCB backhoe – a purchase that set his family company firmly on the road to success. Today Andrew’s company runs a fleet of 38 JCB machines including the latest purchase, a brand new 457 wheeled loader. His son Chris Andrews is now also a Director of the company. Peter Andrews, who is still at the helm of the firm, said: “We’ve operated JCB products since the very beginning and the recent wheeled loading shovels have been outstanding performers in tough applications. ON A ROLL Caterpillar has announced the addition of oscillatory vibration to its expanding line-up of asphalt compactors. The new CB10 is a 10 metric ton asphalt compactor that can be equipped with a combination of oscillatory and vibratory drums. The CB10 with oscillation technology builds upon the proven durability and performance offered by existing Cat Asphalt Compactors and delivers the solutions that helps contractors become more versatile, productive, and profitable.

Versatility is essential for contractors to make the most of their equipment. The Cat CB10 with vibration and oscillation offers a wide range of applications from large expressway projects to smaller, yet critical, urban-type work. The front drum utilizes vertical vibration that delivers the amplitudes and frequency options for thicker lifts and tough mix designs, while the oscillation system on the rear drum performs effectively on thin lifts and near sensitive structures such as buildings, bridge decks, and over underground utilities like fibre-optics, electric, water, and gas lines.

The design combines Caterpillar’s highperformance vertical vibration on the front drum with new oscillation technology on the rear drum. The front drum with vertical vibration is available in two amplitude, five amplitude, or Versa-Vibe™ systems that provides initial compaction, while the rear drum with oscillation continues the excellent performance for optimal smoothness and density.

The CB10 continues to build upon the many great features offered by its CB54B predecessor. Exceptional visibility and control, as well as the smooth operating powertrain continue to perform as expected, while refinements to the water spray system, service access, and lighting package provide a boost to operators and service personnel. Furthermore, the infra-red mat temperature sensors have been integrated into the front and rear bumpers for greater protection and performance.

The oscillatory system utilizes the proven pod-style eccentric weight technology developed by Caterpillar and has a 2 year/2,000 hour service interval that helps contractors maximize uptime and limit routine maintenance costs. A durable powertransmission employs a unique belt-drive system that delivers two times the load capacity of timing belt systems for more reliable operation. In addition, the hardened drum shell offers exceptional long-term strength on a variety of mix designs and delivers outstanding mat texture, density, and smoothness.

Strictly Strickland Strickland MFG is a well-known name in the construction plant and earthmoving industries - the company’s head office operates from a purpose built, 2.4 hectare facility in Evesham Worcestershire. Producing couplers and attachments for earthmoving machinery since 1945, Strickland MFG has become a trusted supplier to many OEM, OED and national plant hirers. The company started out as N Strickland Ltd, a privatelyowned business that has been operating from the same site in central England since 1945. In 2002 the company re-invented itself with the sale of its well-known Berco undercarriage distributorship. Two new companies then emerged and became Strickland Direct Ltd and Strickland Tracks Ltd.

With Strickland Direct Ltd concentrating on buckets and attachments for the earthmoving sector, its sister company developed a new market place manufacturing track systems for mobile crushers and screeners. After four steady years of growth for both companies, in August 2006 there was a change of leadership. The new leadership came in the guise of the O’Neill Manufacturing group. The O’Neill family were well versed in the excavator attachments and the crushing and screening industries. Pat O’Neill was the founder of Powerscreen. In 2015 Strickland Direct moved to its

New offerings have been added to the product portfolio including the S-Lock quick couplers and hydraulic thumbs. The company can also react quickly when a customer needs a particular specification build.

Another of Strickland’s key customers is excavator manufacturer Kubota – who has a “blue chip” customer base including GAP Plant and Tool Hire, Charles Wilson, Ardent and Morris Leslie, to name a few.

Included in the Strickland MFG product portfolio are telehandler buckets that are tapered at the rear to enable the buckets to be stacked neatly and in a more compact fashion during transport and storage. The company is one of the largest stockists of buckets and attachments in the UK, with huge stocks of finished product available for immediate shipment at any time. The company offer buckets on a next day delivery style basis, minimising downtime on site and allowing customers to reduce their own stock inventory.

“We consider our dealers and suppliers as partners in a combined undertaking. We aim to grow customer satisfaction and confidence by working to provide quality products, advanced technologies and services that are safe, cost effective and appealing. Strickland MFG have met our needs and more- they’re strong on delivery and service but it’s the added extras that make our relationship so beneficial,” says Kubota UK managing director Dave Roberts. “We can offer, through Strickland, bespoke services like company logos and colours, quick delivery and multiple drop offs. And the personal attention we get from Nicola Troy is responsive and reassuring.”

The Strickland range is designed using the latest 3D CAD technology, to produce bucket and attachments that will last in even the most arduous applications. The company’s own trained engineers work hand in hand with the very experienced sales team, who take note of customer feedback to constantly increase the range of products available.

Strickland MFG will be exhibiting at PLANTWORX 2017 (6 – 8 June 2017, Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Leicestershire) demonstrating many of the latest attachments within its portfolio.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The DX340LC-5 is powered by the Scania DC9 5-cylinder diesel engine, with an output of 237 kW of power at 1800 rpm, providing a 13 percent increase in engine power and a four percent boost in torque over the LC-3 model. The engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies. As well as the Scania engine, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced that lead to significant reductions in fuel consumption amounting to an average of six percent compared to the Stage IIIB machine. With its super long reach capability, the DX225SLR-3 is an all-round machine, ideally suited for jobs such as excavating lakes, cleaning of settling banks, drainage work, digging in sand and gravel pits, slope forming or other long reach work. With an operating weight of 23.9 tonne, the DX225SLR-3 is powered by the Doosan DL06K diesel engine providing 124 kW of power at 1,800 RPM. The DX225SLR-3 has a bucket digging force of 149.0 kN and an arm digging force of 58.8 kN. The maximum digging reach (Std Front) is 15.38 m, maximum digging depth (Std Front) is 11.65 metres and the maximum digging height (Std Front) is 13.08 metres. plant and loading road transport. Due to these specific applications there were a number of particular attributes we were looking for, which led us to draw up our own specifications before investigating the market,” explains Kevin Foley, general manager of Goonvean Aggregates. “Good visuals, a large carrying capacity, the reach of the loader and fuel consumption were key considerations.” Working closely with its drivers, Goonvean conducted numerous trials with different manufacturers before choosing the Bell L2606E wheeled loader. “We have never chosen a vehicle based purely on its brand. We need to know that

Goonvean’s original three Bell L2606E wheeled loaders were purchased in 2014 following a review of the company’s plant equipment. “We required a number of robust, reliable wheeled loaders to perform loading and carrying operations, such as destocking from the processing

any machine we buy is capable of doing the job we need it to do – and that is more important than its name. Back in 2014 many people thought we were taking a gamble by buying Bell Equipment, as its wheel loaders were relatively unknown. However, the machine specs met our own and all three original loaders, which have since been consistently working fiveand-a-half day weeks under tough conditions, instantly proved their credentials,” Foley concludes. “We now have four operating quarries and as such, earlier this year we required an additional wheeled loader to boost our fleet and increase our capacity. It was a clear and easy decision to return to Bell Equipment and its L2606E.”

Feasting on a Diet of Wood Chips Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd is one of the leading waste management companies in Edinburgh & The Lothians. When it needed large capacity, high productivity, reliable and safe Loadalls for its busy wood recycling operation, it chose the JCB 560-80 WASTEMASTER supplied by Scott JCB. David Hamilton, Director of Hamilton Waste says: “One of the reasons we picked JCB is that we needed a large Loadall – we chose two 560-80 Loadalls for their 6-Tonne capacity.” The Loadall’s productivity supports Hamilton Waste in processing and recycling approximately 500 tonnes of wood per week. As an example of vehicle’s capability, David Hamilton says: “They can load a 140-150 cubic metre walking floor trailer in 10-15 minutes – depending upon the operator.”

The 560-80 is the highest capacity machine in JCB’s Load all range. Its impressive 6,000 kg of lifting capacity combines with an 8-metre reach and a powerful Acoma engine to give an exceptionally high operational output. The manoeuvrable vehicle’s compact wheelbase and large steering lock angles helps improve cycle times – especially where space is limited. This all makes the vehicle fit for purpose for waste and recycling customers like Hamilton Waste & Recycling.

The company operates three transfer and recycling stations, which make an important contribution to the Zero Waste Scotland plan, which targets recycling 70% of all waste in Scotland by 2025. With the help of technology, the wood recycling process is becoming more efficient and is producing recycled wood of greater quality and in increasing volume. The wood recycling industry is set for continued growth as it meets continuing demands for greater sustainability. Hamilton Waste has invested heavily in a wood processing operation, which shreds wood waste down into various sizes to produce a final product to the specification of an expanding range of end users. These include wood board manufacturers, biomass, arena surfacing and animal bedding companies.

The versatility of their new Loadalls in this operation has impressed Ken Chrystal, Site Manager at Hamilton Waste. “Not just for bucket work but also for pallet fork work and using a yard brush. The 560-80 is manoeuvrable round the yard and into the bays with its four wheel steering and narrow tyres, which allows it to access places that bigger machines can’t reach as easily.” The vehicle also contributes to a safe environment on site thanks to key features such as automotive-inspired braking, adaptive load control and hose burst check valves (HBCVs). Operators have easy access and the low boom profile and pivot means they get excellent rear visibility; there’s also a full set of side and rear-view mirrors to enhance all-round visibility and safety compliance. An operator presence switch prevents movement whenever drivers leave their seats. Bystanders are safeguarded by a reversing alarm. “Our operators love this machine,” says

Chrystal. “It’s a very strong, versatile, all-round machine. It allows quick coupling and quick changing of the bucket without a problem – very easy, very safe and very reliable.” Like any site, the last thing Hamilton Waste wants is machine downtime holding up operations. This is where support provided by JCB to deliver high overall service levels counts. “The service we get from Scott JCB is second to none – even if it’s just a phone call,” says David Hamilton. “If it requires more than a call, they are out on site right away and quite often within an hour, which we’re delighted with.” The high operational output of the 560-80 WASTEMASTER Loadalls and the support provided by JCB play a crucial role in helping Hamilton Waste maintain a highly productive wood recycling operation. As David Hamilton concludes: “We have a very good relationship with JCB – they are reliable, trustworthy and the product is great.”

Swing Time General groundworks and surfacing contractors JM Phillips & Sons of Stourport on Severn has given its business a significant boost with the addition of a new Volvo ECR145E reduced swing 16 tonne excavator complete with a Steelwrist tiltrotator.

JM Phillips undertakes general contracting, building and surfacing contracts in the Worcestershire area and has developed a reputation for specialising in projects where space is at a premium. “A good deal of the work we also undertake on site involves dealing with drainage, shoring excavations and handling drag box trench supports and our previous machine was continually on its limits,” explains Managing Director Dean Phillips. And seeing the need to move up in machine size he set about evaluating the market. “I looked at several manufacturers but was particularly drawn to the Volvo reduced swing machine along with the added versatility of the equipment, dozer blade and Steelwrist tiltrotator. Having the chance to appraise a similarly specified ECR145, listening to third party recommendations and considering the quality of build and

general appearance of the machine, my mind was made up and I’m really pleased with my decision,” he continues. Equipped with a two piece boom the ECR145E supplied to JM Phillips and Sons includes the optional heavy duty dozer blade and a factory fitted Steelwrist X18 tiltrotator. Dean Phillips has further enhanced his new machine by adding street pads bolted to the steel track plates to eliminate damage to new road and access surfaces. “The whole combination gives us a huge amount of flexibility allowing us to carry out virtually all the requirements on very tight and confined sites with the minimum amount of manoeuvring and travel,” says Dean. “Overall, it’s given us a new dimension to our operations and is completely on top of the job.” Powered by a four cylinder Volvo engine developing 121 nett hp the ECR145E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication.

For example pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Two variable displacement load sensing pumps each deliver a generous 124 l/min providing plenty of hydraulic power to the end equipment and travel motors.

Opting for the two piece boom arrangement and intermediate 2.5 metre dipper arm, gives a generous digging envelope with a forward reach of 8.6 metres, a dig depth of 5.6 metres and a maximum dump height of 7.1 metres. Equally thus configured, the machine has a very short front swing radius of just 2.59 metre which is again essential for working in confined spaces. The machine also offers excellent stability across carriage having a lift capacity of 1.86 tonnes at full reach and 1.5 metre above ground level.

The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera.

Based at Chadwick near Stourport on Severn JM Phillips & Sons established back in 1960 by Dean’s father, are a groundworks and surfacing contractor specialising in infrastructure works and construction up to dpc level, finishing and landscaping projects for private clients as well as local authorities in the Worcestershire area.

Turquoise Turns Green Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) has announced the arrival of its latest version of the 50-tonne conventional earthmoving and construction excavator SK500LC-10. of torque and, in turn, 271 kW of power. In working terms, the SK500LC-10 provides a digging force of 267kN as standard and 292kN with Power Boost engaged, as well as an increased digging volume of 13 percent (in H mode).

This latest Generation 10 machine incorporates many new detail changes but is particularly marked for being designed to provide exceptionally low emissions and increased working performance to maintain unparalleled working efficiency. The SK500LC-10 is also the latest Kobelco excavator to comply with the Stage 4 (Tier IV)

Fuel efficiency through refinement is an important factor with customers and Kobelco, with more than 80 years of exhaust emissions regulations. manufacturing and design Superior strength and power are experience, is the key to high performance and the new SK500LC-10 provides this via the a leading force in reduction driving force of a Hino intercooled of customer turbo-charged, six-cylinder diesel operating engine. This provides an uprated performance specification of 1.470Nm costs. The

58

DIGGERS & DOZERS

fuel consumption of the SK500LC-10 has improved by approximately six percent in Eco-mode/S-mode compared to the former (dash-9) model, while maximising fuel efficiency in H-mode. Kobelco design quality is also highlighted with the SK500LC-10’s latest cooling system. An all new hydraulically-driven twin fan engine cooling system replaces the traditional fan belt design to reduce engine workload – in certain applications a traditional cooling fan can take nearly five percent of available engine performance. The hydraulic version also prevents overcooling by use of integrated sensors to reduce the speed of the twin-fan unit. As a result, the new system, along with the arm interflow, promotes increase in fuel efficiency and reliability. Enhancing reliability are new filter components regarding fuel (new prefilter and water trap design) and hydraulics. The SK500LC-10 is designed to ensure a minimal future carbon-footprint. Technically advanced systems featured in the engine’s dynamics have been designed especially for this reason: DOC (Diesel Oxidisation Catalyst), and the combination of SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) act to reduce the amount of DEF/AdBlue fluid consumption and, of course, meet stringent Stage 4 (Tier IV) emissions regulations. Different model configurations of the SK500LC-10 are available for different working applications and also to assist in transportation to working sites. The LC (Long Crawler) is the standard SK500LC-10 version. The VLC (Variable Long Crawler) variant of the SK500LC-10 features a mechanically-adjustable undercarriage to change the machine’s gauge. On

its wide setting, stability is ensured. Retracted (narrow) is beneficial to transportation logistics in countries with transportation limitations. The ME (Mass Excavation) version features shorter boom and arm configuration to promote the use of a larger bucket e.g. to use in certain quarry/mine applications. This configuration is only available with the SK500VLC-10. An option to add 600 mm double-grouser shoes to the standard triple-grousers are also available. Serviceability and operator refinement on the SK500LC-10 is greatly enhanced. The upper deck/cabin layout enables easy access to the engine compartment for daily operator checks and scheduled servicing needs. The spacious cabin has also been updated in-line with the other Generation 10 machines and features the latest media unit and air-con delivery vents for maximum effect. Operator control levers have a lighter-feel, and a new ‘lock’ lever and control lever box are also featured. High durability working performance of Kobelco construction machinery in all areas of work is amplified by Generation 10 machines; the very latest in hydraulic design and manufacturing features throughout SK500LC-10. One such area is the hydraulic oil return system, which now utilises two oil filters to dramatically reduce the risk of contamination and harmful clogging. The new filters also promote long-term durability of all components in the hydraulic circuitry due to 1.8 times greater filtration capacity compared to Dash 9 models. A new pump drain filter is also in place.

KKB Group Opts for Volvo

The Rochesterbased KKB Group has chosen to expand its growing mobile plant fleet with the addition of 22 machines supplied by Volvo Construction Equipment. The mix of excavators, wheel loaders and articulated haulers will be deployed across the company’s five main business areas and will operate nationwide.

The package of machines includes six A30G articulated haulers, four L150H wheeled loaders and twelve crawler excavators ranging from the 22 tonne EC220E up to the 50 tonne EC480E. They were selected following a competitive tender process but specifically as a direct result of the reliability and performance of the existing Volvo machines in the KKB fleet. “Basically we have trust in the Volvo brand in terms of performance and reliability,” comments KKB’s Plant Manager, Craig Hore. “The machines are well built in our opinion, and offer a superb return on operating costs and,

60

not least, high residual values when it’s time to replace them which for us is usually every three years. As we operate across the whole of Great Britain, another deciding factor for choosing Volvo once again, is their support network with centres strategically placed around the country.” There are five operating divisions within the KKB Group. The company’s traditional areas of expertise are recycling with long-standing contracts in place with major aggregate and asphalt producers, land remediation and plant hire. “We have continued to evolve the business

DIGGERS & DOZERS

and over the last few years have added the demolition and civil engineering sectors to our portfolio,” explains Director of Business Development, Sally Pearson. “These new additions will therefore be deployed across the whole spectrum of our business and will give us the scope to handle large bulk muck-shifting projects, remediation projects, demolition contracts and, of course, recycling.”

to operate grapples. Other safety features include boxing ring-style guarding to the top of the superstructures and all-round visibility aids. Similarly, the L150H wheeled loaders have been equipped with heavy duty L5 tyres, weigh loaders and sensor-vision reversing aids. This means that any machine can be deployed into an operating requirement within the Group at a moment’s notice, giving the highest degree of flexibility.

The latest machines from Volvo have been highly specified in order for them to meet any project requirement being undertaken by the Group. For example, all the excavators from the EC220E to the EC480E have been supplied with heavy-duty belly plates under the superstructure; additional X3 grabrotation circuits for handling hydraulic implements such as selector grabs, pulverisers and munchers, and plates welded to the underside of the dipper-arms

All 22 machines are covered by Volvo’s Blue service agreement which ensures they will be regularly maintained by Volvo trained engineers, irrespective of where the machines may be working in the country, using Volvo genuine parts. “This is a significant benefit to us as we can rely on Volvo to take care of servicing and support issues nationwide giving us that extra peace of mind,” Craig Hore concludes.

Security and safety will form part of The Hub which will include exhibits and

A Tale of No Tail Unlike industry standards for this category of machines, Yanmar is using variable axial piston pumps which adapt the flow and the pressure to the load, allowing smoother operation and improving the comfort of the operator. The pump flow and its high working pressure, also enable an improvement in working speeds and in turn overall productivity. This excavator differs from the SV08 not only in weight and tail-swing but also the operating controls. The use of joysticks on both sides of the seat enables to improve the position of the operator, therefore enhancing their comfort while working. With the joysticks, the operator also has a better control over the machine movements. Manoeuvrability, productivity and precision are increased. Yanmar decided to use the same tried and tested joysticks as for its heavier mini-excavators. The use of this well-developed system reduces the risk of damages and downtime, whilst increasing the service life. Further features present on the ViO12 that will make it a popular choice, include; reliable Yanmar 3TNV engine, large opening maintenance hood, separate pedals for the 3rd circuit (PTO) and boom swing enabling the combination of movements and Dual or single action auxiliary circuit. All of this with Yanmar’s standard three-year warranty.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

KELSEY PLANT HIRE Kelsey Plant Hire came to life in 1994. A well known local building company, James Longley & Co was struggling through the 1990’s recession and sold off it’s in-house plant arm to Nigel Kelsey and Nadine Clark (nee Kelsey). They established their small independent company in Crawley with just three other staff members, one digger and a whole selection of other equipment. For the first few years Nigel ran the workshop and Nadine, with no previous plant experience, took the reins on the hire desk and with the finances.

to emigrate, leaving it in the capable hands of Managing Director, Nadine to lead the entire operation of eleven staff including two dedicated hire desk staff. The hire fleet has also changed over the years and now includes, not only a whole range of diggers from micro to 9 tonne, but also telehandlers, rollers, dumpers, compressors and Avant handlers.

After relocating to Horsham in 1997 the company continued to grow slowly but surely so that, when the last recession hit, Kelsey Plant Hire was sufficiently established to weather it out. During that time, husband and wife, Nigel and Nadine separated and had very different ideas about the future ahead however, they continued to work alongside each other for a further 10 years.

Most significantly, Kelsey Plant Hire has just purchased 19 brand new superior quality Takeuchi diggers from CBL, being one of the largest Takeuchi investments in the South East in the last 12 months.

In recent years the company set-up has moved on dramatically. A large modern office has replaced the two small cabins used before. Nigel left the company with plans

This will enable the company to provide an even higher standard of plant for hire in 2017 and beyond.

UKD Expands with Bobcat UKD Diggers Limited, the plant hire business based at Hilton in Derbyshire, has expanded its operations with the purchase of 18 new Bobcat compact excavators from Butler Reynolds, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer based at Costock near Loughborough.

The new additions to the UKD Diggers fleet comprise models with operating weights from 1.0 to 4.5 tonne and include new Bobcat E10, E17, E25 and E45 mini-excavators. Small Beginnings Dave Bennett, a Director at UKD Diggers, said: “Since we were founded in 2008 in the throes of the recession, we have built steadily from small beginnings around a fleet that included several new Bobcat 321 1.5 tonne excavators we purchased at the time from Butler Reynolds. As demand picked up, we added E62 6 tonne and E85 8 tonne excavators two years ago from Butler Reynolds, shortly after they were launched by Bobcat. “We have continued to see growth in every sector from local builders and landscapers using our micros to groundworks contractors

and housebuilders renting our bigger machines. The new Bobcat excavators will allow us to better meet the increased demand and to extend our current customer base by going after new business as we are much better equipped to support new customers now.” Before any machinery purchases, UKD Diggers undertakes extensive research into the manufacturers and the products they offer, to assess the best machinery for specific tasks within each market sector. Nigel Long, a Director at Butler Reynolds, said: “The new Bobcat excavators underwent the same exhaustive competitive examination for performance and cost-effectiveness which characterises all the equipment in the UKD Diggers fleet and passed with flying colours. It is not surprising that Bobcat continues to take a significant

that only an independent plant hirer can offer, with market-leading machines that arrive in tip-top condition, fully fuelled and ready for work. We have an expanding customer base in which every client is as important as one another from some of the UK’s top names in civil engineering to our local businesses throughout the Midlands and South Yorkshire,” said Dave Bennett.

share of this market with a range of miniexcavators covering operating weights from 0.8 to 8.5 tonne.” Stiff Competition Butler Reynolds is the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Rutland, Birmingham and the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire. As well as the Bobcat range of compact excavators, Butler Reynolds is responsible for sales and service of Bobcat compact loaders and telehandlers in the same areas. The company also offers for sale over 70 different types of Bobcat attachments that help to deliver versatility and time-saving efficiency across a huge range of applications.

On Your Bike One of UKD Diggers’ customers is Clixbys Forest & Environment Contractors (www. clixbys.co.uk), based in Oakamoor in Staffordshire. Clixbys offers more than 30 years of experience and an unrivalled record in planning and executing rural and environmental improvements that balance the access needs of people and those of the countryside itself. Clixbys generally works within a 150 mile radius of Oakamoor, predominately in North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire dales, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire, but the company is increasingly working further afield with

“In the face of stiff competition, we chose Butler Reynolds and Bobcat because of the attractive deal they offered, backed by the excellent service and support we know Butler Reynolds have provided us for years. In a similar fashion, we always aim to go the extra mile for our customers providing a service

well with the quick hitches on the Bobcat excavators.”

Managing Director, Hugh Clixby, said: “We have been a long-standing customer of UKD Diggers since the company started. When we require additional equipment to supplement our own fleet of excavators, tracked dumpers and self-propelled rollers we generally use UKD Diggers. We like the dedicated service offered by UKD Diggers as an independent concern and work closely with them. Dave and Matt will always go the extra mile to help and because their drivers know our business and projects so well, it is an easy task for them to move the equipment we hire directly from one of our sites to another. We have many attachments to fit their machines and over the last two years, UKD Diggers has also given us some storage space for our tilt buckets and tilt rotators. We find these work really

Mountain biking is the fastest-growing sport in Britain today, and building mountain biking trails has now become Clixbys’ core activity, specialising in the design and construction of purpose-built mountain biking trails to entice and thrill riders of all abilities. The company will take on the construction of a mountain bike trail from the macro or micro setting-out stage of the project, through to completion and opening. Clixbys has built cross country, downhill and 4x courses, with every project completed on time and within budget. The trails are predominantly machine built using excavators, including the Bobcat zero tail swing machines from UKD Diggers, for maximum power to footprint ratio, fitted with tilt/rotator units for digging, shaping and

crush rock on site, if local planning allows, and build gabion baskets. Hugh Clixby added: “We have purpose-built rake and thumb attachments for mounting on 360° excavators, as well as heavy-duty flails and stumping equipment. Our zero tail swing excavators and flail attachments are ideal for removing understory in mature woodland and re-spacing natural regeneration to produce a commercial crop. We work closely with the engineers, recreation departments and any local rider groups that may be involved. High-profile projects to date include the 38 km Dalby red route, the new Kitchener trail in Sherwood Pines and the high-level, high-exposure and high-fun Altura trail at Whinlatter complete with the Rough Riderz descent.

Hugh Clixby added: “We are often called in to repair and maintain existing trails. Recently, we used a Bobcat E10 micro-excavator from UKD Diggers to recondition a trail in the Whinlatter Forest in the Lake District. We first built this trail in 2008, using a 5 tonne zero tail swing machine – the trail is on a very exposed mountain top, with a steep side slope. Eight years later, the trail had become very narrow (600 mm in places) and completely natural in look and feel. We hired a Bobcat E10 from UKD Diggers and put our own Power Tilt pick up on it, and due to its narrow footprint and zero tail swing, negotiated the trail and all its features (which included slab rock, rock steps, stone pitched drops and tree roots) brilliantly. You honestly couldn’t tell we had taken a machine along the trail. After the E10 had finished, the trail was as good as new.”

“We have completed many projects in the Peak District National Park and surrounding area, working with the PDNPA, the National Trust, Severn Trent Water, Forest Enterprise and Sheffield City Council. The projects have included all-ability trails, easy access paths, woodland walks and bridleway construction and improvements. We always use local aggregates, and thousands of people have walked, run, ridden and cycled over our work which we fit perfectly into the local environment.”

Clixbys is currently employing a Bobcat E85 excavator hired from UKD Diggers with a tilting bucket for mid-harvest repairs on Category A forest roads in Laughton Wood near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. The E85 is being used to remove harvesting debris from the road surface, restoring the camber on the roads and resurfacing parts of the roads where necessary. The next job for the E85 is on a golf course project in Berkshire.

The easy-to-transport Bobcat E10 one tonne micro-excavator is a zero tail swing (ZTS) machine with a maximum digging depth of 1.82 metres and a machine weight of 1,077 kg. The E10 is powered by the Kubota D722 diesel engine providing maximum net power (ISO 9249) of 7.4 kW.

Rake & Thumb Clixbys’ customers include the Forest Enterprise and many other management companies on a range of contracts, using Bobcat excavators rented from UKD Diggers for applications such as mounding on restock sites, de-stumping and site clearance work for major civil engineering projects. Clixbys also undertakes a wide variety of low-cost civil engineering projects using Bobcat excavators from UKD Diggers, including temporary extraction routes, turning heads, bridges, culverts and car parks. The company can also

The reduced tail swing E85 model is powered by the Yanmar 4TNV98C-VDB8 Stage IIIB compliant diesel engine providing 44.3 kW of power at 2100 RPM. The E85 has a maximum digging depth of 4.63 metres and a machine weight of 8,600 kg.
